How to bend a pipe without a pipe bender with your own hands?
Surely you have encountered a situation when, when assembling a pipeline, it becomes necessary to bend the pipe to a certain degree.
For such tasks, a special tool called a pipe bender is used. Pipe benders come in a variety of different types. They are intended for bending pipes made of metals, plastics, various alloys, etc.
All this is of course very good, but what to do if you need to bend a pipe without a pipe bender? For example, if you don’t have a pipe bender, but the matter is urgent.
Bending a metal-plastic pipe with a spring inside
Well, there are ways to perform similar actions with your own hands. We will tell you about them.
Process Features
In fact, bending pipes is quite easy. It just seems that such actions require a huge amount of strength and energy. Of course, when working with metal pipes you still have to work hard, but even in this case the process takes only a few tens of minutes, and this takes into account the preparatory work.
But simply bending the pipe is not enough. You need to do this correctly so that you end up with a working and not a damaged sample. If we bend pipes with our own hands, then the chance of damage increases significantly, since bending a pipe at home can only be done using improvised means.
The thing is that when the pipe is bent, it changes its structure and naturally deforms. And the deformation process is unpredictable.
It only seems that the model made of the same steel bends beautifully and smoothly, as if by magic maintaining its shape.
Actually this is not true. At the moment of bending, especially if you work only with improvised means, the walls of the pipe are deformed unevenly.
The inner wall seems to accumulate more material at one point, becomes thicker, and even microscopic folds form. The outer one, on the contrary, stretches, which is fraught with the appearance of microcracks. Bend it too quickly or without preliminary preparation and its damage will be almost inevitable.
How to protect yourself?
However, you can easily protect yourself or at least reduce the chance of pipe damage to a minimum. To do this, several tricks are used.
Firstly, when bending with your own hands, the pipe is heated to a certain temperature. This is normal; bending a segment, especially a steel one, without heating is extremely difficult. You will spend a lot of effort and energy, but the result is unlikely to please you.
Whether the surface of the pipe has reached the required temperature is checked using ordinary paper. It is considered that the pipe has warmed up if the piece of paper begins to smolder upon contact with it.
Steel pipe bending process
The method, of course, is rather clumsy and gives only relative results, but for homework you don’t need more.
Secondly, a stabilizing material must be added to the pipe cavity. This is done until it warms up.
Various options are used as stabilizing material, from sand to springs. The pipe is plugged on both sides, and then they get to work.
Inside the pipe, sand acts as a plasticizer. It prevents the material from deforming jerkily, while maintaining the original shape of the workpiece, which is also extremely important.
Also, before starting work, it is necessary to create a wooden or steel blank to simplify the deformation process. You don’t have to go through a lot of pain to create something, you just need to choose the right material.
For example, if you need to bend a pipe at a right angle with your own hands, then having a profile pipe or a table will suffice.
If the bend radius is large enough, then you will have to select a return pipe of the required size or a wooden log.
Differences depending on pipe material
The material of a pipe has a huge impact on how we interact with it.
Pipes are divided into:
- Metal;
- Plastic.
Metal pipes require one approach, plastic pipes require a completely different approach. In addition, specific materials differ in their strength, stability, principle of deformation, etc. All this should be taken into account, especially when we work without a specialized tool, that is, with our own hands.
Interaction with metal samples
Metal pipes are the most difficult to bend at home. Yes, by the way, you understand this yourself.
The metal, although ductile, is very durable. You simply cannot cope with it manually, without prior preparation.
Before processing, it is advisable to heat the pipe with a burner.
But if you think through everything in advance, then the result will probably please you. Also, let's not forget that there are soft metals and hard ones. Non-ferrous metals are mostly soft. It's easier to work with them.
The same copper, if desired, is generally deformed by hand. You can actually bend a thin copper pipe by hand, which is what plumbers often use.
Reinforced copper is already stronger, but still cannot be compared in strength to steel or good aluminum.
The working process
Let's consider an algorithm that allows us to bend metal sections of pipes with our own hands.
Stages of work:
- We prepare the tool, find the burner, collect sand, plugs, etc.
- We pour sand inside the pipe.
- We seal it.
- We heat it with a gas burner.
- Checking the heating temperature. If the paper sheet catches fire or begins to smolder upon contact with metal, then everything is fine and you can start.
- We mount the pipe into working position.
- We bend the segment using physical force. It is advisable to do this with gloves, as metals are excellent conductors of heat.
- When the desired angle is reached, leave the pipe for a day.
That's all. After completing the work, all that remains is to check the quality of the bend. Unfortunately, this cannot be done in a heated state.
Additional Tips
Sand should be poured until the pipe is completely filled. It is advisable to take steel plugs rather than plastic ones. The plastic may melt and bond to the steel. Nothing terrible will happen, of course, but we don’t need any unnecessary problems either.
You can even bend a small diameter pipe manually using a reinforced shoulder
The pipe is heated evenly, that is, from all sides, focusing on the outside. This is where the most serious deformations will take place.
A heated pipe may only be bent while wearing heat-resistant gloves. Otherwise you might get burned. And in general, if you are going to act according to the instructions given, then it is advisable to take care of your personal safety, put on equipment, etc.
We recommend bending the pipe not in jerks, but in progressive, smooth movements. However, here everyone acts as he sees possible.
Working with plastic pipes
It is easier to bend plastic, this is quite obvious. It is much softer, in many cases more flexible, and weighs lighter. However, plastic has one unpleasant characteristic: it has a tensile strength. That is, it can crack if the application of force is excessive. This must be taken into account.
Remember that a crack in a pipe is not necessarily a huge hole you can stick your finger into. The formation of such a crack in a pipe is a great blessing, because it is easy to notice.
Problems appear when microcracks or even the beginnings of cracks form in the plastic. They are invisible and will wait in the wings, then at the most inopportune moment to declare themselves.
Differences between pipes made from different types of plastic
The easiest way to work is with metal-plastic. This material is a combination of aluminum rod and plastic alloy, it is very strong yet flexible at the same time.
The process of bending it is practically no different from that when interacting with steel samples. Moreover, if the pipe is small in diameter, there is no need to even warm it up. You can simply bend it with your hands. But again, you need to make sure there is a stabilizer in its cavity so that the deformation is successful.
Not only sand can be used as a stabilizer. Wire or even a high-strength steel spring works well.
You can also bend polypropylene, but you have to be very careful. Manufacturers of polypropylene pipes do not recommend bending them yourself. If this is still necessary, then make sure you have a hair dryer.
They can warm up the walls of the pipe, and then bend it on a pre-prepared workpiece. Place the pipe so that the thick wall is on the outside of the bend. Then the chance of damage to the segment will be significantly reduced.
Thin plastic pipes seem to be the easiest to bend. But they break under physical impact. Here you need to use cunning and the same heat treatment.
