How to close a chain-link fence: decoration and decoration
An ordinary mesh made of metal as a section of fencing looks dull and cheap, leaving the entire garden area visible to strangers. But if you show your imagination, you will be able to cover the chain-link fence with interesting compositions from natural, artificial materials, flowers and turn it into a real decorative element.
We recommend that you read the article: “Installing a chain-link fence.”
What materials and plants are best to use?
To decorate a structure with your own hands, you don’t have to buy expensive jewelry. You can even decorate the fence with improvised means, spending a little time and patience.
Let's look at the most popular ways to decorate a chain-link fence.
Users often search for:
- Fence made of stones in a gabion mesh
- Gitter mesh fence for a summer residence
climbing plants
A favorite solution for many dacha owners. If you choose the right colors and follow the planting conditions, within a month you will receive a living green wall that will hide the area from prying eyes and fill the estate with bright colors.
But such a temporary fence will create a shadow, therefore, if the fence is installed on the border with a neighbor’s property, it is better to ask the neighbors for consent in advance in order to avoid misunderstandings in the future.
This fact must be taken into account when planting cultivated plants near buildings, since constant shade can slow down their growth.
Preference should be given to annual plants - they grow faster. If you plant them in May, then by the end of June you will already have a blooming green wall.
Popular climbing varieties include:
- morning glory;
- bindweed;
- clematis;
- ivy;
- hop;
- campsis;
- wild grapes.
The photo below shows an example of flowering circus acrobats, which can also be used to decorate a chain-link mesh.
The hedge will remain in place until mid-September, provided there is a dry and warm start to autumn.
Camouflage mesh
An interesting idea to cover a military-style structure with a camouflage net. Although it is associated with camouflaging military installations, summer residents often use it.
This is explained by the advantages of the material:
- Durability. The mesh can be used for more than one season and its appearance will not be affected.
- Transmission capacity of light and wind. Materials with different percentages of shading and density are available for sale.
- Fast installation. Easily tensioned from above the chain-link. One person can do it in a matter of minutes.
- Different mesh costs. Allows you to choose the material that suits the price.
A more durable camouflage net is made on a nylon (acrylic) base. Cheap types and without any basis at all.
The color range ranges from richly bright tones of green to calm shades of brown and marsh.

The only caveat is that not every owner wants to decorate a fence in a military style.

Do-it-yourself chain-link fence: installation details
This time we will learn how to build a chain-link fence with our own hands for your country house. But first of all, let's understand what this material is, often used for the construction of fences. This mesh is a product made of metal wire, which is made by screwing pieces of wire into one another, making the turn flat.
The wire for these purposes is taken from low-carbon steel. It will not be difficult to build a fence and other fencing for a cottage from a chain-link mesh with your own hands: the main thing is to know the technology and a few tricks.
A fence like this is chosen for a cottage for several reasons - ease of installation, low cost of material, high versatility of the mesh, as well as durability and reliability. And if someone is confused by the appearance of such a fence, then you should know that a chain-link fence as a fence for a country house can be supplemented with a hedge planted along the fence.
On the other hand, such a fence for a cottage will allow you to fence off the territory, but at the same time not be tightly closed off from your neighbors: the owners of nearby houses will be able to appreciate your flower beds and beds, and you will have more light on the site than if you install a solid fence. Such fencing for a country house will last for many years: galvanized mesh does not lose its appearance even due to rain and other external influences.
Do-it-yourself chain-link fence: varieties
It’s worth mentioning right away that you can make a chain-link fence with your own hands in two ways, which determine the type of fencing. So, a chain-link fence can be tensioned or sectional, and you can install both types with your own hands.
How are these two types different? The names speak for themselves: a tension fence is, in fact, a solid fabric that is stretched along the perimeter of the site and secured to special support posts. Whereas the sectional one, accordingly, consists of separate pieces (sections). The mesh for such a fence is fixed in metal frames, creating original panels from which the fence is mounted.
There is no significant difference between these two types. The only thing is that installing and dismantling tension fencing with your own hands is much easier. In addition, it is more suitable for combining with hedges.
How to assemble a chain-link fence with your own hands: materials for the tension version
First of all, let's look at a tension fence made of chain-link mesh with our own hands, or rather, the technology of its installation and materials. For a chain-link fence, we will need the actual mesh in rolls, support posts, fasteners: we select all the materials so that we can do it ourselves.
Support posts for such a fence can be made of wood, concrete or metal. The latter are, of course, preferable. In this case, you can use pipes measuring 40x60x2. Although it is also possible to use larger pillars - it’s whatever you want.
For the fence, it is best to buy a galvanized chain-link mesh with cells 5x5 centimeters. Although, a different size can be chosen. The galvanized option is most preferable due to the fact that such a fence will not need to be tinted annually or treated in any other way. The mesh will serve for years and will not lose its appearance. Typically, such mesh is sold in rolls, containing up to 10 meters of material. The width of the mesh is usually from one and a half to two meters.
Special metal plugs, staples, hooks or plates can be used as fastening elements.
In addition to the actual materials for the fence itself, you will also need materials for installing the posts, and these are concrete, reinforcement (6-8 mm in diameter), and plugs for the posts.
How to install a chain-link fence with your own hands: tension option?
Answering the question of how to install a tension fence from a chain-link mesh with your own hands, first of all, let’s focus on calculating the materials. In order not to buy an extra chain-link fence for the fence, which we are going to install with our own hands, we need to calculate the perimeter of the fence in advance.
To do this, you need to first walk around the area along the perimeter of the future fence, and you need to drive in pegs in those places where you will have support posts (usually at a distance of about 2.5-3 m). Afterwards, a cord is pulled over the pegs, in such a way that the fence will be installed. When the entire perimeter is covered by the lace, remove it and calculate the footage. This figure will be the number of required meters of the grid, and the number of driven pegs will be the support posts.
When calculating the footage of the mesh, do not forget to make allowances for overlaps at the joints and for the posts (which have a larger diameter than the pegs).
When the material has been calculated and purchased, installation can begin. The steps for installing the fence will be as follows:
- First we make holes for the posts: they can be drilled or dug by hand. We fill the bottom of all prepared holes with sand or crushed stone in a 5-centimeter layer.
Under corner posts, holes are usually made 30 centimeters deeper so that they can be secured more securely. After all, they will bear the main burden.
