How to cut metal correctly and safely with a grinder?
An angle grinder is considered an extremely dangerous piece of equipment, so it is important to know in advance how to properly cut metal with an angle grinder in order to avoid injuries and do the task well. It is necessary to ensure compliance with safety measures when working and use personal protective equipment: use a respirator, wear protective gloves or mittens, goggles, etc.
Cutting equipment must be used strictly for its intended purpose; all work is carried out using special metal circles. It is strictly not recommended to remove the protective cover. How to work with an angle grinder correctly, watch the video:
How to properly cut a metal corner with a grinder
You cannot start cutting metal with a grinder without obtaining the appropriate knowledge and some skills. The most important danger is the possibility of the cutting wheel jamming in the cutting zone and its subsequent destruction. When carrying out work, the grinder must be held firmly with both hands. You need to carry out the cutting strictly from yourself. The depth of the cut is determined by the diameter of the disc.
Cutting a metal corner has some nuances:
- It is easier to cut a large corner (more than 60 mm) together with a partner. In a workshop, the workpiece is clamped in a bench vice or fixed with clamps on a fixed base. The corner is laid on the surface of the supporting structure (table, box, etc.) so that the cut edge hangs down, and its other part lies completely on the surface of the support. An assistant should press the workpiece and slightly pull it away from you to prevent the disc from biting. Cutting begins from the edge, moving towards the rib.
- Cutting corners with smaller dimensions (up to 60 mm) can be carried out without the help of outsiders. The material to be cut is laid out supported on both shelves (edge up). The detachable part must be suspended and not touch the ground or floor. The remaining part is pressed down with the left foot (in the absence of rigid fixation) in order to hold the grinder with both hands. Cutting should begin from the edge, gradually going down and going deeper into the areas of the corner.
If the correct metal cutting technology is followed, the separated fragment will fall down under its own weight, thereby increasing the width of the cutting zone. The likelihood of disk jamming is minimized.
How to cut a pipe with a grinder
To cut pipes with a grinder, it is recommended to use cutting wheels with a thickness of no more than 1 mm, otherwise the cut will be more difficult, and there will also be too many sparks and flying hot particles.
The technology for carrying out the work is as follows:
- The pipe is secured in a vice or secured in another way. In this case, the cut part should hang down. It is not allowed to place the workpiece between two supports and make a cut in the middle, as the cutting blade will jam (due to sagging pipe).
- Markings are applied using a strip of paper and masking tape. The ends of the tape should meet as accurately as possible. Home craftsmen recommend lowering the pipe into the liquid at the required angle, and then marking the cut line along the dry and wet boundary.
- The cut should be made from the top of the pipe, gradually lowering the angle grinder lower. The cutting disc should go along the very edge of the glued strip.
A large diameter pipe is cut a little differently, since the working part of the circle does not allow this to be done in one go. The wall is cut sector by sector, and the pipe is turned to the desired side.
How to cut aluminum with a grinder
To cut aluminum with a grinder, a different type of disc is used, since it is a soft metal and the cutting tool gets stuck in it. There are special cutting discs for aluminum and copper.
You should not try to make a cut in one pass, because cold hardening will form on the teeth of the cutting tool and it will become pinched in the material. The cut is performed carefully, without cutting through the metal all the way. You need to go through one place several times and avoid distortions.
The process is quite slow, and the quality of the cut will be low. When cutting thick workpieces, experts recommend dripping kerosene into the cutting area. It is better to work with aluminum with a hand router, which allows you to perform figured cutting and make holes.
Or you can do this:
Methods for cutting stainless steel
Stainless steel is an alloy steel that is quite difficult to process. This metal can be cut using 2 methods:
- thermal (metal melts under the influence of high temperatures);
- mechanical (cutting is carried out using a cutting tool by removing a layer of metal).
Thermal methods include:
- Oxygen cutting (gas arc cutting). The metal melts under the influence of an electric arc. Oxygen supplied to the cutting zone promotes the combustion of metal and the removal of slag from the working area.
- Electroerosive cutting. The cutting process involves destroying the surface of the workpiece under the influence of an electrical discharge.
- Waterjet cutting. The metal is separated by a thin jet of abrasive mixture supplied under ultra-high pressure.
- Laser cutting. The treatment is carried out with a thin laser beam.
- Plasma cutting. A plasma jet acts as a cutting tool.
Machining of stainless steel is carried out using the following tools:
- Metal scissors. They cope with sheets with a thickness of no more than 0.5-1 mm.
- A circular saw. Cutting is carried out using a cutting abrasive wheel. This method can be used to cut thick parts.
- Angle grinder. When cutting metal with a grinder, special thin stainless steel discs with a diameter of 125 mm are used. Non-specialized equipment can subsequently cause corrosion in the metal.
According to the cutting rules, the part must be securely fastened or rested against something, otherwise the workpiece may be pulled to the side and the cut will be damaged. It will be necessary to additionally process the cut edge if you cut without following the technology.
Cutting cast iron with a grinder
Cast iron is a rather fragile metal, but very durable, so it is recommended to use diamond-coated discs for cutting it. You can cut cast iron with simple metal discs, but they are much less durable. You can cut this material with a grinder only in a straight line.
Any attempt to make a figured cut can lead to jamming of the cutting wheel. As a result, under heavy loads, the abrasive element is destroyed and its parts flying out at high speed can seriously injure people nearby.
But it’s better to cut cast iron with a saw, as in the video:
You can use a grinder for cutting cast iron only when using a respirator (a lot of dust is generated), protective plastic glasses and gloves. Bakelite bonded cutting equipment is more suitable for this work. Ceramic bonded discs have a much smaller margin of safety.
A grinder for working with metal is the best solution. This versatile tool allows you to use it not only for cutting, but also for polishing, stripping, grinding metal and many other operations.

