How to make an engraving

DIY artistic engraving

How to make an engraving

Engraving is a thin, elegant pattern that is transferred to the selected material in a special way using special tools. This is usually done in special workshops, but this does not mean that it is impossible to do engraving at home. On the contrary, with an engraver and a set of special burs for engraving, even a child can handle this.

What is the best way to engrave on a watch, on a pen, on plastic?

You can use engraving on almost any material - this primarily depends on the design technique you choose. For example, regular engraving on fabric using a Dremel is impossible - diamond drills are not designed for this material. However, with a laser engraver you can transfer any design, even onto the thinnest canvas, without damaging it.

Laser engraving is used to draw on absolutely any surface and is often used for advertising purposes. Logo inscriptions are often written on tokens, spoons and cups.

A laser device is also suitable for manual work, but in most cases a mechanical Dremel is preferable. It is easier to learn and costs several times less.

How to engrave on metal?

In order to make a beautiful inscription on an axe, dirk or knife, you will need an engraver with a special metal bur. There are several options for applying a pattern to such material - with and without chemical tinting (blackening).

The use of additional chemicals for tinting or grinding metal is used during mechanical engraving with a drill or a special cutter. But working with a laser tool does not require this - specific melting and coloring of the metal occurs here using a laser.

Engraving on aluminum at home can be done without the help of special tools. To work with this metal, the etching method is often used - a special treatment using a chemical solution and electric current.

Laser, engraver or electrolyte: which is better to choose?

With all the abundance of techniques, most often for do-it-yourself engraving they use a mechanical machine - an engraver. It is perfect for signing a Parker pen, making a beautiful frame for a mirror, or making a dedicatory inscription on a knife.

To do this, it is enough to know which attachment can be used for a particular material. For example, to engrave a knife with your own hands, you should use a special metal bur.

 You determine in advance what kind of inscription will be on your knife using a stencil or transfer it from a sheet of paper.

In addition to mechanical action, you can use chemical etching to decorate a knife. But you won’t be able to engrave a lighter using this method - the object must be completely immersed in the electrolyte. And during the reaction, there is no guarantee that the contents of this item will not explode (rather the opposite). Therefore, when choosing which engraving to do, choose a mechanical or laser model.

Do-it-yourself glass engraving: features of working at home

Glass engraving is a fairly common way to decorate glass furniture and mirrors. In this case, thin openwork patterns reminiscent of frost are applied to the glass surface. On an industrial scale, patterns on mirrors or glass products are made using a laser cutter.

Undoubtedly, they look very impressive, especially if the item is backlit, but they have a significant drawback - they are stereotyped. If you want a truly original plexiglass product, arm yourself with a diamond drill, silver powder and patience.

For a beautiful drawing, you should first draw the main lines, sprinkle them with powder and complete the drawing by detailing it.

Do-it-yourself engraving on leather

You can apply a beautiful ornate inscription to a diary, passport cover or belt in a special workshop or do it yourself.

However, for beginners, making a complex pattern will be extremely difficult - the technique of engraving on leather requires precise movements and a huge amount of patience. Therefore, before starting complex multifaceted work, it is worth paying attention to training.

This way you can master the skill of operating special tools - knives of different sizes and different degrees of sharpening.

You can combine skillful engraving on leather with stamping and embossing - it looks very impressive and looks organic. However, it is worth considering that all these techniques are only suitable for working on natural leather - the substitute has a more fragile and delicate structure.

DIY wood engraving

This type of wood decoration is most often done using an engraver. To work, you will need a special type of graver, punch, cutter, laser or mechanical engraver. They have different shapes and diameters, for drawing lines of different thicknesses and depths. Engraving on a wooden object also requires a certain amount of caution and composure - even when working with a stencil, you will not have insurance against careless movements.

When working on wood, it is also very important to do the background filling correctly - it should convey the transition from light to darker shades with maximum accuracy. It is better to do this using a medium-thick bur and without unnecessary pressure - this way you will get the most believable picture.

Do-it-yourself stone engraving

Making an engraving on stone is a very painstaking and difficult task. This is usually done using a TPU (milling and engraving machine). A special cutter is inserted into it, which continuously rotates and makes the desired pattern in the stone.

