How to make a conductor for cold forging with your own hands

Admiring the beauty of an openwork metal fence or admiring the incredible twisted pattern on the railing of an iron staircase, few people think that they were made using the cold forging method. You can learn to embody beauty in metal without much effort.

To do this, it is enough to have minimal skills in working with metal and have special machines for cold forging. What is cold forging? What machines are needed for it? What can be made on these machines? You will find answers to these questions in our article.

It would be more correct to call cold forging - mechanical bending of a metal rod on specialized machines to give it the shape intended by the manufacturer. Bending rods in the machine can be done either manually using levers or using electric motors. In addition to metal rods, cold forging can be used to bend small-diameter pipes, narrow iron strips and fittings. Using the cold forging method the following are produced:

  • Twisted fences.
  • Decorations for residential buildings.
  • Patterned gate.
  • Railings for balconies and stairs.
  • Metal garden benches.
  • Decorations for gazebos and lanterns.
  • A large number of grating options.

Elements made by cold forging

Having mastered the cold forging method, you can easily start your own business producing metal products. At the same time, you will only need initial financial investments for the purchase of machines, and if you make the machines yourself, you can get by with minimal costs.

Cold forging machines

Below we will give you instructions on how to assemble cold forging machines yourself.

Machine "snail"

Making a snail machine is one example of independent design, and it makes no sense to give advice with an exact indication of the dimensions of all parts. You need to be guided by your idea of the operation of the machine, how and what will bend, how many turns of the spiral will be enough for high-quality work, what size the lever with the tabletop will be. If you understand the essence of the machine manufacturing process, then the assembly itself will not cause any particular difficulties.

Machine “snail”

Manufacturing of main machine components

Frame.

The process of bending an iron rod exposes the machine to heavy loads, so when making the frame for the “snail”, only a metal corner, channel or thick-walled pipe is used. Do not make a frame from wooden beams; such a table cannot withstand prolonged loads and collapses.

Tabletop.

The tabletop for the “snail” is made of a metal plate cut in the shape of a circle, at least 4 mm thick. From the same slab, a second tabletop is cut out, repeating the shape of the first. The snail segments will be placed on the second tabletop and the products will be bent. During the cold forging process, the tabletop takes on the bulk of the load, so there is no need to save money and make it from a thinner sheet of iron.

Main shaft and lever.

The main shaft is placed centrally between the tabletops and is attached to the base using four right triangles.
The shaft can be made from a thick-walled pipe of the required diameter. The lever is attached to the shaft using a ring and rotates around it; in addition, a roller is installed on the lever for bending the rods on the upper tabletop.

Machine diagram

Marking and installation of attachments

Depending on whether you want to produce only the same type of samples or you need more artistic products, there are three options for the snail device.
Option #1.
This is the simplest of the three options; its essence is that the outline of a spiral is drawn on the tabletop.

Drawing of the snail segments

At its core, this is a drawing of future products that you will produce on the machine. After applying the diagram, it is enough to cut out several segments from thick strips of iron of different widths that follow the line of the drawing and weld them to the tabletop according to the markings.

With such a static “snail” you can make simple bends.
Option #2.
The second option is the most popular among homemade machines; it involves making a collapsible snail from removable parts. Holes are drilled along the contours of the markings into which threads are cut.

Next, templates for the stop segments are made from cardboard or plywood and metal overlays are made from them. Finally, holes are drilled in the pads, which should coincide with the mounting sockets on the tabletop. To secure the segments, bolts are mainly used, but you can also make cylindrical stops.

This “snail” design will allow the production of spiral-shaped workpieces with different radii on one machine.

“Snail” made of metal strips

Option #3.
In the third option, instead of collapsible stop segments, several removable modules are made with different volute options, which change as needed. The module is made of a piece of iron onto which segments repeating parts of the spiral are welded.

Snail modules

Machine assembly.

  1. Install the frame in a place where you will have easy access to the machine from all sides.
  2. Concrete the legs of the frame in the floor or secure the frame in another accessible way.
  3. Weld the main table top to the frame.
  4. Install the main shaft by welding it to the tabletop and strengthening it with triangles.
  5. Place the rotating lever onto the shaft.
  6. Install the top tabletop by welding it to the main shaft.
  7. Place the snail segments on the tabletop.

After assembly, test bend the rod.

Torsion bar machine

This machine is designed for uniaxial longitudinal twisting of a workpiece from a transverse or square rod.

Torsion bar machine

A channel or I-beam is used for the base of the torsion bar machine. A thick iron strip is attached to it by welding, onto which a vice is installed to clamp the stationary part of the rod. The vice is secured with four bolts with a diameter of M16 or more. To increase the clamping strength of the bar, corrugated sheet steel plates are welded onto the vice.

On the opposite side of the base, guide rollers are installed, to which a clamping unit for the movable part of the workpiece is attached. It is made of a steel bushing, in which it is necessary to provide holes for clamping bolts located at an angle of 120 degrees. The bolts must have a flat end and be made of high quality steel.

Both clamping devices must be positioned coaxially; to do this, they must be checked using a level, a plumber's square and a caliper.

Types of machines

Next, you need to make a handle for turning the moving part of the clamp.
Its lever should hit as long as possible to reduce the applied force. It is better to make the handle itself with a rubber bushing to prevent the hand from slipping during operation. After the machine is fully assembled, it is checked for the reliability of the moving elements and the accuracy of the deformation of the bar. After checking, the machine is attached to the support frame.

A simple model of a torsion bar machine

How to make a torsion bar machine with your own hands, watch the video:

Machine "gnitik"

To qualitatively form a corner in a product produced by cold forging, you will need a machine called a “bend”. It consists of a steel plate with a movable stop on which there are two support shafts and a lever.

Machine “gnutik”

The workpiece is placed between the wedge and the support shafts. After this, with the help of a lever, the wedge is shifted towards the shafts, which leads to bending of the workpiece.

Computer model of the machine

Making such a machine is quite simple, the main thing is to follow the given drawing and use tool steel, since during operation a large load is placed on part of the device.
You can also watch how to make a “gnitik” machine in the video:

Wave machine

It would be more correct to call this machine a controlled wave. The equipment of the machine consists of a pair of steel disks with a diameter of 140 mm, which are bolted to the worktop. The axis of rotation of the universal wrench is fixed to the drive disk.

