How to use a search magnet correctly

Disadvantages of search magnets

Search magnets have become a part of human life. With their help, they clean agricultural crops, search for drowned and lost metal objects, and even search for meteorites that have fallen to the surface of the planet. The scope of application is really wide, but are these amazing helpers really that good? Are there any pitfalls in using them? In fact, they exist, and the shortcomings are quite obvious. Of course, these are not exactly disadvantages; rather, these are features of their functioning.

Why does adhesion force decrease?

By purchasing a neodymium magnet, we receive information about its adhesive strength. Let's imagine that a magnet is a round disk of a certain diameter and a certain thickness. When you bring it to a perfectly flat metal surface, you will notice how it is forcefully attracted to it.

In order to tear a magnet from the metal, you will need to apply a certain force. At the same time, the greater the adhesion force, the greater the force that will have to be applied to break it off. In some cases, this may require auxiliary tools to pry off the lower edge of the magnet.

After the magnet is torn off, it is necessary to take iron with a large amount of rust built up - the magnet will be attracted to such a surface, but it will be much easier to tear it off. Similarly, the adhesion force is affected by the surface condition of the metal sheet.

If there are roughness and dents on it, the adhesion force will noticeably drop. You can verify this by bringing a magnet to the edge of any metal object - tearing it off will be as easy as shelling pears.

What interferes with magnets at the bottom of reservoirs?

In order to imagine what a search magnet experiences under real operating conditions, you should look at the bottom of a reservoir, armed with a diving suit. Here you can find metal objects covered with many years of rust and covered with silt. Naturally, in such conditions the magnet will not work at full strength. Most likely, the adhesion force will drop below one hundred kilograms.

It’s a completely different matter if you are looking for a recently drowned object that has not yet become covered with silt, sand and rust - it is quite easy to pull out such a find. As for objects that have lain at the bottom for several decades, the magnet can easily fall off them.

The adhesion force will also become less if the object is under a layer of sand - in order to pull the find out of there you will need a very powerful magnet.

Why are powerful magnets dangerous?

Due to the above reasons, search magnets have another drawback. It is expressed in the fact that an object raised to the surface may unexpectedly fall off. If the find was rusty, then when it hits the bottom it may completely collapse.

Thus, the power of neodymium magnets becomes useless where it is necessary to pull to the surface any valuable object of interest for further research. When conducting search operations in mountain crevices, a magnet can be damaged by a strong blow - as a result, it can become demagnetized.

In addition, the magnetic field itself, which strongly attracts the magnet to the iron, can also be a disadvantage. As a result of such exposure, valuable finds that require careful handling may be destroyed and irretrievably lost.

Also, the magnetic field can play a fatal role if a mine or aerial bomb from the Great Patriotic War is found on the surveyed area of the river or lake bottom. The force of gravity can push the magnet and metal together so strongly that the detected projectile explodes, severely injuring searchers. As a result, it is impossible to work with powerful neodymium magnets without the appropriate knowledge.

What is a search magnet?

Search magnets today are gaining great popularity not only among novice treasure hunters, but also among professionals. Naturally, a magnet cannot replace a treasure hunter, but with its help you can also make many amazing finds.

If a treasure hunter is actively used on land, then search magnets in the vast majority of cases are used to search for archaeological valuables at the bottom of rivers, lakes, crossings, etc.

Which search magnet should you choose?

It is necessary to think in advance about what finds can be found in a particular location. Based on their weight, you should choose a search magnet. They start at 120 kg, but can also reach 600 kg.

At the same time, the weight of the search magnet is no more than 1.5 kg. These figures indicate how heavy a load a magnet can not only lift, but also hold for a long period of time.

Search magnets are divided into the following categories:

  • by lifting weight;
  • by price;
  • by the number of eye bolts, etc.

In particular, the eye bolt can be screwed not only into the plane of the magnet, but also into its end part. The cheapest search magnets are single-sided. They are less effective naturally.

Double-sided magnets are more expensive. All of them are available at affordable prices on the website ndfeb-magnit.ru.

Russian magnets versus Chinese ones

Of course, the most affordable search magnets are Chinese. However, if we are talking about a truly effective search, then you can refuse them. Of course, search magnets can be used to clear the field of small metal objects on the surface.

This is done so as not to break out with a shovel at every signal from the metal detector. Chinese analogues are also quite suitable for these purposes. But if the work is to be done at great depths, where the find is definitely covered with a large layer of silt and rust, it is better to rely on high-quality magnets.

In particular, a Russian manufacturer, which has production facilities in Kaluga (RedMag), produces magnets for the space industry. There is no doubt about their quality.

Of course, they are much more expensive than their Chinese counterparts. But with the latter, you will be able to pass by a sensational find, when a domestic product will allow you not only to detect, but also to pull an object weighing up to 600 kg to the surface.

Poryvaev will clearly demonstrate various types of neodymium search magnets from a Russian manufacturer:

Search magnet: what is it and how to use it?

To answer the question of how to use a search magnet and do it correctly, it is important to correctly assess the specifics of the materials from which this product is made. It is based on a rare-earth supermagnet based on a neodymium-iron-boron alloy.

This compact product can attract and securely hold metal objects whose weight is tens of times greater than its own mass. Thanks to their high power, search magnets successfully lift objects of impressive size from the bottom of wells, lakes and rivers.

They can be used to quickly and easily check large littered areas for metal objects (including scrap metal).

Limitations when using search magnets

In order for a search magnet to serve you for as long as possible and allow you to discover many interesting finds, you should remember its weaknesses:

 1) High temperatures. Neodymium alloy is extremely susceptible to high temperatures. Use at +80⁰C is almost guaranteed to lead to loss of its magnetic properties. The optimal temperature for using the product is –50..+50⁰C.