Most often, this stone processing technique is used on granite. This is explained by the peculiarity of this stone - a smooth and even surface. However, it is completely unsuitable for beginners, as all the irregular and uneven lines will be visible on it. Sea pebbles with a flat, smooth surface are best suited for training. These are usually stones made from soft sedimentary rocks that can be easily machined.

In addition to the cutter and stencil, you must use special safety glasses when working with this material, as stone fragments can damage your eyes.

Features of certain types of decoration by engraver

Nowadays, do-it-yourself keyboard engraving is very popular. The thing is that most high-quality imported computer devices do not have a Russian font. This is what is most often applied using a thin needle and drill. With some experience, you can easily make your keyboard special and individual.

Also, using a Dremel and a wood bit, you can make an elegant personalized engraving on a gun, or rather on its butt. This will help you not only make your weapon beautiful, but also recognizable (which will be very useful if it is lost or stolen).

This type of decoration, such as engraving, is used to apply memorable inscriptions to gifts and other significant items.

Engraving is most often done for memorable dates, anniversaries and weddings. What engraving to do on wedding rings is a question that worries many newlyweds. After all, such decor solves two very important problems at once - it makes a standard ring individual and seals the young union with a meaningful phrase (or just a date). However, it is worth remembering that you can only engrave the inside of the ring and only after you have decided on the exact size.

For a friend (or girlfriend), you can make a beautiful engraving on a diary or notepad. This is possible provided that the cover is made of genuine leather - only on it, with the help of thin blades, you will get a real work of art.

You can also do laser engraving, where instead of a knife, thin lines are made with a laser. Working with such an installation is quite simple, but requires special skills (and the device is quite expensive).

Therefore, if you do not want to do this professionally, use simpler tools.

Business on laser engraving

How to make an engraving

The graveratik is an excellent machine for a small business that can be placed on a warm balcony, bathroom or garage.

What can be done on an engraver

We highlight two main areas of work: the production of goods for wide consumption by individuals (private owners) and for companies (cafes, firms, restaurants, coffee shops, etc.).

Working with individuals at the first stage is easier, since legal entities (companies or individual entrepreneurs) will most likely want to receive consumable documents for products (invoices).

But this, in principle, is not necessary - it depends on whether the company needs these papers to be accepted as expenses and how cheaper you can make the products than competing companies. Often you can agree to fulfill an order in cash. For example, for the owner of a small coffee shop this will probably be even easier.

You can earn more on products for legal entities (companies and individual entrepreneurs) due to the volume of the order. But you shouldn’t neglect orders from private traders.

Phone cases

A popular trend in recent years is the production of wooden covers. There is no need to make the case itself - you can order it on the Aliexpress website. Together with delivery, it will cost around 300 rubles (if you order 1 piece at retail), wholesale will naturally be even more profitable.

In addition to cases, you can engrave a stand for your phone or tablet. Ready-made coasters are sold at Ikea for 150 rubles apiece. You can find cheaper ones on Aliexpress.

Laser engraving on wood

This group of products includes a huge number of finished products. Here we briefly list what you can do:

  • Cutting boards
  • Caskets
  • Backgammon and chess
  • Bottle boxes
  • Wedding wish books
  • Watch
  • Stylized packaging

It is also worth paying attention to thematic items with images that have a strong emotional response among certain people.

For example, fishermen will be happy to receive a fishing rod (a box for hooks, sinkers and other paraphernalia) with a picture of themselves holding a fish as a gift. Motorcycle lovers will pay great interest to items with “iron horses” printed on them.

The same goes for housewives, hunters, gun enthusiasts, car club members, fans of a particular artist, pet owners, etc.

Engraving of portraits

This topic is a continuation of our other direction - burning portraits on wood on a nichrome Pyroprinter machine. The best image quality with all halftones can only be obtained on a nichrome machine. In this case, the laser draws dots and the quality of the picture will differ, as we wrote earlier. However, the laser makes it possible to engrave other materials, so this topic also has its place.

  • Portraits on a tree
  • Illuminated portraits on acrylic
  • Portraits on glass
  • Portraits on leather notebooks

You can offer to make such portraits to those who are looking for birthday gifts. Many people do not want to give money or certificates. This is especially true for gifts from young people to girls, brothers and sisters, as well as gifts for parents. Such an unusual portrait will become an original gift.