Machine “wave”

Wave control occurs as a result of changing the distance between the disks.
When the bar is rolled around the drive disk with a knob, a pattern is formed, after which the bar is removed from the conductor and a pattern is formed on the other side. You can watch the machine in action in the video:

Machine - press

A press is needed to form the ends of the rods. This machine works on the principle of a flywheel; first, by rotating the bar with weights, the screw striker is pulled back until it stops. After this, a replacement stamp is inserted into the slot and the workpiece is placed. Next, quickly spin the bar in the opposite direction and leave it to rotate freely. Finally, the striker hits the stamp shank strongly, due to this, a force sufficient for stamping is developed.

Rolling press

As for the manual rolling mill, you can make it yourself, but you still have to order special steel rolls, bearing bushings and shafts, and buy gears in the store. Only “crow’s foot” and “leaf” tips can be produced on such a machine.

Connecting and painting parts

Elements produced by cold forging are connected in two ways:

  • Welding - parts are welded to each other, and the scale is ground off with a grinder or other grinding machine.
  • Clamps - this type of connection looks much more beautiful. For clamps, stamped strips of metal with a thickness of 1.5 mm or more are used.

Finished products are painted using blacksmith enamels or acrylic-based metal paints.

Connecting parts using welding

Products produced by cold forging

We invite you to familiarize yourself with the options for products that you can make using the cold forging method:

  • The fence element is completely made using the cold forging method. Clamps are used to connect the parts. The following machines were used for manufacturing: “snail”, torsion bar, “bend” and “flashlight”.
  • Soda bench - made by cold forging and covered with wood. Welding and clamps are used to connect the elements. Machines used in production were “snail”, torsion bar, and press.
  • Balcony railings - production method - cold forging. The railing elements are connected using welding and clamps. The machines used in production are “wave”, “snail”, press.
  • Stair railings are produced using the cold artistic forging method. The parts are connected by welding. The machines used in production are torsion bar, flashlight, and snail.
  • Visor - the frame of the visor is made using cold forging. The parts are connected by welding. In the manufacturing process, machines were used - “snail”, “wave”, press.
  • The grill is a simple design made using the cold forging method. Clamps and welding are used to connect the parts. The barbecue elements were produced on machines - torsion bar, "snail".
  • Double bed - cold forging method is used for the backrests. Connections are made by welding and clamps. In the manufacturing process, machines were used - “snail”, “wave” and press.

As can be seen from all of the above, the cold forging method does not require large financial costs and is quite easy to learn, so if you decide to start learning blacksmithing with this method, then you did the right thing.

DIY cold forging snail

How to make a conductor for cold forging with your own hands

Since ancient times, hot forging has been known to mankind. The workpiece, heated to increase ductility, was subjected to molding by blows of a heavy hammer. This is how they received weapons and tools, household utensils and jewelry.

Hot artistic metal forgingForging

Hot forging requires highly qualified and experienced blacksmiths, large amounts of labor, materials and complex equipment. Cold forging allows you to produce products from square and round steel without installing expensive and bulky equipment and without setting up complex technological processes.

Cold forging method

The method involves using an important property of metal - plasticity. With the help of various mandrels and mechanical devices, the rod is bent in different directions, twisted, and forms various three-dimensional shapes.

As additional processing, welding and metalworking operations are used to connect parts of workpieces. Entry-level machines are quite simple and are driven by the muscular strength of the master working on them.

The technology is quite accessible for mastering in a home workshop.

The minimum set of forging equipment for cold forging of metal includes:

  • Bending machines, or Gnutiki, are used to bend workpieces at a given angle and radius.
  • Twisters, or torsion bars, are used to twist a workpiece (or group of workpieces) around the longitudinal axis
  • Wave - used to create periodic bends in different directions.
  • Snail forging machine - used to create spiral-shaped curls at the end of a rod.

Is it possible to master cold forging yourself? Yes, it is enough to have basic skills in metalwork, design and machining.

Many home craftsmen have made a snail - a cold forging machine on their own, without using expensive components.

Types, structure and principle of operation of the cochlea

Several varieties of the popular machine are used. All of them, regardless of the details of the cochlea device, use a general operating principle. A strip or rod of metal is forcefully pressed against a stationary template or against a movable ploughshare of the snail, forcing it to take the shape specified in the drawing.

Monolithic volute for cold forgingRemovable volute designDismountable volute with rotation

There are:

  • monolithic non-separable volute using a fixed metal template. Used to produce series of identical products
  • removable design - bending is carried out around pins inserted into holes on a solid plate. Suitable for the production of unique parts with complex configurations, the cross-section of the rod is limited.
  • Collapsible volutes with rotation are more complex in design, but make it possible to obtain identical products of complex shape with great accuracy

Making a simple snail with your own hands

The cold forging process requires significant effort. Therefore, before making a snail for cold forging with your own hands, you will need to significantly strengthen an ordinary workbench or build a new one.

Self-assembly of the machine must be carried out on a tabletop made of a plate at least 4 mm thick. Next, to make a homemade snail for cold forging, you will need a drawing. The outline of the future product must be drawn on it, and the outlines of a non-separable template or segments of a collapsible template must be inscribed on the inside of this outline.

Next, we will consider the manufacture of three versions of the snail for cold forging:

  • Monolithic non-removable
  • Removable design
  • Collapsible snail with rotation

Depending on the capabilities of the home craftsman, product production plans, and the number of different standard sizes, you can choose one of these design options.

Particular attention should be paid to the development of the template diagram, since after welding to the plate it will be very difficult to make adjustments to the dimensions and configuration. The turns of the future curl should be placed at a distance of 12-13 mm, taking into account that a 10 mm rod should fit into the resulting grooves.

Monolithic non-demountable snail

A base with a diameter of 80 cm is cut out of a plate with a thickness of 4 mm, then according to the drawing, a template for a curl is cut out and formed from a strip with a thickness of 3 mm. To make bending easier, it should be calcined, then an oblique chamfer should be made along the top side, and the bottom should be welded to the base along the contour.

