Organization of a welding station
Reading time: ≈5 minutes
All welding students will sooner or later have to learn what a welding work station is. After all, it is during fasting that all your work will take place. The welding station does not have a clear definition, but we will try to briefly formulate it. So, a welding station is usually called a small area (it can be either in a workshop or on the street), equipped with all the necessary welding equipment and components for it.
Often, the equipment of a welding station consists of a welding machine, electrodes, gas cylinders (if necessary), cables, torches, clamps, tools for metal processing and in general everything that may be useful to you in your work. Sometimes the post even has personal protective equipment, such as masks or gloves. But this is just basic information. In this article we will tell you in detail everything about positions for an electric welder.
Varieties
There are two types of welding stations: stationary and mobile. Stationary stations are located in the workshop and are designed to work with small parts, since the working surface of welding tables is often limited. Mobile posts can be located both inside the workshop and outside. These can be small frames on wheels into which the equipment is built, or a special cart.
Let's take a closer look at each post type.
Stationary post
Below is a diagram of a stationary type welding station. In most cases, the stationary post is located in a separate cabin without a roof, but with closing screens. The area of such a cabin must be at least 3 m2.
A stationary welding station must be made of non-flammable materials, so the screens are made of polymers, and the frames are made of metal. The height of the cabin itself must be at least 2 meters. The interior walls of the cabin are coated with a fire-resistant compound that does not support combustion.

Each stationary post has not only equipment, but also a welding table. Its size is determined by the nature of the work. If welding is done in a sitting position, then the height of the table should be about 60-70 cm. If in a standing position, it should be from 85 and above. The size of the working surface must be at least 100x100 cm.
A separate requirement is good ventilation for the welding station. Local ventilation during welding can be either natural or forced. Forced ventilation is preferable. Local suction from the welding station is also necessary to quickly remove metal shavings, dust from grinding, etc.
Mobile post
The welding station for manual arc welding can be mobile or portable. Often, a mobile welding station can be set up with less effort, since it does not require compliance with many rules. There is no need to organize ventilation, observe the size of the working area, etc.
But what is worth doing is a canopy over the mobile station so that the welder can work in bad weather or under the sun. Also, the mobile post should have comfortable wheels so that even heavy equipment can be transported without much difficulty.
The mobile post must have compartments and niches for storing components. If this is a mobile gas welding station, then there must be space for a gas cylinder. Ventilation of the welding station can be natural, since work in most cases takes place outside.

What is a welding post - definition
A welding station is a welder’s workplace that has all the necessary equipment for welding metal products. The welding station has a welding machine or unit, a welding cable, a torch or electrode holder (depending on the welding methods), all the necessary tools and accessories, and a set of protective equipment for the welder himself.
There are two types of welding stations - stationary and mobile
- The stationary welding station and its equipment are an open-top cabin containing everything necessary for welding. In such posts welding of products of limited size can be carried out.
- A mobile welding station is usually equipped at a production site for welding large products or for repair and installation in the field. An example of a mobile welding station could be some types of SAC welding units. In particular, modifications of the Shindaiwa SAC.
- Mobile welding unit SAC DGW500-2S. Two-station. Diesel.Nom. current 250 / 480A
- Mobile unit SAC DGW400-2S. Two-post. Diesel.Nom. current 180 / 370A
- Welding unit SAC DGW310-2S. Single station. Diesel.Nom. current 280A
- Mobile welding unit SAC DGW500-4S. Two-station. Diesel.Nom. current 250 / 480A
They ensure autonomous operation of the welding team and, depending on the model, allow you to connect a power tool to the device (see demo video ►).
Requirements for organizing a welding station
Stationary must have:
- cabin with a steel frame, walls made of non-combustible materials and covered with fire-resistant paint,
- air exchange in the room is at least 40 m3/hour,
- good lighting,
- cabin area not less than 3 m2, height more than 2 m,
- table made of steel (2 cm thick) or cast iron (2.5 cm),
- mandatory grounding of all equipment,
- Under the welder’s feet there is a floor covered with rubber.
Mobile welding is usually associated with outdoor welding of large structures. It may have:
- protection from precipitation in the form of canopies,
- protection from the wind of the working area with special screens,
- tools and equipment in special cabinets,
- local light sources for lighting,
- among other things, mandatory grounding of all equipment.
A mobile post, which has all the necessary protection and equipment, can be organized, for example, with Shindaiwa welding units, which ensure the rapid deployment of a mobile welding post and its reliable operation in the absence of a stationary power supply.

