How to clean a copper RPN

Why do you need a Panchenkov nozzle?

Preparing alcoholic drinks at home is a fun but challenging process. So, if a moonshine still is used, then all components must be correctly selected, including the correct nozzle installed.

Only then can you count on receiving a quality drink. Most often, a Panchenkov nozzle is installed in the unit. It is this that improves the quality of the alcoholic drink.

In order for the result of using a filter to be satisfactory, you need to be able to select it, install it and provide the element with proper care.

Operating principle of the Panchenkov nozzle

Panchenkov's mesh attachment is a wire that is rolled into a roll. Such an element is installed on the side of the moonshine still as a kind of filter. The task is to clean alcohol vapor from harmful impurities.

When the apparatus heats up, vapors containing alcohol rise into the drawer. Here they are filtered through a Panchenkov nozzle.

As a result, fusel oils and other components characterized by a high boiling point cool, turn into liquid form and flow down the walls of the drawer back into the cube.

Alcohol vapor, in turn, purified from harmful elements, is sent to the cooler. Here they cool, take on the form of a liquid and are sent inside the receiving container, but as moonshine.

Thus, due to the regular wire nozzle, the rate of steam transfer from the pipe to the cooler is reduced, which leads to a slower rate of moonshine brewing. However, the resulting product is of better quality. For this reason, the filter is popular for home brewing.

Specifications

The Panchenkov nozzle has the following technical characteristics:

  • width – from 5 to 10 cm;
  • length – up to 100 cm;
  • weight – from 55 g;
  • wire diameter – 0.13 mm;
  • distance between threads – up to 1 mm;
  • type of weaving – zigzag;
  • permissible drawer diameter is 3-30 mm.

What materials is it made from?

The Panchenkov nozzle is made of two types of materials - copper and stainless steel. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, which you should familiarize yourself with before purchasing the item.

A copper nozzle, like SPN, is recommended to be used if grain moonshine is distilled. The fact is that sulfur is formed in the drink from this raw material. This element attracts copper. Thanks to the RPN, the grain drink turns out to be of higher quality. If you use another filter, the mash will taste like sulfur.

To produce other types of moonshine, it is recommended to use a stainless steel nozzle.

This element has the following advantages:

  • ease of cleaning;
  • low price;
  • no oxidation process, which ensures a longer operating period of the filter.

Another nozzle option is a combined one. This element is half copper and half stainless steel. However, if grain-based moonshine is made infrequently, then only a stainless steel on-load tap-changer can be used.

What is it used for in a moonshine still?

The main task is to clean moonshine from harmful impurities.

The result of using this element:

  • The alcoholic drink is of the highest quality. This result is guaranteed after the first distillation of moonshine.
  • The drink is of high strength. Moonshine is 80 degrees and stronger.
  • Copper - eliminates the taste of sulfur from the drink if grain raw materials are used to prepare the product.

Installing a nozzle in a moonshine still

This is a simple procedure that any user can easily handle. To do this, you will need an on-load tap-changer, the length of which is 30-70 cm. The exact dimensions depend on the thickness of the drawer. The element is rolled into a tube. After this, it is screwed into the drawer in a circular motion.

The element must be installed in such a way that it “sits” tightly in the pipe, but does not interfere with air circulation. Only in this case will this part perform its functions.

Cleaning the Panchenkov nozzle

How to properly clean an element will depend on what material it is made of. Thus, a stainless steel nozzle does not require special care. It is enough to rinse the element with plain water and continue to use the part for its intended purpose. The exception is accidental entry of mash into the pipe or burning. In these cases, it is recommended to wash the filter thoroughly using any cleaning agent.

Copper on-load tap changers require regular cleaning. It is recommended to carry out the procedure every time after using the moonshine still for its intended purpose. The copper filter is cleaned in a special way.

Procedure algorithm:

  • Dilute citric acid in a liter of water - 10 g;
  • place the filter in the prepared solution;
  • Boil the nozzle for 5 minutes;
  • drain the solution, then rinse the filter thoroughly with water and dry thoroughly.
  • Done - the element can be used for its intended purpose.

A regular wire nozzle is a device for a moonshine still, designed to clean the drink from harmful impurities. The device not only improves the quality of the mash, but also increases its strength. The main thing is to install the component correctly to get a positive result.

Cleaning the Panchenkov mesh with citric acid. How to prepare a moonshine still for work. Preparation of Panchenkov nozzles

Making alcoholic beverages at home is a very popular activity for many people. However, distillation requires not only special knowledge, but also equipment. Almost everyone involved in this business knows that the mash used for distillation contains harmful impurities.

You need to get rid of them, otherwise drinking a drink with these impurities can be harmful to your health. Their removal is carried out using a simple device placed in the moonshine still. In this case we are talking about the Panchenkov nozzle, which is just one of the varieties of such devices.

What is it and how does it function?

Description of the Panchenkov nozzle

In order to understand the principle of operation of this nozzle, it is necessary to first describe the cleansing procedure itself - rectification. This procedure is necessary because it allows you to remove unnecessary impurities (wood alcohol) from raw alcohol during distillation. They are harmful to humans, so taking them inside the body is unacceptable.

