How to check gold in a pawnshop
Gold is a soft precious metal and for this reason it is combined with various additives to create jewelry. The quantitative content of other additives is determined by the sample. For example, a 925 alloy contains 92.5% of gold itself, and the rest is alloy and all kinds of impurities.
In the Russian Federation, the circulation of gold, platinum and silver is strictly controlled by the relevant authorities, but this still does not provide 100% protection against counterfeiting. Fraudsters quite often overestimate the content of pure gold in the alloy or, in general, replace the precious metal with cheap analogues that only superficially resemble gold.
Reliable pawnshop: checking gold
There are many methods for testing gold - they all differ in degree of complexity, accuracy and price. There are metals that have physical properties similar to gold. One example is pyrite. This is a mineral with a characteristic metallic luster and golden color, and is essentially an alloy of sulfur and iron. Ordinary gold-plated copper also often acts as a substitute for gold.
In any serious pawnshop, the appraiser has professional tools and materials, including:
- magnifying glass;
- laboratory scales with an accuracy class of at least 3 or 4;
- calipers;
- calico;
- assay chemicals.
There are a large number of different chemical reagents. The rule is this: from 375 to 750 samples, acidic samples are used; up to the 600th standard, so-called chlorine gold is used; and potassium iodide is used to test alloys above the 800 standard.
How do they check gold in a pawnshop?
A step-by-step study of products is as follows:
- superficial inspection;
- cleaning with a tool;
- applying one of the types of reagent;
- final determination of the sample.
1. Inspection using a magnifying glass and other available means . The specialist, first of all, pays attention to the imprint and stamps. A counterfeit is easily determined by the naked eye - curvature in symbols and numbers. Also, upon visual inspection, it is not difficult to identify jewelry and gilding. In addition, it is possible to determine whether a metal belongs to the group of high-grade, medium-grade and low-grade alloys.
2. Surface cleaning . The surface can be smeared with dirt and dust, painted, bleached, treated with chemical compounds, so there is a need to clean a separate area of the product. The cleaning procedure is carried out exclusively with the client’s permission. The following tools are used for this:
- all kinds of scrapers;
- finely cut files;
- files.
Stripping is carried out as carefully as possible, and, most importantly, in a remote place from the mark. If we are talking about a ring, bracelet, earring, then cleaning is done only from the inside.
3. Application of reagents . An assay chemical is applied to the cleaned area. The drop is placed on the product carefully to prevent leakage in different directions. The presence of the chemical on the metal must be strictly controlled, otherwise inaccurate research results may be obtained. Finally, the drop is carefully soaked with calico or a napkin.
There are many different chemical reagents. And the duration of each person’s stay on the gold surface is strictly regulated:
- gold chloride – no more than twelve seconds;
- acid chemical reagent for the 375-585th and 750th samples - ten and twenty seconds, respectively;
- potassium iodide – from eight to twelve seconds.
4. Sample . The surface of the material is carefully checked with reagents, sometimes several at once, and is confirmed by the tabular instructions.
Samples are tested according to the following scheme:
- gold and other alloys with a precious metal content of up to 60% are treated with gold chloride, and after the corresponding standard with a reagent;
- 750 gold is tested with a standard reagent, but to detect handicraft fakes, you can limit yourself to gold chloride;
- alloys with gold from 80% are tested with a solution of potassium iodide.
Description of samples and their reactions to chemical compounds:
- 375th sample - a greenish or brownish stain from chlorine is obtained, and the drop itself is completely transparent;
- 500th - the chlorine stain turns brown, and the very drop is transparent and clean;
- 585th - a golden or yellowish stain from chlorine, and a light brown stain from a standard chemical reagent;
- 750th – the stain is often absent or barely noticeable;
- The 750th sample of the so-called “white gold” is a bright brown spot;
- 800th - potassium iodide produces a dark, rich red stain;
- 900 and higher samples - a light red spot is obtained from a solution of potassium iodide.
How do they check gold in a pawnshop using a device?
Today, there are special instruments with which it is possible to identify precious metals. Non-destructive express testing is based on measuring the electrochemical potential of the material.
Electronic testers are the most common devices. They use drops of liquid to scan an existing sample and determine its purity. In laboratory conditions, the X-ray method has become widespread. In this way, not only the precious metal content is determined, but the full composition of the alloy is also decomposed.
Alternative to advanced tests:
- magnet – if metal is attracted to a magnet, then you are dealing with a fake
- vinegar – if the product tarnishes in vinegar, it is not real gold;
- glass - gold can be rubbed across the glass, no traces should remain, since gold is much softer;
- porcelain - if the gold strip remains yellow, then it is most likely gold;
- iodine - gold reacts with iodine, namely, a darkened stain remains at the site where ordinary iodine was applied.

What types of gold are there: 999, 750, 585, 375 and others
Gold is a metal that is perfectly susceptible to all kinds of mechanical damage and corrosion. To preserve the original appearance of the precious metal, other impurities are constantly added to it, in the vast majority of cases metals that are more resistant to damage.
Ligatures are metals used to give gold greater strength. Most often, silver or copper is used as a ligature. Pure gold (without any impurities) is highly susceptible to deformation, very much like simple plasticine.
Existing gold samples in the world
Gold hallmarks are special marks imposed by regulatory government agencies around the world to guarantee the presence of gold in jewelry or other types of products.
In strict accordance with the current legislative framework, regulatory government agencies strictly monitor not only jewelry stores, but also all other institutions that are to some extent related to the sale of precious metal. Therefore, before asking a pawnshop for the price of one gram of gold, you should make sure whether the institution has all the necessary licenses and certificates.
Today, there are four existing sample systems, but the most popular are: metric, carat, spool and lot samples.
Spool sampling system
Until 1927 in Russia, and after that in the USSR, a spool system was used to designate the sample of precious metal. The key difference between such a standard and the karat system was the designation of pure precious metal through the number 96. All other gold products containing an admixture of other metals were designated by other, lower numbers.
Try | Spool system | British gold carats | pure gold (%) |
333 | 32 | 8K | 33.33 |
375 | 36 | 9K | 37.50 |
417 | 40 | 10K | 41.67 |
500 | 48 | 12K | 50.00 |
585 | 56 | 14K | 58.33 |
625 | 60 | 15K | 62.50 |
750 | 72 | 18K | 75.00 |
792 | 76 | 19K | 79.17 |
800 | 76.8 | 19.2K | 80.00 |
833 | 81 | 20K | 83.33 |
875 | 84 | 21K | 87.50 |
917 | 88 | 22K | 91.67 |
958 | 92 | 23K | 95.80 |
990 (and above) | 96 | 24K | 99(and higher) |
Carat sample system
Based on the British carat system, one carat (K) is equal to twenty-fourths of the alloy. A similar sampling system is common in Switzerland, the United States of America, Canada and Western European countries.
In Ireland, two standard systems are used equally: carat and metric. The noble metal of twenty-four carats (24K) is considered the purest. It is completely free of any other impurities.
Next comes 14-karat gold, which contains fourteen parts of the precious metal and ten parts of other metals.
Lot system of gold samples
A similar system existed in Germany until 1888 (before the use of the metric system). This type of gold hallmark is based on marks circulating in the Middle Ages among the Celtic, Scandinavian and Germanic populations of Britain. One stamp contained sixteen lots.
To convert a lot sample into a multiple, the lot system values must be divided by two and then multiplied by three. In case of conversion to the metric system, the value of the lot sample must be divided by sixteen, and then multiplied by 1000.
Gold samples according to the metric system
In Russia it is now customary to use the metric system of samples. This system is characterized by ease of use. In other words, the metric system shows how many grams of noble metal are in one kilogram of the total alloy. For example, if one kilogram of alloy contains 415 grams of ligature and 585 grams of pure precious metal, then according to the metric system, this jewelry will have a 585 standard.
Russian jewelers in the vast majority of cases use the following samples:
- 958;
- 900;
- 916;
- 585;
- 750;
- 500;
- 375.
Previously, the 583 standard of the precious metal was widely distributed, which, according to the metric system, corresponded to 14K. Then a proposal was adopted to slightly change the gold standard (due to the difference in the price of gold) from 583 to 585 samples, so that Russian gold jewelry would not be at all inferior in value (per gram) to Western samples.
Which sample should I buy?
Everyone in their life has visited a jewelry store at least once and bought gold jewelry. If it was not a purchase for yourself, then it was a gift to loved ones, relatives and friends. In order not to panic and get confused in jewelry stores, you need to imagine in advance: the cost of the desired product, its sample, shade and appearance.
Having clear ideas in this regard, the seller will not be able to be taken by surprise with the question “ten carat gold, what is the hallmark?”, if the store uses not the metric, but the carat standard system. You can always remember that ten carats equals 375 fineness.
You should never chase after more expensive gold jewelry, or dream of owning the noble metal with the highest purity (999).
It is not for nothing that for more than a decade, people have given their preference to 585 standard, which has proven itself in matters of strength and long-term use.
Products with 999 fineness, although they have the highest level of gold content, are characterized by a high degree of deformation and can become soft. Such products are short-lived and are not suitable for constant use.
Legislative regulation: conclusion
In the Russian Federation, the content of precious metal in jewelry or another type of alloy is controlled by state regulatory services, guided by the decree of the Russian Government of June 18, 1999 - “On the procedure for testing and marking products made of precious metals.”
If gold was mined on the territory of the Russian Federation or intended for import, then it must have a Russian hallmark and a state hallmark. Specialists from the Federal Assay Center monitor the compliance of the gold composition indicated in the sample, as well as its actual presence.
Responsible for quality control of precious metals in the Russian Federation is the Assay Office, which is an integral part of the Ministry of Finance. The brand has its own distinctive designations. The Russian stamp depicts a woman wearing a kokoshnik.
In addition to the state stamp, jewelry made from precious metals can be marked with a name tag. This is a factory mark that confirms the presence of the name of the manufacturer. The name plate also indicates information such as the year the alloy was created and the first letter of the state inspection code.

