How to make a simple pipe bender yourself

Do-it-yourself pipe bender for a profile pipe: a homemade manual machine according to drawings

How to make a simple pipe bender yourself

Profile pipes of square or rectangular cross-section are widely used in construction and repair. They are used to make gazebos, canopies, greenhouses, frames for various structures, and fences. To give the element a curved shape, use a special device - a pipe bender.

Pipe bender

Complex spatial structures are produced by specialized workshops using high-precision, powerful machines. At home, industrially made or homemade hand tools are more often used. If you need to bend several elements, it is advisable to make a pipe bender for a profile pipe yourself. A simple, reliable device will cope with the task no worse than the factory one, and at the same time will cost several times less.

Operating principle of a pipe bender

The pipe bending machine is designed for bending pipes at an angle of up to 90°. This processing of a rigid all-metal element allows you to avoid welding pipes and creating threaded connections.

When bending, the principle of mechanical cold deformation is used. The material is not adversely affected by high temperatures. The rolled metal is placed between the static rollers of the device, and the movable pressure shaft creates a force that bends the profile at the desired angle.

Operating principle of a roller pipe bender

To avoid deterioration of technical characteristics and metal destruction, the bending radius of the pipe is limited.

Its minimum value depends on the type of material - steel, copper, aluminum - and wall thickness. In this case, the thinning of the section does not exceed 20-25%. As a result of plastic deformation, the profile acquires a curved shape without loss of strength.

Table of minimum radii for bending steel profiles

To obtain a section of the angular configuration, use the local impact tool. The force is applied pointwise. The bend is formed by extrusion.

The profile bender differs from a conventional pipe bender for round pipes because it is designed to deform a profile that is more resistant to bending loads. To make arcs or arches, the workpiece is pulled on a rolling machine with one or more rollers and a large bending radius.

Types of pipe benders and their design

The construction industry produces roll forming machines in a wide range. They are designed for processing rolled metal with various technical characteristics and solving specific problems.

Manual

Compact mobile devices are used for the manufacture of arc elements from small profile pipes. Hand tools work due to human muscular efforts.

Types of manual pipe benders:

  • with a leading central shaft;
  • with a movable outer roller;
  • turning.

The design of a manual pipe bender with a leading central shaft consists of a base, two support rollers and one movable one. The impact is regulated by a pressure screw collar inserted into the upper part of the mechanism.

Roller pipe bender with clamping screw on the central shaft

The pipe is pulled through the shafts manually using a handle and a chain attached to the axles of the rollers. The pressure is increased by lowering the pressure bolt. The profile gradually bends and takes on the shape of an arc.

A manual profile bender can be equipped with a movable end roller. It is secured to a part of the frame connected to the frame with powerful hinges.

The lifting height is changed with a jack, raising the edge of the table. The handle for pulling the metal product is attached to the central fixed roller.

Pipe bender with a moving part of the frame

To produce steeply curved sections from pipes 20x20, 30x20 and 40x20 mm with a wall thickness of up to 1.5 mm, rotary manual pipe benders are used. They allow you to bend the profile up to 360°.

Rotary pipe bender

The device is mounted horizontally on a frame or table, and a metal structure is inserted into the groove of the required size. By turning the long handle, the profile is pressed around the template and a bend is formed.

Hydraulic

In such pipe benders, the force is pumped by a hydraulic motor. Hydraulic cylinders transfer pressure of up to 12 tons to the pipe section, which makes it possible to bend even large workpieces.

Hydraulic pipe benders are produced by industry in two versions:

  • Manual. The pipe is inserted into a replaceable template of a suitable size - a support shoe, which securely fixes the product during bending. The hydraulic cylinder is activated by a handle and returns to its original position using a check valve. The tool is portable, used for processing profiles up to 50 mm in size.

Hand hydraulic tool

  • Electrically driven. More powerful devices allow you to bend pipes with a cross-section of up to 150 mm and a wall thickness of up to 3 mm. The electric motors are equipped with two-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinders. Due to this, a large force is developed at the end of the working stroke.

Electric hydraulic pipe bender

Hydraulic pipe benders have high productivity and process structures with high precision. To give the workpiece a given bending angle, there is a graduated scale on the device body.

Electromechanical

Electric roller professional profile bending machine is high-tech equipment for the manufacture of curved thin- and thick-walled metal structures. Allows you to automate large volumes of work.

Electromechanical pipe benders can be manual or stationary. The former are used for bending pipes with a diameter of up to 50 mm in conditions where power supply is available. The second are large machines with powerful engines installed in industrial workshops. They are controlled by operators via CNC.

Electromechanical CNC machine

The profile bend is formed by one or more shafts. Pipe benders are classified according to bending method:

  • winding - the element bends when rotating around a stationary pulley;
  • rolling - the curvature of the part is imparted by a movable roller, which presses it against the template as it passes;
  • rolling - the profile is pulled through three rolls, two of which are stationary, and the third moves relative to the others;
  • extruding - works like a crossbow, bends the workpiece with a retractable punch with an attachment made for a pipe of a certain size.

Steel profiles are most often bent using rolling machines, where the force is distributed more evenly.

In roller pipe benders, rolled products with a square or rectangular cross-section experience less deformation, at which the stability of the walls is maintained.

Do-it-yourself manual pipe bender for profile pipes

To bend a profile pipe with small cross-sectional dimensions without a pipe bender, craftsmen use templates of the desired curvature made of metal or wood. The workpiece is pressed manually to the edges of the segment, rigidly fixing one end.

Wood template

The thin-walled element can be deformed when heated. Heat the area with a blowtorch to a temperature of 350-400°C and, using manual force, give the profile an arched shape.

If using simple methods is not allowed by the product parameters, you can design a manual roller pipe bender for a profile pipe. It is used to make arches and arcs for canopies, greenhouses and other structures of complex shape.

Required materials and tools

To make the device, you will need:

  • channel No. 8 or No. 10 for a rigid frame;
  • 2 hardened steel rollers with steps for profiles of different heights or restrictive rings;
  • roller with notches for the movable shaft;
  • finished bearing units;
  • 2 or 3 gears or sprockets;
  • steel chain;
  • clamping screw;
  • thin pipe for the gate;
  • lever;
  • welding machine;
  • drill;
  • "Bulgarian";
  • hammer.

You also need cotter pins, nuts, threaded bushings, and washers. To process the finished structure you will need paint and lubricant.

Blueprints

The drawing is the basis that will help you make a pipe bender without making major mistakes. This is especially important when working with metal labor-intensively.

Ready-made drawings are available on the Internet. Having sufficient experience, they are easy to understand and adapt to your capabilities.

You can imagine an approximate structure of a pipe bender by studying a factory analogue, and then develop a detailed diagram of your model.

Construction assembly stages

Sequence of operations for making a homemade roller pipe bender:

  1. Cut the channel to the dimensions of the posts and base.
  2. Drill holes in the frame parts to mount the rollers.
  3. Weld a support frame with racks from a channel.
  4. Cut and weld a housing from the channel with holes for installing the drive roller. The shaft should rotate easily inside.
  5. Secure the clamping screw to the resulting box using bearings. Drill a hole in the top of the screw for the collar.
  6. Insert the housing with the drive roller between the posts. The structure must move freely vertically. Secure the cover with a screw nut on top.