Using a construction hairdryer, we heat the pipe to a temperature of 200 degrees, and then easily and smoothly begin to bend it. In some cases, the plastic will become so soft that it will begin to bend. Then just arrange it the way you need it, and then try to fix it.

How to properly bend a polypropylene pipe at home and avoid deformation - Prof Pipes
For an owner who is a jack of all trades, nothing is impossible. This is how it is in the situation with polyethylene pipes.
Manufacturers do not advise bending them, but craftsmen don’t care: they take and “sculpt” from the structures what is needed on the farm.
And such aces are also willing to share their successful experience, so now you will learn how to bend a polypropylene pipe, bypassing the prohibitions of manufacturers of such products.
Bend the plastic structure is quite easy
Basic rules for working with plastic
Is it possible to bend polypropylene pipes using any existing technology for bending structures made of another material? The most suitable of these methods is the method of working with steel, which involves heating. However, the plastic must be heated in a special way. Do not use household gas burners, lighters, soldering irons or lamps. You need a special hair dryer - a construction hair dryer.
Work should be carried out in a special place where children and pets do not have access. There should be no flammable objects or open fire nearby. To avoid damaging your hands or burning your skin, wear gloves.
How to bend polypropylene pipes without deforming them? If you prefer the hot method, the main thing is not to overheat and bend the product smoothly, slowly.
Have you decided to bend pipes using cold technology? You may be surprised, but the risk of damaging the structure with this option is greater.
To avoid trouble, keep an eye on the bend radius of the pipe, which should not be larger in size than this value: the diameter of the pipe multiplied by 8.
The basic rule of bending is not to rush
So, how to bend a polypropylene pipe with your own hands? There are two ways:
- Cold method.
- Hot technology.
Let's talk in more detail about each of the methods.
You cannot heat the plastic above 170 degrees - watch the temperature
Hot bending technology
Hot methods of working with pipes are more common. Let's learn the most popular technologies.
Using the molding machine
This technique is applicable if you have a special device. However, the unit can be borrowed from neighbors or friends for a while. So, remember the step-by-step instructions on how to bend polypropylene pipes using a molding machine.
- Make the frame according to the intended shape that you plan to give to the plastic element of the system. For preparation, use fibreboard. Sand the finished frame using sandpaper.
- Using a molding machine, using silicone, make a shell to connect the pipe being processed to the frame. This step will protect the polypropylene from deformation (dents, chips) during operation.
- Place the pipe into the shell.
- Secure the structure into the frame.
- Transfer the prepared set to the molding unit.
- Heat the material.
- Wait until the softened plastic settles on the frame and takes the desired shape.
- Let the product cool (about 10 minutes).
- Remove the structure.
- Leave the bent pipe alone for some time (until the material has completely cooled).
This is what a molding machine looks like
Using a hair dryer or burner
If you can’t afford to buy a molding machine, and there’s no one to borrow such a miracle unit, it doesn’t matter. The pipe can also be bent using simpler “devices”, for example, a hair dryer or even a gas burner.
As with the above option, prepare a template using fiberboard.
Determine the place of the bend and begin to heat (using a hair dryer or burner) this fragment of the product. The heating method is different from machine technology.
The pipe must be rotated around its axis, controlling the uniform heating of the material over the entire surface of the structure. When the consistency of the plastic begins to resemble plasticine, you can begin the main block of work - bending.
Attach the product to the prepared form and gradually bring the bend to the planned angle. Don't rush, otherwise a gap will appear.
When you bend the structure, keep it on the form for about a quarter of an hour until it cools completely.
Heating method with a construction hairdryer
Cold method
This technology is much simpler than the hot method, as well as much riskier. You will have to work with a “cold” structure, carefully monitoring the bend radius, which in size should not exceed an indicator greater than eight diameters of the structure.
Upon completion of work, carefully check the product for cracks, since the risk of gaps is high.
Only experienced craftsmen successfully cope with cold technology, but no one is stopping you from joining their ranks. Try it!
The cold method is the “trick” of aces in construction matters
Now you know how to bend a polypropylene pipe without resorting to the services of professionals. Good luck!

How to bend a HDPE pipe at home: bending angles up to 90 degrees,
: 24.08.2019
When installing water supply and sewerage systems made of polyethylene, sometimes it becomes necessary to go around an obstacle and change the direction of laying the pipeline. If there are no suitable fittings at hand, and also to reduce the cost of work, the question arises - how to bend a HDPE pipe and whether it is possible to carry out such an operation at all. It is quite possible. Next, we will consider a number of ways to give a pipe the desired bend angle yourself or in a production environment.
Features of low pressure polyethylene pipes
Pipes made of low-density polyethylene (HDPE or HDPE according to the international classification) are increasingly replacing metal pipes from use in construction.
Bend angle
The sensitivity of the material to heat, its elasticity and lightness make it possible to create blanks from HDPE pipes in order to change the direction of the laid pipeline and go around obstacles.
It should be taken into account that the bending angle should not exceed 90°.
Angles of 30, 45, 60, 90 degrees are considered standard.
Melting temperature
When molding polyethylene pipe products, it is necessary to take into account the temperature characteristics of the material. Its softening begins at a temperature of +80Сo, and melting occurs from +130Со to +137С о. It is at this temperature that HDPE pipes are produced.
Bending methods
HDPE is both a very durable and flexible material. This allows you to heat the workpiece to a softened state, and then bend the pipe, giving it the required bend angle.
Production
For this purpose, special molding industrial equipment is used - high-precision molding machines.
Achieving a specific bend radius is calculated based on the ratio of the cross section to the outer diameter.
This is done in two ways:
- rolling a roller around a template with a given bending radius without filler;
- screwing onto a bending template using a mandrel inside that protects against damage.
Household
If it is impossible to use molding machines to bend HDPE pipes, less precise methods are used, based on the use of available equipment or improvised means for heating. The bending of the pipe, as in the industrial method, is carried out by forming a given angle according to a pre-made bending template
Using a hair dryer
A safe and effective method for doing the job at home. It is important to have a hair dryer of sufficient power with precise adjustment of the operating temperature.
Operating principle:
- heating the bending area,
- forming (bending) the workpiece according to the template.
At a low operating temperature or a significant distance between the hair dryer and the surface of the material, the softening of the polymer will be insufficient, so there is a high risk that the pipe wall will deform or crack when bending.
Using a gas burner
According to the principle of operation, the method is an alternative to using an electric hair dryer. But this option is significantly inferior to the previous one in terms of safety: experience with such equipment is required.
If the burner is close to the polyethylene, it may melt or ignite.
The advantage is the possibility of use in places where there is no power supply, as well as the lower cost of purchasing a 200 ml cylinder for a gas burner (compared to a medium-power construction hair dryer).
Hot water treatment
The simplest, but ineffective method in the absence of a hair dryer or gas burner. At home, using hot water it is quite difficult to evenly heat the wall thickness, as well as the surface area required for bending. If the amount of work is small and the pipe diameter is no more than 50 mm, it is quite possible to use a regular kettle.