To purify raw alcohol, it is first poured into the cavity of the distillation cube, then the container is placed on fire (on any heat source) and brought to a certain temperature.

When the desired temperature is reached, the liquid will turn into steam, it will begin to circulate through a special distillation column, after which it will enter the cavity of the reflux condenser. Then the condensate will flow down the walls of the column and reflux condenser. It is the distillation column that is equipped with a Panchenkov nozzle.

In distillation equipment it is used together with stainless steel shavings. This element of the moonshine still purifies the final product without compromising the strength.

The Panchenkov nozzle device was invented at JSC Tupolev, it is officially patented. This wire mesh was originally intended for the purification of petroleum raw materials, which was required for its further use as fuel for aircraft.

The mesh nozzle itself is made of copper, since it is this metal that well absorbs the sulfur contained in oil, which does not return to the purified product and remains on the nozzle.

Copper is also a good conductor of heat, so it heats up and cools down quickly.

However, today the Panchenkov nozzle is actively used in light industry. Most premium-class moonshine stills are initially equipped with this mesh. It looks like rolled copper wire. It differs from the usual mesh in its special weaving, thanks to which it is conveniently located inside the device. The nozzle parameters can be adjusted independently. And since it is quite easily removed from the column, it can be taken out and cleaned if necessary.

Disadvantages of use

Many distillers do not want to use this additional filter. And although the principle of operation of the Panchenkov nozzle allows you to remove harmful impurities from the drink, because of it, the flow rate in the moonshine still is noticeably reduced. However, the majority uses it because they are ready to sacrifice distillation time, ultimately obtaining higher quality and purified alcohol.

Actually, the increase in distillation time is the only drawback that can hardly be called serious.

How it works?

It is believed that a regular Panchenkov wire nozzle is justified for. When used, the principle of operation of the apparatus does not change, but the passage of steam in the cavity is lengthened. When passing through this nozzle, alcohol vapors necessarily come into contact with the metal. At the same time, they give up their heat in the form of fusel oils, cool, condense on the walls and then return back to the mash. The alcohol continues to move towards the nozzle.

In this case, the phlegm moves to the upper layers of the container, where it again passes through this mesh and returns back. This prevents impurities from getting back into the moonshine.

This is the simple principle of operation of the Panchenkov nozzle.

Advantages

The use of this mesh allows you to expand the functionality of the moonshine still. It has certain advantages:

  1. It can be removed and installed in any other (even the simplest) moonshine still.
  2. The use of this attachment makes it possible to combine two processes at once - distillation and purification of moonshine.
  3. The nozzle is easy to clean, and if necessary, you can simply replace it with a new one.

Varieties

There are various “household” inventions that people use in the absence of the Panchenkov nozzle itself. The most popular of them is an ordinary metal sponge, which is sold in almost any household store and costs a penny.

However, before use it must be tested for corrosion resistance. This can be done as follows: first you need to cut it into fragments, wrap them in a damp cloth and sprinkle with salt.

If within two or three days the washcloth does not become rusty, then you can safely replace the Panchenkov mesh with it.

The second “analogue” is ceramic Rashig rings. It is recommended to use rough rings. Also, the mesh can be replaced by spiral-prismatic nozzles, which are no worse in efficiency than Panchenkov meshes.

Prices

These nets are sold in many stores in this area; they are not expensive, so the purchase will not put a dent in the distiller’s pocket. One such mesh costs an average of 500-700 rubles. However, the price depends on the parameters. They are included by default, which once again confirms the need for their use.

However, if you have problems finding this mesh or purchasing it, you can use an ordinary household steel sponge. Its efficiency is no lower, and it filters fusel oils just as well.

Conclusion

Now you know what the Panchenkov nozzle is, the advantages of using it, and the cost. If you are already distilling moonshine at home, then be sure to use this mesh. This simple and primitive device really helps to clean moonshine from harmful fusel oils, the entry of which into the body will certainly harm your health.

Many people like to drink alcoholic drinks, and some like to make their own. This is not just a way to save money, but an exciting creative process that brings pleasure to many men.

However, distillation is a rather complex process and requires special knowledge and equipment. In order for the moonshine to be safe for health and of high quality, it is necessary to get rid of harmful impurities in the mash. This can be done using several devices.

The Panchenkov nozzle is one of them. With its help, unnecessary impurities are eliminated during the distillation process. In this case, the result is moonshine without odor, fusel oils and without losing strength.

The article will help you understand the advantages, disadvantages, operating principles and features of the preparation and installation of the Panchenkov nozzle.

Device Description

Before considering the features of the operation of the Panchenkov mesh nozzle, it is necessary to briefly describe the procedure for purifying moonshine from impurities - rectification.

This procedure is a repeated distillation of raw alcohol, as a result of which all unnecessary impurities are removed from it, for example, wood alcohol, the use of which can be harmful to humans.

