How to make your own skate sharpening machine

Using a skate sharpener

How to make your own skate sharpening machine

Skates do not require special care. The main rules are to dry them after use, sharpen them on time and make sure that the blades do not become rusty. To do this you need a special skate sharpener. To sharpen them, it is not enough to use a sharpening machine; a U-shaped groove is machined into the blade.

What does sharpening give?

Several reasons to regularly sharpen your skates:

  • the athlete gains confidence and a sense of perseverance on the ice;
  • well-sharpened blades help control balance on ice;
  • sharp blades help perform rotations, accelerate and perform elements;
  • sliding becomes smoother;
  • A dull blade increases the risk of injury.

Devices and tools

Let's look at what tools there are for sharpening skates with your own hands:

  1. The abrasive touchstone is a slingshot for skates with a plastic handle. On-line editing of blades. The tool removes burrs left after sharpening. The movements are carried out smoothly, without pressure, so as not to cut off the groove. To get the best results, it is recommended to use lubricant or wet the blades with running water. They only trim the blades, but do not sharpen them.
  2. A whetstone is an abrasive material for straightening a blade after sharpening.
  3. Edge Again is a handheld, portable skate sharpener.

What is the best way to sharpen?

Each equipment owner decides independently which device to use for sharpening skates. An at-home procedure or a manual skate sharpener will not replace a professional one, especially for serious sports.

Sharpening machines

The most popular machines for sharpening skates are nordway and ProSharp, they have been tested in practice. Instructions on how to use the Nordway machine:

  1. Turn on the machine.
  2. When the circle's motion becomes stationary, apply the blade to the circle, pointing it to the left, against the disc, along the edge.
  3. Repeat the procedure three times, adjusting the shape of the edge.
  4. Adjust the movement of the support bar as necessary.

If you have no experience with such devices, first try an experiment on an old pair.

Consumables

Additional components expand the capabilities of the machine:

  • vices - they can be universal, for any pair, or they can be selected professionally for a specific sport;
  • diamond discs for sharpening equipment, they vary in color and diameter;
  • adapters from larger to smaller diameter;
  • diamond groove pencils;
  • whetstones, for removing burrs.

Specifics

Sharpening skates has its own characteristics. Before the process, it is clarified where exactly the athlete will play - on artificial or natural ice, weight category, skating style. When playing hockey, an important parameter is the place on the team as an attacker, goalkeeper or defender.

The depth of the groove is adjusted depending on the use of the equipment:

  • in figure skating it reaches 5-6 mm;
  • for hockey - 20mm;
  • for speed skating - 45mm.

If burrs are found on the equipment, sharpening is not necessary.

Signs that equipment needs sharpening

How to understand that it’s time to sharpen your skates:

  • there is no groove on the blade or it is covered with rust;
  • when a turn is made, the blades move to the side;
  • the runners slide during repulsion.

How to carry out the procedure at home

You will need:

  1. A vice for clamping the dies, otherwise the skate will slip out.
  2. A needle file is a round file. With its help, the groove becomes even.
  3. A block with a hole the width of the blade.

How to sharpen:

  1. Place the equipment horizontally, clamping it with a vice. Place a block with a file inside on top.
  2. Use a file to make a hole. Move it sideways until the groove becomes noticeable.
  3. Continue the procedure until a sharp edge appears.

Now sanding is done: wrap the file in sandpaper and run it along the blade without touching the edge.

Methods

There are two sharpening methods: straight and grooved. Skates go on sale straight sharpened. But in practice, this method does not justify itself. Although high speed is achieved and there is the possibility of sharp braking, maneuverability comes to naught.

Sharpening under the gutter develops the same speed as a straight line, makes movements maneuverable, but braking is difficult. It is preferred by hockey players and figure skating athletes.

FTB - sharpening. Used on European ice, but rarely used in Russia. European matches are played on artificial ice, so the emphasis is not on speed, but on the grip of the blade with the surface.

How to distinguish sharpened equipment

Let's look at several visual signs of sharpened equipment. A sharpened pair of skates has a groove on the inside. The lateral ribs are sharp and of equal thickness. Sports palaces will help you get the job done professionally.

