What does an electric gas welder do?

Electric and gas welder: who is this?

What does an electric gas welder do?

Welding work on metal is a rather voluminous, labor-intensive and extremely responsible process. The durability and technical characteristics of the finished product directly depend on the quality of welding.

Of course, there are a great many types of welding. There are automatic and manual methods of welding products. However, manual electrogas welding (EGW), which is used when connecting large units and parts, is considered the most labor-intensive and responsible.

The essence of the work of an electric gas welder, responsibilities

The electric gas welding (EGW) method involves connecting various parts using an electric arc. In this case, the main difference from conventional arc welding is that the electric arc is placed in a special gas environment (usually oxygen or argon), which ensures continuity of the combustion process. As a result, the weld is smooth, monolithic and especially strong.

Another feature of EGS is its versatility. This type of welding can be used for most grades of steel and at the same time quite thick (about 12 mm). That is why electric gas welding is widely used in mechanical engineering and industrial construction.

A separate type of EGS is plasma welding, where a plasma flow (ionized gas under pressure) is used to weld parts. A distinctive feature of plasma welding is its high combustion temperature (over 30 thousand degrees Celsius). It is trusted to particularly experienced workers.

It is therefore no coincidence that the profession of electric and gas welder is singled out into a separate category. In principle, any experienced welder can master it, however, working with EGS requires skill and experience. At the same time, the work of an electric gas welder at the initial stage is not associated with welding parts at all - only with cutting them.

One way or another, an electric gas welder has to deal with many responsibilities during his work. First of all, it is worth mentioning:

  1. manual welding of parts of varying complexity and from various materials (steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, alloys);

  2. gas cutting of parts and scrap metals;

  3. control of welding machines for various purposes;

  4. production of spatial structures using welding.

The pinnacle of an electric gas welder's skill is considered to be working with refractory and stainless materials, such as titanium and various alloys based on it.

Working conditions for an electric and gas welder

Electric gas welding is widely used in the construction of strategic facilities: main oil and gas pipelines, bridges and structures, industrial facilities. In this case, working as an electric and gas welder requires constant travel and shifts.

Another option for work is working at a large industrial enterprise (shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, manufacturing parts and spare parts for cars, etc.). Here, an electric gas welder usually works in shifts.

The third option is less critical objects in the construction industry. Here, electric and gas welders are engaged in the installation of heating systems, sewerage and water supply, and ventilation. As a rule, the work schedule is also shifts, the payment is negotiable.

To work successfully, an electric gas welder, in addition to the skills of working with a welding machine, requires:

  1. ability to read drawings;

  2. knowledge of fire and electrical safety (3rd class of electrical safety approval);

  3. knowledge of standards and technical conditions for welding work;

  4. basic knowledge of strength materials, properties of metals and alloys.

Health hazards and early retirement for electric and gas welders

In any case, constant contact with welding negatively affects the health of the worker. First of all, vision suffers; often an electric gas welder develops pulmonary diseases due to constant contact with fine dust. Another dangerous factor is infrared radiation. In addition, the fluxes used in EGS are hazardous substances.

The most dangerous job is for argon welders of titanium products. They work in special chambers filled with argon. At high concentrations in the air, this gas is poisonous to humans, so argon workers have to work in special protective suits and in shifts that usually last half an hour.

Taking into account all the dangerous factors, an electric and gas welder has the right to early retirement and additional payments for hazardous work. However, in this case, the insurance period for men must be at least 25 years, and the working experience (directly in production and welding work) - 12.5 years.

For female gas welders, the conditions are softer: the total insurance experience is at least 20 years, and the worker - at least 10 years.

Training for electric and gas welders

The profession of electric and gas welder is mastered in institutions of secondary vocational education (colleges, vocational schools, technical schools). However, specialized education is not necessary to work as an electric and gas welder. Training is often carried out directly on the job.

Nevertheless, having a specialized education and a certificate as an electric and gas welder is a definite advantage in employment, since employers often need ready-made specialists with work experience.