    Clamping mechanism diagram

  7. Screw the bearing units to the frame.
  8. Insert the collar into the hole in the clamping bolt.
  9. On the outside of the shaft axis, place the gears on a key or split cone bushings with nuts. Attach the third “star” to the stand. Put on the chain and press in the sleeve for the handle.
  10. Conduct trial tests and make adjustments if necessary.

The last step is to disassemble, clean the metal from burrs, paint the fixed parts, and reassemble. Units that are subject to friction during operation should be treated with Lithol or other thick lubricant.

Ready homemade machine

To bend the workpiece, it is placed on stationary rollers, the pressure screw is lowered all the way and pulled using a rotating handle alternately in one direction and the other.

After each rental, the screw is tightened with a collar. When the arc acquires sufficient curvature, the screw nut is secured with a lock nut. This will allow you to bend several arches with the same radius.

This homemade pipe bender can even be used for professional purposes. It can handle profiles up to 60x60 mm in size or 3 pipes with a cross-sectional width of 20 mm at the same time.

Hydraulic pipe bender

The use of hydraulics greatly simplifies both the operation of the pipe bender and its design. The simplest device is a frame with two support rollers. The mechanical effect on the profile is exerted by a jack with a shoe attachment.

The hydraulic device is designed for angular bending of pipes, since the deforming force is transferred to a section of short length.

Tools, materials and drawing

To make your own hydraulic pipe bender you will need:

  • "Bulgarian";
  • welding machine;
  • hydraulic jack;
  • channel and angle for the power frame;
  • support shoe;
  • rollers or guides.

Assembly steps

Scheme for assembling a simple hydraulic pipe bender:

  1. Cut the corner to size and weld the frame in the form of a support platform with racks.
  2. Weld a horizontal channel frame to the frame.
  3. To adjust the bending radius, drill several holes in the frame.

    Crossbar for adjusting the bending radius of the pipe

  4. Install the rollers in the desired position.
  5. Place the shoe on the jack rod and install the hydraulic mechanism into the lower part of the frame.

To bend the workpiece, it is placed between the segment and the support rollers. Gradually increase the load using the jack lever.

When the desired bending angle is obtained, open the bypass valve of the hydraulic cylinder, lower the jack piston and remove the finished part.

Pipe bending process

For thin-walled profiles, mechanisms with a lifting capacity of 5-8 tons are used. To bend powerful pipes, hydraulics must have greater capabilities - up to 12 tons.

about the manufacture of a hydraulic pipe bender:

The hydraulic homemade pipe bender is easy to disassemble. The jack can be replaced with a more convenient or powerful one. To make all operations easier, the design is sometimes adapted for horizontal work.

The most common defects when bending with a hydraulic pipe bender are the formation of depressions, corrugations, cracks or profile breakage. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to use factory-made shoes. They are made of durable steel, centered and evenly transfer the load to the pipe walls.

Homemade profile bending without turning

How to make a simple pipe bender yourself

Do you know a turner who can turn shafts for a pipe bender? If not, then this article is for you. We propose to make a profile bending machine of the simplest design without the use of turning operations. It will obviously not be for a high-tech exhibition, but it will definitely fulfill its function of bending profile pipes at home.

This pipe bender is also called a profile bender, since it is mainly intended for bending profile metal - profile pipe, channel, angle and strip. With special rollers, it allows you to bend round pipes. It differs from a standard pipe bender in that it bends pipes not just at a given angle, but bends them into an arc or ring.

Bending strips on edge.

Important technical points in the manufacture of profile bending machines.

  • When bending, the profile pipe is deformed and its sides are squeezed out. Moreover, the smaller the bending radius, the more extrusion of the side walls of the pipe is observed. Also, creases form on one side of the pipe. These creases do not in any way affect the strength of the bent pipe, they just have an ugly appearance. To avoid creases on the pipe, it is necessary that the roller has a small rib exactly in the center. During the bending process, this rib will press in the side of the pipe, thereby eliminating creases. The height of the rib depends on the bending radius of the pipe. The smaller the bending radius of the pipe, the greater the height of such a rib should be. On average, a rib with a height of 3-5mm is sufficient. As a rib, you can weld a wire of the required diameter onto the roller.

Bending a profile pipe with creases.

Pipe bender roller with a rib in the center.

  • If you bend a profile pipe on rollers without a side flange, then there is a possibility of bending the pipe with a screw. This is due to the fact that during bending the pipe can move and its position relative to the roller axis will not be perpendicular, but at some degree. To avoid these problems, you need to bend the profile pipe on rollers with guide flanges.

Profile bending.

  • The force that must be applied to bring the pipe bender rollers together and thereby bend the pipe depends on the distance between the rollers. In other words, the smaller this distance, the greater the force required to bring the rollers together. This is especially noticeable if the pipe bender is designed with a central movable roller and is clamped with a screw.
  • The distance between the rollers also affects the length of the pipe that can be bent on a given profile bender. Short pipes cannot be bent on a pipe bender that has a large distance between the rollers. For these reasons, the rollers on the profile bender are made so that they can be rearranged.
  • The smaller the diameter of the pipe bender rollers, the smaller the contact patch between the pipe and the roller will be and the greater the likelihood of the pipe slipping during bending. On professional pipe benders, rollers are made with a diameter of 100-200 mm, and they allow you to bend profile pipes of large cross-sections. For home use, rollers with a diameter of approximately 20mm are suitable.
  • The more drive rollers, the less likely the pipe will slip. If you are going to bend a profile pipe of large sections, then it is advisable to make two drive rollers.
  • If the central movable roller is pressed with a screw, then to facilitate its rotation it is necessary to place a bearing ball under it. Then the contact patch between the screw and the supporting part will decrease and it will be much easier to turn the screw. It is better to choose a screw with a trapezoidal thread rather than a metric one. Trapezoidal threads can carry much greater axial loads than metric threads.

Types of thread.

  • To bend round pipes you will need special rollers with a semicircular profile. If you bend a round pipe on straight rollers, it will flatten and instead of a round pipe you will get an oval.

Pipe bender roller for bending round pipes.

Rollers can be made in different ways, even the most unusual ones at first glance. For example, bicycle hubs can be used as rollers. Such hubs will not withstand heavy loads, but they will be quite capable of bending a pipe with a cross-section of 20x40 mm.

Profile bender with shafts made from bicycle hubs.

You can use regular crowbar as rollers. We simply cut it to the required length and put a bearing of a suitable diameter on such a roller. For example, scrap with a diameter of 30 mm, bearings No. 306 GOST 8338-78 are well suited for it. To prevent the bearings from moving along the roller axis, it is enough to weld a drop near the bearing race.

A pipe bender shaft made from scrap.

Rollers can be made from pipes and purchased washers. The figure below clearly shows the design of the roller.

Pipe bender roller.

If you do not have suitable washers, you can make them yourself. How to make them, see below in the article entitled “how to make rollers for bending a profile pipe using the rolling method . Instead of a bolt, you can insert a metal circle of the required diameter into the roller and weld it.

A profile bending roller made of a pipe, washers and a metal circle.

The best option is if the bearings are used in a ready-made housing. If there are no such bearings, then we use any suitable ones without a housing. They do not have to be rigidly attached to the frame of the pipe bender. You can make stands for them from a profile pipe or corners. The photo below shows various bearing mounting options.

Profile bending frame.

A profile bender made with bearings in the housing.