Hot water can be replaced with bulk materials, such as salt or river sand. It is necessary to heat them to the desired temperature, for example in a frying pan or baking sheet, pour them into the pipe and wait for the product to heat up. After this, carefully bend and let cool.
Bending HDPE pipes at home
Before starting work, prepare:
- fibreboard (fibreboard) or board for making your own bending template;
- the pipe that you will bend;
- a tool available to you for heating the workpiece (gas burner, hair dryer or container of hot water).
Safety regulations
Work at home without following safety regulations can lead to burns of varying severity and even fire.
- Choose a place to work away from flammable objects.
- When working with heating devices, use protective clothing and gloves.
- Stay at a sufficient distance for your safety from the open flame of a gas burner.
Stages of work execution
- Carry out an accurate calculation of the bending radius of the HDPE workpiece for the pipeline. Please note that bend angles should not exceed 90 degrees to avoid deformation of the pipe during operation.
- Based on the calculation, make a template from a fiberboard slab with the required bending radius and shape.
- Mark the area to be heated.
If a pipe bend of 90 degrees is required, it is recommended to heat a section whose length will be six of its diameters.
- Direct the heat flow from a hair dryer or the flame of a gas burner to the marked place. For ease of operation, you can mount the heating device on a fixed support. When using hot water to heat a product at this stage, lower a section of pipe into a container of liquid.
- Try to smoothly and slowly rotate the workpiece around its axis to evenly heat the bending area. The required heating temperature is from +80 to +120 degrees.
- Place the softened workpiece in a pre-prepared bending template and slowly bend it at the required angle.
- Carefully ensure that the material does not begin to harden; reheat if necessary.
- Leave the bent pipe to cool on the template.
- It is possible to begin assembling the workpiece only after the product has completely cooled.
Possible mistakes
If the technology for bending polyethylene pipes is violated, the result may be damaged material, as well as the inability to use blanks in pipeline installation.
- When bending a pipe without using a bending template, it is impossible to achieve the exact angle of the finished product.
- Bending a pipe that is not sufficiently heated to the required temperature range leads to a high risk of cracks appearing in the material (the minimum temperature at which HDPE becomes plastic is + 80 degrees).
- If the heating exceeds +130 degrees, deformation is possible: this is the temperature at which polyethylene begins to melt.
- If you ignore the uniform rotation of the workpiece around its axis, the wall may break when it is bent (not the entire area required for bending is heated).
- Removing a workpiece from the molding template that has not completely cooled will lead to deformation of the product and a change in the specified bend angle, which will make accurate assembly of the pipeline impossible.
When independently performing work on bending HDPE pipes, take into account the characteristics of the material and the technological features of the process of forming the workpiece, and observe safety precautions. This will help you save your time and money.

How to bend a pipe without a pipe bender: how to bend the profile yourself at home
The home craftsman is well aware of the advantages of rolled metal pipes. From the basics of strength of materials, we know that the moment of resistance of a tubular section is much greater than that of a solid section with the same area. Therefore, pipes have increased values of permissible bending stresses.
But this also presents certain difficulties when trying to bend a product at home: without the appropriate tool, you will most likely end up with a part with a deformed cross-section and unattractive folds. In most cases, renting (and, even more so, purchasing) the necessary equipment is unprofitable.
However, you can bend a pipe without a pipe bender, and in several ways.
Why do metal pipes bend badly?
They bend well, the problem lies in the unsatisfactory appearance of the product, which is accompanied by distortion of the perimeter. The latter circumstance is especially critical for profile pipes of rectangular, square or oval sections.
During plastic bending, different sections of the pipe are under the influence of stresses of opposite signs. The outer sections at the bend are stretched, and the inner sections are compressed. While compressive stresses are safe for most metals, tensile stresses contribute to the formation of cracks and tears.
This is especially true for profiles that are made from materials of medium ductility, for example, medium and high carbon steels, nickel-free stainless steels, some grades of bronze, etc.
It is very difficult to determine the exact grade of metal from which the product is made without the appropriate tools and instruments.
Metal pipes
Bending, as a process of plastic deformation, is generally quite capricious to the conditions under which it is carried out. To achieve a positive result you will need:
- Take into account the phenomenon of springing of the bent profile, in which the final value of the bending angle is always less than the calculated one.
- Ensure precise fixation of the bending area to prevent the workpiece from moving.
- Determine the minimum required value of the radius of curvature of the deforming tool.
Therefore, before starting work, the minimum possible bending arm, the bending method (open or closed), and the sequence of operations are determined. In particular, successful bending is guaranteed to be ensured if the ratio r/s > 5 (here r is the assigned bending radius, s is the wall thickness).
In the future, options for self-bending pipes are considered, which can be implemented at home.
Option one - bend the pipe with heating
In this case, no special devices are required at all; it is enough for the master to have an oxygen-acetylene torch or a regular blowtorch.
In the first case, the mouthpiece should be placed at some distance from the place of the intended bend. The torch should not be made concentrated, since in this case the temperature difference between the zones will be too large, and the plastic characteristics of the material will be uneven (this is especially true for carbon steels containing a high percentage of manganese and silicon ).
Heat bending of pipes
After heating to the required temperature (it is easily calculated by the colors of the tarnish), the bent part must be clamped in a bench vice, and free bending of the desired area must be performed.
Heating using a torch is more uniform, but is associated with the risk of reducing the strength of the workpiece material, especially if it is intended for use in pressure pipelines. It is better to use a blowtorch to avoid unnecessary release. The following sequence of operations is recommended:
- The area to be deformed is clamped in a bench vice, for which special rubber pads are used that do not damage the metal. Clamping the bent part of the tubular workpiece in a vice
- Light a blowtorch, bring it to the required area, and, evenly turning the flame source around the outer diameter of the profile, warm it up. Note that it is impossible to overheat the pipe with the heat emanating from the torch of a blowtorch, but you can smoke it.
- Turn off the blowtorch, move the heated area a distance equal to the permissible bending arm. Next, using a tubular wrench (sometimes even by hand), bend the product, sometimes using a template.
Warming up a tubular workpiece using a blowtorch
Heated bending, for all its simplicity, is characterized by the following limitations:
- Deteriorates the appearance of the material.
- If the heating temperature is insufficient, folds may form along the inner radius of the bend (this defect cannot be corrected).
- The process requires flexible bending as quickly as possible, because... thin-walled pipes cool quickly.
- The technology is not recommended for small bending radii.
- Increased safety requirements must be met since an open flame is involved.
Most often, a pipe made of stainless steel or non-ferrous metals, which are not prone to oxidation when heated, is bent in this way.
Option two - use back pressure
Failures during conventional pipe bending are often associated with the presence of an unbalanced stress-strain state of the workpiece, when the external pressure from the working tool is not balanced by internal back pressure (the resistance of the metal itself in this case is not enough, since it is obviously below the plasticity limit).
