What are OK 46 electrodes intended for?

People periodically ask what are you cooking? The answer is, we cook with fashionable, almost Swedish Esab electrodes, made in St. Petersburg and purchased in Moscow from the RusSvarka company. We weld steel with a thickness of up to 5 mm inclusive in threes. There are a ton of electrodes in the Esab catalog - we use OK46.00 - a very easy-to-use electrode. We also took a box of OK 53.70 for testing - a type of electrode for critical seams - but for our needs it is absolutely inconvenient.

It is also very difficult to re-ignite the electrode; that is, it is absolutely not suitable for making tacks (short seams a couple of centimeters long). We decided that 53.70 is intended for long seams without tearing. But here, by definition, we cannot have long seams; to combat welding deformations, everything must be welded with short seams, about 7 centimeters.

10. A little not about electrodes, but also on topic - ESAB OrigoTech chameleon mask. This is an average mask. Costs about 6 thousand. Seems normal. Colleagues don't like it. I rarely use it myself; I usually cook with a classic shield. The toad does not give money for a good 3M SpeedGlas (40-60 thousand). Yes, in general there is no need - happiness is not in a mask.

Update:

How to dry electrodes ESAB OK 46.00

Electrodes of approx. 46.00 are good not only because of the plasticity of the arc (although when welding in complex geometries this sometimes dents - the arc does not go out), but also because of their unpretentiousness to the conditions. At the end of December, half a pack of electrodes was forgotten on the boat under the unfinished roof of the cabin. They lay there for three months.

When I found them in March, they were all raw; water flowed down like a stream after the rain and the cardboard pack fell apart, but the coating of the electrodes was not damaged. Previously, I would have thrown them away, but now (March 2016) there is a crisis, so there’s no time for fat.

Yes, plus, during the three months of my absence from the shipyard, some comrades put their hands into my supplies and there were electrodes left - as in Chizh’s song - one pack) So I carefully brought them into a heated room and put them on the radiator to dry. They dried out in three days and today I cooked wonderfully with them.

In principle, there is a drying oven for electrodes at 300 degrees, but they seem to cook just fine anyway. But it is wise to dry the electrodes in a special drying oven.

I wish everyone success in welding! )))

Electrodes OK-46

OK-46 type filler materials are universal consumables for welding work, suitable for any position in space. They also perform optimally when working with alternating and direct current.

The main target materials include structural and carbon steels, which are used in a variety of products. They can be used in repairs, making metal structures and other engineering products. It should be noted that OK-46 filler materials burn well, even when choosing gentle welding modes at low current levels. They can be easily re-ignited, even if there is a burnt coating or a melted end.

With OK-46 3 mm electrodes you can easily weld galvanized surfaces and products with a galvanic layer. They are suitable for high-quality connections with a gap, because the materials have low heat input.

A high level of manufacturability of the compounds is ensured by a low level of sensitivity to existing contaminants. Thanks to the dense coating and stable arc burning, optimal protection from environmental factors is provided.

Such electrodes are used in different conditions. When welding, there is minimal metal spattering, which is due to the possibility of using low currents.

You can protect yourself from the bright glow of the arc and splashes with special devices, including a welding mask.

The best characteristics of the electrodes appear during the processing of seams in which the root is located at a great depth. It is not advisable to use such filler materials in the manufacture of long welds, because they are intended for work over short distances.

OK-46 welding electrodes can be used to make strong tack welds, which are created before installing metal structures. They are sold in boxes, rewound with a sealed film, which protects the coating from moisture during transportation or storage in a warehouse.

This problem is the most common, which is why manufacturers have provided simple safety measures, preventing repeated transportation and long-term storage of products.

Scope of use

OK-46 type electrodes with a diameter of 3 mm can be used as the main filler material required to fill the area of fixation of metal parts. They can be used as an additional material in creating tacks during welding of stainless steel, other metals or the construction of large-scale metal structures. OK-46 electrodes are distinguished by strong connections in various conditions.

Typically, welders use them in on-site repairs. OK-46 is also used in workshops when working with carbon steels or making new products from structural steels.

Technological characteristics

In the process of selecting filler materials of the OK-46 type, the main role is played by technological parameters, which depend on the composition of the electrodes. In this case, even a difference in a tenth of a certain component can affect the further behavior of the filler material during welding and the mechanical characteristics of the completed seam. They contain 0.4% manganese, 0.08% carbon, 0.03% sulfur, 0.025% phosphorus and 0.3% silicon.

