How to make a pipe bender from bearings

How to make a pipe bender from bearings

Bent parts made from round or profile pipes are widely used in the installation of pipelines, decorative finishing, construction of greenhouses, greenhouses, canopies, gazebos and garages. It’s not difficult to make a pipe bender with your own hands; you can use one of the industrial tools or machines as a sample, look for a drawing of a working pipe bender on the Internet, or, having studied in detail the operating principle and design features, create your own version.

Why is it worth it

All three ways to make a simple pipe bender with your own hands are effective and accessible to anyone who has plumbing skills, knows how to work with electric welding and read technical drawings. In a small metalworking workshop or metalworking shop, building a homemade pipe bender is all the more easy - if you have specialists from different fields, you can make the tool in one day.

Why a homemade pipe bender is relevant for industrial enterprises will be understood by everyone when they see the prices for factory-made machines. When you assemble a pipe bending machine yourself, even if you have to buy all the parts on the market or in a store, it will cost several times less than when purchased. Moreover, a pipe bender made by yourself can be maximally adapted to your needs by making changes to the basic drawings, according to the specifics of its future use.

Main types of pipe benders

A homemade pipe bending machine can be made according to one of four main types:

Each of these machines has its own application features and scope of use, so the choice of device depends on the intended application. For example, a roller rolling pipe bender is indispensable for bending copper and thin-walled steel pipes.

It is produced in a stationary version, as in the video, or in a completely manual version, which can be used in weight.

A mobile pipe bender is especially convenient when installing heating or water supply systems - you can take it with you to the site or take it outside. It does not take up much space in a plumber’s or welder’s suitcase and its weight is quite acceptable - 1-2 kg.

Homemade roller pipe bender

This tool allows you to bend pipes at an angle of 180 0 with a small radius, which depends on the diameter of the pipe and is determined using a special table. The radius can be adjusted by replacing the support roller. This operation must be provided for when making a pipe bender with your own hands.

The third position in the table shows the length from the cut of the pipe when bending from its edge. When bending a pipe at any point along its length, only the first two numbers are relevant.

Before you make a roller-type pipe bender at home, you need to look at a typical drawing and photo of a factory pipe bender. Having compared the information, it is advisable to develop your own technological scheme and begin production.

Instead of a support roller, it is more convenient to use only half of it, a segment. Thus, the tool turns out lighter with the same capabilities.

Pipe bender for large radii

You can make an arc for a greenhouse or canopy, a top for a forged fence, or even a ring using a roller rolling machine with two support rollers and one pressure roller. It is recommended to watch the video on how a pipe bender works before starting construction.

Like a rolling machine, making such a pipe bending machine with your own hands for profile pipes is not particularly difficult. Drawings and schematic diagrams of the machines are available on the Internet and relevant literature.

You can find here both manual and electric, stationary and mobile.

The schematic diagram and working indicative drawing are given below. As with the rolling machine, the dimensions can be changed to suit your needs. Rollers are purchased ready-made or turned on a lathe from durable steel. For copper and brass pipes, they can be made from durable wood such as oak or beech. This machine can bend both profile and round pipes.

Crossbow pipe benders

A do-it-yourself rod pipe bender, detailed drawings of which will be given below, can be made using either a hydraulic car jack or a mechanical screw clamping system. In the first case, it will be possible to work with steel pipes of almost any diameter and a wall thickness of more than 2 mm. In the second - with steel, copper and any pipes made of non-ferrous metals with a diameter of no more than 32 mm.

The jack can be installed with any load capacity - from 5 to 15 tons, as required by the intended type of activity and financial capabilities.

Bottle-type jacks with a lifting capacity of over 5 tons are quite expensive; buying them for use in a home workshop, where bending is done from time to time, is not economically feasible.

But for a workshop or workshop - the more powerful the jack, the better. There is always a job for him, if not as part of a pipe bender, then definitely under a car.

A crossbow pipe bender is structurally limited in terms of bending angle - it can only bend a pipe up to an angle of 90 0 . If a larger angle is required, you can bend the workpiece using a lever or winch, but in this case you will need a support punch or template made of metal or wood.

When bending thin-walled pipes, there is a risk of deformation of the internal sections of the walls. This threat can be eliminated by filling the pipe with dry, fine sand and plugging the end holes. Similar technology is used in mandrel pipe benders and in the manufacture of coils. Thick-walled pipes bend more easily, but even here support is required in the form of a template or a metal segment. The appearance of a crossbow pipe bender fully reveals its operation pattern.

Industrial and homemade pipe benders of this type in the photo:

Industrial models of hydraulic pipe benders are equipped with a set of punches of various radii and groove widths. It is not difficult to replace them at work. They are made of durable tool steel and do not deform during bending, ensuring high radius accuracy.

You can buy factory-made punches in any size for a homemade hydraulic pipe bender. Just don't skimp when purchasing. If you choose inexpensive Chinese tools, you can end up with rather flimsy supports, which are quite good when bending copper and non-ferrous pipes, but are completely unsuitable for steel, especially stainless steel.

You can use old pulleys cut in half along the diameter as a punch. This operation is quite labor-intensive, but can be done even at home. You can find a pulley of a suitable diameter and groove width in markets, stores, the Internet, or even at scrap metal collection points. Their price, as a rule, is not very high and, compared to a jack, is very reasonable.

Support rollers, as for rolling pipe benders, are either manufactured independently or ready-made ones are adapted. If a large amount of work is expected, it is advisable to install them on bearings - rolling friction in this case will give a gain in work speed.

A working drawing can be made based on the following drawing:

It should be noted that crossbow pipe benders can work in both horizontal and vertical positions. But to convert the bend line to horizontal, standard car jacks need to be modified. Standard ones are intended for vertical use only and will not work even at an inclination of more than 45 0 .

In tool stores you can buy crossbow jacks for plumbing purposes for bending copper and thin-walled steel pipes. They are designed to be held horizontally and in many cases can be operated with one hand. Many types of crossbow pipe benders are equipped with a mechanical rather than hydraulic drive. When working with non-ferrous metals, the force on the rod is quite enough even for bending pipes up to 30 mm in diameter.

Templates and springs

If pipe bending is done from time to time or is a one-time operation, for example, when building a greenhouse in a country house or a carport, porch or gazebo, then there is no need to build a complex pipe bender. A round or profile pipe can be bent with a sufficient degree of accuracy on a template with a minimum of effort.

In this way, you can bend pipes of a fairly decent radius without the risk of deformation of the inner surface. If the pipe is thick-walled, then a winch or a jack through a lever can be used as a traction device. But to work with pipes up to 40 mm, as a rule, the muscular effort of an average person is enough. The template can be used in both horizontal and vertical positions.

Making homemade pipe benders is a simple and relatively short operation. No special financial costs will be required, except for the purchase of a jack. But even in this case, a DIY tool will cost much less than a purchased one.