A pipe bender can be made from almost any scrap metal. The frame must be sufficiently rigid, it does not matter what it is made from. It is mainly made from channel steel, as it is quite rigid and has a wide surface for installing pipe bender shafts.

When making a profile bender, you need to build on the materials that you have available.

One of the main components of a pipe bender is the power unit. It is made from either a jack or a threaded screw. If you have a screw, you can make a pipe bender with a central movable roller. The screw, by the way, can be taken from an old non-working jack or from a clamp. The screw must be powerful, at least 16mm in diameter.

If you have a jack, then you can choose what type of profile bending to make. You can make a pipe bender with an outer movable roller and a breaking frame, or with a central movable roller and outer fixed rollers.

THIS IS INTERESTING:  How to choose the right welding electrodes

The design is basically unimportant; the pipe will bend in any case. If you have sprockets and a chain, for example, bicycle ones, then it makes sense to connect the two shafts with a chain and thus make both of them drive shafts.

This will greatly help when bending profile pipes of large cross-section, for example, 40x60 and more. Small cross-section pipes bend well even on one drive roller.

If the rollers slip when bending the pipe, then you need to slightly loosen the pressure on the moving roller and then the slipping will stop.

The drive roller handle can be made from a regular bicycle pedal or a round steering wheel can be made.

If you intend to bend the pipe into a ring, then it should be possible to remove the top roller, otherwise the ring will be impossible to remove from the pipe bender.

This type of pipe bender allows you to bend profile and round pipes at an angle of 90 degrees or more.

Pipe bending diagram.

The principle of such a pipe bender is based on rolling a pipe with a roller. The profile of the roller must correspond to the profile of the pipe. This condition prevents unwanted deformations of the pipe at the bend. That is, protrusion of pipe walls and kinks are excluded. This pipe bender allows you to bend profile and round pipes.

To bend round pipes, you will need rollers with a semicircular profile. Here, unfortunately, it is impossible to do without turning work. But for bending pipes with a profile section, you can make rollers yourself.

How to make rollers for bending profile pipes using the rolling method.

These videos are pretty easy to make. You will need sheet metal, a drill, an angle grinder (grinder) and a bolt.

  1. We take sheet metal and mark a circle.
  2. Use a grinder to cut the metal around the marked circle.
  3. Drill a hole for the bolt in the center of the workpiece.

4. Insert a bolt into the hole, tighten it with a nut and secure the structure in the drill chuck.

5. Process the edge of the workpiece using a drill and grinder. You need to install a cleaning disk in the angle grinder.

We grind the workpiece.

6. We assemble the processed workpieces into a roller. Please note that the roller has a protrusion of approximately 5 mm in the center. If you have read the entire article, you should already know its purpose. Such a protrusion in the center of the roller should be made only on the central fixed roller; it is not needed on the rolling roller.

Roller for a pipe bender made of five circles.

In the rotating bracket of the pipe bender, it is necessary to provide holes for installing rollers for different pipes.

Pipe bender with holes in the bracket.

The holes must be at a certain distance from the center of the stationary roller. To make them correctly, you must first install the central roller, insert the pipe into it, then press the rolling roller to the pipe. And now the most important thing is that the rolling roller should be moved so that a gap of about 4-6 mm is formed between the pipe and it. This will be the place where the hole should be. Drill a hole on the swivel bracket in this place.

Can you tell me why this gap is needed? The fact is that the gap between the rolling roller and the workpiece in the initial position reduces the deformation of the pipe wall on the outside of the bend. In other words, the pipe will be pulled out of the clamp less during bending and the quality of bending will increase.

You also need to understand that each pipe has its own minimum bend radius. If you try to bend the pipes less than this radius, then with a high probability it will bend with creases. Therefore, the diameters of the central fixed rollers must be selected in accordance with the minimum bend radius.

Do-it-yourself pipe bender for a profile or round pipe: drawings and how to make

How to make a simple pipe bender yourself

Quite often when working with pipes there is a need to bend them. Such a task may arise during the manufacture of a greenhouse or laying a pipeline. Very often it turns out that you don’t have the necessary tools at hand.

There is no need to worry in such a situation, because a pipe bender can be made with your own hands from scrap materials. Creating this tool does not require special skills or much labor, so anyone can handle it.

Homemade pipe bender

A pipe bender is a device that allows you to bend a pipe in a certain way. With their help, you can perform various work; such equipment is especially relevant in assembling greenhouses or laying pipelines.

This tool is divided into several types, depending on the principle of operation:

  • hydraulic;
  • electrical;
  • pneumatic.

Manual lever pipe bender.

The first type is excellent for bending pipes without internal filling. Using such a tool is quite simple. However, the disadvantage of this option is the change in the internal radius of the part, which is unacceptable when processing drainpipes.

Equipment operating on the pneumatic principle allows for any bending in the required direction. This process is carried out under the influence of temperature, so you don’t have to worry about the appearance of breaks.

The most accurate bending method is to use an electric pipe bender. It operates on an automatic principle, and the deformation of parts is carried out using an electric drive.

Buying such a tool will not be difficult, because it is widely available in many stores. However, this is not necessary if you know how to make it yourself.

First of all, to make a manual pipe bender with your own hands, you will need a drawing, as well as other additional materials.

In addition, you need to decide which pipes need to be bent with its help. For example, thin-walled ones can be deformed using aluminum-based tools.

Scheme

Creating a pipe bender with your own hands must begin by choosing a drawing of the desired design. When selecting a scheme, you must be guided primarily by the availability of available materials, as well as the type of work to be done.

Manufacturing diagram of a pipe bender.

Its design consists of:

  • three metal rollers;
  • drive chain;
  • axles;
  • a mechanism that drives all elements of the device;
  • frame made of metal profiles.

Pipe benders for profile pipes are made with rollers based on wood or polyurethane. Of course, you should not forget about the mechanical parameters of the pipes when choosing the roller material.

To make the simplest type of machine manually, you can limit yourself to a jack and some additional structural elements. Such a tool will be small in size and will not take up much space.

What materials and design details are needed?

To figure out how to make a pipe bender for a round pipe from scrap materials with your own hands, you must first understand the basic principles of its operation.

As a rule, machines operate on the basis of rolling or rolling. This allows you to minimize the likelihood of kinking or damage to the pipe.

If you need to work with more durable materials, for example, fittings, then you will need an electric pipe bender with an electric drive. This equipment can easily cope with almost any task.

Components of a pipe bender.

To assemble the simplest tool, you will need the following set of parts:

  • jack;
  • metal profiles;
  • high strength springs;
  • three shafts;
  • drive chain;
  • some additional details.

The bending process on such a machine is quite simple. The pipe is laid on the side shafts, and the third one is lowered from above, providing the necessary load. Then you should turn the handle, which sets the shafts in motion using a chain.

Step-by-step assembly plan

A manual pipe bender, which allows you to change the shape of a profile pipe, is assembled by performing the following steps:

  • preparing the frame, the parts of which are connected by welding and bolts;
  • installation of the rotation axis and rollers in accordance with the selected drawing;
  • the operation of the bending tool mechanism is carried out through a chain transmission;
  • You also need a handle attached to one of the rollers, which will provide torque.

Of course, when collecting, you should also be guided by the type of material you will be working with. The lightest, simplest unit is perfect for small diameter pipes.