The base is attached to the frame with bolts or clamps. This fastening allows you to quickly use different templates as needed.

Removable design

The template for cold forging is made from a steel plate no thinner than 10 mm and is attached to the base with threaded connections. The manufacture of the product begins with the inner curl. The end of the workpiece is clamped into the groove on the inner segment of the template.

Removable snail design

For insurance, you can additionally press it with a small clamp. Using a lever with a large arm, made from a rod with a cross-section of 2 cm, the remaining part of the workpiece is screwed onto the template with force. The design can be improved by using a lever with a movable bearing attached to it.

Collapsible snails with rotation

In this version, the snail template, called a ploughshare, is fixed on a massive plate 4-10 mm thick. The shape of the workpiece is changed by rotating the shaft in which its free end is fixed. The shaft rotates by means of a lever or gate welded to its upper end.

The ploughshare can be made of several segments connected to each other by hinge pins. The curvature of the surface of the share is changed by special adjusting screws. A system of holes must be made in the surface of the base to fasten the plowshare segments in the position specified in the drawing.

Collapsible snails with rotation

It is difficult to make a snail for cold forging with a collapsible share with hinge pins in a home workshop. It will be faster and cheaper to order these parts from production. It is better to make a collapsible ploughshare without hinges with your own hands. It is required to make a drawing of the template parts and mark the mounting holes on it.

A system of holes is drilled in the base to fasten parts of the share in different positions, providing different curvatures.

Now you can, by moving the fasteners from hole to hole, make curls of different radii.

Drawings of a snail for forging

Novice craftsmen often neglect the importance of the design stage and make templates for cold forging by eye. This may be enough to “feel the metal” and understand the essence of the process with your own hands.

Drawing of a snail for forging

But if you want to get beautiful products as a result, and even more so if you are planning to produce a series of identical elements, then when manufacturing a machine you cannot do without accurate calculations of all parameters - bend angles and radii, torques, maximum forces and others. An accurate calculation will allow you to create with your own hands a high-quality snail machine for cold forging, which will last a long time and will delight you with ease of operation and high-quality aesthetic products.

Snail for cold forging: how to make it yourself and drawings for making a homemade machine

How to make a conductor for cold forging with your own hands

Cold forging requires several types of machines, everyone knows this. Which one is number one, that is, the most important? Without which cold forging will not work? There is only one answer: only a snail for cold forging. If you look at it, having only this machine in your arsenal, you can create wonderful forged products from metal curls - from simple ones to real openwork works of art.

Fortunately, snails for cold forging are machines that you can make with your own hands without losing the quality of the products.

How it works and what it is like

At its core, it is the deformation of metal rods in the form of their bending. In order for the rod to deform without heating, it must be rigidly fixed to the machine template. This machine is not for weak hands: scrolling and deformation are done using manual effort.

Of course, the snail can be equipped with an electric motor drive. But before that, you need to carefully consider the feasibility of this drive. The main argument for an electrical addition is the large amount of work involved.

Snail for forging - drawing.

The machine can operate in two different designs:

  1. The simplest option is a template welded to the base. This is a monolithic conductor with a single curl option in the form of a template.
  2. An option that gives more variety in curls is several modules with curls of different diameters, which are attached to one base.

Manual drive can also be provided in different options:

  1. The lever can be any suitable device.
  2. A lever that is attached to a frame and driven by a moving bearing.
  3. More complex designs use as many as three levers that rotate the axis and the conductor attached to it.

How to make a snail for cold forging, which option to choose - easier or more difficult? The choice again depends on expediency, in other words, on your production plans: what are you going to do, with what productivity and in what quantity?

Let's start with something simple: a monolithic snail

What is the work of a master, and how does it differ from other works? The master does any, even the simplest work with feeling, sense and pleasure. What pleasure can there be in independently producing a primitive machine?

And here’s what – clearly structured planned stages of work:

  • A drawing with thoughtful dimensions that can be applied to paper or directly onto the base of the conductor. All dimensions must be strictly observed, up to the thickness of the metal strip matching the thickness of the mold outline in the drawing. By the way, the minimum thickness should be at least 3 mm. The distance between the turns must also be sufficient to accommodate the deformation rod between them. If, say, the size of your rod is 10 mm, then the most optimal distance between the turns will be 12 - 13 mm.
  • The base of the machine must be quite massive; it must be cut from steel with a thickness of at least 4 mm. It is better to make the shape round; the diameter of the circle should be larger than the diameter of the snail. Most often, the size of the base is about 70 mm.
  • To make a curl, the metal strip should be slightly thinner than for the base: 3 mm will be enough. If possible, the workpiece needs to be calcined so that it is better deformed and amenable to processing.
  • The curl shape from the steel strip must be welded to the base, which, in turn, must be firmly fixed to the frame. Do not forget that your machine will have to withstand very serious loads, so do not spare time and effort on maximizing the strength and massiveness of all its elements and, most importantly, the strength of their connections. To do this, for example, the template can be additionally fixed on the frame with a yew. The yew will grab a piece of timber that needs to be welded to the back of the base.

Variety of curls: removable designs

A modular volute differs from a monolithic volute in one way: together with a tightly welded steel template, holes are made in the base for attaching different templates. For such a machine, you need to make the same base on a massive frame and several removable modules.

This type of cold forging machine consists of the following parts:

  • rectangular base made of thick metal sheet, thickness from 4 to 10 mm;
  • collapsible template, can consist of several parts on hinge pins;
  • rotating shaft;
  • drive lever for rotating the shaft.

Such a snail must be attached to the base by means of fixation through drilled holes in different positions. The assembled parts of the curls on the base change, resulting in the curls receiving different curvatures. The steepness of the arc is also regulated by special screws on the connecting hinges.

To be honest, it is very, very difficult to make such a “hinged” option yourself. Most often, craftsmen do the following: they buy ready-made stamps, which are attached to a frame with a base.

Don't ignore the drawings! You can, of course, apply a curl pattern directly to the base without any calculations - “don’t sweat it.” Newbies often do this. But if you claim to be a master and want to make a snail for cold forging with your own hands of high quality, you will have to make drawings with calculations of dimensions and other parameters.

