How to mark a pipe straight along
In households, profile pipes are widely used in the manufacture of greenhouses, greenhouses, canopies to protect vehicles from precipitation and other structures. When working with this material, it is useful to know how to cut a profile pipe along a line or crosswise with the most accurate angle.
Among the large number of construction metal cutting tools, the leader in speed, ease of cutting and efficiency is the angle grinder (grinder), which is often present in the tool kit of any home craftsman. To cut a profile steel pipe using a grinder, you will need a regular metal disc and strict adherence to safety rules - breaking the disc into segments at high rotation speeds can lead to serious injuries.
Fig.1 Profile pipes in the household
How to cut a profile pipe straight across
Most often in households, a rectangular or square pipe metal profile with a wall thickness of no more than 3 mm is used, and cutting into separate sections is necessary when carrying out work on assembling welded frames.
To cut a pipe correctly, additional devices are used to mark and mark the cutting line; some of the devices serve as a support edge for the cutting disk.
The nuances of working with a rectangular section
Rectangular workpieces are much easier to cut lengthwise and crosswise at any angles than cylindrical elements, which are difficult to hold stationary on a flat surface.
Transverse cutting of workpieces at any angle does not present any particular difficulties - the line of the required angular slope is drawn on the side edge and always coincides with the calculated one (round elements require the use of special patterns, calculated on a computer, to align their edges at an angle other than a straight line).
The thickness of the walls of a metal profile when used in households rarely exceeds 5 mm - it is easy to cut using an angle grinder with any metal disc.
Rice. 2 Types of transverse marking methods
What tool is used
As noted above, the main tool for cutting metal parts at home is an angle grinder; if you don’t have one, you can use a hand-held hacksaw or a jigsaw, which can also cut metal materials with a special diamond-coated blade.
For cutting with a grinder, cut-off electrocorundum discs are used, which are not intended for grinding operations. As an auxiliary tool, a tape measure, a metal ruler, various types of clamps, pencils and markers for marking will be useful.
Paper pattern for pipe
Using a paper sheet is a simple method of marking a rectangular or square profile for precise cutting at an angle of 90 or 45 degrees towards its axis.
To make markings for cross cutting at an angle of 90 degrees, take a sheet of paper and wrap it around the pipe until the edges line up exactly, after which they are glued together. With this method, the cutting line is very clearly visible, unlike drawing it with a pencil or marker along the edge of the template.
After this, the profile is cut along the template edge alternately from all sides, trying to avoid complete cutting of the finishing sections - this can lead to the disk hitting sharp corners and its destruction.
A sheet of paper can also be used to mark the side walls of rectangular or square pipes. To do this, the paper sheet is folded diagonally, and the resulting 45-degree angle is applied to the side walls and the appropriate markings are made. To ensure that the side lines are at the same level, an acute angle is applied to the transverse line placed at an angle of 90 degrees to the axis, which is previously applied in the above manner.
Rice. 3 Using a steel template
Miter box for cutting pipes
It is very convenient to cut a profile pipe using a special template, which is an analogue of a construction miter box for cutting building materials at different angles.
To do this, using the above or another method, a metal template is made from a piece of profile pipe cut along the length; it can be designed to obtain a right angle or an angle of 45 degrees.
To cut a metal profile, apply a template to it and draw a line with a scriber, along which a cut is then made. In other cases, the template is held and a grinder is used to draw a line along the surface of the workpiece, trying to avoid strong pressing of the side surface of the disk against the attached metal template. Then the template is removed and cutting continues along a clearly visible depression on the edges of the workpiece.
Using a template, you can get a very straight cut line if you do not hold it manually, but secure it to the workpiece using clamps or mounting bolts.
To make your own fasteners, drill a hole in the side surface of the U-shaped plate of the template and weld a union nut at this point from the outside into which the bolt is screwed.
To secure the template, place it on the part to be cut and screw in the bolt, pressing the template surface against the workpiece, then use a grinder with a metal disc to make a cut, lightly touching the guide edge.
