How much does a stainless steel sheet weigh?

How to determine the weight of stainless steel: calculation method

The use of stainless steel is very common today in many industries. Among them are the construction of buildings, both industrial and residential. Automotive, aircraft and shipbuilding also cannot do without the use of this metal. The price of steel sheets and pipes on sale is always indicated per kilogram.

How to determine thickness?

When carrying out construction work, it is necessary to calculate the weight not only in order to purchase the required amount of material, but also to determine what the load on the support will be.

The specific gravity of stainless steel is the main characteristic of the metal, allowing the necessary calculations to be made. Knowing this parameter, you can use special calculators and programs to determine the mass of the material. The specific density of steel ranges from 7700 to 7900 kg/m3.

Calculate the mass of the pipe

Let's consider how you can independently calculate the weight of a stainless steel pipe. To correctly determine the amount of material for work, the following values must be taken into account:

  • length;
  • diameter;
  • thickness;
  • specific gravity.

Using the tables, you can select the required ratio of pipe length and diameter. You can calculate the mass of a product by multiplying its volume by its density. Accordingly, to calculate the volume, you need to multiply the value equal to the wall thickness by the surface area. In this case, the area is determined as the product of pi, the length of the pipe and its diameter.

For example, if you need to determine how much a 12x18n10t steel pipe weighs, the length of which is 10 m, the diameter is 10 cm, and the wall thickness is 1 mm, the calculation procedure will be as follows:

  • the specific density value of 7900 is multiplied by the diameter: 7900*0.1=790;
  • multiply by the length and thickness of the wall: 790*10*0.001=7.9;
  • multiply by a constant value of “pi”: 7.9 * 3.14 = 24.81 (kg).

However, these calculations may not be very accurate. This is determined by the round surface of the pipe.

You can also use another formula; it is a more simplified version and is used to calculate the linear meter of the product.

To determine the mass, you need to subtract the wall thickness from the value that determines the diameter of the product. The resulting value is multiplied by the wall thickness and the value 0.025. In general, the formula looks like this:

1 p.m.= (D-T)*T*0.025

Then a linear meter of the same pipe will weigh 2.475 kg. Although the difference in the numbers obtained is negligible, you should purchase slightly more material than calculated to account for cutting and processing costs.

Sheet material

It should also be taken into account that stainless steel includes a large group of grades of this metal. The most common brands are: 12x18N10T, 08x18N10, and also 12x18N12T. Foreign analogues are also popular, including Aisi 321, Aisi 304 and Aisi 430. All these brands are characterized by a high degree of corrosion resistance, ease of processing, and high strength.

The material can be thin-sheet or thick-sheet depending on the type of rolled product. Thin-sheet products are those having a thickness of 0.5-5 mm. For thick sheets, this number is 5-50 mm.

The most common sheet sizes are 1000x2000 mm, 1250x2500 mm, 1500x3000 mm. The weight of a stainless steel sheet is somewhat easier to calculate than the weight of a pipe.

To calculate the weight of a stainless steel sheet, you need to multiply the height, thickness and width. In general, the required amount of material can be calculated by multiplying the mass of one sheet by the required number of sheets.

For example, the weight of stainless steel 12x18n10t for a sheet measuring 0.5x1000x2000 mm will be about 8 kg. A sheet of the same size, but with a thickness of 1 mm, will already weigh 16 kg.

To determine the mass of sheets, you can use special theoretical tables or a calculator.

Railings and fences

Due to its properties and attractive appearance, stainless steel is often used to create stair railings and fences. Often, products made from this metal are used by designers and architects as decorative elements. It is necessary to know the weight of structures when transporting products in order to calculate the expected load on the base of the railing. Knowing the above formulas, the calculation process is greatly simplified.

For example, the average weight of fences or stair railings will be approximately 5-6 kg. If the presence of glass sheet is assumed in the design of the fences, the weight will exceed 20 kg. When planning the transportation of parts, you should consider not only how much they will weigh, but also the length of the products. In the photo you can see examples of the use of this metal.

How much does a stainless steel sheet weigh: depending on the brand and size

“Stainless steel” is a broad group of grades united by their resistance to corrosion. They differ in their properties and performance characteristics. Knowing these parameters, you can find out how much a stainless steel sheet, pipe, circle or rod weighs. The weight of the structure, along with the basic mechanical and chemical properties, can be a decisive factor in the choice of material.