Drawings will be useful to you not only during the manufacturing process of the machine. They will be an extremely useful aid in calculating the materials that you will have to spend on one way or another. Preliminary product drawings will help you calculate, for example, the quantity and cost of metal rods.

Cold forging on a snail remains the most popular type of metal work among amateurs. At the same time, this craft can be practiced professionally. And if for a hobby a homemade machine will be enough for you, then for professional forging you will eventually need a more powerful tool. Good luck to you at the beginning of a long journey.

How to make a snail for cold forging with your own hands - step-by-step instructions and drawings

Any master, setting up a home forge, acquires a minimum set of tools and accessories. But, as a rule, the simplest technological operations with metal blanks are done only at the first stage.

With the acquisition of experience in working with “iron”, both the desire and the need to engage in artistic forging appears - this is both home decoration and additional income. Unfortunately, a machine for giving samples a spiral shape - a snail - is practically not found on sale. One way or another, home craftsmen, as a rule, make it with their own hands. Features of independent design and assembly of a snail for cold forging are the topic of this article.

Features of the snail

The author specifically decided to draw the reader's attention to a number of points. This will help you avoid some mistakes in the future. For example, having understood the structure of the snail and the principle of its functioning, someone will want to assemble their own device, different from those whose drawings will be presented below.

Such a device (if we are talking about equipment made by hand) will allow bending samples using the cold forging method with a cross-section (square side) of no more than 10 - 12 mm. This implies a “manually controlled” snail model. Almost no one has anything to do with larger samples in everyday life. The machine can be improved by installing a drive and an electric motor.

But how rational is this for a small home forge?

  • Cold forging is carried out at low speeds. A sharp change in the geometry of the metal leads to the appearance of cracks (ruptures).
  • You will have to not only select the power of the electric motor, but also the gear ratio of the gearbox. Plus, you need to mount the automation circuit with the installation of the corresponding elements (buttons, starter, and so on). All this significantly complicates the manufacture of the machine.

Making a snail

Several devices are shown in the figure. This is roughly how it should turn out (basically).

Assembling a snail with your own hands is one of the options for independent design, when it makes no sense to give recommendations indicating the exact parameters of all components. Here you need to focus on your own idea of what will bend and how (radii, number of spiral turns, and so on). But if the essence of the manufacturing process becomes clear, then the assembly itself will not cause any difficulties.

Desktop device

The cold forging process requires a lot of effort. If you already have a ready-made workbench, you may have to strengthen it. When making a snail from scratch, the table frame is made only of metal - a channel, a corner, a thick-walled pipe.

It is clear that the tabletop should also be metal. During the operation of the snail, it will be subjected to both static and dynamic loads. Therefore, ordinary iron sheet is not suitable. Only a plate, and not less than 4 mm.

Marking and installation of “attached” equipment

Perhaps the most creative stage of work. You can do everything with your own hands. But how, taking into account the future or limiting ourselves to the production of similar samples?

 Option 1. The simplest. The meaning of the operation is that the outline of a spiral is drawn on the tabletop.

Essentially, this is a sketch of future shaped parts, for example, from a rod. After this, it is enough to cut out several segments from a thick strip of iron, bent along a radius. They are welded to the tabletop, and the bending mechanism is basically ready.

Some may find this design more attractive - with a solid stripe.

But practice shows that it is more difficult to work with such a snail. For example, when removing the finished product from it, certain difficulties will arise.

 Option 2. The same, but several contours are drawn. Holes are drilled along each one and threads are cut into them. All that remains is to prepare the templates for the stop segments. They are usually made with your own hands from thick cardboard or plywood.

Overlays are made from metal, in which, after the next marking, holes are also drilled, coinciding with the landing “sockets” in the slab. This design will make it possible to organize the production of spiral-shaped workpieces with different radii on one table. You will only have to, depending on the shape of the bend, install the appropriate segments in certain places. Their fastening to the base is bolted. You can do it differently. Instead of such stops, install cylindrical ones.

For fixation, they are attached with bolts (from the bottom of the slab) or are made immediately with legs (+ thread) and screwed into the tabletop. It's much more convenient with them. And if you have your own mini-lathe, then turning it yourself will take a couple of hours.

 Option 3. Prepare several removable modules that can be changed as needed.

Snail assembly

The ploughshare is installed, the levers and the side stop are attached. All this is clearly visible in the pictures.

Everything that is in the shed (garage, attic) will be used - cuttings of pipes, rods, corners, and the like. If the principle of the snail’s operation is clear, then no further hints are required.

Functionality check

This is always implied, so no comment.

In principle, making a snail for cold forging is not so difficult. Moreover, there is no single standard for such devices. Someone will say – isn’t it easier to buy a factory model? Firstly, as already said, you will have to search for a long time. Secondly, it is not a fact that her capabilities will coincide with the fantasies of the master. Thirdly, you will have to lighten your wallet by about 19,000 (manual) and 62,000 (electric model) rubles, at a minimum.

Good luck in making your own snail!

Homemade devices and machines for cold forging

One way to decorate areas is to use forged items. Fences, benches, gazebos, stair railings and other similar structures look very decorative. Moreover, in most cases, these products are not forging in its traditional sense.

Most often, this is done not in a forge or with a hammer and an anvil, but with the help of some devices that allow you to create a wide variety of patterns and products from metal strips and square rods. To make such products you will need cold forging machines.

Some of them you can make with your own hands, others are easier to buy.

Fences, railings for stairs and balconies can also be made with your own hands. A canopy over the porch using the cold forging method. Railings for a porch are a decoration, and not an exclusively utilitarian device. You can make a gazebo and forged furniture. Gates look magical

What kind of devices are used?

Cold forging is characterized by various curls, bends, twisted rods, etc. Almost every type is made on a separate device - a specific machine. They can be driven manually or electrically. For small volumes “for yourself”, manual cold forging machines are used.

Although they are not particularly productive, they are much easier to manufacture. If it is necessary to put production on stream, similar devices are made, but with electric motors. In this case, there is almost no need to physically work, but the complexity of making the device increases significantly.

In our material we will talk about manual machines for cold forging.

