How to bend a pipe for a greenhouse

How to correctly bend a profile pipe for a greenhouse

Almost every owner has a situation when it is necessary to change the bend of a metal rod to install a greenhouse or install a sewer system. Since it is quite easy to bend a profile pipe at home with your own hands, you do not need to involve specialists for this work.

How to bend a profile pipe at home without a pipe bender

The average homeowner rarely has special equipment available. Therefore, you need to know how to correctly bend an aluminum or steel pipe yourself for a greenhouse, canopy (canopy) and other needs without a pipe bender.

It is very convenient to carry out this work using a welding inverter and a household grinder. To begin with, a drawing is developed, from which the required angle will be drawn and calculated in the future. The diagram must accurately measure the rounding.

Step-by-step instructions from an expert on how to bend pipes using a vice, grinder and welding machine:

  1. If you plan to bend the corrugated pipe in a semicircle, then at the site of the intended bend, several thin cuts are made using a grinder;
  2. You can do the work yourself only if you first fix the reinforcement in a clamping vice. When the cuts are made and cleared of chips, you need to carefully begin to bend the pipe;
  3. After the ring is closed, you need to weld the holes that were formed as a result of bending with a welding machine. Some craftsmen use simple soldering irons if the communication has a small diameter;
  4. In order for the bend area to be neat, it will need to be additionally sanded and coated with a protective agent - this will help prevent corrosion or premature failure of the joint.

You can bend the pipe evenly using a spring that fits the size of the profile section:

  1. Communication is locked in a vice;
  2. A spring of the appropriate diameter is inserted into the hole. This will prevent the profile pipe from breaking or taking on an incorrect shape when bent;
  3. To make the work easier, you need to heat the joint and carefully manually bend the communication to the required diameter;
  4. Various metal products suitable for the slope, say, angle grinders, arches, etc., are very helpful here.

In a similar way, you can try to deform communication using sand . How to properly bend a canopy pipe without using a vice or springs:

  1. You need to stop one end of the tube by closing it with a wooden wedge or any other plug;
  2. The closed end of the pipe is fixed in the ground or in a vice (if possible). You can also use any other device that allows you to establish communication;
  3. After this, you need to pour sand into the open end and heat the blowtorch;
  4. The heated lamp needs to be held over the future bend, and then carefully bend the pipe into the desired shape. It is necessary to work quite quickly, because the metal, after it has cooled, will be unsuitable for processing.

After bending, it is necessary to leave the pipe in a fixed position for some time - this will help the material consolidate its new shape. If the work is carried out in winter, then the craftsmen expose it even to the cold.

Arch (canopy) without pipe bender

As you know, for a canopy, for example, in the shape of an arch, you need a curved profile pipe. It is important to make sure that the arcs are equally curved, otherwise the canopy will not work. Now we will look at how to do this without using a machine, pipe bender and other aids of this kind.

We will need:

  • The support on which we will work, for example, a metal table;
  • As a beam, you can take a pipe 80 by 60 or 50 by 50 mm, 3 meters long. But this method is universal - so it doesn’t matter what kind of support beam you end up with;
  • A profile pipe 20 by 20 or 20 by 40 mm, which we will bend.

Procedure (step by step instructions):

  1. We divide the support into 6 equal parts. It is very important here - exactly into 6 parts, regardless of how long it is;
  2. At the dividing lines, it is necessary to weld the posts strictly at 90 degrees to the beam. The middle post is 250 mm, the closest to the middle one is 250 mm * 0.8888 = 222.22 mm, and the outermost (smallest post) is 250 mm * 0.5556 = 138.9 mm;

Arched greenhouse: preferably a gable one made of polycarbonate, profile pipes, do-it-yourself drawing, droplet type - Website about

There are different types of greenhouses on the market. Everyone has negative and positive sides. The service life of the entire structure and the efficiency of its use depend on the materials used as cladding. Therefore, it is important to create in advance a high-quality drawing of a polycarbonate greenhouse with a gable roof.

How do you make gable polycarbonate greenhouses with your own hands?

A gable roof means that the structure resembles two gable roofs connected to each other. It is connected into a single whole by the walls. But there are no walls themselves in the literal sense of the word; their function in this case is performed by the ridge of the roof, along with the supporting beams and logs.

Gable roof greenhouses can be divided into two subtypes:

The main material for making the frame is timber. The product is covered with a film, sometimes there are two layers of it. The main advantage of such greenhouses is their low cost.

  1. For use in winter.

In this case, frames based on beams or metal rods are used. The coating function is performed by standard polycarbonate or glass.

For a gable greenhouse, the following dimensions are considered standard:

  • Height at the ridge - 2-2.5 meters;
  • Length no more than 5-7 meters;
  • Width from 2.5 to 3 meters.

A winter gable greenhouse with a polycarbonate coating is an option offered for consideration.

What materials are used for the greenhouse

Installation of a greenhouse involves the use of the following set of devices:

  1. Fasteners. Conventional self-tapping screws are excellent for solving this problem;
  2. Pipe made of aluminum or profile, galvanized;
  3. Angle made of steel, also galvanized;
  4. Profiled timber with a cross-section of at least 50 to 50.