The technological sequence of manufacturing the device is as follows:

  • using a key, gears, bearings and rings are placed on the pressure shaft;
  • holes are made in the rings necessary to install the pressure roller;
  • after completion of the preparatory work, all parts of the structure are assembled in accordance with the previously prepared drawing;
  • at the final stage, shelves with springs attached to them are hung, and side rollers are installed, to one of which a handle is attached.

There are also some nuances during assembly. Thus, the pressure roller must not only be fixed with dowels, but also additionally screwed to the shelf. This shaft should be mounted to a shelf with pre-welded nuts for the springs.

A magnetic corner used as a holder will help tighten the chain. The jack must be installed on a suspended platform using bolted connections and welding.

On the Internet you can find a large number of photos and videos dedicated to the manufacture of a hydraulically driven pipe bender. Such a unit is equipped with a hydraulic cylinder, supercharger and stops. It is worth noting right away that this assembly is more complex and time-consuming.

Typically the tool design includes:

  • hydraulic jack with large lifting capacity;
  • shoe;
  • two or three videos;
  • channel;
  • thick metal plates.

The above are only the most important components; in fact, assembly will require more parts depending on the chosen design.

Bending is carried out using a hydraulic device. The pipe is installed in the shoe, and its ends are fixed. Deformation occurs due to the roller acting on the pipe. Once the required bend is achieved, the part is removed.

You can make a similar unit using diagrams from the Internet.

They mainly include the following technological processes:

  • a frame is made on which the rollers and shoe will be installed;
  • a jack is mounted on the lower platform made of a metal plate;
  • the most difficult part of the assembly is selecting the required size of rollers so that they are pressed tightly against the pipe;
  • the rollers and shoe are fixed using bolts that are screwed into pre-drilled holes in accordance with the selected pattern.

Features of work

A correctly assembled pipe bender from a jack will allow you to easily process pipes in accordance with the problems being solved. With such a tool there will definitely not be any difficulties with deforming the material. However, there are some recommendations that may make the job easier.

The cold method is the simplest. It is advisable to apply it to pipes made of plastic materials. However, do not forget to fill it with sand, cold water or salt to achieve a high-quality bend.

Using a pipe bender at work.

The hot method is used to deform corrugated pipes with thick walls. This method will allow you to perform high-quality bending with the least amount of effort.

There are some tips that will help you get the job done efficiently and without extra costs, namely:

  • the use of sprockets is not necessary, since the design can be made on the basis of only one roller, and a jack can be used as a clamping mechanism;
  • when bending according to a template, you should use metal hooks that will prevent the pipe from slipping;
  • bending under a large radius should be performed on a tool with crown rollers;
  • if you make the rollers movable, then the machine will be more universal, due to the ability to change the bending radius.

It is important to remember that the most accurate work can only be done using a template. It is usually made of wood. Using a template will allow you to achieve the required parameters.

Bottom line

Making a pipe bender with your own hands is not that difficult. You can use one of the schemes available on the Internet. Consistently following all technological processes, you can assemble this tool from scrap materials.

In addition, by making a hydraulically driven machine, it will be possible to bend not only profile pipes, but also fittings. Do not forget about the various bending methods, which include cold and hot methods. They will allow you to perform high-quality bending of both thin- and thick-walled pipes.

Do-it-yourself pipe bender - drawings of how to make a manual pipe bender for a profile pipe

Bending profile pipes is a fairly common procedure, for which a special device is used - a pipe bender. You can make a pipe bender for a profile pipe with your own hands, or you can purchase it at the construction market or in a store.

One of the simplest types of pipe bender for profiled pipes

Serial devices differ in their operating principles, they may have different types of drives, but operating any of these devices requires some experience. The use of devices manufactured in production conditions is limited by the fact that they are not cheap. A good solution in all such situations would be to independently manufacture a device designed for bending profile pipes, for which you can use improvised means.

Required design elements

The operating diagram of a pipe bender is very simple

To make a pipe bender with your own hands, you can use drawings of various designs. Their choice is determined mainly by what materials you have. Most often they opt for front-type pipe benders, the design of which includes:

  • three rollers (shafts), which must be metal;
  • drive chain;
  • axes of rotation;
  • a mechanism that will set in motion all elements of the device;
  • metal profiles from which the frame of the device will be made.

Very often, a machine for bending profile pipes is made with rollers made of wood or polyurethane. When choosing such materials, you should take into account the strength characteristics of the pipes that will be subject to bending. If you neglect this requirement, then the working elements of the homemade device may simply not withstand the load and collapse.

Drawing of a pipe bender: the sectional view shows the mounting structure of the pressure roller

To understand how to bend a profile pipe on a homemade device, it is important to understand the technology used for this process. As a rule, pipe benders use the rolling or rolling principle, which minimizes the risk of kinking and damage to the pipe.

To make a bend on a profile pipe using such a device, it must be inserted between the rollers of the pipe bender and turn the handle. The use of such a simple bending device allows you to obtain bends on a profile pipe that fully comply with the specified parameters.

Pipe bender using a jack

To make a simple machine for bending profile pipes, you will need the following structural elements:

  • ordinary jack;
  • metal profiles and shelf necessary for making the frame;
  • springs with high strength;
  • shafts in the amount of 3 pieces;
  • drive chain;
  • a number of other structural elements.

When using such a device, the operation of which can be seen in one of the videos below, the pipe is laid on two side rollers, and a third one is lowered on top of it, creating the required force. To give the pipe the necessary bend, you need to rotate the handle that drives the chain and, accordingly, the equipment shafts.

Option with inverted jack

Pipe bender manufacturing process

To make a device for bending profile pipes, you must perform the following procedures.

  • Prepare a reliable frame, the elements of which are connected by welding and bolted connections.
  • Using a previously prepared drawing, install the axis of rotation and the shafts themselves, two of which are located above the third. The bending radius of the profile pipe depends on the distance at which the axes of such shafts are located.
  • To operate this bending mechanism, a chain drive is used. To complete such a transmission, it is equipped with three gears, and the chain itself can be picked up from an old car, motorcycle or other equipment.
  • To operate such equipment, a handle is needed that is connected to one of the shafts. It is through this handle that the required torque is created.

Instructions for making a pipe bender

Making a pipe bender for a profile pipe yourself is not at all difficult if you adhere to the following technological sequence.

  • Gears, bearings and rings are placed on the pressure shaft, which are connected to it using a key. First, a drawing of such a shaft, races for bearings and rollers is developed, then these parts are turned, which is best entrusted to a qualified turner. In total, for this device it is necessary to make three shafts, one of which is suspended on springs, and the other two are located on the sides.
  • Then it is necessary to drill holes in the rings, which are necessary for making grooves and threading.
  • Now you need to make a shelf, for which you use a channel, in which you also drill holes and cut the threads required when installing the pressure shaft.
  • After completing the preparatory measures, the entire structure of the equipment must be assembled, for which welding and bolted connections are used. First of all, the frame is installed, which also serves as the legs of the pipe bender.
  • The next step is to hang the shelf with the pressure shaft attached to it, for which springs are used. After this, you need to install side support shafts on the homemade pipe bender, on one of which a handle is attached.
  • The final touch is to install the jack on the pipe bender.