Mechanical parameters are determined not at the electrode, but at the deposited weld. This helps determine the possibility of using a given brand in certain conditions in which the finished product will be used.

Therefore, you need to focus on the main positions in space and the following parameters:

  •  tensile strength 510 N/mm2;
  •  research temperature +20°C;
  •  impact strength – 140 J/cm2;
  •  relative elongation 28%;
  •  relative yield of deposited metal 96%;
  •  the angle of greatest bend of the weld seam is 150 degrees;
  •  the number of filler materials for 1 kilogram of weld is 1.7 kg.

Product selection

The smallest diameter of the electrodes is 0.2 cm. Simultaneously with the diameter, the length of the electrodes increases:

  •  with a size of 0.2 cm, the length is 0.3 m;
  •  with a diameter of 0.25 and 0.3 cm - 0.35 m;
  •  with a size of 0.4 cm - 0.45 m;
  •  with a diameter of 0.5 cm, the length of the consumable is 0.35 m.

Characteristics of the surfacing process

Surfacing must be done in small sections, even if a long seam is applied. To avoid any difficulties during welding, you should strictly adhere to the operating modes. For each diameter of the electrode rod and its position, certain parameters are established, with the observance of which a high-quality process is obtained.

Technical characteristics and decoding of the OK-46 electrode brand

International cooperation and globalization are promoting production developments of Western companies to the Russian market. Welding electrodes OK-46, SEOK-46, E46 with rutile coating in accordance with the import substitution program replaced Lincoln Electric's Omnia 46 and ESAB's OK 46.00 on the market.

Electrodes OZS-12 and OK-46, what is the difference?

OZS 12 forms a connection of high quality parts at low currents. With rods Ø 2–3 mm, reliable welding is carried out with the transformer connected to a 220 V household network. Many indicators of OZS 12 and E46 are the same:

  • There are no restrictions on the spatial position of the seam.
  • The use of direct and alternating current (AC/DC) sources is allowed.
  • Polarity limitation, straight only.
  • Low demands on the cleanliness of cutting.
  • Resistance of the deposited metal to fatigue deformation, which contributes to the durability of the connections.
  • The coating helps protect the seam, the slag crust is uneven, and individual fragments are difficult to remove.
  • The suture surface tends to be concave.
  • Long-term transfer of static loads.
  • Uniformity and stability of maintaining arc combustion.
  • Recommended for pipe and T-joints.
  • No tendency to crack.
  • Re-ignition without sticking.

OZS 12, in comparison with welding electrodes OK-46, requires calcination with a temperature increase of 50% . The quality of the seam increases when welding with a long arc. Up to 60% of the electrode weight goes to waste and slag formation.

The coating has an atypical increased moisture absorption in the rutile family. Large inclusions tend to get baked in, and manual cleaning of the seam is labor-intensive.

E46A, technical specifications

E46A provide a weld with increased ductility and toughness due to a decrease in the proportion of sulfur and phosphorus in the rod (S and P in the range of 0.04–0.045%). Designed to operate under variable loads, including dynamic and low temperatures. Low-alloy steels with a carbon content of up to 2%, such as 15HSND, 14G2, are welded. Heat loads above 2000 are not desirable.

Analogs similar in weld quality: OMNIA-46, OK 48.00, OK Femax 38.95, Pipeweld 6010. Type E46A includes the following brands:

  • With cellulose-rutile coating – SE-46-00, SZSM 46.00;
  • With the main coating of the rod and the creation of an alkaline environment in the weld pool (neutralization of hydrogen against cracking) - ANO-8, UONI-13/45A, UONI-13/55K;
  • With the inclusion of iron powder VN48U and ITS-1.

The decoding of the alphanumeric indication informs about the basic technical data in accordance with GOST 9467-75:

  • E – electrode with external coating for manual electric arc welding;
  • 46 – value of temporary tensile strength in kg per mm2;
  • A – ductility and impact strength are designed for variable loads.

Welding process requirements include holding a short arc as a measure to eliminate porosity and lack of fusion . Calcination of electrodes for an hour at 3000 C before use.

Preference is given to direct current of reverse polarity. The requirements for surface cleanliness, especially regarding scale and rust, are high. Increasing the concentration of iron powder in the coating reduces the carbon content of the surfacing and the tendency to cracking.

E50

Structural low-alloy carbon steels, such as 15HSND, are welded with E50 electrodes at critical joints. The core rod is made from welding wire Sv-0.8.