  • To purify raw alcohol, it should be poured into the cavity of the distillation cube.
  • Next, the container should be placed on a heat source, for example, a gas stove burner, and brought to a certain temperature.
  • When a certain temperature is reached, the liquid turns into steam, which circulates through the distillation column and then enters the reflux condenser cavity.
  • The condensate then flows down the walls of the distillation column and reflux condenser.
  • The column cavity itself is equipped with a Panchenkov mesh, which is combined with stainless steel shavings in distillation units.

It is this feature of the moonshine still that allows you to clean the moonshine, without compromising its strength.

The nozzle, called the Panchenkov grid, was developed by Tupolev OJSC, and the invention was patented. This wire mesh was first intended for high-quality purification of petroleum raw materials for the purpose of its further use as fuel for aircraft.

The mesh itself was made of copper, since this metal absorbs sulfur efficiently and the sulfur does not return back to the purified product. Copper also increases the rate of heating and cooling of the mesh.

Today Panchenkov meshes are actively used in light industry. They are also equipped with premium moonshine stills.

The mesh looks like a rolled copper wire with a special weave, which allows you to conveniently place the device inside the device. The grid parameters can be adjusted independently. It is also easy to clean after use.

Principle of operation

After heating in the cube of the moonshine still, alcohol-containing vapors rise into the pipe (tsar), where they come into contact not only with the walls, as in classical distillation, but also with the surface of the nozzle, giving off some of the heat to the wire.

As a result, fusel oils and other impurities with a high boiling point condense and flow back into the cube along the walls of the drawer in the form of phlegm (liquid), and alcohol vapors, purified from some of the harmful impurities, continue to move to the cooler, where they condense and enter the receiving container in the form of moonshine .

During distillation, the Panchenkov nozzle reduces the speed of steam flow in the drawer, slowing down the entire process. Compared to a conventional moonshine still, it takes more time to distill the same amount of mash, but the resulting moonshine is cleaner.

In the case of rectification, the on-load tap-changer performs the same function as any other plate or nozzle, providing a simultaneous heat and mass transfer process.

Why do you need a Panchenkov nozzle and how to work with it correctly

The Panchenkov nozzle is a mesh made of stainless steel or copper, designed to purify alcohol vapors from harmful fractions and impurities . Installed directly into the drawer (pipe between the distillation cube and the refrigerator). Designed for column-type devices (will not work with conventional distillers). Costs from 200 to 1000 rubles, depending on the material and manufacturer.

For inexperienced moonshiners, we recommend that you carefully study this information, because simply putting the nozzle into the pipe is not enough. You need to know a number of subtleties that will allow you to distill effectively and safely with this device.

Operating principle of the Panchenkov nozzle (briefly)

The mesh is installed directly into the drawer and is a kind of filter . The alcohol vapor that comes from the distillation cube passes through this nozzle and is partially condensed. Some of the harmful impurities remain on the mesh and then flow back into the cube in the form of reflux, while purer alcohol vapors move on.

It turns out that the Panchenkov nozzle partially cleanses the steam from harmful fractions, taking them on itself. It serves until the weaving begins to fall apart (from 1 to 1000 distillations).

Does this attachment make sense and how effective is it?

In our subjective opinion, the Panchenkov grid has low operating efficiency and is of little use .

Rectification is quite enough to purify moonshine from all harmful fractions, so we don’t see any point in somehow complicating the design of the column or slowing down this process due to which wire mesh.

If you have nothing else to do, you can install a grid. But it may not be delivered. That's the whole point.

The wire mesh is installed directly into the column frame.

How to properly install a Panchenkov grid in a moonshine still

There is nothing complicated about this. We take a classic mesh 30-70 cm long , depending on the thickness of the column, and twist it evenly into a tube. Then we place this tube in a circular motion quite tightly in the drawer.

It is necessary to achieve such a density that it does not move along the pipe and at the same time allows air to pass through.

A good video was prepared by the author of the HANhi , who clearly explained and showed how to use this attachment correctly. It turns out that the original name of this device is: regular Panchenkov wire nozzle (RPNP). A lot of useful information that will be useful to listen to.

Copper or stainless steel: which is better to choose?

Copper is effective only in one case - when distilling grain mash . This metal will trap sulfur particles that form in this type of mash. Due to this, cleaning will be carried out more efficiently.

In all other situations, give preference to stainless steel :

Copper, stainless steel and an alloy of these two metals.

  • Several times cheaper.
  • Easier to clean.
  • Does not oxidize.

There is also a combination nozzle, which is made of 50% stainless steel and 50% copper.

If you make grain distillates infrequently, then there will be no point in it.

How to properly clean the Panchenkov nozzle

Depending on the type of metal, the procedure will vary.

  • Stainless steel can be cleaned with ordinary running water. Wash it thoroughly under the tap, dry it and you can continue to use it.
  • Copper with . After each distillation, it is necessary to boil the nozzle in water with the addition of citric acid (10 grams per liter). After boiling for 5 minutes, rinse the device under running water and dry thoroughly.

There is no need to use mechanical methods (brushes, sponges, etc.) for cleaning. There is a high probability of spoiling the weaving, which, in turn, will negatively affect the effectiveness of the mesh.

