The resulting film cannot be used as independent protection - only for painting. Accordingly, if the paint is of poor quality or has simply peeled off, this layer will not protect against corrosion.

On the shelves of our stores there are real compositions for independent galvanizing, of two types - for cold galvanizing (this process is also called zinc plating) and for galvanizing (the kit usually includes both an electrolyte and an anode), but they cost an order of magnitude more than converters.

We do not take cold galvanizing into account; it was originally invented for coating metal structures; it is not resistant to organic solvents and mechanical damage. We are interested in the galvanic method of applying zinc, and everything necessary for this process can be done at home.

So, will it be necessary to galvanize a section of the body?
Before you begin, you should remember to follow safety precautions when working with reagents: use a respiratory mask, rubber gloves, safety glasses, and carry out all manipulations outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

Stage one. Metal preparation. The surface of the steel must be completely free of rust and paint. Zinc does not adhere to rust, much less paint. We use sandpaper or special drill attachments.

  6. At the end of the process, the part is washed in a food solution or water.

Galvanic galvanizing does not at all involve “bathing” the body in an electrolyte. Individual car parts are galvanized using this method. During preparation, dirt and rust are removed, and phosphoric acid or rust destroyer should not be used.

Next, the piece of zinc is wrapped in cloth, preferably several times. Metal can be obtained, for example, from a disassembled round battery - the cup is made of just the necessary metal. The “plus” from the battery is connected to the cup, the “minus” remains on the machine’s ground. The wires are ideally connected with cigarette lighter clips, the main thing is that the fabric does not touch them.

A cup wrapped in a bandage is moistened with soldering acid or zinc chloride, and it is carefully moved over the workpiece. The metal will slowly settle on the surface.

The second way is to check the car using the VIN code. The response received will contain information about whether the body has been galvanized.

Well, the last method is a visual inspection of the car. If the body has damage to the paintwork, and underneath you see a characteristic gray layer, you can be sure that the car is galvanized. You can also inspect the bottom, fragmentarily removing dirt and a layer of anti-corrosion from it.

Some useful tips

The area to be treated must be thoroughly cleaned and sanded with fine sandpaper so that its surface does not have visible grooves.

Do not allow the positive electrode cable or its connection to come into contact with the electrolyte.

Washing with soda solution or any other alkaline solution is required. This is the only way to neutralize acid residues. Otherwise, a relapse of corrosion processes is possible.

The result is a galvanic bath, in which, if necessary, pieces of sheet steel and entire metal parts can be galvanized.