How to cut metal correctly with a grinder
About how to work correctly, accurately and safely on metal with an angle grinder
An angle grinder or grinder is a popular and frequently used power tool in construction and households. An angle grinder is convenient and sometimes irreplaceable, however, despite its apparent simplicity, working with the tool if not handled properly can be dangerous. How to reduce risks when working with an angle grinder? I'll tell you now.
Inventors shop at a budget Chinese online store.
How to work with an angle grinder correctly
Of course, any tool can cause injury and injury, but the grinder is the undoubted leader in this regard. This is facilitated by a hard and sharp disk rotating at high speed, only partially covered with a protective casing. In addition, the tool does not have a reliable support point during operation.
Basic mistakes
From my own experience, I will say that the main cause of injury is failure to comply with basic safety precautions. I am not a book reader and do not always and completely comply with safety requirements at a construction site, but this does not apply to working with an angle grinder; I always wear gloves and safety glasses. In addition, I never remove the protective cover. In addition, follow these simple rules:
1. Most of the troubles when working with an angle grinder are caused by a damaged or defective disc. Often there is a chip on the disk - a small notch, which during operation will destroy the disk, and it can fly into small fragments with great speed. In this case, the instrument will jerk sharply, which is also unpleasant.
DIY electronics in a Chinese store.
Destroyed disc on an angle grinder
The second disc defect is a fracture. Visually, it may not be noticeable, but when turned on, it will begin to chatter, the angle grinder will begin to vibrate noticeably. This is a clear sign of a broken disk, and work should be stopped immediately and the disk replaced. Factory defects are extremely rare, at least among large and reliable manufacturers. Therefore, you should not save on disks by buying cheap Chinese analogues or products from unknown manufacturers.
The precautions are simple - before work, carefully inspect the disk, then turn on the grinder and at idle speed “listen” to the tool to see if there are any new vibrations, “bumpiness” or anything unusual.
2. Using the disk for its intended purpose will save you from many troubles. You cannot cut boards or plywood with a metal or concrete disc; wood is much softer than metal, so friction causes smoke from glue or resin, which can be harmful to health.
You cannot cut wood with a grinder!
Moreover, the grinder is not intended for working with wood at all, even if you install a toothed disk from a circular saw - fortunately, the seat of the grinder is identical to the circular saw. But the fact is that the toothed disk clings more firmly to the tree, and it is very difficult to hold the tool in your hands, and even experienced operators do not risk cutting wood with a grinder.
Sharpening metal with a grinder with a special disc
Also, many builders often use an abrasive disc for sharpening metal, grinding welds, etc. This is not bad if you use special sharpening discs for this purpose. Otherwise, sharpening disrupts the balancing of the disc and thins it at the cutting edge (down to the fiberglass - the base of the disc). Later, when cutting metal, such a disk easily scatters in all directions.
Grinder with stone disc
It is very easy to avoid injuries in this case - when purchasing a disk, carefully read what it is intended for. The information is usually printed on the disk itself. And under no circumstances should you use a grinder to work with wood, it is not suitable for this!
3. The main traumatic situations when working with an angle grinder:
– Clamping the disk between the edges of the part being cut – pipe, profile, metal sheet, etc. When cutting, the cut converges under the weight of the part, resulting in clamping of the disk, which will entail the tool being torn out of the hands and the disk being destroyed. To prevent this, you should prevent the cut from converging; to do this, hold the shorter part, for example, pipes, in weight.
We cut by weight
– A sudden obstacle when cutting a sheet or reinforcement can also cause the blade to break. This happens, for example, when you cut a steel sheet, and a stone, a piece of concrete, or something else hard happens to be underneath it. Therefore, before cutting, do not be lazy and look to see if a foreign object gets in the way of the cut.
There may be a stone under the leaf!
– Cutting a suspended part or a part under load is incredibly difficult and dangerous. The place of the cut converges sharply when passing through approximately 70-85% of the surface, and if cutting also occurs in midair, the matter can end very badly. Experienced specialists make a cut of approximately 50-60%, after which they carefully and shallowly pass the tool along the perimeter, and when the first through cut comes together, they cut uncut areas along the perimeter, trying not to go deep.
4. Simple rules for preparing the tool before work, and correct completion. These are little things, but they are important:
– The disc is attached to the angle grinder shaft using a mounting nut, and when installing it is important not to tighten the nut with a wrench; it is enough to do this with your hands, stopping the shaft movement with a special button, and tightening the nut together with the disc by hand. If you tighten it with a wrench, then when changing the disk, it will be difficult to unscrew the nut.
– Remember a simple rule: first turn on the grinder, and only then touch the saw with the disc. It is important that when starting the tool, the disk does not come into contact with anything (of course, except for the angle grinder shaft on which it is attached). Failure to comply with this rule may cause the instrument to suddenly jerk out of your hands, which can result in injury.
– When completing work, wait until the disc stops, holding the grinder in your hands, or stop the disc on a tree - a board, timber, etc. I also strongly do not recommend leaving the grinder on at idle when moving to another cutting location or pause. Walking with the tool turned on is strictly prohibited!
That's all, work with an angle grinder, don't be afraid of it, but do it carefully, following safety rules.

Hello everyone. The grinder has become one of the most popular instruments these days. Few people who like to make something with their own hands do not have at least a small grinder for 115 discs. Today I want to tell you about a method for cutting sheet metal with a grinder, which I have been using myself for a long time. This method makes it quite easy and accurate to cut sheet metal.
This method is quite simple and reliable. Previously, I marked the line of the future cut with coated lace, but no matter how carefully I tried, the cut still did not turn out perfect - after all, we are people, not robots. Then I realized that in order for it to turn out well and evenly, I need to guide the cut along the guide. I started using profile pipes or a corner for this, it became easier and more convenient. But the best type of guide (in my opinion) is the same sheet metal, namely any smooth factory side.
This is how I cut sheet metal. Using a tape measure, I mark the required size and place the guide side of the sheet on these marks, clamping it with the bottom sheet with clamps. And this way it will be quite easy to cut - there is no need for unnecessary stress and constant monitoring of the grinder disk, it itself follows the desired trajectory.
Today we had to cut quite a lot - not only across the sheet, but also along it, using the same technology.
Then we clean off the sharp burrs with a small grinder with a 125 grinding disc.
The result is a fairly high-quality cut, which will never be possible if you do not use a guide for the grinder disk.
The photo shows that by connecting the cut on the sheet and the profile pipe, there is no uneven torn edge, so I recommend this method for those who didn’t already know.
I almost forgot - I used a large grinder with a 230 disc 2 mm thick. You also need to place a wooden block or corrugated pipe under the sheet being cut for the entire length, slightly to the side of the cut, so that the disc does not get pinched. You should not use narrow guides made of sheet metal - they may be crooked or warp a little from the pressure of the grinder disk, preferably at least 30 cm wide.

In this issue I would like to discuss with you one question, how to work correctly with an angle grinder and what is not recommended to do when working with this tool.
Many people argue about how the disk on an angle grinder should rotate, away from you or toward you?
Just the other day, I saw how a cutting disc shattered into small pieces and it wasn’t the quality of the disc at all, but a gross violation of the cutting rules.
The man was cutting sheet material approximately 1 mm thick, rotating the disk away from himself.
And the mistake was that you had to cut in this position towards yourself, that is, pull the grinder towards you, and not away from you.
As a result, the disk hit a sharp edge and was torn into small pieces.
The most important thing is that no one was hurt, very lucky. It would seem understandable, but not everyone knows about it. If the metal were much thicker, then perhaps this would not have happened.
A little about protection and safety when working with angle grinders.
I don’t know why, some people remove the protection from the instrument, I never do this .
I have it installed in this position:
Even if your hand accidentally slips, you will not be able to reach the abrasive wheel:
So, I work with the angle grinder only with sparks towards me, along the body of the angle grinder, it’s much more convenient and logical for me.