How to make a pipe bender: homemade do-it-yourself options with video - Machine

Not only industrial specialists have to bend profile and round pipes, but also craftsmen at home. For one-time use, it is enough to contact the employees of the metalworking shop. But it’s even better to know how to make a pipe bender with your own hands if you have to transform many identical sections, for example, to build a greenhouse or covered shed.

The operating principle of these devices is based on the laws of mechanics. If you delve into the design features of any mechanism for obtaining a workpiece of a certain curvature, it is obvious that there is nothing complicated about them.

What types of devices are there for transforming pipes?

  • Transforming the curvature of a thin-walled pipe of small diameter is a completely accessible stage in obtaining metal blanks for frame-type structures.
  • It is enough to look at the drawings and photos of pipe benders, and it will become obvious that structurally they have a lot in common:
  • base (support, emphasis);
  • frame or frame (open or closed);
  • strips, pipe stops or holders;
  • screws or vice for fastening;
  • injection, mechanical or operating device (alternative power part).

Important: To constantly work with flexible profile pipes, you need a hydraulic pipe bender, which greatly facilitates the process of forming the curvature of the desired radius.

  1. The forming of aluminum, standard steel and metal-plastic pipes can be done using the simplest manual template-type device.
  2. Most pipe benders resemble a compact machine, but they have their own classification:
  • by type of impact on pipes (running, winding, drawing, rolling);
  • moving if possible (stationary and portable).

The drive type is also different:

  • electric;
  • manual;
  • hydraulic;
  • electrohydraulic.

If you use an electric drive or a hydraulic jack, it will take on the entire power load, saving time and effort. But its construction requires at least basic knowledge and experience in constructing household machines for metal processing. But such devices are several times cheaper than ready-made devices and their repeated rental.

Important: When making a manual pipe bender with your own hands, drawings, a few simple parts and an understanding of the operating principle are enough.

The most popular and simplest in design are manual pipe benders of the template type. By bending around a profile or regular pipe along part of its circumference, a section of pipe is transformed at a given angle or the required curvature.

How to make different types of pipe benders?

The principle of operation of pipe benders is different - you can influence a section of pipe in different ways. For example, a spring-type device will help deform polymer pipes due to pressure. Segmental devices will stretch them, giving them curvature.

The method of making a template pipe bender is accessible even to a beginner. To do this, you need to accurately draw a part of a circle of the required diameter (or other type of curvature). This hemisphere or other curve is drawn on a wooden blank, as in the photo of a homemade template-type pipe bender.

  • The resulting part must be fixed on a stable base along the plane (wall, table).

Attention: the wooden shield for the round template must be wider than the pipe that surrounds it, so that the attached part does not come off during processing. The pipe must pass between the stop fixed at the base and the template.

After the template stop is ready, you need to figure out how to use a pipe bender of this type. This is clear from the drawing - the pipe is secured between the template and the thrust beam.

By exposing the opposite end to a heated aluminum or thin steel billet, the desired bend is obtained. If it is necessary to obtain segments of different curvature, several suitable templates are made.

Pipe bender options

Another way is to obtain a segment of the required circle using metal hooks nailed to a plane, as in the photo. This is the cheapest bending method, however, you need reliable hooks and a pliable pipe. The advantage of this device is that these hooks can always be broken along a different line in order to bend workpieces of a different radius.

Pipe benders for converting profile pipes are much more complicated - they require more force to deform. But with a powerful device with pressure rollers, not inferior to its hydraulic counterpart, in everyday conditions you can obtain any curvature, even an ideal circle.

  1. Bending of the workpiece is carried out using rollers and a cylinder - winding or rolling is performed, and the cylinder moves freely.
  2. To build a pipe bender, you need parts as in the drawing - plates and angles, a stop and a handle.
  3. To learn how to make a more complex type of pipe bender, watch the video.

Pipe bender for copper pipes

The design of spring devices is extremely simple. The active element in them is a very strong steel spring with coils that fit tightly to each other. The stiffness of the spring will not allow the copper pipe to come off, deform or break inside the equipment. When the pipe is bent at a certain angle, the steel spring is turned out, moving to another free place.

The main condition for ensuring even bending is that the dimensions of the spring and pipe match.

The main advantages of a spring manual pipe bender:

The tool is lightweight and versatile.

They can work in conditions of limited space. If the path of part of the pipeline needs to be changed, there is no need to dismantle part of the system to transport it to the machine. A spring pipe bender will be able to shape a part located on a workbench. A spring manual pipe bender can give any shape to a copper pipe without restrictions, while keeping the product from bending into an acute angle. The device very carefully shapes pipeline elements.

Disadvantages of spring pipe benders:

  1. This device is convenient to work only with short pipeline lengths. There are no degree marks; bending is done “by eye.”

Using a spring of suitable diameter, a copper pipe can be bent quickly and without damage

Manual Lever Pipe Bender for Copper Pipe

The next type of tool, a lever pipe bender for copper pipes, has two levers in its design. One of them has a shoe, and the second is equipped with a bending template. Both levers have bending marks, thanks to which you can adjust the angle of deformation.

To place the pipe in the lever tool, you need to move the handles apart.

After making sure that the pipe lies flat in the grooves of the template, you should fix it with a bracket. The lever with the shoe is placed so that the zero marks on it and on the template coincide. With a smooth movement, the lever rotates to the desired bend angle.

Advantages of a lever pipe bender for copper pipe:

  1. Light weight, compact and affordable price. Allows you to bend a copper product without much physical effort. The maximum bending angle is 180 degrees, which is quite enough for household needs.

Disadvantages of a lever pipe bender:

  1. A manual pipe bender is useless when working with large-sized products. The tool cannot be used for bending pipes of other diameters.

How to make your own pipe bender

If necessary, you can make an effective manual pipe bender with your own hands.

The simplest device can be easily made on the basis of a concrete slab. Additionally, you only need a hammer drill and a certain number of steel pins. Markings are made on the slab in the form of a grid with cells of 4x4 or 5x5 cm. Deep holes are drilled in the grid nodes, after which pins are fixed in them. The pipe bender is ready.

Next, the copper pipe is placed between the pins and carefully bent in the required direction. By moving the product between the pins, you can change the bending radius.

The next device is structurally more complex and already looks like a real pipe bender. First of all, a base is made, for which a strong iron pipe of rectangular cross-section with a wall thickness of at least 3 mm is best suited. Stepping back 2-3 cm from one edge, a hole is made. Its diameter must match the size of the main pulley.

To calculate the length of the base, you need to determine the maximum bend radius that the pipe bender will be capable of and add 5 cm to this indicator. Cut off the excess part of the pipe. The stopper for bent pipes will be made in the form of a pin. There will be a nut at one end and a T-shaped element at the other.

Next, we proceed to making the pipe bender handle. Iron plates with a thickness of 4 mm or more are ideal for this. The width of the plates must match the dimensions of the base.

After preparing all the elements of the future pipe bender, you can begin assembling the device. The base is firmly clamped in a vice, the pulley is inserted into the hole made, and the handles are fixed.