Some subtleties of installation work:

  • the pressure shaft, fixed with keys, is additionally screwed to the shelf;
  • installation of the pressure shaft is carried out according to the following scheme: the shaft is installed on a shelf to which nuts for the springs are pre-welded; after the installation work is completed, the shelf is turned over and suspended on the springs;
  • the chains are tensioned using a magnetic corner, which is used as a holder;
  • when tightening the sprockets, keys are used, which are pre-made from Grover;
  • the drive handle for the bending machine is made with a rotating tube;
  • The jack on such a homemade device is installed on a suspended platform, for which bolted connections and welding are used.

Manufacturing of hydraulic pipe bender

On the Internet you can find many photos and videos of how to make your own device for bending profile pipes with a hydraulic drive. The process of manufacturing such a pipe bender, equipped with a hydraulic cylinder, injection device and pipe stops, is a rather labor-intensive undertaking.

In the drawing and in the design of such a pipe bender, the following elements can be distinguished:

  • hydraulic jack with a lifting capacity of at least 5 tons;
  • shoe;
  • rollers in the amount of 2–3 pieces;
  • powerful metal channel;
  • thick metal plates and other parts.

To make the required bend of a profile pipe using a hydraulic device, it is necessary to insert it into the shoe and fix both ends. After this, you need to use a jack, which, with its rising rod, presses on the roller, which acts on the pipe and bends it. Once the required bend angle is obtained, the process can be stopped and the pipe can be removed from the pipe bender by turning the jack handle several times in the opposite direction.

To make your own hydraulic bending device for profile pipes, a photo of which can be easily found on the Internet, you must follow the following procedures.

  • Based on the drawing or photo, a structure for mounting the shoe and rollers, as well as the equipment frame, are made.
  • A metal plate is attached to the lower platform on which the jack will be installed. After this, such a device is secured with bolts and a drive handle is installed on it.
  • The most important thing is to find suitable rollers for the profile pipe, which should tightly grip the working part. If desired, rollers for the profile pipe, which are installed on the channel at the same height, can be made with your own hands. The shoe is installed below the rollers, and their relative position is determined by the required bending radius.
  • To fix the rollers and shoe, bolts are used, the holes for which are made according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing.

Methods for bending pipes using a homemade machine

The question of how to bend a profile pipe using a homemade pipe bender is unlikely to confuse you if you read a few more recommendations. Hydraulic machines can be used to successfully bend profile pipes made of different materials, as well as thick-walled products. This operation can be performed using either a cold or hot method, which involves preheating the pipe section.

Thus, a manual hydraulic bending machine can be used to influence the pipe in two ways:

Another variation with a jack

Cold bending is the simplest bending method, which is used for pipes made of plastic materials. The subtlety of this process is to fill the pipe before the flexible pipe with sand, salt, oil or cold water. This allows you to get a better bend without significant deformation of the pipe.

If you are interested in the question of how to properly bend a profile pipe with thick walls or made from materials of increased rigidity, then the answer to this question is to use the hot bending method.

Useful tips

The question of how to bend a profile pipe as accurately as possible and without unnecessary labor costs will be answered by several useful tips from qualified specialists.

Removable rollers of different shapes will allow you to comfortably work not only with profile pipes, but also with round ones.

  • In manual pipe benders for bending profile pipes, you can not use sprockets, but assemble a structure based on one drive roller. Instead of a pressure screw, such pipe benders often use a jack.
  • If you are bending according to a template, then to prevent the pipe from sliding off it, you can use metal hooks as stops.
  • If you need to bend a profile pipe under a large radius, it is best to use a pipe bender with three rollers.
  • To get a more versatile bending machine, you can make its thrust rollers movable. This way you can change the bend radius of the pipe.

In the video below, the master shares his experience in building a pipe bender from scrap materials.

In order to strictly observe the dimensions of the required pipe bend, it is best to perform this operation using a template made of wood. Even the simplest manual pipe bender using such a template will allow you to bend a profile pipe with precise compliance with the specified parameters. By the way, such templates are mainly made for the implementation of the simplest manual bending methods.

How to make a pipe bender with your own hands

It happens that you need to bend a metal pipe, but there is nothing to do it with. Human strength is not enough to make a bend evenly without damaging the structure itself. To do this, you need a tool - a pipe bender, which is sold in stores and the construction market.

But it’s possible to make it yourself in a garage with a minimum of equipment.

Even budget versions cost more than homemade ones. And if you need a homemade pipe bender for a profile pipe for specific work and will no longer need it, there is no point in buying it.

What is a pipe bender and where is it needed?

Before installing a pipe bender for a profile pipe, you need to learn more about the tool. This is old equipment used for pipe bending. Why can't this be done with ordinary human power? Metal is easily deformed if pressure is applied to it from the sides.

The span of human hands is simply not enough to make it possible to deform a pipe in a particular section of the pipeline.
A machine for bending a profile pipe with your own hands not only makes the bend correctly. It accurately determines the angle of inclination. You can set the parameters depending on your specific needs.

This procedure does not require much effort.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IYuk41JNRY

The equipment can be made of metal. It is advisable to take steel as it meets the standard of hardness and strength that we need. Aluminum has a shorter service life. But if there are no other materials at hand, it will do.

You definitely can’t use plastic, as its strength will not be enough to resist the pressure of the metal.
You can make the equipment for yourself. Several types are available to the homemaker, differing in type of design. The angle can be fixed during assembly.

Typically, in factory models it corresponds to a range of up to one hundred and eighty degrees.

Kinds

A bending machine for profile pipes, even in a garage, can be of several types. You can use materials that are not needed in everyday life.

Structurally, they have the following differences:

Hydraulic

A type of machine that operates on fluid power. Allows you to bend pipes with a diameter of up to 8 centimeters, so it is often found in production. It is rarely used at home, since we do not need such indicators. But when installing a metal heating pipeline it will be useful. A hydraulic pipe bender is not suitable for thin-walled round pipes, since its deformation method is too rough.

Manual

Popular for home use, but cannot be used for bending wide pipes. A simple design based on elementary physics. Everyone has the components for assembly in their garage. Suitable for non-hardened steel, low-carbon ferroalloys, non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, various types of their alloys).

Electromechanical

They are difficult to assemble on their own, but have high performance. They create pinpoint precision and can bend thin-walled tubes without damaging the walls.

Hybrid

They represent a combination of electric and hydraulic axes.

Bending Methods

Additionally, the method of bending itself differs:

  1. Crossbow. For bending, a pre-prepared shape is used, which is suitable for a specific type of pipe. Do-it-yourself crossbow profile bending is a common machine in garages.
  2. Spring.

    The spring mechanism provides not only high-quality bending, but also does not create destructive deformations.

  3. Segmental. It differs in that bending occurs with the help of a segment that pulls the pipe towards itself.
  4. Bezdornovy. Deformation occurs by winding the profile onto a roller.
  5. Dornovy.

    The mechanism is similar to the previous one. The main difference is the installation of additional filler, which prevents corrugation from forming.

Necessary materials

A hydraulic pipe bender for a round pipe is designed in a very simple way. You can use ready-made drawings that the Internet is full of. Under They are available for any garage size. There are many designs, the choice of which is determined by the available materials.

If you don’t want to go to a hardware store and spend money, look in the bins.
Some parts can be ordered from turners and milling machines. Often, homebuilders choose a frontal design, which is inexpensive and easy to assemble.

It consists of:

  • Three rollers – metal;
  • Drive chain;
  • Axes for rotation;
  • The mechanism of movement, which will produce bending;
  • Metal profile to make the frame.