How to cut correctly with a grinder: towards yourself or away from you
A grinder is a universal tool, without which no construction can be completed. However, there is no single rule on how to cut correctly toward or away from yourself. Opinions were divided. Each method has pros and cons. One thing is certain, the main thing when working with a tool is safety.
Ushm or grinder what is it?
The grinder, known throughout the world as an angle grinder, was created by German designers in 1954. Electromechanical tool for grinding, cutting and stripping materials. The instrument came to the former Soviet Union from Bulgaria, where it was made at that time. Therefore, the angle grinder received such a nickname.
Bulgarians are:
- Large: length 400 - 500 mm, height 140 - 160 mm; power up to 3 kW. Used in production.
- Medium: length 300 - 350 mm, height 130 mm; power up to 1.5 kW. Used for professional work.
- Small: length: 250 - 270 mm, height 90 - 110 mm; maximum power 1.2 kW. For household work.
Using a grinder, stone, metal, and plastic are processed. It is not recommended to cut wood with a grinder for safety reasons. Specific circles are used for each material.
How to cut correctly
All workers who use an angle grinder are divided into two camps. Some cut away from themselves, others towards themselves. There is no single rule, only recommendations. This is proven by the fact that the instrument can be adjusted for both the right and left hands, and the rotation of the disk can be rehearsed in both directions.
Cut away from yourself
When the grinder is configured in such a way that the disk rotates clockwise, you need to cut the material in the direction away from you. If you cut on the contrary, the grinder will jam, this will damage the disc.
The main disadvantage of this way of working is that sparks and dust fly towards the carver. If cutting brick or concrete, wear a respirator, otherwise the airways will become clogged with dust. Clothes are carefully fastened to reduce dust getting under the overalls.
When cutting metal, a sheaf of sparks flies towards the worker. This may cause the clothing to catch fire. The cuffs on the sleeves and the tops of the trousers are tightened tightly to prevent sparks from getting on the skin.
The main argument used by supporters of self-cutting is safety. If the disc is bitten, the grinder is pulled out in the opposite direction from the cutter, which means the likelihood of injury is reduced.
Important. To change the direction of rotation of the disk, turn the protective casing 180 degrees. Twist the handle into the hole on the back of the gearbox. Everything is carefully tightened and checked.
Cutting on yourself
When the cutting disc on a grinder rotates counterclockwise, the correct direction of the cut is towards you. Otherwise, the grinder will jam and the disc will fly apart.
The disadvantage of this method is the risk of injury. If the disk is bitten, the driving force throws the tool towards the cutter. If you do not hold the grinder firmly, this can lead to serious injuries: deep cuts or severe bruises.
Therefore, this method of work requires full concentration; the hand is placed on the stomach and the movement of the disc is controlled. If the machine starts to work with voltage, this is a sign that you need to be careful.
The advantage of cutting towards yourself is that sparks and dust fly in the opposite direction from the cutter. This does not mean that you do not need to take precautions, but in the case of dust there are fewer problems.
The gearbox of the grinder, when it is configured for self-carving, is located on the cutter’s side, there is less chance that work clothes will wrap around the disc. But this rule applies to those who have a right hand. For left-handers, the grinder is adjusted individually.
Important.
Once the disc bites, it is difficult to unscrew the fixing nut. To do this, cut out a washer the size of a nut from thick paper or thin rubber and insert it between the disk and the clamp. Even if the disk jams, the nut is unscrewed without gouging or heating.
Required Security Measures
The main thing when working with an angle grinder is safety. No matter which way the sparks fly, serious injury will result if safety precautions are not followed.
Precautions when working with an angle grinder:
- safe place to work;
- individual protection means
- good tool.
Safe place to work
Before you start cutting, prepare the work area. Clear the site of debris so that nothing interferes with work. Remove flammable materials and combustible substances from the site. Check the area for power cables.
Choose a place with good natural light. If this is not possible, install lanterns or fluorescent lamps.
Work with an angle grinder only in dry weather; you cannot cut during rain or in rooms flooded with water.
During work, remove jewelry, chains, key rings, and objects that may get caught in the mechanism. So that they don't get wrapped around the disk.
At a construction site you need a class A, B or C fire extinguisher, it all depends on the place of work.
Individual protection means
Be sure to use protective equipment for the eyes, body, hands, feet and hearing. The equipment must be held tightly so as not to get caught in the rotating part of the angle grinder.
While cutting, sparks fly and can get into your eyes. For protection, wear goggles or a transparent plastic mask.
The sound of a working grinder irritates the eardrums. To protect your hearing, use earplugs or wear construction headphones.
Work with an angle grinder wearing work gloves to avoid cuts and abrasions. Select mittens according to size so that they do not dangle on your hands and do not accidentally get wrapped around the rotating disk. Also make sure that the mittens are not torn.
Working on time, the grinder raises a lot of dust. To protect the respiratory system from dust, wear a respirator.
Heavy boots with iron inserts will protect your feet when metal parts fall. Shoes are tightly laced to prevent sparks and scale from getting inside.
For work, wear protective clothing made of thick material that protects against sparks and abrasions. Work clothes should be tightly fastened, not dangling or hanging, so as not to get on the rotating part of the angle grinder.
Working tool
Before work, check the working condition of the tool. The cable and plug from the angle grinder must be undamaged, otherwise a short circuit or electric shock may occur during operation. This is dangerous because the hand can jerk in any direction.
The protection on the angle grinder must be tightly tightened. The casing is installed in such a position that sparks do not fly into the face or onto clothing. Therefore, first the direction of the sparks is determined and protection is installed.
The handle on the gearbox must be intact without cracks or chips, so as not to break during cutting. It is screwed in tightly so that there is no backlash.
To prevent the grinder from causing serious injuries, you need to take precautions. Everyone chooses for themselves how to cut for themselves or for themselves. The main thing is not to lose concentration while working. In this case, the tool will become a good assistant for solving construction problems.