How to calculate the weight of a stainless steel product

Sheet metal products are classified according to two main characteristics: microstructure and chemical composition. The specific gravity of the material, which determines the mass of the entire product, depends on them. Technical reference books provide detailed tables of specific gravities, from the simplest (200 and 300) grades to highly alloyed ones. The thickness and type of surface are also selected at the design stage. Thus, smooth rolls of 0.4-2 mm are used for roofing and facade cladding.

Cutting stainless steel to ordered sizes is carried out at enterprises equipped with specialized equipment.

To calculate how much a sheet of stainless steel of a particular grade weighs, you need to multiply its volume (the product of length times width times thickness) by its specific gravity. This parameter is very important for architects.

Most often they use the universal, inexpensive grade AISI 304, which has good mechanical characteristics at low temperatures, weldability, strength, and heat resistance.

Types of sheet metal

Hot-rolled and cold-rolled stainless steel is supplied in rolls or sheets in accordance with GOST standards. Enterprises offer to order stainless steel of any brand and type of surface (polished, mirror, matte, decorative). The thickness of the material and its class determine the scope of use and weight.

The use of austenitic class metal is due to its heat resistance (up to 600°C) and immunity to aggressive environments. 10 mm rolls are in demand in shipbuilding and the chemical industry.

For the production of combustion chambers and boiler mounts, high-alloy thick sheets (up to 20 mm), heat-resistant and heat-resistant are used. When placing an order, the company’s specialists calculate how much a stainless steel sheet weighs.

Thin-sheet steel is divided according to quality into soft, heat-treated, and cold-worked. All factors together determine the price of a product.

Wave slate sheet sizes

Slate is the most common roofing material, a leader in its field of application for several decades.

The name “slate” is not entirely correct; real slate is a natural layered mineral.

The exact designation of the roofing material sounds like asbestos-cement sheet, but the name “slate” has stuck for a long time and there is no point in changing it.

There are two main types of material available : flat and wave. Flat is used for facing work or for the construction of partitions for auxiliary and utility rooms.

Only wave roofing is used as a roof covering ; it is stronger and stronger than flat roofing due to the stiffening ribs created by the waves.

The long-term widespread use of slate is a consequence of high reliability, durability and ease of installation. The relatively recent appearance on the market of many alternative roofing coverings made of synthetic materials, metal or bitumen, has not been able to radically change the situation, since the traditional, time-tested approach to materials prevails among builders.

Technical characteristics of wave slate

Wave slate is a roofing material in the form of wavy sheets of rectangular shape. To produce slate, a plastic molding composition is used, the components of which are:

  1. Portland cement. The grades used are M300-500, the percentage of material present is 80-90%.
  2. Chrysotile asbestos. (10-20%).
  3. Water.

Traditionally, the material is produced in a light gray natural color , but recently coating samples made with additives of dyes to give a certain color have appeared on the market, which has significantly improved the aesthetic perception of the material.

Installation is carried out by attaching overlapping sheets using slate nails to the rafter system. Ridges and connecting elements that make up the roof covering are also produced by industry, but often builders do not know about this and use metal elements, which worsens the appearance of the roof.

Wave slate sheet sizes (7 and 8 waves)

According to GOST, there are only two standard sizes:

  1. 40/150 — wave height 40 mm, wave length — 150 mm.
  2. 54/200 — wave height 54 mm, wave length — 200 mm.

The dimensions of 8-wave slate also vary depending on the type. By profile type, sheets are divided:

Unified

Marked with the abbreviation UV.

Slate 8 wave sheet size:

  • Sheet width - 1130 mm;
  • Length - 1750 mm;
  • Sheet thickness is 5.8 mm for profile 40/150 and 6-7.5 mm for profile 54/200.

Slate size 7 wave:

  • Sheet width - 980 mm;
  • Length - 1750 mm;
  • Sheet thickness is 5.8 mm for profile 40/150 and 6-7.5 mm for profile 54/200.

Slate size 6 wave:

  • Sheet width - 1125 mm;
  • Length - 1750 mm;
  • Sheet thickness is 5.8 mm for profile 40/150 and 6-7.5 mm for profile 54/200.