- Next we prepare the columns: they need to be primed and painted.
- The corner posts are installed first: they are placed in holes and filled with concrete.
- After a cord is pulled over the installed pillars, we level the remaining pillars to the horizon: to do this, we install them in the pits and, if necessary, increase the depth of the pits.
- We concrete all the pillars and leave them for a while. Further work can only be done when the concrete has completely hardened.
- We begin the installation of the mesh itself. We weld hooks or plates to the first and subsequent posts on which the mesh will be attached.
If you do not have the opportunity to use a welding machine, then the mesh can be secured with wire of sufficient thickness, although this option is not very reliable.
- Next, we unwind the roll and stretch the mesh, securing it to the posts.
You should not stretch the mesh as a whole roll: it will be difficult to achieve the required tension in this way; it is better to attach the mesh in separate pieces to the posts.
- At the end of one roll, you should remove the outermost element and bring it together with the beginning of a new roll: screw the outermost elements of the rolls together at the joint.
How to install a chain-link fence with your own hands: sectional method?
A do-it-yourself sectional type chain-link fence will also be quite easy to install, although the technology here is slightly different and will take more time. To install a chain-link fence, you will need to prepare the sections yourself and then install them. Here you can’t do without a welding machine.
Actually, the installation of pillars here is made from the same materials and in the same way as when arranging a tension fence. The only thing is that the fastening strength of the pillars should be slightly higher: a greater load will be placed on them.
An important stage is the installation of the sections themselves. First, from a metal corner (the dimensions of which can be from 30x4 to 40x5 millimeters) we make a frame (frame) for the sections. To calculate the dimensions of the frame, you need to measure the height of the pillars and subtract 10-15 centimeters from it. Thus, we will get the height of the section frame, and the length will be the same as the distance between the pillars minus 10 cm. Next, knowing the dimensions, we weld the corners in the shape of a rectangle.
You can make the height of the section equal to the width of the mesh, or you can trim off the excess using a grinder: here you can decide for yourself how it will be more convenient for you.
To install the mesh into the frame, you must first stretch a rod with a cross-section of 4-5 millimeters along the outermost row and weld it to the vertical post of our frame. After this, the same rods are pulled into the lower and upper rows of the mesh, then the mesh is well stretched, after which the rods are welded to the horizontal corners.
Next, we also stretch a rod into the second edge of the mesh and weld it to the free post. As a result, we will have a frame with a mesh, that is, a ready-made section for the fence. Using this method, we produce the required number of sections, which we calculate along the perimeter of the site.
To secure the sections to the poles, we first weld special metal strips to them horizontally, which have the following dimensions: 15-30 cm long, 5 cm wide and 5 mm cross-section. These strips are attached at a distance of 20-30 centimeters from the bottom and top of the pillars. Next, we install the section and weld it to pre-fixed metal strips on the posts.
When all sections are welded, the entire fence must be primed and painted.

How to make a chain-link fence
Chain-link mesh is perfect for organizing a lightweight fence. It does not darken the beds or block the view of the area, and is easy to install without special skills. Let's look at the types of chain-link and how to install it.
Which chain link to choose
Before choosing one of the types of mesh, determine the expected service life of the fence; this parameter will be one of the determining factors.
- Chain-link made of black wire is the most short-lived - it begins to rust after the first rainfall, and after 2-3 years it becomes completely unusable. To extend its life, you can use coloring compounds or liquid rubber. It is the cheapest option for installing temporary fencing.
- Fencing made of galvanized wire is visually attractive and lasts a long time. It costs a little more than untreated, but does not require additional care.
- Metal chain-link with a polymer coating is becoming a sales leader - it is preferred due to its attractive appearance, long service life and ease of processing.
Installing a chain-link mesh with your own hands
There are 2 options for installing a fence:
- Tension fencing is often used as a temporary fencing.
- Sectional is installed for a long time.
Installation of a tensile chain-link fence
The process is roughly divided into 2 stages:
- Marking and installation of pillars;
- Mesh fastening.
Stage 1: installing pillars
Let's perform a few simple steps:
- Wooden pegs mark the locations of the support posts. Their step should be 2-2.5 meters, we also install pegs in the corners of the perimeter.
- We make recesses for the posts: using a garden drill, we dig a hole with a diameter slightly larger than the size of the post. The depth depends on the density of the soil - the looser the soil, the deeper the hole, on average 80-120 mm. We fill the bottom with a layer of sand about 10 cm.
- We prepare the steel pipe in advance: we weld loops for mounting hooks to it, 3-4 pieces per post, depending on the height of the mesh, remove rust, scale, and oil stains. We prime and paint.
- We install the pipes: we put them into the holes and hammer them 10-20 cm until they are stable. We align all the racks in height. Fill the holes with concrete.
Sometimes they dig a shallow hole and drive the pipe to a greater depth. Concreting is necessary in any case - the stone fixes the pillar regardless of the movement of the soil and changes in its temperature and humidity.
Stage 2: how to stretch chain-link mesh onto a fence
To fix the mesh we use hooks or wire.
- We take the rolled up roll and place its free edge against the first support. We fix it with wire or hooks to the loops in 3-4 places. You should not place the net close to the ground - this will quickly become entangled with grass. It is optimal to leave a gap of 10-15 cm.
- We roll out the mesh in the direction of the next support, stretch it and fix it on the hooks again. To ensure uniform tension and prevent subsequent sagging of the fabric, stretch strings of thick wire along the upper and lower edges and weld them to the posts.
- We also work with the rest of the supports.
Installation of a sectional fence
The design is more complex; such fences are often installed in areas with large differences in elevation.
For a sectional fence, we prepare the same posts as for a tension fence, only instead of hinges we weld metal plates of at least 150x50x5 mm.
We mark the pillars in the same way using pegs, only we reinforce the corner ones with a sand and gravel cushion, since they will take a higher load.
Making a frame for the sections
We take the corners, cut them to a length equal to the distance between the posts minus 20 cm. We determine the height taking into account the width of the mesh or the height of the post minus 20 cm. We weld the parts in sections, clean off the scale.
How to attach a chain-link mesh to a frame
We roll out the mesh and cut it to the section sizes using a grinder. We thread the reinforcement along the outer rows.
