Channel 16: weight, size, marking:
Channels are monolithic welded metal structures that are used in the construction of houses, foundations and load-bearing floors. They are produced in the shape of the letter P and can be hot or cold rolled. The characteristics of various series of channels must comply with Gosstandart GOST 8240-97.
This GOST clearly indicates the scope of application of various types of metal structures, shape, dimensions, thickness, type of welding, bending parameters, etc. As a rule, these parameters are considered reference, but they are always indicated when choosing a specific metal product when designing houses.
Channel 16
This rolled metal product consists of two shelves and a wall. These elements are located perpendicular to each other along the outer edge. The shape of the inner walls can be different, depending on the modification of the shelves, which has one of three options:
- Channel 16U is a product where the shelves are located with a slope of the internal edges.
- Product 16P - with shelves parallel to each other.
- The channel is reinforced, where the edges are parallel (16aP) or are inclined (16aU).
The channel section (16 sizes) has the following:
The size of the rounding of the internal corner of the inclined edges (radius R) is standard and equal to 8.5 mm. In addition, there is one more parameter - the radius of curvature of the shelf (r). For series with a slope it is 3.5 mm, for products with parallel shelves it is more - 5.0 mm.
Channel 16: dimensions
This channel is made by hot-rolling and has a width and height clearly specified in the standards. It is prohibited to change the dimensions of the product even during individual construction, because then the physical and operational parameters of the beam are violated. Main operational parameters: width, height and thickness.
Channel 16 has the following dimensions:
- Wall height or length (h). It is 16 cm. The load-bearing characteristics and the possibility of using the channel for reinforced concrete floors and in the construction of buildings with heavy operating loads depend on this parameter.
- Flange width along the outer edge (b). It can be 64 or 68 mm in size.
Channel marking
GOST clearly indicates methods for marking channels depending on thickness and type. The designations also change if the channel is rectangular or sloped. Accordingly, the rectangular channel 16 has the letter P (parallel arrangement of the walls), and with a slope - U (location under the slope). Next to the letter “U” the angle of inclination of the wall in relation to the center of the shelf is indicated. It can be anything, but should not go beyond the range of 4-10%
How to calculate the weight of a linear meter of a channel and how many beams are in a ton?
GOST 8240-97 clearly indicates the weight of a 16p channel, which must be observed during production. The permissible deviation of the actual weight of one product from the permissible one in the standards is up to 6%. But if a large batch of products is produced, then the final weight may have a deviation in any direction within 4.5%.
The standard weight of a 16p channel is 14.22 kg per 1 meter. There are 70.32 meters in a ton of channel. The standard weight of a channel with a slope is already 14.23 kg and there will be 70.30 meters of product in a ton.
Therefore, you can calculate the number of beams that are supplied by the manufacturer to the construction site using simple mathematical formulas. The standard length of grade P channel is 2-12 meters.
Any lengths can be produced upon individual order: shorter beams or longer than the maximum length. The weight of one channel can be found out as follows: multiply the weight of one meter of beam by its length.
You can find out the number of beams in one ton like this: divide the total number of meters in one ton by the length of one profile.
Channel class E and L
This is a lightweight and economical series of shaped metal products, which differ in wall thickness (it is slightly smaller than the standard one).
The letters mean: E - economical (wall thickness is 4.7 mm, each shelf is 8.4 mm thick) and L - light (wall is 3.4 mm, and each shelf is 5.3 mm).
Such a channel is often purchased during the construction of light buildings and for grillage foundations, where the load per unit area of the structure is insignificant. The technical and operational characteristics of channels of classes E and L are different, as is the mass of the finished product.
In production, hot-rolled carbon steel grade 3 is used. If channel 16 needs to be used in high humidity or exposure to aggressive environments is possible, then steel grade 16 (09G2S) is used in production. Channels of this type are used in the construction of bridges, dams, in heavy engineering, in premises where it is necessary to obtain high performance characteristics and provide a large load on load-bearing elements.
The cost of channels 16 of all brands and types depends, as a rule, on the length of the beam, the type of steel and the production method. But the price per unit of production cannot exceed the cost specified in the regulatory documents for channels.