Wave slate size

Ordinary

Denoted as VO.

  • Sheets 680 mm wide;
  • length - 1120 mm;
  • sheet thickness 5.8 mm for profile 40/150 and 6-7.5 for profile 54/200.

The size of 8 wave slate can vary within small limits.

Reinforced

The profile marked VU is intended for industrial purposes, has an increased thickness - 8 mm , sheet width 1000 mm, length - up to 2800 mm.

The maximum permissible dimensional deviations are ±15 mm in length and +10 and -5 mm in width.

Number of waves

The number of waves is already determined by the name - 7-wave and 8-wave.

In individual construction, a 7-wave sheet is most often used, since it is lighter and easier to lift to the installation site manually.

At the same time, its useful area is smaller than that of an 8-wave one , since the amount of overlap for both brands is the same and the difference of one wave is not compensated for by anything.

However, a study of demand shows the predominant use of the 7-wave option.

How much does a slate roof weigh?

The weight of the sheet is an important indicator on which the load on the rafter system depends. So, let's find out how much a sheet of 8-wave and 7-wave slate weighs.

The weight of the 40/150 profile sheet is:

  • 23.2 kg - weight of 7 wave slate;
  • 26.1 kg - weight of 8 wave slate.

For profile 54/200, the weight is 26 and 35 kg, respectively.

The weight of 8 wave slate 1 m2 is approximately 10.41 kilograms.

It is noted that the weight of slate is greater than that of its competitors among roofing materials, which creates certain requirements for the design of the rafter system. Wind and snow loads should also be taken into account ; with a large roof area, the weight of water absorbed by the coating during rain can play a role.

Weight of corrugated slate

Effective area

The sheets are installed with an overlap, 1 or less often 2 waves are overlapped. In this case, the useful area of the sheet is reduced by the amount of overlap.

  • For a 7-wave sheet, the usable area is 1.336 square meters. m .;
  • wave slate is 1.57 sq.m.

The dimensions are indicated with an overlap of 1 wave, which is most often used in construction. Sometimes in some places it may be tempting to lay the sheet end-to-end to save material.

Saving one or two sheets will result in water entering the room.

Advantages and disadvantages of slate covering

Wave slate has a number of undeniable advantages:

  • Long service life. On average, the coating retains its quality for about 40 years or more, depending on the conditions of use. It is noted that even under the most unfavorable factors, the coating lasts at least 10 years.
  • Easy to install . The work does not require high qualifications; it is enough to have a general understanding of installation techniques.
  • Allows partial repair or replacement of individual sheets that have become unusable.
  • The strength of the material contributes to safety during installation - the slate covering can easily support the weight of a person and allows walking on the covering.
  • Does not accumulate electric charge , absolutely safe in terms of fire.
  • Much cheaper than other roofing materials.
  • The relatively light weight of the coating allows you to do without construction lifting equipment during installation.

It is impossible not to mention the negative qualities of slate. These include:

  • Fragility of the material . Slate is not plastic and does not allow any deformation.
  • The ability to absorb moisture shortens the service life and causes the formation of fungus, mold, and over time moss appears, which must be cleaned off. This deficiency can be neutralized by coloring.
  • asbestos as a component of the material is a significant health hazard.

This is the main reason for the displacement of slate from the market, although there are no definite medical statistics on this matter. There is data for enterprises showing the percentage of morbidity among workers, but there is no statistical information for residents of slate-covered houses.

Nevertheless, the danger exists and must be taken into account. Installation work should be carried out using personal respiratory protection.

Material deficiencies can be neutralized without any particular difficulties, you just need to be aware of them and take appropriate measures to prevent possible incidents. At the same time, the obvious advantages, tested and confirmed by many years of practice, convincingly speak in favor of slate as an advantageous and reliable roofing covering.

Stainless (corrosion-resistant) steels are alloys based on iron and carbon, containing, in addition to the main components and standard impurities, alloying elements.

The main additive is chromium (Cr), which in a corrosion-resistant alloy must be at least 10.5%. At this level, Cr has a significant effect on the iron-carbon phase diagram.