What devices are used:

  • Torsion bars. With their help, tetrahedral rods or strips of metal are twisted in the longitudinal direction. The result is twisted columns, which are also called torsion bars. This is what a torsion bar and a machine of the same name look like
  • Flashlight. On this device, the rod is also twisted in the longitudinal direction, but it is also additionally bent in the transverse direction. It turns out something similar to a flashlight. Hence the name of the device. This is how a “flashlight” is made
  • Twisters or snails. Form flat curls of different diameters. Device for cold forging snail - for forming curls
  • Bending machines or benders. Allows you to bend rods or reinforcement at the required angle in any place. For bending in any place and at any angle - bending machines (bending machines)
  • Wave. In fact, this is also a bend, but of a more complex design - it allows you to change the direction of bending, obtaining wave-like parts. The "Wave" machine - for forming the appropriate relief
  • Devices for processing the ends of parts - inertial stamping machines or other home-made devices. Machines for shaping the ends of rods. In this case - crow's foot

For a beginning craftsman, the most relevant machine for cold forging is a snail. Only with its help you can make many interesting things - from a fence and gate to a bench and other similar products. In second place in terms of necessity is a torsion bar machine. It adds variety to the details. All the rest can be purchased or made as you improve and gain skill.

Homemade “Snails”

In essence, this is a modernized bending machine (pipe bender), but these improvements make it possible to easily make curls from fairly thick rods (up to 10-12 mm cross-section) and repeat them with a high degree of accuracy.

One of the homemade cold forging machines

These cold forging machines have several designs, but the easiest to implement is the one with a round table with a central leg. A lever with rollers on bearings at the end is movably attached to the leg. They make the bending process easier.

The table surface can be made of steel sheet with a thickness of 10 mm or more. For the leg, you can use any thick-walled round pipe. It is important to make the structure stable, since lateral forces will be applied, so side posts, spacers, and a stable base are needed.

Drawing of a cold forging machine “Snail”

It is easier to make a lever from a square pipe with a thick wall - at least 2-3 mm. The cross-section of the pipe is 25*40 mm or so. Attaching the lever to the leg can be done on a bearing, or you can simply take a small piece of thick-walled pipe of a larger diameter, put it on the leg, and weld a stop strip on the bottom so that the lever does not fall down. The option with a bearing gives easier movement, but if there is lubrication, the second option also works.

Lever mounting option

The shape of the lever is also important. The lever is double, the upper part is working, the lower part is supporting. Wherever there are connections, it is advisable to add reinforcement, since the efforts are significant.

The lever must be reliable, with reinforcement

A mandrel or jig is fixed on the table - the shape along which the curls are bent. They are made in different diameters so that you can make curls of different diameters. Such mandrels can be prefabricated to form a larger number of bends. Each such sample must have rods that are installed in holes in the table. This is how this template is fixed. Also, its shape must be designed in such a way that the end of the rod is well fixed in it.

Variant of conductors for the snail

Often, mandrels are machined from a metal circle of a suitable diameter using a grinder, but there are options made of metal with steel plates welded onto it, curved accordingly.

How to make a similar machine for cold forging is in the next video. There is also a good description of how to bring the ends of the workpiece to a decent state - ordinary raw edges look very rough. There is special equipment for processing them, but, as it turns out, you can do it without it.

Torsion bar machine

As already mentioned, these cold forging machines allow you to make longitudinal bends on the rod. This is a relatively simple design. The main task is to fix one end of the rod motionless, attach a lever to the second, with which you can twist the workpiece.

A piece of profiled pipe with a thick wall (at least 3 mm) is suitable as a base. The retainer can be welded from the same rods, leaving a square gap of the required diameter. You can use a properly sized cable clamp (available at a rigging store). Any of these stops is welded to the base.

Cable holder - great for holding rods

Next, you need to somehow ensure grip and torsion of the second part of the workpiece. This can be done using two bearing units. A pipe of a suitable diameter is inserted inside, and a handle is welded to it on one side - the design resembles the letter “T”. On the other hand, a clamp is made in the pipe: four holes are drilled, nuts for 12 or 14 bolts are welded into them. The result is a good clamp - the bolts are tightened after the rod has been inserted.

Bearing unit Clamp for the workpiece This is what the design looks like as a whole

Next - a matter of technique - use a lever to screw in the required number of turns. This is not to say that this work is for weaklings, but with a lot of leverage, everything is not so difficult.

An even simpler machine for making torsion bars using cold forging is in the next video.

Forged curls are universal decorative elements used to complement the design of products of various shapes. For the manufacture of parts of this type , mechanized equipment is used, as well as hand tools and devices . Some equipment is sold at fairly high prices. But there is also the possibility of making (assembling) equipment with your own hands.

Making homemade vertical devices from metal, corrugated pipes and other materials, video

Making machines of any type with your own hands is a complex matter. The manufacture of the component parts of the device, as well as assembly, should be carried out carefully. Correctness guarantees the quality of manufactured elements and metal objects.

Other forging equipment

The entire list of equipment for cold forging should be divided into four separate categories, the criterion for classification being the level of automation.

  • Universal equipment is an automatic or, in some cases, manual installations that allow processing workpieces with different cross-sections. Such multifunctional machines serve as a replacement for a whole set of manual devices used for bending profile pipes, square and round bars. An important advantage of such machines is the ability to produce elements of various shapes.

  • Cold forging machines are designed to facilitate manual labor. In addition to the snail, the list of devices includes a bender, a wave, a twister, and a globe. Each unit is designed to produce a specific type of element . Lever (manual) control allows you to reduce labor costs, but not eliminate them completely. Manual machines are used by craftsmen who engage in forging as a hobby, since the productivity of these devices is not too high. To improve technical characteristics, it is necessary to equip the unit with an electric motor.

Volna type cold forging machine

  • Tools are simple objects , forging is done manually, using force. Tools include a heavy hammer (sledgehammer), pliers, and forks .

Forge fork

  • Devices are more complex objects; they are mechanisms , which include jigs, templates, patterns, and mandrels.