Difficult times and crisis conditions push people to new methods of deception and enrichment. Because of this, a person may purchase a product that contains an insignificant amount of precious material. Such sellers have even learned to deceive inspection services. Usually, for verification, it is enough to provide not the whole jewelry, but some part of it - a clasp or lock, which is made of pure substance.
Also, another feature is that the determination of the gold standard occurs only on the surface layers of the object. Nobody even knows about a complete check of the structure of the product. This is how jewelry is checked, which easily ends up on the shelves of stores and organizations that professionally distribute jewelry.
But do not forget that even a product that is of impeccable quality cannot be completely clean. This is because gold is a material that is extremely soft, which means it can be easily erased or damaged. In order to make the jewelry strong, reliable and of high quality, it is made from a certain alloy, most of which is occupied by this particular noble metal.

Gold is one of the most coveted precious metals on Earth. It is used not only in the production of jewelry, but also in various fields of science, in the production of technology, and various equipment.
Gold in its pure form is rarely used, as it is a soft, ductile material. It is usually mixed with other metals to form alloys. In jewelry, quality is assessed by the gold content of the product. For this purpose, a sample in the form of a stamp is used.
Fineness 999 means almost pure gold, without impurities.
For the most part, gold jewelry contains hallmarks of 585 and 583. 585 standard means that the product contains 58.5% gold and 41.5% admixture of other metals. The deception in the production of gold jewelry is to indicate, for example, 585 standard, but in fact there will be much less gold. There are also complete fakes, when the product does not contain a single percentage of gold. How can you determine whether you have gold in front of you or not?

Many people, before taking their gold to a pawnshop or repair shop, think about how to find out the weight of gold at home so that they cannot be deceived in the future. Unfortunately, there are times when you have to go to a pawnshop or the gold item breaks or bends and needs to be sent in for repairs in order to be able to wear it again.
Also, there are people who mine gold on their own or collectors who like to collect gold trinkets. And, naturally, they want to know the weight of the mined gold, but, unfortunately, not everyone has home scales.
There is also a category of people who also want to weigh gold at home - these are females. When a young man gives them gold items, their curiosity wins, and they try in every way to find out the weight of the gold in order to determine the value of the jewelry.
There are many deceivers in the modern world, so everyone who has to go to a gold collection point worries about their product and is looking for ways to find out the weight of gold at home.
You can, of course, buy special scales, but in order to use them once you will have to pay a decent amount, so it is better to try to find out the weight of gold without them. They are expensive because of the built-in mechanism that gives the exact weight of the product. Of course, for those who have started gold mining or collecting, they cannot do without scales and will have to spend a lot of money.

Quality check before purchase
In order not to fall into the seller’s trap and not give your money for a low-quality product, you must first check it. If you don’t know how to find out the hallmark of gold when purchasing, we recommend that you first pay attention to the mark (or lack thereof); it should be clear, without abrasions or traces of soldering. And in order not to stumble upon a fake, you should follow a couple of simple rules:
- Purchase jewelry only from trusted stores;
- Please carefully consider the item before purchasing.
Now we can take a closer look at each rule. High-quality products can only be found in those institutions that professionally sell valuable items and have a positive reputation among buyers. It is quite possible that the cost of goods and services in such places will be significantly inflated, but in this case the client can be provided with all the necessary documentation confirming the high level of quality.
Ideally, when examining, it is recommended to determine the presence of the manufacturer's imprint, as well as the level of the sample. If the backing is made carefully and professionally, then this indicates that the manufacturer really knows his business.

How to test gold at home
There are several methods:
- With the help of iodine.
You will need iodine, a cotton swab and something sharp (knife, needle file, file, etc.). Lightly, in an inconspicuous place, preferably from the inside, scrape a little of the product being tested. If the product is clean, you can do without scraping the top layer. Next, dip a cotton swab in iodine and anoint the chip. Now observe the behavior of the iodine drop. If the drop immediately begins to turn white and evaporate, it’s a fake. On real gold, a drop of iodine remains dark in color and does not evaporate for a long time. Next, wipe off any remaining iodine, if any remains. If the place where the iodine was turned black, then this is real gold. On a fake decoration, the place turns white. The blackened area needs to be cleaned as soon as possible. At home, gold can be cleaned with toothpaste. In more detail and visually how to carry out this test, see the video below: - Check with ammonia. The principle of the method is the same as using iodine. The only thing is that you don’t need to drip ammonia, but rub it over the product being tested for 15 seconds. No reactions will occur with real gold. Other metals will reveal themselves by turning black, and the cotton swab will turn blue.
On the left - a stick soaked in ammonia, turned blue from interaction with fake gold. On the right - the cotton wool is clean, after contact with real gold.
- Lapis pencil (antiseptic containing silver nitrate, sold in pharmacies). The pencil reacts chemically with almost all metals except gold. Anoint the jewelry. Gold will not change color, fakes will darken. The method is also not very relevant if you have low-grade gold in front of you.
On the left - the fake has turned black. On the right is real gold.
The above methods for determining gold at home are only suitable for distinguishing crude fakes. The best method is using iodine and ammonia. To determine impurities, laboratory tests are suitable or you can contact a pawnshop.

What gold items will the new jewelry be made from?
Many private craftsmen or small jewelry companies work exclusively with the customer’s gold, since it is expensive for them to hold their own reserves of metal. But what kind of gold needs to be brought there for the jeweler to accept it 100%? A list of products accepted for work can be found on the websites of private companies or you can inquire about this directly from the master.
As a rule, the following gold items are accepted for melting down and subsequent production of new jewelry:
- old pendants, rings, rings;
- torn chains and mismatched earrings;
- items with missing inserts;
- dental crowns and denture discs;
- gold bullion;
- commemorative coins and their scrap;
- gold plates.
An important note regarding dental crowns. Jewelers prefer to deal with these items of at least 750 standard. And dental prosthetic discs made of gold must be stamped with the trademark of the factory that manufactured them. A similar requirement applies to gold plates - their surface must also have a clearly visible imprint with information about the manufacturer.
Otherwise, jewelers do not have strict conditions. They are ready to accept products of different standards for work, but not lower than 500, since lower-quality gold contains more copper than the precious metal itself. The color of scrap submitted for remelting can be any color - yellow, white, red or pink.
At the same time, there is a clear list of gold items that no workshop will accept for making new jewelry from. The list of prohibited items includes the following:
- gold in nuggets;
- plates without names (imprints) of manufacturers;
- items for laboratory or industrial purposes;
- gold filings and shavings;
- medals and orders.
When contacting a jeweler for services, be sure to check with him how much jewelry you need to hand over to create a particular product. The fact is that when making a new piece of jewelry you will definitely need a little more gold than it will ultimately contain in its finished form. The reason for this is the waste of the metal during its melting. Another small amount of gold becomes fine dust during the grinding and polishing of the cast jewelry.
On average, losses are about 10%. Moreover, the percentage increases when the item the client chooses to order is light in weight - the larger the item, the less gold will be lost during its manufacture.

You can independently find out the quality of such a product by slightly filing it with a file . If a darker layer is visible under the shiny light layer, it is a fake.
People with sensitive ears can try to determine the authenticity of gold jewelry by sound. It is recommended to throw the accessory onto a hard glass surface and listen carefully to the sound. Real gold sounds clear and clear (the sound resembles crystal). The fakes make a clanging sound. It is advisable to compare the sound of a new product with an existing one, the quality of which cannot be doubted.
There are several simple and repeatedly proven methods by which you can determine the quality of gold jewelry. For this purpose, you can use one of the options below.

The rings differ not only in design, but also in weight: some jewelry requires 2-3 grams of metal, while others require 10 grams or more. Today we will tell you how much an engagement ring weighs on average and what its weight depends on.
What determines the weight of a gold wedding ring?
- From the size. It's simple: two rings of the same width, but different sizes will have different weights. The same applies to the thickness of the jewelry: the thinner the strip of metal, the less weight.
- From the metal sample. The weight of 585-carat jewelry usually ranges from 2-4 grams, which is how much a medium-sized piece with a classic design weighs. A 750-carat piece of jewelry that is identical in appearance will weigh 30% more, this is due to the different densities of the metals included in the precious alloy. The density of pure gold is 19.32 g/cm³, while the 585 alloy has a density of 12.85-14.76 g/cm³ depending on the ligature (in the 585 alloy there is 58.5% gold, the rest is ligature). In the 750 alloy, the gold content is correspondingly 75%, and the density of such an alloy is higher. An identical white gold ring will weigh less because the alloy mixes yellow gold with more silver.
- From design. The width and thickness of the metal strip, non-standard shape, decorative elements (patterns, recesses) - all this affects the final weight of the product.
- From the presence of voids inside. A wedding ring can be solid or hollow. Externally identical jewelry can differ significantly in weight precisely because one of them is hollow: solid models are heavier and therefore more expensive.