Channel weight 16
Posted by admin on 02.08.2012
So, you are interested in the weight of channel 16. Okay, let's understand its weight. When asked the question how much channel 16 weighs, you need to clarify what exactly is meant.
Usually, the question: how much does channel 16 weigh mean something slightly different, namely: the weight of a meter of channel 16 (otherwise, the weight of a linear meter of a channel, the linear weight of a channel, the specific gravity of a channel, the theoretical weight or calculated, sometimes called the tabular weight of a channel or the weight of a channel according to GOST - it’s all the same thing).
Indeed, as for any other types of rolled metal, for all channel numbers there are standard tabular values for the specific gravity of one linear meter of channel. As for the weight of channel 16, the mass of one meter (theoretical weight) depends not on its shape, but on its height. That is, both the channel 16 with parallel edges of the shelves and the channel 16 with the slope of the internal edges of the shelves weigh the same, with the same height of the channel.
So, the width of the channel is 160 mm. If the height of the shelf is 64 mm, then the specific theoretical weight of channel 16 is = 14.2 kg. Once again, I draw your attention to the fact that this means how much one linear meter of channel 16 weighs according to GOST. The shape of the edges of the channel flanges does not matter; the weight of the channel is the same for both modifications.
So, the width of the channel is 160 mm. If the height of the shelf is 68 mm, then the specific theoretical weight of channel 16 is = 15.3 kg. Once again, I draw your attention to the fact that this means how much one linear meter of channel 16 weighs according to GOST. The shape of the edges of the channel flanges does not matter; the weight of the channel is the same for both modifications.
What is channel 16?
Channel 16 is an ordinary channel, a standard rolled metal product, which has a characteristic U-shaped rolled shape for a channel, but the dimensions of the width of the channel are indicated - they are equal to 160 mm.
That is, a more correct name for a channel of this size can be considered: channel 160 mm wide or channel number 16 (channels are often indicated by numbers, and the channel number is equal to its width in centimeters). However, channel width 16 is not the only feature that describes this type of channel.
It turns out that channels numbered 16 are different. And not at all green, blue, red, but differing in the height of the shelf and the slope of the internal edges. How to understand this?
Types of channel 16 mm
There are two types of 16 mm channel, they differ from each other in the slope of the inner edges of the channel. This can be seen more clearly in the drawing of channel 16.
Channel drawing 16
The first type of channel 16 is a modification called correctly: channel 16 with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves in accordance with GOST 8240-72. Channel 16 diagram in the photo.
Channel drawing 16
The second type of channel 16 is a modification called correctly: channel 16 with parallel flange edges in accordance with GOST 8240-72. Channel 16 diagram in the photo. ..
But that’s not all, as I already said, channel 16 can be made with different flange heights; in the drawing, the height of the channel flange is indicated by the letter c.
Drawing of channel 16 shelf 64
So channel 16, having a width of 160 mm, is produced either with a shelf height of 64 mm. The photo shows a drawing of channel 16, with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves.
Drawing of channel 16 regiment 68
Or with a shelf height of 68 mm. The photo shows a drawing of channel 16, with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves. ..
The story is similar for another type of channel with a flange width of 160 mm, a modification with parallel edges; it also comes in two manufacturing options: with a flange height of 64 and 68 mm.

Linear weight of channel 16
The channel belongs to shaped rolled products and has a cross-sectional shape resembling the letter P or half of an I-beam. It is made of metal, mostly steel and steel alloys, produced by hot rolling and profiling methods.
Channels are used in almost any branch of human activity where there are high loads on objects, be it a house, a highway or a locomotive. Construction of buildings, engineering structures, heavy industry - channels are used everywhere. Low price, excellent strength, ease of transportation – all this adds advantages to this type of rental.
Channel (U)
One of the most important characteristics of a channel is its mass . The weight of a linear meter of a channel depends on the shape of the beam and the material from which it is made, namely:
- wall thickness and height,
- thickness and height of shelves,
- profile length,
- metal density.
16 (U) | 14,2 |
Channel (C)
A special channel with the letter C after the number on the stamp makes it clear that this is a special series channel. Not all manufacturer dealers sell such rentals, since the most popular and in demand series are U and P.
The channel number indicates its width . For example, for channel 16 it is 160 mm between the outer edges. And the length of the channels ranges from 2 to 12 meters. Moreover, there are both non-standard and multiple sizes; they can be classified into one of three groups:
- measured length,
- multiple measured length,
- of unmeasured length.
16 (C) | 17,53 |
16 (Ca) | 19,74 |
Channel (E)
Channels are produced in two main ways - the hot rolling method on special machines and the bending method. The channel formed by bending does not have sharp corners, the joints of the wall and shelves are slightly sloping both outside and inside.
The profile of the hot roller is different, carried out in accordance with GOST 8240-97, it has specifically specified radii of rounding and the shape of the channel flanges. Such channels can be either with shelves tapering towards the outside or with straight ones.
BrandWeight of 1 meter, kg16 (E) | 14,01 |
Channel (P)
This series of channels are standard massive shelves and a wall; such a channel is used for heavy loads and high reliability requirements.
Due to the high strength properties that the U-shaped profile has, it is actively used in construction, reinforcing interfloor and roofing floors, additionally strengthening critical areas where the main load is supported by large I-beams, etc.
BrandWeight of 1 meter, kg16 (P) | 14,20 |
16 (aP) | 15,30 |
Channel (L)
If there is a need for a beam longer than 12 meters, then manufacturers, in principle, have the ability to produce such a profile. This may be in demand when reinforcing the foundation of a multi-story building or roofing structure.
But the complexity of transportation and the wait for custom-made channels are not always worth it, so if the designer or drafter insists on using channels longer than 12 meters, it makes sense to reconsider the project and make changes.
Just for structures that are not very loaded , such as roof slabs, but still require high frame strength, a 16L channel can be used . Its weight is less, it is cheaper and is used for areas without strong requirements for static and dynamic loads.

