Design of a trolley for a semi-automatic welding machine
Most semi-automatic welding machines have the ability to weld in a protective gas environment. In this case, a cart for the welding machine is required, which could transport not only the power source itself with cables, mask and electrodes, but also a heavy gas cylinder with hoses and reducers. We are talking about transporting equipment around a workshop or other work site.
Execution options
You can find several options for making do-it-yourself carts for semi-automatic machines. Some involve the transportation of only the welding machine, others provide for the transportation of gas cylinders.
All of them have from two to four wheels, with one or two rotating. Some transport devices only require pushing, while others require tilting and then pulling.
One of the simplest and most reliable options is a trolley for transporting gas receivers with a little modification.
Brackets for attaching the welding machine are welded to the device. A semi-automatic machine is installed on them; if there is a separate water cooling unit, then it is attached with belts from below to the welding equipment.
Design Features
The base for the gas cylinder is welded so that when the cylinder and trolley are standing vertically, the wheels also touch the floor. This creates additional stability of the structure.
The base itself does not have a collar on one side and looks like a scoop. This makes it easier to install the cylinder on the cart; there is no need to lift it and you can turn it over. To transport a semi-automatic machine, it is enough to tilt the cart, you get a wheelbarrow that is maneuverable and easy to transport .
The handle is made of a regular water pipe, bent in a shape that is easy to move. At the top and bottom of the semi-automatic trolley, mountings for cylinders are provided. They can be made in the form of clamps or regular chains with bolt fastening.
When working remotely from the mains, an extension cord is often required. In such cases, some craftsmen additionally install reel extension cords on the semi-automatic welding trolley.
Often small brackets are welded to the main frame for storing various welding tools; it all depends on the imagination and needs of the owner of the equipment.
Three-wheeled model
A welding cart on three or four wheels is a mobile box with niches for installing equipment and storing various tools.
It will be preferred by a welder who constantly works in one room, when there is no need to transport the semi-automatic welding machine to other sites. Additional parts boxes keep everything at hand.
Homemade carts of this type are much larger in size than two-wheeled ones. Usually they are welded from a 40x25 profile pipe. When making it, it is necessary to take into account:
- gas cylinder diameter;
- Dimensions of semi-automatic welding machine.
If the device is installed in the lower part of the cart, then there should be a shelf on top, completely covered with a metal sheet to prevent small objects from falling into the body of the welding machine. To securely fasten the cylinder and power source, it is necessary to provide clamps, belts or chains with bolt fixation.
For those who are going to use a semi-automatic welding machine not only in the workshop, it is recommended to use wheels with a diameter of at least 25 cm. A roller with a diameter of 12 cm can be used as a rotary one.
The entire product must be primed and painted with enamel. Before painting, it is necessary to weld the ends of the pipes and sand all the edges so that there are no burrs.
A 40x25 mm pipe is used in the manufacture of the base of the device; for the remaining components, a 20x20 mm profile can be used. If you don’t want to make a cart for a semi-automatic machine yourself, then you can always buy the finished product at a welding supply store.

How to make a semi-automatic welding machine with your own hands?
[Making a semi-automatic welding machine with your own hands] or repairing it is not difficult for people who are well versed in electronics, the main thing is to have the necessary set of parts and accessories at hand.
Unlike other types of welding units and equipment, an inverter semi-automatic machine is lighter in weight, which makes it convenient to use. Plus, you don't need a cart to move it.
If your knowledge of electronics is minimal, then it is better to give preference to production semi-automatic devices.
For example, at the moment semi-automatic welding machines “Sputnik” are in good demand.
A large model range allows you to choose exactly the “Sputnik” that can satisfy specific technical requirements.
This can be either a large-sized structure, which will require a trolley to move, or a portable device with minimal weight.
Welding models “Sputnik” 200 and “Sputnik” 350 have a weight of 80 kg and 120 kg, and are operated at 380 V.
But the semi-automatic welding machines “Sputnik” 2G and “Sputnik” M weigh 68 kg and 29 kg, and for their operation they require a regular electrical network of 220 W.
Both categories of semi-automatic machines allow you to perform high-quality car repair work, because they are designed to weld thin sheets of carbon steel.
A good option for production purposes could be a welding trolley designed for processing longitudinal seams of both profile and flat products.
The welding trolley appeared on the market relatively recently; its main area of use is welding steel I-beams, where the trolley is mainly needed.
The welding trolley has a simple but robust assembly and requires minimal maintenance. The control scheme is simple, so the work can be carried out by an unqualified technician.
The cart has a built-in control source, which eliminates the presence of wires on its surface, not including the power cable.
The welding trolley is equipped with a universal torch system, due to which it can be used for welding different materials.
The device of a homemade semi-automatic welding machine
The operating principle of an inverter device boils down to the following action: first, current is supplied to the rectifier, then its pulsating voltage smoothes the filter, resulting in a direct current at the output.
Through transistors, direct current is again converted into alternating current, but its frequency is not 50 Hz, but 20 Hz and higher.
In turn, the voltage decreases and can be 70-90V, the current receives up to 200 Amperes.
Due to this, homemade semi-automatic welding machines can compete with other similar types of equipment.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Selecting a semi-automatic welding machine
But repairing the former is considered difficult, since the system involves several complex electrical circuits.