Stationary and mobile welding stations: types and sizes
Welding is a necessary, habitual part of production processes. It is used in industrial enterprises, construction sites, and home workshops.
Like any technical process, it must be carried out safely. Both for the welder himself and for those around him. When working, it is necessary to comply with environmental protection requirements.
In addition, the workplace must provide the greatest possible comfort for the welder and be equipped with the necessary devices and tools for productive work.
Such a site, provided with the minimum necessary set of equipment, is usually called a welding station.
What is it - general provisions. Requirements for premises of stationary posts
First of all, completing the welding station and pre-setting its equipment allows you to avoid a long preparatory period . Start work 3-5 minutes after receiving the task.
However, in addition to reducing preparation time, it also solves other, no less important problems.
- Ensuring necessary sanitary conditions, for example, removing harmful gaseous derivatives.
- Ergonomic arrangement of necessary consumables: electrodes, welding wire, additives, gas cylinders.
- Placement of auxiliary equipment: clamps, vices, devices for preparing parts for welding, hammer, pliers, other accessories. At the same time ensuring safety and ease of use.
- Protection of the environment from harmful derivatives of the welding process.
- Ensuring the safety of people close to the work site.
The appearance and configuration of the system varies in complexity . From a small portable kit, such as a gas welding post PGU 5p, to a separate workshop with permanently installed equipment.
The brand of the mobile unit stands for “universal gas welding post”, and the number says that propane oxygen is packaged in 5-liter cylinders. The last letter means the type of working gas: “P” - propane.
The room used to place the equipment must comply with:
- fire safety standards categories B1-B4, and in the presence of gas under pressure - B
- electrical safety standards not lower than class two.
Safety for mobile and wearable devices is ensured taking into account the conditions of the work site.
Kinds
The basic classification divides all welding points into two main types:
- Stationary.
- Mobile.
Let's consider options for their organization.
Stationary
The largest of this type occupy separate premises, even workshops . Equipment for this type is usually bulky, and the processed products, on the contrary, are relatively small in size. Typically, serial workpieces are processed here.
Such points are used to accommodate such welding technologies as diffusion, laser, submerged arc welding, friction, pressing, and forging. In addition to welding, they carry out cutting using gas, laser or plasma cutting, and other similar work.
To ensure ventilation in a welding and metal cutting workshop, a system of supply and exhaust ducts, as well as powerful filters, is required.
Cabin
Small welding points serving repair shops of enterprises are placed in separate cabins. The purpose of these premises:
- provide protection to others from the bright light of the welding arc;
- ensure localization of the welding zone;
- make the work of an electric or gas welder organized and, if possible, comfortable.
The walls of such cabins are made of sheet metal, OSB sheets or plywood treated with fire-resistant impregnation . Alternatively, work areas are simply enclosed with tarpaulin screens or curtains.
Desktop
A kind of transition from stationary to mobile types . Equipped with clamps for precise positioning of welded parts, fasteners, drawers, cabinets for consumables and equipment. If necessary, use local exhaust hood.
It is made from sheet metal. At the same time, special grates are sometimes built into the countertops to extract combustion products directly from the welding zone.
The desktop is suitable for a small workshop, including a home one . It can be placed both indoors and under a canopy. If necessary, it is easy to move to another place.
Mobile
Can be installed in a car, trailer . Devices based on a semi-automatic apparatus are placed on a hand cart along with a carbon dioxide cylinder, replaceable holders, and a supply of welding wire and rods. A minimal set of tools is also placed here.
If you use a portable inverter, the post will fit in a suitcase with dimensions of 0.5x0.5 meters.
Equipment for different types of welding
The organization of work points is determined by the characteristics of the equipment used . First of all, these are the mass and connection requirements.
The welding station itself and the equipment of the welding station, the basis of which are heavy machines, are additionally provided with tools for their maintenance, adjustment, and, if necessary, repair. In addition, there must be a certain supply of consumables: powder flux, gas, various additives.
More precisely, the configuration parameters are dictated by technological maps, individual regulations, including a drawing with layout, functional and other diagrams.
Universal devices allow for greater freedom in the configuration of common devices. They are divided into two groups, based on:
- electric welding, arc;
- gas equipment.
Stationary posts of the first type are equipped with powerful DC or AC devices, often operating from a 380V network . These are AC transformers, with or without rectifiers, electrical machines (generators), arc stabilization devices.
If work is carried out using inert or active gas, cylinders with argon, hydrogen, helium, etc. will be required.
The gas welding package includes cylinders with working gas (acetylene or propane), as well as oxygen.