Such backpressure can be achieved by injection of gas, liquid, or other incompressible working medium, which is characterized by high complexity. Gas and liquid are excluded, because at home it is very difficult to stablely seal the open ends of a tubular workpiece. But sand or fine slag is always available - they are homogeneous, non-toxic and easy to handle.
Consider the sequence of bending a round tubular profile with the application of back pressure:
Subsequent bending of the heated section
- You must first install a plug on one of the ends of the workpiece, for which you can use a regular bolt (see Fig. 5). The bolt shaft should fit snugly into the inner hole.
- We prepare the filler; it must be homogeneous and fine so as not to create internal voids.
To periodically compact sand/slag, any pin of suitable diameter is used as a piston (see Fig. 6). The entire tubular blank must be completely filled with filler (see Fig. 7).
- The workpiece is placed in a bench vice and bent. Since the tensile strength of sand or slag is always lower than that of the part material, rupture or cracking will not occur.
After bending, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the internal lumen of the pipe from residual filler.
Option three - use of tension springs
To implement the method, a special spring is required, the outer diameter of which should be as close as possible to the inner diameter of the workpiece.
The range of extension springs is given in GOST 18794-80; their characteristic feature is the presence of a ring-shaped grip at one of the ends. This grip can be closed, as shown in Fig. 8, or in the form of a figured hook.
The latter is considered preferable because it makes it more convenient to remove the spring from the workpiece after the bending process is completed.
Installing a plug in one of the ends of the pipe Compacting the backfilled material Pipe filled with filler Appearance of the extension spring Option for the extension spring with a shaped grip
The selected spring is inserted inside and securely fixed at the opposite end of the pipe. Since the outer surface of the spring fits tightly against the wall, it provides the same back pressure as the intermediate medium in the previous version. The advantage of this method is that such bending springs can be used repeatedly.
The last option - why come up with any bending technologies at all?
In some cases - for example, when the r/s ratio is much greater than the minimum recommended value - successful bending of a pipe in a cold state with your own hands is possible only if one of the ends is firmly secured and then bent according to a pre-prepared template.
The template is made of multi-layer plywood; you can even use the outer surface of any durable object of suitable diameter - a barrel of water, or a wooden flowerpot.
One of the ends is secured in a clamp/vice, and the opposite end is bent along the required radius (see Fig. 10). In this way it is quite possible to obtain, for example, blanks for the steel frame of a greenhouse or greenhouse.
After deformation, you should not immediately release the part from the clamps, since any metal has inertial properties.
In all cases of bending without a pipe bender, you should prepare:
- Stock up on levers (the bending moment, depending on the required parameters and pipe material, may be quite large).
- Prepare a template that must be precisely calculated for the characteristics of the bending zone.
- Thoroughly clean the inside surface of the curved pipe (in particular, if the product will be used for pumping liquid media).
Before starting work, it is worth remembering simple safety rules. Before bending by hand, it is advisable to wrap the workpiece with rough leather, burlap or other dense fabric - this will protect your hands and create additional friction, which will prevent slipping during bending.

How to bend a pipe
When renovating a private house or apartment, anyone may be faced with the need to bend a pipe. This is often thought about when installing plumbing, heating or underfloor heating.
Not everyone has a special pipe bender that allows them to bend them to the desired shape without much difficulty. So, we have to invent different methods that can be used at home.
Today we will look at several bending options, depending on the type and material from which they are made.
Bend a metal pipe
This is not easy to do, but it is quite possible. Almost all metal pipes use the same method. For example, when bending copper, in order to avoid breaking and incorrect deformation, it is filled with sand.
Sand helps maintain the shape of the section on the fold. But copper is a fairly soft metal, and there should not be any difficulties when bending a copper tube. What about aluminum or steel profile pipes? There is no way to do this without a gas burner.
On a note! It is not recommended to bend galvanized pipes in this way.
The pipe must be fixed in a vice. It must be preheated at the bend. Readiness for bending can be checked as follows: if the pipe is aluminum, you need to bring a piece of paper to the heated area, it should ignite or smoke.
If the pipe is metal (steel), the signal that it is sufficiently heated will be the color of the heated metal: it will turn bright red.
Sometimes it may be necessary to bend a square tube of small cross-section. Here you will have to use 2 supports that will serve as bases, and a mallet (rubber) - with its help we will bend slowly but surely.
Before starting this procedure, you need to pour sand into it. If it’s winter, you can fill it with water, which, when frozen, will serve as a damper. After filling it with sand (water), we seal it with wooden caps.
What about the profile, what should we do with it?
Yes, just like other species. To ensure an optimally correct shape on the bend, a strong spring must be placed inside the bend, securely tied with wire so that it can be pulled out later.
Bend a metal-plastic pipe
They are used when installing underfloor heating systems. They work in parallel with the heating system, and to effectively use the heat-conducting surface of the pipes they are bent.
You can do this by hand. Clamp it in your fists and bend it carefully, avoiding strong bends. For every 1 - 2 cm, an average of 15 degrees of bending is obtained.
It happens that during repairs it may be necessary to bend a polypropylene pipe. Although the manufacturer does not recommend doing this.
Using cold bending, you can bend this product with a radius equal to 8 pipe diameters. It is better to bend them hot: for this it is heated to 150° Celsius using a hair dryer.

How to bend a pipe at home: instructions for bending products from different materials
When doing heating yourself or carrying out plumbing work, a home craftsman may be faced with the need to bend pipes.
If you don’t have professional tools, but you need to do this, the methods below will help.
Let's figure it out: how to bend a pipe at home from plastics and metals. What is needed for this and what types of pipe benders are there.
How to bend a metal-plastic pipe
This is especially often encountered when installing heated floors at home. Metal-plastic can be easily bent by hand, you just need to take into account the following principles:
- You need to work smoothly, without rushing.
- The bend should be Ø 15 cm or more (or for every two centimeters of the pipe there should be a 15° bend). If you bend it too much, the part will break.
If you cannot make an even bend, you can use a blank (blank) Ø 15 cm. By bending metal-plastic along it, you can achieve identical, smooth turns.
To bend metal-plastic pipes, you can purchase a special spring that will prevent the product from cracking. They are external and internal. The spring is put on the place of deformation, then the segment is bent manually. To remove the spring, you need to unscrew it clockwise.
Another way to prevent the pipe from being flattened is to insert many long pieces of thin wire into it.
Bending polypropylene pipes at home
Polypropylene (reinforced or not) is connected using a special soldering iron, and fittings are used for all kinds of turns and structural elements. They are produced in a variety of shapes and directions, even when you need to smoothly go around some object, there are special “edges”, so most often when installing PP water pipes you can do without bending.
If, at your own peril and risk, you decide to bend the PP:
- Fix the bend and press very slowly on the ends. The radius of the “cold” bend should not exceed eight Ø of the pipe itself.