The schematic diagram of an inverter-type semi-automatic welding machine may look like this.
a - throttle;
b - welding transformer; c - rectifier; 1 - magnetic circuits; 2 - textolite (for the transformer - insulating tape); 3 - wire or bus; 4 — diode VL200 (2 pcs.); 5 — diode B200 (2 pcs.); 6 — section of double radiators (2 pcs.); 7 - stud with nuts and washers (4 sets)
Since the operating principle of the inverter is based on changing alternating current, and not on the use of an EMF frequency converter, the semi-automatic welding device is compact in size and light in weight.
But in order to subsequently repair it, you need to have electrical engineering knowledge, which is confirmed by the diagram of a semi-automatic welding machine.
If an electric welder that produces a current of 160 Amps can weigh up to 19 kg, then an inverter with similar technical properties will have half the weight and produce a current of up to 250 Amps.
You can make both a simple inverter device and a semi-automatic welding machine yourself.
In addition to the power source, the semi-automatic inverter welding machine is equipped with: a torch, a wire feeder, a flexible hose for wire feed and gas supply under pressure.
Features of manufacturing a semi-automatic welding machine
It will be difficult to make an inverter-type semi-automatic machine yourself, because you will have to construct a wire feeder yourself.
But when the decision is made, all that remains is to stock up on tools and materials from the following list:
- transformer device with a current supply of at least 150 Amperes;
- wire feed mechanism;
- flexible hose for gas supply;
- bobbin with wire;
- control device.
The design of the feed mechanism requires close attention, since its use is necessary to feed the wire to the welding zone through the hose.
In this case, the feed speed of the electrode wire must correspond to the melting speed of the consumable. The quality of the seam made will depend on the wire feed speed.
Therefore, it is recommended to provide a speed regulator in the welding system in advance, which will subsequently allow welding to be carried out with wire made of different materials and having different diameters.
As a rule, welding work is carried out using electrode wire from 0.8 to 1.6 mm. The product is wound onto bobbins, then the inverter is charged for welding.
If the supply of welding wire to the torch is done in a fully automatic mode, it will be possible to reduce the time that should usually be spent on welding work.
The control device of the inverter semiautomatic device has a regulator to stabilize the current.
In turn, the current is controlled by a special electrical microcircuit - a microcontroller in pulse-width modulator mode.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Lessons on semi-automatic welding for beginners
The fill factor determines the voltage on the capacitor plates, which, in turn, determines the electric force of the welding arc.
Features of transformer preparation
To understand the principle of preparing a transformer for a homemade semi-automatic welding machine, it is worth taking into account that this is the same device that is used in a microwave oven.
The product consists of two reels with insulated copper wire. One winding is primary, the other is secondary. It is this that will serve as the basis for a homemade inverter.
Due to the different number of turns of the wire, current is first supplied to the primary bobbin, after which, through induction in the secondary bobbin, the voltage decreases and the current increases.
But if a transformer removed from a microwave oven is used to make an inverter semi-automatic welding machine, it needs to be remade.
The fact is that the device is capable of producing a voltage greater than will be necessary for the operation of the welding machine.
Therefore, you need to make sure that the current increases and the voltage decreases.
It is worth considering here: with a high current strength, fire of the electrode and damage to the metal material cannot be ruled out; a weak current will cause deteriorated welding quality.
To avoid having to repair the semi-automatic welding machine immediately after production, you need to make competent calculations.
You need to redo the secondary winding with your own hands - first the old winding is removed, then a new one is carefully wound, for which you need to take a wire covered with a layer of enamel.
Each turn must be laid one next to the other, and repairs must be carried out carefully so as not to harm the primary winding.
We will not consider the thickness of the wire used and the number of turns here, since these parameters will depend on the type of transformer being converted.
But to calculate the necessary parameters, you can use online calculators. As soon as the required number of turns has been completed, the winding must be coated with a current-insulating substance.
We select the case, combine the coils and install the cooling system
To assemble a semi-automatic welding machine yourself, you need to find the optimal housing option.
As a body for homemade inverter welding, you can take a suitable sized box made of sheet metal or plastic.
Transformers are installed one by one into the prepared housing, then their primary and secondary bobbins are connected.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Choosing a soldering station
The primary windings are connected in parallel, the secondary windings are connected in order.
This type of design will make it possible to accept current under a load of 60 Amps, while the output voltage will be 40V, this supply is quite enough to perform welding work in domestic conditions.
The cooling system of the semi-automatic welding machine is designed to cool the inverter, which gets very hot during operation.
In this case, you need to use the following arrangement of devices: we install fans in the case on its two sides opposite the electricity converters.
Fans can be purchased or used removed from an old computer system unit; when installed, they must work for exhaust.
At the same time, in order to remove heated air and bring in cold air, you need to make a couple of dozen through holes in the homemade body of the semi-automatic welding machine.
The welding holder and cable can be found in the store.
In addition, in the process of creating a semiautomatic welding machine, you will need a gas cylinder; you can buy it or take an old one from a fire extinguisher.
After connecting the inverter to the power supply, the microcontroller will automatically set the welding parameters.
If the wire voltage is less than 100V, then the device is faulty. In this situation, you will have to find and fix the problem.
Repair or modification of the electrode wire feed speed device
The advertised quality of welding machines usually significantly pumps up the wire feed regulator, so it often requires repair.
Failure of this element causes serious disruptions in the further operation of welding machines; at best, this is a loss of time and the need to replace the welding wire.
Since the wire gets stuck when leaving the device nozzle, you need to remove the nozzle and clean the contact area.
A failing wire feed control also indicates when the electrode wire is fed too quickly in large chunks or too slowly.