2) Moisture. The galvanized body of the search magnet reliably protects the neodymium alloy. The shell may cease to cope with its main function if there is serious damage, which can be caused, among other things, by poor cleaning of rust after using the product. The unprotected powder base of a neodymium magnet rusts in normal humidity, so the integrity of the body is a prerequisite for long and reliable service of the product.

Basic precautions when using search magnets

To ensure that working with a search magnet brings only positive emotions and impressions, you must remember to follow basic safety measures:

  1. Protective gloves. During search operations, small sharp fragments of iron and rust are inevitably found at the bottom of reservoirs or in littered areas. Be careful when cleaning the surface of the product. Thick protective gloves are a must.
  2. Take care of your fingers. The attractive force of the most powerful models of search magnets reaches 600-800 kg. Never allow parts of your body to come between a heavy metal object and the working surface of the product.
  3. Use the magnet correctly. To lift the product from a large object, do not forget to use an eye bolt. When working, always hold the search magnet strictly by the mount.

How to store a search magnet?

A search magnet is a unique thing necessary for expeditions and search work. You can buy it at any specialized store that sells clothing and equipment for outdoor activities, sports and professional activities.

A magnet for this purpose is made using a hard alloy of iron, boron and neodymium. This combination provides the product with excellent performance properties and increases the force of attraction of the metal.

Today, search magnets are widely used in many areas and everyday life. It is required:

  • to search for objects at depth: in wells, rivers and lakes;
  • to check reservoirs for the presence of large metal objects - ships, planes, tanks and cars;
  • for quick and effective cleaning of the area from metal debris;
  • to prepare an area with loose soil before working with a metal detector;
  • for searching for meteorite fragments;
  • for private pickling of areas for the presence of ferrous metal scrap.

Requirements for storage and use of neodymium magnet

Search magnets can be dangerous to humans, so users of such a device must follow a number of operating rules:

  • It is recommended to store and transport the product in a wooden box with wide walls. This will help avoid negative effects on humans and mechanical damage to surrounding objects;
  • if small metal products are attracted to the device, then in order to avoid cuts and injury, it is necessary to remove them using gloves;
  • Use the magnet carefully and carefully. Avoid possible exposure of lower or upper limbs to the gravity field;
  • the distance between the search object and electronic accessories must be at least 10 cm. Failure to comply with the requirements may disrupt the operation of phones, laptops, tablets and other devices;
  • The magnet should be stored away from water or electricity meters, and chains, cables and other steel parts should not be brought close to the product;
  • operation of the equipment is possible only at temperatures from -50 to +50 °C;
  • If the temperature conditions are not observed, the equipment may lose its magnetic properties.

Professionals and amateurs should remember that over 10 years of service, a search magnet loses about 2% of its magnetic properties.

How to choose a search magnet - TOP tips for treasure hunters

After reading this article, you will learn the main advantages of search magnets in comparison with pinpointers, familiarize yourself with the rules for using neodymium search magnets and make sure that buying a search magnet is a profitable investment. Extraordinary places to search will also be indicated. A search magnet, even if not very powerful, is an indispensable thing for a treasure hunter.

Every day a popular hobby is gaining momentum - searching for antiquities using a metal detector. Beginners are afraid to invest normal money in purchasing quality equipment. But based on my experience, I would like to note that only by investing money in quality things you get the expected result.

Today there will be no long and tedious stories about all the benefits of quality attributes.

Now I want to talk about search magnets, because by investing in a good magnet, you get two necessary search tools at once: a device for detecting and quickly removing any metal debris and a device for lifting metal products from the bottom of reservoirs. And there are a lot of relics hidden in the water.

How to choose a search magnet?

When purchasing a search magnet, you should first decide on its purpose. If you need it for searching on land or vertical searching at the bottom of a reservoir or exploring the bottom of old wells, then it would be the best solution to purchase a one-sided magnet, that is, with one magnetic surface. This magnet is cheaper. But if you decide to purchase a universal tool, then you should buy a double-sided magnet with a side eye bolt.

I will not list the obvious advantages of this product, but I will say that with the use of such a device, the number of finds increases significantly.

This is primarily due to the fact that when moving horizontally along the bottom of the reservoir under study, the magnet goes to a certain depth into the mud with the lower surface, and with the upper surface it collects all metal objects from the clogged bottom. This is a very important factor, since a magnet can attract small metal particles from a distance of no more than 15 cm.

So it’s clear: it’s better to buy a double-sided neodymium magnet. If you are planning to approach the purchase seriously, I advise you to familiarize yourself with the assortment of search magnets in the Mir Magnitov store - the largest niche store in the Russian Federation.

Places to find relics

The best places with the largest number of valuable finds are old bridges and military crossings. Good results are obtained from studies of mill whirlpools and pre-revolutionary wells.

Sometimes even studies of drains and garbage pits and station toilets yield impressive results! After all, search magnets even magnetize jewelry containing a ligature.

And what has never happened before: some thief, escaping from law enforcement agencies on a train, jumped out at the station and got rid of direct evidence by throwing it into the toilet - no one will swim there and look for it.

How to use a search magnet correctly

When buying a magnet with a high attractive force, which is written on the magnet in numbers after the letter F (this is the tearing load in kilograms), you should not worry about the possibility of being left without a magnet if it sticks well to the smooth surface of thick metal.

For these cases, there is an eye bolt, by screwing it into the body of the magnet you will gradually tear it away from the surface.

If the load is very large, as a rule, such cases occur with units with a power of 400 kg or more, you can use a lever to turn the eye bolt.

Don’t worry if a car suddenly ends up at the bottom, because its body is made of thin metal, and the magnet won’t stick to it too much. But you should definitely choose a climbing cord with a three-fold safety margin in case of snags.