Wedding ring type
How much does a 585 gold wedding ring weigh on average? How can you find out the weight of a wedding ring?
Is there a special event coming up soon and you have to choose wedding rings ? Important criteria are not only taste preferences, but also prices and practicality. With such a variety of gold products presented on the modern jewelry market, it is easy to get confused. That is why it will not be superfluous to find out which rings are the most popular , what the weight of the wedding ring depends on, as well as the differences between full-weight and hollow models.
Timeless classic
Do you prefer gold jewelry ? In this case, it is recommended to choose 585 grade products, which have a number of advantages:
- The best option in terms of price-quality ratio.
- A classic 585 sterling engagement ring weighs on average 2-5 grams.
- The products are durable because they contain additional metals (copper, silver).
In addition, you can buy an engagement ring in any color and shade. The alloy, consisting of 58.5% gold, 33.5% copper and 8% silver, has yellow or red tones. To obtain a white shade of gold, palladium and nickel are added to the alloy.

How to check the gold content in a ring, chain or earrings and find out their purity?
Gold rings, earrings and chains are some of the most common jewelry items. How exactly can you find out their sample? To answer this question, we need to consider how jewelers determine the hallmark of gold jewelry and whether it is possible to do this yourself at home.
How do jewelers determine the purity of gold?
One of the most common ways to determine gold karats is to test for exposure to nitric acid. The resulting reaction varies depending on the amount of precious metal contained in the alloy.
To do this, a thin layer is cut off from the surface of the ring. And nitric acid is applied to the resulting sample.
The jeweler determines the change in color as a result of the action of acid on the alloy and based on this the percentage of content is determined.
Gold rings and other jewelry are checked in this way in jewelry stores and workshops, for a fee.

How to find out the weight of gold at home
Composition of gold
Everyone knows that gold products are not made of pure gold, it is alloyed with other metals. In order to find out what a piece of jewelry is made of, you can check the carat number in any jewelry store. Accordingly, the higher the carat, the more gold there is in the product. If a piece of jewelry says it contains 24 carats, it means it is made of pure gold.
What metals are used to make gold jewelry:
Other metals may also be added to achieve the desired shade.
In fact, other metals are added to jewelry not because they want to add weight, but because pure gold itself is soft and therefore not very convenient to make jewelry from.
To make white gold, nickel and palladium are added. The second metal is much better, since nickel can cause an allergic reaction.
If the gold jewelry has a pinkish tint, it means that copper has been added to the product. But for a green tint, silver is added.
Based on this, we can safely say that adding other metals to gold jewelry does not affect the weight, but, on the contrary, makes the jewelry more durable and beautiful.
What determines the weight of gold?
- magnifying glass;
- laboratory scales with an accuracy class of at least 3 or 4;
- calipers;
- calico;
- superficial inspection;
- cleaning with a tool;
- applying one of the types of reagent;
- all kinds of scrapers;
- finely cut files;
- gold chloride – no more than twelve seconds;
- acid chemical reagent for the 375-585th and 750th samples - ten and twenty seconds, respectively;
- potassium iodide – from eight to twelve seconds.
4. Sample . The surface of the material is carefully checked with reagents, sometimes several at once, and is confirmed by the tabular instructions.
Samples are tested according to the following scheme:
- gold and other alloys with a precious metal content of up to 60% are treated with gold chloride, and after the corresponding standard with a reagent;
- 750 gold is tested with a standard reagent, but to detect handicraft fakes, you can limit yourself to gold chloride;
- alloys with gold from 80% are tested with a solution of potassium iodide.
Description of samples and their reactions to chemical compounds:
- 375th sample - a greenish or brownish stain from chlorine is obtained, and the drop itself is completely transparent;
- 500th - the chlorine stain turns brown, and the very drop is transparent and clean;
- 585th - a golden or yellowish stain from chlorine, and a light brown stain from a standard chemical reagent;
- 750th – the stain is often absent or barely noticeable;
- The 750th sample of the so-called “white gold” is a bright brown spot;
- 800th - potassium iodide produces a dark, rich red stain;
- vinegar – if the product tarnishes in vinegar, it is not real gold;
- glass - gold can be rubbed across the glass, no traces should remain, since gold is much softer;
- porcelain - if the gold strip remains yellow, then it is most likely gold;

- 958;
- 900;
- 916;
- 585;
- 750;
- 500;

How can you determine gold content at home?
How can you determine gold content at home?
Quality check before purchase
Quality check before purchase
In order not to fall into the seller’s trap and not give your money for a low-quality product, you must first check it. If you don’t know how to find out the hallmark of gold when purchasing, we recommend that you first pay attention to the mark (or lack thereof); it should be clear, without abrasions or traces of soldering. And in order not to stumble upon a fake, you should follow a couple of simple rules:
- Purchase jewelry only from trusted stores;
Determination methods
Determination methods
If we talk about how to determine the purity of gold with your own hands, then there are many different methods by which you can do this. Conducting such experiments at home is not difficult, since they are all simple and accessible. The determination process is a bit like laboratory work that schoolchildren do in physics and chemistry lessons.
Using simple and completely uncomplicated methods, you can determine a truly high-quality product. In order to understand the principle of determining quality, it is necessary to apply the following methods:
- Carry out a sound check;
- Determine the level of strength;
- Treat with iodine and vinegar;
- Carry out the reaction under the influence of sunlight.
THERE ARE ALSO SOME OTHER METHODS IN WHICH YOU NEED TO USE A MAGNET, A LAPIS PENCIL AND OTHER DEVICES.
First, let's look at how to identify gold by sound. This method has been in effect for several hundred years. To determine, it is necessary to throw a specific gold product onto a hard surface with the most even plane. This material will produce a peculiar ringing sound, similar to crystal.
Many experts trust this test and often use it, but ideally a person should have an exceptional ear for music. With items such as chains or bracelets, this option will not be effective.
The strength test is a test that has been used since ancient times. It is popular due to its reliability.
It is clear that in a jewelry store no one will allow the user to carry out such a test, but it is quite possible to determine gold in a similar way at home. All it takes is to bite or scratch the object.
If the metal is not real, then under the top layer you will find a black or dark alloy. This option is recommended to be used only in cases where the owner is not afraid of ruining the decoration.
Chemical testing is also in great demand and popularity. Most often they are carried out using ordinary iodine, which is found in every home. First, apply one drop of iodine to the back of the product. Then leave it for a few minutes and wait until the reaction ends. After this, the iodine can be wiped off. If no traces remain, this means that there was no reaction, which means the gold is genuine.
To carry out such actions, it is not necessary to have a device specifically designed for determining the gold standard. If iodine is not available, vinegar can be used as an alternative. The jewelry should be placed in a container with this acid. If it is not real, then after some time it will change its original color.
A lapis pencil is an item that is designed to quickly stop bleeding. You can buy it at any pharmacy. To begin with, the gold is urinated in water, after which a small dot is made with a pencil. The fake will begin to oxidize and enter into a chemical reaction with the pencil. The advantage of this method is that the result appears within a few seconds.
Very often, many scammers process simple metal objects with a small amount of noble fossil and pass them off as valuable. You can check the authenticity of such things using a simple magnet. It will not be possible to determine the quality in a situation where materials that are not susceptible to the influence of a magnetic field were used for the counterfeit.
Also, the determination of gold purity is carried out by contact with another gold item. Every home has a piece of jewelry that has an impeccable reputation and there is no doubt about its quality. Ideally, it is best if both items have an identical sample. It is required to draw two lines with both decorations, applying the same force. If all the jewelry is real, then the marks and prints will remain the same.
The most modern way of checking is spectral analysis, which you can carry out with our company.
Information about gold
Information about gold
In order to do a basic check, it is not necessary to have a device or complex equipment for determining gold. It is enough to know the properties and characteristics of the metal. The noble substance has a rich yellow color. Alloys can be of different colors. White gold, which is the most common, contains nickel, silver and platinum.

Gold - we check for authenticity with water
Gold - we check for authenticity with water
How to test gold at home

Gold buyers test gold jewelry with acids. First, gold is passed over a touchstone (silicon slate), and depending on the sample on the product, a certain acid is used. A little bit of metal remains on the stone, and a drop of acid is dropped onto it. The fake will evaporate under the influence of acid, and traces of real gold will remain in place.
The first thing they do in a pawnshop is examine the sample. It must be clear in all corners and bear the manufacturer's mark. Then the specialist places the jewelry on the magnet. This is such a quick method to eliminate gross fakes. Gold is not magnetic, but if another metal is plated with gold, it will be attracted to the magnet. Well, then the specialist uses chemistry to determine the quality of the product.

How to find out the hallmark of a gold product at home: Archimedes' method
To carry out the test, we will need electronic scales, a calculator, and water. The method is based on Archimedes' law, according to which we determine the density of the product and compare it with the standard. To calculate, we need to know the weight of the product and the weight of the displaced liquid. Then perform a mathematical operation and compare it with the table of metal densities. More similar, it is described in the video - how to determine real gold and its purity by water:

The nuances of making gold items from your own gold
The nuances of making gold items from your own gold
When you have a decent amount of jewelry at home that has fallen into disrepair or become unfashionable, you can start making gold items from your own gold. This type of service is provided by small jewelry companies and private craftsmen. In this case, you can save a lot, because you only have to pay for the work, and the lion’s share of the cost of finished jewelry is made up of precious metals.
As a result, you will receive a unique item that can even be made according to your sketch. Making jewelry from your own gold is attractive because of the opportunity to obtain an exclusive product, but this step must be taken after careful consideration. There are many pitfalls that you need to study before going to the first jeweler you come across.

