What is a channel in construction

What is a channel: types, markings and areas of use

The use of channels is aimed at maintaining stability and withstanding high loads for various structures. In appearance, this product resembles the letter P, it is made of metal, and as for the name, channel is literally translated from German as skirt.

Types of channels

The main difference between channels is in the method of their manufacture; accordingly, there are two categories of products. The first category includes hot-rolled channels produced by hot rolling; the second category includes cold-formed channels produced by cold rolling. Their distinctive feature is the presence of smoothed corners of the shelves.

Both types of products are used with equal frequency in construction work to build durable structures. Also, the use of channels makes it possible to reduce the metal consumption of construction projects by an order of magnitude.

Channels are actively used in construction using foam concrete - they are needed to create a frame into which these blocks are subsequently laid. Repair and strengthening work can also be noted.

Marking

To choose a channel that is suitable for a particular situation, you should understand the decoding of its markings, which indicate the characteristics of the product. The marking consists of numbers indicating the distance between the edges of the shelves (in centimeters) and symbols.

Parallel edges are designated by the symbol P, the same channel, but lightweight, is designated by the symbol L, the same model, but economical, is marked by the symbol E.

A product with inclined internal edges is designated U, special channels are marked C.

For small-sized structures, 5P is used; for floors between floors, 10P is more suitable.

Manufacturing Features

The main difference from a conventional beam is the presence of a U-shaped section. Such a cross-section can be obtained either by the hot method or by cold deformation. Steel channels are made using long products and rolled products from alloys 3ps/sp5 and 09g2s, respectively.

According to the location of the edges, the channels are divided into two groups. The first group includes products with parallel edges, and the second - with inclined edges.

Areas of use

Most often, the area of application of channels, regardless of marking, is construction, and we are talking specifically about large-sized rod structures and residential buildings. The second most popular area is repair work performed on both residential and industrial sites.

Channels can be a supporting element used to reinforce walls, floors, and to create a foundation for laying communication systems. Ramps for the movement of disabled people are also created using channels.

Based on the area of use, the type of material is selected. Not every alloy is able to withstand the load from a load-bearing wall, so for these purposes it makes sense to take steel beams. If you need to install a reinforcing belt on a massive structure, then you cannot use aluminum products for this, since they are not designed for this. An aluminum frame can be used inside a room, for example for an arch, a relief ceiling, for niches and ledges.

All of the listed types of products are selected according to their markings, which should be understood by anyone who wants to use channels in construction or repair. For corners or connecting parts, you should choose channels with a low value. A value of 10 or more should be relied upon when you need to select a product for wall reinforcement. Anything greater than 20 can be used to maintain the strength of buildings that will be subject to dynamic impacts of varying strength.

If the building is high-rise, or the channel will be intended for a bridge, then you need to look for a marking with a value of 40. Before selecting a product, it will be useful to familiarize yourself with the detailed marking table.

What are channels and where are they used?

Jun 29, 2014

In the modern world, metal products are used very actively in construction, and they have also taken a strong place in everyday life. The household sector is not developing as quickly as the construction sector, so metal is widely used in construction.

This applies to metal structures and their components. Metal products such as rod, pipe, channel and angle are often used. You can buy a channel from specialized companies.

It has a U-shaped cross-section and is made from a special blank by processing on a machine.

The channel is divided into bent and hot. Based on material, they are divided into steel and aluminum.

Of course, for each type of channel there is its own GOST, which the product must comply with. Hot-rolled steel channels have a slope of the internal edges of the shelves of no more than 10 percent. Sometimes the edges of the shelves are parallel.

Five series can be distinguished depending on the shape and size of the bent profile:

  • with parallel edges of shelves;
  • with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves;
  • light series with parallel edges of shelves;
  • economical with parallel edges of shelves;
  • special.

All such channels have their own number, corresponding to the dimensions of the product in centimeters. Dimensions refer to the distance between two outer edges.

