Where can you get copper?

Where can I find scrap metal to sell?

In order to start a business with scrap metal, you need to know the basic tactics that should be applied to both the collection of non-ferrous metal and any other.

What is a scrap metal business?

  1. Search and collection of scrap metal
  2. Delivery of collected material to the cutting site
  3. Sorting scrap by type and size
  4. Safe storage until delivery
  5. Sales and profit

Important! Before heading to the scrap site, be sure to make sure your actions are legal. So, for example, you cannot go to the training ground of a military unit that has not yet been disbanded; the development of such places is prohibited, and the actions of unauthorized persons in them are criminally punishable.

Places to find scrap metal

In order to find large volumes of metal and not waste hopeless time, it is worth knowing the search location in advance. Such places include:

Fields . It is often in abandoned fields that you can find broken machines, tractors, combines and trucks. Just look at one track from a tractor caterpillar, which is the most commonly found part. Agricultural machinery is large in size and when parts fail, workers repair it right in the fields. To avoid difficulties, broken parts were left on the side of the field - it was difficult to carry it further, and it was unsafe to leave it on the field.

Enterprises . In almost every city there are old non-working enterprises that have remained partially abandoned and stolen. They often find tons of buried copper, ferrous metal or aluminum.

Repair bases . Despite the fact that almost all closed and abandoned repair bases have long been found and the metal removed, there are still some where no human has set foot since the closure.

Finding such a place is real luck, which means that you will spend the next couple of days there. Their advantage is that large heavy equipment was repaired on them and only one bolt found can pull half a kilogram.

For convenience, broken parts and spare parts were put in one place, and not scattered in all corners.

Dump . If you don't know where to collect scrap metal in your city, go to a landfill. The landfill will be an excellent search place for both beginners and professionals. At a landfill, a beginner can learn to understand the types of metal - ferrous and non-ferrous, so as not to hand over it in bulk for the price of ferrous metal. The downside of the landfill is the unpleasant smell, especially on a hot summer day, but the advantage is that with hard work at the landfill you can still collect scrap metal.

The territory of abandoned training grounds and shooting ranges . In such a territory you can find a lot of finds, ranging from large-caliber gun casings to targets and replicas of tank models. It is at abandoned landfills that you can find a lot of scrap metal, the search for which cannot be done without a special device (especially when searching for shell casings).

Important! Experts recommend coming to the search site in early spring. At this time, the snow had already melted, and the ground had not yet been overgrown with a high layer of grass.

If the search site is a field, it is in the spring that you will not run into agricultural workers and will not cause trouble to each other.

Non-ferrous metal. What does it contain?

For some, the process of searching for and handing over scrap metal may seem like a frivolous matter, but if you find out the cost of non-ferrous metal scrap at collection points, you may be pleasantly surprised. Unlike ferrous metal, the price of non-ferrous metal scrap is much higher - doing business with it can give a person a carefree existence.

Important! Anyone who specializes in metal searching tries to look for non-ferrous scrap metal. For example, the most expensive is copper, its price reaches 300 rubles per 1 kg.

Which devices contain non-ferrous metal:

  • Refrigerators . It is this household appliance that ranks first in terms of the amount of non-ferrous metal it contains. Thus, in engines you can find from 1.5 to 3 kg of copper, and up to 1 kg of aluminum can be removed from the freezer. Do not forget about special cooling tubes, which also contain copper alloys. You need to be extremely careful when disassembling and extracting non-ferrous metal, because the product contains toxic gas.
  • Televisions . Experienced metal detectors extract up to 1.5 kg of copper from old tube TVs, and only about 0.5 kg from semiconductor devices. They do not contain aluminum, but they do have expensive capacitors and resistors.
  • Washing machines . If you disassemble this household appliance, you can also find an impressive amount of copper, zinc and aluminum.

Don’t forget about more industrial products from which non-ferrous metal can be extracted. These include: transformers and old electric motors, starting devices, fluorescent lamps, electrical wires and more.

The search for non-ferrous metals should be carried out precisely at abandoned industrial enterprises, the work at which was carried out using machines and shut-off valves, taps, valves, and other mechanisms that contain a good amount of brass, bronze and other copper alloys.

Search Tools

It's good when the search and collection process comes down to plunging huge metal parts into the body, but sometimes the parts are invisible or small and need to be found first. In this case, there is no way to do without auxiliary equipment. For this use:

  • Metal detectors
  • Search magnets

You cannot do without a metal detector in searching for non-ferrous metals in the ground; for this you do not have to buy an expensive model, the most important thing is that it has such functions as:

  • Adjusting sensitivity, search depth and tone
  • Reacting to different types of metals and switching to their modes

You need to look for scrap metal with a metal detector close to the soil and nearby on the sides. After the device has detected metal and beeped, you need to look at the display indicators and start digging.

Important! If you go searching with a metal detector, check the device's charge level or take a set of spare batteries.

Another effective tool in metal searching is a special search magnet. It is mainly used to search for scrap in rivers, ponds, lakes, wells and fountains. It is on reservoirs that it is better to search with a magnet. Its way of working is to remagnetize metal mining in an easy and convenient way.