What gold items will the new jewelry be made from?
What gold items will the new jewelry be made from?
Many private craftsmen or small jewelry companies work exclusively with the customer’s gold, since it is expensive for them to hold their own reserves of metal. But what kind of gold needs to be brought there for the jeweler to accept it 100%? A list of products accepted for work can be found on the websites of private companies or you can inquire about this directly from the master.
As a rule, the following gold items are accepted for melting down and subsequent production of new jewelry:
- old pendants, rings, rings;
- torn chains and mismatched earrings;
- items with missing inserts;
- dental crowns and denture discs;
- gold bullion;
- commemorative coins and their scrap;
- gold in nuggets;
- plates without names (imprints) of manufacturers;
- items for laboratory or industrial purposes;
- gold filings and shavings;

What are you paying for?
What are you paying for?
There is no single cost that can be quoted for making a new item from your gold.

Price depends on many factors
What does the amount consist of? | Why else is it growing? |
Let's start with the fact that making a ring from your own gold will be cheaper than making a chain from your own gold. | The key factor in price is the difficulty of creation. A ring is much easier to make than a chain assembled from hundreds of small elements. And if the product is elaborate and requires a lot of time to manufacture, then the price may rise due to the complexity of the work. |
Basically, you are paying for the labor of the jewelry maker. | But the final price includes not only the direct work of the author. The receipt will also indicate the cost for making the wax model. |
Time counts. | In the event that a new decoration needs to be made in a short time, then there will also be an extra charge for urgency. |
In addition, the final cost will be influenced by the weight of the finished item and the presence of precious stones in it. | You can also hand them over for inlay or choose from stones offered by the jeweler, which will also affect the price. |
If the gold you brought is not enough to make the selected product, you will need to pay extra for the missing amount. But jewelers are willing to add only a small amount of their own precious metal - no more than one gram - since their reserves are usually small.
A huge advantage of turning to private jewelers for a new piece of jewelry is the fact that, if you wish, you can agree to pay part of the amount in gold. That is, if the metal you brought is more than enough for the selected product and there is some amount left, then it is possible to calculate its cost and subtract it from the price for the finished product. But you need to understand that this gold is valued as scrap, and therefore its value is not too high.
If you do not want to include the remaining precious metal in the price, then the excess must be returned to you. They are returned in the form of a gold plate, which must certainly be stamped with the code of a jewelry company or private craftsman.

Work takes time
Work takes time
Different companies offer different lead times for making your gold items. The time frame depends not only on the complexity of the order, but also on the number of jewelry craftsmen.
Therefore, some companies promise to cope with the task in two to three weeks, while others immediately admit that it takes them from a month to a month and a half to complete the application efficiently.
Therefore, if you are planning to receive new gold jewelry for the holiday, then place your order in advance so as not to overpay for urgency.
However, if we are talking about an engagement ring that you want to make from your own gold, then the time frame may not be so long. Craftsmen admit that making an engagement ring is the easiest thing to do, since it usually has a laconic design. To make an engagement ring, the jeweler rolls out a block of gold, bends it and welds it with gold solder.
Then he shapes it into a perfect circle and polishes it so that the engagement ring shines beautifully. The second manufacturing method allows you to create perfect, seamless rings. In this case, the master makes a wax model of the ring in advance, which adds value to the finished product. It is noteworthy that the jewelers themselves admit that such gold rings have no external differences.
But many newlyweds, following superstitions, are happy to shell out twice as much money to ensure that their rings are seamless.
There are several ways to order a product made from your own gold. Firstly, the client can choose the design of the accessory from the catalog, which any craftsman or jewelry company must have. In some cases, they even have samples made from inexpensive metals.
Then a person can carefully consider the options in the smallest detail and choose the most suitable one for himself. You can also bring your finished gold jewelry to jewelers so they can sketch the design and take all measurements. But even if you only have a photo from a glossy magazine, this option will also work.
The master will draw a sketch and create a 3D visualization in a special computer program. Once the customer approves the submitted design, the jeweler will begin work.
Clients are always warned that if they want a copy of some model of a famous fashion house, they will still not receive an identical item. However, you can count on the fact that your gold new thing will be 85-90% a copy of the model you like.

Don't let yourself be deceived by a scammer
Don't let yourself be deceived by a scammer
The most pressing topic, which all experts mostly refuse to talk about, is fraud on the part of jewelers. Of course, the lion's share of goldsmiths work honestly. But only a few of them speak publicly on this issue and give clients advice on how to protect themselves from dishonest colleagues or outright scammers.
When contacting unverified authors, people may encounter these types of scams.
- Substitution of precious stones.
- Dilution of gold composition.
- Conscious increase in the consumption of precious metals in the manufacture of jewelry.
Few people turn to private jewelers to melt down their gold, and therefore word of mouth does not work well in these cases. Not each of us has such acquaintances whose opinion we could safely rely on. Therefore, you will have to contact jewelers at your own peril and risk, testing their honesty experimentally.
To insure yourself against fraud, you need to be extremely careful and require various additional checks.
For example, if you brought a gold item to a jeweler inlaid with stones that you want to see in a new piece of jewelry, ask that you record all their characteristics. Carefully inspect the stone yourself and note that there are no chips or scratches on it.
If the pebbles are small and there are a lot of them, carefully count the number. When receiving a new gold item, double-check everything carefully.
Some craftsmen sin by diluting the composition of gold when melting it. That is, you have handed over metal of the 750th standard, but you already run the risk of receiving jewelry of the 585th, or even 500th standard. A dishonest jeweler achieves this by adding silver or copper to the gold alloy. There is only one way to protect yourself from this.
The finished piece of jewelry received from the jeweler must bear a special stamp of the Russian State Assay Office of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation. This is a guarantee that the product has been tested and corresponds to the declared quality. Only a desperate few will dare to forge such a mark, since this is a criminal offense. If you see that the mark is missing or does not look as it should, take the product to the nearest pawn shop for inspection.
There they will tell you exactly the gold standard. And if you are convinced of deception on the part of the jeweler, immediately submit a corresponding statement to law enforcement agencies.
Finally, the inflated costs of gold in the manufacture of an accessory are not easy to control. Large remains in the form of shavings or sawdust can be melted down and returned to the owner.
But the smallest dust is irretrievably lost, even though many jewelers have special equipment with an air filtration system to preserve miniature gold grains. Experts testify: on average, during the manufacture of precious items, from two to six percent of the weight of the gold sold is lost.
If we are talking about exclusive products with delicate and complex work, then losses can increase to nine to ten percent. But anything greater than these indicators should lead you to believe that they are trying to deceive you. It is quite difficult to punish for this, since there is no clear evidence.
The only thing that can be done is to ruin the reputation of a careless jeweler by spreading the word as widely as possible that he is stealing gold. Therefore, it is better to immediately contact companies that have been working in the jewelry market for several years and value their name.
If you are worried that you are not able to follow all the nuances, you can simply exchange your gold for a finished product offered by the craftsmen. Almost every jewelry company has such an exchange fund. They will calculate the cost of your precious metal and show you an assortment of ready-made gold jewelry that your reserves will be enough to purchase. In this case, you won't spend a penny at all.

How to check whether a ring is gold or not: 7 methods for checking gold

Reading time: 7 min.
The demand for jewelry made from gold continues to grow steadily every year. Due to the impressive cost of products made from this metal, they are often counterfeited, and the likelihood of purchasing a product of poor quality is quite high. Many people often encounter situations throughout their lives when they need to know the quality of a gold accessory.
How to easily and quickly check a gold ring at home?
How to easily and quickly check a gold ring at home?
Using a magnet
Using a magnet
To check jewelry in this way, you need to bring a strong magnet to it. If the jewelry contains a significant amount of iron impurities, it will be attracted to the magnet. But this method cannot be called reliable.
If the jewelry does not stick to the magnet, this does not mean that it is 100% gold. Fraudsters often use aluminum, bronze and copper, which are not magnetic, when making counterfeits.
For softness
For softness
One of the main properties of this metal is softness. You can scratch the accessory from the inside with pressure using a pin or other sharp object. A mark will remain on the noble metal. In some cases, it may be slightly bitten by the teeth. This way the softness of the product will be felt better and a dent from the bite will appear on it.
Reference! Pure gold is a very soft metal, not particularly resistant to wear and external influences, so jewelry is usually made from an equally beautiful, but much more durable alloy.
Visual analysis
Visual analysis
If you carefully examine the joints of the jewelry, the color of the metal in these areas will be slightly different (it will be brighter). This is explained by the fact that jewelry is soldered with gold solder, which has a higher standard, because it melts more easily. This sign indicates that the gold is real.
By smell
By smell
To determine the quality of a gold accessory, you can smell it. If the smell of metal is clearly felt, it is a fake. High-quality gold products have no odor, unlike, for example, silver, which has a characteristic metallic odor.
It is always necessary to carefully consider the mark. Gold jewelry must be affixed with a corresponding stamp indicating the manufacturer and gold purity in digital terms.
In accordance with generally accepted requirements, the sample is placed in the following places:
- on rings - inside the jewelry (on rings with a stone or with figured additions, the sample is usually placed in the middle);
- on stud earrings - on a clasp or directly on the stem;
- on earrings with an English lock - on the outer or inner side of the bow;
- on bracelets and chains - mainly with a clasp;
- on a gold watch - directly from the inside of the dial itself (if both the dial and the strap are made of gold, the hallmark is placed inside the clasp).
Reference! The higher the purity, the more gold the product contains.
Best 2 ways

In all the variety of methods for determining the quality of gold products, the two options below are considered to be the best.
Vinegar and iodine
Vinegar and iodine
Testing a gold item with vinegar is one of the most common and fastest methods. To do this, the product must be immersed in a container with vinegar for a short time (5 minutes). If the gold item darkens as a result, this is a sign of a fake.
Iodine is considered to be the best marker for gold. When a drop of iodine is applied to real gold, a chemical reaction occurs between them and a stain is formed. Apart from gold, no metal reacts with iodine. Sometimes to check it is necessary to thoroughly wipe the surface of a product made of such metal.