Homemade models, production, how to make, sizes

In addition to the snail-type device, it is also possible to make your own other machines for cold forging: flashlight, wave and others, including electric ones. In most cases, devices are made by hand. Homemade models of different types and sizes allow you to carry out the cold forging process with your own hands and produce elements of the required configurations.

Buy

Performers who are not confident in their own skills have the opportunity to purchase factory-made forging machines. Enterprises offer a wide selection of models of hand-held devices: snails, waves, flashlights, twisters, presses, benders, as well as universal equipment.

Cold forging, do-it-yourself machines and drawings

Forging machines are a good tool for artistic and creative people who have a desire to create something beautiful and individual in their home, to highlight the interior, or to make a good DIY gift for important people. There are two ways to forge metal.

To forge something using the hot forging method, you need to make a lot of preparations and actions, so at home the easiest way to forge it by hand is to use the cold forging method.

The learning curve for this process does not take much time, and there is a real opportunity to design a machine with your own hands.

DIY cold forging machines.

The beginning of cold forging with homemade machines

Cold forging with your own hands requires two mandatory actions - pressing and bending. To perform all these actions, it is not necessary to apply a certain temperature to the metal, but it is still necessary to carry out heat treatment.

To design something with your own hands, it is no longer necessary to have special machines for artistic forging; now you can create machines for forging metal at home. But you still can’t cope with such tools without experience. For all the work to be successful, you need to use metals of a certain thickness.

A homemade cold forging machine can easily be used to create structures that will be much stronger than those made by stamping. Do-it-yourself forged products will turn out to be of high quality when everything is done correctly and without errors, because it is very difficult to correct them. After a few jobs, with the experience gained, you can begin to make excellent designs using homemade cold forging machines and fixtures.

When manufacturing a large number of identical metal structures, it is best to use drawings prepared in advance. Drawings for do-it-yourself cold forging machines are prepared in advance.

In some cases, it will be better to warm up the part in order to get rid of defects in the future. Those who have recently started using homemade machines for cold forging should first think through a work plan, as well as acquire the necessary skills.

The help of various video lessons on the Internet, as well as special courses, will not be superfluous here.

Homemade machine for cold forging.

Machine components and required tools

A do-it-yourself forging machine consists of certain devices. Among which must be:

  1. gnutik;
  2. snail;
  3. wave;
  4. globe;
  5. twister;
  6. flashlight;

These devices are best to use. You will need a do-it-yourself cold forging snail to weave steel rods. You can look at the photo to better see the design and an example of parts. Forging equipment for cold forging of metal plays an important role in the work. The main tool during the work will be a bender. This is a very simple element.

We make a machine.

To process pipes with hexagonal and round cross-sections, a “wave” is used. A “flashlight” is used to bend metal rods, and a twister is somewhat similar to it, a very convenient device. A globe is made into a large arc of profile rods.

Cold forging machines are most profitable to do yourself, because not everything can be processed with hand tools, and the price for an artistic forging machine is very high.

When a master, using his skills and equipment, creates a design, it will be unique and special, even if in some ways it will not be as high quality as the factory one. When manufacturing a large number of parts, it would be correct to create a coductor on an electric motor. This makes the work process easier.

A do-it-yourself cold forging machine must be suitable for types of work such as bending, twisting and drawing.

During the drawing process, the structure takes on a certain shape. Therefore, it must pass through the press, after which the cross-section of the primary material will become smaller. By flexible we mean creating a bend at the desired angle. For this you will need templates.

Photos of drawings of forged products with your own hands are prepared in advance from which the template will be made. The curl is attached to the steel plate, and the sheet itself is secured in the machine holder. A slot is placed at the end of the workpiece, and the other end is secured in place.

Using a lever, the end of the structure is influenced, which must be carried out along each bend of the plate, which is used as a template.

DIY cold forging machines

Many experienced manufacturers assemble simple mechanisms with their own hands, which allow them to create unique designs. This is influenced by work experience. Drawings for do-it-yourself cold forging machines can be found in sufficient quantities on the Internet, as well as photos of cold forging products that can be obtained in the end. A photograph of such equipment allows the master to complete the drawing from scratch, if he has experience.

You can consider the “Snail” machine. Using it you can create various spirals or waves. To create such a machine, you need to have drawings for a do-it-yourself cold forging machine of this type, and also do everything in accordance with the technology.

The working surface must consist of sheet metal. 4 mm thickness will be enough. Dimensions are set based on the size of the part. To give the shape, sheet metal 3 mm thick and in the form of strips is required.

It is bent according to the template with pliers and a spiral is obtained.

To create a normal work process, you need to firmly fix one of the ends of the part. A rod equal to the width of the strips will help with this. To secure the work platform you will need to use a workbench. The main goal of everything is to give maximum immobility to the part, because during cold forging you need to put in a lot of effort.

Before starting the manufacture of any cold forging machine, using hand-made tools, you need templates, sketches and various drawings, including a drawing for do-it-yourself cold forging equipment.

You can make your markings more accurate by using graph paper. You need to draw a spiral on it, where the turns in the radius will increase. Equal distance must be properly maintained between them. This condition will be mandatory only for creating symmetrical patterns.

Machine design

To create any machine, you can use several options to choose from - collapsible, monolithic or solid.
It is recommended to weld small rods along the entire length of the machine. For this purpose, it is worth drilling special holes at the work site. It is necessary to securely secure the ends of the parts that will bend. This forging method is very popular among blacksmith beginners.

Using a machine for cold forging of metal made by hand, an inexperienced craftsman will be able to make forged balcony canopies, handrails for stairs, various window grilles, fences, numerous home furniture, fences, various forged accessories and decorative items that complement the interior of the premises, on similar to grates for fireplaces. This is a good option for beginners.

How to make a Snail machine for cold forging with your own hands?

The “Snail” machine for cold forging with your own hands is used by most craftsmen when working on original rolled products. The blacksmith business is most often based on the production of forged products, where there are parts in the form of original hinges.

It is impossible to imagine an entrance gate in the style of the 17th-19th centuries without curls, monograms and other original elements. They not only decorate, skilled craftsmen could create written greetings from metal. Complex curved fragments are used as reinforcements on fences, entrances, fence railings and other decorative items. Complex profiles add delicacy to structures.