- When a larger angle is needed, a special spring is placed inside, then the segment must be heated with a hair dryer to 150°C and then bent smoothly. When the pipe has cooled, you need to carefully check the deformed area - there should be no cracks or dents.
When polypropylene is heated, it becomes very pliable and elastic. Bend it is half the battle; you also need to fix the segment in this position until it cools completely. After the material becomes solid again, the spring is removed from it.
Bend a metal pipe at home
[sticky-ad id=13532]
The main thing to strive for when bending a metal pipe is not to flatten it or break it. When a pipe is bent, it can change in diameter, which will negatively affect any pipeline system.
For any metal pipes, you must first perform a proven procedure:
- The section is filled to capacity with fine sand.
- The ends of the pipe need to be plugged; for this purpose, 2 wooden choppers are made (you need to be careful not to drive the choppers too deep, otherwise it will be difficult to pull them out later and you will have to burn out the plugs).
- Now the pipe can be bent without fear of it becoming deformed.
In winter, you can use ordinary water rather than sand. The cap is driven in, the pipe is filled with water, and time passes until the water freezes into ice. The bending is carried out, and only then the pipe is defrosted and the water is drained.
Steel and aluminum products
After pouring sand, one end of the pipe is fixed, and the place of the planned bend is evenly heated.
For these purposes you can use:
- gas welding;
- blowtorch;
- propane torch.
How to know if the pipe is hot enough:
- Steel: will turn deep red.
- Aluminum: bring paper to the heating area. If it smokes or catches fire, the desired t has been achieved.
You need to bend the pipe slowly. You can only work with gloves!
Notch method
With the hot method, a protruding fold appears at the bend. There is another method - more labor-intensive, but sometimes justified. This is the cut method.
Several cuts are made up to half of the pipe.
The distance between cuts will depend on the Ø of the pipe and how much bending is required.
- For small diameters, the thickness of the cut will be sufficient to obtain a smooth bend (the more cuts, the more accurate the bend will be).
- For pipes with a large diameter, you can cut several small wedges.
This method is mainly used in decorative structures.
In order to bend the pipe through which the liquid will move in this way, you need to carefully weld all the cuts, and clean and polish the weld seam with a grinder. After painting, the product takes on a decorative appearance without traces of deformation.
After bending by cutting, the inner surface of the pipe remains rough, with sharp protrusions, which means that debris will be retained in this place, rust will settle, etc. This is a clear disadvantage for heating and plumbing!
How to bend a stainless and galvanized pipe at home
It must be said right away that stainless steel, and especially galvanized steel, cannot be heated. These materials are deformed only in a cold way.
As with other metal pipes, an internal stop is used - i.e. Sand is poured in and plugs are installed.
After which it is better to use a crossbow-type pipe bender.
If it is not there, part of the product is clamped in a vice, and pressure is applied to the other part. The downside of this method is that it can be difficult to get the pipe to bend in the right place and be exactly the shape you need.
At home, you can bend stainless steel with a diameter of up to 4 cm and a wall thickness of up to 3 mm. If these indicators are higher, professional equipment should be used.
How to bend a profile pipe at home
Let's figure out how to bend a square pipe at home. Pipes with a rectangular cross-section can be given the desired shape by cutting.
Using a grinder, several cuts are made to the opposite side of the product, then bending occurs (for this, one end is fixed), and then the cuts are welded.
Hot method. Insert a bundle of thin wire one at a time inside. After that, secure the ends of the pipe and heat the desired area with a blowtorch or other method. Now you can work with the product.
But the specificity of a square section is that it resists to the last, and then sharply bends at an acute angle in one place. It is extremely difficult to obtain a smooth bend. Therefore, it is necessary to make a special template (blank) and bend it according to it.
When bending profile products, only the outer side needs to be heated so that it stretches. Otherwise, folds will form on the inside, which will greatly narrow the lumen. For the same reasons, a segment-type pipe bender is used.
Types of pipe benders
There are special devices - pipe benders, which exist so that you don’t have to work “on your knees”. And if the amount of work is not small, you should think about purchasing this tool.
They differ in the way they bend:
- Spring - used for metal-plastic products.
- Segment - a segment blank is used, which pulls the tube around itself.
- Crossbow - The product is placed in a special mold and pressed in the middle of the segment.
- Drone - for thin-walled pipes of small Ø.
- Roll benders are another option designed to work with products of square and rectangular cross-section.
When using a pipe bender, do not forget to lubricate the area of expected deformation with machine oil.
Depending on the force from which the tool operates, it can be:
- Manual.
- Hydraulic.
- Electric.
The last two options are used in production. For home needs, manual pipe benders are purchased.
So, you can make an angle, turn or give other shapes to pipes at home. You just need to remember to protect the bend area with limiters.

How to properly bend metal pipes at right angles
Bending metal pipes for cable ducts is a common operation that is often performed when upgrading old or deploying new cable lines. Typically you need to bend pipes at right angles to change the direction of a line, go around a corner or other obstacle. What is the easiest way to perform bending, and what tools are best suited for this task?
Three ways to bend
There are three ways to bend:
- smooth bending under a large radius;
- small radius bend;
- two 45 degree folds.
The method is chosen depending on the task, the type of conductor that will be passed through the channel, and also based on the availability of appropriate tools. For example, to avoid loss of fiber optic cables, it is necessary to turn as smoothly as possible. Electrical cable connections in tight spaces may require a right angle to ensure cable entry to distribution equipment.
Methods for bending pipes at an angle of 90 degrees
When bending 90 degrees, it is especially important to take into account the material of manufacture, the outer and inner diameter of the pipe in order to maintain a sufficient diameter of the channel for pulling the cable. The minimum bending radius can be found in the corresponding tables.
Where to start bending metal pipes
A simple bend of a pipe at a right angle looks like an elementary task, but when solving it, it is important to take into account several points and carry out calculations.
First of all, you should calculate how much “shorter” the pipe will become, that is, find out the length of the bending section. This is important for determining the bending point if the end of the pipe needs to be bent. An error may result in cable channels not being connected. Changes in the bending point depend on the method of bending, for example, ½ pipe becomes “shorter” by 5 inches, ¾ pipe becomes “shorter” by 6 inches, and inch pipe becomes “shorter” by 8 inches.
Typically, the amount of “reduction” in length is indicated on tube bending devices if they are branded. This is clearly seen in the example of the Greenlee SITE-RITE manual pipe bender.
Greenlee SITE-RITE manual pipe bender and example of calculating the length of the bending section
Using these numbers is very simple: if the ½ pipe is 56 inches long, you need to measure the 5 inches indicated on the pipe bender and the bend point will be at the 51 inch mark.
Today, it is not necessary to keep all the necessary calculations in your head. They can be done using mobile applications that allow you to calculate any bending methods for inch and metric metal pipes.