Sensor for the presence of water in the pipe
Rice. 4 How to cut a workpiece with a homemade machine
Other options
A good option for making a template is to use a short piece of larger diameter pipe for marking, the guide edge of which has been pre-cut at the desired angles. When marking, the part is placed on the pipe to be cut, after which its surface is marked with a marker or scriber. The second method is to rigidly fix the template on the workpiece using wedges or clamps, followed by cutting with a metal disc with light pressure on the side surface of the template part.
In order not to cut metal pipes or sheets of iron by eye, some home craftsmen use homemade fastening devices for the grinder, rigidly securing it to a vertically mounted spindle. When moving the tool from top to bottom, a stable, even cut occurs on the part located under the disk; if metal guides are fastened to the machine bed, then when a workpiece is applied to them, any desired cutting angle can be obtained.
Fig.5 Working with thick-walled steel
Cutting large diameter profile pipe
A large-diameter metal profile has thick walls and a lot of weight; if for cutting thin-walled parts (wall thickness up to 2 mm) it was possible to use thin disks of about 1 mm in size, then for cutting thick-walled metal they take 2 mm.
disc circles.
Accordingly, it is more convenient to cut thick walls with a large-diameter disk using a powerful large-sized construction angle grinder - household devices do not have enough power to quickly carry out work, and their small disks quickly wear down.
When performing work, they are guided by the following rules:
- When cutting heavy pipes, they should be placed on a flat surface or low supports in such a way that when cutting the last section, it does not change its position or falls down, preventing the cutting tool from being compressed by its walls.
- If the surface is flat, each face is cut completely, turning the part over; if the support is uneven, the last jumpers are not cut a little, allowing the workpiece to separate under its own weight, after which the protruding area is sanded.
- When working with a grinder to cut heavy metal elements, it is necessary to use a protective casing - the likelihood of the disc delaminating into individual elements is too high.
Many people work with the wrong direction of rotation towards themselves - this leads to the fact that the sharp edge of the metal is constantly raised, the tool is more difficult to hold in a fixed position, and the cutting disc wears off faster. In addition, the reverse direction of rotation of the cutting wheel is dangerous from a safety point of view.
How to cut a profile pipe lengthwise - cutting technology
If cross-cutting a profile does not cause any particular difficulties, then a longitudinal cut, which is necessary for some work in the household, is more complex due to its length.
One of the problems when carrying out this is the accuracy of the markings; to apply it in the center or at another point of the cut edge, marks are placed along the entire length at the same distance from the side wall and then they are connected with a pencil, marker or scriber, using an even corner, construction paper, as a guide. usually a level, a profile from drywall.
Rice. 6 Cutting a pipe lengthwise along a guide angle
In order to cut a metal profile in the longitudinal direction, they drive the angle grinder along the line, gradually cutting a through hole - the method is not very accurate, the tool has to be held suspended without support.
A more convenient way to qualitatively cut a workpiece longitudinally is to use auxiliary supports in the form of a metal corner or even straight plates. To do this, the corner is attached to the surface of the workpiece using clamps and the grinder is guided along its side edge; if the length of the template corner is small, it is unscrewed and moved further to a new place, after which cutting is resumed.
The second way to obtain an even longitudinal cut line is to have a grinder rigidly mounted on a machine or table in a side position. The workpiece being cut is moved along guides, brought to the rotating disk of an angle grinder (the operating principle is reminiscent of an electric tile cutter), the straightness of the resulting line is determined by the rigidity and length of the supporting elements.
Rice. 7 Securing the angle grinder for longitudinal cutting
To obtain the specified sizes and configurations of profile pipes in the household, cutting is used using an angle grinder and inexpensive cutting corundum discs. To get an even and accurate cutting line, it is better to use support guides or homemade steel templates that set the desired angle.

How to properly cut plastic sewer pipes
- Video author: Dmitry Zhidkov

Today I will tell you about evolution. Not in the sense of evolution according to Darwin's theory, but about the evolution of plumbing. There are sewer pipes known to everyone - from the fifties. I want to talk about the evolution of how plumbers cut them.
- Hacksaw
- Bulgarian
- Plastic pipe cutting tool
Hacksaw
The first is a hacksaw. When they come to some object with a pipe and a hacksaw, they do this.