Linear weight of channel 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24u: weight calculation, GOST 8240-97
Modern science distinguishes between concepts such as weight and mass. This happens primarily because weight is a strength characteristic, i.e. a measure of impact on a support or suspension. Mass, on the contrary, is a measure of the inertia of a body. We are writing all this so that while reading this article you will not have any questions about what is the difference between the weight of a channel and its mass. For simplicity, we consider here only those situations where these two parameters are equivalent.
In the case of profiles, the mass depends on the following parameters:
- Forms;
- Metal;
- Sizes.
Shape and dimensions
Speaking about the shape, it is necessary to clarify that there are several types of profiles, for example, classic and perforated.
Metal structures can be made not only from steel, therefore, when talking about other alloys, this will be indicated separately. We are clarifying this point, since the weight of channel 12 made of aluminum will be several times lower than when steel is used.
Weight of channel models
In the usual case, the mass of a profile is calculated quite simply, but only if its shape is simple. Those. We are considering an equal-flanged product, the internal edges of the walls of which are located parallel to each other.
There are also unequal profiles, for which the calculation of mass is somewhat more complicated, but the most difficult option is the inclined edges of the internal walls.
This product turns out to be very massive, but this is compensated by increased strength due to the large volume of metal.
The weight of channel 10 can vary from 3 to 12.7 kg depending on its dimensions. In this case, such a large spread is ensured by different wall heights. It starts at 40 mm and can reach 160 mm, resulting in a very deep profile. The thickness also does not remain constant and varies from 2 to 6 mm.
If we consider all the numbers of the bent profile, then we can say that the channel with the h:b:s ratio of 25:26:2 mm has the minimum mass. The weight of this profile barely exceeds 1 kg. On the other side of the size line there is number 41, which can be presented in the form of a similar ratio of 410:65:6 mm and the weight of just one meter will already be 24.38 kg.
A higher channel number does not mean that the product will be heavier. The weight of channel 20 will be less than that of number 21 only if the dimensions of the walls and the thickness of the product are the same, otherwise even number 20 will be able to bypass the 21 profile.
The mass of hot-rolled profiles starts from 4.84 kg for the 5U product, the dimensions of which can be represented as 50:32:4.4 mm, and the length is 1 m. With a wall height of 40 mm and the presence of a slope of the internal edges, the weight is 48.3 kg per 1 m This is due to the fact that the metal consumption for such a channel is very large, and its dimensions are 400:115:8 mm.
Metal
Usually, when they talk about the tabular value of the mass or weight of profiles, examples of which we gave in the previous paragraph, they mean some abstract steel having a density of 7.85 units and a product length of 1 m. In reality, the situation is somewhat different, since the most different alloys.
One of the interesting options for various unloaded structures is aluminum. This is a fairly common silvery-white metal today, the density of which is 2.7 units. Obviously, the weight of channel 14 made of such material will be much lighter than steel; another thing is that creating such large structures from aluminum is not always advisable.
As a structural material, aluminum is very attractive not only because of its low weight, but also because it can be easily stamped and does not require any additional protection. Of course, during the technological process, the production of profiles from this metal is accompanied by various procedures that make it possible to slightly increase the strength of the product.
Steel channels
On the other hand, steel is used even more often than aluminum, and the most common options are carbon and low-alloy varieties. The quality of carbon steels is determined by the presence of impurities in them. The most dangerous are sulfur and phosphorus. Sulfur causes the metal to become red brittle, and phosphorus causes brittleness. For ordinary steel, these components cannot exceed 0.05%.
Within such a group, the mass of 1 m3 changes insignificantly, so the influence of impurities on the weight of the channel can be neglected. In this case, the metal marking “St” is used. A higher quality variety already has the designation “Steel”, and the S and P content is less than 0.035%. There are two more varieties of such alloys, high quality and special quality, in which the proportion of harmful impurities is less than 0.025% and 0.015%, respectively.
For high quality steel, the marking “A” is used at the end of the mark, and for higher quality, “W”.
The type of steel affects the weight of a meter of profile. For example, the weight of a channel 16 made of carbon steel will be different from the result obtained when using an alloy alloy.
Alloy steel is an alloy that, in addition to basic impurities, contains a number of elements that are introduced in certain quantities. These are alloying additives, the role of which is chosen from chromium, copper, bound nitrogen, nickel or vanadium. All alloy steels are divided into 3 categories:
- low alloy;
- medium alloyed;
- highly alloyed.
In the first case, we are talking about only 2.5% impurities, in the second they can be up to 10%, and highly alloyed compounds often have 50% impurities.
To summarize, we note that we have considered most of the factors that influence the weight of the channel. It should also be noted that when weighing a batch, it will be necessary to take into account small deviations caused by various errors, which is clearly stated in the relevant state standard.

Channel 16: dimensions and technical characteristics
Channel 16 is a type of steel product with a U-shaped cross section. Produced by hot rolling or bending.
Hot-rolled products can serve as blanks for cold deformation, the purpose of which is to improve dimensional accuracy and aesthetic characteristics of the surface.
In the production of profile products, carbon steels of ordinary quality and low-carbon steels are used. The manufacturing method and the materials used determine the technical parameters and areas of application of metal products.
Hot rolled channel 16: technical characteristics and applications
Metal products of this group are produced in accordance with GOST 8240-97. There are varieties: with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves (“U”) and parallel edges (“P”), in normal and reinforced versions. In the labeling, reinforced products have the index “a”. With a slope of internal edges in the range of 6-10%, a special series (“C”) is also produced, and with parallel internal edges – light (“L”) and economical (“E”).

By hot rolling at temperatures that exceed the steel recrystallization threshold, products with high strength characteristics are produced.
The visual difference between hot-rolled profile metal products is their clear outer corners; their bent counterparts have slightly rounded corners. Channel 16 made of carbon steel of ordinary quality is used in construction. In particular, it is in demand in regions with high seismic activity or during the construction of facilities whose operation is associated with vibration loads.
Main Applications:
- frame construction (as the main element of the frames of small structures or as an additional element in the construction of large-sized buildings);
- production of marching and spiral staircases;
- reinforcement of foundations;
- installation of a grillage for pile or pile-screw foundations;
- creation of supports for outdoor advertising objects.
If, when installing a structure, an important factor is the good alignment of the channel with other elements along the inner surface, then metal products with parallel inner edges of the shelves are used.
For operation under conditions of increased loads and in areas with cold climates, a hot-rolled channel made of low-alloy steels containing a high amount of manganese, for example 09G2S, is in demand.
Bent channel 16: technical parameters and application
Bent channel is made from hot and cold rolled strips on roll forming mills in two ways:
- continuous – cutting into the required sections is carried out automatically on the bending line;
- piecewise – pre-cut blanks are subjected to profiling.
Differences between bent products and hot-rolled ones:
- lower strength characteristics;
- a richer assortment, the presence of not only equal-shelf, but also unequal-shelf products;
- rounded outer corners;
- higher dimensional accuracy due to correction of small surface defects during the bending process.
The range of bent equal-flange profile is regulated by GOST 8278-83, unequal-flange - GOST 8281-80.

