Today I want to tell you about a method for cutting sheet metal with a grinder, which I have been using myself for a long time. This method makes it quite easy and accurate to cut sheet metal.

This method is quite simple and reliable. Previously, I marked the line of the future cut with coated lace, but no matter how carefully I tried, the cut still did not turn out perfect - after all, we are people, not robots. Then I realized that in order for it to turn out well and evenly, I need to guide the cut along the guide. I started using profile pipes or a corner for this, it became easier and more convenient. But the best type of guide (in my opinion) is the same sheet metal, namely any smooth factory side.

This is how I cut sheet metal. Using a tape measure, I mark the required size and place the guide side of the sheet on these marks, clamping it with the bottom sheet with clamps. And this way it will be quite easy to cut - there is no need for unnecessary stress and constant monitoring of the grinder disk, it itself follows the desired trajectory.

Today we had to cut quite a lot - not only across the sheet, but also along it, using the same technology.

Then we clean off the sharp burrs with a small grinder with a 125 grinding disc.

The result is a fairly high-quality cut, which will never be possible if you do not use a guide for the grinder disk.

The photo shows that by connecting the cut on the sheet and the profile pipe, there is no uneven torn edge, so I recommend this method for those who didn’t already know.

I almost forgot - I used a large grinder with a 230 disc 2 mm thick. You also need to place a wooden block or corrugated pipe under the sheet being cut for the entire length, slightly to the side of the cut, so that the disc does not get pinched. You should not use narrow guides made of sheet metal - they may be crooked or warp a little from the pressure of the grinder disk, preferably at least 30 cm wide.

The gearbox of the grinder, when it is configured for self-carving, is located on the cutter’s side, there is less chance that work clothes will wrap around the disc. But this rule applies to those who have a right hand. For left-handers, the grinder is adjusted individually.

Important.

Once the disc bites, it is difficult to unscrew the fixing nut. To do this, cut out a washer the size of a nut from thick paper or thin rubber and insert it between the disk and the clamp. Even if the disk jams, the nut is unscrewed without gouging or heating.

To take a break from work, you need to turn off the power with the button, wait until the disk stops completely, put the grinder down and turn it off from the network.

Breaks in work are usually associated with overheating of the disk or grinder, replacement of attachments, or the need to move the parts being processed or the worker himself. In any case, you must first turn it off with the button, and then disconnect it from the network. It is important to monitor the tool and prevent it from overheating.

And if conditions allow, it is better to sand wooden surfaces outside.

Another disadvantage of angle grinders is the inability to properly regulate the rotation speed (this function is available in vibratory grinders, but is usually absent from angle grinders). Only angle grinders with the option of adjusting the number of revolutions are suitable for polishing; various polishing discs cannot be used on high-speed angle grinders.

In general, it is much more difficult to perform delicate work with an angle grinder at high speeds. Especially when processing a cross-section of wood fibers, you can easily overdo it and burn the wood (and at the same time ruin the circle of sandpaper).

Do not press the tool tightly against the wood, do not keep it in one place for a long time, so as not to cause scorching due to overheating. And try to hold the tool tightly when working. The rotating circle with sandpaper (or flap disk) must be kept strictly parallel to the plane being processed.

Misalignment can lead to damage to consumables and the surface being treated.

For large-scale activities, allow the instrument to rest and cool down. Especially if it is a household tool. Such models are not designed for continuous operation 24/7, usually for a maximum of 8-10 minutes of continuous operation.

Rules for cutting tiles and porcelain stoneware

We asked a specialist how to properly cut tiles and porcelain stoneware with a grinder. There are two options.

  1. Using an abrasive wheel for stone (usually these wheels are marked accordingly), and the abrasive is silicon carbide grains, which have a less aggressive shape than electrocorundum, which is used for cutting ferrous metals. The powder of this abrasive is mixed with a binder bakelite resin and a circle is formed from this mixture using one or several layers of fiberglass mesh, which plays a reinforcing role.
  2. Diamond wheels, where the cutting elements are grains of industrial diamond, and the binder is cobalt.

If everything is clear with the first option and there are no special options, unless someone wants to take a grinding wheel (unlikely, but there will be no danger) and cut with it, then diamond wheels can be smooth (the so-called crown), segmented (there is a cutouts, which accelerate the removal of cutting products from the cutting zone) and “turbo” circles, where there are notches on the sides of the abrasive layer, which also allow for more efficient removal of products from the cutting zone.

Any advantage must be paid for, and all cuts or notches cause increased vibration of the wheel in the cut, and vibration causes chipping. Therefore, for clean cutting of durable tiles or porcelain stoneware, you need to take diamond wheels with a continuous cutting edge - in this case, the number of chips will be minimal. Of course, it would be more economical to make a dozen cuts using an abrasive wheel on a stone. When cutting tiles, it is better to secure the angle grinder in a stand.

Holding it with your hand to prevent vibration is much more difficult. 

When cutting metal, do not try to put too much pressure on the tool; the grinder cuts metal quite effectively under the influence of its own weight.

To cut metal, you can use universal metal cutting wheels or specialized ones, for example, for cutting stainless steel or non-ferrous metals.

Of course, it makes sense to purchase such consumables only if there is any significant volume of production. Cleaning of welds and similar manipulations are carried out with special grinding discs.  

As part of the advice on cutting metal, it is also impossible not to mention how to properly cut thick pipes with a grinder.