The result is straight edges. And when a pipe is inserted into a pipe, this rubber band is bitten on the edge, so plumbers have to do an additional operation, namely chamfering. This is done either with a knife, respectively, or the pipe simply rubs against the concrete, and a chamfer is obtained.
Why is this method good? It's a small instrument, relatively small. Although we see that ours is quite large and long, and without protection it cannot be moved. Well, if you want to round the edges, you will need a knife.
Bulgarian
More financially secure plumbers carry a small grinder. I'm not talking about Bosh, I'm talking about some cheaper one. Now I will set it up for myself. And accordingly we cut the pipe.
The method is faster than the first one. Using it results in smoother edges. This, of course, also depends on where the hands of the one who is sawing are from, but the edges turn out to be smoother. There is one drawback compared to the first method - it is a chamfer. The chamfer ends up with such burrs, and these edges have to be processed additionally. Well, that'll do. But the grinder becomes overgrown with such cobwebs, chacha, and it is quite difficult to clean it.
Plastic pipe cutting tool
And there is another modern method of pipe processing - the P-TEC 5000 tool. There is an inspection window. We bring it to the depth we have marked and rotate it in a circle. The result is a perfectly straight cut and chamfered edges.
The perfect cut is obtained on two pieces at once, and the chamfer is also on two pieces. Faster, lighter. You don’t need to carry a grinder, you don’t need to carry a hacksaw like this. Very comfortably. The button is pressed, set and off you go.
More convenient than most existing pipe cutters, but there is a drawback. It is only available for 50, 32 and 40 mm pipes. For the last two there is a double-sided device with two holes. Their only disadvantage is that they are closed, that is, the pipe must be pushed inside.

How to cut a sewer plastic pipe
In order to lay sewer pipes, you don’t have to resort to the services of specialists, but do everything yourself.
For sewerage installation, plastic pipes are usually used, as they have such advantages as durability, lightness, corrosion resistance and ease of assembly.
Laying sewer pipes with your own hands is carried out according to certain rules; external sewerage has its own characteristics.
First of all, you need to cut them into sections of the required length, then they need to be connected together with shaped elements. After the pipeline assembly is completed, it is attached to the wall.
Connection of sewerage elements
You can cut plastic sewer pipes using a hacksaw or a special tool that creates a chamfer on the cut.
Before laying pipes, they must be transported and stored. In order to avoid pipe deformation, you need to prepare a smooth surface. When laying sewer pipes, it is sometimes necessary to cut them to ensure accurate installation.
Such work can be done with your own hands; a special tool is used for this, forming a chamfer on the cut edge, but you can also use a regular hacksaw for this purpose. After the edge is cut, it is cleaned and beveled at an angle of 150 degrees. This is done to ensure that the sealing ring is not damaged and to carry out installation in a short time.
It is very important to know that fittings and shaped parts cannot be cut. After this, you should check whether the bevel is made correctly on the cut edge, and then proceed to directly connecting the parts.
To lay sewer pipes, silicone-based lubricant should be applied to the smooth ends of the elements. This is done in order to:
- easy connection during assembly was ensured;
- the coefficient of friction that occurs between the sealing ring and the pipe during operation when temperature fluctuations occurs has been reduced;
- eliminate the possibility of sticking and reduce the degree of internal stress of the system;
- The rubber seal retained its operational and technical qualities longer.
It should be remembered that the inside of the bell is not lubricated!
After this, the smooth section of the sewerage elements is pushed into the socket until it stops (the place of their contact should be marked). The smooth edge extends from the socket (distance up to 10 mm) and is left for fixation. This creates a gap that will compensate for changes in pipe length when temperature changes occur and prevent internal stress on the system.
Fixing sewer pipes
To fix sewer pipes, use a fastening clamp, which is installed at the junction of the pipes under the coupling.
Before proceeding to the stage of fixing the sewer pipes, the diagram of the sewer pipes according to which the installation is being made is carefully studied.
In order to fix the pipeline system, fastening clamps are used; they are installed under the coupling (this will ensure the connection of the pipeline sections). As for the distance, it should not exceed 10 pipe diameters in horizontal sections and be equal to 100-200 cm in vertical sections. The most optimal distance between the pipe and the wall is 4 mm.