Non-ferrous metal scrap mining

After you have found the crowbar yourself or with the help of devices, you can proceed directly to the digging. To be a good cop you will need several essential tools:

  • Cutting tool . Sometimes the scrap is so large that it needs to be cut to transport it. In this case, you can use a grinder, scissors for cutting metal, a circular saw or a reciprocating saw.
  • Analyzer . Thanks to this device, you will know what type of metal the item is made of. This device is useful for sorting scrap, but its cost is very high and not everyone can afford such a device.
  • Loading devices and transport . Regardless of where you look for scrap, you cannot do without transport. On it, the collected scrap metal is delivered to the place where it is sorted and stored, and then to the collection point.

Scrap metal collection is gaining momentum every year and is becoming quite a profitable business. The most popular is non-ferrous metal scrap, since its raw materials are the most expensive. In order to maximize the benefits from your chosen business, you must first choose a place where to look for scrap metal and take the accompanying tools.

How much copper is in a microwave and where is it located? How to remove copper from a microwave and how to use it

Currently, there is considerable demand for copper. Most collection points for non-ferrous scrap metal are willing to pay about 300 rubles per kilogram. In addition to the above, it can be used for other purposes. But where can you get it, you ask? One option is to disassemble the old microwave.

Is there copper in the microwave?

Many consumers are simply confident that, with the exception of the power cord, there are no other parts in the microwave oven that contain this metal. How then does a household device work? That's right - no way. And, in view of what has been said, the indicated opinion is erroneous. In reality, various wiring and the motor still contain copper, and it is they that ensure the stable and uninterrupted operation of a household device.

Where to look for copper in a microwave oven?

First, you will need to take a screwdriver to disassemble the device. At the first stage, we remove the back panel and door, after which all the insides of the household appliance will appear. There we will see several small transformers (coils), as well as small wiring, and a propeller consisting of stainless blades and a copper coil.

But the main part of the treasured metal is located mainly in the transformer, which in the majority forms the cost of the microwave oven.

Why do you need copper in a microwave?

As mentioned above, the transformer is the main part, without which the stove simply will not work. In addition to the above, small parts containing copper are also an integral part, namely wiring and boards that ensure the operation of the timer and the general control panel of the device.

On a note! This metal makes it possible to set the desired heating temperature for food and its duration, as well as apply options (depending on the purchased model).

How to Use Copper from an Old Microwave

In fact, the extracted metal and parts obtained during the disassembly of the microwave oven can be reused, and a knowledgeable craftsman will obviously not have them lying around on dusty shelves.

First of all, you should find out the condition of the transformer containing copper . If it is working, then you can use it to repair another furnace, or try to sell it to buyers of similar things at the local market. You can also save this part in case the next microwave you purchase breaks down. If it doesn't work, the best option is to use copper from it.

The metal we are looking for can also be used for various purposes. It depends on your own preferences. Let's look at the best options.

Secondary use

In cases where the transformer is inoperative, it can be disassembled and a decent bundle of non-ferrous metal (about 500 grams) can be obtained. But where to use it? Here are some options for reusing mined copper:

  • From the seized metal you can create a variety of crafts (for everyone).
  • Use it as a rope for drying clothes (the wires are not thick enough, so you will need to twist them in several layers).
  • Copper wiring will become useful in the household. For example, they can be used when tying cucumbers, tomatoes and other plants.
  • Car enthusiasts will be able to use copper wire for their own purposes. Twist the rings, place nuts or washers on them, and then place them in a visible place in the garage. This storage method is quite convenient, because you can sort the parts by size, and if necessary, you don’t have to search for a suitable one for several minutes.

Is it possible to take copper to a scrap metal collection point?

Yes, such a possibility exists. Having disassembled all the parts, you will get about 700 grams of copper. And if you clean the small wiring and power cord, the figure will increase to 800 grams. Plus, the stove itself is made of metal, which is also accepted, and by handing over the body together, you can earn about 300–350 rubles.

On a note! Along with the copper, you can also return the iron body of the microwave. This will significantly increase the amount.

Everything will depend on the model of the equipment and its dimensions.

Where can I find copper for scrap metal?

Many people have come across advertisements “ I’ll buy scrap copper ” or “We accept copper at a high price” on bulletin boards, on the Internet, or heard from friends. The RussLom company accepts non-ferrous scrap from individuals who want to make money by selling scrap, metal waste or selling copper products, as well as manufacturing and trading enterprises. Many people have a question: where to get non-ferrous metal waste in order to make a good profit?

There are many options for how and where you can collect scrap metal and bring it to a point where copper scrap is accepted :

  • If you still have old household appliances. In just one old TV you can collect up to 1.5 kg of copper in individual parts! Non-ferrous metal is also present in washing machines, radios, electric stoves, and refrigerators. The latest household appliances are especially interesting for their old models. In an engine, the weight of copper can reach 3 kg. Where to look? Disassemble the wire connection, inductor, transformer. In addition to scrap metal, such products contain components valuable for repair shops, for example, capacitors, resistors, etc.
  • If there is old equipment in a garage, barn or closed production area. Decommissioned units, installations, machines, and equipment consist of transformers that are made with copper windings. In addition to this part, the devices also contain relays and starters - so in small quantities you can increase the total weight of scrap ready for delivery. In a copper cable, the base is also a copper conductor.
  • If you bought an old house or summer cottage. Old fittings, including plumbing, were made of copper in the last century, so when reconstructing and demolishing old buildings, there is a high probability of getting rich by selling the metal.
  • If your ancestors kept various things as household items. These include figurines, old coins, jewelry, and utensils.