Types of coated electrodes E50 include MGM-50K, UONI 13/55, ANO-21, SELB-52, OZS-12, MR-3S, E46. Spattering is negligible. The axial deviation of the electrode inclination angle is no more than 370. Welding of stainless, alloy steels and cast iron is excluded.

E50A

The scope of application has been expanded in comparison with OK-46A . In addition to pipeline and sea transport, products and structures with significant dynamic loads at low temperatures are included, including nuclear industry facilities.

Type E50A includes a number of interchangeable brands of Russian manufacturers based on Sv-08A welding wire: OZS-18, OZS-25, E-138/50N, ANO-TM, DSK-50U, TMU-21U, TMU-50, MTG-02, MTG-01K, TsU-5, TsU-5M. The coating is predominantly alkaline-basic.

The chemical composition of the overlay weld is identical. But the scope of application is different. Given the harsh operating conditions, universalization is impractical. The size of the coating layer and the variability of chemical components influence the process technology and are related to the purpose of the brand.

Foreign and domestic analogues suitable for replacing E50 electrodes, electrode brand: SE-08-00 (RF), OK 48.04 (Sweden), OK 53.70 (ESAB), Fox EV 50 (Germany), Phoenix K50 R (Germany), Garant (Germany) ), LB-52U (Japan).

The German brand Fox EV 50 compares favorably with its indifference to humidity due to water-repellent additives. TMU-21U is used primarily by oil and gas producers on Arctic pipelines.

Features and Limitations

The breaking load of the seam is determined to be 500 MPa with an additional margin of safety . At the same time, technological features introduce restrictions into the practice of application: for domestic brands of this type, only OZS-28 is available in a circular seam with a vertical descent from top to bottom. For others this is unacceptable.

UONI-13/55T, OZS-28, OZS-33 operate on welding machines with direct and alternating currents. Large group: UONI-13/55, UONI-13/55G, OZS-18, OZS-25, OZS-29, TMU-21U - are adapted exclusively for the use of direct current of reverse polarity.

The protective functions of alkaline coatings are based on the reaction of carbonates CaCO3, MgCO3 releasing carbon monoxide CO, which, as a reducing agent, absorbs oxygen, turning into carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide gas protection is retained until the solidifying slag sets.

For electrodes of the E50A type, a short arc is generally recommended . An hour-long drying of the coating is considered mandatory. Use is limited to 3–4 days. Wet electrodes burn unstably. Triple calcination is the limit. Heat treatment destroys the coating.

The criterion for selecting externally coated arc electrodes for welding structural alloys should take into account network capabilities and personal skill. OZS-12 are considered easy to ignite and operate, while UONI 13/55 requires an experienced hand, especially during intermittent actions.

Due to the fact that the manufacturer has a large sales network, consumables can be purchased almost everywhere. Some buyers say they are overpriced. However, the vast majority of craftsmen are inclined to believe that electrodes have the optimal combination of price and quality.

The plant's products are manufactured in accordance with quality certificates and comply with GOST E46.

Properties and characteristics

One of the most obvious advantages of the product is the rapid ignition of the arc and its stable combustion. This allows even beginners to feel confident when welding with these electrodes. A stable arc also allows for a uniform and tight connection.

Another positive point is the ability to cook even on dirty and rusty surfaces. By choosing Esab “OK 46.00”, you don’t have to worry about the condition of the edges. The surfaces to be welded do not need to be prepared by spending time cleaning off rust, dirt or coatings.

Electrodes can be used when welding large gaps. They perform well when working with marine and structural steels. They are convenient for placing potholders. An additional bonus is the ability to weld on galvanized materials.

It is also worth noting that when working with these electrodes, very little splashes appear. This not only saves metal, but also reduces the risk of welder burns.

Technical characteristics of electrodes:

  • coating: rutile;
  • surfacing: 8.5 g/Ah;

Electrodes ESAB ok 46 characteristics

Reading time: ≈3 minutes

Everyone who is at least a little familiar with welding has heard a lot about ESAB OK 46 electrodes. The reviews are surprising: almost all craftsmen praise this brand. They note that the quality of the seams has noticeably improved since purchasing these rods, and overall the job has become easier and faster. Is it so?

In this article we will try to tell you everything you need to know about OK 46.00 electrodes. We will also answer the question of whether it is worth buying these rods and using them in your work.

general information

OK 46 electrodes have a rutile-cellulose coating. This is the main characteristic due to which these electrodes gained their popularity. The ESAB 46 00 brand is truly unique, it elevates your work while making your work easier.