Bent steel channels are created by processing on special machines. The source material used is high-quality carbon and low-alloy steel, as well as cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel of ordinary quality.

The main visual difference between a bent channel and a hot-rolled one is the presence of a rounded outer corner. Bent steel products are divided into equal and unequal flange. Bent steel channels have a number corresponding to their size in millimeters.

Cold-rolled channels are widely used not only in the construction fields, but also in mechanical engineering. There are many reasons why the channel has become in high demand.

The profiling method provides higher dimensional accuracy than in the case of hot rolling. When producing bent profiles using rolling machines, all kinds of workpiece defects are removed, and the channel does not require any subsequent processing. Using a bent channel reduces labor costs and makes work easier.

Hot rolled sections have uneven thickness and this has an adverse effect on their welding and other operations. Bent channels are easily welded even without chamfering. If the profiles are created in accordance with the technology, they will be stronger than the workpiece by about 10-15 percent. The weight and strength of the structure change for the better.

Where is the channel used?

The pace of social life is gaining momentum, which is especially important for megacities like Moscow. Territories are quickly being developed, skyscrapers and settlements are being built. However, acceleration is not the only prerogative of today. Increased requirements for quality of life are the main driver in the development of the construction sector.

Short-term production without compromising quality became possible due to rolled metal. Its assortment is varied. Among the most popular materials is channel. In terms of frequency of use, it is second only to fittings.

Each design has a mark: a letter indicates the location of the sides, a number conveys information about the type and size.

Channel – main types of metal products and areas of application in various industries

A channel is a type of metal product that has the shape of the letter “P” in cross section. This design allows increasing the ultimate bending strength, which is very valuable in construction work. Channels can have different sizes and even shapes. Let's look at their varieties in more detail.

What type of channel is there?

Conventionally, an element such as a channel can be divided into two components :

  • Wall. Horizontal jumper in the letter “P”;
  • Shelves. Vertical ends located perpendicular to the shelf.

Depending on how the shelves relate to each other in size, there are two types of channels:

  • Equal. In such products, both shelves have the same dimensions;
  • Mixed-shelf. Channels of this type have shelves of different sizes.

The use of one or another type of channel is determined solely by the requirements at the site. In addition, there are channels with shelves, the inner surface of which is located at an angle to the base.

All channel parameters are regulated by relevant regulatory documents - GOSTs. In accordance with them, their sizes are determined depending on the scope of application of the product.

For example, for channels that will be used in the automotive industry, GOST 19425-74 is established, and for the carriage building industry - GOST 5267.1-90. On this site you will find all types of channels.

Application areas of channels

Today, channels are actively used in many manufacturing and construction industries. They are of particular value due to the fact that among all metal products they are characterized by the greatest vertical strength. Channel can be found in the following areas:

  • Construction. For the formation of load-bearing structures and elements;
  • Car manufacturing. For assembling frames for carriages;
  • Design. Channels have even found application in interior design.

This is not a complete list of all areas of application of channels. They are used in almost every area where frame structures are used. For example, mechanical engineering, equipment production, shipbuilding, etc.

A fairly wide variety of such metal products makes it possible to select the most suitable elements for the implementation of certain tasks. In addition, many manufacturers offer custom-made channel manufacturing services. They can have individual sizes and characteristics. A channel is a multifunctional product that covers a wide range of tasks. You can find out the price for this type of rolled metal here.

What is a channel?

The channel is actively used in construction. Translated from German, channel is a skirt. In cross-section, the channel is shaped like the letter “P”. This structure allows for maximum strength.

Channels are used in many areas of construction. In particular, the scope of application is limited to achieving the following purposes:

  • increasing structural strength;
  • ensuring load-bearing qualities;
  • creation of ramps;
  • creation of boxes for communications, etc.

The AMg6 channel is most often used. This model is highly durable.

How is channel made?

This structure is made of steel alloys. After all, strength must be ensured throughout the entire length of the product. There are only two types of technology for making channels: hot forming (roller) and cold bending.