Discharges of electric and gas welders according to ETKS

The Unified Tariff and Qualification Directory of Work and Professions of Workers (UTKS) lists five qualification categories of electric and gas welders - from 2 to 6.

At the initial stage, a 2nd category electric gas welder has the right only to cut metals and process scrap.

The most qualified and experienced specialist (6th category electric and gas welder) owns all types of EGS: plasma, gas, automatic, manual and semi-automatic. He is trusted to weld particularly complex components and assemblies: high-pressure pipelines, beams and support trusses, large tanks and containers of various shapes, etc.

Electrical and gas welder vacancies, average salary

In the labor market, the profession of an electric and gas welder is one of the most prestigious and highly paid. However, everything greatly depends on the work experience (category) of the specialist, as well as the field of work. Often, among the vacancies for electric and gas welders, there are offers of rotational work. As a rule, this is the laying of pipelines.

The highest salary is predictable for argon welders - up to 120 thousand rubles per month. Otherwise, the salary of an electric gas welder ranges from 35 to 60 thousand rubles per month.

Pros and cons of being an electric and gas welder

The work of an electric gas welder involves the presence of harmful factors and special responsibility. However, it has a number of advantages:

  • high salary and stable income;
  • consistently high demand for specialists;
  • official employment according to Labor Code;
  • benefits and early retirement.

There are also a lot of disadvantages:

Responsibilities of an electric gas welder: description of the profession

Reading time: 6 minutes

The profession of a welder is an excellent choice for those who want to quickly learn the craft in order to start working, and at the same time receive a good salary. In modern welding, there are many types of welders. Among them, electric and gas welders remain especially in demand.

In this article we will describe in detail who this electric and gas welder is, what duties he must perform, and what is the difference between an electric and gas welder.

general information

Electric and gas welders are in great demand on the labor market. Even despite the fact that hundreds of students throughout Russia receive this specialty every year. Electric and gas welders are needed in many areas: from construction to the oil refining industry. There are many welders in the country, but among them there are not enough truly qualified craftsmen.

Professionals in their field receive decent pay. Most of the interviewed craftsmen claim that the size of the salary directly depends on the qualifications and desires of the worker himself.

But remember that welding is one of the most dangerous fields of activity for humans. You must be physically fit and healthy to handle this type of work. Sometimes electric and gas welders have to work in less than comfortable conditions and in awkward positions.

What should an electric gas welder know?

To do the job correctly, an electric gas welder must have certain knowledge. He must have a perfect understanding of the structure and operating principle of all welding equipment that he uses in his work. He should also know everything about gas cylinders, welding torches and gearboxes that are used in such work.

He must know all the basic methods of tack welding, cutting seams, and preparing edges for welding. He must understand all types of welds and joints.

An electric gas welder must have information about safety rules when welding using various technologies. He should also know all the basic terms used in the drawings. And in general, a welder must be able to read blueprints.

In addition, the electric gas welder must know everything about consumables. He must understand the brands of electrodes, fluxes, the gases used, their composition and properties.

The welder must understand how to properly store and use consumables, as well as how to select them correctly depending on the task at hand. It should not exceed the material consumption standards. Also, an electric gas welder must know all types of welding defects and be able to eliminate them.

These are the basic knowledge requirements for an electric gas welder. You need to have a good grasp of theory and be able to apply it in practice to become a truly sought-after specialist. The work is far from easy, and you are unlikely to be able to idle at work. But this is excellent ground for your career growth and salary increase.

What is the difference from a gas-electric welder?

Electric and gas welders are often called gas and electric welders, which causes confusion not only in conversation, but also in documents. Based on this, many are interested in how a gas-electric welder differs from an electric-gas welder and whether there are any differences at all.

Let's start with the main thing. An electric and gas welder and a gas and electric welder are two identical professions that differ only in name. There are no differences in responsibilities. However, it is safe to say that “electric and gas welder” is the only correct spelling of this word. Whereas “gas-electric welder” is simply its colloquial form, fixed in the minds.

At the moment, no resolution, order or classification officially contains such a profession as “gas-electric welder”. There is only one correct option - “electric and gas welder”.