At the same time, unlike a mobile one, a stationary gas welding station has no weight restrictions , so gas is supplied here in cylinders with a capacity of tens of liters.
Tables and other equipment are also not limited in weight. An extended set may consist of more than just a vice and clamps. It includes clamps of various designs, pipe benders, devices for cold rolling, rolling, etc.
Mobile kits use small-sized equipment: inverters, semi-automatic welding machines, gas welding with small cylinders.
Ventilation arrangement
The quality and complexity of ventilation of equipment operating areas also depend on its parameters.
For mobile posts, it is not available as such, or the one that is available is used.
For stationary types, local ventilation is required . Especially when it comes to submerged arc welding and devices using active gases.
As a rule, cabinet-type sites are equipped with exhaust ventilation, which sucks in the resulting combustion products directly from the welding zone. Air enters the room through the gaps under the fences and on top of them.
At the same time, the quality of the inflow depends on the organization of ventilation of the entire room where the welding is located.
Security requirements
Welding has a number of factors that can cause harm to human health:
- The high temperature that accompanies the process.
- High power electric current.
- Strong radiation in both the visible spectrum, infrared and ultraviolet.
- Products of combustion of substances, including pollution.
Explosive pressure containers. In order to prevent injury and harmful effects on human health, the arrangement is carried out in accordance with the requirements of GOST 12.3.003-86 “Electric welding work. Safety requirements” , as well as other regulations.
For example, the free space of the welding cabin must be at least 3 m2. Passages between electrical connection buses. current, as well as mechanisms with moving parts, be at least 1.5 meters.
The fencing of the welding work area is made solid to protect others from the glare of the arc. At the same time, a gap is left between the floor and the bottom of the wall for air flow.
The passage to the welding site is arranged in such a way that entry and exit are free, even in cases of heavy smoke or darkness.
A mandatory requirement is that posts be equipped with protective equipment, both special and general purpose.
The former include welding shields, helmets and masks, split-leaf fire-resistant gloves, and overalls. The second includes safety glasses and shields, work shoes, and hats.
In addition, in cases provided for by fire safety rules, posts are equipped with fire extinguishing means: fire extinguishers, sand.
Conclusion
The arrangement of welding places in the form of welding stations makes it possible not only to improve productivity due to better organization of space. At the same time, the quality of work improves and the risk of injury decreases

Equipment for welding stations: features of a mobile and stationary workplace - Machine
Self-taught welders in most cases carry out welding work at home in places that are more or less suitable for such work.
Professional craftsmen know how important it is to provide the most comfortable and safe working conditions, so they organize special welding stations. After all, the characteristics of the workplace largely determine how safe it will be for a craftsman to use welding equipment in practice.
What is a welding post and what are its types?
A welding station is a kind of welder’s office with the entire complex of equipment, tools and consumables necessary for his work to ensure uninterrupted performance of welding work. That is, this is a welder’s workspace in which it is as comfortable and safe to work as possible.
If all work on arranging welding stations is carried out taking into account labor safety requirements, this will provide the foreman with the maximum level of safety when welding. At the same time, the level of fire resistance of the space will be maximum. But to achieve this, it is important to understand the specifics of different types of welding posts.
Stationary welding station.
Based on the type of equipment used in the work, welding stations are:
- Gas welding.
The workroom for gas welding work is equipped taking into account the fact that the melting of metal in the process of organizing the joining of product edges in this case is based on the use of thermal energy from gas combustion in the burner. Therefore, the space must be equipped with the highest quality ventilation system, and surface finishing must be done with non-combustible materials. - Electric welding.
The workspace of an electric welder when working with electric welding is no less dangerous, but in this case it is important to pay more attention to ensuring a high level of human protection from electric shock.
Stationary post for manual welding.
Based on the capabilities, welding stations are:
- Stationary.
They look like an open-top cabin, which is raised above the level of the floor covering, are located indoors and can be equipped with a moving tabletop. - Mobile.
They are mobile structures that can be moved to another place for work without much difficulty. Mobile stations for welders are relevant for welding large-sized structures in spacious workshops or directly in the open air on a construction site.
In a stationary welding station, it is convenient to weld small and medium-sized parts, but it is not suitable for large components and metal structures. The cabin is made of rolled metal with a zinc-containing coating, resistant to high temperatures and infrared radiation.
A special feature of a mobile workplace is that there is no need to carry out special events or create special working conditions. The mobile welding station is protected from precipitation by means of a canopy, and from wind by means of screens.
Tools relevant for welding work are placed in special cabinets, and lighting of the space is provided by local light sources.