How much does a wedding ring weigh - Useful materials on the Russian Gems corporate website
How much does a wedding ring weigh - Useful materials on the Russian Gems corporate website
Gone are the days when jewelry stores had mostly standard wedding rings in the form of a strip of precious metal with a rounded profile. In the Soviet past, rings with patterns, inserts and unusual decor were made to order, but today such jewelry can be bought in any jewelry store.
The rings differ not only in design, but also in weight: some jewelry requires 2-3 grams of metal, while others require 10 grams or more. Today we will tell you how much an engagement ring weighs on average and what its weight depends on.
What determines the weight of a gold wedding ring?
How does the weight of a men's and women's wedding ring differ?
How does the weight of a men's and women's wedding ring differ?
The weight of the ring does not depend on who it is intended for: there are massive women's jewelry and light men's jewelry. But usually men's rings are wider and larger in size, so more precious alloy is required to make them.
If we talk about classic gold wedding rings, the average weight of a woman’s jewelry is 2-4 grams, and the average weight of a man’s ring is 2.5-5 grams.
Wide and thin rings
Wide and thin rings
The weight of the decoration, of course, depends on its width. A narrow ring weighs 1.5-2 grams, a wide one - 5-7 grams and even more. But if you have a choice - a wide or narrow ring, we recommend starting not from the weight of the product, but from the parameters of the finger.
- Short fingers. Narrow strips of metal (2-4 mm) will look beautiful.
- Fingers of medium length will decorate products with a width of 4-6 mm.
- Long narrow fingers. On such fingers, very wide rings (more than 8 mm) and narrow jewelry (2-3 mm) look aesthetically pleasing.
- Long dense fingers. Jewelry with a width of 6-8 mm is suitable for such fingers.
Solid and hollow rings
Solid and hollow rings
A hollow (blown) decoration weighs less than a solid (full-weight) one. This is its main advantage: the less gold it took to make the ring, the cheaper it is. The creation of hollow products has made them more accessible to buyers on a smaller budget. Newlyweds can choose rings that seem massive in appearance, but pay for them as if they were light.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8ppCrJY2tc
Another advantage of blown gold rings is that they are comfortable to wear and almost imperceptible on the finger. But there are also disadvantages:
- tendency to deformation. Hollow jewelry breaks easily if handled carelessly and can become deformed if worn carelessly;
- difficulties with repairs. Jewelers do not like to repair blown jewelry, and if they take on the job, the cost of such repairs can be commensurate with the cost of a new ring.
If you want to buy hollow rings, then carefully inspect them at the time of purchase. They must be of the correct shape, without visible damage. If the ring is of high quality and treated with care, it will last for decades.
Ring weight recommendations
Ring weight recommendations
Most rings are made in a weight of 2-8 grams; this range includes jewelry that feels comfortable on the finger and is not prone to rapid deformation. If the ring is smaller and thinner, it will be easy to bend or break, but if it is heavier and thicker, it will be felt on the finger and may cause discomfort.
The golden weight mean is 3-6 grams of precious alloy in one wedding ring. But these are general recommendations; when choosing jewelry, you should focus only on your own feelings: for some, 5 grams of gold on a finger seems like an unbearable burden, while others feel comfortable with a ring weighing 8-10 grams.
If you want a product weighing more than 8 grams, but the jewelry store does not have such models, you can make them to order. But before that, we advise you to make sure that you will be comfortable with such a ring. Try on a piece of jewelry with a suitable weight on your ring finger.
Look for them in the department not with engagement rings, but with regular or exclusive rings. Products weighing more than 8 grams are difficult to find, because such rings are designed for daily wear.
For spectacular decorative rings, the rule of optimal weight does not always apply - designers can develop a massive piece of jewelry specifically for an evening out, which is not worn every day.

How much does a 585 gold wedding ring weigh on average? How can you find out the weight of a wedding ring?
How much does a 585 gold wedding ring weigh on average? How can you find out the weight of a wedding ring?
Is there a special event coming up soon and you have to choose wedding rings ? Important criteria are not only taste preferences, but also prices and practicality. With such a variety of gold products presented on the modern jewelry market, it is easy to get confused. That is why it will not be superfluous to find out which rings are the most popular , what the weight of the wedding ring depends on, as well as the differences between full-weight and hollow models.
Timeless classic
What determines the average weight of a wedding ring?
What determines the average weight of a wedding ring?
Weight can be anything and, as a rule, does not affect the choice. But the following factors influence :
- Size.
- Width.
- Thickness.
- Number of grams of gold in a wedding ring.
- Client's design preferences.
- Availability of additional decor.
A man's wedding ring weighs more than a woman's (if one item is compared), since it is smaller and lighter. The average weight for men is 2.5-4.5 grams, for women - 2-4 grams .
According to general recommendations, the ring should not weigh more than 8 grams. It’s good if the weight varies from 3 to 6 grams. Lightweight jewelry weighing 2 grams, comfortable for everyday wear, will not be felt on your finger.
However, this option has one drawback - they can become deformed over time.
Full-weight wedding rings or hollow ones: pros and cons
Full-weight wedding rings or hollow ones: pros and cons
For true connoisseurs who want to get more precious metal in one volume , full-length wedding rings will be available. But you should understand that a full-weight product of the same volume as a hollow one will weigh more. The only disadvantage of such products is the price .
Full weight wedding rings
Hollow (blown) gold is a lightweight product. This production technology allows you to maintain volume by reducing weight and make gold accessible to many. Although such jewelry looks massive, it weighs little.
The main reasons why people buy this category of jewelry: they are comfortable for everyday wear, they look aesthetically pleasing , the stores offer a varied assortment, and the desire to save money (the price of such jewelry is attractive due to its low weight).
Therefore, if you decide to purchase blown gold, first of all, think about quality. The disadvantages of this category of jewelry are that they quickly break and become deformed if handled carelessly. Jewelers are reluctant to undertake repairs to such items, and even if there is a willing craftsman, the cost of repairs can be unpleasantly surprising.
Hollow Wedding Rings
If your budget is limited, buy blown rings from reputable stores and inspect them carefully during purchase. Choose what your heart is drawn to. Reliability, heavy weight and practicality versus lightness and accessibility. In any case, the choice is yours.
Now, armed with the knowledge gained after reading the recommendations, you will certainly choose the rings you have long dreamed of. And they will delight you for a long time and remind you of unforgettable moments!