When laying sewer pipes with your own hands, you need to ensure that there is no internal tension in them. For this purpose, floating and rigid mounts are used. When mounted rigidly, it is held without displacement in all directions. Fastening can also be achieved using sound-absorbing clamps with a rubber gasket.
When using a floating fastening, the clamp bolts should not be tightened too much, which ensures free movement of the pipeline in the longitudinal direction.
Pipeline diagram in concrete
It happens that concreting of sewer pipes and fittings is required. This can also be done with your own hands, while standard installation rules are observed (presence of a 10 mm gap).
The pipeline should be secured in such a way that its fixation is reliable and it does not change its position during operation.
Gaps form between the sockets and couplings, which should be sealed with adhesive tape, while the holes are closed.
Pipeline diagram in the wall
The pipes in the wall are laid in such a way that there is no internal stress. If laying sewer pipes with your own hands is carried out with plastering, then they should be completely wrapped with soft material: mineral fiber, corrugated cardboard, fiberglass.
When laying sewer pipes in the wall and then plastering them, they need to be wrapped in soft material.
For internal sewerage in many houses (especially older ones) cast iron materials are used. In order to connect them with polymer ones, the following scheme has been developed:
- The end of the cast iron pipe and the socket are connected by means of a transition pipe with the corresponding internal diameter.
- A double seal gasket is installed on the plain end and then the seal is installed without lubrication.
- The connection between the socket and the smooth end of the polymer pipe is made using a double sealing gasket.
When installing sewer pipes you will need:
- coupling;
- knee;
- transitions;
- stub;
- audit;
- clamp;
- cross.
When laying sewer lines with your own hands, you should choose high-quality materials. If you do the external sewerage yourself, then you need to have reliable thermal insulation from the external environment. You can lay a sewer line yourself without any difficulty. If everything is done correctly, the sewage system will last for many years, and it is not at all necessary to have “golden hands” for this.

How to cut asbestos-cement pipes - Pipes and plumbing
Over the past 50 years, asbestos-cement pipes have become very popular for various types of work. This is due to the fact that such products are quite easy to install, they are resistant to aggressive environments and last longer than their metal counterparts. However, the problem of cutting asbestos cement pipes often arises. How to do this correctly?
Cutting asbestos-cement pipes with an angle grinder
The most common method is cutting asbestos-cement pipes with an angle grinder (also known as angle grinder, grinder; something like BOSCH GWS 850 CE Professional or MAKITA GA5030K).
In this case, there are 2 types of work, depending on the equipment used:
- Grinder with a disc for stone . Cutting using this method requires the effort of two people. One of them should cut the pipe with a grinder, and the second should spray a very thin stream of water onto the cutting site. In this case, the dust from cutting will not scatter throughout the room, but will flow down in the form of dirt.
- Grinder with a diamond blade . Here you will need a respirator, construction glasses and other protective equipment. To reduce the amount of dust that gets on a person when cutting, you need to carry out this process in an open space on the leeward side so that all the dust flies to the side. If you cut a pipe in winter, you can lay it directly on the snow so that the particles of material remain below.
And if not, alternative technologies
If you don't have an angle grinder, you can use a cutter or hacksaw. Let's consider these technologies for cutting asbestos-cement pipes.
- Hacksaw. It is quite possible to cut a pipe with a regular hacksaw, but it will take quite a lot of effort and time. Initially, the pipe should be wetted, since asbestos cement is cut much easier in its wet state, and if you cut the pipe dry, the process will become extremely tedious and ineffective. Then you should mark the cut line, moisten rags in water and lay them for several hours along the intended cut site. Wet asbestos cement will be much more elastic and will cut easily. Do not press too hard on the pipe when cutting to prevent it from splitting.
- Cutter. To do this, you will need a cutter similar to a plastic cutter, but larger in size and made of high-quality metal. The pipe should be placed on a flat surface and, using a ruler, make a scratch on the cutter in the form of a straight section. Then deepen it a millimeter and further. You can place a small strip inside the pipe under the scratch and break it along the cut line. This process does not generate much dust.