Due to higher dimensional accuracy, bent profile products can be welded without chamfering. A channel obtained by bending is usually not used to create critical load-bearing structures that experience high loads. Typically, these metal products are used for:
- arrangement of frames for facing materials in ventilated facades;
- construction of internal partitions;
- production of heavy equipment.
Bent channels are made not only from “black” carbon steels, but also from corrosion-resistant steels. Stainless steel products are in demand in areas that require resistance to corrosion damage upon contact with aggressive environments and an attractive appearance. Uneven-flanged metal products are usually made to order.

Weight of a linear meter of 16 channels: edge thickness, rolled material, curvature radius in accordance with GOST
GOST 8240–97 contains informative information, standards, tolerances and assortment of hot-rolled channels. Products are made from steel alloys and steels of ferrous and stainless metals in the shape of a U-shaped section. The weight of standard profiles depends on the material, geometric shape, thickness of walls and shelves. Channel No. 16 is considered the most popular in the national economy; the weight of 16 channels per linear meter depends on the conditional parameters.
Channels produced by the hot-rolled method are used in machine tool construction. Due to its strength, rolled products can withstand vibrations and loads of powerful machines. In the car industry, the use of channel 16 GOST 8240 97 allows one to withstand great forces during the acceleration of trains in coupling on rigging humps and when transporting heavy loads.
The mechanical engineering industry receives suitable material for the manufacture of car body frames and chassis. It is used in frame structures and as a base for engine installation. In heavy engineering, individual elements of metal structures are made from channel bars, for example, load-bearing beams of gantry and tower cranes.
When constructing buildings and architectural structures, it is impossible to do without channel 16. The weight of 1 meter fits optimally into structural designs and, with high strength, adds little weight to the finished building. Frames made of this material have a significant margin of safety and have been in use for decades.
Using channel 16:
- when constructing a reinforced frame of walls, partitions, columns;
- for the construction of bridges, crossings, railway crossings, special structures;
- when constructing foundations, reinforced floors, laying sidewalks and driveways with high traffic.
Specifications
According to the production method, channels are divided into hot-rolled steel products for standard purposes and special ones used in heavy industries. Rolled products are produced in sizes of 4-12 meters in length, the blanks are cut into dimensional, multiple-dimensional and non-dimensional. Manufacturing accuracy is indicated by the letters:
- A - high.
- B - increased.
- B - normal.
Material advantages
The main advantage of the profile is its U-shaped cross-section, which results in increased rigidity. Thanks to this, rental is popular in many industries, so the demand for it will never dry up.
Qualitative advantages of the material:
- copes well with various loads - bending, pressure, rupture, compression, withstands axial and lateral loads;
- is universal for use in structures for various purposes;
- relatively light material with high strength properties;
- has low metal consumption;
- under load, the center of gravity shifts to the area of the ends of the shelves;
- The homogeneity of the material obtained using the hot production method eliminates weak points, which is important under mechanical loads.
Disadvantages of hot rolled profiles
The disadvantages include the poor weldability of the material. There are some restrictions when laying hot-rolled channels in structures mounted by welding.
The second disadvantage is reduced corrosion resistance. Hot production does not use aluminum alloys, and finishing technology does not include aluminum coating.
Determining quantities
The properties of rolled products vary depending on the geometric parameters visible in the section. The weight of channel 16 per meter will be different if the basic parameters provided for by GOST change. Classification by these values allows one to judge the method of final processing of the product and the possibility of adjusting elements during installation.
For this purpose, the assortment takes into account conditional values:
- height of the product along the main wall;
- edge width;
- thickness of rolled products and edges;
- internal radius when rounding from a face to a vertical wall;
- face rounding radius;
- distance from the central axis to the surface of the outer wall;
- edge distortion;
- the amount of deflection along the height of the wall section;
- cross-sectional area size;
- moment of resistance and inertia;
- radius of inertia.
Channel categories
The dimensions of the finished products can be non-standard, this is determined by the wishes of the customer. Manufacturing involves the use of rolling mills, where billets are hot rolled and passed between rollers to give the desired shape. Hot rolled channels have greater strength compared to bent products.
Depending on the purpose, rolled products are delivered to the customer with equal flanges or different lengths, and have increased strength, rigidity and other useful qualities. The channel edges are made parallel or with a slight slope. The assortment lists several dozen standard sizes of rolled products, while the product number indicates the height of the main wall (the size between the outer edges, expressed in centimeters).
Depending on their suitability for the task, channels are divided into types:
- with parallel edges (P);
- with shelves made at a certain angle (U);
- with parallel edges, in the economical version (E);
- lightweight design, with parallel edges (L);
- special purpose profiles.
The channel (U) is distinguished by a specific slope of the opposite faces, which are located at a certain angle. In products, the angle between the surface of the shelf and the central wall of the channel should not be more than 10% of the right angle. The weight of a linear meter of channel 16 (U) is 14.2 kg.
Channel speaks about the relationship of products in this category to the group of specialized rental products. This is a rare series and is manufactured only in specially equipped factories. The weight of a meter of channel 16 is 17.53 kg, and with the letter (Ca) a linear meter weighs 19.74 kg.
Products marked (L) and (E) differ in the thickness of the edges and walls, which have smaller values compared to the others. The profile is thinner, light alloys and metals are used, this material is designed to work in light conditions. A linear meter of channel 16 (E) weighs 14.01 kg, the weight of a meter of rolled series (L) is 7.1 kg.
A profile with the letter (P) is a product with standard parallel edges and basic conventional values; it is used under significant loads. There is no rounding of the shelves in relation to the main wall, the angle is 90˚. The weight of a linear meter of channel 16P GOST is 14.2 kg, a product marked 16 (Pa) weighs 15.3 kg.
Measurements of the height and linear dimensions of the profile are made in the plane of the product wall using a caliper. To measure radii, special devices are used.
GOST in regulatory requirements indicates permissible deviations:
- the slope of the internal surfaces of the shelves does not exceed 10%;
- the height of the edge does not exceed the standard value by more than 3 mm;
- the length of the finished product is no more than that indicated in the marking characteristics by 100 mm;
- the level of curvature is within an indicator not exceeding 2% of the length;
- the weight of a linear meter of the finished product does not exceed the standardized value by 2.5-6% (depending on the type), this parameter can be reduced by the customer to 5%;
- the ends of the molding are cut off; a bevel during cutting can reduce the overall length, but do not take it beyond the tolerance limits;
- horizontal and vertical curvature does not exceed 0.2% of the total strip length, the customer can reduce the tolerance to 0.15%;
- Dimensional parameters are measured at a distance of 50 cm from the end of the profile.
Currently, channels are widely used in many manufacturing industries. They are especially indispensable where there is expected to be a large load on both individual parts and the structure as a whole. Construction, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, construction of highways and overpasses - this is a small list of areas of application for rolled metal channels. Durability, low cost, ease of use and transportation make it very popular.