Polycarbonate panels are now sold in a variety of sizes. The standard width is 2.1 meters, the length varies - 12 meters or 2.6 meters minimum. Specific numbers are selected depending on the intended project on the basis of which the gable greenhouse is being built.

For a summer structure, the minimum acceptable thickness is 6 millimeters. In the case of the winter version, it is recommended to set at least 15 mm. Such structures will be able to withstand the weight of even all the snow that has fallen. At the same time, the material bends easily when necessary.

Before purchasing, the quality of greenhouse polycarbonate must be carefully checked; you do not need to take the seller’s word for it. A low quality product can ruin the entire structure.

Main stages of construction

Winter gable greenhouses are capital buildings with serious weight.

The work plan will have the following description:

  • First the foundation is built;

Strip foundation types or a rubble stone base are the minimum requirements for such structures. A section of up to 40 by 40 cm is used along the entire perimeter.

  • The timber frame goes on top of the foundation. The frame is subsequently mounted on it;

For beams, additional treatment is important, using primers and antiseptics. Wooden products are always at risk of rotting.

  • One of the options is when the installation of the frame sheathing is carried out entirely. There is no need to immediately attach the elements of the product. The entire structure is assembled at the construction site, close to the foundation. All that remains is to move this part into place and secure the harness. Metal corners and screws are used for fastening;
  • There is a second option - when vertical posts are placed around the entire perimeter, every meter. This must be done before the foundation is poured. Then, when the foundation is poured, the base of the sheathing is already ready. Then the transverse beams are installed and secured with self-tapping screws. The gable greenhouse is not finished yet;

The frame must be planned in such a way that the cell size does not exceed 50 by 50 cm. Then the entire structure will remain stable and the roofing material will not deteriorate.

  • The roof is taken care of after finishing the sheathing work. The cross beam is screwed with self-tapping screws or welded in the center of the greenhouse;
  • Rafters and racks are installed at an angle provided for by the created project;
  • Cutting and securing polycarbonate sheets are one of the final stages. The resulting seams are sealed using aluminum tape;

The frame is sheathed from top to bottom. Openings for windows and doors are approached at the end.

  • It is not recommended to install the greenhouse at temperatures below 10 degrees above zero. Otherwise, the polycarbonate sheets will warp during the cutting process. Cutting involves the use of special construction scissors and an electric jigsaw. Low quality cutting destroys the material.

Gable greenhouse project: recommendations for drawing up

Preliminary designs and drawings of a gable polycarbonate greenhouse are compiled in several stages:

  1. Determination of location;
  2. Selecting specific sizes for the greenhouse;
  3. Definition with form;
  4. Selecting suitable materials;
  5. Choice of foundation;
  6. Calculation of windows and doors for ventilation;
  7. Formation of the drawing. Then the gable greenhouse will be complete.

Choosing a suitable location for a greenhouse is based on several factors:

  • Distribution of light from the sun;

The ideal option is when sunlight illuminates any side of the greenhouse, from morning to evening. It is not advisable to place a building so that other objects on the territory shade it. If the condition cannot be met, you should strive to ensure that the light falls from 12-13 pm to 6-8 pm.

It is recommended to choose level places for the greenhouse. The presence of a slope makes terracing mandatory.

  • Orientation to the cardinal directions;

The long sides of the greenhouse are ideally oriented north and south. Accordingly, the end part faces east and west. Ventilation windows are installed on the south side.

It is not recommended to install greenhouses where it is windy all the time. The hillsides in the north are not suitable for construction.

Lowlands and peat soils are also not optimal options for creating greenhouses. Plants are affected by the temperature in such places; it is below normal.

It’s easy to make a choice based on the following indicators:

  1. Goals set for the owner of the site;
  2. Construction budget;
  3. The area of available land.

The standard shape of a greenhouse is an elongated rectangle. The exception is dome-shaped structures. Beds and crops are planted along the edges. A path is laid in the middle. When building a wide greenhouse, there are more paths and rows with beds.

For a bed, the optimal width is 100 cm, in the case of paths – 60-70. With lower values, working in the greenhouse will not be convenient. To calculate the width of the building, it is proposed to perform the following actions:

  • Adding the width of all paths and beds;
  • 10-15 cm is added to the resulting figure;
  • The final result is used in practice.

2.5-6 meters are standard values when creating a gable greenhouse.

What else to consider?

For the length of buildings, a multiplicity of 2-2.1 meters is required. This is the standard width for polycarbonate sheets. 10-15 centimeters are added to the number.

The height of the object depends on the shape. 2.1 meters is the best option for arched buildings without a base. Creating a plinth will make the building taller, then it will be more convenient to work. In other cases, the height is selected individually, at the request of the owner.

Conclusion

A gable greenhouse is a practical structure, the construction of which should not take much time and effort. It is easy to buy houses of a similar shape ready-made. When planning, the client himself chooses the size that will be more convenient to use. Polycarbonate and film are coatings considered the most practical for such buildings.

Timely preparation of a plan simplifies the construction process and protects against further mistakes. The greenhouse will be durable and of high quality, pleasing you with the harvest for a long time.

How to bend a pipe for a greenhouse without a pipe bender

At home, many craftsmen make greenhouses, gazebos, carports with their own hands, and independently install heating, water and gas lines. At the same time, they have to deal with pipes of different materials, sections and often solve the problem of how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender.