The above methods for cutting asbestos cement are the most popular, but if they do not suit you, you can use alternative technologies:

How to cut plastic pipes
When installing various pipelines, plastic pipes are increasingly replacing steel ones. This is facilitated by factors such as:
- a wide variety of products made from different types of plastic;
- high resistance of plastic to corrosion and overgrowing of walls with limescale;
- the lightness of plastic pipes, which greatly facilitates the installation of pipelines;
- lower cost of plastic compared to metal pipes, significantly reducing the estimated cost of laying pipelines;
- long service life.
Therefore, plastic pipes are widely used in both industrial and private housing construction.
What tool can be used to cut plastic pipes
Considering that the people in our country are artisans, then they manage to use the most unimaginable means at hand to cut pipes. But you should not think that such cutting contributes to the good quality of the future pipeline. Therefore, we will consider the tools that allow you to cut plastic pipes with the highest quality:
- hacksaw for metal;
- self-sharpening knife (with fine teeth);
- scissors for cutting plastic pipes;
- roller type pipe cutter;
- battery pipe cutter;
- guillotine pipe cutter.
Cutting pipes with a hacksaw or a knife should not be considered seriously, since their use leads to the end of the pipe being frayed and burrs forming, which must be eliminated using sandpaper or stripping with a knife.
In any case, the quality of the cut suffers. These methods can be used for single cuts. If the pipeline has a complex configuration and many connections of individual sections, then it is better not to use these tools. Pipe shears are mainly used for cutting plastic pipes.
The sharpened blade of the knife is attached to only one side of the tool. In place of the second blade there is a fairly wide base with a slot designed to receive a cutting plate.
Working with such scissors is carried out exclusively by human muscular strength. Between the handles of the scissors there is a rounded toothed rack, which, after closing the handles of the scissors, pushes the blade towards the base.
The pipe cutting process occurs as follows:
- a clearly visible mark is placed on the surface of the pipe, marking the place of the cut;
- the base is placed on top of this mark, controlling its position through the slot in the base;
- then, applying force, they cut into the pipe and, gradually increasing the force, make the final cut of the pipe.
The advantages of scissors are their fairly high efficiency and low cost design. The disadvantage is considered to be a direct connection between the effectiveness of the tool and the physical strength of the person working with it. In addition, during cutting, it is necessary to ensure a smooth movement of the brush, otherwise the blade may simply slip off the rack.
It is clear that with a large number of cuts, the hand quickly gets tired, so the speed of work is reduced. In addition, scissors cannot cut large diameter pipes. The maximum diameter of processed pipes is 42 mm.
In terms of efficiency, a pipe cutter is no worse than scissors. But, unlike them, there is practically no physical effort when working here. The cutting process itself occurs as follows:
- Place a mark at the cut site with a marker;
- the screw is unscrewed from the clamp, and the bracket is brought to the cutting site;
- then the screw is smoothly tightened (so that the pipe does not burst);
- After creating the required force on the cutting roller, the clamp begins to rotate around the pipe, smoothly tightening the tension screw.
Thus, a circular cut of the pipe is made, while the end of the pipe is very smooth, without burrs. The only danger when working with a pipe cutter is the appearance of cracks in the pipe due to too much pressure from the screw.
The guillotine pipe cutter is used to work with pipes with a diameter of 63 to 350 mm. At the same time, the likelihood of deformation or destruction of the pipe walls is reduced to almost zero. The cutting process is as follows:
- Mark the place of the cut on the pipe and insert it into the guillotine, securing it in a sector from 30 to 60 degrees;
- the guillotine blade, which is mounted on wheels, swings around it;
- After the first cut of the plastic, the blade is immersed in the pipe using a rotating screw handle and, thus, the pipe is finally cut.
In this case, the cut is very smooth, without burrs. Guillotine blades are easily replaced. Modern guillotines have blades additionally coated with Teflon.
Other Plastic Pipe Cutting Tools
They are rarely used when there is no pipe cutter at hand:
- Grinder – to cut pipes you will need a metal cutting disc. The main point when working with an angle grinder is to accurately regulate the force; you cannot put too much pressure on the tool.
- A jigsaw is the most convenient way in the absence of special scissors. There is a high probability of getting an oblique cut, so for greater accuracy during operation the pipe must be turned several times.