Now we put the workpiece into the corner section from the inside. We weld the top rod, stretch the fabric and weld the bottom row. We fix the side bars. The section is ready. Be sure to clean off the scale.
Fence installation
We apply the finished sections to the racks and weld them to the prepared plates.
Every 2 adjacent sections should be located at the same level - this will give the fence a neat appearance.
Now the fence can be painted with a protective compound.
Using the proposed algorithm, you can create a fence from all types of chain-link mesh of any width.

How to cut a chain-link mesh to height
Apr 6 by admin
Chain-link mesh is an ideal material for constructing a lightweight fence or fence. The sun's rays pass through it perfectly, so it can often be found when fencing beds and gardens.
It is also often used to divide the territories of neighboring areas. Installing a fence using chain-link mesh does not require special knowledge and skills. In order to install such a fence, you just need to study the technology of its construction.
And everyone can handle the construction itself.
Chainlink mesh - what kind of “fruit”
Chain-link is a metal construction raw material, durable and inexpensive when compared with wood or corrugated sheeting. You can purchase such a mesh at any hardware store. It is produced in a roll. This is one of the advantages of purchasing such material; it is very convenient to transport.
There is no need to hire specialized construction crews to install a chain-link fence. Even a schoolboy can build it. And this can be done in two ways: sectional installation and the material tension method.
The advantages of this material include the following qualities:
- this is an inexpensive material.
- no special skills are needed to build a fence from it. Easy and simple to build.
- the area is not hidden from the sun's rays.
- The chain-link has a long service life.
- To decorate such a fence, you can let climbing plants grow along it.
- Having installed such a fence, you will not need to repair it, tint it, etc.
Everything would be fine, but such material also has disadvantages:
- It's hard to hide your privacy behind a net. To do this, it needs to be decorated, for example, with climbing plants.
- no soundproofing properties.
- If you install non-galvanized mesh, it will rust quite quickly.
What materials need to be purchased, drawing
- The chain-link network itself.
- Wooden, iron or concrete support pillars.
- Tools you will use to tighten the mesh. They can be used, for example, fittings or clamps.
- A level that will help you check the evenness of the structure.
- Tape measure for measuring grid parameters.
- Primer with anti-corrosion properties.
- Paint for painting support posts.
- Cement mortar.
- Crushed stone and sand.
- Welding machine.
- For the sectional method of installing a fence, you will also need steel corners measuring 4x4 centimeters.
schematic indication of the elements of a chain-link fence
Pay attention to the choice of support posts. The most convenient pipes are made of metal with a square cross-section. There are pipes on which the manufacturer himself has already welded hooks for the mesh. Some people use old pipes onto which they weld these hooks themselves.
Calculation of the required amount of materials
Most often, a net 150 centimeters wide with cells of 4–5 centimeters is used to construct a fence. The length of a standard roll is 10 meters. To prevent sagging of the fence, support posts are installed at a distance of 200–250 centimeters from each other. Therefore, five posts are needed for one roll. The support posts should stick out above the ground 100 millimeters above the chain-link mesh. They should go 1/3 of their length into the ground.
Now it is clear that to build, for example, a 30-meter fence, you need to purchase 3 rolls of chain-link and 16 posts 230–150 centimeters long. Each post must have at least three hooks. If they are on the poles initially, then no problem. And if they are not there, then they need to be welded. Therefore, we multiply 16 pillars by 3 hooks for each, we get 48 hooks. They need to be purchased and attached to the poles using a welding machine.
If the fence is planned to be sectional, then the number of sections is set based on the fact that the length of one is 200–250 centimeters, the width is 150 centimeters. Knowing these parameters, you can calculate the required number of metal corners, which, by the way, also have recommended requirements. It is most convenient to use 4x4 centimeter corners, the thickness of which is 5 millimeters.
We install a tension chain-link fence
A tension fence can be installed much faster than a sectional one and will be less expensive. To erect a fence, you just need to mark the area, prepare holes for support posts, install these posts and mount the mesh on hooks. Let's look at the process step by step.
Fastening the chain-link mesh
- First of all, it is necessary to mark the previously cleared area. First, mark the places where the outer support pillars will be located. Drive in pegs in these places. Stretch a rope between them 100 millimeters above the ground, which will serve as a kind of guide for the intermediate posts. If the fence is not straight, but broken, then you need to mark the corners of the breaks with pegs and connect each one in turn with a rope to the adjacent peg. Using a rope guide, drive pegs in the places where the intermediate posts will be installed with equal spacing equal to the width of the run.
Installation of a tension chain-link fence
- The next stage is preparing holes for support pillars. For convenience, it is recommended to use a drill. You need to make holes in the places where you installed the pegs. Their depth should be 0.8–1.2 meters, and their diameter should be slightly larger than the diameter of the support posts. The bottom of each pit must be thoroughly compacted and covered with a sand and crushed stone floor (this must also be compacted).
- Now he is installing support pillars. But they must first be prepared: clean off oil stains and remove rust, sand and weld the hooks if there are none. Before welding the hooks, the places for them need to be cleaned and scale removed. Then the pillars need to be primed and painted. After they have dried, they can be immersed in the ground. Using a building level, install them level and secure them with spacers. Pour the cement mortar into the hole, periodically piercing it with a reinforcing rod to remove air bubbles.
- Now we attach the chain-link mesh. To do this, you do not need to unwind the entire roll. Place it in a vertical position, attach it to the first support post and attach the roll to the hooks. Leave 100–150 millimeters from the ground to the bottom edge of the mesh. You should not attach it close to the ground so that the meshes of the net are not entangled by grass and debris does not accumulate.
- Carefully unwind the roll to the second support post. Place the roll against it and pull the net. For uniform tension, thread a steel rod 150 centimeters long into the upper cells of the chain-link roll. Doing this work with an assistant is much more convenient. For example, you will pull the net, and the second person will put it on the hooks. Thus, the mesh is stretched over all support pillars.
Even if you have stretched the mesh really well, it will still sag over time. To avoid this, you simply need to pass reinforcing wire or long steel rods through the meshes of the chain-link. They must be threaded through the cells across the entire perimeter of the fence, leaving 50–70 millimeters from the top edge of the mesh, and welded to the support posts.
Some people also thread such wire along the lower edge of the chain-link 200 millimeters from the surface of the ground.