Choosing a machine for sharpening skates

How to make your own skate sharpening machine

Skating, as a basis, is present in many sports. Well-sharpened blades allow you to quickly move across the icy surface. Over time, the skate stops holding a sharp edge, and the comfort of skating decreases.

You can restore the shape of the blade in specialized services. Well, for those who are used to doing everything themselves, skate sharpening machines will come to the rescue.

Sharpening feature

The majority of people who rent skates from time to time believe that the runner of the skate has a smooth sliding surface. But that's not true. The inside of the blade is shaped like a groove. Its depth differs for different sports. The deepest for speed skating is 4.5 mm, and the shallowest for figure skating is 2 mm. This shallow groove allows the figure skate to be stable and at the same time perform various maneuvers.

Modern hockey skates use more than just a U-shaped blade profile. There are two more varieties:

  1. V. Has the shape of a trapezoid. Gives skates good maneuverability and stability. Often used in US hockey associations. It appeared in Russia recently. A significant disadvantage is the rapid loss of cutting properties of the edge.
  2. Channel-Z It is a square profile inside a round groove, the radius of which depends on the weight of the athlete. Improved speed properties are achieved by reducing the contact area of the blade with the ice and reducing the friction force.

It is precisely because the surface of the blade has a complex shape that conventional sharpening machines become unsuitable for sharpening such skates.

Manual sharpening method at home

If you don't skate often, you can make your own skate sharpening machine.

To do this, you will need a round needle file or a thin file and a wooden block 10-15 cm long. A groove 2-2.5 cm deep is cut into the wood, into the inner part of which a file is inserted. The width of the cut should ensure clear fixation of the tool inside. That is, during operation it should not move along its axis.

After installing the file, you can start sharpening. To do this, the cutting edge of the ridge is inserted into the groove of the block. Lightly pressing on the device, you need to move it along the blade. Thus, by removing the metal layer, the file will form the desired profile.

After sharpening, burrs remain that need to be removed with a flat file.

Prosharp equipment

The choice of skate sharpening machine will be determined by factors such as frequency of use, power, and versatility. If you plan to use it for individual purposes, then an inexpensive, low-power machine will do. If a device is needed for business, then the main criteria will be reliability, serviceability and universal use, that is, the ability to set a profile of any shape.

Prosharp skate sharpening machines are well suited for professional use. These devices are compact in size and light in weight up to 15 kg. But at the same time, they can perform 5 sharpening options that will satisfy both hockey players and figure skating enthusiasts.

The blade is securely fixed in the frame and is automatically centered. The built-in vacuum cleaner removes abrasive and steel particles generated during operation. Several different patterns relieve the operator of the need to carefully monitor the accuracy and correctness of sharpening.

The equipment comes complete with diamond pencils, which are used to restore the profile of the grinding wheel. As additional consumables, Prosharp offers bars for removing large burrs, devices for straightening the blade, and a device for controlling the height of the ridge ribs.

Skate sharpening machine Smm

When there is a choice between an inexpensive price and a high-quality sharpener, the scales tip in favor of lightweight professional devices. One of these is the Ssm 2 skate sharpening machine, which embodies one of the popular operating schemes.

An electric motor with an abrasive wheel on the shaft is mounted on a small frame in a vertical position. A runner holder is attached to the body. It is a movable clamp in which the skate blade is in the same plane with the abrasive wheel. A mount for the vacuum cleaner hose is also installed here.

To ensure that the abrasive disk does not change its shape, there is a clamp on the opposite side for a diamond pencil, which corrects the shape of the circle during operation. The weight of this skate sharpening machine is 1.3 kg and the power is 250 W.