If you want to seriously start making money by selling scrap, you need to learn how to organize a “business” correctly. To do this you will need:

Where to find and how to mine copper in Fallout 76

Copper in Fallout 76 is one of the many materials needed to craft various items and scattered throughout the game world. There are several ways to obtain this resource in the game. You can get it by dismantling various things or discovering copper deposits. In this guide, we will describe in detail all the methods of copper mining and tell you where you can find its sources on the world map.

How to get copper in Fallout 76

To get copper in this game, you can use several methods. The first and probably the easiest of these is collecting light bulbs.

There are hundreds of these items scattered throughout the map, and you can always get some copper from them. This is a fairly reliable method, although ineffective. The second option is old fuses. You can take them apart to end up with copper and glass.

Again, old fuses are lying around and can provide you with a significant amount of copper.

Finally, you can start looking for copper deposits. These sources can give you the most amount of resource; much more than light bulbs and fuses. However, finding copper deposits will be much more difficult. If you find the desired object, then go up to it and hover the cursor over it - the game will have to confirm that there is a deposit in front of you. All you have to do is mine your copper.

Remember that you can always monitor the amount of materials you have and allocate those resources that you need at the moment. As a result, it will be much easier for you to spot the items you need. Even those things whose properties you previously had no idea about will be highlighted.

Location of all copper deposits

To find copper deposits in Fallout 76, you have to explore the game world. There are several places where deposits can be found. One of them is located to the left of the bridge leading to the Overseer Camp, not far from the nearest rocks.

Another deposit where you can mine copper is located next to the lake northeast of the Ash Heap region, on the southern shore of the reservoir (map and screenshot shown above).

How to make copper heavier

Finding scrap metal has become a source of income for many. There are people for whom this is a hobby or a way to earn money.

This process is labor-intensive and time-consuming.

For beginner metal detectors, this may seem like a challenge, but if you know where to find metal, then this task is not so difficult.

Devices containing copper and its alloys

You don't have to go far to mine copper. This does not have to be excavations in the fields using a metal detector. You can take copper from old electrical appliances.

Because repairing old appliances takes a lot of time and money, they are often thrown away.

But before that, it is possible to obtain scrap metal from them, which, after processing, is used to make pipes, wire, profile sheets, or to replace some elements for devices.

Copper alloy can be easily found:

  • In bearings, radiators, motors, gears.
  • In old jewelry and decorative elements.
  • In plumbing.
  • In kitchen utensils.
  • In radiators and computers.

Copper itself can be found in the following devices:

  • Up to one and a half kilograms of scrap metal can be found in a tube TV.
  • Almost three kilograms of copper can be taken from the engine of an old Soviet-style refrigerator.
  • Smaller amounts of copper are taken from washing machines, hair dryers, and microwave ovens.
  • If there is a starter from a vehicle that is unsuitable for repair, then metal can also be extracted from there.

From these devices, you can’t take much copper, but these devices are widely found.

Where to look?

In order not to waste time searching, you need to know in advance where to get the metal. Such places include:

  • Fields. You can often find broken equipment there.
  • Abandoned factories, often containing a lot of aluminum and copper.
  • Car repair centers. Finding such an abandoned place is worth a lot. Where else to look for scrap metal? The convenience lies in the fact that all the broken parts are put in one place and sometimes just one bolt can pull out a kilogram.
  • Dump. This place is suitable for those who are beginners and do not know where to search for copper for change. This is where you can easily learn to distinguish between types of metals, so as not to rent them out at the same price in the future.
  • Abandoned landfill. In such places you can easily find shell casings, targets and dummies of equipment.

If you choose a field for searching, it is best to search with metal in the spring, so as not to collide with workers and not create problems for each other.

How to properly collect colored scrap

Almost all metal detectors streamline the scrap collection process. To carry out this process, you need to optimize your activities to the maximum. To do this you will need:

  • Decide on a system for collecting devices that are unsuitable for further use.
  • Take care of the delivery of collected scrap metal to the dismantling point. To do this, you need a vehicle on which transportation will be carried out. Take care in advance of the place where all the scrap metal will be located, because there will be quite a lot of it.
  • Develop a disassembly process. To do this, you need to purchase a special tool to separate the metal from other materials and begin sorting.
  • Arrange rapid transportation of metal to collection points.

You should also know that prices for non-ferrous scrap vary depending on the time of year.

Since the winter period is difficult for metal mining, the price is higher than in the summer.

Therefore, it would be more advisable to hold on to the existing material until “better” times.

Copper production method

Obtaining copper, even in industrial conditions, is a very labor-intensive process:

  • At the initial stage, the metal is crushed, after which it is cleaned of impurities of other rocks. After purification, the starting material is fired, after which a solid substance can be obtained - cinder, which in turn undergoes melting.
  • After this procedure, matte is obtained, which contains up to 50% copper.
  • The manufactured matte is enriched with oxygen, air blowing, and quartz flux.
  • Only after these procedures can blister copper be obtained; it is melted and passed through an oxygen melt.
  • Finally, the resulting material is treated with sulfur oxide, after which the percentage of copper is 99.9%.