Channel 16 parameters according to GOST
A channel (GOST 8240-97) is a special metal product that is very widely used in construction to give greater strength and reliability to erected frames and structures.
Channel
In the photo you can see the appearance of the 16mm channel.
The range of channels is huge and each profile is intended for a special use and purpose.
Advantages of channel 16
Channel 16 is in great demand in many industries, such as:
- Construction.
The channel increases the stability and reliability of various structures and frames. It is also used as supports, construction of metal columns, construction of railway bridges. - Mechanical engineering.
Channel 16 can withstand enormous lateral loads, making it suitable for use in this area. - Car manufacturing.
- Heavy industry.
Due to the fact that channel 16 has greater strength and stability, the need for this profile is gaining popularity in many areas of industry. Channel 16 can be used to assemble structures. Since the product has a small mass, it can be used to build roofs of various buildings.
Production of channel 16
Currently, many enterprises are engaged in the production of channels in accordance with GOST 8240-97. But it is better to personally check the quality of the product and the presence of a certificate of conformity. Because you can end up in a very unpleasant situation. For example, during the operation of a building, large defects may appear or even lead to a breakdown of the structure.
The material used is alloys with the addition of structural carbon and low-alloy steel. Alloys vary greatly in chemical composition and to make it easier to distinguish them, special markings were invented. So the first one is marked st2ps, and the second steel st3sp. They contain a large number of different metals in their chemical composition. In addition, ferrous metal can also be used.
Channel assortment 16
A variety of channel 16 produced in accordance with GOST 8240-97 are marked with certain designations, which can easily be used to determine the manufacturing method. For example:
- “P” channel 16 P is produced with parallel flange edges.
- The “U” edges are located at an angle to the base.
- “C” GOST does not have specific dimensions for such a channel. This was done on purpose, since such a profile is made to order with the parameters required by the customer.
- "E" is economical. Such a channel is produced according to GOST standards, but less metal is added during production.
- "L" light channel. Only light metals, for example, aluminum, are used for production.
Any channel is made in different ways. There are several manufacturing methods:
- Hot rolled production method.
- Method of cold rolled or bent channel.
A 16 mm channel can be produced in these two ways. You can study the entire process of each production method in more detail in GOST 8240-97.
Channel dimensions 16
Based on the above, we can conclude that all parameters and rules are provided in advance. This is necessary so that the future design meets the required reliability and strength. But it is worth remembering that you can always order a channel for yourself. The client will be able to independently determine the dimensions of the channel. Such a profile will be designated with a special marking “C”, that is, special.
Technical characteristics of 16mm channel
A channel is a metal product that has a cross section in the shape of the letter “P”. Due to this shape, the product can withstand heavy loads. As a result, it is in great demand among builders.