The control regulator may also stop working due to a mechanical failure.
The circuit that the wire feed control regulator has includes a pressure roller that has a wire pressure level regulator, and also a wire feed roller - it has 2 recesses for electrode wire with a diameter of up to 1 mm.
A solenoid is placed behind the regulator - it is used to control the gas supply.
Since the regulator is heavy in design, and is often mounted on the panel of the device with only a few bolts, we can say that the supply regulator is in the air.
For this reason, the design of the semi-automatic device may become distorted, resulting in the need for repair.
You can get rid of this drawback if you repair the semi-automatic device and make a stable stand for the regulator.

Trolley for semiautomatic welding machine with cylinder
» Articles » Trolley for semiautomatic welding machine with cylinder drawing
Good day to all, dear readers of Drive 2. after a long period of stagnation without work, not of my own free will, since all work depends directly on the weather, and when the weather opened up, I got sick, recovered, and the weather again had its whims, and everything was a sin by the will of the Almighty complain. So I decided to make a cart for a semi-automatic machine, it’s a pity to carry it in a place with a cylinder, and it costs a lot of money. Now the semi-automatic will be in comfort, I hope.
I took the wheels from cast rubber, I didn’t want to mess with the tubes, and the load is not small
I bought the profiles and started working for two days
wheel fitting
took a break from this
I work after lunch and so it lasted two days
made a glass
with wheels
after spray painting
finally the device is in place
I twisted my profile so I could pull it out
from the side
behind
and the door opens without problems
This is how the cart turned out, all in a pile and at hand. Thank you for looking at my work, good luck in your craft.

Trolley for semi-automatic welding machine – DRIVE2
Hi all!
I finally found the time to weld myself a cart for the welding machine. I thought for a long time what it should be like, look for other carts on Drive2 to make something similar for myself. What I liked the most was this welding cart.
The main criterion was ease of movement. The ability to combine a gas cylinder and the welder itself, and it was also intended not for the garage, but for the street.
This is what happened
I got myself this container for goods from the store. Don't ask where I got it))) I didn't steal it, that's a fact)))
I decided to make a cart out of it.
All wheels of this cart turn. I welded two so that they would only go straight, and two remained movable. This is better for moving around the area, in my opinion.
From the side posts I welded a frame where the cylinder will stand. I took the dimensions from the cylinder itself
A start
Then I began to think and assemble the cart as I went along. I had to figure out how and where to put the welder itself
Zoom
From the gratings I welded this structure for a welder. I wanted to put the device directly on the grill, but it fell through. So I welded a sheet of metal
This is what it looks like from the side with the device and the cylinder
I welded a fence on both sides and got compartments for tools, for example, for a grinder
I also bent and welded fences from below. Got two more branches
Welded a handle from an old baby stroller
On the stand with the cylinder I made hooks for carrying and masks. To have everything at hand
Back view
This is how the mobile welding station turned out. rolls around the area normally. Due to the lattice frame, the structure was not heavy. I'm happy
Thank you for your attention! Healthy criticism is welcome!
Good luck to all!

Trolley for semi-automatic from illiquid stock - DRIVE2
We moved here to a new workshop. We bought a new semi-automatic. Everything is cool, but where should I put it to make it comfortable to work with?
We started looking around, and our eyes fell on this:
Old frame from Gorynych
This is an old frame from an all-terrain vehicle I built a year ago. This summer I completely rebuilt his frame, and put the old heavy one, made of a square pipe, in the far corner, where it collected dust and took up space. I just couldn’t get my head around cutting it up or throwing it away. And so it finally waited in the wings :) A little plastic surgery, scraps of pipes and profiles, wheels from the construction market - and, voila, the cart for the semi-automatic machine is ready
Welding trolley from an all-terrain vehicle frame
The old engine protection sheet became a shelf. The footrests made excellent holders for a gas cylinder. The design is anti-crisis to the point of disgrace - only the wheels were bought, and the rest was taken from production waste or illiquid assets.
The cart turned out to be not very high, but due to the fact that the welding machine is tilted, it is convenient to operate.
I don’t even know whether to paint it or let it live like this

Trolley for semi-automatic machine. — DRIVE2
I was visiting the village and saw a cart for transporting a can of water. Since a well was drilled in the yard, this cart was no longer needed. But the wheels will come in handy for me. Carrying a semi-automatic machine around a 50 m2 garage with a 5 kg coil of wire is still a very tedious task. Yes, the wires always get tangled, then I put the mask somewhere, then I can’t find the side cutters for cutting the wire. I decided to make a cart. We used scraps left over from landscaping the garage.
My gas is supplied by a hose. a cylinder with K-18 is in the corner and there is a 20 m hose from it. Suspended nearby on a hook. I reeled it off as much as needed and didn’t have to carry a 40-liter cylinder with me. And now the semi-automatic machine rolls around the garage on its own. All that remains is to decide what to wrap the handle with and replace the bearings in the wheels.
The wheels and axle are cut off.
Blanks for the frame. Everything has been cleared.
The frame is welded to the axle.
Crossbars on which the semi-automatic machine will stand.
Front support.
Pen. What should I wrap it with?
The handle and hanger for wires and masks are welded.
This strange design is a jar for small things such as nozzles and dies, as well as for side cutters.
So the product is painted and the semi-automatic machine is installed.
View from the handle.