Safety precautions when working with an angle grinder
The use of grinding and cutting power tools is a hazardous activity. Therefore, when working with an angle grinder, you need to take into account the possibility of direct or indirect effects of factors hazardous to health:
- cold or heat;
- poor lighting of the workplace;
- strong noise and vibration from the machine;
- great physical activity;
- rotating parts of equipment;
- falling objects (processed materials);
- flying sparks and solid particles of parts;
- work at heights, depths or in confined, hard-to-reach places;
- danger of electrical injury.
You can minimize the effect of hazardous factors, and as a result, save your life and your own health, by following safety rules when operating devices with open rotating parts. To do this, you need to use personal protective equipment (abbreviated as PPE), secure the workpieces well, choose a safe place, and start and finish the work correctly.
Securing workpieces
All small and medium-sized parts must be securely fastened in a vice or using clamps. When fastening, it is necessary to provide a safe place for possible falling of the cut parts.
Sometimes it becomes necessary to use a grinder to process large parts or structures that cannot be secured in a vice. It can be:
- sheets of metal;
- profiles;
- pipes;
- structures, machines, mechanisms.
In such cases, you need to make sure that the surface being treated is securely fixed (stands or lies stable), that after treatment it will not lose stability, and that the cut part will not fall on the worker or others. If there is the slightest doubt, you should support it with stops, jacks, or sling and securely fasten the slings to the surrounding metal or reinforced concrete structures.
Workplace safety
Regardless of where the workplace is located - in a garage, in a country house or a free area, it must be well lit and meet basic safety requirements.
Requirements for workplace equipment:
- A workbench, table, rack, cabinet or bedside table must be installed for storage, as well as placement of devices and tools for productive, safe work.
- All immovable equipment is securely placed (attached) to the floor.
- The surfaces of the workbench and rack must be no smaller than the parts being processed and the tools used.
- The surface of workbenches is made of sheet steel, aluminum, and other non-combustible materials.
- The vice must securely clamp the workpieces. On the surfaces of the jaws of the vice there should be a cross notch with a depth of 0.5 - 1 mm over every 2 - 3 mm.
- The vice is attached so that the workpieces are at the level of the worker’s elbow.
- On a closed vice, the gap between the jaws should not be more than 0.1 mm. The handle and jaws are free of dents and burrs.
- The moving part of the vice should not fall out when fully unscrewed and should move smoothly, without jerking.
- The floor around the workbench, as well as the entire work area, must be dry and level.
- Sockets for power tools are located above the level of the working surface of the workbench.
When working at a height (more than 1.5 m), you need to use scaffolding (scaffolding) with 1 m railings, sheathed underneath completely to a height of 150 mm or higher.
It is not recommended to use stands, barrels, or boxes that come to hand by chance. Do not overload scaffolding (scaffolding). In any case, when working with an angle grinder, you need to have a flat, solid surface under your feet.
Proper starting, stopping and breaks
Before turning on the device, you should carefully inspect and thoroughly check the disk. Do not use attachments with chips, delaminations, cracks or any other damage.
Before connecting it to the network, you need to install a cutting (grinding) wheel on the grinder with the pattern facing up, then tighten it with a special nut. The size, as well as permissible speeds, are indicated in the technical documentation for the tool.
A discrepancy between the characteristics leads, at a minimum, to faulty operation, premature wear of the disk, and in the worst case, to injuries.
When inspecting the tool, you need to check that:
- there are no damages or cracks on the body;
- serviceability of the cable (cord), protective tubes and plug;
- the handle is screwed well;
- the circle is fenced and the casing is securely fastened.
After this, the idle operation of the tool is checked. To do this, you need to connect the plug to the socket, turn on the power button and the latch. Watch the grinder at work for a minute. Make sure that it operates without extraneous sounds, excessive vibration, and that the disk does not touch the protective casing. When disconnected, the malfunction or functionality of the power button and latch will become clear. If everything is fine, you can start working.
To take a break from work, you need to turn off the power with the button, wait until the disk stops completely, put the grinder down and turn it off from the network.
Breaks in work are usually associated with overheating of the disk or grinder, replacement of attachments, or the need to move the parts being processed or the worker himself. In any case, you must first turn it off with the button, and then disconnect it from the network. It is important to monitor the tool and prevent it from overheating.
Recommendations for working with an angle grinder
The recommendations relate primarily to work safety. It is prohibited to use the device if a number of malfunctions occur:
- damage to the cable and plug;
- malfunction of the power button and latch;
- brushes sparkle;
- lubricant leaks from the gearbox;
- the appearance of smoke or odor characteristic of burning insulation;
- Excessively loud knocking, vibration or noise;
- cracks or breakage of the protective shield, body or handle;
- nozzle damage.
In any of these cases, you need to turn off the angle grinder, remove the plug from the socket, correct the defects, and after that you can continue to work.
You should not even try to cut soft, elastic and viscous materials with a grinder. For example, wood, rubber or clay. It is important to objectively assess the danger, and not hope that the injury will pass. Special tools are designed for cutting soft materials.
You can successfully cut hard materials with a grinder. A few simple tips for processing them:
- Thick-walled parts or workpieces are cut exclusively in a straight line. Curves are cut out in sectors.
- When working with long angles, profiles or pipes, you need to cut off the overhanging edge. A cut between the supports leads to deflection of the workpiece and jamming of the disk. You should try to position the workpieces so that they do not have to be moved during work.
- After cutting corrugated sheets (corrugated sheets), metal tiles or metal siding (metal siding), the edges must be treated with an anti-corrosion coating.
- Paving and tile slabs, paving stones, and concrete can be cut well only with special (diamond) stone cutting discs. The tile is first cut to a shallow depth with light pressure, and the next pass makes a full cut. In exceptional cases, it is allowed to cut these materials with a metal disc. But it is important to understand that it is only enough for a few tiles or a couple of meters of concrete wall.
- Care must be taken when cutting gas cylinders. They explode easily, so you need to make sure that gas and condensate are completely removed from the cylinder. In general, it is better not to carry out such work at home.
- High-speed ceramic discs are suitable for cutting glass or mirrors.
- Wave and flat slates can be cut using stone discs without excessive effort. Then you can avoid chipping and get an even cut.
When working with any materials, you must first make accurate markings, determine a plan of action, and only then start cutting.
The grinder is an indispensable assistant in the household and on large construction sites. With its help you can process any hard material, spending a minimum of time and effort. To gain initial experience and subsequent successful operation of the tool, you should follow simple safety tips. The main thing is to comply with safety requirements at all stages of work.

Angle grinders, or colloquially saws, are a popular construction tool that has become firmly established in our everyday life. However, this device requires proper handling and maintenance. After all, if you do not follow the operating rules and do not know how to operate an angle grinder correctly, it can turn out to be a very dangerous device. We talk about the features of using angle grinders, safety precautions and other important details.