Some craftsmen independently assemble complex and functional hydraulic installations. For this, a hydraulic car jack, rollers, an iron channel, a shoe and steel fasteners are used. The most important point is the choice of rollers, since this part will ensure the correct fit of the pipe and, as a result, the quality of the bend.

Features of copper pipes and their application

Copper pipes are widely used in everyday life and in many areas of the national economy. This is explained by the impressive list of advantages that distinguish this material from plastic or iron analogues:

  • Good resistance to mechanical loads, impacts, bends.
  • Long service life, measured in tens of years.
  • Resistance to the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms, which makes copper pipelines the best option for supplying drinking water.
  • Ease of installation and service.
  • Resistance to plaque formation on the internal walls of the pipeline. During operation, the pipeline clearance does not decrease and blockages do not form.
  • Wide operating temperature range.
  • Low coefficient of thermal expansion.
  • Resistance to corrosion.

There are two types of copper pipes used in the construction of pipeline networks:

Annealed products are widely used; they bend easily and have good resistance to high temperatures, pressure or chemicals. But in terms of strength, such a pipe will be inferior to an unannealed one.

Unannealed products are more difficult to bend, and the bending radius should not be less than three pipe diameters.

What types of pipe benders are there?

Pipe bending devices differ in their design and intended purpose. They can be mechanical or portable manual.

For bending small-diameter tubes, the latter option is quite suitable. A manual pipe bender for copper pipes can cope with thin-walled products with a diameter not exceeding 50 mm (according to DU - two-inch pipes). To give the desired shape to the bend, physical effort must be made, which is the main disadvantage of the design. However, consumers are attracted by its affordable price and light weight.

Separately, we can distinguish electro-hydraulic or electric machines with CNC (computer numerical control). One of the software control functions will be bending of copper tubes, including small diameters. Of course, it is not worth purchasing such a machine for the sole purpose of bending pipes.

According to the bending mechanism, pipe benders can be divided into three groups:

Crossbow hand pipe bender.

The equipment has the shape of a crossbow weapon, and the bending itself occurs on the principle of pulling a bowstring. The required angle is given to the section of copper pipe using the template included with the crossbow device. Templates (forms) are supplied only in single copies, designed for a pipe of a certain diameter.

It will no longer be possible to bend a pipe with a diameter different from the template. This type of equipment will not be able to bend an angle greater than 90 degrees. A manual pipe bender is only suitable for small pipes with a diameter from 10 mm to 22 mm. Segment pipe benders.

The pipe is pulled out using a special segment. Visually, the device resembles a small machine for bending pipes with a diameter not exceeding 42 mm. The maximum bending angle for a segment machine is 180 degrees.

The segment has the shape of a half-disk and rotates using a handle. The copper product is bent around the segmented body at the desired angle. Mandrel machines. The principle of bending is to create a stressed state of uneven compression at the point of deformation.

As a result of this process, the ductility of copper (or any other metal) increases, the natural roughness of the walls decreases, and smooth circulation of the working medium in the pipe cavity is ensured.

The machine can be manual, semi-automatic, and sometimes fully automatic. Optimal operation of a manual mandrel machine is possible when the system is configured correctly.

Semi-automatic devices are capable of programming the deformation angle; some models independently provide stable lubrication of the mandrel for its movement inside the tube.

A crossbow-type pipe bender is a hand-held device

A pipe bending mandrel machine can be made by hand. The most important working elements for it will be a roller matrix (it is advisable to provide the ability to adjust the diameters), a front clamp corresponding to the diameter of the matrix, guides, mandrel mandrels and collet clamps for the mandrel.

The basis of the design will be a standard support frame that takes all the loads of the process. The drive for work is most often lever driven, but for more serious purposes hydraulic drives are used. Drawings of mandrel equipment can be found on the Internet.

Features of bending copper pipes on a pipe bender

A copper pipe, from the point of view of bending it on a pipe bending machine, has 2 states - soft and hard. Solid and semi-solid copper pipes have greater rigidity. During manufacturing, such pipes are subjected to heat treatment in order to increase performance characteristics - strength and ductility. Copper pipes without heat treatment (unannealed copper pipes) due to their rigidity are extremely difficult to bend even to a 3D radius.

Therefore, when bending copper pipes to bending radii less than 3D, soft pipes should be used, or even better, soft pipes of increased platicity, or hard and semi-hard copper pipes should be subjected to heat treatment - annealing. An annealed copper pipe is more ductile, but has lower hardness. It deforms (bends) well, but after bending it should be heat-strengthened. Due to the fact that copper does not differ in density from steel, but does not corrode, the wall thickness of pipes very rarely exceeds 1.5 - 2 mm.

Annealed copper pipes of small diameter (up to 38 mm) can be easily bent on BMK pipe bending machines to small radii (from 1.5 D) even without special equipment.

When bending annealed copper pipes with a diameter of over 38 mm on pipe benders, it is necessary to select the optimal bending radius with simple equipment, or to manufacture complex equipment. To bend such copper pipes, the equipment includes a special bending roller with a straight section, a crease smoother, and a flexible steel mandrel.

After bending on a pipe bending machine, it is desirable to thermally strengthen products made from annealed copper pipe, thus increasing their performance characteristics.

All round copper pipes are manufactured in accordance with GOST 817-2006 and have the following information in the designation:

The 1st letter determines the manufacturing method (D - cold-deformed, drawn or cold-rolled, G-pressed)

2nd and 3rd letters - pipe shape (KR-round)

4th letter - manufacturing accuracy (N, P, I, K, S, U)

5th letter - condition (M-soft, P-semi-hard, T-hard, L-soft with increased ductility, F-semi-hard with increased strength, H-hard with increased strength)

Next are dimensions D (diameter) and S (wall thickness), length, etc.

Special conditions for accuracy (T), curvature (O), tensile requirements (P), hardness requirements (H), coil winding conditions (BTH) - free winding, (BU) - ordered winding, (BS) - spiral winding, defined in GOST 817-2006.

Homemade pipe bender for profile pipes - diagram, drawings, video

Bending profile pipes is a fairly common procedure, for which a special device is used - a pipe bender. You can make a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands, or you can purchase it at the construction market or in a store.

One of the simplest types of pipe bender for profiled pipes

Serial devices differ in their operating principles, they may have different types of drives, but operating any of these devices requires some experience. The use of devices manufactured in production conditions is limited by the fact that they are not cheap. A good solution in all such situations would be to independently manufacture a device designed for bending profile pipes, for which you can use improvised means.

Required design elements

The operating diagram of a pipe bender is very simple

To make a pipe bender with your own hands, you can use drawings of various designs. Their choice is determined mainly by what materials you have. Most often they opt for front-type pipe benders, the design of which includes:

  • three rollers (shafts), which must be metal;
  • drive chain;
  • axes of rotation;
  • a mechanism that will set in motion all elements of the device;
  • metal profiles from which the frame of the device will be made.