It is no coincidence that the wheels are forward. Pushing close is easier than pulling. The handle will rest against the car and you will definitely hit it with your elbow

How to wind a transformer for a semi-automatic machine with your own hands - Metalist's Handbook
Those craftsmen who are interested in welding work have often thought about how to build an installation for pairing elements and parts.
The homemade semi-automatic welding machine described below will have the following technical characteristics: mains voltage equal to 220 V; power consumption level not exceeding 3 kVA; works in intermittent mode; The adjustable operating voltage is stepwise and varies between 19-26 V. The welding wire is fed at a speed ranging from 0 to 7 m/min, while its diameter is 0.8 mm. Welding current level: PV 40% - 160 A, PV 100% - 80 A.
Practice shows that such a semi-automatic welding machine is capable of demonstrating excellent performance and a long service life.
Semi-automatic device for welding.
Preparing elements before starting work
As a welding wire, you should use a regular one, one that has a diameter within 0.8 mm, it is sold in a 5 kg reel. It will be impossible to manufacture such a semi-automatic welding machine without a 180 A welding torch, which has a Euro connector.
You can purchase it in a department specializing in the sale of welding equipment. In Fig. 1 you can see a diagram of a semi-automatic welding machine. For installation you will need a power and protection switch; you can use a single-phase AE circuit breaker (16A) for it.
When the device is operating, there will be a need to switch between modes; for this you can use PKU-3-12-2037.
Power supply circuit for a semi-automatic welding machine.
You can dispense with the presence of resistors. Their goal is to quickly discharge the choke capacitors. As for capacitor C7, in tandem with the choke it is capable of stabilizing combustion and maintaining the arc.
Its smallest capacity can be 20,000 microfarads, while the most suitable level is 30,000 microfarads.
If you try to introduce other types of capacitors that are not so impressive in size and have a larger capacity, then they will not prove to be sufficiently reliable, since they will burn out quite quickly.
To make a semi-automatic welding machine, it is preferable to use old-type capacitors; they need to be arranged in the amount of 3 pieces in parallel.
Power thyristors for 200 A have sufficient reserve; it is permissible to install them at 160 A, however, they will operate at the limit, in the latter case there will be a need to use quite powerful fans during operation. The B200 used should be mounted on the surface of an oversized aluminum base.
When making a semi-automatic welding machine with your own hands, the process must begin with winding the OSM-1 transformer (1 kW).
Diagram of a homemade device for winding transformers.
It will initially have to be completely disassembled; the iron should be put aside for a while. It is necessary to make a coil frame using textolite with a thickness of 2 mm; this need arises for the reason that its frame does not have a sufficient margin of safety.
The dimensions of the cheek should be 147x106 mm. You need to prepare a window in the cheeks, the dimensions of which are 87x51.5 mm. At this point we can assume that the frame is completely ready.
Now you need to find a Ø1.8 mm winding wire; it is preferable to use one that has reinforced fiberglass protection.
When making a semi-automatic welding machine with your own hands, you need to create the following number of turns on the primary winding: 164 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 15. In the gap between the layers you need to lay insulation using thin fiberglass. The wire must be wound with maximum density, otherwise it may not fit.
Winding diagram of a welding transformer.
To prepare the secondary winding, you need to use an aluminum busbar, which has glass insulation with dimensions equal to 2.8x4.75 mm; it can be purchased from winders. You will need about 8 m, but you need to purchase the material with some reserve.
Winding should begin with the formation of 19 turns, after which you need to provide a loop directed under the M6 bolt, then you need to make another 19 turns. The ends should have a length of 30 cm, which will be needed for further work.
When making a semi-automatic welding machine, you should take into account that if you may not have enough current at such a voltage to work with dimensional elements, then at the installation stage or during the further use of the device you can remake the secondary winding, adding three more turns to it per arm, in the end result this will give you 22+22.
A semi-automatic welding machine must have a winding that fits end to end, for this reason it should be wound very carefully, this will allow everything to be positioned correctly.
When using enamel wire to form the primary winding, it is then necessary to carry out treatment with varnish; the minimum time the coil is held in it is limited to 6 hours.
Diagram of the primary and secondary windings.
Now you can mount the transformer and connect it to the electrical network, which will allow you to determine the no-load current, which should be approximately 0.5 A, the voltage level on the secondary winding should be equivalent to 19-26 V. If the conditions match, you can put the transformer aside for a while and proceed to the next stage.
When making a semi-automatic welding machine with your own hands, instead of OSM-1 for a power transformer, it is permissible to use 4 units of TS-270, however, they have slightly different dimensions; if necessary, for this case, you can independently calculate the data for winding.
Choke winding
Making a case from an old power supply.
To wind the inductor, use a 400 W transformer, enamel wire Ø1.5 mm or larger.
Winding must be done in 2 layers, laying insulation between the layers, and the requirement must be observed, which is the need to lay the wire as tightly as possible.
When making a semi-automatic welding machine yourself, it is permissible to wind the choke on iron borrowed from an old tube TV.
You can use a ready-made transformer to power the circuit. Its output should be 24 V at 6 A.
Housing assembly
At the next stage, you can begin assembling the installation body. To do this, you can use iron, the thickness of which is 1.5 mm; the corners must be connected by welding. It is recommended to use stainless steel as the base of the mechanism.
The role of the motor can be the model that is used in the windshield wiper of a VAZ-2101 car. It is necessary to get rid of the limit switch, which works to return to the extreme position.
The bobbin holder uses a spring to obtain braking force; for this, you can use absolutely any one that is available.