Laser engraving on leather or leatherette

Leather is an excellent material for applying designs or text. If ordinary embossing does not always look contrasting and clear, then the engraving will definitely stand out well against the background of the skin, both light and dark. In addition to their stylish appearance, these products (unlike decorative items) have a useful function and people use them regularly.

Here's a short list of what you can do:

  • Cover for passport and other documents
  • Key holders
  • Notebooks
  • Notepads
  • Diaries
  • Business card holders
  • Belts
  • Bags

  • Engraving on veneer
  • Engraving on the paneling
  • Engraving on laminates

Package

The finished product can be beautifully packaged in craft paper, cardboard or wooden packaging with beautiful engraving on it.

Cutting felt products and engraving other fabrics

The graveratik also copes with cutting felt. Laser can be used to process different types of fabrics to cut the material or apply engraving in the form of an original design. Laser processing is non-contact and does not require the use of additional tools, so the material does not warp.

Products for cafes

  • wooden business cards;
  • luminous acrylic signs with engraving;
  • wooden wall panels with drawings or texts;
  • wooden menus for cafes, printing logos on pizza trays;
  • applying company logos to notepads, diaries, business card holders and other business paraphernalia
  • dishes

Firms

The first thing that comes to mind is traditional stylized business paraphernalia with company logos:

  • diaries
  • calendars
  • notepads
  • Pens
  • Mugs

However, there is another interesting area of use of laser - Glowing signs

Production of seals and stamps

Stamps for organizations and individual entrepreneurs are made using CNC laser machines on special rubber. The essence of the technology is the same as when engraving wood - the laser burns the material into depth. How is such volumetric embossing achieved? Moreover, the rubber manufacturer claims that when engraving this material there is no unpleasant odor due to the fact that there is no sulfur in such rubber (unlike regular rubber)

But here you need to understand a number of nuances - if you want to engage only in this type of business, then most likely you will need a powerful laser for adequate printing speed. Another important point is the dimensions of the machine. The larger the size of the working field, the more the quality of the elements suffers. Therefore, stamp manufacturers often use lasers with a CO2 tube.

Manufacturing of embossing presses

Delrin is the trade name for a group of materials called polyacetals. This material is excellent for laser engraving because its surface can be easily removed by the laser beam. Delrin laser can be used to cut and engrave.

These embossing presses are used by notaries, companies, engineers and government agencies to add raised embossing to signatures to protect important documents from fraudulent copying.

How to make an inscription on a stone

Engraving on rings - the best ideas, phrases and designs for wedding and simple rings

The original engraving of wedding rings is another touching declaration of love. In addition, it allows you to make the wedding ceremony more intimate. The engraved message will remind the couple for years to come of the promises they made to each other at the altar.

Is it possible to do

The tradition of engraving jewelry came to us from Ancient Rus'. In those days, before getting married, a guy and a girl had to exchange rings with special inscriptions reflecting their common view of family life. There was a belief that these phrases would help the newlyweds follow their chosen path.

Wedding rings were considered heirlooms and were passed down from generation to generation. With the words: “Follow the parting words engraved on the jewelry.”

But there is also a sign that states that putting an inscription on the rings is extremely undesirable - if the surface of the main wedding accessories is smooth, without any decoration, then the path for the spouses will be easy.

Some couples are of the opinion that wedding accessories should not be touched by the hands of others, including the hands of the engraver, otherwise the marriage will be unhappy.

Thus, whether to engrave your rings or not is a matter of your superstition.

Why do you need engraving on rings?

The engraving of the rings is a reflection of the newlyweds’ desire to emphasize their attitude towards family ties. In addition, the inscriptions are applied in order to show the individuality and so-called “zest” of the newly formed unit of society. In addition, the words engraved on the rings serve as a kind of oath of allegiance.

Methods of applying an inscription

If you carefully examine the photo of engraving on rings, you will notice that there are the following methods of applying inscriptions:

  • Manual.
  • Diamond.
  • Laser.
  • Shtihelnaya.
  • Photo engraving.

Engraving Features

After choosing the method of applying the inscription, you need to decide on its location. These days it is possible to engrave the inside and outside of rings. The first option is considered the most popular, since the engraved phrases are intimate.