Example of a mobile application for calculating pipe bending parameters
Typically, such applications are provided with illustrations and signal to the user that the selected options are invalid. This way you can easily select the desired method of bending metal pipes. Such applications are especially useful in cases where it is necessary to bend the pipe at large angles, including 90 degrees.
After making calculations and markings, you can begin bending the metal pipe using a pipe bender. There are important points to consider in this matter.
Bending pipes with a pipe bender
For small volumes of work, manual pipe benders are often used. They are very easy to use but require some experience.
So, you just need to place the Greenlee SITE-RITE pipe bender on the floor and start pressing on the shoe with your foot, while slowly moving the handle down. The pipe will gradually begin to bend.
But it should be taken into account that most of the pressure should come not from the hands, but from the leg, which presses on the bending block of the pipe bender. If there is excessive force on the handle, the pipe may “fold” and close the cable channel.
It is also advisable to check the bend angle as you approach the right angle to ensure that the radius is correct and does not go beyond the 90 degree mark. A slight excess of the radius is acceptable, since the heavy block puts pressure on the pipe, further bending it. After the block is removed, the pipe will “play” back, but you should not hope that this will help correct the extra few degrees of bend.
Bending a metal pipe using a manual pipe bender
The most difficult thing is to bend the pipe in different directions. It is necessary to take accurate measurements and check several times whether the pipe does not rotate in the pipe bender and whether it bends in the right direction.
The same calculation rules apply here as for a single 90-degree bend. However, it should be taken into account that many bends in one cable channel greatly complicate cable pulling. Therefore, in such cases, smooth bends or double bends of 45 degrees are used.
In the latter case, you can get around corners and obstacles, as was demonstrated in the first illustration - “methods of bending pipes at an angle of 90 degrees.” To calculate the bending parameters, it is necessary to measure the distance to the corner, but it must be taken into account that the pipe has a diameter and a few extra centimeters are needed so that the bend does not touch an obstacle, for example, a load-bearing column in the corner.
Large volumes of work require powerful pipe benders
Bending a large number of metal cable ducts at an angle of 90 degrees requires more powerful and sophisticated devices than manual pipe benders. This is due to the need to accurately maintain the bending angle on a large number of pipes. Manual work in this case is very labor-intensive, and laying cable channels will take a lot of time.
Therefore, in such cases, more advanced devices are used. In particular, the Greenlee 880 pipe bender uses a hydraulic drive with a force of 15 tons. It can be equipped with a large range of bending shoes for all common pipe diameters.
In most cases, a high-quality pipe bender and modern tools for calculating bending parameters ensure quick installation of metal cable ducts.

How to bend a pipe at a right angle
Metal acts as a fairly strong material, but under special pressure it can be bent. Today there are several ways to solve this issue. The first technology is the use of pegs. But you must remember that this method may damage the pipe or even break it. This can be avoided by filling the internal cavity with dry sand. Plugs should be installed at both ends.
At the next stage, you can begin bending. To do this, pegs are dug into the ground. You will use them as leverage. If you are not confident in your abilities, then first you should practice on unnecessary sections of pipes.
If you are faced with the question of how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender, then using this technology you can change the shape of the product, the diameter of which varies from 16 to 20 mm. For pipes of larger diameter, this technique is not suitable, as the process will be quite complicated.
It is also important to take into account the material that underlies it. For example, for galvanizing it is recommended to use other methods.
Before bending a pipe without a pipe bender, you should think about which technology is best suited for this. Perhaps heating would be a great solution. This method is usually used for steel and aluminum piping.
For the procedure, the product is fixed in a vice, but first it should be filled and heated with a gas burner in the place that you plan to bend. The temperature is determined quite simply: when a piece of paper approaches the pipe, it should begin to smoke.
When a steel billet is used, it should turn red when heated. For safety, the technician should wear gloves.
Plane-parallel plate
If you are faced with the task of how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender, you can use a plane-parallel plate. This technique involves fixing the product in a clamp. After this, you can bend it, and this must be done along the plate.
This technique is considered not only economical, but also simple. In order to achieve a positive result, several plates should be used, each of which has a different curvature. The main condition is the use of steel pipe.
The length of the product should be quite impressive.
Using a metal spring
Quite often, home craftsmen think about the question of how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender at home. You can use a metal spring for this. This technique is excellent for pipes made of non-ferrous metals, which have good ductility.
A spring is used to prevent deformation. To get a good result, you should take into account the size of the spring, which must correspond to the internal diameter of the metal structure. This requirement is due to the fact that the pipe must be inserted into the cavity. After this, you can bend it by tying the spring with a wire to simplify the process of further removal.
Master's advice
If you need to bend a profile pipe without a pipe bender, water can be used as a filler instead of sand. The pipe cavity is filled, after which the product is sealed on both sides with plugs. The water should be frozen and then the material should be heated. However, this method cannot be used for galvanized workpieces.
Profile pipe and its modification
This type of metal structure is quite popular when constructing greenhouses and gazebos on a personal plot. The main feature of the building material is that it can be damaged when bent. A way out of this situation may be to fill the internal cavity with fine sand or water. These actions eliminate the possibility of pipe damage and achieve excellent results. This technique is suitable for brass and duralumin pipelines.
If you are thinking about the question of how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender for a canopy, then you can use a rubber mallet for this. It is used for square profile products. The pipeline is installed on reliable supports, and then a mallet is used. Actions must be careful and smooth to eliminate the possibility of damage. If it is necessary to achieve a large angle, then to facilitate the process it is necessary to heat the pipe in the place where it is to be bent.
Methods for bending metal-plastic
Quite often, country property owners wonder how to bend a pipe themselves without a pipe bender. When metal-plastic is available, you can use your own strength without using improvised means. The product is clamped and bends smoothly. In this case, it is important to eliminate the possibility of an inflection. It is important to follow the rules that state that for every 2 cm of the workpiece, the bending angle can be 15°.
If you are faced with the question of how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender for a greenhouse, then you can use pieces of wire that fill the internal cavity. This allows you to achieve an even and smooth bend in the shortest possible time.
Dry fine sand can be used as filler. It is poured inside, and the edges are closed with plugs. Then one end of the product must be fixed, ensuring the reliability and strength of the fastening. Use a gas torch or blowtorch to heat the bend area.
The material is checked for readiness with a piece of paper.
Methods for bending polypropylene pipe
If it is necessary to change the bending direction of a polypropylene pipe, you can use one of two possible methods. The first involves heating the bend area. A hair dryer is usually used for this. The optimal heating temperature is 150 °C. Hands should be protected with gloves that are resistant to high temperatures.
At the final stage, the product is bent to the required shape. The thickened wall should be located on the outside of the bend. Once the material has cooled, it will need to be checked for cracks and dents. Another way to bend such a pipe is cold. However, the bending radius should not be more than 8 diameters, otherwise the product may break.
In order to bend a PVC pipe, you need to buy fiberboards. From these you can build a frame that will be needed to give the structure a certain shape. As soon as you give the slab the desired shape, you should sand it; it is better to use fine sandpaper for this.