How to get a high price for scrap metal

Every scrap hunter wants to sell the scrap metal he finds at the best price for himself.

As mentioned above, you can search for metal in the summer and sell it in the winter, when prices rise.

But if your priority is to make a profit regularly, then it is best to look for collection points that offer prices higher than those of competitors.

Do not also forget that the cost depends on the quality and composition of the material that is being rented. The highest price is offered for pure copper.

Where to look for copper for scrap - Metalworker's Guide

Ground penetrating radars and metal detectors are expensive devices that you don’t always have the funds to purchase. There are other search methods to find scrap metal in the soil at abandoned landfills, landfills, old factories and storage facilities.

Geographic maps will indicate the locations of scrap deposits

To search for scrap metal without a metal detector, just use old geographical maps indicating the following locations:

1) Sites where there were landfills and dumps of metallurgical waste, abandoned factories and enterprises that have not been operating for a long time. The object of research can be any place with the exception of exclusion zones and places where archaeologists are excavating. Searching is prohibited on any land subject to the Law Protecting Non-Purpose Lands.

2) Territories of abandoned collective farm and village repair shops, machine and tractor stations. Places where technical enterprises, state farms, farms, and crop fields were located.

3) Areas where villages, hamlets, hamlets, and beaches used to be located, now abandoned or flooded after the construction of the reservoir.

4) Areas where military units and shooting ranges were previously located, now relocated or evacuated. The exception is facilities where rocket and space technology and equipment were previously serviced and tested. Scrap metal in this place can be toxic, radioactive, dangerous to humans and the environment.

-FOOTNOTE-

By the way! A hint where to find deposits of scrap in the ground can be the stories of local old-timers, information available on the Internet and the media.

Search without georadar or metal detector

Test pits and metal probes will help you find valuable scrap in the ground without a georadar or a metal detector. An effective search is also possible with the help of a rod, a pendulum, and search magnets.

Soil rustling

Drilling the soil means manually digging a trench using a shovel. The soil on the site is cut to a depth of 1.5-2 m, the direction of the dig can be longitudinal or circular. The work is carried out in the warm season, since manual labor is very labor-intensive, and it is almost impossible to dig frozen soil by hand. To avoid soil shedding, trenches are dug at a distance of at least 0.5 m from each other. For ease of searching, the depth of the recess should be 1.5 times the width.

Working with a metal probe

The efficiency of searching for scrap will be increased by a search probe - a moderately light and rigid metal pin up to 2 m long. Scrap is detected by immersion or puncture of a layer of soil. The method is suitable if the soil is loose and soft, which is typical for swampy lowlands, plowed fields, and areas where excavation work has recently been carried out. The probe can be made independently or made to order from a hexagon or fittings.

Vine made of metal rods

The vine is a popular tool for finding places to dig wells, which is also used to detect scrap in the thickness of the earth. You can buy the tool or make it yourself. It consists of a pair of thin rods made of aluminum, steel or copper wire, bent in an L shape at an angle of 90°. The parameters of the rods with a wire cross section of 4-6 mm are approximately 340-400 mm by 80-100 mm.

The working principle of the vine:

a) L-shaped rods become an antenna that captures electromagnetic waves, which indicates ground anomalies: voids, metal objects;

b) for work, the rods are picked up so that they are parallel to each other, are not clamped, but can rotate freely in different directions;

c) holding the device in their hands, begin to move along the perimeter or diagonal of the area;

d) if an anomaly is detected in the soil, the ends of the device will rotate 45-60o, no matter in which direction;

e) they begin to dig in the place where the vine indicated.

-FOOTNOTE-

Note! Searching with a vine is effective in summer. Snow covering the ground in winter significantly weakens and screens the signal of electromagnetic radiation.

Search pendulum

A spherical pendulum made of wood, a neutral metal, will tell you how to find scrap metal. A simplified option is to make a product from plastic, thick cardboard, then cover it with foil. A sphere with a diameter of 200-300 mm is suspended on a cotton thread 800-120 mm long. How to work with a pendulum:

  • A sphere with foil acquires the ability to capture electromagnetic waves. The principle of searching for scrap is based on this.
  • Before use, check the functionality of the device. The pendulum is placed above the sheet of metal, moving away or bringing it closer until rotation begins.
  • If you plan to search for scrap steel, take a sheet of steel for inspection. When a pendulum is prepared to detect gold, silver, a gold or silver object is taken and tests are carried out on them.

-FOOTNOTE-

Important! The length of the thread is selected individually, depending on the metal that you plan to search for.

Magnets for detecting scrap metal

To search for ferrous metal scrap in a pond, river, lake, or any aquatic environment, one- and two-sided search magnets are ideal. They are placed in the water, moving on foot or by boat, attracting small and large objects from the bottom.

By the way! Single-sided magnets are convenient for vertical searching from a slope, boat or bridge. Double-sided products are more suitable for casting from the shore, after which the load is pulled back on a cable.

The type and size of search magnets may vary. The holding force, depending on the parameters, is 80-600 kg. The magnet design is the same:

  • galvanized body, protecting against corrosion and mechanical damage;
  • the core is made of neodymium, the top is a three-layer nickel-copper coating;
  • one or two eye bolts.