Now a little about the font type. The most unusual ring engraving designs are usually made using a monogram (AL1, FL) or decorative font (Alienware, Coventry). It is important that it is legible and that all words written by it are legible.

As for the length of the inscription, ideally it should not exceed 20 characters.

Speaking about the language of the text that will decorate the wedding accessory, the most popular are:

  • Latin;
  • English;
  • Russian;
  • French.

Don't forget about the time required for engraving. Engraving a phrase on metal is quite difficult. The work of an engraver does not like to be rushed. Therefore, this nuance is also important to consider when preparing for a wedding celebration.

Popular lettering ideas

Finally we come to beautiful examples of engraving. When choosing the text of a memorial inscription, remember that it should be concise and meaningful. You can apply to wedding rings:

  • Initials of the young.
  • An important date for the couple.
  • Favorite quote.
  • Affectionate nicknames.
  • A funny phrase.

Here are examples of phrases for engraving rings:

  • the whole world is in you;
  • you are my world;
  • I breathe only you;
  • forever together;
  • I `m nothing without you;
  • you are my happiness;
  • God joined us (connected by God);
  • I promise (I promise);
  • Semel (once and forever);
  • Cum tu aeternum (forever with you);
  • Mon Amour (my love);
  • Par Grant Amour (my greatest love);
  • Te amo (I love you);
  • Eres la luz de mi sonrisa (You are the light of my smile).

Or you can simply draw an infinity sign on the rings. This symbol has long had a sacred meaning. It is believed that it protects against bad events. And among some peoples, such a sign personifies eternity and symbolizes unlimited power.

In a situation with wedding rings, an inverted figure eight means the connection of two halves into one whole. Therefore, if you want to show the depth of your feelings and the infinity of tenderness for each other, then the infinity sign as an engraving theme will be what you need.

In conclusion, we note that choosing an engraving for rings is a responsible matter. Before going to the engraving workshop, you need to think through the order to the smallest detail.

Engraving at home. Equipment, technology, popular phrases for engraving

Engraving will help make any thing special. You can do it on cutlery and jewelry as a gift for a birthday or other holiday, on a watch, which will make it a memorable souvenir. Your personal jewelry, on which you can mark an important date, favorite phrase or life motto, is also suitable for engraving. The engraving of wedding rings deserves special attention, as it will make an important attribute of any wedding more soulful and meaningful.

Engraving equipment: how to choose?

You can make engraving at home with any sharp object. However, you will spend a lot of time on this, and the result may be far from your expectations. To do the job better, it is better to purchase the appropriate tool - an engraver. Otherwise, it is better to contact laser engraving specialists.

The engraver can work from the mains or autonomously. In addition to the engraver, you will need drills. The drills differ from each other in material and shape, because designed for different surfaces. This explains the fact that there are so many options for drills. For beginning engravers, 2 such tools will be necessary: for engraving on glass and metal.

Metal engraving: technology

Engraving is often done on metal objects: spoons, rings, locks or watches. To make metal engraving at home, take the product itself, nail polish, a mug of water (large volume), salt, cotton pads, nail polish remover, a phone charger (take one that you no longer need) and toothpick

The metal object in the place where the engraving will be located must be thickly coated with nail polish. Before the varnish dries, use a toothpick to write the inscription you want on it. Leave the surface with the inscription to dry (the varnish should dry completely). Place 2-3 tbsp in a mug (non-metallic). salt, add water and mix well.

Next, take your phone charger and cut the plug that goes directly into the phone. Bare the wires, connect “+” to the metal object on which the inscription is located, and “-” to another metal object. Place the object with the inscription connected to the wire in a glass with dissolved salt, plug in the charger.

When current is applied, a violent reaction should occur. Thanks to this reaction, the process of etching the area that is not painted over with nail polish occurs. It is necessary to expose the item to be engraved to electricity for more than 3 minutes.

When the process of applying current to the product is completed, wipe off the nail polish from the surface. This should be done using nail polish remover and a cotton pad. When the varnish is completely removed from the surface of the metal object, you will see the resulting engraving.

Engraving of wedding rings

Despite the fact that the above method is suitable for all metal products, it is better to entrust such an accessory as wedding rings to a master. This is very delicate work and requires experience. However, you will still make your contribution. It is up to you to choose the words or designs that the engraver will make on your rings. To ensure you are satisfied with the result, follow a few tips.

