The photograph is so fresh, taken so timely that even the sawdust and drill bits, still warm, are still lying on the shelves. In this section we will talk about the Joker chrome pipe system.
Everyone has probably noticed that beautiful metal structures are often used in furniture production. One of the options for elegant metal structures is the “Joker” system, be it sliding wardrobes, tables, glass counters in showrooms and shops. I also decided to use shiny chrome pipes for my cabinet. I bought a 3-meter piece for about 160 rubles and several chrome-plated flanges. Now I will write about what I did with them.
I don’t remember where I saw such an example, maybe in some magazine.. I decided to use such pipes as supports for small shelves with rounded corners. The joker pipe can be cut with a hacksaw. But I saw that in the store they were cutting it with a pipe cutter. Some friends lent me approximately the same pipe cutter. I think that this expensive tool is not worth buying specifically for this purpose.
But it’s very good at cutting chrome pipes, no metal shavings or noise. The cut is very neat and even. The flange is placed on the pipe and attached to the surface of the chipboard with three self-tapping screws. In addition to the flange there is also a screw that secures the pipe. In general, everything I did can be seen in the photographs. It was around then that I had the idea of creating a blog. So I started taking pictures of my closet =).
A little late, but better late than never.
As you can see in my photo, the shelves of the cabinet with and using “Joker” pipes are made in two places: at the top and at the bottom. A mirror is glued between them with double-sided tape. In my opinion it turned out quite well, didn’t it?
As you can see, everything is simple. We cut off the pipe, screwed the flanges to the shelves (with three screws each), inserted the pipes, secured the shelves, tightened the clamps on the flanges, swept up the sawdust .. and everything was ready =)
Now a little about another type of chrome pipes. Chrome-plated oval-section pipes can be used for hangers in wardrobes and wardrobes. I also purchased a piece of chrome oval pipe and two brackets for attaching it to the wall. Each bracket has 3! holes for fastening with self-tapping screws. It takes a lot of effort to tear it off.
A hanger on two such brackets should be able to withstand a decent load of clothes.
You could use a standard closet hanger that fits into the closet as a spacer, but this turned out to be about twice the price and had limitations for installation. In general, it simply wouldn’t fit into the place where I wanted to insert it. This is exactly the compartment where the crossbar on which the hangers hang is inserted.
In my closet it is quite narrow, but the clothes are arranged in 2 rows. Short jackets and shirts on top, long coats and raincoats below. And they decided to hang clothes up that would rarely be taken out. In fact, stores sell a special bracket that has a handle by which you can pull and lower the crossbar with hangers.
In our country, in order to remove the outer jacket, you need to use a stool (if your height is below 175 =)). The price of such a bracket is over a thousand rubles, I felt sorry for this money.
JOKER wardrobe system
Advantages:
- Optimal use of interior space.
- Mobility and versatility: there is no clearly defined step between nodes.
- Simplicity and convenience.
- Great strength and durability.
- The correct room geometry is not required.
- The ability to create your own design using ready-made developments or your own inventions.
- Relatively low cost.
- Just like in the UNO system, it is easy to make changes to an already assembled structure, for example, in the process of redecorating a room.
Required sizes:
- Over a meter horizontal span, the pipe can withstand a distributed load of up to 60 kg.
- The maximum length of the pipe without support is up to 1200 mm.
- Pipes are supplied in three-meter lengths. For structures higher than three meters, connectors must be used.

DIY children's chair made from plastic pipes

Building a chair:
- First of all, you need to cut the pipe into pieces: 7 pieces. 33 cm each (A), 4 pcs. 20 cm each (B), 4 pcs. 13 cm each (C) and 2 pcs. 18 cm each (D);
- Take two parts A and secure them at each end with an angle fitting;
- Insert all elements B into each of the fittings;
- Place T-shaped connectors on each element B, turning their perpendicular part perpendicular to element A;
- Connect the T-fittings in pairs with elements A.
The result should be parallel chair legs;
- Insert all elements C into the free ends of the fittings;
- Next, you need to place the structure so that the ends of the legs “look” at you;
- Take the two corner fittings and slide them onto the C parts closest to you;
- Slide the two T-pieces onto the C pieces further away from you, rotating them so that the center joints are facing you;
- Next, you need to connect the inserted fittings with parts A parallel to the chair legs;
- We insert parts D into the free ends of the T-shaped fittings and put corner fittings on them, turning them “facing” each other;
- We connect them with element A, ending with the back of the chair;
- Make a seat out of fabric by stretching it between parallel bars;
- Glue all connections, then let the chair dry.