Features of an angle grinder
Angle grinders (angle grinders) are used for a wide range of work on cutting metal, stone, concrete, be it construction or, conversely, dismantling structures. There are also a number of attachments for them that can be used for grinding and polishing.
Whatever type of activity you engage in, you must remember that the device is potentially hazardous. A cutting blade rotating at high speed can cause serious injury. Even small pieces of stone, sawdust and shavings flying from the cutting site can be dangerous, especially if they get into your eyes. Therefore, when using angle grinders, safety regulations must be strictly observed.
- It is strictly forbidden to use an angle grinder without a protective casing.
- The protective cover must be deployed so as to cover the person’s face from flying fragments and shavings.
- It is prohibited to use defective cutting wheels with dents and large irregularities along the edge.
- Visually check the condition of the cutting disc before turning on the device. It can be damaged (broken) or damaged during storage - sometimes all it takes is an unfortunate drop of the device.
- Before starting cutting or grinding, check the operation of the tool at idle speed to ensure there is no dangerous runout caused by defects in the disc.
- Never install saw blades from a circular saw or any other cutting tool not specifically designed for angle grinders on an angle grinder. The rotation speed of the grinder's spindle is several times higher than, say, that of a circular saw, and the part may simply fall apart.
- Take care of comfortable protective clothing. It is advisable to wear clothing made of durable material that can withstand a hail of sparks (for example, a canvas jacket and protective gloves).
- Be sure to wear safety glasses or a face mask.
Various attachments are used for grinding surfaces. Most often, a circle is used, on which a round sheet of sandpaper is attached with Velcro. A petal disk with sandpaper petals attached to it is also used.
It is more convenient, but the version with Velcro is reusable (if handled skillfully), which is much more profitable for large production volumes (a sheet of sandpaper costs an order of magnitude cheaper than a petal attachment).
Brush and grinding discs are used for grinding painted and rusty surfaces, and sharpening discs are used for sharpening the cutting edges of tools.
An angle grinder is great for rough processing of wooden surfaces. The round nozzle polishes the surface very quickly - several times faster than a conventional sander. This occurs due to the high spindle speed (10,000-12,000 rpm).
But high rotation speed also has disadvantages. This is, first of all, a large amount of noise and dust during operation of the device. Therefore, take care of a good dust extraction. When working indoors, it is highly advisable to connect a construction vacuum cleaner to the UGM.
And if conditions allow, it is better to sand wooden surfaces outside.
Another disadvantage of angle grinders is the inability to properly regulate the rotation speed (this function is available in vibratory grinders, but is usually absent from angle grinders). Only angle grinders with the option of adjusting the number of revolutions are suitable for polishing; various polishing discs cannot be used on high-speed angle grinders.
In general, it is much more difficult to perform delicate work with an angle grinder at high speeds. Especially when processing a cross-section of wood fibers, you can easily overdo it and burn the wood (and at the same time ruin the circle of sandpaper).
Do not press the tool tightly against the wood, do not keep it in one place for a long time, so as not to cause scorching due to overheating. And try to hold the tool tightly when working. The rotating circle with sandpaper (or flap disk) must be kept strictly parallel to the plane being processed.
Misalignment can lead to damage to consumables and the surface being treated.
For large-scale activities, allow the instrument to rest and cool down. Especially if it is a household tool. Such models are not designed for continuous operation 24/7, usually for a maximum of 8-10 minutes of continuous operation.
Rules for cutting tiles and porcelain stoneware
We asked a specialist how to properly cut tiles and porcelain stoneware with a grinder. There are two options.
- Using an abrasive wheel for stone (usually these wheels are marked accordingly), and the abrasive is silicon carbide grains, which have a less aggressive shape than electrocorundum, which is used for cutting ferrous metals. The powder of this abrasive is mixed with a binder bakelite resin and a circle is formed from this mixture using one or several layers of fiberglass mesh, which plays a reinforcing role.
- Diamond wheels, where the cutting elements are grains of industrial diamond, and the binder is cobalt.
Sergey Nemkov, director of the marketing and advertising department, Interskol company:
If everything is clear with the first option and there are no special options, unless someone wants to take a grinding wheel (unlikely, but there will be no danger) and cut with it, then diamond wheels can be smooth (the so-called crown), segmented (there is a cutouts, which accelerate the removal of cutting products from the cutting zone) and “turbo” circles, where there are notches on the sides of the abrasive layer, which also allow for more efficient removal of products from the cutting zone.
Any advantage must be paid for, and all cuts or notches cause increased vibration of the wheel in the cut, and vibration causes chipping. Therefore, for clean cutting of durable tiles or porcelain stoneware, you need to take diamond wheels with a continuous cutting edge - in this case, the number of chips will be minimal. Of course, it would be more economical to make a dozen cuts using an abrasive wheel on a stone. When cutting tiles, it is better to secure the angle grinder in a stand.
Holding it with your hand to prevent vibration is much more difficult.
When cutting metal, do not try to put too much pressure on the tool; the grinder cuts metal quite effectively under the influence of its own weight.
To cut metal, you can use universal metal cutting wheels or specialized ones, for example, for cutting stainless steel or non-ferrous metals.
Of course, it makes sense to purchase such consumables only if there is any significant volume of production. Cleaning of welds and similar manipulations are carried out with special grinding discs.
As part of the advice on cutting metal, it is also impossible not to mention how to properly cut thick pipes with a grinder. The thickness of the metal being processed should not exceed 25-30 mm for a tool with a disk with a diameter of 115 mm. A specialist tells us how to properly hold the grinder when cutting metal.
We also suggest watching a video on how to use an angle grinder correctly.