And it’s not about saving money (a simple manual device is inexpensive) - a standard factory pipe bender cannot provide the entire wide range of work with various lengths, radii and materials that are used in households. Therefore, bending methods that can be used without the use of factory equipment are relevant and useful for any home craftsman to learn.

Methods for bending pipes at home

The ways to bend pipe elements at home without using factory tools are quite varied and include physical and temperature effects.

Application of the hot method

Most metals and alloys heated to high temperatures become more ductile and more easily susceptible to plastic deformation. Such materials include: steel, copper, aluminum, brass, duralumin, aluminum-ferrous bronze.

During heat treatment, zinc alloys, gray cast iron, and tin bronze become brittle. Moreover, the higher the heating temperature, the greater the ductility - for steel heated to 700ºС.

the deformation force required is 4.5 times greater than for products with a temperature of 1200ºС.

Also, all heated metals become 25 - 30 times less strong than in a cold state - this allows workpieces to be easily bent without strong internal resistance, while obtaining the smallest bending radius.

When metal is exposed to temperature, the main danger is burnout - in this case, when heated, the metal melts, oxygen penetrates into its structure and brittle, destructible oxides are formed.

The burnout effect is irreversible and is a defect, therefore, to eliminate this phenomenon during heating, you should use devices with a known jet temperature or maintain a certain time for the heated area to remain in the flame.

Fig.2 Do-it-yourself bending on templates

We use fillers - sand and water

The use of sand or water placed inside the workpiece helps to distribute the force evenly over the entire bending surface. For work, fine-grained, well-dried seeded sand without foreign inclusions is used, which is placed in the internal cavity and closed with ordinary or heat-resistant plugs in case of further thermal effects on the pipe workpiece.

Water is rarely used - in a liquid state, it knocks out plugs under pressure (this does not happen with sand due to high friction), so it is usually used in a frozen state in winter. In this case, there is no question of heating - the pipes are bent by physical force on templates or rollers.

Applying templates

In order to give the workpiece the required shape, a template is often used. It can be any surface around which the workpiece is bent - a round pipe of large cross-section with spiral winding, a stationary roller with a certain diameter, metal plates to which the bent part is pressed with force. To obtain a complex curved shape, templates are used from a series of self-tapping screws, screwed into a solid base and defining the path for the deformable curved element.

Rolls

Using rolls, you can make a homemade manual lever-type pipe bender, which is in no way inferior to factory samples; when the device operates, under the influence of a lever, the part bends around the spherical surface of the roll.

The most popular in households are pipe bending rollers, similar to industrial units. They consist of two rotating rollers, between which a third is located at some distance from their axis.

During operation, the workpiece is placed on two outer rollers and a central roller is brought to it, creating pressure on the surface - as a result, the part bends. Using this device, you can obtain a fairly large, uniform radius of curvature over a large distance; the device is especially effective in creating arched profiles for various types of canopies and building structures.

The device can bend round and rectangular workpieces, steel angles and plates when constructing rolls with grooves of a different profile section. The device is capable of working with materials of large cross-section, its maximum radius of curvature does not exceed 3 - 4 pipe diameters.

Rice. 4 Do-it-yourself bending of a profile pipe on rollers

Springs

The springs can be used as an independent pipe bender when working with small-diameter products made of soft materials (copper, metal-plastic) or as an auxiliary device that replaces an industrial mandrel. The spring can be placed outside or in the internal cavity of the product, ensuring that when it bends, the load is evenly distributed over the area of the bend.

How to bend a pipe without a pipe bender - simple methods

The above methods are effectively used in the household, both independently and in combination with other methods. At the same time, to work with different types of materials, profile shapes and sections, bending angles, various technologies should be used to ensure the best quality and performance.

Rice. 5 Bending a profile pipe with your own hands using a homemade pipe bender

Features of profile pipe bending

Rolled metal of rectangular or square cross-section is a popular type of building materials in the household; it is widely used in the construction of greenhouse floors, gazebos, and various types of sheds for storing automobile equipment and household utensils. Therefore, bending a metal profile is one of the most pressing tasks in everyday life and is done in the following ways.

  1. You can easily bend a profile pipe with your own hands using a simple template device in the form of a round horizontal or vertical section of pipeline. To carry out the operation, one end of the workpiece is rigidly fixed behind the template or simply rested on the surface, after which the workpiece is moved around the top of the template. If it is necessary to obtain a large bending radius along the entire length, the part is moved forward and the operation is repeated again.
  2. A popular bending method in households and industry is the use of round movable rolls along which the workpiece is bent or rolled repeatedly. In everyday life, such devices are often made to obtain an arched profile, producing a variety of three-roll structures. To obtain a smaller radius of curvature, you can also make a mechanical manual device with a movable roller, around which a metal profile workpiece is bent around with the help of a long lever.

To obtain small radii of curvature, you can also use sand filler in combination with heating - in this case, the steel is bent with a higher quality.

Rice. 6 Way to bend a metal pipe into a coil

How to bend a stainless or steel pipe

In the home, it is often necessary to bend a thin-walled stainless steel pipe to create spiral coils in heating systems and moonshine stills. The methods used when bending stainless steel are similar to the generally accepted ones; the following methods are the most popular when working.