Do-it-yourselfers, in order to save money, install rollers from available materials such as wood, plastic or polyurethane. The problem here is the theory of cutting. Metal is much stronger and denser. Therefore, the roller may not withstand the pressure and crack. There is no need to save money and install metal ones.

To understand how a pipe bender for a profile pipe bends with your own hands, you need to understand the technology. Often, conventional types of rolling and rolling are used. They allow you to work even with thin-walled tubes without destroying them and leaving them suitable for use.

To make a bend, the pipe must be installed between the rollers. Next, you need to turn the handle, after which deformation will be carried out according to the specified parameters.

You can make pipe benders for profile pipes from a jack. If it is in the garage, you already have half of the machine ready. After assembly, the jack can be removed.

To do this you will need:

  • Car jack;
  • Frame;
  • Springs (necessarily high-precision);
  • Three rollers;
  • Drive chain;
  • Consumables.

You can watch the video below to see how a manual profile bender works. To obtain the result, the installed pipe is bent using rollers.

By turning the handle, the drive chain is set in motion, which produces the bend itself.

Instructions for making a pipe bender

Manufacturing the bender is simple if you follow these instructions:

  1. Gears, bearings and rings are attached to the pressure shaft, which are connected to each other using a key. Before assembly, you need to draw up a thorough drawing with the prescribed indicators of all elements. Often they have to be turned separately.

    If you don't know how to use a lathe, trust a turner. You will need a total of three separate shafts. 2. Holes are made in the rings. They will be needed for grooves and threaded connections.

  2. You need to install a shelf. A steel channel is best, which will provide sufficient pressure on the shaft.
  3. After this you will need to assemble the entire structure.

    If possible, use a welding machine. A welded connection is the most reliable solution. It does not vibrate. If you don't have a welder, you can use bolts. In some areas, thick steel perforated plates will be required.

  4. The penultimate stage is the installation of the shelf. A pressure roller is installed on it through a spring. Residual rollers are mounted on the sides.

    A handle is attached to one of them.

  5. Lastly, the jack is installed.

Some nuances:

  • The roller is installed on a shelf, to which a nut for the spring is first welded;
  • Tension must be done using a magnetic corner, which largely acts as a holder;
  • The jack is mounted on a hinged platform (if you want to use it separately, use bolted fastenings).

Hydraulic work bender - instructions

You can also make a pipe bender for metal-plastic pipes with hydraulic traction yourself. The disadvantage is the complexity of assembly.

You will need:

  • A jack with a lifting capacity of at least five tons;
  • Shoe platform;
  • Shafts;
  • Massive channel;
  • Thick steel sheets and consumables.

To produce the device, you need to install a hydraulic jack in the shoe. You need to fix it correctly on both sides. To do this, you can use a welding machine or bolts.

After this, the pressure on the jack ensures high-quality bending of the pipe. Having achieved the required angle, it is enough to remove the product and use it for its intended purpose. To make a device, you need to adhere to the following plan:

  1. Make a detailed drawing. It needs to describe the dimensions of each individual element. Their production can be ordered from a turner.
  2. The lower platform acts as a platform for the jack. To use it in the future, fasten it with bolts, not welding.
  3. Rollers are an important part of the design. Its problem is that they have strict requirements for accuracy. You can make them yourself. The shoe is mounted lower, and their ratio determines the permissible bending angle.

Making a compact snail pipe bender

Products made from the “Snail” profile pipe received this name because it acts as a force template. This is a stencil that is needed specifically to obtain the correct shape of a flat spiral.

In the process, the tube is pressed tightly against the stencil, forming even spiral shapes. In their design, they resemble machines for sealing glass jars.

A snail is a flat steel plastic (at least four millimeters thick). A stencil part in the form of a spiral is installed on it. The problem is that its production requires, at a minimum, a milling machine or a good hand milling machine.

You can't do without a propane cutter. This is a type of torch that allows you to heat metal and then bend it.

Factory models are equipped with a pin and bolt system.

Each part is replaceable, allowing you to make different bends.

Types of methods

A pipe bender for metal-plastic pipes is a basic machine that operates on one mechanics. The machine is indispensable for pipelines, including thick-walled and metal-plastic ones. It can work with different types of metal (steel, aluminum, copper, zinc and their alloys). For greater productivity, the bend areas can be pre-red to release the metal, relieve internal stress and make it softer.

Cold method

Common in garage craftsmanship. If you don’t have a blowtorch or burner, you can use it. The disadvantage is that it requires more effort. Cold metal is harder and can crack. Therefore only suitable for raw steel and soft non-ferrous metals. Safer compared to hot rolling, since you don’t have to work with high temperatures.

Hot method

Requires a torch and blowtorch. Heating relieves stress from the metal and therefore it becomes more pliable, but this is only relevant for thin-walled pipes. Thick-walled tubes cannot be heated to more than 300 degrees in a garage.

Useful tips

You learned how to make a pipe bender with your own hands. But it is better to follow a few additional tips:

  1. To work with different pipe profiles, make removable shafts. To bend thick-walled steel, you will need hardened shafts. Only the top layer can be processed.
  2. If the pipe slips when working with the template, install securing hooks on the sides.
  3. To bend large-diameter pipes with thick walls, install at least three rollers, which will be enough for comfortable work. It is desirable that they be harder than the material being bent.

    To do this, you can harden the surface of the steel roller.

How to make a pipe bender with your own hands - how to make a simple device at home

Not only industrial specialists have to bend profile and round pipes, but also craftsmen at home. For one-time use, it is enough to contact the employees of the metalworking shop. But it’s even better to know how to make a pipe bender with your own hands if you have to transform many identical sections, for example, to build a greenhouse or covered shed.

The operating principle of these devices is based on the laws of mechanics. If you delve into the design features of any mechanism for obtaining a workpiece of a certain curvature, it is obvious that there is nothing complicated about them.

What types of devices are there for transforming pipes?

Transforming the curvature of a thin-walled pipe of small diameter is a completely accessible stage in obtaining metal blanks for frame-type structures.

It is enough to look at the drawings and photos of pipe benders, and it will become obvious that structurally they have a lot in common:

  • base (support, emphasis);
  • frame or frame (open or closed);
  • strips, pipe stops or holders;
  • screws or vice for fastening;
  • injection, mechanical or operating device (alternative power part).

Important: To constantly work with flexible profile pipes, you need a hydraulic pipe bender, which greatly facilitates the process of forming the curvature of the desired radius.

The forming of aluminum, standard steel and metal-plastic pipes can be done using the simplest manual template-type device.

Most pipe benders resemble a compact machine, but they have their own classification:

  • by type of impact on pipes (running, winding, drawing, rolling);
  • moving if possible (stationary and portable).

The drive type is also different:

  • electric;
  • manual;
  • hydraulic;
  • electrohydraulic.

If you use an electric drive or a hydraulic jack, it will take on the entire power load, saving time and effort. But its construction requires at least basic knowledge and experience in constructing household machines for metal processing. But such devices are several times cheaper than ready-made devices and their repeated rental.

Important: When making a manual pipe bender with your own hands, drawings, a few simple parts and an understanding of the operating principle are enough.

The most popular and simplest in design are manual pipe benders of the template type. By bending around a profile or regular pipe along part of its circumference, a section of pipe is transformed at a given angle or the required curvature.

How to make different types of pipe benders?