What is strictly not recommended for cutting pipes:
- Band saw - its blade moves too slowly and if it is not sharp enough, there is a high probability of damage to the internal diameter of the pipe, which leads to chips and cracks.
- Circular machine. Because plastic pipes are flexible, pushing them into the machine often causes the pipe to dislodge and impact, which is dangerous for the person making the cut.
Tools for processing pipe cuts
Bevel remover – designed to improve the quality of welding of plastic pipes. It is used to remove the edge or top layer of plastic pipes along the diameter.
On sale you can find chamfer removers of various designs designed to work with pipes of different diameters. When purchasing, you need to decide on the scope of work and pipe material. The tool comes with both manual and automatic feed. It allows you to adjust to the required pipe diameter and wall thickness.
Caliber – necessary for working with metal-plastic pipes. With its help, before soldering the pipes, the aluminum layer on the pipe cut is cleaned. In addition, the gauge allows you to remove burrs and cut irregularities, as well as, if necessary, chamfer.
If the pipe is slightly dented during cutting and the cut has acquired an oval shape, the calibrator will straighten the end, making it perfectly round again. A separate calibrator is required for each specific pipe diameter.

How to cut an asbestos cement pipe
Asbestos-cement pipes are very popular in construction. It cannot be otherwise, because such pipes are easy to install, resistant to aggressive environments and have a service life longer than their metal counterparts. But very often during work it is necessary to cut these products, so many people are concerned with the question: how to cut asbestos-cement pipes?
Cutting pipes with a grinder
- Grinder with a disc for stone. This type of cutting requires two people. One will cut the pipe with a grinder, and the second should pour a small and thin stream of water from a plastic bottle onto the cutting area. In this case, all the dust will not fly in the air, but will flow down in the form of dirt onto the ground.
- Grinder with a diamond wheel. Here you will also need safety glasses, a respirator and other protective equipment. To solve the problem with asbestos dust, work outside and you need to stand on the leeward side, then all the dust will be blown away. If you cut a pipe in winter, then place it directly on the snow and then all the dust will remain on the snow.
With this cutting method, you need to immediately remove the remaining asbestos dust from the angle grinder and other objects, otherwise it will harden and it will be quite difficult to remove it later.
We cut pipes with a hacksaw and cutter
- Hacksaw. You can try cutting an asbestos-cement pipe with a hacksaw. But to do this, you need to wet the pipe, since it is much easier to cut asbestos cement in its raw form, and if you just cut the pipe, the process will be long and tedious. First, mark the cut line, then soak rags in water and lay them lengthwise at the cut site for two hours. Wet asbestos cement will become more elastic and cut much easier.
Do not press too hard on the pipe, otherwise it may split.
- Cutter. You will need a cutter like for plastic, only larger and made of better steel. Place the pipe on a flat place and, under the ruler, make a scratch on the pipe with a cutter in the form of a straight line. Then deepen it to a millimeter and deeper. Place a thin strip inside the pipe under the scratch and break it along the cut line. There won't be a lot of dust.
Also read: Parameters of asbestos-cement pipe: weight, length and diameter
Other methods
- An ordinary axe. Take an ordinary ax and use it to chop the pipe along the marked lines. You will have to strike more than once at the same place to break the pipe initially, then the work will become easier. Of course, it won’t come out very smoothly, but it will be quick and effective.
- Circular. You can cut an asbestos-cement pipe using a circular saw. Instead of the usual disk, you need to put a disk with carbide teeth on it.
- Slate nail.
If you don't have any tools, try this simple method. Mark a cutting line on the pipe, then take a slate nail and punch holes along the entire line. The more often the holes are located, the better. Place a thin, long object, such as a block of wood, under the pipe. Then carefully break the pipe along the line with the holes.
Of course, the cut line may turn out uneven, it all depends on the accuracy of breaking and the number of holes.

This is due to the fact that such products are quite easy to install, they are resistant to aggressive environments and last longer than their metal counterparts. How to cut polypropylene pipes without a pipe cutter
When laying polypropylene pipes, you need to cut them into pieces of the required length. An even cut without burrs of material and sawdust greatly facilitates subsequent work and the quality of the resulting joints.
How to cut pipes
We are a smart people; they manage to adapt the most unimaginable tools and devices for cutting material. But cutting with improvised tools is unable to ensure the quality of the pipeline.