The braking effect will be more impressive if it is influenced by the compressed spring, for this you have to tighten the nut.
In order to make a semi-automatic machine with your own hands, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:
- enamel wire;
- wire;
- single-phase machine;
- transformer;
- welding torch;
- iron;
- textolite
Making such an installation will be a feasible task for a craftsman who has familiarized himself with the recommendations presented above in advance. This machine will be much more profitable in terms of cost compared to the model that was produced at the factory, and its quality will not be lower.

Do-it-yourself cart for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder | mk-soyuz.rf
A semi-automatic welding machine has a lot of advantages, however, when you need to move it, you will have to carry a carbon dioxide cylinder along with the device along with hoses and a reducer.
Its weight, even when empty, is more than 50 kg, and if fully filled, up to 80 kg. It is not advisable to use cylinders with a small volume, since they will have to be refilled frequently.
Therefore, even if cases of equipment transfer are not frequent, there is a reason to buy or make a cart for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder.
Design features and requirements for trolleys
Unlike the cart for the welding machine, the design for the semi-automatic machine is equipped with a place for installing a cylinder. Accordingly, a mount for hoses and a box for storing filler wire are provided. As the total weight of the equipment increases, the structure becomes more durable. The optimal load capacity is 250 kg.
The trolley for a semi-automatic machine must meet the following requirements:
- The cylinder is attached at the bottom and at the top. Instead of chains, it is better to use clamps, as they provide rigid fixation.
- The shelf above the inverter is made solid so that small objects do not fall into the device body.
- Wheels with a diameter of at least 20 cm. Otherwise, it will be difficult to overcome obstacles on uneven surfaces.
- Tires must be solid rubber.
- The diameter of the wheel hubs is at least 18 mm. A smaller axle may bend or even break.

How to learn welding. First welding project: DIY welding cart
If you've just got the urge to learn welding yourself, have bought an inverter welding power supply, protective gloves, a mask, and have already burned a few electrodes on scraps of metal for training purposes - now you're ready to begin your first welding project.
This point in your self-training plan, jotted down orally, is one of the most important, since every self-respecting welder should do something with his own hands. And they usually start with what should help every master when he is busy with his work.
Why not start by making a simple welding trolley, on which you can place an inverter machine, a shielding gas cylinder, fold the cable, electrode holder (gun, torch), ground terminal, tool, etc.? This will be a good experience for every novice welder who wants to practice not only welding but also cutting metal.
If you decide with us that it will be much cheaper and more useful to take on the task of creating a welding cart yourself, then you need to take several steps to bring the idea to life.
Step 1: Get the metal
At the nearest metal warehouse you can purchase the necessary rolled metal. In our case, old metal beds and several MDF sheets thrown into a landfill helped a lot. As you can see, visiting such places can greatly help in finding the necessary materials, and the trip does not need to be shelved, since the scrap you need may have already attracted someone else! There is even a kind of romance in this - giving old unnecessary things a completely new life!
Bed frames will be useful for our work. The frames are assembled from corners that are perfect for our future cart. In addition, the material from which the angles are made, low-carbon steel, can be welded without restrictions by all types of welding.
You can get rid of the rivet heads using a grinder with a thin cutting disc, and knock out the remaining part of the rivet using a large plumbing punch and a hammer. We used a wooden beam and a clamp to make the process more comfortable.
Bench punch
Step 2: Marking
First make a cut at a 90 degree angle
Then set aside a 45 degree angle
For our inverter and a small cylinder with protective gas for it, we decided to weld a cart, which basically consists of two equivalent shelves measuring 280 x 710 mm.
To mark the shelves you will need a special marker that draws on metal. To accurately mark a 45° angle, we recommend using a Speed Square protractor from Swanson (or a Swanson square, in short, a square combined with a protractor).
Swenson's square
Make all cuts with a thin cutting wheel. Be careful when working with an angle grinder. They can be very dangerous to work with. Follow the safety instructions supplied with the tool.
Most importantly, do not remove the protective cover of your angle grinder and do not work without the protective cover! Do not put pressure on the tool while working; it should sharpen the metal “under its own weight,” both when cutting and when grinding.
The Bulgarian woman doesn't like being put under a lot of pressure, just like people!
See photo for details.
Step 3: Cutting
To carry out the cutting, we secured the corners using a clamping device so that they were securely pressed to the table. Next, all cutting is done by hand.
In the past we have used a saw with an abrasive cut-off blade for cutting, but from experience it is good for rough cuts. In addition, it is not cheap.
Using a manual angle grinder, you can still make as precise a cut as possible. As a last resort, you can assemble a stand for an angle grinder for more precise cuts.
Mounting saw
Step 4: Lick the Edges
Sharp edge
edges are cut at an angle of 45 degrees
The ends of the corners were slightly polished on a sharpener. Paint was removed from the areas where welding was to be done using a grinder and a “hairy” circle.
Step 5: Fitting Shelf Elements
Check that the edges of the corners align exactly with each other. If you find any inaccuracies, “correct” the edges on the sharpener.
Step 6: Tacking and Welding
Fix all corners using tacks (a tack is a small welding point, not a full-fledged seam). Make sure once again that everything is connected smoothly and weld the joints with a continuous seam.
Step 7: Weld Two Shelves
After welding they should be even. If there are metal deformations, you need to straighten it so that the shelves are identical to each other!
Step 8: Preparing the Vertical Frame Elements
Cut the corners to the required length, following steps 2, 3 and 4, but at a 90° angle.