So what is so good about OK 46 electrodes, the technical characteristics of which none of the manufacturers can repeat? Firstly, this brand is absolutely insensitive to corrosion. This means you can weld in hard-to-reach places without having to strip the metal. Secondly, when welding with these electrodes, practically no slag is formed and is removed very easily. The seam is very smooth and smoothly transitions to the metal surface. Also, the electrodes are easily ignited, including re-ignition.

Also, welding with these electrodes requires a low open circuit voltage and a relatively low welding current. So OK 46 welding electrodes can be used in the country without any problems and welded from a regular power supply.

Are these electrodes worth buying? Definitely worth it. With them, your work will really become easier and faster. Welded joints will be of high quality and reliable. But provided that you follow the welding technology and select rods based on the characteristics of the metal that you are going to weld.

OK 46 has only two disadvantages: high price and frequent counterfeits. But we do not consider these disadvantages significant. After all, the price is not much higher than analogues, and the final quality of the seams is much better. Well, to avoid counterfeits, you need to buy electrodes from certified representatives or in large stores.

Technical characteristics of OK-46 electrodes

Welding electrodes OK-46 are universal consumables for welding, as they are suitable for almost all spatial positions. In addition, they perform normally when working with direct and alternating current.

The main target metals are carbon and structural, which covers a fairly large range of products. With their help, you can repair, as well as create metal structures and other engineering products. It is worth noting that OK-46 electrodes ignite well, even if gentle welding modes with low currents are selected.

This also applies to re-ignition when it is hampered by a melted end or burnt coating.

Welding electrodes OK -46 brand ESAB

Filler materials easily weld products with galvanized surfaces and other galvanic coatings. The electrodes are excellent for gap welding because they have a low heat input, which ensures a high-quality result even under such conditions. Increased manufacturability of the compound is achieved due to extremely low sensitivity to contamination.

Stable arc burning and dense coating provide a sufficient level of protection from the influence of extraneous factors. This variety can be found in any industry, since its qualities predispose to active use under any conditions, which is a definite advantage. During welding, a small percentage of metal spattering is observed, which is largely ensured by the ability to use low currents.

A welding helmet and other equipment will help protect against splashes and bright arc light.

OK-46 electrodes and welding fixtures

The properties are best demonstrated when working with seams whose roots lie quite deep. It is not recommended to create long seams using such electrodes, since they are more designed for creating short ones. Using this brand, you can obtain strong tacks created before installing metal structures.

Electrodes are supplied in tight boxes that protect the material during transportation. The items in the box are placed in a sealed film to prevent the coating from accumulating moisture while everything is in storage. This is a very common problem, so manufacturers have taken care of basic safety measures.

Thanks to this, repeated transportation and long-term storage are allowed.

Welding electrodes OK-46

Application area

OK-46 3mm electrodes can be used as the main filler material, which is necessary to fill the junction of metal parts, and as an additional one when it is necessary to create tacks.

Sometimes, when welding stainless steel or other metal, when creating a large metal structure, tacks are made with such electrodes, since they provide greater strength of the connection under any conditions.

They are most often used for on-site repairs, but can also be used in workshops when working with carbon steels or creating new structural steel products.

Specifications

When OK-46 electrodes are considered, the characteristics of their behavior are determined by their chemical composition. After all, here even a tenth of a percent of any substance can have a strong impact on subsequent behavior during welding, as well as on the mechanical properties of the finished seam.

Item name in composition, %

Welding electrodes ESAB OK 46.00

ESAB OK 46.00 welding electrodes have excellent welding and technological characteristics and are designed for welding structures made of low-carbon and low-alloy steels with a yield strength of up to 380 MPa in all spatial positions using direct current of reverse polarity and alternating current.

It is characterized by relatively low sensitivity to rust and other surface contaminants, ease of slag separation and the formation of a smooth surface of the weld bead with a smooth transition to the base metal. Due to the ease of both first and repeated ignitions, the electrode is indispensable for welding with short seams, root passes, tack welding and welding with periodic arc breaks.

Unlike most rutile electrodes, thanks to the ability to weld in the “vertical downhill” position, combined with significantly lower threshold values of the minimum current at which the arc burns stably, OK 46.00 allows you to weld thin-walled products, as well as use this electrode for welding galvanized parts.

Low open circuit voltage and stable arcing at extremely low currents allow the use of these electrodes for welding from household sources. Welding with electrodes of this type is characterized by reduced heat input, which makes it more attractive for welding wide gaps, especially during installation.