Basic mistakes when sharpening

Modern devices have greatly simplified the sharpening process. However, if you do not use the adjustments of the skate sharpening machine correctly, this can lead to the following defects:

  1. The inner and outer sides of the blade are different in height, which leads to a loss of balance when skating. A similar flaw occurs when the position of the blade relative to the abrasive wheel is not observed.
  2. Varying groove depths along the blade. This happens if you press unevenly on the blade while sharpening. In addition, the edge may overheat, causing it to quickly lose its sharpness.
  3. Incorrect profile radius. As mentioned earlier, the depth of the groove is selected according to the weight of the hockey player. A profile that is too deep will lead to loss of maneuverability, and a shallow one will result in a decrease in speed.

Conclusion

To summarize, we can say that not every blade profile can be restored at home. In addition, professionals recommend sharpening more often, but at the same time removing less metal, which will allow the skates to last longer.

Wheels for sharpening skates. Which ones are better to choose?

How to make your own skate sharpening machine

01 February 2019

In order for you to be able to skate freely on ice, you need to pay special attention to the blades. A lot depends on the correctness of the sharpening procedure: how you will gain acceleration, whether you will be able to brake in time, how well the complex elements of the program will be completed.

Proper sharpening of the blades makes it possible to maintain maximum stability on ice. You need to perform the procedure when your riding speed is lost, you are unable to brake quickly, or you feel slippage while riding. Skate blades that are not sharpened or sharpened correctly can pose a significant threat to human health. It is very important to know the features and correct sharpening of skates depending on the design of the blade.

Mostly, standard sharpening is used on skates of inexpensive models for amateurs. Self-sharpening is only suitable if these are ordinary indoor skates with a smooth blade without a groove.

But if you have good and high-quality skates with runners that have grooves and grooves, then it is better to contact a specialist. In order not to harm the skates, and, therefore, yourself and others. Sharpening is carried out by special services or qualified specialists. They have professional grinding machines that carry out the sharpening process in great detail for all types of skates.

What types of machines are there and what are the differences between skate sharpening discs?

1. There are 2 most popular types of discs for sharpening skates: for Prosharp machines (size 150x6x20), and for SSM machines (size 150x6x38).

For 20 and 38 fits - a 20 mm bore diameter is used on Prosharp machines, a 38 mm standard is used on SSM, Bravo and other machines. Sharpening of the groove is easily carried out on semi-automatic machines such as SSM or automatic PROSHARP in the shape of a semicircle inward.

The most important thing when performing is to match the depth of the groove relative to the weight of the person and his riding style, depending on how light or aggressive it is.

2. Select the grit of the sharpening wheels to be 90 or finer, depending on the material of the skate blades.

3. It is advisable to use sharpening wheels made of white electrocorundum 25A, because 64C silicon carbide can damage skates due to the appearance of scale.

Prombay Abrasive offers you wheels for sharpening  skates from the Luga Abrasive Plant (Luga Abrasive).

Grinding wheel 1 150 x 6 x 32 25A (specify grain size)

Grinding wheel 1 150 x 6 x 38 25A (specify grain size).

Grinding wheels 25A

Corundum grinding wheels are the most popular because they are mainly designed for processing softer metals. This wheel is suitable for sharpening axes, scissors, as well as for processing ordinary steel (angles and other products). These wheels are also in demand for sharpening skates. Most often, electrocorundum circles are white and marked 25 A.

On such a wheel, when turning ordinary metal, a fairly high-quality sharpening is obtained, because the composition of the wheel is quite soft, during friction the temperature is low, because of this blue scale does not appear on the metal, and if it is not there, then the metal retains its properties perfectly. And this applies, first of all, to cutting objects, such as knives, because it is quite important not to overheat the metal when sharpening. Therefore, an alumina grinding wheel is an excellent choice for the home.

Grinding wheels 64C

Green grinding wheels made of silicon carbide are designed for processing hard alloys (brazing on hammer drills) and tool steel. This material has an increased resistance to abrasion; when sharpening, the temperature is quite high, so if you try to sharpen a home kitchen knife with this circle, then, of course, you will ruin it due to the instantaneous appearance of scale on the knife blade.