  1. Thin-walled stainless steel with a small radius of curvature must be bent using spring elements (mandrels) that provide a uniform load on the surface in the bending zone, or loose fillers.
  2. If it is necessary to bend a workpiece with a large radius of curvature, you can use a universal three-roll homemade unit or bend it with a round template using an internal spring.
  3. It is best to bend a thick-walled stainless steel pipe after heating it with a gas burner; similar operations are carried out with thick-walled steel pipes with a small bending radius.

How to correctly bend a profile pipe for a greenhouse

A greenhouse frame made of metal is the most reliable and durable, but instructions are needed on how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender. Metal blanks can be transformed in different ways, but the choice of technology and devices depends on the thickness of the product with a round or rectangular cross-section.

Such parts will be needed for arched greenhouse structures under polycarbonate and glass roofs with a broken dome.

What is important to know about profile transformation methods

Structural variations of greenhouses require different types of frames, depending on the type of roof. Metal is the most stable and reliable alternative to wood and plastic structures.

A greenhouse metal structure with thin stiffening ribs allows more light to pass through, but its supports are much heavier. Such a “skeleton” requires a foundation with greater depth than for wood or plastic, especially if thick glass is used as the covering for a solid “green house”.

Bending of metal products is carried out cold and when heated, depending on the characteristics of the workpieces, wall thickness and shape. In accordance with GOST, profiled pipes of various shapes are produced:

  • Round;
  • Flat oval;
  • Square;
  • Rectangular.

When building seasonal arched greenhouses under the film, steel rods are also used. For the construction of greenhouses, it is recommended to use ordinary round pipes, as well as square and rectangular sections, which are easier to connect after flaring.

A dense polyethylene membrane can be stretched over the rounded “skeleton”, and it is easier to attach a rigid, translucent coating to smooth and flat walls.

Each type of pipe has a so-called minimum and maximum permissible radius of curvature; accordingly, it is advisable to know it before bending a thin-walled profile pipe.

Compliance with this important condition will ensure the transformation of the workpiece without cracks, breaks, flattening and other defects.

The bending coefficient is indicated in a special table or calculated using a special “calculator” program, where all data on metal products, including the resistance coefficient, are entered. For a small angle of bending or transformation of a large fragment with a small radius, this is not necessary to take into account.

Attention: It is not recommended to bend thick-walled and thick pipes with your own hands without heating - this is a dangerous and labor-intensive task.

Arcs for the frame of arched greenhouses made of carbon or low-alloy steel are slightly springy - they tend to return to their original shape. After bending, the process often requires repetition or processing in a different way according to a general pattern.

During transformation, the processed surface of a metal workpiece simultaneously exerts several forces, including wall tension and compression. It is much easier to achieve the desired result if you use a welding machine for heating.

When bent at a small angle, the hollow interior is filled with a spring of a suitable diameter. But you can fill the cavity with sifted sand so that the profiled pipe does not flatten, as can be seen in the photo - how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender.

When obtaining a workpiece of the required shape, it is important to maintain the ratio of the axes of the segments that will need to be joined. During processing, the outer wall may become cracked and burst, and the inner wall may become corrugated with folds, so it is important to monitor the bending process until completion.

Bending methods

Without experience, it is difficult to bend a pipe at home, but preheating with a burner will make the workpiece more pliable and plastic. Under certain conditions, heating is impossible, then devices and templates for cold bending are used.

It is easiest to work when the pipes are thin-walled - less effort than changing the shape of standard products.

Regular round-shaped pipes are suitable for arch-shaped prefabricated structures. Rectangular rolled metal has its own characteristics. Experts recommend using cold technology for profile sizes up to 10 mm, and heating is required for profile heights of about 40 mm and above.

Changing the shape of pipes is possible through:

  • profile bending;
  • vice;
  • mandrels;
  • bending plates;
  • special template
  • homemade bending machine.

Among the simplest devices is a vice, in which one end of the pipe is held, the other is hooked with a workpiece of larger diameter. Next, the tilt is performed on your own or with any mechanical device such as a winch.

Features of working with cold bending methods

Thin pipes are easy to bend using a special horizontal plate with holes and pins as stops. To obtain products for the greenhouse frame of the required shape, they are secured between the stops and bent from the middle to the edges.

With minimal precision and maximum effort, it is possible to bend a round pipe without heating.

Pipes of medium thickness are transformed thanks to a special roller device, which works based on the operating principle of the “Volnov machine”. The work turns out to be of higher quality than in other “cold” options.

When obtaining a large radius of curvature of the pipe, a stationary template with clamps is suitable, which fixes the workpieces. Such devices are classified as plane-parallel plates.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Bdy-kULkB0

A manually bent pipe is placed in a groove according to its dimensions. If it is possible to transform a pipe or profile using one of the simplest methods, you can do without heating.

Profiles are cold bent with or without filler if the radius or angle is small. Pipes of large and medium sections are filled with sifted sand (rosin) or a dense spring. Its dimensions should coincide as much as possible with the inner diameter of the pipe so that it fits tightly and resists flattening and sudden deformation in bending areas.

Tip: If there is a large volume of bent blanks for the greenhouse frame, the easiest way is to rent mechanical tools or a machine for working with metal.