To create large holiday decorations consisting of balloons, textiles (fabrics), flowers, designers use large frames. These frames are often prefabricated/dismountable (reusable) and are made from steel pipe and metal connectors. To do this, it is convenient to use a pipe and pipe connectors, which are now called the JOKER system.
Let's try to understand what it is and how it is used.
What are JOKER and UNO systems
In the early 90s, there was a great demand in the country for inexpensive and mobile (collapsible) commercial equipment. Retail outlets were opening in a mass country and they had to be equipped somehow. One of the niches in the commercial equipment market is occupied by the products of the Italian company Arthema Group.
Among other things, the Arthema company supplied to Russia a construction set for building commercial equipment from metal pipes and connectors, the so-called “UNO, JOKER trading systems.” Now they are trying to call them “jokers”, “joker systems”.
Considering that the word JOKER was originally a proper name (a trademark of Arthema Group), it turns out a little awkward.
The basis of these systems was a steel pipe with a diameter of 25 mm and metal (silumin) connectors for pipes and other elements: brackets, panel holders, hangers, etc. The pipe, connectors and other elements of retail systems had a shiny, mirror coating that imitated chrome plating. They were called “chrome plated”, and they still are, although this is not true.

The popularity of the UNO and JOKER systems was very great, they are still used to create trade and exhibition equipment (this is more than 25 years later - a quarter of a century!). In every city in our country there will definitely be one or more suppliers of UNO and JOKER pipes and connectors. Running connectors are sold in stores that supply furniture components and home improvement products for do-it-yourselfers.
Nowadays it is no longer possible to find original products from the Italian company Arthema Group; this is all in the past. For the last many years, on the domestic market you can only find products from Russian and Chinese manufacturers who produce copies of UNO and JOKER of varying quality, but cheaply or very cheaply.
For the needs of aerodesign, for creating frames for columns, frames and arches, the cheapest option UNO and JOKER is suitable. To hold the balls, this is not commercial equipment - these are completely different requirements. Therefore, the cheaper the connectors, the better. It will be lucky if you manage to buy used UNO and JOKER connectors, after dismantling the commercial equipment, such connectors are sold almost for nothing.
Metal pipes for UNO and JOKER
A steel pipe with an outer diameter of 25 mm is used. The pipe is supplied in “sticks” of 3 m each. 10 sticks are packed in a pack. As a rule, the pipe is sold individually, in sticks.
The original pipes from the Italians (Arthema Group) were seamless and had a wall thickness of 1.1-1.2 mm, and they were truly chrome plated. These were heavy, expensive, strong and durable pipes. Modern analogues that are currently sold on the market have thin walls (0.9–0.8 mm); they often sell seam pipes, pipe coating: chemical nickel, i.e. the metal rusts right under the shiny paint, not quickly, but still.
If we talk about aerodesign frames, then seam and the thinnest-walled pipes are suitable for us, but without the defects of the “chrome” coating.
Sections of metal pipe with a diameter of 25 mm
You can use various methods to cut pipes:
- many suppliers provide a pipe cutting service: you buy the required number of three-meter “sticks” and tell the seller the length of the sections you need, and the pipe is cut right in your presence;
- you can cut the pipe yourself using various tools: a grinder with a cutting disc, a pendulum saw, and even a hand hacksaw;
- cut the pipe manually using a roller pipe cutter.
The last method is different in that the pipe is cut completely quietly, there is no sawdust and you don’t need to ask anyone.
Roller pipe cutter
The method of cutting pipes using a roller pipe cutter is very simple and not at all labor-intensive (if you have dexterity or skill):
- a mark is made on the pipe at the place of the cut (with a marker);
- The pipe cutter is screwed to the pipe with the handle so that the roller is pressed against the mark;
- the pipe cutter rotates around the pipe, cutting the metal of the pipe;
- the handle of the pipe cutter is twisted a little, plunging the cutting roller deeper into the metal and the pipe cutter is again rotated around the pipe;
- further, the last point will be repeated several times, gradually deepening the roller into the metal.
The cut piece of pipe breaks off on its own at the cut site.

Features of using frames based on the UNO and JOKER systems
If the frame has supports in the form of horizontal pipe sections, then usually JOKER-40 shelf holders made of transparent plastic are installed (snapped) onto them. If the frame rests on these “legs”, then it will stand steadily and will not swing. It is advisable to place the JOKER-40 legs themselves as close as possible to the edges of the support pipes.