How to properly saw metal with a grinder
An angle grinder (angle grinder), or grinder, as it is commonly called, is an indispensable and universal tool in construction, designed for cutting and processing hard materials. But this is also one of the most dangerous types of equipment, so cutting metal with a grinder and other types of material requires compliance with all safety rules.
Choosing an angle grinder
For correct and precise work, it is necessary to purchase a tool that is suitable in terms of power and diameter of the cutting abrasive wheel and functionality. You need to decide what kind of work you need the tool for.
For home repairs, craftsmen can get by with a low-power grinder, but for professional construction they will need serious multifunctional equipment.
Types of angle grinder:
- professional;
- household;
- without handles;
- with one or more handles;
- different power: low, medium, high.
Low-power units are connected to a household outlet with a power of 220 V, powerful ones are connected to an industrial three-phase network with a power of 380 V. Low-power grinders often have a jammed disk when cutting thick metals, this is dangerous because the device can break out of your hands, injure you, or break the disk .
Advice for novice craftsmen to buy an angle grinder for a 125 mm disc with a power of 0.8–1 thousand W and a spindle speed of 10 thousand rpm. This power is quite enough to cut iron.
It is used for cutting metal, stone, glass, and also with the help of this device they do peeling, grinding and stripping. Having secured it permanently, it is easy to sharpen cutters, drill knives, etc.
When choosing an angle grinder, you need to pay attention to how it fits comfortably in your hand. The quality and safety of work also depends on this. If possible, choose a model with rubber handles.
Disk selection
For each type of robot, a specific disk is assumed, with the required diameter and thickness. The small diameter is 125 mm, and the large or frequently used diameter is 250 mm. The thickness of the cut and its depth depend specifically on the diameter of the disc.
To cut metal, you need to purchase a cutting disc with a thickness of about 1 to 1.2 mm, for professional ones up to 2.5 mm. If you plan to make figured carvings on thin metal, you will need a disk with a small diameter or a used one.
Regardless of the size of the disk, a protective covering is installed - a casing; it is used when cutting metal. When cutting metal, small particles are expected to scatter, to avoid damage from small metal scraps, a shield is installed.
Basic safety rules for working with metal
Before starting work, you need to familiarize yourself with how to use the grinder correctly, as well as with the safety features. Even if this is not the first time that the master has held a grinder in his hands. You should get to work collected, being as attentive as possible, without unnecessary emotions, in order to avoid injuries.
How to cut metal correctly? Basic rules for this process:
- A specialist should equip himself with safety glasses when working with angle grinders, and take shields to avoid sparks and small metal particles getting into his eyes.
- It is advisable to protect all parts of the body. You must wear protective gloves on your hands, not cotton ones, they are highly flammable.
- To cut metal with a grinder, you need to remove nearby objects, especially flammable ones.
- The workpiece must be secured in a machine or vice. You should not hold it with your hand or squeeze it with your feet.
- When installing a new disc, spin it at maximum speed, keeping the grinder away from you.
- If the disc turns out to be defective, it can break into small pieces and cause injury.
- The protective casing of the angle grinder must be adjusted and securely fixed. It is installed to protect your eyes from flying particles.
- The master must remember that when replacing disks or during rest, the device must be turned off from the network.
- Do not change the disc while the grinder is on.
- You only need to move around the work area with the grinder turned off.
- If the light accidentally turns off, you must turn off the angle grinder to avoid unexpected turning on.
You should not use cutters or saws instead of a disk; this is strictly prohibited. It is necessary to follow safety rules and minimize the possibility of injury.
Tips on how to cut metal correctly
When picking up an angle grinder, you must remember that this is one of the tools that is dangerous in terms of injuries. If the disk breaks, the angle grinder can break out of your hands and hit. When cutting, small parts may fly out; you need to take care of everything.
How to properly handle the unit? Additional security measures:
- After learning how to use the technique, you need to acquire cutting skills. First, you should practice on unnecessary details.
- The heel of the disc cuts metal better and more efficiently.
- When cutting metal, it is necessary to pour water on the material to cool it. This applies to any models.
- In the more expensive ones, everything is automated, rotations occur easily, without clamping the disk.
- Do not turn on the equipment at full power. This leads to rapid wear and tear, as well as rapid breakdown.
- Be careful about wear on the cutting disc. The direction of work requires attention and scrupulousness.
Recommendations from the experts
How to properly cut material? There are a number of auxiliary recommendations for using an angle grinder at home.
To avoid overheating, it is necessary to take breaks every five minutes so that the grinder can rest, for example, for 20 minutes. This especially applies to low-power models.
Aluminum is a soft and tough metal. When cutting a piece of large thickness, you need to drip kerosene. This substance is highly flammable, so all safety rules must be followed to avoid fire.
Used discs are used for cutting tin and figured carvings. After work, do not throw away used ones.
The corner is not cut in one go; each shelf is cut separately. To cut a long pipe, a certain cutting technique is required; you need to start cutting near the overhanging edge. If you start from the middle, the metal will bend and jam the disc.
Do not grind the material using the cutting sphere with its side. There is a special grinding disc for this. Do not press on the disc to avoid breaking it and to avoid injury. Lack of fast rotation means the disk needs to be replaced.
It is necessary to pay attention that the casing protects the wheel from splitting, so when sawing metal, if you think it is in the way, you should not remove it. It should be remembered that everything must be done extremely carefully, for yourself, as well as for those standing next to you.
Types of metals and features of their cutting
Cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and stainless steel are cut with special spheres for a specific type of material. Information about the disc can be easily found on its side.
Please note that stainless steel cannot be cut with a regular disc. The disc contains substances that destroy the protective film of this material. In the future, corrosion will form on the cut.
Cutting discs differ from each other not only in diameter and thickness, but also in the composition of the filler. Heavy-duty material is added to alloy steel cutting blades. A soft bond is added to prevent overheating of the cutting element when used in cutting aluminum and various types of non-ferrous metals.
Thin profiled sheets and tin are cut with steel discs with fine teeth. Thick respectively with thicker discs.
Special spheres are used for grinding. With the casing removed, but always wearing safety glasses. The work is performed smoothly over the entire surface.
Remember, working with an angle grinder or angle grinder requires special attention and skill.

Despite the fact that the real name of the “grinder” is an angle grinder (angle grinder), the main purpose of this popular tool is cutting materials.
Everyone can imagine how much effort it took to cut a metal corner or a water pipe using a hacksaw.
A cutting disc mounted on an angle grinder will cope with such work in a few seconds.
The grinder is a universal tool that allows you to perform the following main types of work:
- Cutting metal, stone and other hard materials;
- Sanding in all its forms, from sanding to mirror polishing;
- Stripping materials of paint, glue and corrosion.
For these works, various attachments (discs) are used.
Various attachments for grinders
The most popular are cutting discs. With their help, you can cut, shape or cut almost any material with a grinder.
There are types of work that cannot be performed without the use of an angle grinder. For example, cut a square hole for ventilation in a metal garage door.
Of course, in addition to the specifications for different types of surfaces being processed, the discs have mechanical parameters.
Description of the technical characteristics of the cutting wheel
The main indicator is the disk size. It determines the basic capabilities, especially the depth of cut. But a large diameter is not always a good thing.
Firstly, to use it you need a larger angle grinder. Moreover, a more powerful grinder is needed not only to ensure the landing diameter of the disk. To spin a cutter with a diameter of 230 mm, a motor power of 0.75 - 1 kW will not be enough.
Secondly, large sizes need space. Agree, it is much easier to cut off a rusted exhaust manifold stud under the bottom of your car using a compact grinder with a small disc diameter. Many home craftsmen do not throw away half-ground discs just for such “jewelry” work.
Another example of using a small diameter is cutting out reinforcement from a reinforced concrete wall when installing a switch or circuit breaker block for an electric meter. But cutting a corner of an “eighty” for the construction of a fence or a canopy in the yard can only be done using a disc of 150 mm or more.