Is it possible to use a mesh on a regular distiller with a steamer?

There is a hypothesis that the presence of a Panchenkov nozzle in a steamer will have a positive effect on the quality of moonshine. This is justified only in one case, and then with an explanation: when distilling grain mash and using a small copper mesh .

In all other cases, it is useless and there is a possibility of making everything even worse . The volume of the steam tank decreases, and this reduces the efficiency of its operation.

Regular wire Panchenkov nozzle

For experienced distillers and moonshiners, the on-load tap-changer is a familiar accessory necessary to obtain a high-quality product. But for beginners and those interested, complete information about this subject will not hurt.

The efficiency and productivity of the distillation equipment depends on the choice of filling the distillation column.

Regular nozzle Panchenkova

A wide selection of column attachments opens up many possibilities in the field of home distillation. One of the most commonly used options is RPN (regular wire attachment).

The consumable is affordable, and there are no difficulties in finding it - almost any specialized store has such a nozzle for sale.

Although there are amateurs of manual labor who make Panchenkov nozzles with their own hands, this is not practical - the time spent and the need for special tools for winding the wire do not pay off. It is much easier to buy a factory product.

The regular Panchenkov nozzle, the operating principle of which is quite simple, is nevertheless considered quite effective. Let's find out more about it.

On-load tap-changer structure

The product is a specially woven wire of small cross-section (no more than 0.13 mm), made of copper or a stainless steel alloy. The latter option is more democratic - it costs less and requires minimal maintenance. Panchenkov's copper nozzle makes it possible to obtain a higher quality product, maximally purified from impurities. The wire web is supplied in small pieces, suitable in size to fill the column pipe.

Product Specifications:

  • wire cross-section – no more than 0.13 mm;
  • distance between threads – up to 1 mm;
  • type of weaving – zigzag;
  • weight of a standard cut (100x400 mm) – 40-50 g;
  • suitable for flask diameter from 30 to 300mm;
  • production material – stainless steel or food-grade copper.

RNP is a specially woven wire of small cross-section

A specific nozzle is intended only for low-power devices that are used at home. This is also evidenced by the tolerances on the diameter of the drawer (column pipe) - no more than 30 cm.

Advantages of on-load tap-changer

There is quite a large selection of attachments - both factory and homemade, but the Panchenkov grid is one of the most common. Why? The explanation for the popularity of this device is simple - maximum benefits at an affordable cost, ease of use and maintenance.

Among the advantages of the on-load tap-changer:

  • High degree of cleaning efficiency - phlegm (alcohol-containing vapors and liquids) is well separated into its constituent fractions;
  • the possibility of significantly increasing the temperature in the finished product;
  • no difficulties to use;
  • long service life, commercial availability, low price.

Historical fact: Panchenkov’s mesh wire nozzle was developed for aviation needs at the Tupolev design bureau and was patented. Initially, it was used to purify oil for the subsequent production of fuel.

Panchenkov nozzle - operating principle

So what is the Panchenkov nozzle for and how does it work? In the still of the distillation equipment there is mash - the raw material for distillation, containing a certain amount of alcohol (the strength may vary depending on various factors).

When heated, alcohol and other substances with a low boiling point evaporate, but along with them, other components of the mash, which have a higher boiling point, undergo evaporation.

Thus, when using a conventional condenser-refrigerator, the resulting product contains a large amount of impurities.

Operating principle of the Panchenkov nozzle

Using an ordinary empty drawer slightly reduces their quantity - substances with a high boiling point condense on the walls of the flask and settle back into the cube. But to obtain high-quality, highly purified moonshine or rectified alcohol, this is not enough. Here the nozzle comes to the rescue, which becomes the filling of the distillation column.

It is not tightly located in the flask of the frame, so the vapors pass freely through the device without increasing the pressure, only slightly slowing down its speed, but increasing the contact area allows most substances with a low boiling point to be deposited back into the distillation cube.

In this case, even in one distillation cycle you can obtain homemade moonshine of a high degree of purification (the so-called under-rectified).

Panchenkov's regular nozzle is considered the second most effective (after SPN - Selivanenko's spiral wire nozzle) and the most popular among lovers of home-made alcohol and spirits.

Spiral prismatic nozzle (SPN) Selivanenko

When making alcohol at home, the rectification process is used. Installing a column with a Panchenkov nozzle makes it possible to achieve the most efficient heat and mass transfer (collision of downward reflux and rising steam). Thus, without the use of industrial equipment at home, distillers obtain real pure alcohol with a strength of up to 96-97%.

Materials for production

Today, the Panchenkov nozzle made of stainless steel is considered the most common. The reason for this is low cost and easy maintenance. Panchenkov's stainless steel mesh does not require washing every time after use; cleaning will be required if the nozzle was used in a mash column and during the distillation process foam with particles of the original raw material rose. But even then it’s enough to simply rinse the device in clean hot water or boil it.