Step 9: Assembling the Cart Frame
Using magnetic squares, assemble the structure by tying the vertical supports to the bottom and top shelves. Place potholders as shown in the photo. At this stage, the structure is still movable (but already fixed) and it is not too late to correct any distortions, inaccuracies and set everything straight. Once you apply the welds, it will be impossible to fix anything.
Step 10: Welding
Now the frame stands rigidly on strong welds.
Step 11: But you don’t need to do this!
At some point it seemed to us that the welding seams did not look very good from an aesthetic point of view. We decided to clean the seams using a grinder.
Big mistake!
A little later we realized that the “refining” operation had weakened all the welds. Several seams were cracked, but this became apparent after the entire frame was painted and installed on the wheels. Therefore, I had to return to the previous step. We stripped the paint down to bare metal and re-welded the outer sides of the joints and the inner ones.
The photo shows what kind of preliminary preparation was carried out.
Step 12: Stick the Axle
To attach the two large rear threadless wheels that we purchased from the supermarket, we used a steel rod (rod) with a diameter of 16 mm. The rod was cut to the required length and, closer to its ends, holes were made on a drilling machine for attaching cotter pins, which, in fact, will hold the wheels in place.
Step 13: Weld the axle to the frame
We did not skip this step, despite the fact that it symbolizes the devil’s dozen and, as is commonly believed, nothing good can happen when meeting this number. But we succeeded despite popular superstitions!
Due to the fact that the wheels at the back and front are radically different from each other, and it is still necessary to give the cart an even horizontal position, the axle was raised by ≈ 6 mm. A wooden block was used to hold the rod at the required height.
Thus, the axle was welded to the frame at the top and bottom.
The welds were not of the best quality, but they will cope with their main task, holding the rod on the frame! We had to make several passes to fill the gap between the round rod and the flat frame.
Step 14: Everything is going well, but there is a caveat
We were just about to weld two galvanized washers when we suddenly remembered how harmful zinc vapor is to the human body.
It would seem that there is so much galvanizing on these washers, but still it would not be superfluous to take precautions! Although our man doesn’t give a damn, he had to repeatedly deal with sad examples. Experienced welders in Bursa were given the opportunity to weld brass (remember that brass is an alloy of copper and zinc).
Nobody, of course, even thought about using any personal protective equipment (at least they put on respirators) and everything was cooked as is. After which in the evening everyone present in the room at the time of welding felt extremely bad. Poisoning!
Zinc vapor is extremely toxic and harmful even in small quantities! We did not use a respirator to protect the respiratory system. Holding the washers in pliers, we simply removed the coating using a grinder. The washers were then welded in place. It should also be noted that we are working in a garage with good ventilation next to an open gate.
Step15: Handle
The handle was made from a ø16 mm rod from scraps of metal left over from the manufacture of the axle. The pieces can be cut as desired. We placed them on the table and secured them with magnets.
Step 16: Welding the Handle
All that remains is to weld all the parts together. We placed potholders on one side of the handle, then on the other. Then everything was welded with a continuous seam.
Step 17 Painting the frame
The frame was cleaned of dirt and corrosion to bare metal, after which a layer of metal primer was applied. After the primer had dried, we painted the frame with gray spray paint.
Step 18: Correcting Weak Welds
As noted above, after painting we realized that the welded joints did not hold the entire structure well. We stripped off the paint in the places where we planned to weld and welded them. Now the frame is rigid.
Step 19. Installing shelves
We made the shelves from 19mm MDF fiberboard only because we found them in a landfill for free along with the metal we needed for the job. They can always be replaced with a more durable material, such as plywood or something else.
But at the moment, MDF is coping well with the “obligations” assigned to it. In the back of the top shelf there is a hole cut into which the gas cylinder will be installed. The shelves are simply laid in place without the use of any additional fasteners.
We adjusted the shelves to fit the frames and painted over the areas that had been finished by welding.
Step 20: Screw on the wheels
The large rear wheels are mounted on cotter pins through holes in the axle.
The front "trolley" wheels are attached to the front frame with screws.
Step 21: The car is ready!
Now there is room for our welding inverter, cylinder and cable twister! There was also a place for the entire inverter under the folding table.

Trolley for semi-automatic welding machine – Machine tools, welding, metalworking
Moving a heavy gas cylinder for welding work requires efficiency, accuracy, and compliance with the required safety measures.
In order to fulfill these requirements, it is necessary to use a special device, the so-called semi-automatic welding cart with a cylinder, which can be purchased ready-made or made independently.
There is a special regulation of supervisory agencies, which indicates that to ensure efficient and safe work with welding equipment, a trolley for a semi-automatic welding machine is required.

Characteristics of welding vehicles
Mobility is the main criterion for the work of a welder, who must move a gas cylinder from one place of work to another without the use of special machines and devices. Currently, many manufacturers offer various design solutions for mobile options for moving burners for gas equipment. The main advantages of using a trolley for a welding machine with a cylinder:
- Stable control mode increased power. A number of designs provide special devices that automatically weld corner components and joints in the top-down direction, as well as in the reverse mode, bottom-up, without using a guide rail.
- High quality workmanship. The leg parameter for the seam connection of a do-it-yourself semi-automatic welding trolley varies in the range from 8 to 15 mm. The control mode is carried out using the so-called. vibration regulator, the speed of which can be adjusted on a special dashboard. High-quality and stable mode of movement of the trolley structure for the welding machine is ensured due to the perfectly even fillet weld of the structural part of the movement system.