DIY sectional fence
Sectional chain-link fence
First you need to mark and install the support posts. The process is practically no different from the previous one. Is it possible that it is not hooks that are attached to the posts, but special metal plates measuring 150x50 millimeters and 5 millimeters thick. They must be welded one at a time on top and bottom of the support column, retreating 200 millimeters from the edge.
Installation diagram of a chain-link fence
- First, the fence frame is assembled. Determine at what distance the support posts are located from each other and subtract 150–200 millimeters (the width of the frame) from this number. The height of the section will be the same as the width of the chain-link mesh. Cut the steel angles to the required size and weld them into a rectangular section. After this, remove the scale. Sand the frame inside and out.
Installation of chain-link on the frame
- Now prepare the network. Place the roll of mesh on the ground, unwind 200–250 centimeters from it and carefully cut a piece using a grinder. It is necessary to thread reinforcement bars along the outermost row of cells on all sides. Don't connect them to each other.
- We assemble the sections. Lay the net on the frame and weld the top reinforcement rod to the inside corner of the frame. Pull the chain-link well and weld the lower reinforcement to the frame. Secure the side bars. The section is ready. Now it needs to be raised to a vertical position, brought to the support posts and welded to the metal plates.
- Secure all sections in this way. Then cover them with primer and paint.
Sectional chain-link fence
When welding a section to the supports, try to place the welding points at the same level. Even the most minimal deviation will be clearly visible and the aesthetic appearance will be lost.
self-installation of a chain-link fence
Self-installation of such a fence is a simple process. Now you know it. This type of fence is cheap, beautiful (if decorated), easy to install, and durable. In general, what many of us need. Good luck!

Do-it-yourself chain-link fence
Have you decided to make a fence around your plot at the dacha or country house? Or do you live in a private sector and want to make a fence? Then this article is for you!
In it you will read about one popular and, at the same time, simple and cheap option that is used by many. We are talking about installing a fence using a chain-link mesh.
You will read about how to install such a fence, how to choose a high-quality and reliable mesh, as well as about preparatory work and much more in this article.
General information
Before moving on to practice, you need to understand this issue a little and learn the theory.
So, what is a chain-link mesh? What is this material?
It is worth noting that on the modern market of goods you can find chain-link mesh in three versions:
- made of ferrous metal or non-galvanized;
- galvanized;
- plasticized.
Non-galvanized chain-link mesh can be used to install only a temporary fence or garden. Such a mesh is susceptible to corrosion and after a short period of time it will already have an unattractive appearance and will rot in places.
This mesh will last you a maximum of 2-3 years.
Galvanized chain-link mesh is the most widespread and is preferred by most buyers. A fence made of galvanized mesh will serve you for quite a long time and will maintain a decent appearance.
Plasticized mesh mesh can be of different colors and mesh sizes, and it has excellent anti-corrosion properties. However, such a mesh is rarely used due to its high cost.
To summarize, I would like to say that when we talk in the future about the construction of a chain-link fence in this article, we will by default mean the galvanized version of the mesh.
Step 1: preparation and calculation of the required material
- A standard roll contains 10 m of mesh. For a fence, it is better to use a roll 1.5 meters wide.
- In order to avoid sagging of the mesh, it is better to install the posts in increments of 2-2.5 meters. That is, for one roll of mesh you need to count no more than 5 posts.
- Each post requires 3 hooks.
- Crushed stone or brick, sand, concrete. It is better to calculate how much is needed on the spot.
Step 2: preparing the area
It is necessary to clear the area and mark the places where the pillars will be located.
Step 3: preparing holes in the ground
Dig holes in the ground. The holes for the posts should ideally be more than 1.2 in depth; Insert the post into the recess.
Step 4: installation of poles
Fill in a layer of crushed stone and compact it; you must also add sand and compact it again. Fill the recess with a layer of mortar made of sand, cement and crushed stone as a filler;
It is worth remembering that the support must be set correctly in level and not be skewed. This can be controlled using a level or, better yet, a plumb line.
Important! The recess must be good, otherwise, later, under the weight, these posts may become skewed and the fence will look like something incomprehensible.
Step 5: installation of the chain-link mesh
You need to do the following:
- you have installed posts that will serve as supports, and they hold securely;
- now take a roll of chain-link mesh and begin to unwind it and at the same time tighten it;
- tension the mesh, after which it must be attached to special hooks or jumpers on the support. This can be done using clamps and simply wrapping the jumper.
- Thick wire or small reinforcement must be threaded into the very first row of the mesh so that the mesh does not sag in the future.
It is worth noting that it is better to place the supports at a distance of no more than one and a half to two meters from each other. This is necessary so that you can build a fence from the mesh tautly, and not so that it dangles.
There is nothing complicated here, but in this process you cannot do without an assistant who will help build the fence: stretch the mesh while you fasten it, for example.
It is worth noting that the sectional method of fencing installation is much more expensive than the frameless fastening method described above.
But this option provides reliable and durable fastening of the chain-link mesh, as well as a more attractive appearance.
A large amount of material will be required, and additional welding work will be carried out, which will cost you a pretty penny, but the end result is worth it.
The technology for installing a fence using a sectional method includes the following stages of work:
Stage 1: preparation of the sections themselves
It is necessary to weld rectangular frames into which pieces of chain-link mesh will be attached in the future. This definitely requires skill and a thorough approach. These frames should be rectangular and have 90 degree corners as otherwise they will have an unsightly appearance.
Stage 2: installation of supports
Here everything is the same as in the previous method, only now the distance between the pillars will be equal to the size of the section
Stage 3: installation of sections
They can be fastened in two ways: tightly welded or provide for the possibility of removing these sections in the future.
Then you need to make special fastenings. It is worth noting that the chain-link mesh must be inserted into the sections before you install the sections themselves and attach them to the supports.
This method, of course, will take more time and is more expensive than frameless fastening, but it also has its advantages and is therefore widely used.
Should I paint my chain link fence or otherwise decorate it?
It is worth saying that a chain-link fence has an unsightly appearance and someone may want to decorate it. How can this be done?
Of course, you can paint the chain-link mesh and this makes sense in several cases:
- you bought non-galvanized mesh and painting will give it anti-corrosion properties;
- you just want to practice and create something original.