This wheel is usually used only for sharpening tools made of special tool steel (P18, P6M6, with the addition of cobalt to steel and hard alloys T15K10, T15K6, BK8). It is not very convenient to sharpen a hard alloy, so you need to use the finest grain of an abrasive wheel, choose a 25A white wheel, or find an alternative from a diamond tool, which is much more expensive. The marking of such a circle is 64C, and the dimensions are exactly the same as those of electrocorundum.

What is the difference between a high-quality disc and a low-quality one?

The main difference is balancing - uniform distribution of mass across the disk. A well-balanced skate sharpening disc will not create vibrations during sharpening and will provide the sharpest and most even sharpening possible. We also recommend using a balancing washer to completely eliminate disc runout!

How many sharpenings is enough for one sharpening disc?

On average, one skate sharpening disc is enough for 50-80+ pairs of skates (the number is approximate). The disk life depends primarily on the skills of the master sharpener, as well as on how often and how much you have to change the disk profile during operation.

For example, the consumption of a sharpening disc will be much greater if the straight profile of the disc is converted into a convex one, and then again into a straight one, than if one simply gradually updates the existing straight or convex profile of the disc.

This situation is possible if you sharpened your skates to a flat surface, and the next client asked you to sharpen them to a groove, or vice versa.

It is very important to do everything correctly and accurately. Wrong movement and the blade is damaged. Professional players can easily determine whether sharpening is needed or not. How? Yes, very simple.

If, upon inspection of the blade, it is clear that it is a little “clogged”, that is, its edge is not sharp, then at the moment of the push the repulsion will not be as it should be. A professional feels that the skate is slipping instantly. There is another way.

Run your fingernail along the edge of the blade. If it touches, there is no need to sharpen it; the surface is smooth, it needs to be sharpened.

On average, it takes an experienced craftsman from 5 to 10 minutes to sharpen one pair of skates. It all depends on the degree of sharpening of the blades. After using the machine, you will have to do a little manual work: run an abrasive stone over the blade to remove burrs or scratches from the metal surface; some craftsmen coat the blade with a special liquid that contains diamond dust. This makes the blade sharper and smoother.

Try to perform all actions carefully: wear safety glasses and protective clothing, and work with gloves. Hold the skate tightly so that it does not fly out of your hands. It turned out that sharpening skates is a very spectacular “event.” its component is sparks, the flight path of which is unpredictable. Please note that the circle must rotate away from you, otherwise sparks will fly straight into your eyes!

How to choose a machine for sharpening skates - Ideas for business

The “platform” of the blade is the contact patch between the blade and the ice. It is important that the “platform” is the same on the right and left skate.

On the automatic machine "PROSHARP" there is a gradation of the length of the "platform" from 4 cm to 6 cm.

Individual selection of a “site” is carried out only experimentally. It depends on several factors:

  • athlete's weight;
  • riding style;
  • ice hardness.

The length of the “platform” affects speed, stability, and maneuverability. Each athlete finds the optimal ratio between the length of the “platform” and the depth of the trench.

“Radius” is a reduced contact patch between the blade and the ice. Allows you to increase your riding maneuverability. On the automatic machine "PROSHARP" there is a gradation of radius sizes from 3.5 to 4.3. The size of the “radius” is also selected individually for each player.

Usually the platform (radius) is machined exactly in the middle of the blade, but some players move the platform (radius) forward or backward, depending on their role or individual skating style.

Sharpening the pad or radius is not necessary, but it will help achieve better riding comfort and results.

If you have sharpened the “Platform” or “Radius” , the craftsmen do not advise subsequently sharpening the skates on hand-held machines. This can change the geometry of the blade.

The blade profile is the shape of the angles of the blade. The profile is machined to provide better maneuverability and depending on the individual wishes of the player.

Profile and Site (radius) are separate types of work.

Complete preparation of new blades is:

  • PROFILE;
  • SITE or RADIUS ;
  • GUTTER point .

Such preparation is not mandatory for every player, but it allows for greater comfort and results when skating. Moreover, the ratio of the parameters of such training may be different for each player and reflects his individual qualities (weight, height, skating style).