Note! The cost of a neodymium magnet depends on the size and holding force. The average price of models capable of lifting 300 kg is 3300-3500 rubles, 600 kg – 6300-6500 rubles.

An important aspect of searches is safety precautions.

Compliance with basic safety rules is the key to the success of an enterprise.

1) Before you go looking for scrap metal, choose comfortable clothes that almost completely cover the body, leaving no exposed areas. This is especially important if you are planning a trip to a landfill site, abandoned enterprises and chemical industry storage facilities.

2) Shoes are chosen with thick rubberized soles, with reinforced toes and heels. It will protect against dirt, moisture, reagents and substances that corrode the skin.

3) If you plan to cut scrap locally, it is important to have glasses to protect your eyes from mechanical damage and metal fragments.

When collecting scrap, you must take a first aid kit with antiseptics. The sharp edges of recyclable materials, especially rusty ones, with soil particles and efflorescence, are a breeding ground for dangerous microbes, bacteria and viruses.

Where to get copper at home

08.01.2018

Finding scrap metal has become a source of income for many. There are people for whom this is a hobby or a way to earn money. This process is labor-intensive and time-consuming. For beginner metal detectors, this may seem like a challenge, but if you know where to find metal, then this task is not so difficult.

Copper ore

In the depths of the earth there are quite a large number of different minerals that can be used to produce various materials. Copper ore is quite widespread - it is used for processing and producing various substances that are used in industry. It is worth considering that such ore, which contains copper, may also contain other minerals. It is recommended to use earthen rock that contains at least 0.5-1% metal.

Copper ore

Classification

A huge amount of a wide variety of copper ores are being mined. The classification is carried out according to their origin. The following groups of copper ores are distinguished:

  1. Pyrite has become quite widespread. The rock is a compound of iron and copper and has a large number of various inclusions and veins of other impurities.
  2. Stratiform is represented by a combination of copper shales and sandstones. This kind of rock has also become widespread, as it is represented by a large deposit. The main characteristics include a simple sheet shape, as well as a uniform distribution of all useful components. Due to this, copper rock of this type is most in demand, as it allows for productivity at the same level.
  3. Copper-nickel. This ore is characterized by massive texture inclusions of cobalt and gold, as well as platinum group metals. The deposits are in vein and sheet form.
  4. Porphyry copper or hydrothermal. Copper ore deposits of this kind contain a high concentration of silver and gold, selenium and other chemicals. In addition, all useful substances are in higher concentration, due to which the breed is in demand. It is extremely rare.
  5. Carbonate. This group includes iron-copper and carbonatite ore. It is worth considering that this breed was found only in South Africa. The mine being developed is classified as massive alkaline rock.
  6. Skarn is a group that is characterized by a local location in a wide variety of rocks. Characteristic properties include small size and complex morphology. It is worth considering that in this case the ore containing copper has a high concentration. However, the metal is unevenly distributed. The rocks being mined have a copper concentration of about three percent.

Copper pyrite

Copper practically does not occur, for example, like gold, in the form of massive nuggets. The largest such formation can be called a deposit in North America, the mass of which is 420 tons. With 250 types of copper, only 20 of them are widely used in their pure form, others are used only as alloying elements.

Copper ore deposits

Copper is considered the most common metal, which is used in a wide variety of industries. Deposits of copper ore are found in almost all countries. An example is the discovery of deposits in Arizona and Nevada. Copper ore is also mined in Cuba, where oxide deposits are common. In Peru, chloride formations are being mined.

Chino copper quarry in the USA Chuquicamata copper quarry in Chile

Considering porphyry deposits of copper ore or the distribution of sulfide deposits, we note that today there are practically no enriched mines.

This is due to the fact that such metal has been used for many years. The industry processes rocks that have a copper concentration of about 0.5%.

After aluminum and iron, copper ranks third in terms of production worldwide.

There are deposits in Russia that allow the extraction of copper ore in fairly large volumes. If we consider the share of the Russian Federation in world ore production, then this figure is 9%. The leading place is occupied by Chile, where up to 33% of copper ore is concentrated.

The following mines are considered the largest deposits:

  1. In Chile, the Chuquicamata field. This mine has been developed over the past 100 years, during which about 26 million tons of metal have been mined.
  2. The second mine is located in Chile. It was opened in 1990.

In addition, deposits were discovered in Brazil and Peru, as well as Kazakhstan. According to some calculations, there are still more than 400 million tons of the metal in question in the bowels of the earth.

Applications of copper ore

The natural resource in question has become very widespread. As previously noted, its extraction has been carried out for several decades. Copper ore can contain a fairly large number of useful elements, for example, gold and silver. Therefore, its distribution is quite extensive.

Appearance of copper ore

The use of the mined copper mixture is associated with the production of various metals. There are two main copper production technologies:

  1. hydrometallurgical;
  2. pyrometallurgical.

The second method involves fire refining of metal. Due to this, ore can be processed in almost any volume. In addition, exposure to fire allows almost all useful substances to be extracted from the rock. Pyrometallurgical technology is used to isolate copper from rocks that have a low degree of metal enrichment. The hydrometallurgical method is used exclusively for processing oxidized and native rock, which also have low copper concentrations.

In conclusion, we note that copper today is included in almost all alloys. Its addition as an alloying element allows you to change the basic performance properties.