How to check the gold content in a ring, chain or earrings and find out their purity?
How to check the gold content in a ring, chain or earrings and find out their purity?
Gold rings, earrings and chains are some of the most common jewelry items. How exactly can you find out their sample? To answer this question, we need to consider how jewelers determine the hallmark of gold jewelry and whether it is possible to do this yourself at home.
How do jewelers determine the purity of gold?
How do jewelers determine the purity of gold?
One of the most common ways to determine gold karats is to test for exposure to nitric acid. The resulting reaction varies depending on the amount of precious metal contained in the alloy.
To do this, a thin layer is cut off from the surface of the ring. And nitric acid is applied to the resulting sample.
The jeweler determines the change in color as a result of the action of acid on the alloy and based on this the percentage of content is determined.
Gold rings and other jewelry are checked in this way in jewelry stores and workshops, for a fee.
How can you test the purity of gold yourself?
How can you test the purity of gold yourself?
You can also determine the hallmark of a gold ring, earrings or chain at home. To do this, you need to purchase a testing kit.
The principle of determining carats is the same.
The kit contains several bottles of nitric acid of varying concentrations. Each bottle is marked, for example, “10 K” or “14 K”.
The principle of operation is quite simple. You need to rub the jewelry on a special stone that is included in the kit.
After this, particles of gold will remain on the stone, with which experiments will be carried out. On these particles you need to drop a little acid from a bottle, first, with the lowest carat mark.
If after this there are noticeable, significant changes in color or the particles dissolve altogether, this means that the purity of the alloy is less than the mark for bottles of acid.
If the color changes are slight, then this indicates that the carat of the gold product matches the label on the bottle of acid.
Accuracy is +/- 1 carat.
Continue testing with other bottles until there is very little change in color - this is an indication that the purity of the alloy matches the number on the bottle label.
It is recommended to start experiments with the bottle with the smallest number on it and repeat the process, gradually using bottles with larger carats.
This is the basic principle of using a home kit - you should use the acid in order of increasing karat, although specific instructions and details may vary from kit to kit. Be sure to read the instructions before use.
What do the test results mean?
What do the test results mean?
To interpret the results obtained, you need to start from the fact that carat means the number of parts of pure gold in a gold alloy.
Jewelry is not usually made from pure gold because the metal is too soft. This is why it is mixed with other metals to create a stronger alloy. Different alloys may have different proportions of gold and other metals, and karat numbers convey information about the level of gold content in such a mixture.
The maximum content of 100% corresponds to 24 carats. Accordingly, 1 carat means that this alloy contains 1/24 of the total alloy of pure gold.
So, for example, if a ring is 18K, then that means that 18 of the 24 parts are pure gold, and the remaining 6 parts are other metals. 10 K means that an alloy of this purity contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts other metals.
Let's look at what other options there are for determining the carat number, and what they mean.
To determine the carat number, it is not necessary to test the purity of the jewelry using nitric acid. Another way to tell the hallmark of a piece of jewelry is to look for marks on it.
Gold jewelry is almost always marked with the number of carats. Usually the mark is placed on the inside of the product. The stamp contains a number and the letter K or KT, which means the number of carats in it.
For example, the distinctive mark "14 K" or "14 CT" means that the earring or ring is made of 14 karat alloy.
However, purity marks do not always come in the form of carat markings.
It is not uncommon to see numbers such as 583 or 750 imprinted on gold jewelry.
If your jewelry has marks like this, it may be in parts per thousand.
To convert purity from parts per thousand to carats, multiply the number by 0.024.
This way you will see that the numbers 583 and 750 are converted to 14 and 18 K respectively.
The number 417 represents 10K, the number 833 represents 20K, and 917 represents 22K. 24K, which is a karat of pure gold, is represented by the number 999.
Below is the scale for karats and parts per thousand:
999 = 24K
917 = 22K
833 = 20K
750 = 18 K
583 = 14 K
417 = 10 K
Thus, the purity of gold, expressed as parts per thousand, is equal to the carat number divided by 24 and multiplied by 1,000.

How to find out the weight of gold at home
How to find out the weight of gold at home
Composition of gold
What determines the weight of gold?
It is not for nothing that each gold piece of jewelry has its own hallmark, this means that the weight is different everywhere. Therefore, before you find out the weight of the ring at home, it is advisable to know its sample.
Let's look at ways to weigh the 583 ring. Naturally, the exact weight can only be calculated with electronic scales, but there are times when you urgently need to find out how much a product weighs, and for this you can do the following:
- Build homemade scales;
- If you have a gold ring of the same standard, but its weight is known, then you can take these two rings and compare their volumes due to the displaced water.
In fact, knowing the sample size of a product is very useful; with its help, you can not only calculate the weight, but also the percentage of gold composition. To do this, you simply divide the sample number by one hundred, and then you will find out what percentage of gold is contained in the jewelry.
How to determine the weight of gold at home
How to determine the weight of gold at home
- If the sample size of the product is known, then you can use Archimedes’ law and calculate the weight of gold. For this method you will need:
- Water;
- Glass and pan;
- Insulin syringe.
Place a glass of water in the pan (the glass should be filled to the brim). Now lower the gold item into the glass and the excess liquid will pour out. Now you need to calculate the volume of water that remains in the pan, for this you need a syringe.
By drawing this liquid into an insulin syringe, you can see its volume, which should be multiplied by the density of gold, and then you will find out the weight of the jewelry.
In fact, this method of determining weight is not as simple as it seems. The density of a gold product is always different, since it depends not only on the sample, but also on the color of the metal.
- Before you find out the weight of the ring at home, make homemade scales that will help you calculate the approximate weight of the gold item.
For this you will need:
- Stick;
- Thread;
- Coins (preferably “USSR times”);
- Two containers.
We take a stick (preferably so that it does not bend) and tie a thread to its middle. It is better to secure the thread with something so that it does not fall. You should also tie strings to the two ends of the stick, secure and hang containers on them.
Next, put identical coins in the containers. It is recommended to use Soviet-era money, since each coin has its own specific weight. You can learn it with the help of literature. Then we move the stick relative to the thread until it is parallel to the ground. After you have completed this procedure, you can determine the weight of gold using different coins.
- There is another way where weighing gold will be very easy and quick. To do this, you can use a kitchen scale. It’s better, of course, when the scales are electronic, then the weight of the jewelry will be more accurate.
- There is also a method for which you will need the following:
- A small gasket (it will be the basis of the scales);
- Glue plastic;
- Ruler (preferably wooden);
- Medium sized plastic measuring cup;
- Lid for jar;
- Measuring spoons.
Using adhesive plastic, glue the gasket to the table (preferably with a flat surface) on which you will weigh the product. After gluing the gasket to the plastic, check that it is evenly fixed.
Now you should put a ruler on this pad so that it looks like a children's swing. Then glue adhesive plastic to the bottom of the cup and the top of the lid. Glue the lid to one side of the ruler and the measuring cup to the other, with the side where the adhesive is located. The items should be placed so that the ruler is parallel to the table.
A gold ornament should be placed in the center of the lid. Now pour water into the container until the ruler is level. In order to know the exact amount of water, measuring spoons are used.
After this procedure, all that remains is to calculate the weight. Determine the weight of water in the glass, this will be the estimated weight of the product.
Of course, all these methods provide only an approximate figure. Therefore, if you want to find out the exact weight, you will have to contact jewelers or a pawnshop, where they will tell you the exact weight of the product.
How to choose the right gold item
How to choose the right gold item
In order to purchase high-quality gold jewelry, it is best to go to a jewelry store or online store and it is not advisable to buy products at home.
When choosing jewelry, look at its mark (it is different in each country). You can also read all the necessary information on the price tag:
- Weight;
- Try;
- Compound;
- The name of the company where the jewelry was made.
If you buy the product in a store, you won’t have to look for information on how to weigh gold at home.
When choosing gold jewelry, look not only at the appearance, you also need to pay attention to the reverse side. If a person is prone to allergic reactions, then white gold should be purchased with caution, because it contains nickel, which can cause allergies.
Determining the weight of gold NOT at home
Determining the weight of gold NOT at home
In fact, there are many places where it is possible to weigh gold. In all pawn shops and jewelry stores you can see electronic scales that can calculate the exact weight of an item. But many trust only themselves, and therefore most people are looking for an answer to the question: “How to weigh gold at home?”
If you need to find out the exact weight of the product, you can turn to a pawnshop or jewelry store for help, but you should make sure that no one is deceiving anyone. And in order not to take risks, you can spend money once and buy electronic scales. And then the question of how to determine the weight of gold at home will be removed.
How to care for gold jewelry
- magnifying glass;
- laboratory scales with an accuracy class of at least 3 or 4;
- calipers;
- calico;
- superficial inspection;
- cleaning with a tool;
- applying one of the types of reagent;
- all kinds of scrapers;
- finely cut files;
- gold chloride – no more than twelve seconds;
- acid chemical reagent for the 375-585th and 750th samples - ten and twenty seconds, respectively;
- potassium iodide – from eight to twelve seconds.
4. Sample . The surface of the material is carefully checked with reagents, sometimes several at once, and is confirmed by the tabular instructions.
Samples are tested according to the following scheme:
- gold and other alloys with a precious metal content of up to 60% are treated with gold chloride, and after the corresponding standard with a reagent;
- 750 gold is tested with a standard reagent, but to detect handicraft fakes, you can limit yourself to gold chloride;
- alloys with gold from 80% are tested with a solution of potassium iodide.
Description of samples and their reactions to chemical compounds:
- 375th sample - a greenish or brownish stain from chlorine is obtained, and the drop itself is completely transparent;
- 500th - the chlorine stain turns brown, and the very drop is transparent and clean;
- 585th - a golden or yellowish stain from chlorine, and a light brown stain from a standard chemical reagent;
- 750th – the stain is often absent or barely noticeable;
- The 750th sample of the so-called “white gold” is a bright brown spot;
- 800th - potassium iodide produces a dark, rich red stain;
- vinegar – if the product tarnishes in vinegar, it is not real gold;
- glass - gold can be rubbed across the glass, no traces should remain, since gold is much softer;
- porcelain - if the gold strip remains yellow, then it is most likely gold;

- 958;
- 900;
- 916;
- 585;
- 750;
- 500;

How can you determine gold content at home?
- Purchase jewelry only from trusted stores;
- Carry out a sound check;
- Determine the level of strength;
- Treat with iodine and vinegar;
In order to do a basic check, it is not necessary to have a device or complex equipment for determining gold. It is enough to know the properties and characteristics of the metal. The noble substance has a rich yellow color. Alloys can be of different colors. White gold, which is the most common, contains nickel, silver and platinum.