Products made using the two technologies mentioned above serve different purposes. However, each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Few people know, but channels are used not only in the construction of buildings, but also in the construction of roads. In addition, bridges and railway tracks cannot be built in principle without the use of channels.

Application of channels in industry

Strictly speaking, regardless of the purpose of the building, the channel will be used. There is simply no material that would provide at least similar load-bearing characteristics.

The difference is that channels for industrial use are made of special alloys. They are also marked “C” - special.

In addition, on the market you can find a channel model with the letter “U”. The edges of this product are inclined. The channel is actively produced in Russia, which means that a priori there can be no shortage of it.

Technically, the channel can also be purchased by a private buyer. Often, individuals use channels to organize complex roofing. In addition, such a part is used almost everywhere where high load-bearing capacities are required.

Since the channel is made of steel alloys, it is extremely important to provide protection against metal corrosion. For this, special alkyd mixtures are used.

Channel application in construction

· 09.09.2019

The construction industry today cannot do without such a product as a channel. These products are made from U-shaped steel. This type of section makes it stand out from many other metal structures. The finished product can have a thickness of 0.4 to 1.5 cm, with a wall height of 5 to 40 cm.

The production technology of these metal structures from non-ferrous metals consists in processing the material by extrusion and pressing. Steel channels are made by rolling a product blank on a section machine. The construction industry finds use for all varieties of this material.

Production of steel channels

In simple terms , a channel is a device necessary to impart high stability to building structures. It distributes the entire axial load over the surface of the structure. Thus, under bending loads, high strength and rigidity of metal structures is ensured.

But unlike a regular beam, channels have a special U-shaped section. The production technology comes down to the hot rolling method of steel combined with the cold deformation method. In addition to steel, non-ferrous metals are used to produce this item. And most often aluminum is used as a non-ferrous metal.

According to the requirements of GOST, channel steel (8240−97) is produced in the form of long products from steel 3ps/sp5, as well as rolled products from alloys 09g2s. According to their form, products are divided into two types:

  • Sloping. This product received its name due to the placement of the internal edges at a slope.
  • Parallel. This channel is produced with edges located parallel to each other.

A steel channel with a U-shaped cross-section, obtained by hot rolling, is one of the varieties of this product. The object looks like two shelves located parallel to each other and having one connecting wall.

Such products are produced in three varieties:

  • With measured length.
  • With an unmeasured multiple of length.
  • With measured multiple length.

Modern equipment allows us to produce channels of non-standard sizes, taking into account customer requirements. In this case, the slope of the internal faces should not exceed 10%. An object made of hot rolling steel does not lose its demand among light and heavy industries.

Types of hot rolled channel

Options for the production of this product today provide for the possibility of its use in the automotive and carriage building fields. Using bending machines, modern industry produces bent channels:

  • Made from low alloy steel.
  • Carbon steel.

This production method uses cold and hot rolling methods. In turn, such production involves the production of equal and unequal products. This method is considered special and is used only for making products that can withstand high bending loads.

The production of low-alloy steel products is necessary for construction areas where the use of materials with high resistance to dynamic loads and resistance to high temperature fluctuations is required.

There are five classifications of this product , which are marked with the corresponding letter:

  • Special series.
  • Products with a certain slope of the internal edges of the shelves (U).
  • Economical products with parallel shelf edges (E).
  • Lightweight products with parallel shelf edges (L).
  • Products with parallel shelf edges (P).

Areas of use

In the construction field, these products have found wide application. With their help, not only multi-storey residential buildings are built, but also industrial enterprises and small country houses. These products are also in demand in the construction of bridges and fences, fences, trusses and other metal structures.

The area of use of bent channel is reduced to the construction of frames during the repair or construction of houses. Among the advantages of this product are:

  • ease of use;
  • durability;
  • efficiency;
  • versatility.

The construction area involves the use of this product in conjunction with concrete structures. This metal profile allows you to assemble a structure without using a welded joint. For this purpose, the industry produces perforated products. Such products eliminate the use of welding equipment, especially when this is not possible.