If you have had a “PROFILE”, “PLATE” or “RADIUS” made, the craftsmen do not advise subsequently sharpening your skates on hand-held machines. This can change the geometry of the blade.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  What is metal hardness

Why and how to sharpen skates

A groove is machined into the blade along its length, which is necessary for lateral stability during maneuvers, braking, and repulsion.

On an automatic machine (PROSHARP) there is a gradation of groove depth (from 40 to 6), where 40 is straight sharpening, and 6 is the deepest groove. The average gutter is considered to be 12-15. Individual selection of gutter is carried out only experimentally. It depends on several factors:

  • athlete's weight
  • riding style
  • ice hardness

Usually they start trying with the middle one, and with each subsequent sharpening you can change the groove up or down. This is the only way to find your groove number and sharpen it with each new sharpening.

Masters advise sharpening not a deep groove, but more often, while during the sharpening process as little iron as possible is removed, and the quality of sliding is better.

Thermoforming

Its meaning is to match the shoe as closely as possible to the shape of the owner’s foot.

It is not a means to adapt any skates to any foot, but serves to finally adjust boots that are known to fit, and reduce the time of getting used to them, without bumps, calluses, and other similar troubles.

To do this, the design of the boot includes a layer of thermoplastic material (plastic or foam), which softens when heated and hardens again when cooled.

Manufacturers recommend molding skates like this:

  • After preliminary fitting, the skates are placed in a special oven, where they are heated for several minutes so that the thermoplastic material in them softens. In this case, you should loosen the lacing as much as possible so that your foot fits in very easily when putting on the shoes;
  • after warming up, the boots become soft and flexible;
  • removed from the oven;
  • putting on shoes;
  • They don't lace up much. In this case, you should place your feet on the heel, tighten the laces from beginning to end tightly, but without over-tightening;
  • You need to sit in hot skates (10-15 minutes) while the thermal layer cools down and “remembers” its new shape. You should not stand up in hot skates, so as not to deform the glass and shoe of the skate;
  • After 10–15 minutes, the skates should be unlaced as tightly as possible so that they can be easily removed from the feet.

The result is a boot that does not require lengthy break-in and getting used to, fits well, does not press, and does not rub. In principle, the molding process is repeated, and in special cases it is possible to mold not the entire boot, but a separate zone. There are special tools for this.

Thermoformable skates require compliance with certain care rules, for example, they cannot be dried near heating or heating devices, and in general, after molding, heating the boot above 40-45 degrees should be avoided.

Which machine to choose for sharpening your own skates?

Domestic industry and foreign manufacturers produce various devices for sharpening skates. With the help of these simple devices, you can completely restore the sharpness and original shape of the blade, regardless of what its profile is - rectangular or grooved. The machines are equipped with special equipment that allows abrasive processing of several types of blades: W, R, V and U.

Typically, sharpening machines for skates have a set of equipment, which includes:

  • a universal type holder that clamps the blade using cams or screws;
  • a device for collecting metal dust from the turning zone, operating on the principle of a vacuum cleaner;
  • discs of abrasive composition, including a diamond wheel or pencil for restoring abrasive discs that have become rounded during operation.

To ensure smooth movement of the working tool along the blade, the machine uses a special rotary lever supported by bearings.

When deciding for yourself which skate sharpening machine to buy, you need to analyze the performance qualities and capabilities of various types of similar equipment and then, having also compared their cost, settle on one.

Grinding machines from PROSHARP. The Prosharp skate sharpening machine is professional equipment that allows you to use five different processing cycles in your work. This versatility makes it possible to use the Prosharp machine to perform both processing of figured blades and sharpening of hockey skates.

Mention should be made of the well-known manufacturer of Prosharp machines designed for sharpening skates.

PROSHARP products are known to all ice sports specialists. This is high-tech equipment that allows for fast and accurate processing of blades of any profile. The automated operating mode makes the operation easy and fast.

You can use such a device in a small business environment right next to a city skating rink or sports stadium. Taking into account the electronic control of the process, the price of this company’s products is higher than that of other manufacturers and is now equal to 300,000 rubles.