Channel grade 16. Technical characteristics, dimensions and cost
Steel channel 16 is a shaped rolled product obtained from a metal billet. Its cross-section is a letter “P” rotated 90 degrees. Depending on the number of the channel, its height is determined, in this case it is 16 cm. The element is made in two ways, which determine the name - hot-rolled and cold-formed.
Hot rolling allows you to obtain channels with the same width of the flanges, bending - with the same or different widths. In the latter case, a steel sheet of the required thickness is used, which is bent on profile bending mills. In this case, the corners are rounded, unlike hot-rolled.
The main advantages of steel channel 16 include:
- ease of installation;
- light weight;
- high load-bearing capacity;
- possibility of use in earthquake-prone areas;
- strength.
The disadvantages of the element are:
- instability to corrosion, which is due to the use of steel as the main material, as well as the absence of aluminum in the composition;
- the difficulty of creating a weld, so other types of connections are most often provided.
Return
Varieties
Several types of channels are produced using hot rolling (in accordance with GOST 8240-97):
- With a slope of the internal edges of the shelves of 6-10%. The designation of such an element contains the letter “U”. The scope of application may differ, special purpose is marked “C”, reinforced beams – “a”. In the latter case, the width and thickness of the shelf are greater compared to standard elements.
- Channel 16p has parallel shelves. Additionally, the indices “L” and “E” can be entered, which indicate low weight (light) and efficiency. They have reduced dimensions of walls and shelves, but their height is 16 cm.
Bent rolled products are characterized by rounded corners and equal-thick walls and flanges. Equal flange elements are manufactured according to GOST 8278-83, and unequal flange elements - according to GOST 8281-80. By bending you can create more types of channels than by hot rolling. Bent products are characterized by high surface quality and dimensional accuracy. This is due to the absence of temperature effects that cause shrinkage, as well as the manufacturability of the process.
Return
Application
Channel grade 16 is intended for use in the construction industry. It is used in the construction of buildings and structures in earthquake-prone areas, as well as under constant vibration exposure during operation.
Main areas of application include:
- supporting parts of billboards;
- grillage of pile and pile-screw foundation;
- reinforcement of the underground part of the structure;
- marching and spiral staircases;
- frame buildings.
The product is used as a load-bearing, self-supporting and non-load-bearing element in the frame of buildings of various sizes.
If it is necessary to create the most reliable junction of several beams, the use of 16P is provided. Hot rolling provides strength and reliability under high loads and cold climates. The main material for the production of such a channel is steel with a low content of alloying components (09G2S).
Return
Price
The price of the product is determined based on the series (U, P, a, E, L), type of source material for production, length, weight, delivery method. The final amount depends on the number of beams per ton and the remainder (beam of shorter length). The most expensive type of rental is series “a”, because... it is durable and versatile.
When ordering a large volume of material, you can purchase it at a better price. On average, the cost of channel 16 is per ton:
- 16P 9 m long – 27.68 thousand rubles;
- 16P 12 m long – 25.55 thousand rubles;
- 16U 9 m long – 24.4 thousand rubles;
- 16U 12 m long – 23.4 thousand rubles.
One meter of hot-rolled channel costs about 615 rubles. when ordering a beam 12 m long.
Return
Assortment
Depending on the method of production of the product, the length of the product is determined. Hot-rolled elements are produced with a length of 2-12 m, cold-formed elements - 3-12 m (obtained by continuous or piece bending). Continuous bending involves the use of a solid workpiece, and piece bending involves the use of individual elements with the required length.
The actual weight of products may differ slightly from the standard weight. The steel used for production has a density of 7850 kg/m3.
Return
What kind of steel is used in production?
Steel channel 16 is made of carbon structural steel ST3. It contains a large amount of iron - 99.41%. The use of 09G2S steel is considered effective for working in a humid environment, strengthening load-bearing structures, creating supports, in the machine-building and carriage-building fields.
We also recommend:
- A500S fittings;
- I-beam 20B1;

Channel 16 – weight 1 meter and dimensions
Channel No. 16 is a type of shaped steel and is a metal product with a cross section in the shape of the letter “P”. The wall height is 16 cm. This metal product is manufactured in two ways: hot deformation and cold bending from strip blanks on roll forming mills.
Hot-rolled products are produced only with equal flange widths; bent products can be either equal or unequal flanges. The visual difference between a hot-rolled profile and a bent one is its clear outer corners.
Types of channel number 16 and their characteristics
Hot-rolled products are produced in accordance with GOST 8240-97 in several versions:
- with a slope of the inner edges of the shelves. Such rolled steel is designated by the letter “U”. Products with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves of 6-10%, having a special purpose, are designated by the letter “C”. The reinforced version of this rolled metal product is designated by the letter “a”. It is characterized by a large width and thickness of the shelf.
- with parallel edges of the shelves. It is designated by the letter “P”; the reinforced version with a larger width and thickness of shelves is marked with the letter “a”. In addition to the “P” series, the following series are produced with parallel edges of shelves: light (“L”) and economical (“E”). The light series is characterized by reduced width and thickness of the shelf, and wall thickness. For economical - smaller wall thickness.
Bent metal products have rounded outer corners and the same thickness of shelves and walls. Equal flange products are manufactured in accordance with GOST 8278-83, unequal flange products - with GOST 8281-80.
The range of rolled products is much wider than the standard list of sizes for hot-rolled analogues, which allows you to select products that are most suitable for the planned application.
Metal products produced by bending have precise dimensions and good surface quality, due to the fact that during the U-shape formation on roll forming mills, minor defects in the strip workpiece are eliminated.
Dimensions and weights of various types of channel grade 16
The standard length of hot-rolled metal supplied to the consumer is 2-12 m, bent - 3-12 m. Bent profile products can be manufactured by continuous or piece bending. In the first case, the strip is bent and then cut into the required lengths. In the second, the strip billet is cut into dimensional pieces, and then bending is carried out.
The weight of channel No. 16 presented in the regulatory documentation is an approximate value, which may differ slightly from the actual one. Regardless of the grade of steel from which the metal product is made, the average steel density of 7850 kg/m3 is used in the calculations for the tables.