The perforated channel finds its application in fixing electrical communications. It is particularly popular due to its ease of use and transportation. For its production, steel is used using a polymer coating or zinc coating produced by the powder method.

To give the pipeline high wear resistance, you can use the channel as a frame for less durable pipes. Aluminum products are used in lightweight structures, such as office partitions, shelving, and display cases.

Steel channel - classification, production method, scope of application, advantages

One of the most popular types of rolled metal products is steel channel, which has found application in various sectors of the national economy. Manufacturers offer a significant range of products of this type, the production of which is regulated by a number of current regulatory documents (GOST).

You can always check our website for current channel prices.

Purpose and scope of application

A steel channel is a hot-rolled or cold-formed profile with a cross-section in the shape of the letter “P”. It is used in industrial and civil construction (including monolithic) as one of the main structural elements of metal structures for various purposes. Depending on the modification, it can be used in machine tool and mechanical engineering, in the production of cars, carriages, and ships of various classes.

Product benefits

Compared to I-beams, a steel channel has less weight, which makes it possible to use it in structures that have more stringent requirements for total weight. Among its advantages are the following indicators:

  • Possibility of reducing the metal consumption of any structures and structures in which a channel is used.
  • Lower production cost (compared to I-beam).
  • Possibility of manufacturing using various technologies.
  • A significant assortment, including products from special series.

Of course, the cross-sectional shape used led to a decrease in load-bearing capacity, but the existing technical characteristics are quite sufficient for a wide range of applications.

Production Features

In practice, two main technologies for the production of steel channels are used, which make it possible to obtain products with different physical characteristics.

  • For use as elements with increased load-bearing capacity, hot-rolled steel channels are used, the production of which is carried out on rolling lines of various capacities.

In the production of this type of product, various grades of structural, carbon and low-alloy steel are used. At the same time, to obtain channels with different properties, boiling, semi-calm and calm steel can be used, differing in the number of treatments to remove oxygen from the metal. A channel made from the first type of material is characterized by greater ductility, and products made from mild steel have increased mechanical strength and resistance to loads.

  • A more affordable option is cold-formed channels made from cold- and hot-rolled coiled steel. They are highly resistant to bending loads and can be used in façade structures and in the construction of structures that do not require significant load-bearing capacity.

Most of the products produced are channels made of steel grades ST3 and 09g2s.

Existing classifications and corresponding GOSTs

Currently, there are a number of GOSTs in force that define the range and requirements for various types of channels.

  1. Hot-rolled steel channels corresponding to GOST 8240-97 (adopted to replace the outdated GOST 8240-89). The profile height varies from 50 to 400 mm, and the width of the shelves can be 32-115 mm. Manufacturers offer products from the U series (with sloped shelves, characterized by increased strength), P (parallel shelves), E (economical series, which has a reduced cross-section, reducing the need for metal in production), L (light series).

  2. Steel channels of a special series in accordance with GOST 19425-75, used in the automotive industry. The height of such products can reach 350 mm; production is also carried out using hot-rolled technology. Channels of this class are produced with normal and high precision surface treatment.

  3. Bent steel channels can be manufactured based on the requirements of two regulatory documents, GOST 8278-75 (equal flanges) and GOST 8281-80 (unequal flanges).

Delivery features

 Manufacturers supply channels, the length of which can reach 12 m; if it is necessary to order longer products, the conditions are negotiated individually.

It is possible to supply channels of measured, unmeasured, and multiple measured lengths. When planning delivery and calculating the required quantity of rolled products, we recommend using the table of the ratio of the weight and cross-section of the channel.

The word channel is of German origin and is translated as “skirt”. There is little in common between them. A channel is a U-shaped rolled metal product that is popular in construction work. In particular, it is used for reinforcing foundations, supports, floors and other critical areas subject to heavy physical loads.

What types of channels are there, with photo examples, areas of their application, manufacturing features, markings - further in the article.