  1. The inscription should be short, but at the same time have a meaningful meaning. Inscriptions in Latin or English are most suitable for engraving (the words in these languages are shorter than in Russian).
  2. It is better to apply engraving after preliminary fitting of the rings to make sure that they fit you perfectly. Correcting the size can ruin the engraving.
  3. The rings themselves also need to be selected depending on what kind of engraving you want to make. For example, large texts require wide products.
  4. From the variety of fonts that can be used for engraving, it is better to choose classic ones. This will make the inscription easier to read.
  5. The easiest way to change size is engraving, done with diamond or manual methods.
  6. How to choose phrases to engrave on wedding rings?
  7. Here, of course, you can use your imagination, but there are several most commonly used phrases for engraving wedding rings.
  8. You can use your names, initials, wedding date, date of acquaintance or 1st date, kiss. If you met on the Internet, it would be appropriate to use nicknames or nicknames.

The use of artistic engraving allows you to give any item originality and make it truly unique. In addition, artistic engraving looks very stylish. In this article we will take a closer look at how to engrave on metal and what is needed for this?

5 ways to engrave metal

Modern ways of advertising your own brand (including ways to express individuality) have advanced technologies. Some of the most popular methods in this direction are the following:

  • laser sublimation;
  • laser engraving of metal;
  • sandblasting metal engraving.

Each of these methods has its own characteristics and recommendations for use in specific cases. For example, laser engraving on metal is the most versatile and easy to learn, mechanical engraving is focused on engraving plastic and metal products, but sandblasting technology is more typical for glass products. Laser sublimation allows you to make a color drawing of any complexity and, if necessary, transfer it to printing.

The best engraving specialists usually choose one technique for themselves, improving their skills in it. We will talk about how to engrave on metal, which is necessary at the initial stage, and we will analyze the features of each method.

Laser engraving

This is perhaps the most popular method of engraving on metal due to its ease of use, undemanding use of materials and low cost of equipment.

The laser beam is focused on the object (a system of lenses and mirrors is used for this), as if evaporating the processing material with its intensity. By changing the force of impact, you can even trim the object.

CO2 laser engravers, which operate using infrared radiation emitted by carbon dioxide molecules, have become very popular. The technology is widely used for engraving wooden, glass, plastic, ceramic, leather, and polymer surfaces.

But engraving on metal with such an engraver is possible only when the metal has, for example, brass enamel, anodized aluminum coating, or has another suitable type of coating.

Such engravers will not be able to process a metal product without a coating.

Carbon dioxide laser engravers are the most economical among all types of laser equipment. The price of such a tool depends on its size and power level.

Mechanical engraving

This method is also quite common. It is based on cutting a rotating sharp cutter into a metal coating. One of the varieties of this method is diamond mechanical engraving, which uses a cutter with a diamond tip. This type of engraving is often used when working with jewelry and gift souvenirs.

The advantage of this technology is its versatility, the ability to transform an engraved object in a short time and make it truly unique.

Mechanical engraving can be of two types: manual (pantograph) or computerized. The manual method is still used in engraving jewelry, metal and ceramic tableware. But, for the most part, engraving shops use computerized engravers.

This tool uses software, a control module, and a cutter motor to accurately position the cutter on the material being processed.

Depending on the dimensions of the engraving machine, it can be used both for engraving small objects (souvenirs, jewelry, personalized prizes), and used on an industrial scale with mass production.

Sandblasting

Another method of engraving on metal is based on the impact of an abrasive on the surface being processed. Most often, this material is sand, hence the name of the technology. Abrasive powder is applied under strong pressure to the surface of the material, destroying its surface structure.

This creates a matte finish on the treated area. By changing the intensity of the pressure of the sandblasting machine and the grain level of the sand (powder) itself, you can adjust the level of matting of the surface.

The use of stencils allows you to engrave the smallest details on a product: photos, pictures, company logos.

How to work as a wood engraver

Working as an engraver is a fascinating procedure with which you can create various patterns and inscriptions on the surface of the workpiece, grind and polish small parts, and also solve a whole list of other tasks. In order for the results of working as an engraver, which can be a standard drill, to be of high quality, it is necessary not only to understand why it is needed, but also to know all the nuances of using such equipment.