For this reason, you need to know what you can use for this and what you shouldn't:
- hacksaw for metal;
- pipe cutters of various designs;
- self-sharpening knife;
- band-saw;
- Bulgarian;
- jigsaw;
- scissors for plastic.
There is no point in seriously considering using a hacksaw for metal work; during work, the end becomes terry, burrs appear on it, which will have to be removed later using sandpaper or a knife. No matter what you do, the quality of the cut is poor. It is acceptable to use it for single cuts. When making a pipeline with many connections and turns, it is better to prepare a special tool.
Specialists use special scissors. Their sharp blade is placed on one side of the device. The second blade replaces the base with a special slot into which the cutting plate passes. When working with this tool, the hand gets tired; it is very difficult to quickly cut a lot of material with them. They cannot cut thick pipes; the maximum diameter is no more than 42 mm.
When using a grinder, you need to prepare a metal disc. When working, it is important to accurately distribute the force - you cannot put too much pressure on the grinder.
A jigsaw is the easiest to work with if you don’t have a special pipe cutter. But the possibility of making an uneven cut increases sharply; for this reason, it is advisable to gradually rotate the pipe while working.
What absolutely should not be used for cutting
Band saw - the tool blade rotates very slowly for this job, and if the saw teeth are not sharp enough, damage to the inside of the pipe may occur, causing cracks and chips.
Circular machine - polypropylene bends well. When pushing into the machine, there is a risk of material bending and impact, which can lead to injury to the person working.
A self-sharpening knife (with serrations) is more difficult to work with, the reason being that there is a layer of aluminum in the middle of the pipe. But if there is no other tool, you can prepare several sections.
The disadvantages of these methods are that during operation, the plastic begins to “shag”, pieces of material appear at the joints, they can subsequently get inside the pipe and clog the filter during system operation. And no one needs this. To eliminate such shortcomings, several additional tools are used.
- Bevel remover - used to align the edge of the cut and, as a result, for better welding quality. It allows you to remove the edge or remove the top part of the plastic along the diameter of the pipe;
- Calibrator - if during cutting you crumpled the cut and it became oval, then this tool will allow you to straighten the end.
For different diameters you need to use your own calibrator.
When planning the assembly of a pipeline from polypropylene pipes, you need to think through the work process in advance and prepare the tools. The required set of tools is selected taking into account the complexity of the assembly, the diameter of the pipes and the dimensions of the pipeline.

In order to cut the pipe straight along, it is very important to choose the right tool. The quality of work largely depends on it. So, let's look at the most suitable tools for working on a pipe:
- Bracelet with a hole. This equipment is designed specifically for making the cut. It is convenient and allows you to get the job done efficiently;
- Jigsaw. Allows you to make an even and neat cut. In this case, you do not have to purchase special equipment;
- File. And in this case, the cut is smooth and of high quality. However, working with both a file and a jigsaw takes quite a lot of time;
- Bulgarian. The tool allows you to get the job done quickly and relatively easily. However, there are also disadvantages. The cut is not even enough.
You can choose the tool that suits you best, or that you already have in your workshop.
Completing of the work
First, let's look at how to cut a pipe lengthwise using a bracelet with a slot. The work is done simply. You need to put the device with the slot up on the structure, and then, holding the structure tightly, make an incision. Then the bracelet is removed, a saw is taken, and placed in the hole of the device. The bracelet is attached with the slot facing down. After this, you can cut the pipe lengthwise evenly.
You can use another method. The pipe is placed on a smooth surface. Then it is firmly fixed. The structure must be secured on both sides. This can be done using massive corners. For reliability, it is recommended to secure the structure over its entire surface using a block. This way you can prevent it from rotating while doing work.
Then the peaks are marked. An outline is made using a string dipped in ink. The size of the circle is measured. A template is made, which is a thread half a circle long. It is fixed on nails. From the line drawn earlier, points on the other edge of the structure are indicated. Then you can cut the pipe lengthwise.
This can be done using any of the tools described earlier.
There is a third method. Two points on the surface are indicated. The thread is pulled in accordance with them. To clearly mark the line and prevent it from becoming clogged with construction debris, you can secure paper tape in this place. Its edge should correspond to the edge of the stretched rope.