- A universal self-propelled trolley for welding equipment can accommodate several options for gas cylinder equipment, and there is a built-in control panel that allows you to adapt the operation of the self-propelled structure relative to the type of cylinder used for welding work. If necessary, the control panel allows you to “distribute” gas to several consumers simultaneously.
- Versatility. The built-in frame allows the use of roller guide mechanisms on any side of the self-propelled structure for transporting gas cylinders.
Technical data of trolleys for welding equipment
Manufacturers offer several options for a self-propelled trolley for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder, the dimensions of which depend on the dimensional data of the gas cylinder equipment. The classic specification for this type of trolley is as follows:
There are no uniform regulatory requirements for making a cart for a welding machine with your own hands; at the same time, there are certain industry standards that allow craftsmen to make a self-propelled structure.
In addition, there are also special carts designed for combined mobile movement of both semiautomatic welding machines and cylinder equipment.
That is, on one side there is a welding machine, on the other there is a cylinder installation.
On the Internet you can see various drawings of a trolley for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder, but at the same time, it is necessary to select a transport unit based on the individual working conditions of the welder and the general technology of welding work.
Drawing of a trolley for a semi-automatic machine
Imported analogues have improved options for operating the transport unit, which has a hydraulic control principle, relief characteristics of the cylinder mounting panel and other characteristics.
The cart has special compartments that are designed for winding cables and other wires of electric welding equipment.
Additionally, the work trolleys are equipped with hydraulic skids, which ensure easy loading of cylinders onto the truck platform.
Technological components of a trolley for a semi-automatic welding machine
Many manufacturers produce standard sizes of carts to ensure the transportation of welding equipment.
All components of the transport unit are made exclusively from material with a metal base, namely sheet steel, which has a thickness of 1 mm.
The profile design can be either rectangular or circular. At the bottom of the transport unit there are wheels as the main mechanism for moving on a flat surface.
"Note!
All main components of the trolley are treated with a powder composition that prevents corrosion and premature wear.”
Manufacturers produce standard versions of trolleys, but if necessary, customers can order their own individual sizes for the transport complex of the mechanism for moving cylinders and welding equipment.

How to make a cart for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder?
A medium-power semi-automatic welding machine itself weighs a lot. In addition, a cylinder with protective gas, a hose, a torch, wires, and a mask must be delivered to the welding site. The tool for preparing the welding zone, cleaning seams, a supply of welding wire, and other consumables also takes up space and weighs a lot.
A semi-automatic cart is useful for this. Everything you need for work is conveniently placed on it. Such products are mass-produced and have two, three or four wheels. Experienced craftsmen are not satisfied with industrial designs; they design and independently make carts “for themselves.”
Characteristics
The purpose of such equipment is to ensure the mobility and convenience of the welder, to reduce the loss of time preparing for welding, dragging tens of kilograms of equipment, tools, and materials. With the help of a trolley, a full-fledged mobile welding station is created, which contains everything that is needed to perform a weld anywhere in a workshop, workshop or construction site.
The main characteristics of such trolleys are as follows:
- Load capacity . The structure must support the weight of the welding machine, cylinder, hose, wires, consumables, and auxiliary tools. The total easily adds up to a hundredweight, or even more.
- Sustainability . The design of the trolley must prevent it from tipping over, even if a passing assistant touches it or the welder pulls strongly on the hose.
- Capacity . In addition to the welding machine and gas cylinder, a large number of large and small-sized items need to be placed in convenient trays, boxes or hangers. They should not wobble or fall out while moving.
- Dimensions and maneuverability . A trolley for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder should take up little space, the dimensions of the vehicle should allow it to pass through passages up to 70 cm and turn almost at a right angle.
In addition, the device should have easy movement and a comfortable handle.
Technical data
Manufacturers market several basic types of welding trolleys. Their main dimensions are determined by the dimensions of the welding machine and gas cylinder.
Typical parameters look like this:
- weight: 12-15 kg;
- overall dimensions: 1.25x0.35x0.71 m
- size of the platform for the device: 0.28x.45 m.
These parameters are specified based on the capacity and number of cylinders with which the mobile post needs to be equipped, as well as the selected layout.
The most popular are two of them:
- two-wheeled layout , a large-capacity cylinder is placed vertically, the platform for the device is located above the axis and parallel to it;
- three- or four-wheeled layout , dimensions are determined by the dimensions of the platform for the welder, cylinders of small or medium capacity are placed under the platform.
Two-wheeled options are created on the basis of a standard trolley for transporting 40- and 50-liter gas cylinders; a bracket holding the platform for the device is welded onto their vertical handle
Three- and four-wheeled models are created on the basis of mobile tool cabinets, to which cylinder mounts are added on the side or bottom.
To increase convenience and improve the working conditions of the welder, the cart is equipped with compartments for storing small tools, reels for winding and storing hoses and wires, etc.
Technological components
For the manufacture of trolleys, a metal profile of round or rectangular cross-section is used. For the platform, steel sheets, expanded metal mesh or a transverse set of corners are used. The blanks are welded together, then cleaned and painted with powder paints to protect the structural elements from corrosion.
The trolley must be equipped with a device that prevents its independent movement. For two-wheelers, this is a heel support; for three- or four-wheelers, wheels with a built-in pressure brake are used.