The engraver allows you to work not only with wood, but also with other materials

Equipment selection

When choosing an engraver or drill, you must decide for what work such a device will be used, as well as what materials will be processed with its help.

Knowing this, you can choose an engraving machine for working on metal and other materials or a drill for wood carving (even taking into account the huge variety of similar devices presented on the modern market) without any problems.

The most significant characteristics of engravers that you should pay attention to are:

  • the power of the drive motor, which determines the ability of the equipment to operate for a long time under significant mechanical loads and process various materials;
  • the number of revolutions developed by the working body in which the engraving tool is fixed.

Nowadays, there is plenty to choose from; each manufacturer produces several models of engravers that differ in both price and functionality.

Very often, those who are going to purchase an engraver for their professional activities or for work at home have to make a choice between the two characteristics mentioned above.

No matter how much one would like it, not a single modern engraving device from among serial models is capable of effectively combining high power and speed.

That is why specialists who often have to use an engraver immediately purchase both powerful and resourceful models. The best choice in such cases would be:

  • powerful engraver, the working tip of which has a reinforced design;
  • compact and lightweight micromotor capable of operating at high speeds.

For heavy work, a tool with an additional handle will be convenient, and fine engraving is best done with a compact device

For not too complicated engraving work at home, you can make such a device yourself, giving it exactly the functionality and characteristics that are necessary.

There is a wide variety of designs of homemade engravers and videos about their manufacture, so choosing an acceptable option is not difficult.

For example, you can make an engraver that will be driven by an electric motor from old household appliances.

However, to make it convenient to work with, a homemade engraving machine must be equipped with a flexible drive and a special attachment in which the tool used will be fixed.

Using a homemade engraver at home, you can not only apply inscriptions and patterns to the product, but also perform various types of processing of parts made of metal, plastic and bone.

Wood carving with a handmade engraver is also possible.

Depending on the working tool installed in the attachment of such a device, it can be used as a mini-drill, a small router, a compact grinder and polisher.

Homemade engraver with flexible shaft

To choose a serial model of an engraver that will effectively cope with all assigned tasks, you should focus not only on the rating of such equipment among specialists, but also on its characteristics and functionality.

Serial models of engravers

Serial models of engravers, which are equally successfully used both at home and in the professional sphere, can be divided into the following categories.

Technical drills

These are powerful sleeveless devices with which you can successfully perform various technological operations, namely: drilling, grinding, milling, etc.

Such units, operating at low speeds, are equipped with a convenient foot pedal and can be used in conjunction with both collet and quick-release chucks.

The power of technical drills allows them to be used for various operations with the help of additional attachments and accessories

Micromotors without flexible drive (sleeves)

The compact drive motor, which is equipped with engravers of this type, is mounted at the rear of the working attachment.

Such small and high-speed engravers, not intended for heavy loads, are used primarily for the most delicate work.

At the same time, the micromotor with which these engravers are equipped cannot be repaired; it can only be replaced with a new one.

That is why it is advisable to use these devices for not too complex work, without subjecting it to significant loads.

Engravers or drills with flexible shaft

These drills are very convenient to use for engraving and fine carving. However, it should be borne in mind that the flexible shaft with which they are equipped reduces their power by almost half.

How to work as an engraver

To make the work performed by the engraver more comfortable and efficient, certain rules should be followed.

Preparation of the workplace

The working surface on which engraving is carried out with a drill must be well lit, so it must be equipped with a powerful lamp that allows you to easily examine in great detail all the elements being processed.

If you use a paper template for engraving, you will need masking tape, with which the template is fixed to the surface to be processed. Sometimes a sketch of a design or inscription that needs to be engraved is applied to the product being processed with a regular felt-tip pen or pencil.

The surface must be degreased with alcohol.

It is convenient to store all engraving tools in one case if there is no space for setting up a full-fledged workshop

Tool preparation

Thus, a tool with a cone-shaped working part is needed to apply the outline of a design, and a cylindrical bur is needed to create small strokes.

Before starting work, all tools should be laid out on the workbench in the exact order in which they will be used.

Carrying out engraving

The hand holding the engraver's working attachment should slide freely over the surface being processed; for this, it is recommended to wear a fabric glove.