RUSENUKR
There is an opinion that the very concept of “grinder” came into our everyday life because this instrument was first brought from Bulgaria. This is partly true. But they developed it and began producing it in Germany. It first came to us from Bulgaria, where it began to be produced in the seventies. Angle grinder is the correct name for the tool.
When working with an angle grinder, it is imperative to follow safety precautions, namely: wear goggles, gloves, a helmet and a protective apron.
Today it is impossible to imagine the work of builders, repairmen, mechanics, and mechanics without a grinder. With its help you can cut a variety of materials, including metal: fittings, rods, water pipes, corners, profiles.
The resulting sections can be ground, polished, and sharpened. A large selection of interchangeable attachments makes this tool indispensable and versatile.
At the same time, it is the most dangerous tool.
To cut metal with a grinder you will need:
- mask;
- glasses;
- disks;
- Bulgarian;
- metal.
How to choose the right grinder
- thermal (metal melts under the influence of high temperatures);

- safe place to work;
- individual protection means

- cold or heat;
- poor lighting of the workplace;
- strong noise and vibration from the machine;
- great physical activity;
- rotating parts of equipment;
- falling objects (processed materials);
- flying sparks and solid particles of parts;
- work at heights, depths or in confined, hard-to-reach places;
It can be:
- sheets of metal;
- profiles;
- pipes;
- there are no damages or cracks on the body;
- serviceability of the cable (cord), protective tubes and plug;
- the handle is screwed well;
- the circle is fenced and the casing is securely fastened.
- damage to the cable and plug;
- malfunction of the power button and latch;
- brushes sparkle;
- lubricant leaks from the gearbox;
- the appearance of smoke or odor characteristic of burning insulation;
- Excessively loud knocking, vibration or noise;
- cracks or breakage of the protective shield, body or handle;

- professional;
- household;
- without handles;
- with one or more handles;

What kind of disc to cut metal with a grinder - Basis
What kind of disc to cut metal with a grinder - Basis
Despite the fact that the real name of the “grinder” is an angle grinder (angle grinder), the main purpose of this popular tool is cutting materials.
Everyone can imagine how much effort it took to cut a metal corner or a water pipe using a hacksaw.
A cutting disc mounted on an angle grinder will cope with such work in a few seconds.
The grinder is a universal tool that allows you to perform the following main types of work:
- Cutting metal, stone and other hard materials;
- Sanding in all its forms, from sanding to mirror polishing;

How does a cutting disc work?
How does a cutting disc work?
The most common are abrasive discs. Many years ago, abrasives were brittle and often shattered into pieces, causing injury in the absence of a protective casing on the angle grinder. For safety of use, modern cutting abrasive discs have a complex design with multi-layer reinforcement.
Structural composition of the cutting disc
Between the layers of reinforcing mesh there is a bonded abrasive. This can be aluminum carbide, various corundums and other materials. The job of the hard particles is to scrape off a thin layer of the metal being processed, drawing a cut line, or polishing the surface. During operation, the disc wears down, decreasing in size. A disc with wear of no more than 35% can be used effectively.
Diamond discs have a different design. Diamond chips are applied to the outer radius of the metal circle using a high-strength binder material.
The diamond blade has a metal base
To prevent distortion when heated, expansion grooves are applied on the outer radius of the circle, which also play the role of original teeth that facilitate cutting.
Cutting discs have a specification according to the type of material
- For cutting stone, concrete, ceramics. Marked in green;
- For cutting and processing metals. Blue markings.
A separate type includes discs for cutting non-ferrous metals, especially aluminum. It is possible to cut winged metal with a regular abrasive, but the disc quickly becomes “washed out” due to the viscosity of the metal and the cut is of poor quality. To do this, they come up with all sorts of tricks - they smear the disc with wax or soap, and supply water to the work area.
In fact, it is better to buy a special aluminum cutting disc; it is not much more expensive than a regular one. Silicon carbide is used as an abrasive. The properties of this material make it possible to cut non-ferrous metals as easily as ferrous ones.
Advantages and disadvantages of various cutting wheels
Advantages and disadvantages of various cutting wheels
Abrasive wheels are affordable, always available in a wide variety, and are relatively versatile. The disadvantage is rapid wear, accompanied by the emission of a sheaf of sparks during operation. Not only is it dirty, but it can also start a fire.
Metal processing is accompanied by a characteristic odor that does not disappear for a long time.
All this limits the use of grinders indoors. Diamond wheels practically do not “spark” during operation; cutting metal is not accompanied by a strong odor. There are two disadvantages:
- Diamond wheels are afraid of overheating, so pauses should be taken during operation. When using a non-segmented circle, liquid cooling is mandatory;
- The high cost often directs the buyer in favor of cheap abrasive discs.
There are two types.
Petalaceae
Sanding flap disc
and abrasive
Abrasive type grinding disc. 5 mm thick
Despite the apparent difference, the effectiveness of their work is practically the same. But there are still differences. Use an abrasive wheel to remove hard imperfections.
Such as weld melting, large burrs when cutting or chopping metal. You can sharpen the tool.
With certain skills, you can grind smooth surfaces, but a lot of time is spent on this and the cost of an error is too high; if you move carelessly, you can make a cut.
Flap sanding discs are smoother and more forgiving of mistakes. But with their help it is difficult to remove hard protrusions. But you can polish the relief surface with high quality.
Grinding metal with a grinder is the second most popular application after metal cutting. No metal brush or sandpaper can compare in speed and quality of work with an angle grinder and the right grinding disc.
Popular: Safety glasses for working with an angle grinder, making the right choice
The complex and sequential use of several attachments can give results comparable to factory machining.
When grinding stainless steel or aluminum sheets, some home craftsmen manage to create patterns from the traces of the disk.

Of course, the instructions for your power tool tell you how to use a grinder for metal. However, let us recall the basic safety rules:
- The disk can only be replaced when the device is disconnected from the network;
- When cutting metal, a protective casing is required;
- Safety glasses and gloves must be worn;
- Do not grind with a cutting disc, do not cut with a grinding disc;
- There should be no flammable materials in the direction of the shower of sparks.
- How to cut metal correctly so as not to use up abrasives too quickly
- When cutting long workpieces, you need to cut at the edge; if you work between the support points, the disk will jam when the cut is compressed;
- You can start cutting only when the disk reaches maximum speed;
- The pressure on the instrument must be adjusted according to the sensation of the load on the disc. If the speed drops, loosen the force, and vice versa;
- You should not hit the cutting area with a rotating circle; you should enter the material smoothly;
- When working with difficult material, it is allowed to perform reciprocating movements at the point where the disk touches the metal;
- The corner is cut in two steps, each side in turn. The same rule applies to profile cutting;
- It is necessary to take breaks every 5-10 minutes of work.