You can buy plasticized chain-link mesh from the very beginning, which comes in a variety of colors and has a slightly more attractive appearance.
And the second option to decorate a chain-link fence is landscaping . Many people decide in this way to hide the unsightly chain-link fence out of sight. And that's a great idea.
Such a fence allows air to flow well and does not shade your site, so you can safely plant various kinds of trees, shrubs and flowers near it.
There are many landscaping options:
- the use of evergreen shrubs: cypresses, thujas and the like;
- ivy and other plants that spread all over the fence;
- various flowers, fruit bushes and even trees.
The advantages of such a fence
Many people decide to use this simple and fairly cheap option rather than erect two-meter fences, and this is understandable.
In addition, a chain-link fence has a number of other advantages:
- low cost, which allows you to use it to fence even a large area;
- installation is quite simple and does not take much time, so if you need practical fencing in a short time, then this option is for you;
- At the same time, the mesh fence is quite durable and will last a long time;
- if you bought a galvanized mesh or additionally opened it with paint, then it will not lose its normal appearance even after several years;
- The chain link can be reused if you need to move the fence or fence to another location. Dismantling will not take much time, and the mesh will be in good condition;
- such a fence does not shade the area and does not prevent fresh air from entering the area.
Now let’s move on directly to the process of installing such a fence.
The first thing I would like to note is that there are two methods of installing such a fence, namely frameless and sectional . We will now talk about each of these methods in more detail.
Let's sum it up
A chain-link fence is a cheap but practical option , especially when it comes to temporary fencing. But even for permanent fencing, such a fence is perfect. It is quickly installed and will serve you for a long time.
There are several options for both the chain-link fence itself and ways to install such a fence, so choose what suits your finances. But remember that the stingy pays twice, so the cheapest option is not always the best.
The tips from this article will be of great help to you in DIY installation. Good luck to you and may everything you plan work out!

How to cut chain-link mesh crosswise
Chain-link mesh is perfect for organizing a lightweight fence. It does not darken the beds or block the view of the area, and is easy to install without special skills. Let's look at the types of chain-link and how to install it.
How to close a chain-link fence: proven and original methods
If your house or summer cottage is surrounded by a fence made of chain-link mesh, then its appearance is probably far from ideal. But the situation can be corrected if such a fence is somehow camouflaged. How to cover a chain-link fence so that it fulfills its main functions and looks stylish and attractive? There are a few different ways to do this. |
Should I close the fence?
Is it really worth closing the fence? After all, it performs its main functions, that is, it provides fencing for the site. But you should still decide on camouflage in some cases:
- You are bothered by direct sunlight falling unimpeded on your site, and you want to shade the space.
- You want to hide from prying eyes or from the eyes of neighbors. And this is quite logical, because no one wants to constantly be in sight and be in tension associated with the openness of space.
- You want to protect your site from dust or debris coming from the street or from neighbors. And this is also rational and appropriate.
- Your house or cottage is located in an open space, and you want to protect your property from the wind. This is especially true if you have a vegetable garden or garden with fragile plants.
- You are simply not happy with the appearance of your fence. Indeed, chain-link mesh may seem boring, gloomy and completely unattractive.
So, how can you cover a chain-link fence? We offer several ways:
Shading networks
They are usually used to create areas in the shade. They are used to make light canopies, curtains or canopies. But such a network can also be used to disguise the chain-link. By the way, the degree of shading can be different, so you can either almost completely protect the area from the sun’s rays or simply create a light shadow. Typically this indicator is measured as a percentage: from 30% to 90%.
Camouflage mesh
This method is similar to the previous one, but has several features. The first is important for many summer residents. The holes will allow diffused light to enter, which is important for some plants. The second feature is appearance.
Not everyone will like the camouflage coloring, but military personnel, including former ones, will certainly appreciate it. By the way, there are nets with an acrylic base (they are more durable and more securely attached to the fence) or without it (the latter are much cheaper).
There are also several color options: from contrasting and rich combinations with green shades to calmer and more restrained tones, such as marsh or brown.
Original decor
If your goal is not so much to completely cover your fence, but to make its appearance more attractive, then you can decorate the fence in an interesting way. Moreover, if you show imagination, you can make the landscape design of your site stylish, original and bright.
If desired, you can decorate the fence with dense threads, creating entire embroidered patterns on the mesh. Moreover, if you want to shade the grid as much as possible, then first create a background, and then start creating drawings on it. The process is long and labor-intensive, but the result will please you and your neighbors.
You can also use rope, satin ribbons, various paintings and other details for decoration.
Artificial needles
It is sold in the form of wire, decorated with artificial soft spruce or pine needles. Thanks to the rich green shades and interesting appearance, the fence will definitely be bright and original. In addition, by choosing this option, you will provide good shading and partial protection from the wind.
But fixing artificial needles on a chain-link is not an easy task. This process is painstaking and very lengthy. It’s also worth remembering that low-quality material can fade greatly in the sun in just one summer season.
Some characteristics and qualities may also deteriorate due to the vagaries of the weather, such as rain, snow, strong gusts of wind or frost.
Corrugated sheet
Of course, it would be much more rational to initially make a fence from such material, but if you purchased a plot of land with a ready-made fence and do not want to dismantle it, then you can simply fasten the sheets to the existing fence.
They can be secured using strong wire. Make several paired holes in the lower and upper parts, stretch pieces of wire through them and secure them in one of the chain-link cells.
Moreover, the sheets need to be fixed from the inside of the fence, that is, directly on your site.
If you know where you can get a lot of reed stems, then such a simple, accessible and inexpensive (or rather, free) material can also be used to decorate a chain-link fence. And it will look very original and stylish. First you need to process the reeds.
To do this, trim off all excess, but so that all stems are approximately the same length. Although if the sizes are different, it will look more creative. Now you need to secure the individual elements to the chain-link mesh. This can be done using rope, thick thread or wire.
And to make the hedge even brighter, you can paint the stems in different colors or paint a ready-made decorative fence.
Bamboo, reed or reed mats
This method of camouflaging a fence is similar to the previous one, but is simpler, since it is much more convenient to attach ready-made canvases than individual stems, and the fence will look even neater. Among other things, such a coating is resistant to external influences (due to special processing) and is more durable, since it usually consists of several layers of stems. It is most convenient to attach such mats using self-tapping screws or wire.