A promising investment and some tips

Investing in a search magnet is a promising business, since the rare earth metals that make up its composition are only growing in price every year.

A neodymium magnet demagnetizes very slowly. On average, about 1% per year, provided the integrity of the case. Monitor the condition of the magnet coating and under no circumstances heat it above 80 degrees.

It is very convenient to use instead of a pinpointer: the batteries do not run out, and there is no unnecessary noise. It is better to use it when searching with a metal detector, storing it in a fabric bag. With the help of a bag, it will not become clogged and will be less susceptible to mechanical damage.

Neodymium magnets are very fragile and when chipped or broken they lose a lot of power.

People using pacemakers should handle them very carefully.

A very useful thing in everyday life, since you can always very quickly find a small metal object and filter liquids from chips.

Search magnet - Metals and their processing

Treasures, treasures, hiding places, jewelry These words reek of adventure, adventurism, and romance.

Who didn't dream of finding treasures as a child?

Some adults have kept their childhood dreams and are making them come true by engaging in treasure hunting.

Like all passionate people, amateur search engines have their own clubs and communities. There they exchange experiences, discuss search devices, and make collective forays.

Modern devices for detecting metals help treasure hunters. One such device is a search magnet. More about it below.

Design and types

A search magnet is capable of finding, capturing and lifting metal objects whose weight is much greater than the device itself by 50-100 times. The device is otherwise called an eternal or powerful magnet.

The working fluid consists of a neodymium magnet (contains Nd-Fe-B) enclosed in a glass-shaped turned steel body.

The body is coated with zinc, and the body is coated with nickel, which allows to be used for searching in water .

The housing protects and shapes the magnetic field in the correct direction. There are:

  1. Single-sided - convenient for searching from a boat, pier, bridge.
  2. Double-sided - have a universal purpose.
  3. Trawls are good for examining the bottom of reservoirs.
  4. Rods – for narrow and hard-to-reach places for conventional magnets.

They also differ in body diameter and magnetic strength .

A special bolt (eye bolt) is screwed into the top or side, intended for a cable or rope.

The second function of the bolt is that it is used to remove an object from a magnet.

To do this, the eye bolt is screwed completely into the body, after which the magnetized object can be removed.

Search magnets are most afraid of high temperatures (above +80); when exposed to strong heat, they lose their functions .

It is easy to work with: having attached it to a rope or cable, it is simply lowered into the desired place.

Objects containing ferromagnetic metals will be attracted to the device. Together with a magnet, they can be removed to the surface.

The fundamental difference is that a metal detector can only indicate the location of an object, while a magnet allows you to immediately “get” it. However, a magnet will not help when searching in the ground . Therefore, these two devices in the seeker’s arsenal are designed to complement each other, but not replace each other.

Other distinctive features:

  • the magnet retains its functions in an aqueous environment ;
  • no need to buy batteries or accumulators ;
  • absence of sound signals that attract attention or “declassify” the seeker;
  • do not take up much space, easy to take with you;
  • objects are attracted on their own ;
  • affordable price;
  • resistant to damage;
  • long service life, provided that the operating rules are followed - they lose one percent of their strength in a hundred years .

Where can it be used?

Used to search for objects outside the field of view :

  • in caves;
  • mountain failures;
  • wells;
  • sewers;
  • bodies of water;
  • swamps.

A magnet will be a good help during archaeological excavations and searches for wartime items.

Usually used in tandem with a metal detector. Using a magnet, excess, unnecessary metal is collected, but which will be “distracted” when searching with a metal detector. The metal detector then searches for more valuable alloys such as gold and silver.

Objects that are made of metals that have ferromagnetic properties can be attracted by such a magnet. For example, cast iron or nickel.

Ferromagnetic properties are properties of base metals that allow them to “stick” to magnets with great force.

The burning question is, is it possible to lift objects made of precious metals using a magnet?

It is possible if the composition contains metals that react to magnetic attraction.

There is no special search magnet for gold and silver .

However, it is quite possible to obtain jewelry and coins made of precious alloys with its help, because they also contain other elements that the magnet will attract.

For example: 585 standard gold consists of 58.5 percent of gold. The remaining 41.5 percent comes from other metals, including nickel.

Nickel is easily attracted to a magnet. However, in order for such jewelry to be lifted, there must be a touch to the jewelry find.

It's the same story with silver. If the alloy has ligatures (metals added to jewelry to increase wear resistance), objects or jewelry will be attracted.

Review of popular devices and their prices

China is considered the leader in production . Approximately 130 enterprises in China produce neodymium magnets.

As in any serious matter, caution is important :

  1. Ask the people you are going on search trips with to see if they have pacemakers . The device can disrupt the normal operation of the pacemaker.
  2. Credit cards with a magnetic stripe, mechanical watches, hearing aids and telephones should be kept away from the magnetic device.

Easy to use and maintain, affordable, these devices can help with:

  • searching for gold and other precious metals;
  • when digging non-ferrous metal and ferrous metal.

There are practically no restrictions on the place of application. At the same time, they are durable and do not lose their properties.

If the operating rules are followed, search magnets will help in searches for a long time.

How to choose a search magnet and what to do with it?

Search magnets have become a very popular topic today. This kind of “fishing” attracts not only boys and scrap metal seekers, but also quite respectable and wealthy people. Why is this happening? There is a boy in every man, but not everyone likes traditional fishing. It happens that the fish is “capricious”, the gear is chosen incorrectly, the place is chosen poorly, and besides, you need to look for worms and prepare bait.

And the fish itself, after all, you can buy it in the store. But with a magnet things are completely different. Here your tackle is always the same, but what you can catch with it is unknown. It is this intrigue that attracts. What if, on the next cast, the magnet takes with it not a rusty nail, but a rare dagger, a metal box with old chervonets, or a pistol from the times of the Great Patriotic War? Agree, this really tickles your nerves.