Make a machine yourself

Not every person, even if he takes his first steps in business this way, can afford to spend even 100,000 rubles on it. In this case, you can search through advertisements for sales of used sharpening machines. You can buy a used skate sharpening machine without much fear that it will break down.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  How to cut a thread with a cutter on a lathe

After all, the only thing that can cause alarm is the serviceability of the electric motor. But checking the engine is simple - turn it on and put at least one load on the working tool. If at the same time the speed decreases slightly, and there is no smell of burnt windings from the engine, then there is nothing to fear.

Another way out is to figure out in detail how to make a machine for sharpening skates with your own hands and get down to business.

The starting materials are brass or aluminum pipes of different diameters and a sharpening stone with a diameter of 25 mm. You will also need a bench vice and a hacksaw with a drill. Pipes are needed with diameters: one is 25 mm, the other is smaller, but so that it fits closely into it.

We take a pipe that fits tightly inside the other and cut off 10 mm from one edge with a grinder or a hand-held machine. We make 2 such plugs.

  1. Taking a pipe of larger diameter, we cut a longitudinal groove in it and insert an abrasive stone with plugs on both sides into it.
  2. We drill the pipe in the transverse direction with a drill so that the drillings go between the stone and the plugs, then we tighten the entire structure with screws that will prevent it from falling apart.
  3. We adjust the structure using a file, setting sufficient removal so that the stone will extend beyond the plugs on the sides.
  4. We grind the plugs using a file, regularly taking measurements using a ruler.
  5. To securely fix the stone in the pipe, we strengthen it with superglue.
  6. We cover the top of the parts with silicone plumbing compound.

This homemade skate sharpening machine allows you to manually process skates by making repeated sliding movements of the blade on the stone. But its productivity is low and it can only give the blade a rectangular shape.

A more optimal option would be a device that contains an electric motor with a flange for attaching an abrasive wheel. But we must not forget about safety precautions. The outer diameter circle must be protected from dangerous scattering of its fragments in the event of sudden destruction. You will also need equipment firmly connected to the engine housing, which will allow you to set a fixed position of the skate blade relative to the circle.

Consumables for sharpening machine

The only consumables for sharpening are abrasive wheels and diamond pencils. Consumables can be easily purchased through a network of online stores or in ordinary sports equipment stores.

Abrasive wheels for sharpening skates come in various hardnesses and grain sizes. In color they come in white, blue and pink. Color is not a determining parameter, since circles of the same color can have either a fine-grained structure or a coarse-grained one.

Features of working on skate sharpening machines

Modern sport is high-tech. The result often depends not only on the athlete’s preparation, but on the condition of his equipment. The quality of sharpening affects the stability, reduction of friction, speed and maneuverability of the athlete. Skates for speed skaters, figure skaters and hockey players are sharpened using special machines. There is equipment that allows you to sharpen any type of skates, as well as specialized equipment, for example, only for hockey skates.

Machine design

Professional skate sharpening machine

The skate sharpening machine has a fairly simple design. The main elements of which:

  • electric motor;
  • frame;
  • blade fixation plate;
  • claw holder;
  • frame holder;
  • diamonds for round and flat surfaces;
  • cam clamp;
  • protective box;
  • connector for connecting a vacuum cleaner.

A universal skate sharpening machine creates a flat surface on the blade and creates a groove along the axis. The difference between universal and specialized devices is in the form of a retainer. The holder should hold both hockey and figure skates equally firmly. A screw fastening is provided for this purpose.

To prevent dust from flying around the workshop, it is removed with any vacuum cleaner connected to a special connector.

The device comes with a pair of diamond pencils of various shapes. The first creates a special rounded profile of the edge of the circle that forms the groove. Another pencil forms the rectangular edge of the circle for sharpening a flat surface. There are machine models on which you can pre-grind the blade profile and then sharpen it.

Sharpening stages

Sharpening skates properly requires skill. This is quite easy to learn. Sharpening occurs in several stages.