The next step is to form a silicone shell for the plastic blank. It will act as a fastener for the PVC structure in the frame. In addition, it will play a protective role against chips, mechanical damage and scratches.
The object is placed in a prepared protective shell, and then the bending area is heated. The plastic softens and sits on the frame. Such actions will allow you to obtain the desired shape of the plastic blank. The product is left until it cools down. 15 minutes will be enough for this.
Afterwards, the PVC pipe can be removed from the frame, leaving it until it cools completely.
Expert recommendations
If you are faced with the question of how to bend an aluminum pipe without a pipe bender, then to carry out the work you can use a grinder, with which you need to make several thin cuts at the site of the intended bend. The product is pre-clamped in a vice. As soon as the cuts are made, they should be cleared of chips, only then can you begin to bend the pipe.
Sometimes the product needs to be bent into a circle. As soon as the ring is closed, the holes are welded, and some craftsmen even use a soldering iron for this. In order to make the bend area neat, it is additionally sanded and coated with a protective agent. This eliminates corrosion and premature failure of the connection.
Conclusion
It doesn't matter what material is at the base of the pipe. The ideal bend is quite difficult to achieve. But if you first familiarize yourself with the theory, then you can bend a pipe even without a pipe bender.

How to bend a metal pipe at home
If you independently carry out work on laying water supply networks at home, you may be faced with the need to bend a pipe. Since you may not have professional equipment in the form of a pipe bender, this is quite difficult to do. However, there are special methods that, without the help of professional equipment, will allow you to bend pipes from different materials. In our article we will describe several ways to bend a pipe at home.
Professional equipment
Let's start with what special tools you can use to bend pipes made of different materials. Typically, professional craftsmen have such equipment and it belongs to the category of pipe benders. According to the bending method, all pipe benders can be divided into several categories:
- Crossbow products have a certain shape, so they are used for bending pipes with a suitable diameter.
- Spring tools are suitable for bending plastic pipes yourself. The equipment is made on the basis of a steel spring.
- Segmented structures have a special area around which the workpiece can be pulled.
- Mandrel tools are designed for bending elements with thin walls, as well as in cases where it is necessary to obtain a small bending radius.
Based on the type of drive, such equipment is divided into the following types:
- The hand tool is suitable for bending small-diameter workpieces made of thin-walled polymer materials, stainless steel and various non-ferrous alloys.
- Industrial hydraulic equipment is used to bend three-inch pipes.
- The electromechanical tool is suitable for pipelines of different diameters. Its main difference is that you can easily achieve high bending accuracy (angle, radius).
Important: for bending workpieces at home, a manual pipe bender will be sufficient. It is suitable for bending pipes made of aluminum, brass, stainless steel and thin-walled copper with or without plastic coating. The main condition is that the diameter of the pipes should not exceed 2.5 cm.
Self-bending metal pipe
If you do not have special equipment, then to bend a metal pipe at home, you can use one of the following methods:
- Typically, during the bending process, pipes may break or decrease in diameter. To prevent this from happening, the product must be filled with dry, sifted sand. To prevent sand from spilling out, we install plugs at the ends of the workpiece. The easiest way to do this is to prepare wooden choppers and drive them in, but in such a way that you can then easily pull them out without deforming the pipe. Now the workpiece can be bent without fear that it will break and decrease in cross-section. Moreover, if the pipe is made of soft metal, then the procedure can be easily carried out without the use of auxiliary tools. For denser material, you can use an additional pipe of the required diameter, which will be securely fixed to the ground or other equipment. In this case, we bend the workpiece using the principle of leverage.
Tip: in the cold season, you can use ordinary water instead of sand. Pour it into the pipe and wait until the water freezes. After this, we perform bending, let the ice in the workpiece melt on its own, or heat the product.
- If you need to bend an aluminum or steel workpiece, the procedure is done using a blowtorch or gas torch. To begin with, you need to pour sifted fine sand into a piece of the product and plug the ends. Then we fix the element in a vice. After this, the area that needs to be bent is heated using a burner. It is worth heating until this place acquires a bright red tint. You can check that the aluminum pipe is sufficiently heated using a piece of paper. If you bring it to a heated pipe, the paper should catch fire or begin to smoke. After this, we put gloves on our hands to protect ourselves from burns, and gradually bend the pipe.
Attention: it is better not to heat painted or galvanized elements before bending. Otherwise, you may damage their protective coating.
- If you need to bend a square pipe (small in size), then the procedure can be performed without heating. However, you will still have to add sand or add water in winter. To bend you will need a rubber mallet. Next, we lay the pipe on two supports and bend the workpiece with blows of a mallet in the central part. If the bend is too large, the element in this place heats up and straightens a little. However, with this method, the shape of the profile product may be slightly distorted. If it is very important for you to maintain the correct cross-section of the profile pipe, then you need to find a strong spring of a suitable diameter (according to the size of the internal section of the element). We place the spring inside the workpiece in the area of the bend, tying it with wire so that it can be removed later. Now you can safely bend a section of pipeline without fear of cross-section deformation.
- The feasibility of using the method with a welding unit and an angle grinder is questionable, but we will describe it too. To do this, shallow cuts are made in the bend area using an angle grinder. This reduces the strength of the product, after which it is easy to bend it by hand. The cuts are then sealed by welding.
We bend metal-plastic elements
If you don’t know how to bend a metal-plastic pipe at home, you can use one of the following methods:
- The easiest way to perform this procedure is to simply bend the element with your hands, because metal-plastic is not as strong as steel. In this case, you should try to ensure that the bending configuration is 15° for every 2 cm of length. This method is suitable for bending workpieces that will be used when installing heated floor systems.
- If you have small pieces of wire, then they need to be compacted tightly into the pipe. After this, you can perform bending. As a result, you will get smoother curves than in the first method.
- If you need to perform a smooth bend of high precision, but you do not have a pipe bender, then you can use this method. To do this, we plug one end of the workpiece with a chopper or other material. Pour fine sifted sand into the pipe so that it reaches the top edge. After this, we plug the second end of the workpiece. We fix the pipe in a vice and use a blowtorch to heat the area where bending needs to be done. It is important not to overdo it, causing the plastic coating of the pipe to melt. The fact that you have heated the area sufficiently can be judged by a piece of paper. If you bring it to this place, it should begin to smolder. After this, we put on protective gloves to avoid burns and bend the pipe. Then we remove the choppers and pour out the sand.
Working with polypropylene blanks
Typically, manufacturers of polypropylene pipes do not recommend bending them at home, but if you are careful, you can do this using one of two methods:
- In the first case, we need to heat the workpiece area using a hair dryer to a temperature of approximately 150°C. After this, wearing gloves, safely bend the pipe and fix it in this position until it cools completely. For a much better result, you can fill the product with sand. In this case, it is important to adhere to one rule: the thickened part of the element must be located on the outside of the bend. After the workpiece has cooled, carefully inspect the bend area; there should be no cracks or dents there. Otherwise the element cannot be used.