Previously, such fences were very popular, because they were made from affordable materials. And you may well revive such a tradition. But be prepared for the fact that the work will be painstaking and difficult, because each branch or small bunch will need to be secured to a mesh, for example, with strong wire.
Polycarbonate
This is a relatively inexpensive and fairly durable material that is used to make canopies, light gazebos or fences. It can be either translucent and transmitting light, or opaque.
There are also several shade options available, so you can make the fence fit perfectly into the landscape design of the site, match all buildings, or be bright and contrasting, in general, the way you want it to be. But the most common, calm and universal colors are blue, brown, beige, white and green.
Polycarbonate sheets can be secured to fence posts using self-tapping screws. If the space between the supports is large, then additional installation of metal profiles may be required, otherwise the material sheet will be damaged due to sudden gusts of wind.
Hedge
To make it, you can use any climbing plants, for example, bindweed, grapes, and so on. You just need to choose the appropriate option, plant in advance (usually it is done in late spring), provide support for the stems (although the chain-link itself can play its role) and just wait. Some bindweeds grow very quickly, so already in mid-summer you can enjoy a green hedge. But this method of disguise has both pros and cons.
So, in the fall the plant will darken and wither, so the appearance of the fence will greatly deteriorate. In addition, bindweeds can suffer from sudden gusts of wind. And they will not provide protection from the vagaries of the weather, although they will create good shading and protect you from prying eyes. And, of course, it’s just beautiful!
Choose the most suitable method and disguise your chain-link fence, transforming it beyond recognition!

Do-it-yourself chain-link fence: installation and design
Chainlink fencing is the most common type of fencing and has remained popular for over a century. Thanks to it, you can separate a transformer booth, a sports ground and other objects. If necessary, such a fence is very easy to install by a person who does not have experience and a sufficient number of tools. Despite its transparency, it is often used when fencing one’s own home.
Advantages and disadvantages
Pros:
- Low cost.
- Ease of installation.
- Practicality.
- Reliability.
- Visual enlargement of the area.
This type of fence is widespread due to the fact that the material itself and its installation will cost a small amount, and even large areas are fenced.
The material is easier to deliver to the installation site; it is rolled into a roll or individual pieces are welded to the frames. If necessary, the mesh can be easily rolled back and stored. Installed on any type of soil.
Despite its lightness and weightlessness, chain-link fences are very difficult to damage. To cut it, you need special tools and a lot of time. Jumping over the fence is also not easy, because the material at the tops can be twisted like barbed wire. The structure itself can last more than 20 or even 30 years.
Due to the fact that the fence does not have a monolithic base, the space visually expands. The design will be appropriate if there are picturesque landscapes nearby.
Minuses:
- Aesthetic properties. The main drawback of the designs is their banal appearance. Most often, such a fence is abandoned due to the complete lack of beautiful design.
- Lack of visual protection. This fence will not hide the owners of their dachas from curious neighbors.
- Protection from the negative effects of external conditions. Characterized by the passage of dust, dirt and noise from the street.
Types of mesh
Standard non-galvanized structure. The simplest and cheapest, but of all the others it is less durable - its service life does not exceed 5 years. To make it last longer, it should be painted or treated with special water-repellent agents.
The next type is galvanized. Its design is very durable. It is profitable to buy for long-term use, the service life is more than 20-30 years. The cost of the material is much higher.
The most aesthetically pleasing is plasticized. The meshes are coated with a polymer layer, this protects against corrosion and increases service life. Has any colors.
The size of the cells ranges from 2 to 7 cm in length from one edge to the other. Usually the magnitude is not an important indicator. For fencing enclosures, chicken coops and other similar places, it is better to use a large mesh, for ordinary fences - a fine one. Height varies from 1 to 1.75 meters. Roll length from 5 to 10 m. Wire diameter from 1.6 to 2 mm.
Installation methods
There are two types of installation: tension and sectional. They do not present a significant difference in practicality and reliability, but there are differences in the installation method and aesthetics. The first tension type is an ordinary mesh, which is unrolled from a roll over the territory. The support points are the pillars holding the structure. This option is much easier to manufacture and costs less. The appearance will be less beautiful and the service life will be shorter.
In sections, the mesh is attached along the edges to the frames. The screens are welded to the posts. Such structures are a little more difficult to install, but they are stronger and more durable.
DIY fence installation
To make a fence (tensile type), you need materials: a roll, the length of which depends on the area of the fenced area, and pipes to hold the network. The first step in installation involves installing the poles.
You can use special posts for the chain-link with anti-corrosion coatings; ordinary pipes are also used. But in this case, they should be treated with special compounds and equipped with hooks to which the mesh should be hooked.
Driven nails, screws, and wire scraps will work as hooks.
Before construction, you should use pegs to mark the places for the pillars, which need to be installed 2.5 m from each other. A hole is dug to a depth of 0.8 m, sand is poured into the bottom and a little gravel is added there. You need to place the post there exactly and fill it with concrete mortar. You can avoid deviations using a level. In 2 days the foundation will be firmly fixed, and installation can continue.
You need to start the process with corner posts. In order for the tension to be reliable, you need to unroll the roll using reinforcement threaded through the center. It is more convenient to do the work with three people: the first will watch the upper edge, the second will watch the lower edge, and the third will be responsible for attaching the mesh to the hooks.
If, during the construction of a fence, a roll ends in the middle of the span, you need to attach the beginning of another roll to the end and tie it with wire or weave cells. Thus, the canvas will be continuous and it will be difficult to detect the transition.
Once the mesh attachment is complete, protective coatings must be applied. If the structure is made of non-galvanized material, it must be treated with an anti-corrosion agent or simply painted. The tendrils of the mesh are left curled up to protect against penetration or curled down, which completely depends on the decision of the owners.
How to make a sectional fence
Sectional ones are more difficult to build, since welding skills are required, and the foundation must be built much stronger. Screens or paints for the structure can be purchased or made independently.
Before building a structure, it is necessary to make a foundation. The pillars should be stronger and stiffer than in the first case. Corners are made at the ends, which are designed to hold the frames. The foundation for them is the same as for a tension fence, but they dig deeper from 1 to 1.5 m, since the overall structure will be much heavier.