Selection of channels for beams

There are two types of channels - general and specialized. They are produced with a height of 50-400 mm, and widths range from 32 to 115 mm. When purchasing a channel for installing beam floors, you should take into account their width. The length of the channel is calculated as follows - the size of the opening plus 140 cm, based on both sides.

The outer beams are made from channel grade 14A, the central ones from 16A. The letter “A” denotes rolling accuracy. It is preferable to purchase products marked with the letter “A”, which means very precise rolling.

Standard channels are produced in lengths from 2 to 12 meters; moldings longer than 12 meters are made to order and are designated by the letter “C” when marking.

Marking and manufacturing features of channels

Thanks to the existing markings, you can accurately select the product you need for your needs. The letter “P” means a hot-rolled profile, if there is also the letter “U” in the marking, the presence of a slope of the channel planes. Digital markings show the distance between shelves.

Using the tables in the technical documentation of the product, you can find out by the channel number both its mass in one linear meter of length and the number of meters in a ton of the product.

The specialized marking of the channel is represented by the letter “C”, and indicates that the product was produced with deviations from the standards, as a rule, to order. There are channels suitable for use without heavy loads; these are used, for example, for the production of armored belts for buildings. Such products are marked with the letter “L”, which means light.

There is also an economical version of the channel, in which the thickness of the shelves is made slightly less than the standard one. The economical channel is designated by the letter “E”.

According to GOSTs, two types of steel are used for the manufacture of channels - carbon and low-alloy. Depending on the material, there are standards for the height and width of the product, called assortment.

There are channels with the same and different flange sizes; they are regulated by GOSTs 8278-89 and 8278-80, respectively. To create profiles, special profile bending machines are used.

Areas of application of channels

Since the channel is very durable, it is widely used in construction and industry. In the production of cars and car bodies, a special-purpose channel made to order is used. During construction, it is used for the construction of load-bearing structures, frames, ramps, stands, where the use of conventional reinforcement will not be enough.

It is often used as a load-bearing part in spans and ceilings in building elements that have a large mass or are subject to large mechanical loads. Also, with the help of a channel, load-bearing walls are strengthened and door and window openings are reinforced with them.

In private construction, channel is widely used in the construction of cellars, basements, hangars and greenhouses. In those areas where a lightweight structure is needed, as well as for finishing work and connecting joints, aluminum channels are used.

They are also widely used for constructing frames for plasterboard walls and siding. The structure does not have the same safety margin as steel, but is very light in weight.

In private two- or three-story houses, channel bars are often used as risers for stairs, which are covered with valuable types of wood on top.

The guaranteed service life of a steel channel without loss of the parameters stated in the documentation for it is up to 20 years. And if the product is in concrete without air access and does not oxidize, then this period increases significantly.

Steel channel

A steel channel is one of the types of rolled metal products (shaped), resembling the letter “P” in cross section.

Thanks to this profile, it has good strength and endurance with respect to vertical and other axial loads, surpassing analogues and second only to I-beams.

The channel is also distinguished by good resistance to bending deformation, and its unique profile shape makes it possible to significantly increase the rigidity and strength of the structure under load-bearing loads and, in some cases, to abandon the use of welded joints.

Application of channel

All of the above advantages make the use of channels very popular in industrial, administrative, residential construction, mechanical engineering, bridge, ship and carriage building, pipeline construction (in particular, gas and water pipelines). These profiles are necessary for the construction of frame buildings, interfloor ceilings, strengthening of columns, construction of supports, and installation of partitions. Channels are used for reinforcing walls, strengthening purlins for roofing monolithic buildings, etc.

Type of channels

Channels can be bent or hot rolled. In addition, they differ in the size of the shelves (the sides bent relative to the main axis). According to this characteristic, channels can be equal-flange (shelves of the same length) and unequal-flange (shelves of different lengths).

In addition, the shelves can be parallel to each other (perpendicular to the main axis) or located at an angle (have a slope). Channels with flanges with parallel edges are more constructive, convenient and have better design characteristics.