Very often, a machine for bending profile pipes is made with rollers made of wood or polyurethane. When choosing such materials, you should take into account the strength characteristics of the pipes that will be subject to bending. If you neglect this requirement, then the working elements of the homemade device may simply not withstand the load and collapse.

Drawing of a pipe bender: the sectional view shows the mounting structure of the pressure roller

To understand how to bend a profile pipe on a homemade device, it is important to understand the technology used for this process. As a rule, pipe benders use the rolling or rolling principle, which minimizes the risk of kinking and damage to the pipe.

To make a bend on a profile pipe using such a device, it must be inserted between the rollers of the pipe bender and turn the handle. The use of such a simple bending device allows you to obtain bends on a profile pipe that fully comply with the specified parameters.

Pipe bender using a jack

To make a simple machine for bending profile pipes, you will need the following structural elements:

  • ordinary jack;
  • metal profiles and shelf necessary for making the frame;
  • springs with high strength;
  • shafts in the amount of 3 pieces;
  • drive chain;
  • a number of other structural elements.

When using such a device, the operation of which can be seen in one of the videos below, the pipe is laid on two side rollers, and a third one is lowered on top of it, creating the required force. To give the pipe the necessary bend, you need to rotate the handle that drives the chain and, accordingly, the equipment shafts.

Option with inverted jack

Pipe bender manufacturing process

To make a device for bending profile pipes, you must perform the following procedures.

  • Prepare a reliable frame, the elements of which are connected by welding and bolted connections.
  • Using a previously prepared drawing, install the axis of rotation and the shafts themselves, two of which are located above the third. The bending radius of the profile pipe depends on the distance at which the axes of such shafts are located.
  • To operate this bending mechanism, a chain drive is used. To complete such a transmission, it is equipped with three gears, and the chain itself can be picked up from an old car, motorcycle or other equipment.
  • To operate such equipment, a handle is needed that is connected to one of the shafts. It is through this handle that the required torque is created.

Instructions for making a pipe bender

Making a pipe bender for a profile pipe yourself is not at all difficult if you adhere to the following technological sequence.

  • Gears, bearings and rings are placed on the pressure shaft, which are connected to it using a key. First, a drawing of such a shaft, races for bearings and rollers is developed, then these parts are turned, which is best entrusted to a qualified turner. In total, for this device it is necessary to make three shafts, one of which is suspended on springs, and the other two are located on the sides.
  • Then it is necessary to drill holes in the rings, which are necessary for making grooves and threading.
  • Now you need to make a shelf, for which you use a channel, in which you also drill holes and cut the threads required when installing the pressure shaft.
  • After completing the preparatory measures, the entire structure of the equipment must be assembled, for which welding and bolted connections are used. First of all, the frame is installed, which also serves as the legs of the pipe bender.
  • The next step is to hang the shelf with the pressure shaft attached to it, for which springs are used. After this, you need to install side support shafts on the homemade pipe bender, on one of which a handle is attached.
  • The final touch is to install the jack on the pipe bender.

Some subtleties of installation work:

  • the pressure shaft, fixed with keys, is additionally screwed to the shelf;
  • installation of the pressure shaft is carried out according to the following scheme: the shaft is installed on a shelf to which nuts for the springs are pre-welded; after the installation work is completed, the shelf is turned over and suspended on the springs;
  • the chains are tensioned using a magnetic corner, which is used as a holder;
  • when tightening the sprockets, keys are used, which are pre-made from Grover;
  • the drive handle for the bending machine is made with a rotating tube;
  • The jack on such a homemade device is installed on a suspended platform, for which bolted connections and welding are used.

Manufacturing of hydraulic pipe bender

On the Internet you can find many photos and videos of how to make your own device for bending profile pipes with a hydraulic drive. The process of manufacturing such a pipe bender, equipped with a hydraulic cylinder, injection device and pipe stops, is a rather labor-intensive undertaking.

In the drawing and in the design of such a pipe bender, the following elements can be distinguished:

  • hydraulic jack with a lifting capacity of at least 5 tons;
  • shoe;
  • rollers in the amount of 2–3 pieces;
  • powerful metal channel;
  • thick metal plates and other parts.

To make the required bend of a profile pipe using a hydraulic device, it is necessary to insert it into the shoe and fix both ends. After this, you need to use a jack, which, with its rising rod, presses on the roller, which acts on the pipe and bends it. Once the required bend angle is obtained, the process can be stopped and the pipe can be removed from the pipe bender by turning the jack handle several times in the opposite direction.

Movable platform of the pressure shaft Installation of the shafts Chain with tensioner Assembled view

To make your own hydraulic bending device for profile pipes, a photo of which can be easily found on the Internet, you must follow the following procedures.

  • Based on the drawing or photo, a structure for mounting the shoe and rollers, as well as the equipment frame, are made.
  • A metal plate is attached to the lower platform on which the jack will be installed. After this, such a device is secured with bolts and a drive handle is installed on it.
  • The most important thing is to find suitable rollers for the profile pipe, which should tightly grip the working part. If desired, rollers for the profile pipe, which are installed on the channel at the same height, can be made with your own hands. The shoe is installed below the rollers, and their relative position is determined by the required bending radius.
  • To fix the rollers and shoe, bolts are used, the holes for which are made according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing.

Methods for bending pipes using a homemade machine

The question of how to bend a profile pipe using a homemade pipe bender is unlikely to confuse you if you read a few more recommendations. Hydraulic machines can be used to successfully bend profile pipes made of different materials, as well as thick-walled products. This operation can be performed using either a cold or hot method, which involves preheating the pipe section.

Thus, a manual hydraulic bending machine can be used to influence the pipe in two ways:

Another variation with a jack

Cold bending is the simplest bending method, which is used for pipes made of plastic materials. The subtlety of this process is to fill the pipe before the flexible pipe with sand, salt, oil or cold water. This allows you to get a better bend without significant deformation of the pipe.

If you are interested in the question of how to properly bend a profile pipe with thick walls or made from materials of increased rigidity, then the answer to this question is to use the hot bending method.

Useful tips

The question of how to bend a profile pipe as accurately as possible and without unnecessary labor costs will be answered by several useful tips from qualified specialists.

Removable rollers of different shapes will allow you to comfortably work not only with profile pipes, but also with round ones.

  • In manual pipe benders for bending profile pipes, you can not use sprockets, but assemble a structure based on one drive roller. Instead of a pressure screw, such pipe benders often use a jack.
  • If you are bending according to a template, then to prevent the pipe from sliding off it, you can use metal hooks as stops.
  • If you need to bend a profile pipe under a large radius, it is best to use a pipe bender with three rollers.
  • To get a more versatile bending machine, you can make its thrust rollers movable. This way you can change the bend radius of the pipe.

In the video below, the master shares his experience in building a pipe bender from scrap materials.

In order to strictly observe the dimensions of the required pipe bend, it is best to perform this operation using a template made of wood. Even the simplest manual pipe bender using such a template will allow you to bend a profile pipe with precise compliance with the specified parameters. By the way, such templates are mainly made for the implementation of the simplest manual bending methods.