If you install the fence yourself, you will need corners that need to be welded to the bottom and top of the posts. The thickness of each of them should be 5 mm. The frame is about 2.5 m long and 1.5 m wide.
Before attaching the mesh to the edges of the screen, it is necessary to adjust it to the size of the structure. If it is too big, you can trim it with a grinder. The network must be secured using reinforcing bars. It is better to paint over welding areas, as well as the entire structure.
Decor
Just building a fence is not enough; it needs to be further decorated. Especially if this design includes the main external fence.
The easiest way to arrange a fence is to plant climbing plants at the bottom, which are specially designed for dense covering of the surface. Thanks to this, the structure will look like a hedge. You cannot hang plants on a non-galvanized structure, as moisture will accelerate corrosion and quickly corrode the metal.
Another decoration option involves hanging pots with flowers or climbing plants, and they should be less dense. It is better to hang the pots in a certain sequence.
Make a fence with openwork weaving. It is supposed to make a certain pattern or pattern from the cells. Such designs are sold ready-made. It is very difficult to make them yourself, but it is possible if you have some artistic experience.
The next method is to weave colored materials into it: wires and threads. Thanks to this, you can make any patterns on the mesh, like on fabric. The technology is similar to the cross stitch method.
Such a simple fence does not stand out among others, but when designing sections it attracts the attention of many. In the hands of a creative person, even such a simple grid will become a work of art.

We make a chain-link fence on our own
Chain-link is perhaps the best material for creating lightweight fencing in your backyard. Galvanized metal mesh is reliable, durable and has an affordable price. Every summer resident and owner of a private house can make such fences from chain-link mesh. Subsequently, you can arrange green space, giving the site and the fence used an attractive appearance.
Enclose your area with a mesh fence
Options for supporting pillars
When arranging a mesh fence with your own hands, the filling is attached to the supporting fences, the correct choice of which will directly determine the durability and trouble-free operation of the fence. Supports can be made from the following materials:
- Wooden stands.
- Concrete pillars.
- Steel profile.
- Metal pipes.
Most often, summer residents and owners of private houses use metal pipes with a square cross-section to install posts for mesh fencing. On sale you can even find options for metal pipes with already welded hooks, which are designed specifically for subsequent convenient fastening of the metal mesh. You can reduce the cost of installing a chain-link fence yourself by using used pipes to which metal hooks are welded.
Correct calculation of materials
To make a fence, a chain-link with mesh sizes of 40-50 millimeters and a width of one and a half meters is used. A standard roll of such material will be 10 meters long. Accordingly, knowing the size of your site, you can accurately calculate the required amount of chain link to complete the fence. To prevent the mesh from sagging, it is recommended to install supports in increments of 200-250 centimeters. Therefore, one roll of material will require at least 5 columns.
To fence a plot of 6 acres, the fence of which will be about 30 meters long and one and a half meters high, you will need 12 posts with a length of 250 centimeters and three rolls of standard chain-link mesh. Each post should have three hooks, which are located at the bottom, in the middle and at the top. By multiplying the number of supports by three, you can calculate the required number of fastening hooks, which are welded to the supporting structure.
Sectional fencing is made from chain-link, for which you will need to additionally purchase metal corners from which the frame is made. The height of each element is usually equal to the width of the canvas, and the length of the purlin is no more than 2-2.5 meters. The easiest way to make a sectional fence is to use a corner piece 5 millimeters thick and measuring 40 by 40 millimeters.
Making a tension fence yourself
It is faster and easier to create tension fencing using chain-link than sectional options. Installing a chain-link fence with your own hands involves marking the area, making holes for installing supports, and fastening the fabric.
To build a fence, you will need the following:
- Construction sand.
- Crushed stone.
- Prepared concrete solution.
- Welding inverter.
- Galvanized mesh.
- Grinder and cutting wheel.
- Protective paint.
- Anti-corrosion primer.
- Roulette with level.
- Metal hooks.
- Pipes for support.
The chain-link and metal poles used must be purchased in advance, calculating the total amount of material. After appropriate preparation, you can begin working on the ground and making a chain-link fence.
Create an original fence for your site
Marking boundaries
Marking the area is done using pegs and long twine. In the places where the outer pillars are located, you should drive pegs and pull the string at a height of ten centimeters from the ground. Along the resulting marking lines, pegs should be placed where intermediate posts will be located in the future. The distance between such intermediate supports must always be the same and correspond to the previously calculated width of the run.
In places where supports will be located in the future, holes with a depth of 120 centimeters are made using a drill. The depth of the holes will depend on the type and nature of the soil. The diameter of the hole is twice the diameter of the post. A sand cushion about 10 centimeters thick should be poured onto the bottom of the hole, which will allow the support structure to be correctly installed in the future.
Installation of the supporting base
The metal pipes used are cleaned of rust, polished and, if possible, hooks are welded to them. After welding, the pipes are primed. Next, you can begin installing the supporting structures.
They are placed strictly horizontally, after which concrete solution is poured into the hole. To remove air from the solution, pierce the mixture with a steel rod or use industrial and homemade vibrators.
The solution will gain its strength in the second or third week, and will completely harden on the 28th day after pouring the material.
Metal supports can be driven into dense soil, which are located at a depth of 40-50 centimeters. For this work, a sledgehammer is used to drive the pipes to the required depth.
This technology for installing load-bearing poles can be used if there is no serious wind load and the soil has good load-bearing capacity.
This method of installing support pipes will be justified on rocky soils, but in unstable and sandy soil, repairs to the completed fence will be required in the future.
Chain link fastening
When securing the mesh, you do not need to unwind the entire roll of material. It is lifted vertically and fixed on hooks previously welded to the post. Next, step by step, the canvas is unwound and attached to the supporting pillars. If there are no hooks, the mesh should be fastened with steel wire at four fastening points at once.
The mesh should be tensioned evenly to prevent the material from sagging. The easiest way to carry out such construction is with an assistant, which will make it easier to stretch the material and attach it to the support posts.
You can prevent the chain-link from sagging by welding steel rods to the top of the web, which are threaded into the cells along the perimeter of the fence. Having secured the canvas, all that remains is to put the plugs on the posts and bend the fixing hooks inside.