It is this edge that marks the place where the incision is made. After this, you can cut the pipe lengthwise. If you are making a cut using a hacksaw blade on metal surfaces, for ease of work it is recommended to attach a rag or other material to the edge of the blade.
They will allow you to more securely grip the canvas with your hands.
To make a straight cut on a pipe, there are many other methods invented by folk craftsmen. Each method has its pros and cons. The choice is ultimately yours. You can find out even more options for performing this work by viewing additional materials: photos, videos.

how to cut a plastic pipe lengthwise
Construction and Repair to the question: how to cut a plastic pipe with a diameter of 110 mm and 3 m in length in half lengthwise? asked by the author Kos2kos the best answer is a Hot string on a table with a guide
Answer from 2 replies[guru]
Hello! Here is a selection of topics with answers to your question: how to cut a plastic pipe with a diameter of 110 mm and 3 m in length in half lengthwise?
Answer from Andrey Buchnev[guru]Bulgarian.
Answer from Lexx[guru]A jigsaw for 5 minutes of work.
Answer from Alexandre Romanov[guru]I would make a kind of box, clamp it between two boards lying on the edges, on top or a third, or with plywood and saw one side with a circular saw, then turn the pipe in this box over and saw it on the other side. .This depends on the technical capabilities and the required accuracy. Otherwise I would simply draw a longitudinal line and fix the pipe with an ordinary jigsaw.
Answer from Gennadi wer[guru] I agree with Andrey, the grinder is the most optimal.
Answer from Denis Gemini[guru]Good question! Like making a gutter using a hot string is good advice. But it’s much easier to put together a device from wood, firmly insert a knife blade into it (there are construction knives that are very sharp (at an angle) and from time to time heat it up by applying a hot iron or permanently connect it into the structure.
The cutting will take place due to the fact that you drag the pipe towards you or push it away from you. The device (box) should cover it on all sides. Blade from below or from above. You can lean an iron (massive aluminum) against it. Pull slowly. If you don’t cut right through the first time, at least mark a furrow. And then cut through with a knife. Then the same thing but on the other side.
When heated, plastic and polypropylene become like soft butter! (change the blade from time to time)
Answer from Mikhail [guru] without any problems, put it on the boards, hammer in the nails so that it doesn’t dangle, if there is nowhere to hold it, beat it with a cord and a hacksaw with a fine tooth, and then on the other side if there is no jigsaw
Answer from FILIN-VP[guru] with a jigsaw along a guide
Answer from Gorynych [guru] We saw with a grinder.
The answer from Selkov Sergey [active] with a hacksaw is the simplest, but difficult. Technology is faster

How to cut plastic pipes: 3 simple options
All photos from the article
PVC pipe is one of the most versatile and useful building materials, but you still need a method to cut it down to size. There are many methods (including different types of tools/cutter brands) for cutting PVC, but we have provided several methods and tools shown below to cut PVC pipes easily and safely.
Hacksaw/Back Saw
This is what a typical hacksaw looks like
A hacksaw or back saw are the most common methods for cutting PVC pipe, as most people already have one of these in their toolbox or garage.
Hacksaws and back saws work well, but they are time-consuming and can result in extra work to remove burrs from the edges of the cut PVC pipe. A hacksaw or backsaw is an ideal tool if you only need to cut one or a few pieces of pipe.
Back saws usually come with a miter box and can be used together to make straight, even cuts.
Scissor pipe cutter
Scissors are suitable for PVC no thicker than an inch thick.
PVC pipe cutters are inexpensive and easy to use. They are available at most hardware stores or home improvement centers in the plumbing section. They are, however, limited in their cutting ability and can add strain to your hands as they are ideal for smaller pipes. Plastic pipe cutters should only be used on PVC that is 1 inch thick or less.
Ratchet Pipe Cutter

The power saw is ideal for cutting large quantities of PVC pipes. Power saws, however, are expensive. If you already have one or have access to one and know how to use it safely, you can use an existing wooden blade to cut PVC pipe without purchasing a special blade. Be sure to read and understand the instructions that came with your miter saw.