We make a pipe bender for bending a profile pipe with our own hands

Quite often in the household there is a need for a pipe bender.

However, spending a lot of money on purchasing a professional machine to bend several pipes for your own needs is a very irrational decision.

That is why in our article we will talk about how to make a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands. We will describe the detailed process, accompanying it with photographs and examining some drawings.

Why are pipe benders needed?

Pipes have been and still remain one of the most popular types of building materials. Both the household and construction segments can rarely do without rolled metal products, and profile pipes occupy one of the main places here.

Build a gazebo, build a canopy, arrange a fence - in all these and many other cases there is no escape from its use. This also entails the presence of a pipe bender, with which the pipe can be bent along a radius to achieve the required angle.

Moreover, the equipment can be adapted for operations with pipes of various sections, including round and square, and made of steel, metal-plastic, stainless steel or aluminum.

Manufacturing process

It may seem to some that it is possible to bend a pipe without much difficulty, without resorting to the help of special equipment. However, this is a rather responsible process, since incorrect actions can provoke deformations that will affect the throughput of the pipe and reduce its performance characteristics.

The possible bend radius of the pipe is determined by its diameter (in the case of a profile pipe, the length of its sides) and the thickness of the walls. If desired, you can try to make the radius smaller than permissible, but this, again, will affect the strength and operational characteristics of the pipe.

The manufacturing scheme for a pipe bender involves the use of a special template, for the creation of which it is not necessary to use any serious drawings. It can be seen in the photo:

As you can see, to make it you will need a board, the thickness of which should be slightly greater than the diameter of the pipe being processed. To prevent the pipe from slipping during operation, the board structure is given a certain slope.

The boards are fixed together and securely attached to the work surface. Everything ingenious is simple!

This is what a homemade manual pipe bender made according to this principle will approximately look like. To the right of the template there is a well-fixed stop. One end of the pipe is inserted between it and the pipe bender, and the other end should be carefully bent along the arched surface of our workpiece.

To make our task easier, we remember physics and resort to using a lever. As such, you can use a rod that can be inserted inside the profile or round pipe being processed.

A pipe of a larger diameter and appropriate shape, which is put on top, can also be used.

You need to bend the pipe sequentially to prevent kinks and also to make your task easier.

A template of a similar arched shape can be made using hooks positioned appropriately on the work surface, as can be seen in the photo:

With the help of such a device, you can bend thick-walled pipes, using a winch, which will greatly facilitate your task.

Quite powerful pipes can be processed on such a stand. But here, unlike the description of our first template, you should not make bevels when cutting out the boards, and the pipe itself must be securely fixed using several stops.

A homemade manual pipe bender can look like this if you set a desire and goal:

The main difficulty in the manufacture of this design is the selection of rollers of the appropriate diameter, which determine the possible diameter and quality of bending of the pipe. The task is somewhat simplified when working with flexible pipes, where, for example, wood can be used as a material for making rollers.

However, often a steel pipe is used, the rollers for which can be turned on a lathe. You can also make a drawing according to which the rollers are cut out of plywood (do not forget about tilting in the required direction). They are circles of different diameters, which are then fastened together into a single structure.

Then their surfaces are sanded, and to make the structure more durable, it can be wrapped in thin metal plates.

The photo shows one of the options for pipe benders, which you can create yourself using wooden rollers:

However, as you might have already guessed, the complexity of the pipe bender design and the material used to make the components are largely determined by the size of the pipes being processed. If they are flexible enough (this is, in particular, aluminum pipes), wooden parts are quite suitable. They can also be conveniently replaced with new ones in case of wear.

How to effectively bend a profile pipe

Have you started any construction or housekeeping work? We understand. Now you definitely need to bend the profile pipe. Let's look at some drawings, photos of which we will provide below, and talk in detail about how to design a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands.

This is what the machine itself will look like:

Here are a few episodes regarding the manufacturing process:

Now, having some idea of the finished picture, you can look at the drawings:

The most difficult task is turning the rollers and bearing housings. The diameter of the shaft and the size of the sprockets will depend on the dimensions of the rollers (however, you don’t have to resort to the latter, however, on a single-roller drive the design can cause slipping).

Do-it-yourself profile pipe bender: drawings and manufacturing tips

From this article you will learn how to assemble a pipe bending machine yourself. Also in the article you will find information on how to make a pipe bender with your own hands, videos and drawings with comments on the assembly and use of the machine. We will talk about the nuances of installation and share secrets.

Pipe bending machines are necessary not only for professional work, but also for home work. Bends of pipes along a large radius are especially relevant - they are used to make the ribs of the frames of greenhouses, canopies, and hotbeds. We will tell you how to make simple pipe bending machines in this article.

What is the difference between bending round and profile pipes

Straight and round pipes initially have different purposes - round for water supply (sometimes poles), straight for the frame. Therefore, the requirements for tightness and safety of the wall are different - a round pipe must retain its properties as much as possible.

In this regard, thrust wheels and mandrels always have a groove of a certain diameter. Wheels and headstocks for profile pipes have either a rectangular groove or a “tooth” along the entire circumference. It crushes the pipe wall inward and thereby maintains the cross-sectional dimensions.

This is relevant because the straight profile is bent under a small radius, mainly in order to obtain decorative elements of the so-called “cold forging”.

DIY profile pipe bender on rollers

The homemade version of this machine is schematically taken from factory models. The design is simplified as much as possible and is within the power of a novice master.

According to the principle of operation, roller machines are divided into two main types - with press rollers and with a lifting platform (platforms).

In this case, the main structure is almost the same, the only difference is which element will determine the radius of the arch. We will look at a simple design with a lifting platform.

1, 3 - channel; 2 - racks; 4 - rollers; 5 - loop; 6 - jack

To create the machine, you will need three pairs of bearings with a seat diameter of at least 30 mm - this will be the basis of the rollers. Also, the shafts themselves should be selected for them so that they fit into the bearings (scrap, wheel, factory shafts, automotive parts). The rest of the material - channel, 10 mm steel plate, angle - can be varied depending on available supplies.

Completing of the work:

  1. Take a reliable base, for example, a thick-walled channel 100-150 mm long 800 mm.
  2. From the same channel you need to make platforms - two sections of 300 mm each.
  3. 500 mm from one of the sides we vertically weld a central post 350 mm high from a square pipe or a paired channel.
  4. From above, strictly horizontally, we weld a fixed platform and a rear pillar to it.
  5. We increase the walls from the profile pipe to a height of 120 mm. The height must be maintained in such a way that the size in the drawing is no less than the maximum thickness of the pipe that is supposed to be bent.
  6. To create a moving platform you need to make a loop. We select a pipe and a “finger” so that it fits into it without play. We cut the pipe to the width of the channel and divide it into three parts. We weld the two outer ones to the frame, and the third (middle) to a 300 mm section of channel. We mount the connection “on the finger”.
  7. We weld bearings to both parts of the platform 50 mm from the edge on both sides, as well as on the extended walls. Reinforce with corners.