But to obtain moonshine or better quality alcohol, sophisticated distillers choose copper on-load tap changers. Thanks to its special properties, this metal is capable of purifying vapors from sulfur compounds, which not only impart undesirable tastes and odors to the final product, but are also harmful to the body.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  How to remove rust from a car fender

Interesting fact: the first Panchenkov nozzles were made from copper. The oil contained sulfur, which reduced the quality of the fuel obtained from it.

Copper regular nozzles for columns are somewhat more expensive for home distillers, and they require special care. Cleaning a Panchenkov nozzle made of copper is more labor-intensive than a stainless steel one.

Each time after use you will need to do the following:

  1. Bring clean water to a boil in a suitable sized container.
  2. Place the nozzle there.
  3. Add 10-15 gr. citric acid.
  4. Stir so that the acid solution washes all areas of the mesh.
  5. Rinse the nozzle under the tap after cooling.

The use of copper on-load tap changers significantly increases the quality of the product, improving its organoleptic characteristics.

Drawer padding

There is nothing particularly difficult in this process - even a novice moonshiner can handle it. The mesh sizes vary - width 50-100 mm, length 400-1000 mm. There are two options for filling the drawer:

  1. fold the mesh in half, and then simply twist it from edge to edge;
  2. roll the fabric without folding.

In the latter case, the density will be slightly higher.

Tsarga with Panchenkov nozzle

Do not try to roll the mesh very tightly; this will result in high pressure in the cube by slowing down the passage of vapor through the column flask. Excessive pressure may cause an explosion.

The wad obtained after folding the mesh (professionals call it a cassette) must be carefully, slightly rotating, placed in the drawer pipe. Pulling out the nozzle is also easy - you just need to pick up the edge with your finger, tweezers or other convenient tool and pull, the cassette will easily come out of the flask.

The most important parameter for reducing sulfur compounds is the contact area of alcohol vapor and copper. This is perfectly achieved by copper RPN. Panchenkov nozzle (regular wire nozzle) - is a thin wire made of copper or stainless steel of special weaving, twisted into a roll and inserted into the drawer, distillation or mash column.

Why copper Panchenkova RPN is good for distillation.

  1. 1) Principle of operation. After heating in the cube, alcohol-containing vapors rise into the drawer, where they come into contact not only with the walls but also with the surface of the nozzle, giving off some of the heat.

    As a result, fusel oils and other impurities with a high boiling point condense and flow back into the cube along the walls of the drawer in the form of phlegm, and alcohol vapors, purified from some of the harmful impurities, continue to move to the cooler, where they condense and enter the receiving container.

  2. 2) Used in distillers and distillation columns to increase the degree of purification, allowing to obtain purer moonshine and alcohol by filtering alcohol vapors from fusel oils and various impurities.
  3. 3) Effectively absorbs alcohol vapors, filtering them. Cleans the distillate from fusel oils and sulfur impurities, giving the drink a more natural aroma.
  4. 4) Used in the distillation of any mash.
  5. 5) It is a patented scientific development of JSC Tupolev, which proves its effectiveness and reliability.
  6. 6) Easy to use. You can independently adjust the amount of filling in the moonshine still or drawer. Convenient for hygienic processing.
  7. 7) Durability, availability.

Installation and packing of a Panchenkov copper nozzle into the drawer.

Tsar 1.5 inches Tsar 2 inches
Length of copper on-load tap-changer 50 cm. 100cm.
  1. 1) The length and density of packing depends on the design of the apparatus or column.
  2. 2) Method 1: fold the mesh in half, then roll it into a tube (wad). We insert it into the drawer, turning it slightly.
  3. 3) Method 2: roll the RPN into a tube from one edge to the other without folding it in half. Conclusion : with the second method, the density will be higher than with the first.
  4. 4) To remove it from the drawer, you need to pick up the RPN, for example, with a knitting needle and smoothly pull it towards you.

Cleaning the Panchenkov copper nozzle.

Copper regular wire attachments should be cleaned regularly, preferably after each use.

  1. 1 ) Hot stillage : for quick and effective cleaning of the copper tap-changer, you need to dip it in hot stillage (the remaining liquid in the cube after distillation) for 10-15 minutes. For greater effect, the stillage can be boiled directly in the cube.
  2. 2) Citric acid : a) dissolve 25 g of citric acid in a liter of boiling water, rub all oxidized parts with this solution, wait 20-30 minutes and rinse with running water. A regular brush will help speed up the cleaning process; it is convenient to rub in the solution and remove hardened salts. b) If you first boil it in lemon juice, the effect will not be the same as if you first simply rinse it with fairies to wash off the fat, and then boil it. There is a lot of fat, it prevents the lemon from penetrating properly.
  3. 3) Copper in our conditions produces sulfide (black dense coating) and various copper salts + organic acids (maybe a fatty black-green mass). Which cannot be removed by boiling with lemon. The oxide film can be very resistant. Then this method will help - put the nozzle in a plastic jar, add citric acid and washed sand. Put it in the trunk for 2-3 days and while you drive around the city, the abrasive and acid will do their job. Can you put a plastic jar in the washing machine?

The on-load tap-changer is copper or stainless steel, which is better.

