How to repair hot water pipes using cold welding - Prof Pipes
Have you heard of this method of welding materials called “cold welding”?
Then you will be interested to read information about this technique and find out how effective this technique is.
Thanks to historical excavations, it became known that similar technology was used in ancient times to create works of art of the ancient period.
The National Museum of Ireland displays gold boxes made in the Early Bronze Age as exhibits.
The craftsmen used cold welding techniques in their work.
In the mid-forties of the last century, the method began to be used in countries with developed industry.
In the Soviet Union, cold welding began to be used in the 50s of the 20th century.
At the moment, this technique has found wide application for welding the following metals:
How can welding be cold ? Is the process really possible without heating, special solutions or electric current?
It turns out it can. And there is no magic in this. The method is based on plastic deformation, which destroys the brittle oxide film, which is the main obstacle to the conjugation of metals.
We have all had to, at least once in our lives, go through a problem related to the repair of heating system pipes, expansion tank and other components of the pipeline.
Ten to fifteen years ago, any heating circuit with an expansion tank made of aluminum (welding technology) and radiators were repaired only by hot welding.
The modern market today offers an almost instant and at the same time very effective way to eliminate leaks in all devices of the heating system.
There is no need to use welding at high temperatures. A completely new technology has replaced well-known techniques.
Now cook:
- can be done using cold welding . In this way, not only metal, but also polymer products are connected.
To put it in more understandable terms, cold welding, at its core, is epoxy glue, similar in composition to putty.
Very often, manufacturers include a strengthening additive in the form of steel powder into its structure.
The substance has good resistance to aggressive environmental influences, and it fully retains all its characteristics at temperatures up to +260 degrees.
Cold welding composition
- All existing positive qualities of epoxy resin are transferred to cold welding. Epoxy resin . This material is characterized by good ductility. It fills all the crevices and other imperfections of the surface being treated. Epoxy has another characteristic feature, and it is that it hardens when mixed with various thickeners.
- Filler.As a rule, various modifiers, plasticizers, sulfur and metal act as an added substance intended to improve the technical properties of the main ingredient. With the help of a filler, the mixture hardens and hardens much faster. Cold welding also acquires a number of positive properties, namely:
- resistance to humid environments,
- the ability to withstand a large number of cycles of sudden temperature fluctuations without destruction.
In cold welding intended for heating radiators, metal chips must be used as a filler.
For plastic pipes, sulfur is added to the binder component.
Cold welding is a two-component mixture.
All elements are combined into one whole a few minutes before use.
Types of adhesives
Many ordinary people doubt the effectiveness of this method of repairing heating radiators.
But, as can be seen from practice, this is not true.
The wear resistance of the resulting seam or joint depends on how correctly the connecting element is selected.
Systematization by physical content:
- fluid mixtures
- plastic mass.
If you decide to buy a liquid product, pay attention to the packaging, it should contain 2 tubes. One with an elastic substance, the other with a hardener.
They are mixed immediately before eliminating the leak in the plastic pipe at the junction.
Please note! The mixture must be consumed within 20 minutes, otherwise it will thicken and become unusable.
Before use, plasticine should be kneaded well. If you don't need all the material, you can cut it, but only crosswise.
Experts strongly advise using cold welding to restore only those materials for which it is intended.
On the packaging of the composition, the manufacturer always indicates the temperature that the mixture can withstand (in most cases, this is 260 degrees Celsius).
If these parameters are observed, the seam will remain strong for a long time.
There are cold welds on the market that can withstand much higher temperatures (up to 1300 degrees Celsius).
This adhesive is used for surfaces exposed to very high heat.
Positive aspects of use.
- Ease of use . The composition can be used by a person who has not previously had any experience in plumbing;
- The quality of the resulting seam does not depend on the speed of your actions.
- There is no need to use special tools and equipment (read about couplings for connecting HDPE pipes here).
- Energy consumption is kept to a minimum.
- The material has fire-fighting properties.
- Ability to repair tanks containing explosives.
- There is no surface tension of the material in the weld area.
- Low material cost.
Negative sides.
- Using cold welding, only metals with high ductility can be joined.
- During operation , the material is subject to deformation.
- Using this method, parts of certain shapes and sizes are joined.
- In order for the work to be completed efficiently, a large area of metal must be used.
- Cold welding is a temporary solution to the problem.
Methods of use
Before you get started, you need to prepare everything you might need:
- welding material,
- acetone,
- sheet of sandpaper,
- if necessary - clamps,
Step-by-step instructions for welding plastic heating pipes:
- the first thing to do is to carefully prepare the surface of the material to be repaired. The pipe sections must first be treated with sandpaper and then degreased. Irregularities on the product will increase the level of adhesion to the adhesive. Residues of fat, when entering into a chemical reaction with the components cold welding will worsen its characteristics;
- Next, we determine the exact permissible deviation of the perpendicularity of the edges. If your heating system contains pipes with a cross-section of 20 - 40 mm, the tolerance should not exceed two millimeters;
- in order to accurately determine the size of the surface to be treated, half the length of the coupling must be measured at the ends of the hollow product;
- using these marks, remove a thin layer of material from the pipe (maximum 0.2 mm) and remove all burrs;
- prepare the adhesive composition: mix all the ingredients until a homogeneous mass is obtained. When using plasticine-like mastic, you need to wet your hands in clean water. If this is not done, the paste will stick to the skin. You need to work with liquid compositions very quickly;
- We apply the finished mixture to the surface to be repaired. To improve the gluing effect, it is worth using a special clamp. The instructions supplied with the product indicate how much force can be applied to the seam.
A pipeline that has been repaired by cold welding is put into operation no less than 8 hours after welding.
Repairing a cast iron radiator
In this case, it is necessary, first of all, to prepare the surface of the product - it must be clean, dry and grease-free.
The procedure can be done with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Then take a small piece of the composition in the form of plasticine and knead it with your fingers.
You should get a ball measuring 20 - 25 mm.
to the damaged area and press it down with a screwdriver or a thick rag.
The ball must be held in this position for 3-5 minutes.
The mixture will harden completely in 35 - 40 minutes due to the polymerization process.
The battery will be ready for use only after 24 hours.
At temperatures below +5 degrees, it is not recommended to use cold welding. When handling mixtures, you need to wear gloves and safety glasses.
If your home has a single-pipe heating system, then before you begin repairing the damaged area, you need to turn off the water supply
When eliminating a fistula on a hollow object, it is best to use a liquid composition that soaks pieces of fabric and wraps the damaged areas.
Using this method, you can reliably caulk the leak and wait until the end of the heating season.
Only with the help of a specialized product with characteristics that allow the mixture to work under the influence of high-temperature liquids will you get a high-quality connection.
Using such compositions, you can seal a fistula in a riser with hot water.
Remember! Cold welding is a temporary measure to eliminate leaks in heating radiators.
In this way, small damage can be eliminated.
At the first opportunity, the leak should be repaired using semi-automatic welding or an inverter.
When working with adhesives, issues related to personal safety should come first.
Worth knowing! It is impossible to revive complex joints by cold welding.
It is necessary to ensure free access to the repair site.
Do not forget that this composition can only be used as a gluing element. It will not withstand even the slightest pull-off impact.
Therefore, this technique can only be used for its intended purpose, and it is necessary to correctly calculate the conditions for using the mixture.
Cold welding for heating radiators must be of high quality. Otherwise, the seam may not hold up and then the cost of repairs will be too high.