Search magnets have become widely available and at reasonable prices relatively recently. Modern technologies have reduced the cost of their production process, therefore, today, in order to get a magnet, you do not need to disassemble the old hard drive, just go to a store or on the Internet.

How to choose a magnet

At the same time, a beginner may have a reasonable question: how to choose a suitable magnet? After all, they differ both in size and in the force of attraction and cost. In reality, choosing the right product is not that difficult.

To begin with, we note that there are two types of magnets - single-sided and double-sided. They are distinguished by the fact that the first has only one working side of the magnet, while the second has two, respectively. Single-sided magnets provide only uniform fastening - the so-called.

The eye bolt is screwed only into the center of the plane opposite the working surface. It also happens that a bolt with a hook for attaching a rope is soldered to the body in which the magnet is located. In a double-sided magnet, the bolt can also be screwed into the side part - the “edge”.

Looking ahead, we note that a double-sided magnet has undeniable advantages, which is why it costs more. Due to the nature of the one-sided magnet, it can only be used by lowering it vertically downwards. That is, they can be used from a bridge or a boat (if you are searching in a river or lake). It is also suitable for exploring old wells.

However, if you look at search engine channels, you will notice that they usually throw a magnet while standing on the shore. For these cases, a double-sided magnet is needed. The “puck” should fall with its working side to the bottom, after which the magnet is guided along the bottom using a cable. A one-sided magnet will be of little use with this fishing method.

What weight should I choose?

We have already said that magnets come in two types according to their design. But when choosing a search engine, you need to take into account other properties and features. You must clearly understand why you need a magnet and where you will work with it. It is believed that search magnets must have an attractive force of at least 100-200 kg. At first glance it may seem like a lot, but in reality it is not.

For example, a magnet that states that the force of attraction corresponds to 100 kg will only be able to hold the specified weight under ideal conditions. He will be able to lift vertically upward a flat metal plate with a smooth and clean surface. But if you slightly change the angle of application of the force, the magnet begins to move off the surface. This means that it will be able to drag barely half of the specified mass along the bottom.

Now imagine what happens at the bottom of the river! The metal located there becomes overgrown with silt, sinks into the sand, and gets tangled in algae. So it turns out that you can hardly take out a thing weighing 10 kg on a “hundredth”! Don't forget about the current. When lifted off the bottom, the object immediately begins to vibrate and break off if the current is strong enough. Therefore, to search for various “artifacts” we can recommend magnets in the range of 200-400 kg.

They will not attract unnecessary pieces of hardware, but they will reliably magnetize interesting things.

Making money from scrap metal is a completely different story. There really is so much metal waste in our rivers and lakes that it is quite possible to earn our daily bread from it. In this case, the “search engines” should be more powerful – in the range of 600-800 kg.

Such magnets themselves weigh more than a kilogram, but they can easily pull out entire mountains of metal. There are cases when such magnets had to be torn off using machines.

But with their help you can catch not only bicycles, but even motorcycles and the remains of cars.

Choice of ammunition

If you decide to start searching, then in addition to the magnet you will definitely need to purchase the appropriate cable. Don't skimp. Magnets are not that expensive, but losing even an inexpensive magnet due to a broken rope is very annoying. Most often, search engines purchase special nylon cables used by climbers. They are protected from abrasion and have a particularly strong middle core, which ensures that the cable will not break at the most inopportune moment.

Choose the length of the cable based on your needs. Usually the length of the rope does not exceed 20 meters. It is physically impossible for even a strong man to throw a half-kilogram blank further. Be sure to purchase quality gloves. Cables and finds are very easy to cut and rub your palms. It is also advisable to have a lost and found bag. Finds from the bottom are often corroded by rust, covered with algae and silt, which is why they have an unsightly appearance and emit an unpleasant odor.

So it’s inconvenient to put them in a regular bag or backpack.

Pay attention to how the magnet is attached. Study the appropriate instructions on the Internet and select the appropriate unit.

Search Magnet Care

A high-quality magnet does not require special care. It is made of an alloy of neodymium, boron, iron and has a stainless steel coating. It is housed in a high-quality stainless steel case. Therefore, all caring for a magnet is wiping it with a dry cloth and cleaning it from small metal particles that stick to it and get clogged into the holes.

The neodymium magnet itself is reliable and durable. Over 10 years, on average, it loses no more than 1% of power. It cannot be hit and, most importantly, it cannot be exposed to high temperatures. If you heat it to 80 degrees, it will completely demagnetize and turn into a useless blank.

Many people like to film their searches. Do not forget that exposure to a magnet can be harmful to any electronics. Not only the camera, but also a mobile phone with a laptop can easily fail. So keep all your gadgets at a safe distance.

Check each time the reliability of the assembly and the integrity of the cable.

What can you catch?

Let's face it, non-ferrous and precious metals are not magnetic! And these are the immutable laws of physics. You can't argue with them. Therefore, only iron and other alloys can be caught with a magnet. Usually search engines boast about the keys, locks, nails, coins and other small things they found. Sometimes you can get various antiques: horseshoes, forged items, various tools.

It is quite common to find weapons and ammunition. This is a legacy not only of the 40s, but also of the 90s. It is better to stay away from such finds and return them to the bottom without regret. After all, no one has repealed the article for illegal trafficking in weapons and ammunition. But it’s not worth taking risks, hoping that the expert will not recognize your find as a weapon.

In general, only God knows what may lie at the bottom of a reservoir! You can find completely unexpected, and sometimes very valuable things!

Where to look?