It would seem, well, let there be different versions of one word, and let everyone speak as they feel comfortable. After all, a similar situation arose with the words “registration” and “registration”. However, using the wrong term when denoting a profession can lead to serious consequences.

There are many master electric and gas welders whose employment documents say “gas and electric welder”. Such a mistake can lead to the fact that the welder simply will not have the opportunity to retire early or receive other benefits, since the list of dangerous professions does not include the word “gas-electric welder.”

That is why it is so important to make sure that the position “electric and gas welder” is written in all your employment documents, and not “gas and electric welder”. Otherwise, you will have to solve this problem through the court, and this is a long and not the most pleasant process.

Also, do not confuse the profession of an electric gas welder with a gas welder and an electric welder. The professions of electric welder and gas welder have completely different responsibilities.

Instead of a conclusion

An electric and gas welder is a promising and well-paid profession. It is in demand and allows you to achieve good career growth. But this is only possible if you constantly practice and strive for a higher position.

Electrical and gas welders have many responsibilities and are subject to many requirements when entering the workforce. It is enough to read any of the job descriptions for an electric gas welder to understand how much a master should know and be able to do. This job is intended for hardworking and motivated people who are ready to work and develop.

As for the terms, keep in mind that the professions of a gas-electric welder and an electric-gas welder are no different. These are two names for one type of activity. Simply put, they both do the same job. In documents it is correct to write “electric and gas welder”, since the word “gas and electric welder” is not in any modern classification of professions in Russia.

In the modern world, metal products and structures are ubiquitous. Therefore, it is not surprising that professions related to metal mining and the manufacture of metal structures are among the most important and significant specialties.

The profession of electric and gas welder, whose representatives connect metal parts into a single whole by welding, also belongs to such specialties.

In the modern world, metal products and structures are ubiquitous. This material is actively used in construction, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, industry and in everyday life.

Therefore, it is not surprising that professions related to metal mining and the manufacture of metal structures are among the most important and significant specialties.

The profession of electric and gas welder , whose representatives connect metal parts into a single whole by welding, also belongs to such specialties

A person who does electric welding has been and will be needed always and everywhere. However, this does not mean that not everyone can become an electric gas welder.

Connecting metal structures is a very responsible job, the quality of which determines the integrity, safety and durability of buildings, cars, ships, aircraft, household appliances, etc.

Therefore, this profession especially values true professionals who not only know how to use a welding machine, but are also ready to bear responsibility for the quality of their work.

Who is an electric gas welder?

An electric gas welder is a specialist who, using an electric gas welding machine, welds various metal products (for example, assemblies of metal structures, car parts, pipelines, etc.). At the same time, it can equally easily perform welding work using both electric arc and gas or plasma welding.

The origin of the name of the profession causes a lot of controversy among etymologists. According to one version, the word “welding” comes from the name of Svarog, the god of blacksmithing. If you believe another version, then the Old Slavic word “var” (heat) was taken as a basis. Well, the third version says that the name was invented by V.

Petrov, who discovered the electric arc in 1902 and indicated the possibility of its practical application. From this same time, the history of the profession of electric and gas welder began. The next stage of development was in 1952, when employees of the Institute of Electric Welding named after. E.O. Paton developed gas welding.

And only in 1961, electric gas welding (EGW) was developed, the features of which we are talking about today.

So, today the work of an electric gas welder includes responsibilities such as:

  • reading drawings;
  • preparing metal parts for cooking;
  • debugging of welding equipment (including setting the required mode on the device);
  • connection of metal structures by means of automatic and mechanized welding;
  • control over the quality of seams welded by a specialist;
  • cleaning of welding seams immediately after welding;
  • performing welding with three types of seams: ceiling, vertical and horizontal;
  • cutting metal using an automatic or semi-automatic cutter;
  • prevention of stresses and various types of deformations that may appear on/in the product during operation.

In addition to these basic working aspects, a modern specialist also cuts parts of the required sizes and shapes, fuse, solder and heat the metal.