Chromium and nickel, also in most cases present in stainless steels, increase not only the metal’s resistance to corrosion, but also other technical characteristics.

Rules for marking corrosion-resistant steels

The designation consists of numbers and letters. The two-digit number at the beginning of the marking is the amount of carbon in hundredths of a percent. The following are letters characterizing certain alloying elements.

After them are placed numbers equal to the percentage of alloying elements, rounded to the nearest whole number. If the percentage of the additive is in the range of 1-1.5, then the number is not placed after the letter.

To symbolize alloying components in Russian regulatory documentation, the Russian alphabet is used:

  • X – chromium;
  • N – nickel;
  • T – titanium;
  • B – tungsten;
  • G – manganese;
  • D – copper;
  • M – molybdenum.

Groups of corrosion-resistant steels by structure

The structure of corrosion-resistant steels, their properties and areas of application are determined by the percentage of carbon, the list and amount of alloying additives. Based on its structure, stainless steel is divided into several types. Main: ferritic, martensitic, austenitic. There are intermediate options.

Ferritic

This group refers to low-carbon alloys - C up to 0.15%. chromium – up to 30%. The bulk crystalline structure provides a combination of fairly high strength and ductility. Stainless steels of ferritic grades are classified as ferromagnetic.

Main characteristics:

  • ability to cold deformation;
  • the main type of heat treatment is annealing, which removes hardening;
  • good corrosion resistance;
  • relatively low cost.

The main reason for the loss of performance characteristics of ferritic steels is intergranular corrosion (ICC), as a result of which destruction occurs along grain boundaries.

To eliminate this negative phenomenon, sharp cooling of the metal from +800°C is avoided, stabilizing annealing is carried out, and an optimal balance is found between the carbon and chromium content.

The introduction of carbide-forming elements—titanium and niobium—can completely eliminate the tendency to MCC.

According to the AISI standard, ferritic steels belong to the 400 series:

  • 403-420 – chromium content 11-14%, no nickel;
  • 430 and 440 – 15-18% C, no nickel;
  • 630 – contains 3-5% nickel. It is well processed, resistant to corrosion in various environments, similar in properties to 08Х18Н10.

These materials are used in the production of a wide range of pipes, sheets, and profiles.

Table of grades of ferritic stainless steel according to GOST and AISI, main areas of use

Brand according to GOST 5632 AISI brand Areas of use
08Х13 409 Cutlery
12Х13 410 Containers for liquid alcohol-containing products
12Х17 430 Containers for high-temperature processing of food products

Martensitic

This group includes metals with a chromium content of up to 17%, carbon - up to 0.5% (in some cases - higher). Martensite is a structure obtained by hardening a workpiece and then tempering it. It is characterized by a combination of high hardness, strength, elasticity and corrosion resistance.

Alloys are used in the production of critical metal products intended for use in aggressive environments. These are springs, shafts, knives, flanges. As the C content increases, a carbide phase appears in the structure, providing high hardness and wear resistance.

Carrying out low tempering after hardening (+200+300°C) provides high hardness - 50-52 HRC, high tempering (+500+600°C) - lower hardness (28-30HRC) and higher viscosity. Hardening is carried out at temperatures +950+1050°C.

Table of martensitic steel grades according to GOST and AISI, their main areas of application

Brand according to GOST 5632 AISI brand Areas of use
20Х13 420 Kitchen equipment
30Х13
40Х13
14Х17Н2 (martensitic-ferritic) 431 Compressor unit parts, equipment operated in aggressive environments and at low temperatures

Austenitic class

This broad class of corrosion-resistant steels (according to AISI - class 300 and a representative of class 200 - AISI 201) has high corrosion resistance, ductility in cold and hot states, strength, good weldability, and the ability to contact without destruction with nitric acid.

Non-magneticity significantly expands the range of applications of the material. A combination of 18% Cr and 8% Ni is economically advantageous. If it is necessary to obtain a stable state of austenite, the amount of nickel is increased to 9%. Such steels can be unstabilized and stabilized.

The stabilized group is alloyed with titanium and niobium, which reduce the susceptibility of austenitic grades to intergranular corrosion.

Hardening is carried out at temperatures of +1050+1100°C with rapid cooling, which fixes the state of the saturated solid solution. The peculiarity of this group is the absence of hardening during hardening.