It doesn't matter what you're looking for, scrap metal or ancient artifacts, the fishiest place will be where there are more people. This is logical, because somehow this thing has to get to the bottom! So it turns out that the most interesting “fishing” will be close to the bridges. This is where passers-by and travelers lose or intentionally let various things go under water. When constructing bridges and structures, builders also dump unnecessary or inappropriate metal into the water. Therefore, bridges are also interesting in terms of finding scrap metal.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  How much does 1 cube of cast iron weigh?

It is better to choose an ancient bridge rather than a modern one. After all, then you can find things of the corresponding era, and not just modern consumer goods.

Which magnet should you choose?

Domestic manufacturers of neodymium magnets have managed to gain a good reputation. At the same time, high-quality magnets are produced in Germany and Poland. But one of the largest producers is China. It is in this country that the largest reserves of rare earth metals, which include neodymium, are concentrated.

At the same time, the demand for the product is so high that China has introduced duties on the export of magnets to cover the needs of its own engineering industry. Despite this, you can purchase high-quality Chinese-made magnets on the Internet at an attractive price. There are disputes online regarding the power of magnets from different manufacturers.

But the opinions expressed are mostly subjective, since all manufacturers monitor the quality of their products. Therefore, it is best to choose the manufacturer yourself.

Ultimately, no matter what magnet you choose, it must fulfill its functions, namely: guarantee you exciting leisure time or even provide income.

We wish everyone a successful search!

How to choose a search magnet

A search magnet is the most popular product among treasure hunters in our country. It is used to search for metal finds on the surface of the earth or at the very bottom of reservoirs. An inexpensive and very exciting accessory that gives a lot of positive emotions and helps you spend time pleasantly and usefully actively in nature. Today you can buy a 400 kg magnet online with home delivery. Its cost is affordable for many.

Types of search magnets

Search magnets are divided into:

  • unilateral
  • double sided

Think in advance about what kind of finds you want to discover: the type of magnet is selected based on the weight category of the item being mined. They range from 120 kg to 600 kg. With high magnetizing force, the weight of the products is calculated to be only 1.5 kg. Search magnets can lift heavy loads and hold them for a long time.

Reviews of search magnets always say that precious and non-ferrous metals cannot be found with its help, since they are not magnetic. Thus, only iron and some alloys can be found. Treasure hunters often find keys, coins, locks, knives and other “trifles”. Among the antiques, there are mainly ancient instruments; horseshoes, as well as various forged items, are valued.

Search engines often come across ammunition and weapons, both from the Second World War and the dashing 90s.

How to use a search magnet correctly when searching for objects in water?

  1. To get used to it, you should practice throwing in an open space with soft ground. Otherwise, the magnet may fly away from where you were aiming or hurt you.
  2. Determine the depth of the reservoir and be sure to select a strong rope of optimal length.
  3. Do not hold the magnet stationary in one place, as it may become attached to something very heavy, causing the cable to come off.

How to choose the right search magnet - an objective rating of the best search magnets for any purpose

The search magnet is a round device with a steel body equipped with a neodymium core of varying power. It is used for “fishing” for scrap metal, silver, gold items and jewelry. There are many types of units, each of which differs in power, weight and design.

How to choose a search magnet

Search magnets differ in design, use cases, weight, power and size. Such diversity takes a beginner by surprise. Techniques and life hacks for successful “magnetic fishing” will help you choose a search magnet.

Single sided or double sided

There are two main types of search magnets used in different directions. The choice depends on the conditions of use, so before you buy a single-sided or double-sided unit, it is important to compare their advantages and disadvantages:

Characteristic Single sided magnet Double sided magnet
Grip on object The find is magnetized at the end, so even when working on a rocky bottom, the likelihood of unhooking is low.  Thanks to two working surfaces, it easily attracts an object, but is more likely to be lost when colliding with an obstacle.
Terms of Use The unit is perfect for “vertical fishing”. It is more convenient to search while in a boat or on a bridge. The magnet enters perpendicularly into the water without turning over. A universal magnet with a double surface that can be used in any environment. It will attract objects, even upside down.
Weight The lightweight device is great for long searches.  A double-sided magnet is a third heavier than a single-sided one, which leads to rapid fatigue of the search engine.
Design It has one eye-bolt fastening and a single working surface. Equipped with two surfaces and fastenings.

What weight of search magnet to choose

The average weight of search magnets is 0.2-4 kg. In your arsenal you need to have a unit with a force of attraction of at least 100-200 kg. By purchasing such a device, a search engine will be able to lift a flat metal plate with a smooth and clean surface or small objects from the bottom. In real conditions, fouling with silt, algae, and current weakens the effect of the magnet. As a result, it turns out that having an attractive force of 100 kg, the structure will overpower an object weighing no more than 7-10 kg.

Based on reviews from owners, it is better to choose a magnet with more powerful characteristics - 200-400 kg. They will magnetize interesting things, bypassing priceless pieces of hardware.

You can also buy a magnet for searching in water to make money, but in this case you will need a power in the range of 600-800 kg. Despite their modest weight, they are able to overcome mountains of metal. With their help you can find bicycles, motorcycles and remains of cars.

Objective rating of search magnets

At the moment, the absolute market leaders are:

  1. Forceberg F-200 . A model that rightfully tops the list of the best search magnets due to its characteristics. Despite its modest dimensions, it provides traction of 220 kg. And two eye bolts are used to separate the magnet from the find and make searching easier. Wear less than 1% in 10 years.
  2. Redmag F-200 . The modification is famous for its compliance with the specified power declared by the manufacturer. The maximum tensile strength of the presented model is 200-225 kg. An improved design made of metal and neodymium, with the addition of iron and boron impurities, strengthens the assembly several times, giving it additional strength. Used to extract scrap metal from water, soil and even construction waste
  3. F-300 Superpower . The model is designed to search for steel objects and scrap metal. In calm conditions (in the absence of current), the unit is capable of pulling about 200 kg, in other cases the figure decreases several times. The device weighs 1.9 kg. This modification is perfect for beginner search engines.
  4. Nepra F-200 . Improved unit with additional corrosion protection. Nickel plating and galvanizing of the cup extend the life of the magnet, protecting it from rust. The maximum adhesion force is 200 kg, it is achieved only in ideal conditions, and decreases when immersed in a body of water. Among the disadvantages, in comparison with competitors, we can highlight the rate of loss of attractive forces - over 2% over 10 years.