- Without heating, this type of pipe can only be bent using construction corner couplings and soldering.
Bending plastic blanks
To bend a plastic pipeline, you need to do the following:
- We cut out a template in the fiberboard that will help give the plastic pipe the desired configuration. The template should be carefully sanded with sandpaper so that there are no nicks or irregularities.
- Next, a frame for the plastic blank is made from silicone on a molding machine. It will allow you to secure a piece of pipeline in the template and protect it from scratches, chips and dents.
- We place the plastic element in the prepared silicone shell.
- The part is then fixed in a frame and placed in a molding machine.
- As the workpiece heats up, the plastic will soften and settle into the frame. As a result, the workpiece will acquire the desired configuration.
- After this, you should wait a quarter of an hour until the plastic hardens a little, remove the pipe from the frame and let it cool completely.

How to bend a pipe: best methods
Many garden jobs require specific skills. For example, we need to make an arch for grapes, which would have a sloping, spherical shape. Naturally, for this, the working material must be brought into the appropriate form. We take a regular or profile pipe with the hope that it will easily succumb to our efforts.
But everything goes a little differently than we expected, and even if there is a bend, it is crooked, uneven, and moves several centimeters away from the given place. Very rarely, in approximately only 10% of cases, it is possible to successfully bend a product with your own hands without special tools. But this result is not very suitable for us for obvious reasons. That's why the DachaDecor website.
ru decided to present modern and classical methods that will help bend a metal tube quickly and strictly in the right place.
Where in the countryside can a bent pipe come in handy?
You should not think that this material does not concern you in any way, since you are not going to build something round or similar in shape.
A bent pipe is necessary in many cases:
- For the construction of arches, gazebos and canopies;
- When constructing fences, fences and more serious barriers;
- In landscape design, for the arrangement and construction of small architectural forms;
- In the case of working with engineering systems on the site, with the same sewerage or water supply;
- For the production of country furniture, light and small frames, etc.
One of the times when you need to bend a metal tube is if you want to leave the material intact. For example, when working with the assembly of frames, you can always cut the source into two parts and connect them at the desired angle by welding or bolts and nuts.
But you can leave the material intact, and then you will definitely need to bend it.
So, there are several ways that will help you bend a pipe efficiently and according to a clear mark.
How to bend a metal pipe
To produce such deformation, simple machines - pipe benders - are often used in the country:
- Manual pipe benders. Such machines are used for bending small diameters and most often for non-ferrous metals. The process itself is quite simple - you need to install the tube in the machine, fix it, and then, using a special lever, make a bend. You can change the diameter by moving the product through the machine and making additional folds in succession, if, of course, your machine allows it;
- Hydraulic pipe benders work on much the same principle, but you don't need to use a lot of physical force. The main action is carried out by hydraulic cylinders;
- Electromechanical pipe benders are even more serious and, naturally, expensive equipment. They are distinguished by multitasking and precision in work.
It is also necessary to consider the types of pipe benders depending on the bending requirements and pipe materials:
- Mandrel pipe bender - for products with a thin wall and small diameter;
- Spring - for manual bending using a spring (for small cross-section tubes);
- Crossbow - a machine with a ready-made bending shape;
- A segment pipe bender is a machine that works by drawing a pipe around a special segment.
You can bend a metal product on a plane-parallel plate. So, by placing the workpiece in the clamps, a force is applied, thanks to which the pipe takes the shape of a plate. It's quite simple, and the fold turns out to be of high quality. But when working with a plate, you will receive products of strictly the same shape, with an identical bend. This is the whole low practicality of the method, since to obtain other forms you will need to have several plates at your dacha.
There is a method that uses a metal spring. But it works with non-ferrous metals, which are soft.
The object of work is installed inside the spring, clamped with one edge in a vice and bent to the desired diameter. This way, compression and tension forces are transferred from the walls of the pipe to the spring, and the chance that the colored thin-walled material will burst is seriously reduced.
How to bend a pipe using sand
There is also an old-fashioned method that uses sand. The good thing about it is that you don’t need a special machine or other expensive equipment to bend metal.
Sand is poured inside the pipe so that it completely occupies the entire internal space. Next, the edges of the product must be plugged so that the sand does not spill out. The next step is to heat the metal at the site of the future bend, which can be done with a torch. The last stage is fixation and force, due to which the required shape will be obtained. After work, the sand is poured out of the tube.
It is very important not to bend galvanized and painted products using heat, because at the bend site the protective or decorative layer may be damaged.
Is it possible to bend a profile pipe
It is clear that due to its shape, a square or profile pipe has increased rigidity. Therefore, you should apply serious skills here, but do not forget that there is expert advice for such matters.
So, sand is poured into the pipe. It is advisable to be thicker if you want to preserve the normal shape of the product on the fold as much as possible. It's easy to do! First, one edge is closed with a wooden peg, then sand is poured inside, and the second edge is also closed. The tube is placed in a vice and straightened with a mallet until it obtains the desired shape.
You can heat the metal at the bend, and even use a pipe bender designed for a profile pipe, but any assessment of the possibilities and subsequent actions takes place directly on the spot.
We use a grinder and welding
To be honest, this is a very controversial method: using it wastes a lot of effort since you are doing double work. Moreover, if it is necessary to bend a lot of pipes, then money is spent, because electricity today is very expensive, and a lot of it is needed to operate an angle grinder and a welding machine.
The method is that several cuts are made at the bend of the pipe, due to which it loses its strength. Next, even by hand, the product is bent, and the cuts are sealed by welding. Of course, the method is applicable depending on the need for the radius and the initial parameters of the work object, but if possible, it is better to use other, simpler and faster methods.
Bend polypropylene
At the dacha, a telephone pipe will also come in handy. It is suitable for plumbing work not only in city apartments, but also in any residential building. Bringing water to a new kitchen in a country house, to an outdoor shower, to a car wash - all this can be done with polypropylene.
It often has to be bent, although experienced plumbers use corner couplings for this.
They are available for sale in a large assortment, at almost any required degree, so we advise you to give the structure the desired shape by soldering and corners. But if you want to bend a pipe without extra costs, use the following method.
This method is very simple - heating with a hairdryer. You need to work without sudden movements and only with gradual heating and bending. Strong bends, which could simply change the internal cross-section, should not be allowed. This will affect the pressure in the pipe, which is not what we want.
The heated tube is bent and fixed in the required position until it cools, and then used for its intended purpose. You can also use sand here, but it is much better to take the special components for the job that we talked about earlier.
You can bend a pipe with or without a special tool, but it all depends on the requirements for the type of finished product and its quality. Therefore, we recommend doing everything according to the rules, as well as using proven modern methods, because even in the countryside you need products that are reliable, practical and aesthetically attractive.