  1. The edge of the circle for sharpening must be brought to the required shape; for this there is a diamond pencil. Its type is selected depending on what edge shape is needed.
  2. The skate is fixed in the “paw”. Its blade is fixed by the cam mechanism of the clamp. It slides into the clamp from the right, forward with the bow. The fastener is located near the toe. Thanks to the paw, the blade is installed parallel to the plane of the disc. The paw holds the skate suspended, freeing the master’s hands.
  3. Adjusting the reference plane. This is where the blade is placed during processing. The level of the insert in relation to the sharpening wheel determines the location of the groove on the blade. Sometimes the blades are slightly bent, then the bar is replaced with rollers (they are usually included in all models of machines). Using a roller, you can adjust the position of the boot and sharpen curved skates quite accurately. It is preferable to clamp good and even blades with a bar, which allows you to absolutely clearly align the tool and blade.

Sharpening process

  1. Turn on the skate sharpening machine;
  2. When the movement of the circle reaches a stationary mode, we apply the blade to the circle and slowly move the skate to the left against the movement of the disk along its edge;
  3. We repeat the movement 2-3 times, adjusting the shape of the groove and the position of the blade;
  4. If necessary, adjust the position of the support bar again.

It is advisable to carry out the first sharpening experience on old blades that you don’t mind. You can practice on a metal strip of suitable thickness. Most often, it is enough to sharpen only 3 - 4 pairs to confidently cope with this task.

Consumables and machine accessories

Skate sharpening machines are equipped with a minimum set for work. You can expand their capabilities with the help of additional devices:

  • holders. They can be universal for hockey skates, including goalie, speed skating and figure skates. Or they can be specialized for only one sport;
  • grinding discs. They vary in color and wear resistance. The size of the discs must match the machine model. The outer diameter of the discs is usually 150 mm, the inner diameter is 38 mm;
  • adapters for a circle from a larger diameter to a smaller one;
  • diamond pencils for groove and plane;
  • whetstones for removing metal burrs from blades after sharpening.

Some machines additionally come with templates that make it easier to sharpen profiles.

Proper sharpening of skates is a problem that worries every person closely connected with the world of sports or ice skating. Comfortable gliding, a strong connection with ice for stability and the safety of the athlete depend on the quality of the sharpness and shape of the blade.

Skate sharpening devices are manufactured all over the world, and well-known and high-quality models can be found in both domestic and foreign industries. Various devices can easily restore the blade to its original shape and sharpness. Most of them are suitable for any profile used for riding or sports.

Machine equipment

Today, any manual machine for sharpening skate blades comes complete with special devices that allow you to properly sharpen the most common types of blades. A typical machine kit consists of the following components, which can be useful not only for professionals, but also for amateurs:

  1. Holder. A universal device that allows you to clamp the skate blade using special screws or other components. Essential for safe and more precise sharpening.
  2. Dust removal device. Metal dust will appear when sharpening in large quantities. It can be hazardous if inhaled, and the small particles make the dust difficult to remove. The device operates on the principle of a vacuum cleaner, quickly collecting all the dust while sharpening the blade.
  3. Devices for editing. To profile and clean abrasive grinding wheels, you must have a profiling diamond wheel or a special diamond pencil. The stropping attachment allows you to sharpen skates to different groove shapes and makes the sharpening process much easier.
  4. Knee support. It is necessary to ensure that the blade runs straight along the sharpening stone. Thanks to the bearings built into the knees, the sharpening process is smooth and careful, leaving no nicks or scratches on the blade and making it as sharp as possible.

Choosing a machine for sharpening skates

For someone new to the world of ice rinks and skates, choosing a sharpening machine can be difficult.

Before making a decision to purchase a particular device, you need to decide on the purpose of its use - at a professional or amateur level.

Will the machine be used only for personal purposes or will it become part of a business? For each purpose, special sharpening equipment is suitable, which has its own operating qualities and specifics, dimensions and capabilities. After this, you can examine several manufacturing companies.

One of the most famous companies producing machines for processing skate blades is PROSHARP. This manufacturer is known for its professional automatic equipment models that can process skate blades using several cycles at once. The machines are used in many ice arenas, both for sports competitions and for sharpening amateur skates.