Of course, this profession also has narrow specializations. This is first of all an electric welder - a person who welds using manual arc welding, then a gas welder, and the third specialization is a metal gas cutter.

What personal qualities should an electric and gas welder have?

In addition to a passionate desire to master the basics of this profession, a specialist must have certain personal qualities. Firstly, he needs to be prepared for the fact that he will have to learn a lot of new things. And for this you need to have a well-developed long-term memory. In addition, a person who wants to become an ideal specialist and obtain the profession of an electric and gas welder must have the following qualities:

  • calm;
  • attentiveness;
  • ability to concentrate;
  • technical thinking;
  • good vision;
  • no allergies;
  • confidence in your actions;
  • accuracy;
  • physical endurance;
  • equilibrium;
  • developed spatial imagination;
  • absence of bad habits (especially addiction to alcohol);
  • skill to work in team.

It is impossible not to talk about the professional knowledge and skills that an electric gas welder must know:

  • properties of metals and methods of their connection;
  • device of the welding machine and rules for working with it;
  • electrode device;
  • safety regulations;
  • requirements for the quality of the finished product;
  • features of preparing parts for welding;
  • methods and means of eliminating defects.

By the way, some statistics. More than 50% of welding work is done manually. The most popular is electric arc welding; gas welding is used only in 8% of cases.

Advantages of being an electric and gas welder

If you look around, the products and structures welded from metal that surround us on all sides immediately catch your eye. And this indicates that the profession of electric and gas welder is one of the most in demand. A specialist capable of high-quality welding of metal parts will never be left without work. At the same time, he can choose the field of activity that is most interesting to him: mechanical engineering, construction, public utilities, etc.

Another undoubted advantage of the profession of an electric and gas welder can be safely called professional skills that will be useful both in everyday life and for receiving additional income by providing welding services to the population privately. Let us note that it is not at all necessary for electric and gas welders to specifically seek additional income, since the level of wages (within 40-60 thousand rubles per month) allows him to achieve material well-being without it.

And one more important fact. Metal structures can last for centuries. Therefore, there is a high probability that our descendants will study the history and life of our time, including the results of the work of an electric and gas welder. This increases specialists’ sense of self-worth in the life and development of society.

Disadvantages of being an electric and gas welder

Speaking about the disadvantages of the profession of electric and gas welder , first of all, it is necessary to note the high risk of industrial injuries. Not only does the specialist have to work with hot surfaces, high voltage and gas cylinders, but also the structures that need to be welded are sometimes poorly secured. This can cause a very heavy (up to several tens of tons) metal structure to fall and, as a result, accidents.

This profession also has medical contraindications. In particular, people suffering from diseases such as allergies, nervous disorders, diseases of the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and other systems cannot work as an electric and gas welder.

And most importantly, the specialist himself bears responsibility for the quality of welds. Well, since the metal structures being welded most often represent a kind of frame on which the safety and integrity of the entire structure, building or pipeline depends, we can safely say that the electric and gas welder is also responsible for the durability of the house or utility networks.

Where can you get a job as an electric and gas welder?

There are three ways to become an electric and gas welder Firstly, in a specialized college or technical school, which, by the way, are available in almost every city in Russia, with a specialty in “Electric welding and gas welding welder” or “Welding and gas plasma cutting equipment operator.”

Secondly, in special courses for gas-electric welders, which, as a rule, are located in special training centers. Please note that the name of the course can be either classic (that is, “Gas-electric welder courses”) or others. For example, “Argon welder course” or “Welding course”. The duration of training is set by specialists teaching at training centers.

Thirdly, get a job as an apprentice to an experienced electric and gas welder, who will teach in practice all the intricacies of this profession. Note that this method is more suitable for those people who already have a secondary specialized or higher education behind them. Otherwise, the specialist completely deprives himself of any prospects for career growth.

If you decided to get this profession in the first way, then we recommend choosing one of the best technical schools and colleges in Russia specializing in training electric and gas welders. Such educational institutions include:

  • Moscow Automotive College;
  • Mytishchi Mechanical Engineering College;
  • Khabarovsk Mechanical Engineering College;