In this case, this type of maintenance is a mitigating operation aimed at relieving the effects of hardening. Annealing can be used for the same purpose. Small parts are subjected to hardening, massive ones are annealed.

Table of austenitic steel grades according to GOST and AISI, their main areas of application

Brand according to GOST 5632 AISI brand Areas of use
12Х18Н10Т 321 Technological lines of the chemical industry and oil refining enterprises
08Х18Н10 304 Technological piping systems in the chemical and food industries, limited range of cookware, not including products for hot food processing
08Х17Н13М2 316 Technological equipment for the chemical industry, use as a “food” material
12X15G9ND 201 Tanks and pipelines in contact with organic acids and moderately aggressive media

Brief characteristics of some types of austenitic stainless steels:

  • 304 is a common representative of this class. It lends itself perfectly to deep drawing, so it is used for the manufacture of three-dimensional products. Susceptible to crevice corrosion in warm environments with high chlorine content, therefore not recommended for use in seawater or in industries that use chlorine cleaning compounds.
  • 321 and 347 are improved versions of grade 304, differing in the addition of niobium or titanium.
  • 316 – exhibits maximum corrosion resistance among commonly used corrosion-resistant steels.
  • 201 is a relatively inexpensive analogue of steels 304 and 321. It shows good performance in medium-aggressive environments, thanks to its balanced chemical composition and new manufacturing technologies.

Stainless steel AISI 409, characteristics, analogues

AISI 409 stainless steel is a general-purpose chromium alloy with increased heat resistance. The letter marking of the material indicates the developer - the American Iron and Steel Institute, number 4 - ferritic crystal structure, the remaining numbers - the serial number in the series.

Chemical composition and analogues of AISI 409 steel

The properties and scope of application of various grades of stainless steel depend on the ratio of alloying elements. Chemical composition of AISI 409 steel in % according to ASTM A240:

  • iron (Fe) up to 84;
  • chromium (Cr) 12-14;
  • nickel (Ni) up to 0.6;
  • manganese (Mn) up to 0.8;
  • silicon (Si) up to 0.8;
  • carbon (C) up to 0.08;
  • phosphorus (P) up to 0.03;
  • sulfur (S) up to 0.025.

Imported substitutes: AISI 410S, AISI 429. The main domestic analogues are brands 08Х13 and 12Х13.

Technical characteristics and advantages

AISI 409 stainless steel has excellent strength, resistance to elevated temperatures, atmospheric corrosion and oxidation. It is ferromagnetic, that is, it has magnetic properties. Thanks to titanium stabilization, it is not susceptible to intergranular corrosion. Prone to temper brittleness.

AISI 409 stainless steel is considered heat resistant for intermittent use up to 815 °C and for continuous use up to 700 °C. The specific gravity of the alloy is 7730 kg/m³. Minimum tensile strength (temporary tensile strength) 400-560 MPa, Brinell hardness up to 180 HB, Rockwell hardness up to 74 HRB, yield strength 0.2% - 205 MPa, relative elongation 20%.

AISI 409 stainless steel can be easily welded using all known methods. The optimal method is arc welding in inert gases with minimal energy input into the weld. At the end of the work, the weld seam should be cleaned of scale and sautéed. This allows you to maintain the corrosion properties of the material at the proper level.

AISI 409 steel lends itself well to mechanical processing, including plastic deformation, drawing, stamping and perforation. Annealing is performed at a temperature of 850-925 ° C, cooling is in air. For passivation, a 10-20% HNO3 solution is used. After passivation, thorough rinsing with cold water and drying is necessary.

Area of application of stainless steel AISI 409

AISI 409 stainless steel is in demand in the food, mining, paper and pulp and chemical industries, mechanical engineering and architecture. It is made from:

  • parts with increased plasticity that are subject to shock loads (valves of hydraulic presses, household items);
  • products operated under the influence of slightly aggressive environments (precipitation, aqueous solutions of salts of organic acids at room temperature, etc.);
  • steam turbine blades, hardware, exhaust pipes, hoods and chimneys;
  • pressure vessels;
  • filling and packaging lines;
  • frames for drift eliminators in oil separators, plates and packings for distillation columns;