You need to select and buy a magnet based on the specific application. For beginner searchers, a basic lightweight model with a low attractive force is suitable. More experienced fishermen should pay attention to the updated modification for retrieving large finds.

What can you catch?

Fragments of historical monuments - knives, weapons from the times of the Great Patriotic War - are often recovered from the bottom of lakes and rivers. A magnet with good attractive force will pull out hidden treasures in wells and garbage pits. Cossack sabers were repeatedly raised from the Dnieper. All products containing iron and ferromagnetic metals will be attracted to the magnet.

Pure gold is not magnetized, but such jewelry also contains a ligature (a mixture to impart strength). For example, products of 585 standard contain 41.5% other metals, including nickel, which is highly attractive.

You can also find silver, but not all its varieties can be raised. Sets of past centuries, with the addition of ligature, are often mined from the depths of centuries-old lakes.

Stainless steel is magnetic to varying degrees, depending on the alloys added. Aluminum, brass, bronze, tin, lead and copper will not be attracted.

Often in your finds you can find metal sealed cylinders worn by German soldiers. They kept their valuables in them.

Places to find relics

Ideal search places are military crossings and centuries-old bridges. Valuable finds can be discovered when examining mill whirlpools and pre-revolutionary wells. The drains, cesspools and station toilets surprise you with their artifacts.

Search for valuable coins

Only cheap royal change will not be attracted to the magnet, but medium-denomination coins made with an admixture of nickel and chromium will delight their treasure hunter. You shouldn't count on expensive coins, because... They were made of gold and silver, which means they are very weakly magnetized.

Demagnetization of search magnets

Even the most powerful magnets lose their properties over time. Ferrite products will last for several decades, but neodymium products will last 200-300 years.

Causes of involuntary demagnetization:

  1. Heat. When heated above 80 ⁰C, the magnet will completely lose its attractive force. Only some models have increased resistance to temperature changes and can withstand up to 200 ⁰C.
  2. Strong blows. Mechanical impacts on a magnet (impact, falling from a height) deprive it of its value.
  3. Errors when cutting and drilling. Strong pressure when processing a magnet with a grinder can lead to loss of characteristics.
  4. Impact of external factors. When exposed to a magnetic field with an induction of about 3-4 Tesla, the magnet can be demagnetized.

It will be possible to restore the lost properties only in large-scale production using an industrial magnetization installation.

Accessories for search magnets

Thanks to proper use, transportation and storage, the search magnet will last a long time and will not lose its properties ahead of schedule. Accessories protect the unit from environmental influences and ensure efficient use and transportation.

Ropes for search magnets

Chinese cord and clothesline are the first step to failure. They only look very strong, but in practice they will break during the first dive. An “accident” will happen even if the object is too heavy or simply caught on a snag.

In order not to lose the magnet on your first “fishing”, you need to use a very strong rope. When choosing, it is important to consider its characteristics. For example, if the search involves a magnet capable of pulling out an object weighing 400 kg, then the breaking capacity of the cord should be no less. Particular attention should be paid to the diameter; it should be at least 0.4-0.5 cm. But the length depends on the scale of the search; rope of 10-15 meters is in great demand.

Ways to bind a search magnet

The main secret of success is proper lacing. Initially, you need to tie the magnet with a constrictor knot, use a surgical one a little higher, and secure it all with an academic one. Pull and cauterize the end. Tie the cord on your hand so you don’t miss it when casting.

Features of transportation and storage

When using search magnets, you need to follow several recommendations regarding transportation and storage:

  1. The unit must be kept in a special non-magnetic container. A wooden box or a special bag with shielding is perfect.
  2. The structure should be moved very carefully, keeping a distance of several meters from electrical equipment and machinery. A strong magnetic field will harm gadgets and computer devices.

Bags for magnets

Bags for search magnets with shielding are an indispensable accessory for any treasure hunter. It is made of wear-resistant material with sewn-in steel plates to isolate the magnetic field. A person will be able to move the unit without the risk of accidentally magnetizing it in the wrong place.

The bag is quite durable and perfectly protects the magnet from external damage, simplifying transportation.

Search Magnet Alternative

Magnetic trawls are devices with an elongated horizontal working surface, designed from a special rare alloy of neodymium, iron and boron for work in difficult conditions. The device is covered with stainless steel and applied using a special technology. This is done in order to protect the magnet itself from damage.

conclusions

Before purchasing a magnet, you need to decide on its purpose and the subject of your search. For “fishing” from a boat or bridge, a small one-sided device is suitable; it is especially popular among beginners. The double-sided unit has better characteristics and can be used in various adverse conditions. For an ordinary amateur, a magnet with a low attractive force of 300-400 kg will be suitable, but for a professional – from 500 kg and above.

How I tested the search magnet

If there is a search passion, it is in everything and everywhere. It’s the same in the life of a treasure hunter: this interest is reflected literally everywhere and manifests itself in everything. I have already written to you about the behavior of a treasure hunter in the city , when he lives an ordinary life and does not seem to stand out from the crowd. I told you how this manifests itself in my case, perhaps differently in others. And now I will share with you a story that happened some time ago to me and one of my friends.

It was at the end of winter, it is clear that the maps had already been looked at a thousand times, constant communication on forums began to get a little boring, I wanted to quickly pick up the device and plunge “headlong into the hobby.” We plunged, almost in the literal sense of the word. The fact is that there is a lake on the territory of our village.