Such a glove will also allow you not to leave hand marks on the grease-free surface of the workpiece.

If you do not yet have experience in engraving, it is better to carry out the work at minimum speed.

This will allow you to cut an even pattern consisting of strokes of the same depth, without damaging the workpiece.

Engraving inscriptions using a stencil

All engraving methods assume that the outline of the design is first made, and only then its details are “drawn” with the appropriate tool.

The made drawing should be processed with a felt roller, which will give it a more neat appearance and remove all burrs left by the tool from the treated surface.

If the design of the engraver or drill you are using does not provide a forced ventilation system, then after 10–15 minutes of operation you should turn off the equipment and allow it to cool naturally.

Caring for engraving equipment and tools

In order for an engraver or drill used at home or in a well-equipped workshop to last as long as possible, it is necessary to properly care for it.

First of all, you need to monitor the condition of the tools that are used in conjunction with such equipment: there should be no cracks or other defects on their working surface.

Defective instruments may only be replaced with burs of the same design and type.

You should also make it a rule to clean the engraver's ventilation openings from dust accumulating in them after each working session.

Proper care of the engraver will not only keep such equipment in working condition for a long time, but also perform processing with its help as efficiently as possible.

DIY engraving

In order to engrave glass, it is absolutely not necessary to take it to an engraving workshop! Today we will tell you how you can make your own engraving at home.

To engrave glass with your own hands you will need:

  • actual glass
  • glass etching paste
  • glass cleaner
  • rag
  • wooden sticks
  • latex gloves
  • adhesive stencils
  • masking tape
  • clothes that you don't mind getting dirty

Step 1: Clean the glass surface thoroughly

Use glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. The surface of the glass must be perfectly clean : check that there is no dirt, dust or fingerprints left on the glass.

Step 2: Mark the top edge of the engraving with masking tape.

Masking tape limits the surface to be engraved and protects the rest of the glass. Check to see if the tape is applied in a straight line, and if so, adjust it.

If the glass is rounded (for example, like a glass), the tape does not lie smoothly and many “wrinkles” appear. Because of this, the lower border is not quite straight, which will later look somewhat sloppy.

Therefore, if necessary, use several pieces of tape, as in the photo, to make the line even.

Step 3: Apply the stencil

Another step that requires care. If you use letters, paste them as evenly as possible, keeping the same indentation from the top border and the same distance between letters. For many, this stage is the most difficult, so it’s okay if you don’t succeed the first time. Be patient and after a few tries you will succeed.

To ensure your writing is well centered, start with the letters in the middle of the word. Once you have determined the middle, it is easier to arrange the remaining letters.

Step 4: Apply masking tape around the stencil

Now you need to stick masking tape around the picture, keeping the same indentations on all sides. Don't be discouraged if the tape doesn't work for you at first! Once you get the hang of it, the process will go much easier.

Our advice: if you are doing your own engraving for the first time, start with a small area.

Step 5: Apply Glass Etching Paste

Don't forget to wear gloves! Glass etching paste is a dangerous and aggressive substance; strict safety precautions must be followed with it! Of course, the rest of the body should also be protected, ideally even the eyes: it would be best if you also wear safety glasses.

Take any stick (like an ice cream stick) and apply the paste to the surface to be engraved. The paste may contain large crystals, this is normal. They must be removed from the surface being treated, otherwise the result may worsen.

Step 6: Wait five minutes

Now the paste needs time to work. If you wash off the paste after less than five minutes, the effect may not be sufficient, but you can leave it on longer, up to ten minutes. More time will not hurt, but, as a rule, it will not bring significant improvements.

While waiting, after one and a half and three minutes, you need to lightly pat the paste and spread it again. Please note that crystals should not get into the paste, and bubbles should not be allowed to form, otherwise this will ruin the result.

Step 7: Rinse off the paste

After 5-10 minutes, you can wash off the paste with water. This should be done with gloves , or even better - with protective clothing and goggles. Under the influence of warm water, both the tape and the stencil come off easily.

After this, set the glass to dry and do not touch it for a while.

When engraving glass for the first time, start with glass that is not very valuable. Despite the fact that the process is quite simple, due to inexperience you can make mistakes that can ruin really good specimens.