Where to find copper scrap for scrap metal

Article posted date: 03/19/2018 18:59

Collecting more scrap metal and getting money for it is everyone’s dream since school years. It becomes even more pleasant to think that in this way you can help nature by ridding it of metal waste. To find material, you don’t have to go to fields and forests, because metal is also found in household items, for example, in electrical equipment. The cost of scrap metal can vary, it depends on the type of metal, and copper is one of the most profitable metals.

Has your household appliance served its purpose and is ready for disposal? Don’t rush to throw it away - non-ferrous metals can be found in many types of equipment, and instead of throwing away such valuable waste, you can extract useful elements from it and hand it over to a collection point.

How to find copper?

Copper scrap is especially valuable as it is used in many areas of production. You can find current prices for copper scrap on our website. You can find raw materials in televisions, especially in old ones, there is about one and a half kilograms of this metal.

The new models have three times less copper. Good sources of metal are compression refrigerators, electric motors, there are about a kilogram of copper raw materials.

However, everything is not so simple - copper must be literally mined, extracted from the body, which is difficult to destroy, especially if it is made of cast iron.

The colored scrap is inside:

  • relay;
  • transformers;
  • starters;
  • fluorescent lamps.

Subtleties of copper collection

To optimize the process of collecting copper scrap, you need to create a specific scheme for yourself, according to which you will search for copper-containing devices, deliver them to the disassembly site, disassemble them, and then hand them over to a scrap metal collection point. Copper can be found in large quantities in landfills, in areas where houses are being built, and in non-working transformer boxes there is also a lot of copper.

It is convenient to disassemble and store scrap in the garage. Although it is not always convenient to bring assembled devices there, which contain very little copper - then this is extra work. You can find a way out if you have your own transport - in this case, the metal collector can carry the required tools with him and, with their help, disassemble the equipment where he finds it.

Is it possible to produce copper yourself?

To obtain copper raw materials, you must first mine it, then crush it, clean it of impurities, using a special enrichment technique (flotation). Then the mass must be burned in a furnace with air blast, a cinder consisting of several metals is formed. It should be melted in a reverberatory furnace (or electric furnace). Now you have what is called matte, which is about half copper.

Heat the matte with compressed air enriched with oxygen. Add SiO2 sand. During such manipulations, the iron sulfide present in the mass will evaporate as SO2 gas. The oxidation of Cu2S will begin, with which Cu2O will react. With the help of such stages, blister copper is formed before your eyes; it consists almost entirely of copper, but there are also impurities (0.7-1.5%). Now the copper needs to be melted and oxygen passed through the resulting melt.

The last thing to do is to put the copper through an electrochemical refining step in a sulfur oxide solution. Impurities of more active metals will remain in the electrolyte, while the rest will precipitate. As a result, the purified composition contains about 99.9% pure metal.

As you can see, copper production is not an entirely simple process and the best solution in most cases is to hand over copper scrap to our scrap metal collection point.

Where to look for copper for scrapping

Copper and its alloys (bronze, brass) are found in most household appliances, particularly video and audio equipment.

Selling copper scrap is a profitable business. Copper scrap is in great demand, so any scrap metal collection point will accept it without hesitation. It is only important to find valuable recyclable materials.

Which devices contain copper and its alloys?

About 1.5 kg of copper can be extracted from an old tube TV; more precisely, it is located in:

  • throttle;
  • transformer;
  • installation wires.

There is no such quantity in a semiconductor TV; the maximum that can be extracted from it is 0.4-0.5 kg. But an old-style refrigerator made in the USSR is a real success for a non-ferrous metal seeker.

Such units today are practically not repaired, so owners most often throw them away. One motor directly contains about 3 kilograms of copper scrap. The tubes through which the refrigerant circulates are also made of copper. Copper scrap, which is quite expensive, is not the only expensive alloy that can be recovered from used refrigeration equipment.

Copper scrap can be removed from the following fixtures and parts:

  • relay;
  • transformer;
  • device for starting electric motors;
  • starter;
  • fittings for daylight lamps.

Of course, they won’t contain a large amount of valuable recyclable materials, but these elements are used everywhere, which is why they are thrown away much more often than refrigerators and televisions. Therefore, they are suitable as a source of copper scrap.

Where can you find copper for scrap metal?

Many scrap metal collection points will gladly accept your copper scrap. The cost of scrap copper exceeds the cost of ferrous metals, so you can make good money by selling unwanted copper products, parts and other equipment containing copper and its alloys - brass or bronze.

What old appliances might contain copper?

An old tube TV can yield about one and a half kilograms of copper. All the copper goes to the transformer, inductor and mounting wires. There is practically no aluminum in old TVs.

A CRT TV based on semiconductors does not have a large amount of copper (no more than 400-500 grams). But it contains expensive resistors and capacitors that can be assembled by an experienced assembler.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  How to melt aluminum at home

A true find for professional scrap metal collectors is an old Soviet refrigerator. Recently, they are often thrown away due to the inability to carry out repairs and the lack of spare parts for them.

The refrigerator motor alone can contain up to three kilograms of pure copper. Often, refrigerator cooling tubes are also made of copper or other expensive alloys.

Freezing chambers of two-chamber Soviet refrigerators will bring scrap metal collectors a kilogram of pure aluminum or even more stainless steel

Copper for scrap metal can also be found:

  • in transformers;
  • starters;
  • relay;
  • magnetic starters;
  • fittings of fluorescent lamps.