Devices for bending metal elements “Snail”

To bend workpieces according to certain parameters, auxiliary conductors are used, called “Snail”. They serve as a special template that allows you to reproduce dozens and, if necessary, hundreds of similar parts. The “Snail” machine for cold forging bends parts without additional heating.

The work is based on the deformation of metal according to a certain principle. To bend, you have to put in a lot of effort. Therefore, craftsmen quite often equip “Snail” devices with an electric drive. Geared motors help to develop significant forces with a limited shoulder of force application. The torque in the processing area can reach several tens of kilograms.

If such work is performed only due to the physical strength of the blacksmith, the worker will get tired quite quickly. Its productivity will drop to zero. And with a mechanical assistant, hundreds of workpieces can be produced per shift.

It must be taken into account that bending of workpieces is an intermediate stage in the manufacture of complex structures. They still need to be installed in the right place and welded. Only then will an intermediate result be obtained. Then the product will need to be painted and installed at the place of order. All operations will require not only time, but also the physical strength of the master.

Structurally, the device can be:

  • Non-separable, then it will be used to bend parts only to certain lengths. The resulting spiral has certain limitations in use.
  • Prefabricated (there are additional fragments to increase the bending time), and the device can be used to bend long parts. Large sized parts will be received.

To work with parts from small profile pipes, some make manual devices. They involve the use of levers to help move the workpiece around the mandrel. The finished parts are removed from the end, slightly loosening the tension.

Most often in such cases I use square rolled steel □812. Some craftsmen manually bend profile pipes 15·15 mm with a wall of 1.5 mm. For larger products, a mechanical drive is required.

In a simplified way, the technological process of making a “Snail” machine with your own hands can be represented as a series of sequential operations.

  1. A profile of the product to be manufactured is drawn on a sheet of paper. When drawing, the dimensions of the product are maintained. The drawing is needed only to obtain the profile of the part itself. Attention! When processing, the thickness of the workpiece is taken into account. A gap of at least 34 mm is needed, then the product can be removed after bending it in the device.
  2. For most machines, a central stop is made. It will record the beginning.
  3. Different craftsmen use their own fixation techniques, so their products can be distinguished by their handwriting.
  4. A support plate is cut from a steel sheet. The center will be welded to it, as well as the spiral. The thickness of the plate must be at least 3 mm, as significant forces will be applied. The size of the plate in the future will also determine the parameters of the curl.
  5. Using the spiral drawing, the workpiece is bent from the strip. When bending it, the parameters are controlled. The more accurately this element is manufactured, the easier it will be to manufacture elements for forging products. Attention! If it is necessary to make curls with more than one turn, you need to cut the spiral strip diagonally. Therefore, a strip of much wider width is used. The minimum size corresponds to the height of the profile that is going to be bent on the machine.
  6. The device is placed on a special rack to make it easier to form finished products. For small parts it is convenient to place them on a vertical stand.
  7. To make the job easier, weld the handle. It is installed on the reverse side so that it does not interfere with the installation and removal of workpieces.

Step-by-step manufacturing of a small-sized manual machine for making curls

A small machine designed for the production of curls from rolled strip with a width of 2030 mm. It's easy to make it yourself.

Center

First the center is made. To do this, a small fragment of round timber is sawed off. The workpiece is fixed in a vice and the cutting line is marked. Using a cutting disc and an angle grinder, the workpiece is sawed off.

It has a diameter of 38 mm. The side surface is not further processed.

The center length is 28 mm. A little more is possible, but this is enough to bend a strip 30 mm wide.

A hole Ø 8 mm is drilled on a drilling machine. It is placed eccentrically. This situation is due to the fact that it is necessary to make a clamp for the end of the workpiece.

A profile is drawn, which should be removed using cutting and cleaning discs installed on the grinder. The workpiece is secured in a vice and excess metal is removed.

The flap discs protect the surface so that there is a smooth transition between different surfaces of the clamp.

To make it easier to fix the end of the workpiece in the future, you need to drill a hole. It is placed on the radial surface of the center. A hole is drilled for an M10 thread.

Using a set of taps, the internal thread is cut. A headless screw will be used here. After fixing the workpiece, it will hide inside the metal of the center.

The center is welded to the 4 mm thick base plate. This completes the work of its production.

Making a fixture

To make it easier to work with the device, a shaft is welded to the back side of the plate. By rotating it in a special mandrel, the snail will rotate.

The outer surface must be ground so that the welds do not interfere with the free fit of future workpieces.

The future spiral is drawn on the plate. A contour is created where it will be welded later.

A spiral is bent from a strip 4 mm thick. It must correspond to the project.

After checking the spiral against the template, the excess is cut off, and the spiral itself is welded to the plate and to the center.

A 40×40 mm profile pipe with a 3 mm wall is used as a stand. Holes are drilled on it for attaching machine elements. Using support platforms, the prepared parts are fixed.

The handle is visible on the reverse side. It was secured to the shaft using a bearing. The prepared “Snail” can rotate.

A performance check is being carried out. The handle turns the spiral around the center axis.

Making a simple part on a machine

The strip steel workpiece is cut to the required size. This size is usually clarified by drawing the finished product and its component elements.

The free end is placed in the center of the spiral. The workpiece is secured using an internal screw.

The “Snail” rotation is performed. The workpiece is pressed tightly against the guides. This requires some effort to obtain the desired product profile.

By turning the device further, a curl is made. If necessary, insert the other end of the workpiece and make a closed or open curl.

Usually the other end does not stay straight. It is also bent. Therefore, a distinction is made between internal and external reverse curls. Marks are made on the device itself using a marker or chalk. They are used as a guide when making curls with the required parameters.

As you can see from the step-by-step guide, using a simple set of tools, a homemade curl maker is easy to make. How much does it cost? Its price is determined by the cost of the blanks. Often the price is minimal.

If you try to bend a profile pipe without special preparation, the weld will come apart. It will be a marriage.

Blacksmiths with extensive experience make more complex machines to make their products. They additionally equip the “Snail” with removable elements.

Step-by-step technological process for making a reverse curl on the “Snail” machine

The rolling rollers perform sequential crimping of the pipe. Protruding ribs are formed, and the weld remains inside the layer, offset to the center.