The principle of operation of pipe benders is different - you can influence a section of pipe in different ways. For example, a spring-type device will help deform polymer pipes due to pressure. Segmental devices will stretch them, giving them curvature.

The method of making a template pipe bender is accessible even to a beginner. To do this, you need to accurately draw a part of a circle of the required diameter (or other type of curvature). This hemisphere or other curve is drawn on a wooden blank, as in the photo of a homemade template-type pipe bender.

The resulting part must be fixed on a stable base along the plane (wall, table).

Attention: the wooden shield for the round template must be wider than the pipe that surrounds it, so that the attached part does not come off during processing. The pipe must pass between the stop fixed at the base and the template.

After the template stop is ready, you need to figure out how to use a pipe bender of this type. This is clear from the drawing - the pipe is secured between the template and the thrust beam.

By exposing the opposite end to a heated aluminum or thin steel billet, the desired bend is obtained. If it is necessary to obtain segments of different curvature, several suitable templates are made.

Pipe bender options

Another way is to obtain a segment of the required circle using metal hooks nailed to a plane, as in the photo. This is the cheapest bending method, however, you need reliable hooks and a pliable pipe. The advantage of this device is that these hooks can always be broken along a different line in order to bend workpieces of a different radius.

Pipe benders for converting profile pipes are much more complicated - they require more force to deform. But with a powerful device with pressure rollers, not inferior to its hydraulic counterpart, in everyday conditions you can obtain any curvature, even an ideal circle.

Bending of the workpiece is carried out using rollers and a cylinder - winding or rolling is performed, and the cylinder moves freely.

To build a pipe bender, you need parts as in the drawing - plates and angles, a stop and a handle.

Pipe bender: review and analysis of options for home-made structures, calculations, drawings, implementation

When setting up a household, sooner or later you are faced with the need to bend a pipe. In a city apartment - less often, but also.

The prices for pipe bending tools and accessories, both for sale and for rent, are not exactly exorbitant, but, to put it mildly, they are not encouraging.

Therefore, there are more than enough people who want to make a pipe bender with their own hands, and the purpose of this publication is to help them find a design suitable for their specific purpose and give effective practical recommendations for its manufacture.

Amateur craftsmen make a wide variety of installations for bending pipes, from simple devices to real bending machines, see figure:

Homemade pipe benders

But a considerable part of homemade pipe benders bend according to the principle “as it happened, so it will be.” At the same time, those who happened to see the insides of an airplane or rocket probably noticed the bundles and intricacies of pipes, bent, sometimes in the most bizarre way, cleanly and evenly “just like it was.” But no “highly cosmic” secrets, respectively. no production equipment.

At aerospace factories, pipe bending is done by low-level workers or even apprentices. The secrets lie in the correct proportions of certain features of the manufacture of pipe bending machines and devices and in choosing the type that is suitable for a particular job.

In this article, these “secrets” are revealed, with an emphasis on a pipe bender for a profile pipe, since, on the one hand, it is professional pipes that are most needed in private households, and on the other hand, their bending is much more difficult than round ones.

Note : the rest of the article discusses cold flat production-technological and, in part, decorative-art bending. So, if you are eager to set up mass mechanized production in your own barn, well, say, hyperbolic coils for moonshine stills, then see somewhere else.

Bending defects

At military councils, it is customary first of all to report on the enemy. So we will begin our debriefing with what needs to be avoided.

Typical pipe bending defects are shown on the left in the figure:

Defects in bending of round and profile pipes

For household and other general purpose pipelines, taffy and wave are acceptable, which together reduce the lumen area of the pipe by no more than 10% at the narrowest point. On pipes for gases and refrigerants, any stretch and, especially, a wave, are undesirable, because There may be microcracks there. A wave, even a small one, is unacceptable in tubular power elements of building structures and mechanisms, since it sharply and unpredictably reduces their load-bearing capacity.

A characteristic defect in bending rectangular corrugated pipes is a “propeller” (in the center in the figure), when the pipe twists along its axis during the bending process. An arch or semi-arch that is bent with a “propeller” is most often impossible to fix until it is suitable for use. The reason for the “propeller” is the asymmetrical distribution of technological loads during bending, and bending equipment for profile pipes must ensure their correct spreading over the workpiece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEQAq_tjitg

Another characteristic defect, but of round thin-walled pipes made of soft metals (copper, aluminum) is a “bun” (on the right in the figure), an external and/or internal longitudinal scar; Most often, the flattening of the pipe is noticeable to the eye, hence the name. There will definitely be a microcrack in the “bun” somewhere.

A chronic leak in the house water supply or an air conditioner losing freon is not a cheap “fix”, but a leak from the fuel pipeline is simply dangerous. Building structures that include tubular elements with a “bun” are prone to sudden destruction.

The reason for the “bun” of bent pipes is the incorrect choice and/or setting of a pipe bender.

Main rules

The main causes of defects in pipe bending are incorrect (usually too small) bending radius and a short technological shank (“tail”), the distance from the end of the pipe closest to the bend to its beginning. The “tail” is needed not only for reliable fastening of the pipe, the “tail” is also an absorber for the release of technological stresses. A perfectly correct pipe bender can produce a wave or a defect (parasitic bend).

The rules for choosing the bending radius of the pipe RIZG and the length of the technological shank L are summarized in the table:

The “tail” is needed at the beginning of the bend, i.e. the pipe is fed into the pipe bender with some excess at the outlet. RIGB values are calculated for defect-free bending. If the permissible defects (see above) are acceptable, then RIZG can be reduced by one step. way:

  • If the difference between the real and the nearest tabulated values of the pipe diameter P is more than 10%, the values of the initial calculated values are calculated by interpolation. Otherwise, we take the nearest one.
  • The tabulated RIZG is reduced to the relative value rIZG, i.e. It is expressed in pipe diameters D or heights H.
  • For pipes with a diameter of up to 10 mm, 1 is subtracted from rIG.
  • For pipes with a diameter of 11 to 15 mm, 0.85 is subtracted from rIG.
  • For pipes with a diameter of 16 to 24 mm, 0.75 is subtracted from rIG.
  • For pipes with a diameter of 25 to 40 mm, 0.65 is subtracted from rIG.
  • For pipes with a diameter of more than 40 mm, 0.5 is subtracted from rIG.
  • Convert the relative rIZG back to the numerical (millimeter) RIZG.
  • From the obtained value of RIZG, take the nearest practically convenient larger one.

Example: you need to bend 24x24x1.5 from a steel pipe, i.e. already classified as thin-walled, complex semi-arches for a flower house or hut. The structure is non-residential, light, the complex semi-arch is not a load-bearing structure (see below), i.e. "plumbing" wave and taffy are acceptable. We take data for the pipe H=25. According to the table we find rIZG = RIZG/H = 80 mm/25 mm = 3.2.

Subtract the correction (for pipe H=25!): 3.2 – 0.65 = 2.55. Convert back to millimeters (again according to the table H=25!): 2.55x25 = 63.75 mm. Those.

, if we take a new bending radius of 65 mm instead of the “defect-free” 80, then the selection of bending devices and work will be simplified, the possibilities of artistic expression by the shape of the structure will increase, and there will be no visible and/or dangerous defects in the finished structure.

Note : For some types of pipe bending devices, e.g. mandrel and 3-roller, see below, the initial (starting) “tail” does not seem to be needed. But its role in this case is played by the not yet bent remainder of the workpiece, so it is impossible to cut the original pipe in advance exactly to size, otherwise it will be defective.