If the frame is supposed to be moved actively and frequently on the floor, then a bushing (JOKER-12) can be hammered into the support pipe, into which the wheel support stud is screwed (for example, JOKER-34A). The frame on wheels can be rolled on the floor in any way you like.

When using translucent balloons of light colors, a situation may arise when the frame begins to “shine through” the balloons. In other words, it will simply become visible through the balls. In order to avoid this, it is recommended to cover all frame pipes with white paper or film. To do this, it is convenient to use paper (film) with an adhesive base.
Note 2:
When using frames outdoors, under high wind loads, there is a danger of the frames located in open areas collapsing or overturning. To prevent these undesirable phenomena, it is recommended to load frame structures with additional loads: water balloons, sandbags, bricks or stones, which need to be tied into the support pipes.

Considering the high cost of frames made of metal pipes, their cost, as a rule, is not included in the cost of decoration with balloons, but is left to the customer on the condition of a deposit. The deposit is returned to the customer only if the frame is returned undamaged and intact.

A pipe with a diameter of 25 mm is difficult to use as a core for cluster weaving. A large pipe diameter will certainly distort the symmetrical shape of clusters made even from 12″ balls. Therefore, it is recommended to place garlands in the foreground and frame pipes in the background. The garlands are simply tied to the pipes.

Assembly and disassembly of frames
Almost all connectors of the UNO and JOKER systems are assembled (tightened) using a hex key. It is convenient to use an L-shaped wrench: the hex on the long side is used to quickly screw on nuts and bolts, and the hex on the short side is used to firmly tighten nuts and bolts.

In order to assemble the frame, you need a complete set of all components (pieces of pipe of the required size, components and connectors according to the list), an hexagon wrench, a building level (or an experienced eye), a level area of sufficient size, and, preferably, an intelligent assistant who will not will be dull.
Using an assembly drawing, all pipe sections are assembled with connectors into a single whole, and, controlling verticality and horizontality with a level, they are pulled together into a solid structure.
After use, the frame structure is disassembled in the reverse order.
We note the need for skill in assembling/disassembling frames. In the absence of skill, if you proceed at random, this procedure can take many hours. Therefore, for each new frame, it is recommended to conduct assembly and disassembly training, preferably together with a knowledgeable or understanding person.

Joker pipe cutting methods - comparison
So I decided to describe the methods by which I sawed pipes of the Joker system, and I tried several of them. I will try to talk about their advantages and disadvantages.
Hacksaw
Let's start with the most accessible one - hacksaws for metal . I started with this method once. We take a hacksaw in our hands and saw. A peculiarity when working is that you need to tighten the pipe “from yourself” after sawing through the wall, otherwise when both walls are sawed at the same time, the teeth cling strongly.
Pros : accessibility and simplicity.
Disadvantages - the process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, the cut edges are not smooth
Jigsaw
Trying to use a power tool, I picked up a jigsaw with a metal file . The work went faster. The tube also needs to be tightened.
Through trial and error, I developed this tactic. First, I file the tube along the marking line with a hacksaw (preferably right through, but not necessarily),
and then I put the saw on this cut and start sawing. This way the work goes faster and the service life of the file is significantly increased.
Pros - speeding up the sawing process; I usually take a jigsaw with me for installations, but I don’t have a hacksaw for metal.
Cons: noisy, uneven cut.
Pipe cutter
I recently purchased this pipe cutter for non-ferrous metals. The thing is quite compact and cuts well. We install the tube in the slot, and gradually tighten the screw to turn the pipe.
A steel roller cuts through the pipe wall in several passes.
Pros: The tool is compact (can be carried even in your pocket). Completely silent operation. Clean, smooth cutting edge. The edges are even slightly rounded - you can see in the photo.
Disadvantages : time-consuming and labor-intensive work. In terms of speed it is inferior to a jigsaw, but outperforms a hacksaw.
Bulgarian
Despite the fact that, to be honest, I’m afraid of grinders, I consider them the best option for sawing pipes, especially if you need to cut a bunch of pipes of the same size. It is better to fix the tube with a pair of clamps to the workbench, and hold the tool with both hands. There is no need to tighten the tube - it will be sawed off just like that.
If you make a small device from a door hinge and a guide from a flat board, and a stop, as shown in the photo, then you can cut a bunch of workpieces of the same size.
Pros: speed and accuracy of work. The possibility of “batch” processing, that is, the use of limiters to obtain several identical parts without additional marking.
Cons: high noise level. High requirements for compliance with safety regulations and the use of personal protective equipment.