  1. 1) For grain mashes and fruit mashes it’s definitely copper, for sugar mashes it’s a choice. But copper will not degrade the quality.
  2. 2) Copper is a softer material than stainless steel, so a larger amount can be compacted into the drawer; the most important parameter for reducing sulfur compounds is the contact area of alcohol vapor and copper.
  3. 3) Stainless steel is simpler and more convenient in terms of availability and maintenance.

    Copper requires care and cleaning of its surface from everything that stainless steel allows into the distillate without hindrance. This applies only to distillation and then, to a greater extent, when distilling mash into raw alcohol. Copper is a chemical filter, but it needs to be cleaned constantly, and as always, we are too lazy.

  4. 4) For distillates, copper RPN. For rectifications, stainless steel.

How to clean Panchenkov copper mesh

To purify moonshine from harmful impurities and at the same time strengthen the final product, drawers or reinforcing columns are used.

For additional selection of fusel oils and other chemical compounds, a Panchenkov nozzle is used, which is a spiral-weave mesh of thin stainless or copper wires.

This mesh is rolled into a roll and inserted into the drawer, trying to ensure that it is of sufficient density to cover the entire internal space of the column, but at the same time allows vapor to freely pass upward to the refrigerator. Among distillers, this product is called SPN (spiral-prismatic nozzle).

What is it used for in a moonshine still?

A hollow film column can also cope with more or less high-quality purification of moonshine from harmful impurities. But for this, its height must be 1 meter or more, which is extremely inconvenient, especially if a distillation cube with such a “superstructure” needs to be placed on a stove in an ordinary kitchen. That's why nozzles are used.

Using a moonshine still with a drawer and attachments, you can:

  • get high-quality moonshine free of fusel oils from the first distillation;
  • “squeeze” maximum strength from the mash. In this way, it is possible to obtain raw alcohol of 80° and higher strength;
  • using copper SPNs, distill moonshine that is ideal in purity from grain raw materials, without the taste of sulfur, which is clearly felt during direct distillation.

How to make copper mesh with your own hands?

The Panchenkov nozzle has a complex weave and it is unrealistic to reproduce it at home. But you can make your own analogue of SPN from copper wire, which will ideally work on cleaning grain mash not only from fusel oils, but also from sulfur, which is certainly present in wort made from grain.

You will need:

  • braided copper wire with a cross-section of 1 - 1.5 mm - 9 meters of three-core cable. If you take the wire, then 25 - 27 meters based on a drawer with a height of 45 - 46 cm;
  • a 3 mm electrode from which the coating has been cleared (only the metal rod remains);
  • side cutters and pliers;
  • fine sandpaper;
  • drill with adjustable speed.

Operating procedure:

  1. We remove the insulation from the copper wire.
  2. We clean each wire with sandpaper.
  3. We clamp the core of the welding electrode into the drill chuck.
  4. We insert the tip of the copper wire into the gap between the clamps of the drill and begin to wind it evenly and tightly (turn to turn) onto the electrode at the lowest speed.
  5. We remove the spiral column and cut it using side cutters into pieces of 3 - 4 mm.
  6. After cutting, use pliers to press the edges of the spirals together so that they do not stick together in the future.
  7. If your drawer previously contained stainless steel Panchenkov nozzles rolled into rolls, they need to be pushed out. A stick is used for this.
  8. Then we insert one nozzle from the bottom of the column - it will serve as a holder for copper spirals, otherwise they will fall out into the cube.
  9. We fill the rest of the column space with copper springs we made.

Note. For high-quality cleaning and at the same time strengthening the moonshine, it is necessary to fill the drawer to at least 2/3 of the height. If suddenly there aren’t enough springs, make more.

Cleaning and rinsing

Panchenkov stainless steel nozzles are enough to be removed from the column from time to time (even not after each run), unrolled and washed under the tap. Then roll it up again and insert it into the washed drawer.

It is a little more difficult with industrially made copper nozzles, as well as with homemade spirals. They are prone to strong absorption of fusel odors, and also to blackening in an aggressive environment containing methyl, acetone, various acids and fusel oils.

This is what enters our body along with unrefined moonshine. Therefore, they need to be put in order after each haul. Fortunately, cleaning them is not that difficult. We take:

  • 2 liters of boiling water;
  • 20 g citric acid.

We dilute the acid in boiling water, using a whole, unchipped enamel or stainless steel pan.

We take out the nozzles (carefully shake out the spirals from the drawer, push out the twisted nozzles) and lower them into a hot solution of citric acid in the hope that it will completely cover them.

Place on fire and boil for 2-3 minutes. During this time, the spirals literally before our eyes return to their former shining appearance, the blackness disappears.

After boiling, rinse several times with clean water. We twist the nozzles tightly and fill the column pipe, fill the spirals in the order already described.

Panchenkov nozzle: operating principle of the RPN, why you need a mesh on a moonshine still, how to make a copper nozzle with your own hands

Today, many connoisseurs of alcoholic beverages prefer to create an alcoholic product at home. One of the reasons is that homemade alcohol is of higher quality, stronger and purer than some of its analogues available in stores.