A cut for a single “tailless” product, for example. a curl for cold forging, cut in stock for the “back tail” the same as the “front”.

The stock goes to waste, so it is better to bend products without straight sections at the beginning and/or end in batches sequentially from one pipe, then only the very last “tail” will go to waste.

Simple - radius

A specific pipe bender is designed for a bend radius within certain limits. But to select a design prototype, you immediately need to know only its very general meaning:

  1. to small radii RIZG

How to make a simple pipe bender with your own hands - available options

:

When working with pipes, there is often a need to change the shape of the pipe, in other words, to bend it. This can be done using special equipment, or even buy a ready-made product. But it is much easier and cheaper to make a simple pipe bender with your own hands. Using such a simple tool will greatly facilitate and speed up your work.

The simplest design

Anyone can make the simplest manual pipe bender with their own hands. To make such a basic device, it is enough to have a concrete slab, a drill for working with concrete and steel pins (you need a lot of them).

You can make a homemade manual pipe bender without any drawings and in just three steps:

  1. A square grid with cell sides measuring 4 by 4 or 5 by 5 cm is drawn on a concrete slab.
  2. In the nodes of the mesh, holes are drilled for metal rods using an appropriate drill (if possible, they need to be deepened as much as possible).
  3. At the end of the operation, steel rods are driven into the workpiece.

The result is a homemade pipe bender for a round pipe, which can bend pipes with a diameter of up to 25 mm. The process itself is extremely simple: the pipe is installed between the pins and bent in the desired direction. The radius of curvature can be changed by moving the pipe diagonally between the steel rods.

The advantages of a pipe bender made according to this design are obvious: this tool is extremely easy to manufacture, and parts can be quickly replaced if necessary. The disadvantages of the device are its bulkiness and the need to exert significant effort during operation.

Alternative scheme

Another option for making a homemade pipe bender is to make a composite structure from steel rods and a jack.

Making such a device is also quite easy:

  1. Metal rods are driven parallel to each other into a perpendicular surface (for example, a wall).
  2. The jack is placed on a rigid pedestal (foundation) so that the projection of the axis of its rod is in the middle between the rods.

The process of bending the pipe is carried out as follows: a piece of the required length is placed between the pins and the jack, after which, by lifting the jack rod, the required curvature of the pipe is achieved.

This design is more complicated than the first option, but there is an obvious advantage - the presence of a pneumatic (hydraulic) mechanism, which allows you to bend products of a fairly large diameter. Making a pipe bender with a jack requires a strong vertical support and a stable location of the lifting mechanism.

Homemade pipe bender for profile pipes

A profile pipe, the cross-section of which has a shape different from round (rectangular, square or oval), is much more difficult to bend due to its inconvenient geometry and the presence of stiffening ribs.

How to make a homemade pipe bender

The construction market is filled with many options for such a device as an industrial pipe bender, but is it worth buying a professional pipe bender just to bend two or three pipes? A homemade tool can handle this task quite well. Moreover, it is easy to manufacture and operate.

Although it seems that it is easy, bending pipes is not so simple, because if the tool is not selected correctly, then this is fraught with various defects and deformations, which, in turn, impair the throughput of the pipes and reduce their strength characteristics.

For this reason, when selecting a tool, the compatibility of such indicators as the characteristics of the pipe and the operating principle of the device is taken into account.

Different pipes have different minimum bend radii. To determine it, use the following table:

Of course, the bend radius of the pipe may be smaller, but you need to remember that the bend will be of lower quality.

A simple homemade pipe bender - the first option

The easiest way to bend a pipe is to use a special template. It is worth saying that in this way it is possible to bend not only aluminum but also steel pipes.

To make a template, you will have to use wooden boards that are slightly thicker than the pipe being bent. To prevent the pipe from slipping out of the template during work, sawing the boards is done at an angle.

The joined boards should be secured to the top of a table or other convenient base. A stop designed to hold the bent pipe is also fixed on the same base. The simplest model of pipe bender is ready.

The pipe to be bent is placed so that there is a template on one side and a stop on the other. Now, take the pipe from the opposite end and slowly bend it. To make this work easier, use a lever that can be inserted into the pipe or placed on top of it.

Do not try to bend the pipe in the center of the template, as this is not only difficult, but also prone to breakage.

A simple homemade pipe bender - the second option

The production of a similar template can be done using metal hooks, which are fixed on top of the plywood sheet in accordance with the fold line. This design is good because the fold line can be adjusted by simply inserting hooks.

Simple pipe bender - the third option

Using simple pipe benders, you can bend not only thin-walled pipes, but also thick-walled products. To do this, use a hand winch.

Using a similar design, it is possible to bend even powerful profile pipes. But to do this, the wooden template must not have a bevel, and the pipe must be fixed using several stops at once.

Simple pipe bender - fourth option

This pipe bender is homemade. When manufacturing it, the most difficult thing is to select or make the necessary templates and rollers, since the girth of the pipe is directly related to the quality of the bend.

If the pipe bender is intended to be used to bend soft metal pipes, then it may be appropriate to replace the steel rollers and templates with similar parts made of hardwood.

The production of rollers can be done using a lathe. In addition, the roller can be cut using a jigsaw.

To do this, you need to take hard plywood and cut out several circles with different diameters and slopes on the desired side. When the circles are ready, they can be fastened into a single whole.

At the final stage, the part should be processed using sandpaper. To give the product greater strength, it should be fastened with metal plates.

To obtain a large radius bend, it is best to use rolling pipe benders. Just like the previous pipe benders, they have a complex design.

In general, the complexity of a rolling pipe bender is mainly determined by the material from which the pipe being bent is made.

If you plan to use the tool for bending soft pipes, the material of its working surfaces can be wood. Because wood components are quite simple to produce and at the same time cheap. They can be easily replaced with new ones if they wear out.

If the use of wooden parts is not possible, they can be replaced with metal ones.

As you can see, this tool mainly uses wooden parts. The material of the rollers in this version is polyurethane, but they can also be made of wood.

Also, the rollers can be replaced with bearings. But, with this option, care should be taken to ensure that the pressure bearing does not rotate.

The drawings that I gave to the turner:

The smaller the gap from one roller to another, the greater the effort that will have to be made to bend and push the pipe through. Otherwise, the bend will have a minimum radius, and in a certain area the pipe will not bend at all.

To make a more universal tool, when designing, you should take care of the possibility of installing the side rollers further or closer.

Steel clamps should be installed on the sides to hold the part to be bent in a plane perpendicular to the axial lines of the rollers.

If this is not done, the pipe bend will be spiral.

The pressure roller in the pipe bender is tightened at the bottom, and for this purpose a metal strip is used, which has the required thread in the middle.

Simultaneously with the smooth tightening of the pressure roller of the device, the bent pipe is rolled along the pipe bender. During rolling, the fixing metal strip is rotated halfway, and the pipe passes in one direction.

When bending the pipe to a small radius, you will have to run it 50 - 100 times. To avoid deformation of the bending circle, the rolling speed of the pipe must be the same. If the pipe has a welded seam, you need to ensure that the location of the seam does not change during rolling.

That's all. Now you can easily make a pipe bender on your own. A homemade device will be in no way inferior to industrial options, and the result of its work will not leave you indifferent.