Additional requirements
Depending on the characteristics of the technological process that will be provided using the trolley, additional requirements for its design may be put forward, for example:
- additional shelf for placing a water cooling device;
- additional places for cylinders;
- hangers for replaceable burners;
- waterproof cups for storing rod electrodes;
- oil and acid resistant wheels.
5. Execution options
There are many options for the design of trolleys for semi-automatic welding machines.
Some of them are designed to transport only the apparatus, but more popular models are those that simultaneously transport a gas cylinder or cylinders, and all other items necessary for welding.
Two-wheeled options, made on the basis of a trolley for transporting cylinders, are distinguished by the greatest load capacity and maneuverability ; thanks to the large volume of gas cylinders, they provide greater autonomy. They are also distinguished by greater maneuverability and maneuverability.
Three- and four-wheeled models can only move on a flat floor or asphalt; even a 10-centimeter bump or high step can become an insurmountable obstacle for them. To increase maneuverability, the front wheel (or wheels) are made swivel. The main advantage of such structures is their high stability, ease of operation and access to contents.
Features of two-wheel design
The platform supporting the cylinder from below is made in such a way that it turns into a stand and support for the entire structure when the cylinder is placed vertically. It also acts as a reliable brake.
The two-wheeled trolley for transporting semi-automatic weapons has two positions -
- working, when the base is on the ground;
- transport, when the cylinder is tilted, the base is lifted off the ground, the structure can roll on wheels.
Drawing of a frame of a two-wheeled design. A bracket for mounting a semi-automatic machine is hung on the frame in a convenient place
The bracket for the semi-automatic machine is welded to the handle. Since the trolley tilts at an angle of up to 45° during transportation, the device is secured to the bracket with straps
Additional brackets for boxes with tools and equipment, hangers for coiled wires and other parts are welded to the handle.
Homemade cart for semi-automatic welding machine
A simplified design made from scrap materials will allow you to transport a semi-automatic welding machine around the workshop, and place tools and all the little things that a welder may need on the second tier shelf. At the end there is a mount for a five-liter cylinder, gas hoses and welding wires.
A do-it-yourself cart does not have the industrial gloss of finished products, but is fully functional and allows you to organize a mobile welder’s workplace “with all the amenities .
Materials you will need:
- steel profile 20*20, trimmings of 1 m, - 6 pcs.;
- expanded metal mesh – 0.5 m2;
- frame of an old metal chair;
- cast wheels with a diameter of 8-15 cm - 2 pcs.
The sequence of work is as follows:
- cut the chair frame, prepare: 2 U-shaped legs, two L-shaped halves from the back;
- weld a rectangular frame for the base from a metal profile;
- weld the legs to each other at right angles;
- weld L-shaped elements,
- weld the mesh to the frame;
- strengthen the structure with bevels;
- weld a platform under the cylinder from below;
- weld or bolt the wheel mounting pads.
All welding seams must be cleaned and degreased, and the surface of the cart must be painted with powder enamel.

How to make a cart for a semi-automatic welding machine
A semi-automatic welding machine has a lot of advantages, however, when you need to move it, you will have to carry a carbon dioxide cylinder along with the device along with hoses and a reducer.
Its weight, even when empty, is more than 50 kg, and if fully fueled - up to 80 kg. It is not advisable to use cylinders with a small volume, since they will have to be refilled frequently.
Therefore, even if cases of equipment transfer are not frequent, there is a reason to buy or make a cart for a semi-automatic welding machine with a cylinder.
What to look for when purchasing
Before going to the store, you need to measure the dimensions of the welding machine and cylinder, determine their weight along with auxiliary equipment (hose, gearbox, cable, electrodes, etc.). Having this data, special attention when purchasing is paid to:
- Load capacity. It is better to choose it with a reserve.
- Dimensions. A cart that is too large will be awkward to move in a small space.
- Quality of coverage. Preference should be given to models painted with powder paint.
- Wheels. If you plan to move equipment on open ground, for example in a country house, their diameter is selected from 25 cm.
It is desirable to have drums for winding the cable and hose. A shelf and a toolbox will not be superfluous.
It is better to avoid Chinese models, as they are made of thin-walled materials, so the metal bursts at points of high load.
Before you go to the store, you need to measure the dimensions of the welding machine and cylinder
DIY trolley
It is made from sections of round or profile pipes, metal plates and corners. In general, from what is at hand. Most often, in home-made structures, a profile pipe with a cross-section of 40×25 mm is used for the frame, and 20×20 for other elements. It is not worth borrowing cart drawings from the public domain as a guide. It is better to use them as a sample when drawing up your sketch with dimensions corresponding to the existing equipment.
Making a cart begins with cutting the workpieces using a grinder or a hacksaw. Burrs are removed from the ends. First of all, the frame is welded, and then the inverter mounting brackets, the platform for the cylinder, and the shelf. If welds are made using filler wire, it must match the composition of the metal being welded.
The finished structure is placed on its side and prepared plates with wheels are welded to the bottom. If the frame is strong enough, then the wheels can be welded directly to it. All seams are cleaned with a grinder or grinder attachment.
The structure is covered with a primer and, after it dries, painted with enamel.
If welding work is to be performed at a considerable distance from the power supply, the cart should be equipped with a drum extension, which is easy to make with your own hands.
Conclusion
Sometimes novice home craftsmen, having learned how to make a cart on their own, abuse the installation of additional shelves and drawers, supposedly necessary to ensure that everything they need is at hand. Some craftsmen even manage to attach a folding table with folding legs. The result is carts that require outside help to move.