The range of channels is also regulated by standards and GOSTs, where the geometric dimensions of the channel correspond to the height of its wall.

There is the following classification of channels:

  1. Hot rolled channels, they are regulated in accordance with GOST 8240-97 (DSTU 3436-96). They are divided by the width of the shelves (32-115 mm) and height (50-400 mm). This type of channels, in turn, is divided into:
  • channels having shelves with parallel edges (indicated by the letter “P”);
  • light series channels having flanges with parallel edges (symbol “L”);
  • the channels are economical, have parallel edges of the shelves (symbol – “E”);
  • channels in which the internal edges of the shelves have a slope (symbol - “U”);
  • special channels (conventionally designated as “C”), GOST 19425-74, 8240-97); There are high and normal accuracy (“A” and “B”, respectively).

Such channels are made four to thirteen meters long. Also, according to their length, they are divided into channels of unmeasured / measured length / including measured length with a remainder (up to five percent of the batch weight) / as well as lengths that are a multiple of the measured length, and a multiple of the measured length with a remainder of up to five percent of the batch weight. The remainder are profiles with a length of ≤ 3 m.

  1. The channel is bent equal flange, regulated by GOST 8278-83. This type of channel is made on roll forming equipment from low-alloy and high-quality carbon structural steel coils of cold and hot rollers. There are channels of ordinary, high and increased accuracy (in the conventional conventional designation - the letters “B”, “A” and “B”, respectively).

Channels of this type are produced in lengths from three to 11.8 meters (at the request of the consumer, a length of up to twelve meters is allowed). Based on their length, they are divided into the same categories as the previous type of channels (see paragraph 1).

  1. Unequal flange bent channel, regulated by GOST 8281-80. This type of metal products is made on roll forming equipment from rolled low-alloy, high-quality structural and carbon steel of ordinary quality. Just like the above types, these channels can differ in accuracy - be increased, high and normal rolling accuracy (symbol - “B”, “A” and “B”, respectively). The length of this type of channels is provided by the same standards as in the case of equal-flange bent products.

The most popular numbers/types of channels

The most common among consumers are channels with numbers 10, 14 and 20. The first (No. 10) is especially applicable in various areas of industrial production, construction and machine tool building.

It has increased mechanical strength and is used for the construction of large metal structures, load-bearing columns, supports, in bridge construction, etc. Channel No. 14 is the most common, it is indispensable for rigid reinforcement of walls.

Channel No. 20 (equal flange) is used for reinforcing various floors of multi-story buildings, building bridges, etc.

If you need to buy a hot-rolled or bent steel channel, be sure to read GOST standards and tables of correspondence to their standard sizes, for example, similar to the one below (table from the section).

Types of channels in construction and features of their purchase

Channels are one of the most popular types of durable steel products. The scope of its use is varied.

You can purchase this type of product on the Stalmet company website. The quality characteristics of the channel are at a high level, which explains its popularity.

Channels: their features and types

A channel is a product that has a U-like cross-section. The material for the manufacture of channels are steel blanks. In the section you can see that such products are single-walled, and two shelves are located at an angle of 90 degrees to the channel. The location of the edges of these shelves may be different. This type of product is characterized by high strength and excellent ability to withstand external loads.

Channels come in different types:

  1. Hot rolled. For their production, special installations are used, thanks to which the shelf edges of the finished products can be located parallel, or they can have a slope (but not too much). The cross section is standard, U-shaped. Such channels are characterized by excellent strength.
  2. Bent. During the production process, hot-rolled or cold-rolled sheets are bent. This is achieved through the use of special machines. The thickness of the walls is thinner, which makes the weight of the product less, and the structure itself is not too expensive.

In addition, channels are divided into types depending on their sizes. Below we look at the most common ones:

  1. Channels 8. Often these channels are used in the internal structures of various buildings as a material for strengthening.
  2. Channels 10. They are used in mechanical engineering and many industrial fields. Channel 10 is also necessary when designing load-bearing supports and building bridges.
  3. Channels 14. Very reliable and durable. Characterized by the presence of a high level of load-bearing capacity.