Attention! Make sure the bearings are aligned - misalignment will not allow you to install the shaft.

  1. We install the rollers in the bearings. We mount a removable crank on the middle roller, for example, a bicycle pedal.
  2. At the end of the moving platform, you need to install a regulating mechanism. Ideally, a hydraulic jack, but you can get by with a threaded one (rod from the machine, leg from the scaffolding). The lift is also secured to the base with bolts.
  3. If desired, legs can be welded to the base for mounting on bolts.

Hydraulic profile pipe bender for small radii

The three-point machine differs from other types of pipe benders not so much in the drive (hydraulics), but in the way the force is applied. The principle of operation of this device is extremely simple - a section of pipe, fixed with a stop at two points, is pressed in the middle (at the third point) by a radial mandrel with a groove, gradually taking its shape.

Homemade pipe bender - assembled without problems!

Any home craftsman can make a basic homemade pipe bender. And if you really want to, it’s quite possible to make a more complex device for bending pipes made of metal and other materials.

1 What types of pipe benders are there?

Pipe benders are divided into different types depending on the type of their drive (hydraulic, electric and manual), the level of mobility (portable and stationary), and the type of workpiece processing (rolling, rolling, impact with a special rod, winding). Electrical devices are considered the most practical and accurate to use. They operate automatically due to the fact that they are equipped with an electric drive. Such mechanisms are capable of bending products from any materials.

Hydraulic pipe benders are good for working with profile pipes (rectangular, square). But, we note that when used, such devices often change the internal radius of the bent workpieces.

For this reason, it is not advisable to use them for bending sewer and water pipes. Pneumatic pipe benders do not have this problem. Their design includes a tube for supplying heated air.

This makes it possible to bend tubular products in any required directions without changing their radius.

The mechanism that uses rolling to bend the workpiece works very simply. Its design includes a fixed-type template and special rollers (they are called pressure rollers). The latter are precisely used for running in the pipe. Winding pipe benders work differently. In them, the workpiece is pressed against a special stop and a movable roller, and then pulled between these elements.

A more complex operating principle is implemented in a rolling pipe bender. This machine has a central roller and two additional support rollers. The rolling mechanism is classified as a universal unit. It is allowed to bend pipes of different sizes. Crossbow devices have two rollers (they are stationary). The pipe is supported on them. The bending process itself is carried out using a special template mounted on a movable rod.

2 How to make the simplest pipe bender - boards and corners

We have understood in general terms the design features of mechanisms for bending pipe products. Now it will be easier for us to understand which device will require minimal effort to make. Let's say right away that the design of a particular homemade mechanism depends on the bending radius of the workpiece that we plan to obtain, the diameter of the pipe and the thickness of its walls.

If you need a homemade pipe bender to perform simple and unimportant work (for example, to bend products with an arc for building a greenhouse), the easiest way is to make a template-type device. Everything is elementary here:

  1. Take several wooden boards. Connect them together into one structure using any method convenient for you (metal corners, adhesives, nails or wood screws). The thickness of the boards used must be a couple of centimeters greater than the cross-section of the pipes that are planned to be bent.
  2. Attach the made wooden template to the base. This function can be performed by any separate surface or an ordinary table.
  3. Screw the special stop to the base. You will rest the tubular product against it and bend it at the required angle.

Note! You should not bend the pipe at one point, but rather bend it - carefully but confidently. Then the workpiece will acquire the desired configuration and not break.

3 Manual mechanisms with rollers - more complex devices

To bend large cross-section pipes, you can make a machine with a fixed and movable (called a pressure) roller. Such mechanisms are made of metal or wood. Wooden benders are ideal for working with copper pipes. Wood is a fairly soft material, so it does not deform copper products. Metal pipe benders with rollers are more suitable for working with steel products.

  • The rollers must be mounted on a U-shaped metal holder.
  • The base of the pipe bender can be made from durable sheets of plywood or boards; you can also use sheet steel.
  • The roller holder must rotate. At the same time, it needs to be fixed with high quality using a homemade machine.
  • A lever is placed on the holder on the reverse side of the stationary roller. The longer it is, the higher the bending force you can create.

4 Crossbow and rolling pipe benders - we do it ourselves

We just want to note that such homemade devices can be used for bending pipes with a round cross-section. The crossbow machine usually deforms profile products. Now let's try to make a high-tech device that operates on the rolling principle. Its main elements are rotating rollers. There are three of them in the design of such a pipe bender. In this case, one of the rollers will serve as a pressure roller.

The operating principle of the rolling device is not difficult to understand. It is based on the fact that the pressure of the roller (pressure) on the pipe gradually increases. Moreover, the load on the workpiece being processed is repeated in all positions of the movable roller element.

Due to this scheme, the product is bent using the most gentle technology. In this case, the pipe walls are stretched as evenly as possible. It is advisable to equip a homemade rolling machine with an electric drive.

The supporting structure of the pipe bender may be made from wood.

As you can see, it is possible to make devices for bending pipe products yourself. Their functioning is based on the laws of elementary mechanics that are understandable to everyone. We hope that you will not have any serious difficulties making a homemade bender for steel, copper and metal-plastic pipes.

Do-it-yourself pipe bender for a profile pipe: manufacturing methods

Anyone who likes to make various products and designs on their own is often faced with the need to bend a profile pipe into an arc.

It is impossible to do this smoothly and accurately without special devices, so there is a need to make a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands. Craftsmen have come up with quite a lot of designs for this device.

Many of them can be done independently. At the same time, they do not require large amounts of money and are easy to manufacture and use.

A pipe bender is a device that can be used to bend a pipe at the desired angle.

Before you start talking about the options and methods for making pipe benders, you need to decide what it is and what it is used for. So, a pipe bender is a manual device or a stationary machine that allows you to bend a pipe from any material at an arbitrary angle.

The pipe can be steel, copper, aluminum or plastic with a diameter from 5 to 1220 mm or profile with any cross-section. Bend angle from 0 to 180 degrees. This article brings to your attention the technology for manufacturing several types of this simple device, after studying which you can make any copy you like in a few hours.

What types of pipe benders are there?

If we are talking about industrial devices, they are divided into several types according to the method of drive, as well as the type of bending.

Classification by drive type

The machines are: hydraulic, electromechanical and manual. Machines based on hydraulic drive are manual and stationary. Their power is enough to easily bend pipes even with a 3-inch diameter. Hydraulic pipe benders are used in professional activities in specialized industries and are capable of performing a very large volume of work.

Electromechanical devices can be used to bend almost any pipe, even with very thin walls, which is beyond the power of hydraulics. After all, electronics make it possible to very accurately calculate the force and bending angle, which prevents the material from tearing. Pipes bent by such devices do not show the slightest signs of deformation.