Although the content of pure copper in such devices is not very high, nevertheless, due to their widespread occurrence, they are often used as a source of secondary copper.

The price of copper depends on its purity and the percentage of copper in the product - the higher the amount of copper contained in its alloy, the higher the price will be.

Since impurities reduce the electrical conductivity of copper (arsenic and antimony reduce the electrical and thermal conductivity of copper the most), in the production of current conductors the purest specialized grades of copper are usually used: “M00k” - cathode copper, “M00b” - oxygen-free copper, it contains no more than 0.001% impurities. This type of copper is used for the manufacture of transformers, refrigerators, office equipment, and cables with high flux intensity.

How to collect copper correctly?

To optimize the collection of scrap metal, it is necessary to develop an algorithm for collecting devices containing copper, organize their delivery to the dismantling site, organize the disassembly itself, and deliver the copper to the scrap metal collection point.

Copper scrap can often be found at construction sites, landfills, and abandoned transformer boxes. You can disassemble and store copper in the garage.

 Although it is possible to obtain copper at the location of a certain equipment or item, to do this you will need to constantly have the necessary tools with you, so this option is appropriate for people with vehicles.

Getting copper to sell for scrap is still half the battle. It is also important to sell it profitably. Please note that non-ferrous scrap prices fluctuate greatly throughout the year. Copper prices usually fall in the summer, so it's best to save your mined copper until the winter and wait for its value to rise.

Please note that even with the current level of development of scientific and technological progress, there is no worthy replacement for copper, and in the future its price will only increase. It is also necessary to take into account that the reserves of copper ore in the world are decreasing, which means that the cost of copper scrap will rise .

Fallout 4 Guide: Where to find copper for crafting and construction

The ability to build your own settlements in Fallout 4 is a big step up from home improvement in Skyrim. However, in order to build the perfect settlement (in your mind), you will need various materials. And some of them are rare enough to cause problems. Such as copper.

Copper is a very common material for settlement construction, especially when it comes to items that rely on electricity.

Remember that before you start building, you must dismantle all the objects and items that are in the area - this will give you quite a lot of basic materials.
Construction guide here.

Copper may be a more problematic resource. First of all, pay attention to those things that include Copper in the name.

You can also find a lot of items in stores that you can buy and disassemble for copper. To make your search easier, you can mark copper to search, so that all items containing it will be marked with a magnifying glass.

Read all Fallout 4 guides here.

What things can be disassembled for copper?

Where to get scrap metal or how to make money on iron

Every state on the planet expresses interest in the extraction and production of high-quality metals. The process must be the least expensive and environmentally friendly. Mining iron ores requires the existence of natural resources, requires high-tech equipment and is expensive.

Source of additional income

Metal recycling can reduce production costs, reduce the consumption of natural resources and solve the problem of environmental pollution. Finding scrap metal can be fun for anyone. This is both an exciting process and a source of additional income. You can collect it for free.

The cost at which scrap metal is accepted at recycling centers varies depending on the region.

This type of income brings income to people who collect, sort and deliver it to recycling points, regardless of the territory; searching for scrap metal in Siberia is no different from the territory of the Far East or other parts of the country.

Searching for scrap metal may raise certain questions for a beginner. First of all, you need to decide where to search.

It is worth mentioning the places where scrap metal can be collected constructively:

  • in agricultural and farm fields;
  • in forests;
  • at abandoned landfills;
  • on the territory of old repair bases;
  • in closed and abandoned factories and enterprises;
  • in landfills;
  • within the city limits;
  • in the countryside.

To find out where to get scrap metal, just study the contents of your own storage rooms, garages, sheds and other rooms where broken appliances are stored.

Collecting scrap metal in agricultural and farm fields

Abandoned fields and thickets of vegetation located in the immediate vicinity are suitable for searching for scrap metal. You can find old parts from tractors or other agricultural equipment. Due to the large dimensions, repairs take place on the field, and failed parts are left there. The edges of agricultural fields are littered with metal objects suitable for recycling.

Searching for scrap metal in the forests

The territory of Russia stores a large amount of military equipment in its forests. A terrible legacy remains from the time of the battles. Many of these “cemeteries of military equipment” have long been abandoned. It is unprofitable to remove and dispose of such waste.

The solution to environmental problems in clearing forest areas of scrap metal lies on the shoulders of enthusiasts and people involved in the collection and delivery of recyclable materials to collection points.

Scrap metal in the forest may be unsafe due to the possibility of undisposed ammunition.

Collecting scrap metal at military sites

At firing ranges and shooting ranges you can find a large number of shell casings and even dummies of military equipment. Searching for metal objects requires special equipment. The best time to search is early spring. During this period, the snow melts and the ground becomes loose, which makes it possible to detect and easily remove scrap metal from the ground.

Collection of scrap metal at idle repair depots

Many such bases have already been devastated, but occasionally the “getters” may get lucky. Large equipment was repaired at such bases. Each piece found weighs a lot. Finding metal scraps suitable for recycling is made easier here due to the fact that they were all stored in clearly designated places. Therefore, having discovered deposits of scrap metal, you do not need to waste time scanning every centimeter of the territory.