Gold - we check for authenticity with water
How to check gold in a pawnshop
Precious metal density table:
metal | Silver | Gold 375, 500 | Gold 583, 585 | Gold 750 | Gold 999 |
density | 9 — 10 | 11 — 12 | 12 — 14 | 14 — 17 | 19,3 |

Return
What gold items will the new jewelry be made from?
Many private craftsmen or small jewelry companies work exclusively with the customer’s gold, since it is expensive for them to hold their own reserves of metal. But what kind of gold needs to be brought there for the jeweler to accept it 100%? A list of products accepted for work can be found on the websites of private companies or you can inquire about this directly from the master.
As a rule, the following gold items are accepted for melting down and subsequent production of new jewelry:
- old pendants, rings, rings;
- torn chains and mismatched earrings;
- items with missing inserts;
- dental crowns and denture discs;
- gold bullion;
- commemorative coins and their scrap;
- gold in nuggets;
- plates without names (imprints) of manufacturers;
- items for laboratory or industrial purposes;
- gold filings and shavings;
Moreover, the percentage increases when the item the client chooses to order is light in weight - the larger the item, the less gold will be lost during its manufacture.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKAS5cAqZsE

Work takes time
Different companies offer different lead times for making your gold items.

854
Reading time: 7 min.
The demand for jewelry made from gold continues to grow steadily every year. Due to the impressive cost of products made from this metal, they are often counterfeited, and the likelihood of purchasing a product of poor quality is quite high. Many people often encounter situations throughout their lives when they need to know the quality of a gold accessory.
How to easily and quickly check a gold ring at home?
One of the main properties of this metal is softness. You can scratch the accessory from the inside with pressure using a pin or other sharp object. A mark will remain on the noble metal. In some cases, it may be slightly bitten by the teeth. This way the softness of the product will be felt better and a dent from the bite will appear on it.
Reference! Pure gold is a very soft metal, not particularly resistant to wear and external influences, so jewelry is usually made from an equally beautiful, but much more durable alloy.
Visual analysis
If you carefully examine the joints of the jewelry, the color of the metal in these areas will be slightly different (it will be brighter). This is explained by the fact that jewelry is soldered with gold solder, which has a higher standard, because it melts more easily. This sign indicates that the gold is real.
- on rings - inside the jewelry (on rings with a stone or with figured additions, the sample is usually placed in the middle);
- on stud earrings - on a clasp or directly on the stem;
- on earrings with an English lock - on the outer or inner side of the bow;
- on bracelets and chains - mainly with a clasp;
Testing a gold item with vinegar is one of the most common and fastest methods. To do this, the product must be immersed in a container with vinegar for a short time (5 minutes). If the gold item darkens as a result, this is a sign of a fake.
Iodine is considered to be the best marker for gold. When a drop of iodine is applied to real gold, a chemical reaction occurs between them and a stain is formed. Apart from gold, no metal reacts with iodine. Sometimes to check it is necessary to thoroughly wipe the surface of a product made of such metal.
Remove the stain resulting from such a check

A hollow (blown) decoration weighs less than a solid (full-weight) one. This is its main advantage: the less gold it took to make the ring, the cheaper it is. The creation of hollow products has made them more accessible to buyers on a smaller budget. Newlyweds can choose rings that seem massive in appearance, but pay for them as if they were light.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8ppCrJY2tc
Another advantage of blown gold rings is that they are comfortable to wear and almost imperceptible on the finger. But there are also disadvantages:
- tendency to deformation. Hollow jewelry breaks easily if handled carelessly and can become deformed if worn carelessly;

Calculation of the approximate price of an engagement ring according to parameters
This program is designed to provide the user with the opportunity to obtain information about the dependence of the weight of the product on the size and other characteristics of the wedding ring.
The price of a typical product calculated on the basis of the results obtained does not constitute a price offer. This information characterizes only the price level of the workshop for the manufacture of a product that satisfies the design parameters.
The current version of the program only works in browser versions that support HTML5 markup rules for hypertext pages.
Changeable parameters
Wedding ring type
Depending on the type, different formulas are used to calculate the volume of the product. The simplest is the simple geometric type, when the cut of the shank of the ring is a rectangle, and all decorative elements are absent.
Wedding ring size
Size is the inner diameter of the ring in millimeters. The range of values is from 10 to 23. You can enter fractional numbers using the period symbol as a separator.
Wedding ring width
Width is the width of the rim (shank) of the ring in millimeters. The range of values is from 3 to 10. You can enter fractional numbers using the period symbol as a separator.
Wedding ring thickness
Thickness is the thickness of the rim (shank) of the ring in millimeters. The range of values is from 1.5 to 2.0. You can enter fractional numbers using the period symbol as a separator. A shank thinner than 1.5 mm may bend, but thicker than 2.0 mm will look bulky and put pressure on neighboring fingers.
Wedding ring metal
The weight of the ring and the cost of the material depend on the choice of metal alloy and its color. The program currently calculates only 3 parameter values: gold 585° (red), gold 750° (white) and silver 925°.
The complexity of the engagement ring
Complexity refers to the amount of labor required to make a ring. Depending on the complexity, the cost of the jeweler’s work changes in terms of the weight of the product in grams.
Constant values
Frenzy
When calculating the approximate cost of an engagement ring, it includes metal losses during casting of 9%.
Metal price
When calculating the approximate cost of an engagement ring, the estimated metal cost per gram established by the workshop is used.
Calculation principle
Currently the program calculates the ring weight only for a simple geometric model, i.e. The weight of the product is calculated using the formula of volume multiplied by the density of the metal, and based on the weight, the approximate price of the wedding ring is calculated using the internal formula.

999 = 24K
917 = 22K
833 = 20K
750 = 18 K
583 = 14 K
417 = 10 K
Thus, the purity of gold, expressed as parts per thousand, is equal to the carat number divided by 24 and multiplied by 1,000.

How to find out the weight of gold at home
It is not for nothing that each gold piece of jewelry has its own hallmark, this means that the weight is different everywhere. Therefore, before you find out the weight of the ring at home, it is advisable to know its sample.
Let's look at ways to weigh the 583 ring. Naturally, the exact weight can only be calculated with electronic scales, but there are times when you urgently need to find out how much a product weighs, and for this you can do the following:
- Build homemade scales;
- If the sample size of the product is known, then you can use Archimedes’ law and calculate the weight of gold. For this method you will need:
- Water;
- Glass and pan;
- Stick;
- Thread;
- Coins (preferably “USSR times”);
- A small gasket (it will be the basis of the scales);
- Glue plastic;
- Ruler (preferably wooden);
- Medium sized plastic measuring cup;
- Lid for jar;
In order to purchase high-quality gold jewelry, it is best to go to a jewelry store or online store and it is not advisable to buy products at home.
When choosing jewelry, look at its mark (it is different in each country). You can also read all the necessary information on the price tag:
- Weight;
- Try;
- Compound;
In fact, there are many places where it is possible to weigh gold. In all pawn shops and jewelry stores you can see electronic scales that can calculate the exact weight of an item. But many trust only themselves, and therefore most people are looking for an answer to the question: “How to weigh gold at home?”
If you need to find out the exact weight of the product, you can turn to a pawnshop or jewelry store for help, but you should make sure that no one is deceiving anyone. And in order not to take risks, you can spend money once and buy electronic scales. And then the question of how to determine the weight of gold at home will be removed.
- magnifying glass;
- laboratory scales with an accuracy class of at least 3 or 4;
- calipers;
- calico;
- superficial inspection;
- cleaning with a tool;
- applying one of the types of reagent;
- all kinds of scrapers;
- finely cut files;
- gold chloride – no more than twelve seconds;
- acid chemical reagent for the 375-585th and 750th samples - ten and twenty seconds, respectively;
- potassium iodide – from eight to twelve seconds.
4. Sample . The surface of the material is carefully checked with reagents, sometimes several at once, and is confirmed by the tabular instructions.
Samples are tested according to the following scheme:
- gold and other alloys with a precious metal content of up to 60% are treated with gold chloride, and after the corresponding standard with a reagent;
- 750 gold is tested with a standard reagent, but to detect handicraft fakes, you can limit yourself to gold chloride;
- alloys with gold from 80% are tested with a solution of potassium iodide.
Description of samples and their reactions to chemical compounds:
- 375th sample - a greenish or brownish stain from chlorine is obtained, and the drop itself is completely transparent;
- 500th - the chlorine stain turns brown, and the very drop is transparent and clean;
- 585th - a golden or yellowish stain from chlorine, and a light brown stain from a standard chemical reagent;
- 750th – the stain is often absent or barely noticeable;
- The 750th sample of the so-called “white gold” is a bright brown spot;
- 800th - potassium iodide produces a dark, rich red stain;
- vinegar – if the product tarnishes in vinegar, it is not real gold;
- glass - gold can be rubbed across the glass, no traces should remain, since gold is much softer;
- porcelain - if the gold strip remains yellow, then it is most likely gold;

- 958;
- 900;
- 916;
- 585;
- 750;
- 500;

How can you determine gold content at home?
How can you determine gold content at home?
- Purchase jewelry only from trusted stores;
- Carry out a sound check;
- Determine the level of strength;
- Treat with iodine and vinegar;

How to test gold at home

How to find out the hallmark of a gold product at home: Archimedes' method
To carry out the test, we will need electronic scales, a calculator, and water. The method is based on Archimedes' law, according to which we determine the density of the product and compare it with the standard. To calculate, we need to know the weight of the product and the weight of the displaced liquid. Then perform a mathematical operation and compare it with the table of metal densities. More similar, it is described in the video - how to determine real gold and its purity by water:
Precious metal density table:
metal | Silver | Gold 375, 500 | Gold 583, 585 | Gold 750 | Gold 999 |
density | 9 — 10 | 11 — 12 | 12 — 14 | 14 — 17 | 19,3 |