When there is a prospect of starting to make greenhouses as a source of income, it is better to purchase any type of bending equipment.

Peculiarities of operation when bending with heating of a pipe or profile

If you have purchased a lot of material for the greenhouse frame blanks, which practically cannot be transformed in a cold way, you cannot do without heating the pipes.

A proven method of counteracting defects is heating with preliminary filling with sand. This will ensure uniform bending and exact compliance of the workpiece radius with the template.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  What is reinforcement overlap

To work, you will need a concrete or other area with a hard, non-flammable surface, an electrical connection to heat the device, and protective clothing, including canvas gloves.

At the top seal, grooves are made on both sides through which heated air should escape. The bottom plug is firmly driven into the pipe and they begin to slowly pour sand, tapping the walls of the pipe.

Attention: Metal products with a welded seam when bending pipes should be on the side, and not on the outer or inner side - the seam should not come apart, but will interfere with the transformation.

Heating is not required throughout the entire pipe, but in a marked area where a small angle or radial bend is needed. A sign that it is time to finish heating with the burner will be scale coming off the pipe and the metal being red-hot.

If the profile (pipe) is ready, bend it to the required shape according to a template common to the entire frame.

It is recommended to carry out the transformation in one movement or in 1 step, not with a sharp, but with a confident movement in the vertical or horizontal plane. After completing the bending, compare it with the template, if necessary, make a little adjustment.

We do not bend it under any circumstances (only compress it), otherwise the metal will lose its strength. After cooling, knock out the plugs and pour out the sand. If the wooden plug does not come out, you can burn it out over a fire and pry it out with a screwdriver.

As can be seen from the description, there is nothing difficult about bending pipes for the greenhouse frame.

Arches for a greenhouse from a profile pipe – Pipes and plumbing

When making greenhouses for their site, every person always has the first and main question - what to make a greenhouse from, what material to use for this?

Today we will talk about how to make a greenhouse from a profile pipe.

Profile pipe - features of working with it

Manufacturing is the main task

This material makes quite strong frames for greenhouses, and if the material is properly treated with a protective coating, these greenhouses are also durable.

The frame of a greenhouse made from a profile pipe consists of many elements, and if assembling such a frame does not seem to be a difficult task, then the manufacture of individual elements can baffle even an experienced handyman.

It's not all about skill and knowledge, but especially about the particular material. Let's deviate a little from the main topic and look at this issue in more detail.

Not all advice is on point

As many have probably noticed, there are many tips for building a greenhouse from a profile pipe. Having typed the treasured words into a search engine, what do we get in the end?

And in most cases we get a method for making a greenhouse frame from a pipe. Yes, it’s from a pipe, but not profiled at all.

Our reference is a profile pipe, this is a pipe whose internal cross-section differs from a regular round pipe and has a square or rectangular shape.

Profile pipe - distinctive features

  • Profile pipe is used in various constructions as a structural material.

If we speak figuratively and compare this material with wood, then the profile pipe plays the role of a beam. Do you agree, is there a difference between timber and logs or round timber?

  • A special difference between a profile pipe and a regular pipe is the presence of four stiffeners.

Our information is that with a much lower weight, a profile pipe is much stronger than a regular pipe.

Experts know that when bending a beam, the main load falls on the areas that are located at the edges. The load has virtually no effect on the central part or core; there are no factors leading to deformation.

  • Having a more durable material and at the same time light weight, it can be adapted to carry out various projects and manufacture different structures, which design engineers use with success.

The main problem is the bend

But this circumstance dictates the use of special approaches and the use of special tools when working with this material.

  • For example, you are building a greenhouse from an ordinary pipe (see Do-it-yourself greenhouse from plastic pipes);
  • You will not have any problems or questions when making it, unless, of course, you know how to work with metal and you have sufficient experience in this;
  • When you build a greenhouse from corrugated pipe with your own hands, a lot of questions arise;
  • You will have them already when you just start making your own drawing of a greenhouse from a profile pipe.

It’s no secret that you can bend an ordinary pipe without the use of special devices, but when making a frame for a greenhouse, this may be necessary.

But when will you think about how to bend a profile pipe for a greenhouse? This is a completely different question.

It may lead to you completely abandoning the use of this material in the design or you will need the help of specialized companies or metalworking shops.

Without equipment you can't go anywhere

The fact is that bending a profile pipe without deforming the latter, and even more so at the desired angle and configuration, is a difficult task.

Industrial frame made from profile pipe.

No, of course it’s easy to do if you have a pipe bender on hand, and the well-established production of greenhouses made from profile pipes uses exactly this device; bending the pipe in this case is quite simple.

Pipe bender for profile pipe.

But you must admit, not everyone has this device in their household.

  • Purchasing this product for the manufacture of one greenhouse is completely futile, unless, of course, you plan to deal with flexible profile pipes professionally in the future;

Bent element on a pipe bender.

  • Therefore, before you start making a greenhouse from a profile pipe, properly assess your capabilities;
  • Maybe it’s better for you to use another material for your greenhouse (see Do-it-yourself greenhouse made of PVC arcs: how to make it?).

Drawing begins with an assessment of possibilities

Or you can do it differently, drawing a greenhouse from a profile pipe; try to do it in such a way that you don’t have to bend individual elements.