The pipe ends are compressed on parallel eccentric rollers. It becomes like a stripe. In this form it is easier to fix it on the machine.

The shank is formed in a special device. Now the workpieces will be fixed on the machine in one movement.

The workpiece is fixed in the center. There is a groove that secures the shank. It can be seen that the spiral has a uniform descent in height.

After fixing the shank, the electric motor is turned on. Forming of the part begins.

The loop is formed when the workpiece touches a special support element. It is more often called the support shaft. To reduce the force, it is equipped with a bearing. The part rotates freely around the support.

Part of the spiral is formed. But if it is necessary to process for a longer length, a removable element will be installed.

A blank is also formed from the other end. Here the master determines in which direction to bend the part.

To continue work, a removable element of the “Snail” assembly is installed.

Now you can form the bend of large parts.

Even long workpieces are easily bent to specified dimensions. Marks are made on the work items. They are used to guide how much to bend.

On the reverse side, additional bending of the part is performed.

The product is being finalized on both sides.

The finished part has a finished appearance. If necessary, the shanks will be sawed off. Then no one will guess how the workpieces were fixed.

If you need to make a small part, then use another “Snail”. Experienced craftsmen have several of them.

Examples of products with curls

Original canopy over the entrance to the building:

When decorating a French balcony, original curls give an openwork look to the entire product.

On a flight of stairs, the curls look very original.

Using only curls, they make supports for the bench, and also create a grate for the fireplace in the same style.

The hand of an excellent craftsman is visible on the spiral staircase. Not everyone will be able to make such a product.

The gate leaf contains elements made on the “Snail” machine. The heavy product acquired a special lightness.

Light staircase in high-tech style. It can decorate not only a country house. Modern palaces with minimalist design can have an excellent appearance.

The scope for creativity is unlimited. Many blacksmiths are true artists. They decorate the world around them.

“Snail” – cold forging with your own hands.

Conclusion

  • The cold forging method, which uses Snail machines, allows you to produce original curls.
  • You can make a simple machine with your own hands. It can be used to produce professional blanks.
  • A complex machine with removable elements will allow the production of large spatial parts.
  • The use of curls in the manufacture of blacksmith's products opens up wide possibilities for creativity.

Do-it-yourself cold forging - drawings, machine, step-by-step instructions for beginners and tips on choosing ideas for forging

When a person learned to work with metal, he radically improved his standard of living and changed it thoroughly. This was felt not only during the war, but also in everyday peaceful life. She became much more comfortable and beautiful. Through cold forging, craftsmen make amazing things from metal.

Which, in principle, is very simple. It is enough to have the desire, experience and special equipment.

Cold forging products

Essentially, this is bending and twisting metal products without heating them in a forge. For this purpose, various machines are used, differing in size and purpose.

Using them, you can use cold forging (bends, kinks, twists) to create anything you want with a metal rod, fittings, strip, pipe, and produce various decorative items.

In particular, through artistic forging you can make:

  • Fences;
  • Decorate living spaces with fancy ornaments;
  • Apply twisted patterns to the gate;
  • Protect stairs and balconies with metal ligature;
  • Make backs and armrests for chairs, armchairs, garden benches;
  • Decorate gazebos and street lights;
  • Make various gratings.

To easily do all of the above, in most cases a manual forging machine is sufficient, which is quite easy to make with your own hands.

Classification

To work with metal you need equipment. Also, for the manufacture of certain products with a rather complex configuration through cold forging, various drawings and quality control measuring instruments will be needed.

Without any problems, if you have all the necessary tools, you can make the following types of machines:

  • "Snail";
  • Torsion bar machine;
  • "Gnutik";
  • "Wave";
  • Press.

Let's briefly look at the features of each machine and the assembly features.

"Snail"

This machine is designed for bending reinforcement, pipes, strips and other metal workpieces in the form of a spiral. During the manufacturing process, it is enough to have an idea of how the device works in order to design it correctly.

During the installation process, you should pay attention to the following points:

The supporting frame (table) on which the workpieces will be bent must be made of metal (channel, thick-walled pipe, corner), but not wood. Since most of the load will be placed on it during operation, it must be durable and not fall apart at one point!

Tabletop. It is cut from a metal sheet with a thickness of 4 mm or more, and has a round shape. On top of it, the same snail with all the segments is cut out and laid, on which the blanks will be bent.

It is worth noting that you should not save on the thickness of the tabletop. It bears all the dynamic load. The thicker the sheet of metal from which it will be cut, the better.

Main articulated shaft. It is made from pipes with fairly thick walls. Placed along the central axis between two tabletops. Attached to the base with four rectangular corners (triangles).

Lever with roller. It is attached to the shaft, carrying out rotational movements around it during the process of bending the metal.

This is the simplest version of a do-it-yourself cold forging machine, accessible for installation without much effort. If you need to make more complex products, it will have to be modified.

"Gnutik"

Designed to bend the workpiece at a certain angle (usually straight or sharp). Its design is simple:

  • Tool steel plate;
  • Movable stop (wedge);
  • Support shafts (2 pcs.);
  • Lever arm

In order to understand how to assemble it correctly, you can look at the photos that show various machines for cold forging and the features of their installation yourself, or a video that is freely available on the Internet.

"Wave"

The machine allows, due to controlled shafts (disks), to perform various zigzag and sinusoidal bends (it all depends on the design).

As in the previous design, there are static and moving parts. One disk rotates along an axis around the other due to a lever (knob). When the distance between them changes, a wave of one configuration or another is obtained.

Press

Its task is to form the tips (“leaf” and “crow’s foot”). Essentially, it flattens the end of the workpiece, giving it one shape or another. The most complex of the designs, components for which (especially the firing pin) will have to be purchased separately.

Sometimes it makes more sense to purchase the entire machine rather than assemble it in parts. But this is easier and more financially profitable for everyone.

Artistic cold forging is an art. Basically, it acquired a purely decorative color, without losing practicality and expediency. You can make amazing things from metal rods, fittings and other materials.

The main thing is to purchase or make with your own hands all the necessary machines and equipment to make your dreams of beauty come true.