Searching for scrap metal in abandoned factories and enterprises

In almost every city in Russia there is one or more non-working enterprises. Deposits of aluminum, ferrous metals or copper are often found on their territory. Most of the factories have been explored for a long time, however, scrap metal collection in such an area should not be stopped. The amount of buried metal waste here is enormous.

Collecting scrap metal from landfills

A city scrap metal dump can become a real Klondike. These places are great for beginners and professional scrap miners. Here you can find different types of metals, and also quickly learn to determine their type and cost. Abandoned landfills that are no longer very popular among searchers can be valuable. Do not forget about the unpleasant specific smell. It is best to get respirators or other items to protect your respiratory tract.

Scrap metal collection in rural areas

It is advisable to search for metal waste on the territory of abandoned collective farms and villages, on farms in the ground and along the sides of agricultural roads. Vehicle repairs were carried out on site, and parts were thrown out on the side of the road.

To search for abandoned villages, it is better to acquire maps from the 50-60s of the 20th century, compare them with the current location of settlements, and pay attention to the territories that turned out to be abandoned.

Scrap metal can be found in former cowsheds or farm equipment repair shops.

Metal in the city

You can collect scrap metal in the city at public transport stops, car or household appliance repair shops. Construction sites, abandoned houses, and garage cooperatives are also rich in it. Garbage containers contain household appliances, electrical wiring, and metal pipes discarded by citizens. Scrap metal in urban areas can even be found in parks and streets, as well as in areas left after demolition of residential buildings, especially in the suburbs or private sector.

In the city limits it is much easier to find places where to get non-ferrous scrap metal, abundant in brass and aluminum. Copper can often be found in trash containers. It comes from electrical wires, some decorative items or utensils, and building components. You shouldn’t think about where to get copper for scrap metal if there are abandoned metallurgical enterprises nearby.

Finding scrap requires time, effort and special equipment. Metal detectors vary in power and size. They allow you to detect scrap metal in a field or forest, but there are devices that can find metal products at depth. As an alternative, powerful magnets (from 1.2 tons) are suitable.

You will need transport for the removal of scrap metal and an area where it will be sorted and processed for recycling. Better to use a shed. It is important to sort the found scrap, separate ferrous metals from non-ferrous ones, and get rid of excess rubber or plastic parts in the found items. Unassembled metal will not be accepted for recycling.

Where to look for copper scrap metal

The average price of copper (Cu) in Russia today is 300 rubles per kilogram. This non-ferrous metal is expensive and is in demand in various areas of industrial production, as well as in scientific activities. Collection points offer favorable prices for the purchase of non-ferrous metal scrap. But many people have an ambiguous question - where to get copper scrap?

An unsafe and simply indecent way is to cut wires and steal from summer cottages. Such techniques can result in criminal penalties and significant fines. We urge you not to engage in sabotage, especially since there are completely legal and honest ways to obtain scrap copper.

What is useful for searching

Of course a car. It will probably be difficult to come across flowers lying around near your home or on the street. Searches are often concentrated far from the searcher’s place of residence.

And even if you find a couple of tens of kilograms, it will be hard to carry this load on yourself. This is where a car comes in handy. An ordinary passenger car is sufficient, since copper is heavy and has a high density.

The trunk of a regular car can fit up to several hundred kilograms, so you can easily do without a truck or minibus.

In order to extract metal from the most inaccessible places, and there are many of them, tools such as a grinder and possibly a gas cutter will find use. And finally, what places should you look in to find red gold that isn’t lying around on the road?

What places are worth visiting?

Copper finders who distinguish this alloy from others know the exact places where this metal can be found. One of the popular places is a landfill, which is far from a pleasant place, but everything that is there is no one’s. There will be no complaints, unless the place is already occupied by the “garbage mafia”. At the landfill you can find broken household appliances and appliances.

Discarded cables and damaged transformers can be found at service power stations and construction sites. Often, station employees themselves don’t mind earning extra money. Therefore, try to get in touch with the station employee and offer your small price for the found transformer. And it won’t be at a loss and you can make good money.

What does the color metal contain?

The main sources of non-ferrous metal content are:

  • Old tube TVs, from which up to 1.5 kg of copper are extracted,
  • Semiconductor TVs – up to 0.5 kg,
  • Household refrigerators - from 1 to 1.5 kg of copper is provided only by the engine, but do not forget that this alloy is also present in the radiator grille.
  • Installation wires - the red metal content per 100 meters reaches 3-4 kg,
  • Inductors (choke) with copper winding - up to 1.5 kg,
  • Old transformers. It is more difficult to find them, but if you are lucky, the share of non-ferrous metal in the transformer is 10% of its weight, and this is not small, reaching several hundred kilograms of the alloy,
  • Any electric motors - per 1 kW of energy there is 1 kg of metal, that is, the copper content depends on the engine power. The more powerful, the more copper,
  • Fluorescent lamps. They have inductor coils with copper windings, with a copper content of approximately 200-300 grams. Many enterprises and construction sites throw out used lamps in bundles, so the extraction may not be bad.

There is a chance that one of the trips to catch the red metal could bring up to several hundred kilograms of copper, or even more. A few hours of work a day, ingenuity, observation, desire, experience in searching and all this will help replenish the family budget, and collection points will accept copper waste at an expensive price.