In this case, you will not have to turn to specialized companies for help and spend additional money just to bend the pipe.

When we talked about the need for you to correctly assess your capabilities, we also had in mind the issue of welding.

If you don’t have a welding machine or you doubt your abilities as a welder and have nowhere to turn, do the following: draw up the drawings of a greenhouse from a profile pipe, simply create a frame that does not require welding at all.

In other words, it will be completely completed using fasteners. The advantage of this material is that the greenhouse frame made of a profile pipe allows this to be done.

As you can see, the material is quite versatile, allowing it to be used in various ways.

Bend the profile pipe

For those who want to build a greenhouse frame from a profile pipe with their own hands and at the same time need to bend the pipe without outside help, we will give two tips on how this can be done independently and at home.

Method one - cutting, welding

The first tip lies in your ability to use welding. You will need:

  • Welding machine;
  • Cutting machine;
  • Secure the profile pipe in a vice;
  • After this, accurately determine the bend location and the angle at which you need to bend the pipe;
  • On the side into which the fold will be made, it is necessary to apply transverse marks with a marker at strictly the same distance. The distance of the marks from each other directly depends on the bend radius. The steeper the arc required, the closer the marks are to each other and vice versa;
  • Using a cutting machine, you need to make cuts along the marks;
  • Next, bend the pipe to the required radius;
  • After this, all cuts must be welded together.

Accuracy comes first

With some effort and skill, you can get a pretty good bend.

Arches from a profile pipe.

Method two - sand comes to the rescue

As for the second method, we don’t need welding at all. We will need sand, not just earth or clay, but clean river sand.

Sand preparation

The sand must be cleaned of foreign impurities and sifted.

To obtain a better result, it can be washed with water. Then all the smallest foreign impurities will be washed out of it.

  • After the sand has dried, it must be calcined over a fire. This is done in order to remove the last remaining moisture;
  • This can be done on a metal sheet located above the fire;
  • The sand is laid in a thin layer and kept until steam stops emitting from it.

Good preparation - great results

The frame of the greenhouse is made from profiles of various sections. Suppose we need a greenhouse made of 20*20 profile pipe.

  • We take the workpiece that we need to bend, and make two plugs from wood for both ends of this workpiece;
  • In this case, the plugs should be of such a size that they would have to be inserted into the ends of our pipe using a hammer;
  • We hammer the first plug into one end;
  • We place the workpiece vertically, with the open edge on top;
  • We pour sand inside the pipe;
  • You need to pour it all the way to the edge. At the same time, you can tap the workpiece with the hammered end on the ground, thereby compacting the sand inside the pipe;
  • Once the sand has been poured in, a wooden plug must be driven into the open edge;
  • Now, by clamping the profile pipe in any place, it can be bent in the same way as a simple pipe.

The sand inside creates the necessary pressure, which prevents deformation of individual parts of the pipe.

The fold is smooth and of high quality. After the element is ready, you need to remove the plugs and pour out the sand. Problems may arise with this; the plugs fit tightly. In this case, they can be drilled out or simply burned out on fire.

If you need a greenhouse made from a 40*20 profile pipe, then you can do the same with this pipe.

Winter - fire with water

In winter, water can be used instead of sand.

  • Having hammered the plug on one side, water is poured into the pipe to such a level that only space remains for the second plug, after which the second plug is hammered in and the pipe is exposed to frost;
  • After the water turns into ice, you can successfully bend the profile pipe.

Our advice is that if you use the last method, carefully monitor the condition of the pipe while it is in the cold. Overexposure threatens to deform the pipe cross-section or rupture it.

Profile protection is the foundation

If the profile pipe you used to make the greenhouse frame does not have external protection from aggressive environmental influences, take care of it.

Having considered this issue, it became clear that greenhouses made of profile pipes, the production of a frame, individual elements or simply drawings are important and responsible work, where there are no trifles. One wrong calculation and all the work is in vain, or vice versa, the right decision will lead to an excellent result.

How to bend a profile for a greenhouse with your own hands

Profile pipes are represented by products that have a cross section of various shapes. These include round, flat-oval, square and oval pipes. This range of products makes it possible to create lightweight arched structures for various purposes.

They are used both in domestic buildings and in production. The most popular profiles include square products. A bent profile pipe of this cross-section makes it easy to attach any external covering to a flat wall.

Before you start bending profile pipes at home, you should familiarize yourself with their technical parameters and working methods.

The main difficulties when bending rolled profiles

Profile pipes produced by industry have certain geometric parameters, which are the determining factor for their plastic capabilities. The permissible minimum bending radius depends on the wall thickness of the rolled metal and the transverse area. This parameter gives the value of rounding the corrugated pipe without its mechanical damage.

When mechanically applied to rolled metal products, they are given full or partial bending. In this case, the metal profile is subject to a compression force (on the internal section) and a tensile force (on the outer surface). It is they that cause the main difficulties when bending metal profiles, which result in the following problems:

  • segments of pipe material when bending a metal profile product may lose their alignment, which will lead to the location of sections of rolled pipe in different planes;
  • the outer wall of the rolled profile may burst during stretching under the influence of increased load;
  • folds resembling corrugation may appear on the inside of the bent profile.
THIS IS INTERESTING:  How to determine the class of reinforcement

For corrugated pipes with a height (h) of up to 20 mm, the length of the bending section must be more than 2.5 × h. Rolled metal with a profile height of more than 20 mm is painlessly bent in areas with a minimum length of 3.5 × h. Determination of minimum bending radii can be determined from the table.