Manufacturing of sectional fencing
Sectional fences have an attractive appearance, which invariably affects the popularity of this type of fence. It will not be difficult to carry them out using quality materials. The differences in operation are that the supporting posts are not made with fixing hooks, but have additional welded metal plates. Subsequently, the completed section filled with mesh will be attached to such plates.
To assemble the fence you will need:
- Fittings.
- Welding inverter.
- Grinder with a metal circle.
- Steel corners 40 by 40 millimeters.
- Fence mesh.
The site is marked and the supporting pillars are concreted. Having measured the distance between the supports, we begin to assemble the fence frame. The width of the section will be 15-20 centimeters less than the existing distance between the supporting pipes. The height of the section is the total height of the column minus twenty centimeters.
Steel corners are cut to the size of the frame , welded into a rectangle, scale is removed from them, and the inner and outer surfaces of the completed frame are ground.
The roll of chain-link is laid on the ground and cut with a grinder to the width of the future section; reinforcing bars are inserted into the outer cells on each side.
The resulting section blank is inserted into the frame and the reinforcement is welded to the inside of the corner. The mesh is carefully pulled down and the reinforcement is welded to the underside of the corner. The sides are secured in the same way. The finished sections are lifted vertically and then welded to the plates on the support posts.
When making a sectional fence, you need to ensure that the height of the frame attached to the support is the same. Even a difference of a few centimeters will be noticeable, and the fence will have a sloppy appearance. After installing all sections, all that remains is to prime the metal elements and paint them with special protective paint.
A mesh fence is a universal fence that is equally suitable for a summer house or a private home. Chain-link is a reliable, durable material that, if chosen correctly, will last for many years.
Making sectional or tension fences from mesh yourself is not difficult, so every homeowner can handle this kind of work.
It is only necessary to pay due attention to the quality of fastening of the support pillars, which are buried to one third of their height and carefully concreted.

How can you close a chain-link fence from neighbors: opaque bottom
An inexpensive chain-link fence between neighbors performs the main task, but the appearance seems unpresentable to many. The fence is confusing because of its transparency, especially in newly built-up areas where there are still no places for recreation, indoor buildings and plantings. There are many options for closing a chain-link fence from your neighbors.
Closing the fence between neighbors
Advantages and disadvantages
Like every building material, chain-link has advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of mesh metal products:
- ease of repair and maintenance;
- let the sun's rays pass through;
- low weight of the structure;
- easy installation;
- resistance to negative weather conditions;
- resistance to corrosion;
- acceptable cost.
A chain-link fence has additional advantages:
- high protective indicators;
- any height of the fence (taking into account the width of the roll);
- large selection of products;
- quick installation due to a special manufacturing form (sections);
- long operating time.
The disadvantages of a chain-link fence include its appearance, which may seem unaesthetic to many. In addition, it is worth noting the low protective performance of most chain-link fences.
The most expensive and reliable type of mesh is a galvanized mesh structure coated with polyvinyl chloride. She will not require additional processing.
The product has high corrosion protection and a long service life.
Why cover the chain-link mesh?
Why close the fence on your summer cottage from neighbors? The answer is quite simple. Since it actually performs the main functions, in other words, it blocks the backyard territory.
The fence should be masked when a number of conditions are necessary:
- you need to hide from view from the street or from a neighboring area. Few people want to be visible all the time;
- sun rays that penetrate the territory;
- the dacha is located in an open space and must be protected from the wind;
- you need to protect the area from dust and debris coming from the street;
- I don't like the appearance of the fence.
The photo below shows a fence between neighbors in the country.
Decoration options
There are many ideas on how you can close the chain-link fence from your neighbors. The following budget options are mainly chosen:
- Special camouflage covering materials.
- Creating a hedge.
- Artificial needles that are threaded into the fence.
- Shading nets.
- Installation of reeds.
- Embroidery made of colored polyethylene, ribbons.
- Colored opaque polycarbonate.
- Ready-made mats made of reeds and bamboo.
All the methods mentioned above will be a practical solution on how to make a chain-link fence opaque. You can use an option that allows you to enjoy your holiday in the country.
Camouflage camouflage net
If you need to get a durable solution, then using a camouflage fabric is a suitable method. This method has the following advantages:
- You can adjust the transparency level.
- Choice of various shades.
- The camouflage is quickly installed.
Before you close the chain-link fence from the eyes of your neighbors, you should determine how much you need to shade the dacha. You can choose solutions that will provide different levels of shading.
If you want to make a reliable design, you should choose a canvas with a nylon base. But frameless camouflage canvases are much cheaper in price.

Covering the fence with embroidery
This shelter option will delight family and neighbors. In this case, you will need to use your imagination and show diligence.
Chainlink decoration options
If you have a large number of multi-colored plastic bags or pieces of fabric, you can get an original solution:
- use unnecessary things to create an attractive fence;
- embroider your own pattern that cannot be found in the store;
- make an exquisite composition made of bright flowers.
Embroidering the necessary details takes time, so you should be patient. Before starting work, you should come up with a composition.
Installation of reeds
An original way to close a mesh fence is with reeds. There is no need to purchase any building materials, so this option is the most economical.
You need to prepare that you will have to spend some time installing each part through the mesh cells of the chain-link. This is done by threading through the top and closing the bottom. This method has the following advantages:
- solid fencing;
- natural materials look attractive;
- economical construction.
Reeds harmonize with any design. This will help create an original chain-link fence.
Reed and bamboo mats
If an original solution is required to close the fence of the site, then use reed, bamboo or reed mats. These products can be bought in the store, and they are already ready for use.
Advantages of the method:
- the mesh fence is opaque;
- mats are mounted on a chain-link easier, unlike reeds;
- long service life of an opaque fence;
- reed and reed mats are resistant to temperature fluctuations;
- Manufacturers impregnate the material with compounds, this protects the products from the negative effects of external factors.
Cover with polycarbonate
If you need to get a solid structure, you can choose polycarbonate sheets. There are opaque or translucent products.
Sheets are made in different color shades. You can choose a color that will harmoniously combine with your home, country buildings, and vegetation.
Advantages of polycarbonate:
- sheets are ready for installation;
- assortment of colors;
- selecting the transparency level of polycarbonate;
- easy installation;
- protection from views from the street;
- attractive appearance of the garden area.
- polycarbonate is selected for long-term use.