Where are channels needed?

Channels are needed in the following industries:

  1. Construction. They are used in the process of constructing partitions, as well as to reduce the load on the foundation.
  2. Automotive industry, as well as machine tool and carriage building.
  3. Arrangement of metal structures for various purposes.
  4. Architectural development process.

The use of channels helps to make the structure much stronger and enhance its ability to withstand loads of various kinds.

Channel is a standard profile of structural elements made of rolled ferrous metal and having a “U”-shaped section. Channels with a length of 4 to 12 m, their thickness varies from 4 to 15 mm. The term itself comes from the German word Schweller, which means “skirt”.

Products may differ from each other in type and size, manufacturing method, steel grade. All types of channels are subject to mandatory certification, and all their parameters are strictly regulated by GOST.

The width of the channel in centimeters is determined by its number. Both shelves of the channel are located on one side of its wall. This distinguishes it from an I-beam. Various materials are used to produce channels, but structural steel is most often used for their manufacture. To produce steel channels, they use the method of hot rolling or bending steel on section machines.

Load-bearing structures are built from steel channel, which is why it is necessary to remember its strength, since the safety of the structure’s operation depends on it. Thanks to its high load-bearing capacity, the channel can increase the reliability of the structure and its service life.

In addition, this element is used as a supporting structure in the construction of objects for various purposes. Stainless steel channels are resistant to corrosion and are more durable than hot-rolled channels. At the same time, their rigidity is comparable to hot-rolled ones, and their load-bearing capabilities also remain high.

Channels can be used as columns for industrial buildings, overpasses and racks of working platforms, roofs of various configurations, spacers between columns of industrial structures, in the design and construction of heavy rod structures, bridge spans, etc. Such parts are ready-made elements for various machines, mechanisms, tractors, etc.

Depending on the production method, channels can be divided into the following types:

  • special (used in mechanical engineering and carriage building);
  • bent equal or unequal flanges;
  • hot rolled.

There are channels with parallel edges of the shelves and with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves.

According to rolling accuracy, channels are divided into: high-precision designs (B) and normal-precision designs (C). According to the shape and size, hot-rolled steel channels GOST 8240-97 are divided into:

  • U - channel with internal edges of shelves with a certain slope;
  • P – channel with parallel flange edges;
  • L – light channels with parallel flange edges;
  • E – economical channels with parallel flange edges;
  • C – special series channels.

Channels are divided into designs:

  • measured length;
  • measured length with unmeasured length in an amount of no more than 5% of the batch mass;
  • multiple measured length;
  • multiple measured lengths with non-measured ones in an amount of no more than 5% of the mass of the batch;
  • unmeasured length;
  • limited length within unmeasured.

Cold-formed channel is often used in the reconstruction of buildings and during their construction.

In addition, experts recommend using channels in the form of a frame for cladding both external and internal walls, and installing partitions in industrial and civil buildings of varying degrees of fire resistance.

The channel is widely used in car and mechanical engineering, machine tool building, civil and industrial construction of buildings. With the help of channels, both individual parts of objects and entire frames of large-sized structures - bridges and factories - are erected. The product is universal, therefore it can be used to form the floors of multi-storey and roof purlins.

Channels increase the load-bearing load of the entire structure, as well as walls and columns, and are also used to reinforce walls. Galvanized perforated channel is used for planning interior spaces, laying electrical mains and communications - high voltage wires, as well as water pipes. Channels are also used to create ramps for lowering and lifting strollers and carts.

Channels are shipped in batches, the size of each of which does not exceed 70 tons and is accompanied by a quality certificate. Small and medium-sized channels are packaged in bundles for ease of transportation. Each package is supplied with a label indicating the name of the product, size, length, steel grade, etc. Large channels are usually supplied individually.