A correctly carried out technological process will allow you to obtain a perfectly even bend in the rolled product and will prevent the product from becoming crushed or bursting. When choosing the appropriate technology option, it is necessary to take into account the geometric parameters, as well as the characteristics of the material of the product. There are two ways to bend a profile pipe: with preheating and in a cold state.

Using Preheat

This operation is carried out for products with a profile height of more than 40 mm. Sand is poured inside the corrugated pipe, and wooden plugs are installed at the ends. Bulk material will allow the metal to receive uniform heating along its entire length. Special holes are made in one of the plugs to remove the gas formed during heating.

Sand for filling metal profiles is used purified, with medium grain size. If this is not available, material from a yard sandbox, which must be pre-prepared, is also suitable. To begin with, it is sifted through a sieve with cells no larger than 2.5 mm to remove small pebbles and gravel.

To obtain high-quality filler, it is additionally passed through cells with a size of up to 0.7 mm. This process will prevent sintering of dust inclusions in the sand when heated. The prepared material is calcined at a temperature of + 150 °C.

When pouring sand into a pipe, it is recommended to tap the surface for better distribution of the bulk material.

Before bending a profile for a greenhouse with your own hands, it is necessary to ensure the safety of the work being performed. Use special gloves made of thick tarpaulin that will protect your hands from contact with hot metal, and also place fire extinguishing equipment nearby.

The area of the product that needs to be bent is pre-annealed. The metal profile itself is fastened in a special clamp or in a vice along with a prepared template. The butt weld available on the rental must be located on the side of the product.

This will protect it from excessive loads when compressing or stretching the material.

The area previously marked with chalk is heated red-hot with a burner. A fully heated metal profile slowly and smoothly bends in one go. The applied forces must be strictly in one plane (horizontal or vertical). The cooled product is compared with the template, after which the sand filler is removed from it.

This method, which is easy to use in the garage, is used when it is necessary to obtain a single corner bend. Repeated heating of a metal product will reduce its strength. This should be taken into account when preparing various parts of the arched structure of a gazebo, greenhouse, canopy or other structure with your own hands at home.

Cold bending

When using cold technology, a bent metal profile is obtained with a height of up to 40 mm. Such rolled products can be bent either manually or mechanized. When the metal profile size is up to 10 mm, there is no need to fill it with sand.

You can bend the corrugated pipe without using preheating using additional devices. For small, thin-walled products, a flexible spring placed inside is used.

It allows you to bend rolled metal without mechanical damage.

Before bending the pipe profile, the edges of the spring are fixed with wire at the ends of the pipe. This will secure it inside the product and prevent it from jumping out under mechanical stress.

With this simplest method, the main condition must be observed: the spring must have a size only slightly smaller than the inside of the pipe. You can bend the corrugated pipe in this way without damaging the metal.

The correctly selected spring size will allow it to be removed at the end of the process quickly and easily.

The presence of a pipe bender will allow you to work with products with a minimum profile size of 10 mm and a maximum profile of 40 mm. Before bending a profile for a greenhouse with your own hands, determine the method of working with metal. A small simple experiment will show whether it will be necessary to preheat the metal or not.

To do this, the pipe end is clamped with a vice, and a profile with a large internal size is put on the other. If you can manually force rolled steel to bend, you can do the work without using preheating. In addition to manual or electric profile bending, numerous mandrels and bending tables are used.

They are suitable for producing arcs of aluminum or steel metal profiles with a maximum height of up to 10 mm.

Using a pipe bender

For significant volumes, to obtain a bent metal profile, you will need a special machine - a profile bender. With its help, bending of various profile pipes is easy and quick. Using a pipe bender, you can prepare a lightweight frame for a canopy, greenhouse, or other dacha structure. Sheet metal or corrugated sheets can be conveniently attached to the walls of the profile.

A powerful universal bending machine will be needed to work with large cross-section pipes. Structurally, it consists of three rollers, two of which have a fixed fixation. The changing position of the third roller forces the product to bend to the desired radial size. This powerful device is driven by a chain drive and an operator-rotated handle.

The presence of a large number of options for pipe bending devices provides the opportunity for their full use in the manufacture of numerous products. With their help, greenhouse frames, canopies and numerous arched steel structures are created. They make it possible to obtain a corrugated pipe bent to a certain degree, a metal profile bent into an arc, as well as a circle.

Making a profile bending machine yourself

Making a roll forming device with your own hands will allow you to significantly save personal funds. Using drawings and special videos, the process of creating a device will not take much time.

The availability of drawings provides an opportunity to add some improvements to the standard design.

 The presented images and dimensions for making a profile bender yourself can be adjusted to suit your personal needs.

How to bend a profile for a greenhouse with your own hands? — Handyman's Handbook

When making greenhouses for their site, every person always has the first and main question - what to make a greenhouse from, what material to use for this?

Today we will talk about how to make a greenhouse from a profile pipe.