Channel 16 and its characteristics
Channel hardware 16 is a long, flattened product with a profile in the form of a squat letter “P”. It is given this shape because it contributes to the stability of the structure under large vertical loads.
There are two main types of channels - with a straight or beveled surface of the inner part of the shelves (they are designated P and U, respectively).
In terms of size it is characterized as follows:
- Width (distance between shelves)
- Length
- Wall thickness
All quantities are usually measured in millimeters, with the exception of length. There is no strictly defined area of application of the channel. Due to its beneficial qualities, it is used in construction, the construction of various metal structures, in the engineering and metalworking industries. It is also indispensable for the construction of bridges, transport and crane tracks and other internal communications of industrial buildings.
Supplied to the consumer in the form of measured and unmeasured segments. Channel 16 is produced using hot rolling technology, in contrast to cold forming; a metal strip heated to softening is fed into the rolling mechanism for shaping and crimping. Marked with index 16 to distinguish it from other types of similar hardware, for example, bent channels.
How does channel 16 differ from other similar products?
This channel is produced in accordance with the requirements of GOST 8240-97 (previously 89) using hot rolling technology. Unlike other types of channels, which have sloped flanges (side walls of the profile), the sides of product 16 are connected at right angles.
The internal corner of the product is somewhat rounded and this rounding is called radius (R). According to GOST requirements, it is 8.5 mm. In addition, the radius of curvature of the shelves is accepted; depending on the type of metal product, it ranges from 3.5 to 5 mm.
All channels 16 belong to equal flange products. There are also non-equal-flange profiles of this type. Unlike the one listed here, they have different shelf widths.
Detailed characteristics of channel 16
In addition to the shape, there are other differences between these hardware and other types of shaped steel; you can find them out from the characteristics of channel 16.
GOST 8240 describes in detail all the parameters of a product marked 16: steel grade, strength, hardness, hardening, width and thickness of shelves, surface smoothness, and weight per linear meter of finished products.
Depending on the purpose of the material, other state standards besides the one mentioned are also applied. They regulate the properties and parameters of metal products for their use for specific purposes.
For example:
- GOST 19281-89 (old). Channel 16 made of especially strong steel
- GOST 535-2005 (new). Hardware for general and special purposes
- GOST R 52927-2015. Products made from high-strength steel grades for the construction of metal structures and shipbuilding.
Channel 16 - marking
Channel 16 used in construction is designated as follows:
- "16P" - parallel shelves
- “16U” - with slanting shelves
- “16аП” and “16аУ” - reinforced
In addition, it is customary to clearly indicate the dimensional parameters of the channel according to GOST 8240-89 (97):
- Height 160 mm
- Shelf width 6.4 cm, thickness 8.4
- R 8.5
- r 3.5
- Weight per linear meter for channel products 16 - 16 - 14.2 kg
Standard (measured) length is 4 m to 12 m. The channel can also be supplied in lengths specified by the customer.
Another important indicator by which channel 16 is distinguished is modification. For hardware marked “U” (height 64 mm), the cross-sectional area will be 18.1 square centimeters. And for the same product with a height of 68 mm, this figure will be 19.5 square centimeters. But for a product marked “P” with the same dimensional characteristics, it will remain at 18.1 sq.cm.
Differences in geometry
Channel 16 can have different configurations, for example, with shelves bent inward. The profiles described here have the following labels:
- Channel with simple shelves of the first type - “U”
- With shelves of the second type - “P”
- Economical - "E"
- Light type - “L”
- Special - "C"
These are the main types, besides them there are various subtypes that do not differ in basic parameters, but may have greater or lesser wall thickness, different radii of curvature, different widths of the product and its shelves. Such channels have an additional designation in the index - a - the first size and b - the second, with a larger profile weight.
According to the standards, channel 16 has additional dimensions for types U, P, S. There are a total of eight types of this metal profile.
Weight per linear meter of channel product 16
In order to evaluate the quality of channels, as well as correctly make technical calculations of structures, there is an important indicator - the reference weight of a meter of product.
If all technological requirements are met, then on average, the mass of a linear meter must correspond to that specified in the state standard. GOST 8240 allows a deviation of no more than 5% from the standard. For each type there is its own value of this value, which is given in the table of the corresponding technical documentation. For example, for a channel of series “P” No. 5 this figure is 4.84 kilograms per meter.