Lake behind the village

The lake is interesting because in one of its areas it almost does not freeze. As the old-timers say, once upon a time they even caught fish on the lake, but now it’s scary to even wash your hands there - everything is so cluttered and littered. It is known that treasure hunters are passionate people, so one evening we decided to leave the search magnet in this reservoir. Of course, we didn’t expect anything serious, but in any case, I wanted to get at least some experience working with a magnet.

Magnet rental

We didn’t have our own search magnet, so we decided to rent it for one day from one of the stores that offers everyone equipment for searching for treasures.

There we were advised on some safety rules for working with a magnet, on how best to tie it so as not to leave it in the water, and they strongly recommended using a strong and thick cord, since a thin rope is the main mistake of a treasure hunter who thinks naively that the rope is 2-3 mm. diameter this device can withstand.

We rented a search magnet

We didn’t bother too much, so for testing we took the simplest magnet that was available in the store: a magnet with a 200 kg lift, one-sided, which, judging by its appearance, had already been in use for several years. By the way, the seller right in the store showed how to use the eye bolt.

Indeed, if a magnet sticks with its entire plane to a sheet of iron, it will be quite difficult to tear it off with a normal tear. But if you tighten the eye bolt, the situation is solved once or twice.

Instructions were received, a rope with a diameter of 5 mm and a length of 20 meters was found (I don’t know the name), the backpack was filled with food supplies.

Magnet tests on the lake

And so, on the morning of a winter day, we are there. In our region, winter is not as severe as in other climatic zones, it’s only minus 4 degrees outside, and half the lake is not frozen. They say that something was poured there (for years), so the water does not freeze. We settled down, had a snack and after some time made the first cast.

No, we knew that the lake was dirty, that it was full of garbage, that every year all sorts of rubbish was dumped here from the village, but after the first cast we picked up a rusty metal sheet, then some pipe, plumbing parts, a bicycle frame and etc.

If you take this seriously, you can even make money from metal by clearing such lakes.

Magnet tests on the lake

Two hours later, we stopped, since we were already all covered in dirt, rust, and we weren’t able to recover any interesting finds (to admit, we didn’t expect to find anything), but we got metal from the lake pretty much, right off to the side on the shore, they piled it all up; whoever needed it would take it (a week later, that pile was no longer there).

The main thing is that we have gained the first experience of working with a search magnet. We walked up to the car, put ourselves in order, and as we passed by the lake, we decided to throw the magnet one last time. And here it is - luck. On the shore there was a bunch of two keys. Apparently, these are the keys to the door lock, and they haven’t even rusted yet, just slightly covered with a gray-dark coating.

But at least something interesting, at least somehow they consoled their treasure-hunting soul.

A bunch of two keys

The next day, a friend left and returned the magnet to the store, sharing his impressions with the seller, and we decided for ourselves that we would definitely buy this item by next season.

Unfortunately, it turned out that the comrade and I never took the magnet A colleague moved to another city, and I also had some problems in my life. But I have a dream, a desire that hasn’t gone away, so I hope that by next season I’ll definitely pick up a simple magnet.

Even the neighbors can get a bucket from the well, and that’s it. And simply, when I go fishing on the lakes and rivers of my region, I mark so many places for myself. And for sure, somewhere at the bottom of the reservoir lies “my” find.

Who will definitely “wait” for her time, and will see me jumping around her with joyful screams

Search magnets: reviews, review, characteristics

As reviews of search magnets show, these devices are becoming a very popular topic. Moreover, this applies not only to romantics and treasure hunters, but also to quite presentable and wealthy people. Some of them see an opportunity to make money, others are simply carried away by the process in the hope of finding a rare or unique item. This kind of “hunting” can be compared to fishing, in which people are also attracted by the intrigue of expecting an unsurpassed catch.

Description

It is worth noting that search magnets, reviews of which are presented in the article, come in two varieties: single-sided and double-sided. They differ from each other in the number of working edges. In the first case, to fix the element, a standard fastening is used in the form of an eye bolt, screwed into the central part of the plane in the non-working area. The second option is to weld the rope clamp to the body.

In double-sided devices, the fastening bolts can be screwed into the “edge” (side surface). This modification definitely has advantages; therefore, its cost is higher. The single-sided version can only be used for vertical lowering.

The optimal areas for work are from a bridge, a boat or in old wells. Many searchers throw the tool from the shoreline, and only the double-sided version is suitable for this purpose. The working washer falls face down to the bottom, after which the device is guided along the bottom using a cable.

A model with one active side is ineffective with this method of operation.

Double-sided search magnets became widely available not so long ago, and their prices have dropped significantly. The introduction of innovative technologies has made it possible to reduce the cost of the production process of elements. Since devices differ in size, cost and attraction efficiency, it is not so easy for a beginner to choose a suitable model, taking into account the features of its further use.

As already indicated, magnets are divided into two types of execution. When choosing a search analogue, you should take into account several more nuances and characteristics.

Regardless of the region of study and the final goal, reviews of search magnets indicate that they must have an attraction of at least 100 kilograms. It's not as much as it might seem.

The fact is that a device designed for 100 kg is capable of holding the specified weight under ideal conditions. For example, lifting a smooth metal part strictly vertically upward.

Peculiarities

If during operation you slightly change the angle of application of force, the device moves off the surface. Thus, even a 400 kg search magnet is capable of dragging no more than half of the calculated mass along the bottom. Considering that there is a lot of algae, sand and other foreign objects at the bottom of the reservoir, the unit can actually be pulled out 10 times less in weight.

You also need to remember the intensity and strength of the current. When the object comes off the bottom, it vibrates and breaks off if the water pressure is strong enough. In this regard, experts recommend using devices with a force of 200–400 kg to search for metal “artifacts.”