However, to obtain the desired result, special equipment, skills and knowledge are required. To ensure that the drink does not have a strong odor and does not contain harmful impurities (fusel oils), experienced moonshiners use various devices and additions to the apparatus. The latter includes the Panchenkov nozzle (regular wire nozzle).

What is a Panchenkov nozzle

A regular wire nozzle or Panchenkov mesh is a patented scientific work of Tupolev OJSC, which appeared in 1981. Initially, the on-load tap-changer was manufactured for technical purposes and for the purification of petroleum feedstock.

Panchenkov's on-load tap-changer consists of copper and is characterized by high thermal conductivity and high-quality absorption. Therefore, later it found its application in the production of alcoholic beverages. Nowadays, among users of distillation columns, the mesh is considered the easiest to use and the best in terms of purification (after Selivanenko’s spiral-prismatic nozzle).

The nozzle is a wire rolled into a wad. The weaving of the on-load tap-changer allows you to place it in the moonshine device so that during the process of preparing the product you can independently set the necessary parameters. In addition, the roll is easily removed from the column and cleaned for reuse.

Copper reduces the heating and cooling time of the nozzle, and also absorbs sulfur and prevents it from entering the purified alcoholic beverage.

Technical characteristics of the Panchenkov mesh:

  • weight - from 45 to 55 g with a width of 10 cm and a length of 40 cm;
  • weaving - zigzag or spiral;
  • thread thickness - 0.13 mm;
  • distance between threads - less than 1 mm;
  • The inner diameter of the drawer, recommended for use, is 35 cm.

This addition to the moonshine still allows you to expand its functionality. Using a grid allows you to:

  • combine distillation and purification of an alcoholic product;
  • reduce the time needed to clean moonshine;
  • obtain the highest quality product without impurities;
  • create a flow of the required power by adjusting the location of the on-load tap-changer;
  • extend the life of the device.

Among the disadvantages of the Panchenkov nozzle, moonshiners note an increase in the time for distilling alcohol, which is associated with the purification process.

How the device works

During the process of preparing an alcoholic beverage, the boiling point inside the moonshine still increases and vapor moves into the drawer.

The latter settle on the pipe and interact with the Panchenkov nozzle, giving it some of the heat. As a result, phlegm (liquid with harmful impurities at elevated temperatures) is produced, which flows back into the cube. In addition, purified alcohol-containing vapors are formed. When placed in the refrigerator, they condense and transform into moonshine.

Thus, the copper mesh for the moonshine still functions as a heat and mass exchanger, just like other devices in the form of washcloths or plates.

When using a Panchenkov nozzle, the operating principle of the device changes somewhat, since the speed of production and movement of steam in the pipe decreases and the moonshine process slows down. However, users do not consider this nuance to be a major disadvantage.

Practical use

The Favorit moonshine device is equipped with a regular Panchenkov nozzle. The operating principle of the device allows you to avoid the need for repeated distillation or rectification, and also ensures the formation of a high-quality alcoholic drink.

When using a film-type mash column, moonshiners receive a pure product with a strength of up to 94% of revolutions.

The Panchenkov grid is also used in other distillation columns, which are constantly modified, reduced or increased in size. But it should be remembered that regular attachment is effective only if the length of the drawer is 35 cm or more.

How to make a mesh for a moonshine still with your own hands

Some users of moonshine stills make the Panchenkov on-load tap-changer with their own hands. However, in practice, such an activity turns out to be economically unprofitable.

Creating a mesh for a moonshine still requires special means for winding and compliance with generally accepted rules and tolerances.

Moonshiners are advised to purchase a ready-made mesh or use washcloths made of stainless material.

How to install and clean the tap changer

Before installation, it is necessary to determine the size of the on-load tap-changer, which depends on the diameter of the distillation column pipe.

So, for a 30 mm drawer, a mesh with a diameter of 15 cm is required. If the diameter of the pipe is 60 mm, then the length of the nozzle should be 100 cm.

A wad should be created from a mesh of a given length. There are different ways to do this:

  1. The nozzle is completely rolled into a spiral into a tight roll, from edge to edge. At the same time, make sure that no gap is formed in the middle of the wad.
  2. The mesh is folded in half, and then, starting from the point of inflection, a wad is formed.

The finished roll is inserted into the pipe to operate the moonshine device. In order to get the nozzle, you need to pick it up with your fingertip or tweezers.

Removing the Panchenkov on-load tap-changer is required to clean its surface, since a silver or black coating forms during the preparation of an alcoholic beverage. Heavy contamination impairs the functionality of the nozzle and the quality of the moonshine.

To clean the mesh you need to follow simple steps:

  1. Fill the on-load tap-changer with water and put it on the fire to boil.
  2. Add citric acid (10 g per 1 liter of water) to the boiling liquid.
  3. Mix the contents thoroughly.
  4. Drain the water and rinse the mesh under running water.

If after washing the nozzle has acquired a copper color, it means it is ready for reuse. The service life of the mesh is determined by the frequency of its use and cleaning, the quality of the raw materials and the acidity level of the moonshine.