Manual pipe benders are used only for bending small-diameter pipes made of polymers, stainless steel or non-ferrous metals. They operate mainly from the electrical network. They are easy to use and do not require much physical strength to operate. It is quite possible to make such pipe benders for a profile pipe with your own hands.

You can bend a pipe using the device in various ways. Depending on this, the following types of pipe benders can be distinguished: crossbow, spring, segment, mandrel.

Crossbow devices are equipped with a special shape, which is the bending element. It is designed for one diameter or section of pipe. To bend a pipe of a different diameter, the mold must be replaced. Spring devices are equipped with elastic springs that allow plastic pipes to be bent without deformation. Segment ones are equipped with a special segment that pulls the pipe around itself, bending it at the desired angle.

The principle of bending a profile pipe using a homemade tool

You need to understand that the method and angle of bending of the pipe depends on its characteristics. There is even such a value as the minimum bending radius, with a further decrease in which the pipe becomes deformed or simply breaks. This indicator depends on the wall thickness, material and cross-section of the pipe.

One of the options for using a bent profile is arranging a greenhouse

How to make a simple manual pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands

Now let's look at some homemade options for pipe benders. The simplest option provides the possibility of bending the pipe using a template to a given radius. This technology is quite suitable for bending steel pipes, not just aluminum ones. The template is simply cut out of boards, the thickness of which is slightly greater than the diameter or cross-section of the pipe that needs to be bent.

These boards are securely fastened together so that the pipe cannot jump out of them during the bending process. To form a gutter, the boards to be fastened are simply cut at a slope for a round pipe. Then, the finished wooden template is attached to a table or other similar base. A stop is attached next to the template to secure the pipe.

A self-built pipe bender for a profile pipe of this type is capable of bending even fairly thick-walled pipes if a winch is used. If the pipe is profiled, then bevels are not made when cutting boards. Instead, the pipe is secured using several restraints.

Drawing with dimensions for making a pipe bender with your own hands

Using wood, you can even build a rolling pipe bender by turning wooden rollers. They can also be made from bearings or polyurethane. In general, the complexity of making homemade pipe benders depends in some way on the flexibility of the pipe. Pliable options can be bent on wooden devices without much difficulty simply with your hands, but for rigid pipes you will need more complex devices with metal parts.

Making a homemade hydraulic pipe bender

If you decide to make a real hydraulic pipe bender, you need to get a hydraulic jack, a channel, two rollers and a shoe. In addition, you will need several metal plates made of steel more than 3 mm thick.

Diagram and principle of operation of a homemade hydraulic pipe bender using a jack

Using a welding machine, a rectangular structure is created from the channel, the height of which coincides with the height of the fully extended jack. It is installed on a rigid base and securely secured with metal plates.

A jack must be selected with a lifting capacity of at least 5 tons. It is designed to act as a pusher. The main task here is to find the most suitable videos. The difficulty is that only with the most precise circling of the pipe with rollers can a truly high-quality bend be obtained. If you find different rollers and make them removable, you can bend pipes of various sections and diameters.

An example of a DIY device for bending metal pipes

The advantages of a hydraulic, self-built pipe bender for a profile pipe are: ease of manufacture, availability and low cost of the jack and parts. This device allows you to bend any profile and round pipes in a cold state with high quality.

How to make a rolling pipe bender yourself

The process of bending a pipe in a rolling machine is as follows. The pipe is laid on side rollers, and a third one is lowered on top of it, fixing the product in a given position. When we start to rotate the handle, the chain sets the shafts into rotation, and the profile or round pipe bends at the required angle.

Step 1: creating a pipe bender base from a steel channel 80x80x4

To make such a device you need:

  • grind rollers and races for bearings. This task can be entrusted to a turner, who, according to the drawings, will do the job in the best possible way. The device will have three shafts, one of which is suspended on springs, and the other two are fixed in the sides of the frame;

Step 2: making the screw mechanism housing

  • prepare a shelf from a 50 mm channel. It has the shape of a rectangle with sides 100x30 cm. Holes are made in it for attaching shafts and threads are cut to adjust the position of the pressure shaft;

Step 3: Create a Standard Threaded Screw

  • fasten all parts together using a welding machine;
  • the shelf with the pressure shaft is suspended on springs, and the side shafts are connected through sprockets with a chain. A handle for rotation is welded onto one of the shafts;

Step 4: Making the Center Drive Roller Rotary Handle

  • mount the jack so that it can be used to easily adjust the clamping force.

Step 5: assembling all the parts of a homemade rolling pipe bender

It is quite possible to make a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands. Its complexity depends on what purposes you need it for. If these are only one-time actions, then wooden structures are sufficient. If you are engaged in the manufacture of pipe products on an ongoing basis, then you will need a more complex unit.

How to make a pipe bender with your own hands

During work in your own workshop, garage, or on the site, situations may arise when it is necessary to bend a profile pipe. To perform bends along different circles, it is necessary to use a special installation. Factory models cost a lot of money and will not pay off when carrying out one-time work. Because of this, it is more profitable to make a pipe bender yourself.

DIY pipe bending machine

What are pipe benders used for?

A homemade pipe bender is a very useful tool for your own site. It can be used to produce various metal products:

  1. Frames for greenhouses.
  2. Canopies of various shapes.
  3. Fences, gates.
  4. Pipelines.
  5. Bearing structures.

How does a pipe bender work?

Making a pipe bender is impossible without studying the design of this tool. The main elements of the installation include:

  1. A frame made of metal corners, profiles or channels.
  2. Movable rollers - 3 or more.
  3. The chain with which the moving elements will be driven.
  4. Drive for transmitting force to working parts.
  5. Axes of rotation.

Sometimes you can find homemade machines in which the support rollers are made of polyurethane or wood. When choosing these materials, you need to take into account the strength of the metal from which the pipes are made. Working with carbide products is prohibited.

Operating principle of a pipe bender

Homemade pipe benders should work on the same principle as purchased models. If the technology differs from the prototype, which has undergone numerous tests, the result could be very disastrous. Incorrect layout of the main elements, setting the gaps between the rollers, or choosing low-quality materials can lead to a number of problems:

  1. Machine breakdown.
  2. Metal crushing.
  3. Reduction in pipe wall thickness due to uneven stretching.
  4. Appearance of cracks.

For the assembly to be successful, you need to understand the operating principle of the pipe bender:

  1. Initially, the master draws a semicircle on a chipboard.
  2. Next, the templates are cut out using a jigsaw.
  3. The finished shield should be thicker than the product being bent.
  4. The template is fixed to any vertical surface using nails or self-tapping screws.
  5. A stop is installed in the side part, which is made from scraps of boards.
  6. The edge of the pipe to be bent must be secured between the stop and the template.
  7. The master must take the other edge and bend it according to the template.

In order to bend a small product, it is necessary to increase it. Any piece of pipe, fittings, or metal rods are suitable for this.