Don't forget to calculate the number of pipes. The length of one pipe is 3 m. Such a pipe costs about 100-150 rubles, depending on the thickness of the wall you choose. The thickness must be chosen taking into account the load on the structure.

Assembling the joker system
Transfer your sketch to a piece of paper. We put down the dimensions and select fasteners. We calculate the required number of pipes and connectors. We go to the nearest furniture fittings store.

If the structure is mobile, then it is better to assemble it on the base. Of course, it is better to mount the rigid one in its place. You will need a very small set of tools:

The range of diameters of pipe products of this system is limited to only four positions: 50, 32, 25 and 10 mm, and the length of any of them is 3 meters. At the same time, the pipe with a cross section of 25 mm is in greatest demand.
The locks that secure the pipes are secured with screws with a diameter of 3, 4 or 6 mm

Calculation and arrangement of the structure
The basis of any joker equipment is the frame. This load-bearing part usually consists of chrome-plated tubular elements, which are connected using removable fasteners. Possible dimensions of structures, as well as operating conditions, impose increased reliability requirements on connections. Fastening elements must be of high quality and durable.
To calculate the structure, first of all, the installation site is measured. Then the specific dimensions of the product being created are determined. To simplify the process of selecting its configuration, you can familiarize yourself with examples of equipment implemented using the joker pipe system. This will allow you to draw your own system in your imagination.
Next, the sketch from your head is transferred to a sheet of paper. The dimensions are set on the sketch and the elements of the joker fastening system are selected. After this, the number of required pipes and fasteners is calculated. Select the pipe wall thickness taking into account the load on the structure.
The value of this parameter varies in the range 0.6 ≤ D ≤ 1 mm. Visually distinguishing them is very difficult. Although a pipe with a wall of 1 mm is more expensive, its strength is higher than that of a product with a wall of thinner thickness.
And if this fact is not so critical for a vertical stand, then for a horizontal element it is better to use a thicker-walled version of the pipe.

- locks of several varieties. Angular ones are most often used, but they can be replaced with T-shaped ones;
- a set of joker system pipes themselves. However, if you are creating a small-sized rack, you can get by with one three-meter pipe. The recommended diameter of these products is 25 millimeters.
Pipes are cut to size with a hacksaw or grinder. If you have certain skills, you can assemble the entire structure in literally half an hour. Moreover, for this you only need an Allen key.
Making the task more difficult
Even such a purely functional room as a dressing room can be created using the joker system without any problems. Just follow the instructions below.
- we make the base. The dressing room will rest on it. The base is a chipboard panel with the following geometry: width - 2700 and depth - 500 millimeters. Attach plastic legs to it from below. To ensure that the structure is able to withstand considerable loads, install large ones. Why legs? Then you won't have to drill the floor when installing the racks;

Using clips, we attach a plinth or plinth strip to the front legs. In addition to their decorative function, these elements will create an additional line of support.
- install vertical posts. As such, use chrome-plated joker pipes 2 meters long (read: height). Fittings such as flanges and pipe holders are suitable for fastening. We attach two central posts at a distance of 900 millimeters from the right and left edges;
- install the upper horizontal wall. To make the wardrobe more secure, use a stiffening rib 2700 mm long and 300 mm high. Using confirmations, screw a horizontal wall 482 mm deep and 2700 mm long to it. You can add additional strength to this fastening unit using mounting angles. Attach the stiffener to the wall using dowels, and the vertical posts to the base using the same flanges;
- We install shelves in the dressing room. To do this, we use a type of fastening called shelf holders. They are single- and double-sided. The last option is used when the shelves approach the pipe from both sides. We make the shelves themselves from chipboard and cover all surfaces. The elements of the joker fastening system allow you to install them at any height, so you won’t have any difficulties in this regard either. In the middle section, in order to use the space as efficiently as possible, we will install a shelf at the bottom and top, and in the remaining space we place a pipe for hanging hangers;
- install the pipe for the hanger. This element is just as necessary in the dressing room as in the closet. Installation of two pipes is allowed. In any case, it is assumed that joker fittings such as perpendicular connectors will be used. First, with their help, we attach two sections of pipe perpendicular to the vertical posts, and then, using the same connectors, we attach the pipe for the hangers to them;
- we install modules with drawers. Having made such elements yourself, do not forget to attach chrome railing handles to their facades (there is also such a nomenclature item in the list of joker accessories).