The principle of operation of the Panchenkov nozzle (RPN) in a moonshine still, care and cleaning

Today we’ll talk about the operating principle of this nozzle, its application, the pros and cons of using it in a moonshine still.

How does the Panchenkov nozzle work?

The Panchenkov nozzle or, as it is called, RPN, looks like a sheet of intertwined steel or copper fibers, which are then rolled into rolls and inserted into the frame of the apparatus column.

When alcohol vapor enters the drawer, it comes into contact with the nozzle, transferring some of its heat to it. As a result, volatile impurities, the boiling point of which is higher than that of alcohol vapor, condense on the walls and flow down. And pure vapors rush further.

Copper and steel nozzles perform the same task - purifying alcohol vapors and increasing the strength of the resulting raw materials. But they are still used in different situations.

It's a matter of the type of raw material being distilled. When distilling grain and fruit mashes, copper attachments are usually used. In addition to strengthening the distillate and purifying alcohol vapors, they perfectly precipitate sulfur compounds formed during the distillation process.

When distilling sugar mash, sulfur compounds are not formed, so there is no point in using expensive copper nozzles. A cheaper stainless steel nozzle will do the job of cleaning and strengthening.

It is important to know! The Panchenkov nozzle works effectively only if it is irrigated. Irrigation occurs due to a reflux condenser located higher in the column. It is not practical to use reinforcement attachments in a column without a good reflux condenser.

Advantages of the Panchenkov nozzle

  1. High level of purification from impurities at the initial stage of distillation.
  2. Increasing the strength of the drink.
  3. Cheap, accessible.
  4. Easy to use and clean.

Disadvantages of the Panchenkov nozzle

  1. Distillation speed decreases

How to install Panchenkov nozzles correctly

There are 2 ways to install Panchenkov nozzles in a column. The first is to fold the nozzle in half, then roll it up and “screw” it into the drawer. The second option is to roll the nozzle into a roll without first folding it in half. In this case, the density of the nozzle will be slightly higher.

When installing attachments, it is important not to overdo it with twist density. Tightly rolled rolls can clog the column, which will lead to unpredictable consequences, including the explosion of the distillation cube.

To get the nozzle after distillation, just pick up its edge with tweezers and pull it towards you. If you use several pieces in series, you can link them together. It will be easier to remove.

Care and cleaning

Caring for the attachments is as easy as installing them. After distillation you must:

  1. Place the nozzles in a solution of water and citric acid and boil for 15 minutes.
  2. Remove the nozzles and rinse again with clean water.

After these simple procedures, the regular Panchenkov wire nozzle will be completely ready for the next use.

In general, we can say that nozzles can and should be used in column-type devices. The quality and strength of the drink really become higher.

If you are interested in obtaining strong and pure homemade alcohol, we recommend purchasing a regular Panchenkov nozzle for your device. You can do this on our website.

Panchenkov nozzle: principles of operation, installation and cleaning

Currently, the production of homemade alcohol is increasingly gaining popularity. And in order to obtain a high-quality product, you need not only certain knowledge and a good moonshine still, but also some additional devices with which you can significantly improve the quality of the product. Panchenkov's regular wire attachment is one such device.

The advantages of using the Panchenkov nozzle are as follows:

  • the purification of moonshine from harmful impurities during the distillation process is improved;
  • the strength of moonshine increases;
  • The on-load tap-changer has a low cost;
  • characterized by ease of maintenance.

Historical reference

The Panchenkov nozzle was developed and patented in 1981 by the legendary Tupolev Design Bureau for the purpose of more detailed purification of petroleum products in the production of aviation fuel. Previously, only copper wire was used in the design, which has high thermal conductivity and perfectly absorbs sulfur in petroleum products.

Later, the on-load tap-changer began to be used for the production and purification of home-made moonshine, installing it in a drawer or a special chamber of a moonshine still, for example, like Finland Extra.

Installation and cleaning of the Panchenkov nozzle

If we talk about installing this device in a distillation apparatus, then the nozzle must be folded in half, then rolled into a tight roll, which is carefully screwed into the drawer. To improve the quality of the final product, it is recommended to use several rolls of on-load tap changers, inserting them into the drawer one after another.

Recommended length of one piece of mesh for rolling:

  • For a drawer with a diameter of 1.5 inches - 30-35 cm;
  • For a drawer with a diameter of 2 inches - 50 cm.

Important! The nozzle is not rolled very tightly, since a roll that is too tight can plug the column, and when distilling the mash, the device can simply explode.

Removing the device is very simple - carefully grab the edge of the nozzle with tweezers and pull it out.

As you can see, installing and removing the nozzle is very simple, as for care and cleaning, it will also not be difficult, for this you need:

  • Place the used nozzle in water and bring to a boil;
  • add citric acid (10 g per liter of water);
  • rinse in clean running water;
  • dry - the on-load tap-changer is ready for reuse.

Moonshine brewing is a complex process in which it is necessary to take into account various nuances in order to obtain a high-quality drink. Experienced distillers believe that if during distillation it is possible to increase the purity, quality and strength of moonshine, then any available devices should be used, and Panchenkov’s on-load tap-changer is no exception.
