Now the copper needs to be melted and oxygen passed through the resulting melt.

The last thing to do is to put the copper through an electrochemical refining step in a sulfur oxide solution. Impurities of more active metals will remain in the electrolyte, while the rest will precipitate. As a result, the purified composition contains about 99.9% pure metal.