If a magnet is used to search for scrap metal, regardless of its historical value, the tool force must be at least 600 kg.

Although such a unit itself weighs more than a kilogram, it is capable of “fishing out” mountains of scrap metal, including the remains of vehicles and aircraft.

Accessories

Those who decide to mine certain finds will need to equip the search magnet with a special cable. You should not save in this direction, because the specified equipment will not cost much, and the loss of even a budget modification will not cause pleasant emotions.

As a rule, climbing ropes and their analogues are used as rope. Such devices are protected from abrasion and have a strong middle core, which prevents the rope from breaking at the most inopportune moment.

The length of the rope is chosen according to personal preference; usually it does not exceed 20 meters.

It is unlikely that it will be possible to physically throw a fairly heavy blank, even for a well-trained person. You will also need to purchase gloves made of durable material, since it is easy to get injured on elements of equipment and the findings. In addition, a special bag for the “catch” will not hurt.

Metal products lifted from the bottom are often corroded by rust, covered with algae, and have a rather unpleasant odor. In this regard, transporting them in a bag or a regular backpack is impractical.

Another point worth paying attention to is tying the rope with a simple but reliable knot.

Maintenance and care

A high-quality double-sided search magnet does not require special care. The materials used to manufacture such a device are alloys of iron, boron, neodymium with a stainless coating. It is housed in a housing with anti-corrosion coating. The essence of care is wiping the element with a dry rag, clearing it of metal shavings that collect in hard-to-reach places, of which there are not many.

The device itself is durable and reliable. The loss of power parameter is no more than one percent in 10 years. The magnet must not be subjected to shock or thermal heating.

For example, 80 degrees is enough to completely neutralize the properties of the tool, after which it turns into an ordinary blank.

If searches are accompanied by video recordings, it should be taken into account that magnetic waves negatively affect all electronic devices, including mobile phones and tablets. After each use, it is necessary to check the integrity of the rope and the reliability of the knot.

What and where do they find it?

Reviews of search magnets clearly state that precious and non-ferrous metals cannot be found with its help, since they are not magnetic. Consequently, only iron and some alloys can be found. Often, “pathfinders” find keys, locks, coins, knives and other “trifles.” Among antiques, horseshoes, ancient tools, and forged items are most valued.

Search engines often come across ammunition and weapons, both from the Second World War and the dashing 90s. It’s better not to mess around with such “belongings” by returning them or calling the appropriate special services.

Regardless of the purpose of the search (scrap metal, artifacts, or all together), the best “catch” will be in crowded areas. It turns out that good places include pedestrian and automobile bridges. Most often, this is where citizens lose or deliberately throw away valuables and other items.

In the area of ancient crossings, the likelihood of finding valuables is higher than near modern structures.

Search magnet “Supersila”

Devices under this brand are produced by the Moscow NPK Supersystem. The assortment includes options that differ in operating principle, material of manufacture, and load capacity.

One of the most popular modifications is the F-300 version. The design includes a neodymium working part and a steel frame. The body is equipped with a threaded through hole, which serves for convenient pressing of the element from the iron surface through an eye bolt, which is included in the kit along with the nut.

Search magnets "Supersila" are designed to identify and lift steel objects from reservoirs, caves, wells, and excavations. Judging by the reviews, this design is suitable for searching for scrap metal. The lifting force under optimal conditions is several hundred kilograms. The device in question pays for itself in several trips, even if you only search for ferrous metal. The F-300 model is capable of holding up to 420 kilograms, the body coating is zinc, the weight of the device is 1.9 kg.

These devices are popular with tens of thousands of search engines in many countries. The advantages of the unit include the compliance of the specified power with the declared characteristics, unlike most Chinese analogues. The design of the best search magnets is standard:

  • metal body in the form of a bowl;
  • working part made of neodymium;
  • eye bolt with nut.

The introduction of iron and boron impurities makes it possible to enhance the properties of the unit and give it additional strength. The working element is securely mounted in a steel cup using epoxy resin, and the protective anti-corrosion coating is zinc-coated.

A mandatory structural part includes an eye bolt, oriented to separate the magnet from the metal object. In addition, the specified screw serves to secure the cable. The part is mounted in a special through hole.

The purpose of one- and two-sided search magnets “Triton”:

  • protection of wells and reservoirs from iron-containing inclusions;
  • search for archaeological, historical and valuable artifacts;
  • checking sand or soil for the presence of metal objects;
  • scrap metal sorting;
  • search for lost objects on beaches and in reservoirs.

Magnets from the Nepra company

The Nepra company has been producing various search equipment since 2009. The profile direction is search single- and double-sided magnets and related equipment. Single elements have a simple design and are optimally suited for work in mines, wells and swamps. Versions with two working edges are designed for manipulation from a boat and the coastal zone of various bodies of water.

The table below shows the comparative parameters of some types of Nepra search magnets.

Safety

Since a double-sided search magnet belongs to the category of high-risk tools, certain rules must be followed during its operation and storage:

  1. It is forbidden to place fingers or other body parts between the metal and the magnet. This can lead to soft tissue injury.
  2. To avoid damage to electronic devices (watches, phones and other gadgets), you should keep them at a distance of at least 250 millimeters from the working device.
  3. When heated above 80 degrees, the unit completely loses its properties.
  4. The magnet is transported in wooden boxes with a wall thickness of 10 mm on the sides and 20 mm on the bottom.
  5. The natural loss of performance is 1–3 percent over 10 years.
  6. The device is stored in a special case or packaging with thickened walls and a bottom covered with foam, rubber, and boards.

Price

Many consumers are interested in the question, how much does a search magnet cost? Its price depends on the model configuration, equipment and manufacturer. A two-section new device will cost from 2.5–3 thousand rubles.