Types of pipe benders

There are three types of pipe bending machines, which differ in the type of drive. These include:

  1. Manual pipe bender for profile pipes. Used for bending arcs and rings. Installation weight up to 65 kg. To expand functionality, mandrels are installed on hand tools.
  2. Electric pipe bender for profile pipes. Models with electric drive are used in industrial enterprises. Allows you to bend pipes of different sections. These can be square or cylindrical products.
  3. Hydraulic pipe bender. These are powerful and productive models. Used for the manufacture of gas and pipelines.

Separation by weight and size:

  1. Portable models. They are distinguished by their low weight and small dimensions. Most often these are manual units.
  2. Stationary installations. They are used for serial execution of technological processes at large enterprises.

Materials and tools

To understand how many materials are needed to make a homemade unit, you need to find a drawing of a pipe bender with dimensions. It is necessary to thoroughly study all the key elements, their connection with other parts, and the operation of the working mechanisms. To make a simple bending machine, you will need the following parts:

  1. Chain for connecting working parts.
  2. Springs made of high-strength steel - 4 pieces.
  3. Metal profiles for making a frame.
  4. Hydraulic jack.
  5. Rollers for pipe bender - 3 pieces.

For manufacturing you will need a set of tools:

  1. Little Bulgarian.
  2. Welding machine.
  3. Drill with drills for metal.
  4. Set of wrenches.

If it is not possible to find a welding machine, you can use bolts and nuts. It is necessary to think in advance how the fasteners will be located so that they do not interfere with the work process.

How to make a pipe bender at home?

Anyone who has prepared a drawing, tools, and consumables can make a simple pipe bender with their own hands. Assembly steps:

  1. The first stage is creating the frame. Metal profiles are cut to size using a grinder and cleaned of possible debris and plaque. Next, they need to be connected to each other depending on the selected drawing and the dimensions of the structure. For connection, you can use a welding machine or bolts and nuts.
  2. The second stage is the installation of rollers and the axis of rotation according to the pipe bender diagram. Two shafts should be located below the third. The radius along which the product bends will depend on the distance between the axes of the shafts.
  3. The third stage is the installation of the mechanism driving the shafts. This is a chain drive. It is made from a chain and three gears. However, this is an optional element. You can only rotate one roller.

To simplify the work process, it is necessary to install the handle on the movable shaft. It is easier to transmit force through it.

The simplest pipe bender with your own hands!

Instructions for creating a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands:

  1. Make a strong frame using a channel and metal corners.
  2. Place two shafts on the lower channel. Install the third on springs higher than the others. The shelf on which it will be located must also be made of channel wood.
  3. Attach gears, rings, and bearings to the rollers.
  4. Cut threads in rings. To do this, holes are drilled in them and processed with a tap. Gears are attached to the threaded connection.
  5. The chain is put on one of the gears and tensioned.

All that remains is to weld all the elements together and check the functionality of the homemade machine. The shelf with the third roller attached must be level. The jack must be placed on the same shelf. All that remains is to secure the handle to control the machine. Before starting work, you need to check how firmly the parts are connected to each other.

A pipe bender is a useful device both at a summer cottage and at a construction site. It can be used to produce products of various shapes. In order not to buy expensive tools, you can assemble the installation yourself. To do this, you need to find a drawing, prepare materials, tools, and carry out work according to the instructions.

And don't forget, there are a wide variety of drawings. Some of them will suit you, and some will not.

First way

Diagram and drawing of a homemade pipe bender

Let's start with a complex design. A drawing will not hurt here, since it is recommended to adhere to certain installation dimensions. When choosing drawings, remember to consider your needs.

If you plan to do a lot of work as a pipe bender, this homemade option is suitable. If you need the machine for a one-time use, take a closer look at methods 2 and 3.

How to make a pipe bender with your own hands using a more complex drawing?

  1. Find a metal base that is the right size.
  2. Fix it on the surface. The base should stand firmly and evenly.
  3. Make holes at the ends with a metal drill.
  4. Drill the metal plates as well. You need holes to install the shafts.
  5. The plates are fixed with bolts and nuts.
  6. Rollers of the required diameter are mounted in the resulting grooves. It is recommended to order rollers from a professional turner or buy ready-made products. It is extremely difficult to do them yourself without the appropriate experience.
  7. The rollers are fastened and securely fixed with studs and nuts.
  8. Profile square pipes are installed in the center of the metal base. This way you will get a stand for the third shaft, which is responsible for the deformation of the pipes. All this is done using a welding machine.
  9. The deforming shaft is mounted inside with fasteners.
  10. A handle made of a metal pipe with a round cross-section is welded to one of the pipe bender shafts.

Such a pipe bender seems complicated, so beginners first choose simple drawings.

Although in terms of efficiency, such designs are among the best. Enlist the help of a friend, watch training videos.

If you carefully study the drawing, there will be nothing difficult in creating this pipe bender.

Second way

If the previous option turned out to be too complicated for you, or you do not need such a productive pipe bender, you can easily get by with simpler designs.

Therefore, we will introduce you to the second method of obtaining a homemade pipe bender. The scheme is very simple, so there will be no problems with manufacturing. But you will not be able to bend pipes whose cross-section exceeds 25 millimeters.

  • Draw your own drawing for your future pipe bender. Here all parameters, dimensions are taken into account, the nuances of the future template are determined;
  • Using boards or lumber, cut out blanks from them according to the drawing. If you have a wide board, cut a semicircle out of it. Or you can take several boards, connecting them together one after another. The connection is made with nails, screws, self-tapping screws;
  • The semicircular blank will serve as a platform for bending pipes. Therefore, make sure that its width is slightly larger than the width of the pipes being bent. Otherwise, the pipes may slip out, causing injury to you;
  • The board template is fixed on the table or floor. It is most convenient to use a table, since bending pipes on the floor is a dubious pleasure;
  • On one side near the wooden piece, fasten an additional large bolt, metal tube or wooden block. It will act as a stop for bending pipes;
  • By making several of these templates, you can bend pipes of different diameters and at different angles.

Third way

Let's give an example of another simple pipe bender, which requires a minimum of elements. A budget option that provides quite impressive performance despite its simplicity.

  1. Arm yourself with a fairly large sheet of plywood. The sheet is mounted on the wall. It is better to make a pipe bender in the garage. This design is ideal for home use.
  2. Buy a set of metal hooks. Make sure they are strong enough to handle the pipes you need to bend.
  3. Draw an arc on a sheet of plywood. Its parameters are determined based on the pipes that you plan to process and give them the desired bend.
  4. According to the arc, fasten the hooks of the pipe bender in series. Use strong fasteners to secure the hooks to the plywood.
  5. The pipe bender hooks themselves must have a secure hook. This way they will not break under the pressure of the workpiece being bent and will not be able to fly out of it during work.

Making a pipe bender is not the most difficult task. Homemade tools are widely used for bending pipes, even among professionals.

But if you need an efficient pipe bender that can provide high productivity, it is better to opt for factory tools.

Factory pipe benders provide more functionality, but cost money. So the choice is yours.