- old pendants, rings, rings;
- torn chains and mismatched earrings;
- items with missing inserts;
- dental crowns and denture discs;
- gold bullion;
- commemorative coins and their scrap;
- gold in nuggets;
- plates without names (imprints) of manufacturers;
- items for laboratory or industrial purposes;
- gold filings and shavings;

How to check whether a ring is gold or not: 7 methods for checking gold

Reading time: 7 min.
The demand for jewelry made from gold continues to grow steadily every year. Due to the impressive cost of products made from this metal, they are often counterfeited, and the likelihood of purchasing a product of poor quality is quite high. Many people often encounter situations throughout their lives when they need to know the quality of a gold accessory.
How to easily and quickly check a gold ring at home?
How to easily and quickly check a gold ring at home?
- on rings - inside the jewelry (on rings with a stone or with figured additions, the sample is usually placed in the middle);
- on stud earrings - on a clasp or directly on the stem;
- on earrings with an English lock - on the outer or inner side of the bow;
- on bracelets and chains - mainly with a clasp;

- tendency to deformation. Hollow jewelry breaks easily if handled carelessly and can become deformed if worn carelessly;

999 = 24K
917 = 22K
833 = 20K
750 = 18 K
583 = 14 K
417 = 10 K
Thus, the purity of gold, expressed as parts per thousand, is equal to the carat number divided by 24 and multiplied by 1,000.

How to find out the weight of gold at home
How to find out the weight of gold at home
Composition of gold
What determines the weight of gold?
It is not for nothing that each gold piece of jewelry has its own hallmark, this means that the weight is different everywhere. Therefore, before you find out the weight of the ring at home, it is advisable to know its sample.
Let's look at ways to weigh the 583 ring. Naturally, the exact weight can only be calculated with electronic scales, but there are times when you urgently need to find out how much a product weighs, and for this you can do the following:
- Build homemade scales;
- Water;
- Glass and pan;
- Stick;
- Thread;
- Coins (preferably “USSR times”);
- A small gasket (it will be the basis of the scales);
- Glue plastic;
- Ruler (preferably wooden);
- Medium sized plastic measuring cup;
- Lid for jar;
- Weight;
- Try;
- Compound;
- magnifying glass;
- laboratory scales with an accuracy class of at least 3 or 4;
- calipers;
- calico;
- superficial inspection;
- cleaning with a tool;
- applying one of the types of reagent;
- all kinds of scrapers;
- finely cut files;
- gold chloride – no more than twelve seconds;
- acid chemical reagent for the 375-585th and 750th samples - ten and twenty seconds, respectively;
- potassium iodide – from eight to twelve seconds.
4. Sample . The surface of the material is carefully checked with reagents, sometimes several at once, and is confirmed by the tabular instructions.
Samples are tested according to the following scheme:
- gold and other alloys with a precious metal content of up to 60% are treated with gold chloride, and after the corresponding standard with a reagent;
- 750 gold is tested with a standard reagent, but to detect handicraft fakes, you can limit yourself to gold chloride;
- alloys with gold from 80% are tested with a solution of potassium iodide.
Description of samples and their reactions to chemical compounds:
- 375th sample - a greenish or brownish stain from chlorine is obtained, and the drop itself is completely transparent;
- 500th - the chlorine stain turns brown, and the very drop is transparent and clean;
- 585th - a golden or yellowish stain from chlorine, and a light brown stain from a standard chemical reagent;
- 750th – the stain is often absent or barely noticeable;
- The 750th sample of the so-called “white gold” is a bright brown spot;
- 800th - potassium iodide produces a dark, rich red stain;
- vinegar – if the product tarnishes in vinegar, it is not real gold;
- glass - gold can be rubbed across the glass, no traces should remain, since gold is much softer;
- porcelain - if the gold strip remains yellow, then it is most likely gold;

- 958;
- 900;
- 916;
- 585;
- 750;
- 500;

How can you determine gold content at home?
- Purchase jewelry only from trusted stores;
- Carry out a sound check;
- Determine the level of strength;
- Treat with iodine and vinegar;
In order to do a basic check, it is not necessary to have a device or complex equipment for determining gold. It is enough to know the properties and characteristics of the metal. The noble substance has a rich yellow color. Alloys can be of different colors. White gold, which is the most common, contains nickel, silver and platinum.

Gold - we check for authenticity with water
How to check gold in a pawnshop
Precious metal density table:
metal | Silver | Gold 375, 500 | Gold 583, 585 | Gold 750 | Gold 999 |
density | 9 — 10 | 11 — 12 | 12 — 14 | 14 — 17 | 19,3 |

Return
What gold items will the new jewelry be made from?
Many private craftsmen or small jewelry companies work exclusively with the customer’s gold, since it is expensive for them to hold their own reserves of metal. But what kind of gold needs to be brought there for the jeweler to accept it 100%? A list of products accepted for work can be found on the websites of private companies or you can inquire about this directly from the master.
As a rule, the following gold items are accepted for melting down and subsequent production of new jewelry:
- old pendants, rings, rings;
- torn chains and mismatched earrings;
- items with missing inserts;
- dental crowns and denture discs;
- gold bullion;
- commemorative coins and their scrap;
- gold in nuggets;
- plates without names (imprints) of manufacturers;
- items for laboratory or industrial purposes;
- gold filings and shavings;
Return
What are you paying for?
There is no single cost that can be quoted for making a new item from your gold.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKAS5cAqZsE
Return

854
Reading time: 7 min.
The demand for jewelry made from gold continues to grow steadily every year. Due to the impressive cost of products made from this metal, they are often counterfeited, and the likelihood of purchasing a product of poor quality is quite high. Many people often encounter situations throughout their lives when they need to know the quality of a gold accessory.
How to easily and quickly check a gold ring at home?
- on rings - inside the jewelry (on rings with a stone or with figured additions, the sample is usually placed in the middle);
- on stud earrings - on a clasp or directly on the stem;
- on earrings with an English lock - on the outer or inner side of the bow;
- on bracelets and chains - mainly with a clasp;
Testing a gold item with vinegar is one of the most common and fastest methods. To do this, the product must be immersed in a container with vinegar for a short time (5 minutes). If the gold item darkens as a result, this is a sign of a fake.
Iodine is considered to be the best marker for gold. When a drop of iodine is applied to real gold, a chemical reaction occurs between them and a stain is formed. Apart from gold, no metal reacts with iodine. Sometimes to check it is necessary to thoroughly wipe the surface of a product made of such metal.
Remove the stain resulting from such a check

A hollow (blown) decoration weighs less than a solid (full-weight) one. This is its main advantage: the less gold it took to make the ring, the cheaper it is. The creation of hollow products has made them more accessible to buyers on a smaller budget. Newlyweds can choose rings that seem massive in appearance, but pay for them as if they were light.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8ppCrJY2tc
Another advantage of blown gold rings is that they are comfortable to wear and almost imperceptible on the finger. But there are also disadvantages:
- tendency to deformation. Hollow jewelry breaks easily if handled carelessly and can become deformed if worn carelessly;

999 = 24K
917 = 22K
833 = 20K
750 = 18 K
583 = 14 K
417 = 10 K
Thus, the purity of gold, expressed as parts per thousand, is equal to the carat number divided by 24 and multiplied by 1,000.

How to find out the weight of gold at home
It is not for nothing that each gold piece of jewelry has its own hallmark, this means that the weight is different everywhere. Therefore, before you find out the weight of the ring at home, it is advisable to know its sample.
Let's look at ways to weigh the 583 ring. Naturally, the exact weight can only be calculated with electronic scales, but there are times when you urgently need to find out how much a product weighs, and for this you can do the following:
- Build homemade scales;
- If the sample size of the product is known, then you can use Archimedes’ law and calculate the weight of gold. For this method you will need:
- Water;
- Glass and pan;
- Stick;
- Thread;
- Coins (preferably “USSR times”);
- A small gasket (it will be the basis of the scales);
- Glue plastic;
- Ruler (preferably wooden);
- Medium sized plastic measuring cup;
- Lid for jar;
In order to purchase high-quality gold jewelry, it is best to go to a jewelry store or online store and it is not advisable to buy products at home.
When choosing jewelry, look at its mark (it is different in each country). You can also read all the necessary information on the price tag:
- Weight;
- Try;
- Compound;
Gold jewelry, like many others, requires special care. Many people don’t understand this and never take off the gold, and then complain that the jewelry is worn out and doesn’t look as chic as it did on the first day.
Fortunately, gold jewelry can be easily cleaned, all you need is:
- Soap solution and a brush (you can use an unnecessary toothbrush) to clean earrings and rings. Brush gently and do not overdo it.
- Soap solution and bottle for chains and bracelets. Simply place the jewelry in the bottle of liquid and shake well.
- Cologne and a cotton swab for jewelry with precious stones.
To make your jewelry shine again, like on the first day of purchase, you can simply wipe the jewelry with onion juice.
When buying gold jewelry, you should always pay attention to the smallest details so as not to need repairs in the future. If you need to find out the weight of the jewelry, you can contact pawnshops or jewelry stores, but it is better to weigh the gold at home, because it is really possible. Take care of your products and then they will always look like new and will last a long time.