- mask;
- glasses;
- disks;
- Bulgarian;
- metal.
How to choose the right grinder
How to choose the right grinder
The grinder should fit comfortably in your hand.
The correct choice and quality of the grinder itself determines the quality of work and the safety of the worker.
When choosing a machine, you should focus on its main parameters: power and diameter of the cutting abrasive wheel. Its weight is also important, since you often have to work “in weight,” and its dimensions so that you can do work in inconvenient and hard-to-reach places.
Most buyers, when they see a powerful grinder, are somewhat frightened by the fact that it is more difficult to cope with it than with a low-power one. This is a misconception. With low-power grinders, disks jam more often, i.e. They physically cannot “pull out” the disk under heavy loads.
The situation, how the disk and the machine itself will behave after reducing the load, is unpredictable. Most likely, the grinder will be torn from your hands. The consequence of this will be a fracture of the disk, damage to the machine and injury to the cutter.
Therefore, it is better for beginner craftsmen to purchase an angle grinder for a 125 mm disc with a power of 800-1000 W and a spindle speed of 10,000 rpm. This power is enough to cut iron.
For cutting metal, there are machines for 115 mm discs powered by batteries, but, as practice shows, given their high cost, they do not justify themselves in solving everyday problems.
The handles of the grinder should be rubber or made of a material that will dampen vibrations from the machine.
But no technical characteristics reflect convenience and safety in operation. The grinder should fit comfortably and securely in your hand so that when working with metal, you can focus your attention on it, and not on how to hold the tool in your hands. It is desirable that the handles be rubber or vibration-damping material with indentations for the fingers.
Low-power grinders, as a rule, do not have an additional handle.
If you find any inconvenience when choosing, you should look for an angle grinder of a different model.

When choosing disks, you need to know what they will be used for, pay attention to their diameter and thickness. These are the main parameters of the disks.
The smallest diameter is 125 mm, and the maximum publicly available is 250 mm. In professional grinders, the discs may have a larger diameter.
The thickness of the cut part and the maximum depth of the cut depend on the diameter of the disk.
If you plan to cut only metal, you need to purchase a cutting disc. It has the smallest thickness from 1 to 1.2 mm, for industrial angle grinders - up to 2.5 mm. This will ease the physical load on the grinder and the worker. The cut is neat.
If you plan to carve shapes on thin metal, then it is done with a disk of the smallest diameter or an old, almost used disk.
Many people believe that you need to use a diamond blade to cut metal. This is a completely wrong opinion. The diamond blade will simply get stuck in the metal and will be unsuitable for further work.
Experts say that even beginners do not encounter any particular difficulties when cutting metal with a grinder.
Basic rules for safe work when cutting metal with an angle grinder
Basic rules for safe work when cutting metal with an angle grinder
Layout of the most dangerous sectors when working with an angle grinder, taking into account rebound and destruction of the disc.
The most necessary condition when cutting is strict adherence to safe work rules.
Manufacturers of angle grinders are constantly trying to minimize the risk of injury and injury by inventing and improving various protection systems. But no one will take care of the employee like he himself.
The main dangers that arise when cutting metal are the flying out of fragments of a broken disk, a flow of sparks and tiny abrasive particles, and the inability to hold the tool in your hands.
If the disk breaks or gets jammed, the angle grinder can break out of your hands at the most inopportune moment and with great force, so even before starting work, you should foresee the direction of its possible movement.
Safety rules cannot be neglected even when performing minor work.
Before starting work you should:
- Protect your face, eyes, hands and, if possible, all parts of your body.
- Remove all flammable materials and objects that are in the direction of the sparks.
- If possible, secure the part being processed with a grinder in a vice. It is prohibited to hold the workpiece with your free hand or press it with your feet.
- If you are installing a new disk, you need to “scroll” it with a grinder at maximum speed, placing it further away: the disk may turn out to be defective and fly into pieces.
- Install, adjust and secure the protective cover.
It is best to protect your face with a special shield when working with an angle grinder.
During work you should:
- When replacing disks during rest, you must disconnect the angle grinder from the network.
- Use goggles or a face shield to protect your eyes and face—professionals use both during long periods of work.
- Hold the grinder firmly during all work.
- To replace the disk, you need to wait until it stops completely.
- Work in protective gloves. It is not advisable to use cotton mittens; they do not provide sufficient protection, they can catch fire, and the threads can wrap around the grinder spindle or disc.
- During work, you need to position yourself so that your face, and, if possible, all parts of your body, are not in the plane of rotation of the disc.
Upon completion of work you should:
- wait until the rotation of the disk has completely stopped and only after that put the tool on the floor with the disk facing up so as not to damage it;
- disconnect the grinder from the network;
- make sure there is no smoke or other signs of fire.
A typical mistake made when cutting metal: if the diameter of the new circle is larger than the size of the protective casing, it is removed. The casing is a protection in case the disk breaks and falls into pieces while cutting metal.

Instead of a disk, many people use cutters, saws or other available materials. Doing this is strictly prohibited.
How to properly cut metal with a grinder. Practical tips and advice
How to properly cut metal with a grinder. Practical tips and advice
If long pipes lie on supports, you need to cut off their overhanging edge. If you cut them in the middle, then due to its own weight the metal will bend and jam the disk.
If you do not have the skills to handle an angle grinder, then before starting work you should learn how to cut unnecessary parts.
The cutting wheel only takes radial forces. Attempting to change the cutting plane while the blade is inside the metal part will result in its failure.
The heel of the disc (the near lower part of the circle) cuts metal more efficiently.
In order for the grinder and discs to serve for a long time, every 5-7 minutes of work you need to take a break for 20-30 minutes. This rule is especially important for low-power angle grinders who are afraid of overheating.
To increase the service life of discs, especially expensive ones, and to cool the metal, the cut area should be watered with water. It is advisable to carry out the work together.
Aluminum is a very tough metal. When cutting a piece of large thickness, you need to drip kerosene into the seam, observing fire safety rules.
For molding, cutting tin, and figured carvings, you should use worn-out disks—“bits,” so you shouldn’t throw them away right away.
It is correct to cut the corner not in one step, but separately both shelves.
If pipes, angles, or fittings are long enough to rest on supports, cut the overhanging edge correctly. If you cut between the supports, the part will bend due to its own weight and jam the disk.
Parts of large thickness are cut only in a straight line. If you need to cut out a shaped part, first straight cuts are made, then the remaining unnecessary parts are removed.
You should not put pressure on the grinder. This will lead to jamming or breakage of the disc and overheating of the angle grinder. If the cutting process is slow, the blade should be replaced.
The resulting cut should not be processed with the side of the disk. A different type of disk is used for this.
Molten particles of metal and abrasive, falling on plastic products, glass and car headlights, stick to them, and then it is almost impossible to remove them. Therefore, they must be removed or protected before work begins.