How to bend a profile pipe for a greenhouse

4955 views

Owners of summer cottages who want to install a greenhouse or other device with metal shaped elements are thinking about how to bend a profile pipe. The use of radius lines reduces the overall load on the connecting nodes, which increases the overall strength of the metal frame.

It will not be possible to use classic pipe benders for building metal profiles for a simple reason - they have built-in rollers with an internal radius. It will not be possible to tightly press planes with square or rectangular sections to such a surface.

If someone tries to bend a profile pipe on this device, they will most likely break the workpiece or damage the working mechanism.

In addition, a professional pipe bender is quite expensive equipment, the cost of which is justified only if used frequently, and not for creating 1-2 greenhouses on the site.

Popular processing methods

To achieve a successful result and not spoil anything around, you will need auxiliary devices. The product in demand in such a situation is a special machine, which ultimately produces one product - a bent profile pipe. These devices are called profile benders.

The productivity of this machine is very high, and it is used on an industrial scale. Buying a machine that is too expensive to solve the problem of how to bend a profile pipe at home will be too expensive. For one-time or not too frequent work, a hand tool is suitable; it has not only rollers for round profiles, but is also equipped with devices for square or rectangular pipes.

If you need to obtain the radius one-time, but you don’t know how to bend the profile pipe yourself, then purchasing or manufacturing the device will turn out to be unprofitable. You will have to find a specialist and contact him, this way you can save a lot.

Using a pipe bender

During the early stages of construction, various work fixtures are required. In the process comes experience working with them and an understanding of the demand for other machines. If there are a lot of grape bushes growing, you need a new gate, a canopy, a gazebo, then in all these cases you need to be able to and know how to bend a profile pipe at home with a profile pipe bender.

The machine is configured based on the dimensional parameters of the workpiece (length and diameter), the required final radius, and the power of the installation.

Do not exceed the profile dimensions specified in the instructions for use, as this can lead to injury or failure of working devices.

Also, before bending a square pipe on a machine, the deformed area is well heated.

It is better to form a small radius closer to one of the free ends, since bending a profile pipe in the middle at home will be problematic, because more power is required.

VIDEO: Operating principle of a manual pipe bender

The principle of operation of a pipe bender is not only to change the direction of the axis of the profile pipe, but also to pull the metal cold. Since it is most often possible to bend a profile pipe without a pipe bender only by obtaining a corrugated surface at the transition point, thanks to the correct setting of the machine, the metal will be distributed almost evenly.

You can also bend the pipe using the hydrostatic method. To do this, liquid is pumped into the cavity under pressure, and then mechanical deformation begins. The internal filled cavity prevents the profile from quickly bending, which provides resistance from the inside, helping to gradually stretch the metal in the right places and prevent its rupture or uneven deflection.

Manual devices do not allow working with a cross-section above 40 mm. They also give a larger error.

Stationary machines allow bending with an accuracy of up to 10 mm, and there is a mechanical or electric drive. The disadvantage is the large mass of the installation.

Work at home without a machine

It will be possible to obtain the required bend from a profile pipe without special equipment. All you need is a grinder, a welding machine and yews. The algorithm will be as follows:

  • measure out the required pattern, and then draw a template on a free plane;
  • We apply the workpiece to it and mark the bending point on it;
  • we file three sides of the square profile, and on the fourth you will need to bend the pipe without a pipe bender, clamping the free end into a yew;
  • then we weld the resulting part in this position;
  • After welding, the seams are cleaned and the workpieces are mounted in the intended location.

Before welding a 2 mm profile pipe, the welder must use protective equipment. We experimentally set the current on the welding machine to use electrodes with a diameter of 3 or 2 mm. Large ones are not suitable here, since if you weld a profile pipe, for example, with a “four”, the cavity will simply be burned through.

Deformation with internal resistance

For those who are looking for methods on how to bend a pipe at home without corrugation, a method with an internal spring is suitable. We wind it on some suitable workpiece so that the outer side of the spring passes along a profile pipe with a gap of 1-1.5 mm along the entire length of the deformed part. We use wire with a diameter of 1-3 mm, depending on the parameters of the bent pipe.

We warm up the treatment area with a propane torch or blowtorch. Then we insert the pipe being processed into a pre-made matrix with an internal through hole that provides the required radius of curvature. The ratio of the size of the profile pipe and the hole must be taken into account.

The traditional option is one in which sand plays the leading role. It fills the free space inside the profile before bending the pipe. Both free holes will need to be plugged with wooden plugs. You will need clean dry sand. The size of the faction does not matter.

For a small diameter pipe, the use of preheating and river sand is mandatory, otherwise it will burst. Subsequently, they are burned out with a torch, and the sand is poured out.

It is also heated, put on a blank with the required radius and carefully bent. The pipe can cool either in natural conditions or in a bucket of water. This does not have any effect on quality and strength.

As you can see, even in artisanal conditions it will be possible to achieve maximum results. You just need to decide on the processing method and the necessary tools.

How to bend a profile for a greenhouse with your own hands

A greenhouse frame made of metal is the most reliable and durable, but instructions are needed on how to bend a pipe without a pipe bender.

Metal blanks can be transformed in different ways, but the choice of technology and devices depends on the thickness of the product with a round or rectangular cross-section.

Such parts will be needed for arched greenhouse structures under polycarbonate and glass roofs with a broken dome.