Channel 16 GOST 8240-97
A channel is a product of modern rolled metal with a profile shape similar to the letter P. It is manufactured in two ways: cold and hot rolling. It is used in a wide variety of areas: in industry and machine tool building, mechanical engineering and construction.
Hot rolled channel of this series is produced on a special machine at high temperature. This treatment gives it high performance characteristics.
This product consists of a wall and 2 shelves. These elements are located perpendicular to each other along the outer edge. Modification of shelves is carried out in the following options:
- channel 16P, in which the edges of the shelves are parallel to each other, without slope;
- 16U, having an internal slope of the edges; The slope angle may be different, but not beyond 4% -10%.
- reinforced channel, whose edges are either parallel (16aP) or located at an angle (16aU).
Radius R (rounding the inner corner of inclined edges) has a standard size of 8.5 mm. The flange rounding (r) is 3.5 mm for channel series with a slope. For products with parallel shelves this figure is 5.0 mm.
Product height and width
Channel 16 has a standard height and width.
- The height h, indicating the distance between the shelves, is 16 cm.
- The width of the shelf along the outer edge, designated b, can be 64 mm or 68 mm.
In accordance with GOST, channel 16 has a certain weight. This value from the actual value during production can deviate by no more than 6% per product and 4.5% per batch. The actual weight is determined by weighing an individual unit or the entire lot upon delivery to the customer.
Brand 16P:
- Channel 16 weight 1 m has 14.22 kg;
- One ton of product contains 70.32 m.
Brand 16U:
- Channel 16 weight 1 m has 14.23 kg;
- One ton of product contains 70.30 m.
1 meter of channel E series (economical) - 14.01 kg, L (light) - 7.10 kg.
Class E and L
The economical (E) and light (L) channel series are distinguished by their wall thickness, which is less than the standard value. Brand 16P has the following parameters:
- economical - wall - 4.7 mm, each shelf - 8.4 mm;
- lungs - wall - 3.4 mm, each shelf - 5.3 mm.
The total weight and mass of 1 m beam, quantity, retail and wholesale price depend on this characteristic. The characteristics also change accordingly: strength, load resistance, rigidity. The durability of beams, their scope of application, reliability and quality of construction depend on these indicators.
- Channel 16 has very high strength.
- It is resistant to heavy loads, which allows the construction of buildings and structures in seismic zones.
- Relatively light weight of products.
- Ease of installation.
This rolled metal product is used to increase the stability and reliability of various structures. Due to their high strength and rigidity, the products are able to withstand large lateral loads. It is these qualities that determine the use of this material in almost all types of construction, the construction of bridges, roof purlins, metal columns, and supports.
It can be used as floor beams, and is often used for the construction of metal trusses, where channel 16 significantly reduces the weight of the metal and removes the stress of the main load-bearing elements. Due to its characteristics and successful configuration, the material can serve as a support for outdoor advertising, an element of overpasses or bridges. It is also used in the construction of multi-storey modern houses.
Channel 16: price
The cost of the material depends on parameters such as:
- product type;
- the steel used in its production;
- channel length;
- product weight;
- conditions and method of delivery.
The cost of a wholesale batch depends on the number of products contained in one ton, and what is the remainder (a beam with a smaller size is available in almost every batch).
The most expensive is the reinforced channel, which has maximum strength and versatility in operation. An important factor influencing the cost is the order volume. Large quantities are sold at a significantly reduced price.
Average cost of products:
- channel 16 with parallel flanges 9 meters - from 29,800 rubles/t; 12 meters - from 26,680 rub./t;
- products with a slope of the internal walls of the shelves of 12 meters - from 23,400 rub./t, 9 meters - from 24,400 rub./t.
- 1 m/p hot-rolled channel with a length of 12 m - from 615 rubles.
We looked at what a channel is, where it is used, and how much it costs. We hope you found the information useful.

How much does 1 meter of channel weigh | Standard sizes
Modern construction cannot do without innovative solutions, thanks to which it is possible to significantly strengthen structures and buildings. Hot rolled metal is just that. The U-shaped profile is widely used in various construction works, in the construction of metal structures of medium and high importance.
It is important for customers to know how much a meter of channel weighs. The parameter directly affects the total weight of the entire metal structure. Standard sizes with different numbers have their own weight, which is clearly regulated by GOST 8240-97 . This is the main document that guides manufacturing plants when creating metal profiles. Depending on the models - from No. 5 to No. 40, the products weigh from 4.84 to 48.3 kg - this is the weight of a linear meter of channel.
Ordering a channel: what characteristics you need to know
Metal products for the construction of structures of varying complexity are selected strictly according to the required parameters. The abundance of standard sizes and their modifications makes it easy to choose the most suitable type. Most often, two modifications of channel products are selected:
-
With parallel edges. Metal products are used in the construction industry, including for repair work and the creation of metal structures of varying complexity. The parallel edges have the optimal distance for laying bricks. Creating and strengthening openings with their help is easy.
-
With slanted edges inward. The second most popular version of channel models is used in the field of small and large construction.
There are additional types of metal products that are in demand. Profiles can be special, economical, and lightweight. They are marked with the letters “S”, “E”, “L”, respectively. Special and economical products are made to order. The first is based on the personal dimensions of customers, the second is with reduced shelf thickness. This allows you to reduce the total weight of 1 m of channel and the entire finished structure.
The lightweight standard size is suitable for less critical buildings where it is not necessary to create a large-scale stiffening frame. The marking “a” is placed on models of the “P” and “S” series. It denotes the weighted mass of the channel. Most often, metal depots always have categories “P” and “U” in stock - they are in demand among customers.
How much does a channel weigh, other sizes
For production, the standard steel used is St3ps-5 grade - the basis for the strength and indestructibility of metal structural parts. Hot-rolled models are produced from other suitable steel grades - carbon, high-alloy, atmospheric corrosion-resistant. 09G2S is often added to the St3 brand. The table below shows the weight characteristics of metal products.

The linear weight of channels should not exceed 6% . Such regulations are prescribed in a state document. Taking into account the tolerances for maximum deviations in total, the weight of a meter of channel should not exceed 7-8%. If violations are noticed in the production regulations, then the metal profiles are considered unsuitable.

- From carbon boiling and semi-calm steel – 8.71 (kg).
- Made of carbon mild and low-alloy steel – 9.32 (kg).
Weight of 1 (m) bent unequal-flange channel 160x50x30x4 (mm), dimensions are indicated in the format “wall height / flange width 1 / flange width 2 / rolled thickness”:
- From carbon boiling and semi-calm steel – 7.07 (kg).
- Made of carbon mild and low-alloy steel – 6.96 (kg).
Weight of 1 (m) hot-rolled steel equal-flange channel 160x64x5 (mm), dimensions are indicated in the format “wall height/flange width/rolled thickness”:
- With a slope of the inner edges of the shelves - 14.2 (kg).
- With parallel edges of shelves – 14.2 (kg).
Important: when calculating the weight of 1 (m) channel, the steel density is taken to be 7850 (kg/m3), the characteristics of bent and hot-rolled steel channels are determined by the standards GOST 8278-83, GOST 8281-80, GOST 8240-89.