Making a welding station with your own hands
The welder’s workspace with a set of necessary equipment, tools, consumables and the welding machine itself is called a welding station. You can organize it yourself if you carefully study the standards and safety requirements for such offices.
When organizing a mobile welding station, additional devices will be required, since the entire complex of items, equipment and tools present in it must be movable.
The stationary type of welder’s workplace does not need to be moved, so when organizing it there is no need for supports on wheels, etc.
Regardless of the type of welding station, the work will require non-flammable materials to eliminate the risk of fire: for both permanent and temporary use of welding, it is important to provide the craftsman with safe working conditions.
Current tools and materials
When setting up a workplace for welding work, it is important to select a full range of tools and equipment that are relevant for the job.
Welding booth layout.
The list may change at the discretion of the welder, but there are positions that are extremely difficult to do without:
- welding machine;
- a device for storing filler materials and other types of auxiliary devices;
- constant power supply of electric current;
- comfortable landing place;
- switch for turning the voltage supply on and off;
- high-quality ventilation system, exhaust chamber;
- storage systems for small equipment: portable baskets, drawers, shelves, etc.;
- electric holder
The above elements, with rational planning of the workplace space, will take up relatively little space.
Equipping a welding station yourself must be carried out taking into account all safety requirements. The optimal length of the working space is 2 m, width – 2.5 m, height – 2 m. In no case should you create a closed upper part of the welding station.
To organize the walls, it is worth using thin steel or plywood impregnated with a fire-resistant solution.
To perform assembly and welding operations of metal parts inside the master’s office, it is important to install a comfortable table. The optimal parameters of the welding table are as follows: the height is 50-60 cm when working while sitting and about 90 cm when working while standing, and the area is about 100 cm2.
Steel bolts should be welded to the table, onto which the current-carrying wire from the welding current source, as well as the grounding wire of the work table, are attached.
On the side there are nests adapted for storing electrodes and filler materials. Drawers can be used to store small hand tools or technological documentation.
The main type of equipment in welders' offices is considered to be single- or multi-station arc power sources.
Often, in the workspace, welders use single-station power sources, since in the case of power from multi-station sources, the welding current must be distributed throughout the cabins through the use of current-carrying wires or buses. Also, a switch must be installed in the cabin to turn the welding current on and off.
Step-by-step arrangement of a welding station
General view of a typical welding station.
Welding stations can be organized in a spacious garage, service station, construction site, etc.
In any case, all operations for their arrangement can be divided into the following stages:
- choosing a place to organize the master’s workspace, clearing it of foreign objects, cleaning;
- arrangement of the walls of the working area using steel or plywood impregnated with a fire-resistant composition;
- arrangement of a table with a table top and storage systems made of non-flammable material;
- providing access to a source of electricity for the operation of electrical equipment;
- organization of a reliable ventilation system;
- visual inspection of the work result before welding.
Basic requirements for arranging welding stations
Portable welding station.
Regardless of the type of equipment used, the basic fire safety requirements for organizing a welder’s workplace are almost always the same and have a single goal - to provide the worker with comfortable and safe conditions for welding operations:
- protect the welder’s workplace with screens made of fireproof materials, but do not equip it with a closed top;
- welding with a device in a shielding gas environment should only be carried out if the cabin casing does not reach the floor by 30 cm, and the height of the light shield exceeds 2 m;
- make the casing of the cabin and the light protection screen from fireproof materials;
- the cabin area should not be less than 4.5 m, otherwise there will not be enough space to accommodate welded equipment, assembly units, fixtures and parts storage systems;
- surround the plasma cutting machine with a continuous fence made of fireproof materials with a height of at least 2.2 m;
- There is no point in placing 2 or more welding tables in one cabin, but if necessary, they must be separated by a light-protective screen to avoid fire.
Separately, we note the special role of the ventilation system in arranging a welder’s workplace. This point must be strictly controlled by the foreman, as it directly affects the level of safety of the welding station.
Experts advise the following:
- It is worth organizing local and general exhaust ventilation.
Local suction is provided for each unit and workspace if vapors of harmful substances are released into the air. - Hoods are equipped with filters that clean the air from welding aerosols and release it into the workshop or atmosphere.
- The supply of supply air is carried out dispersed when welding in shielding gas or concentrated in the upper zone when welding by other methods.
- It is preferable to choose a matte finish for the walls so that their surfaces do not reflect welding glare during the operation of the welding unit.
For the same purpose, the floors should be made of concrete.
- If these requirements for the parameters of welding stations and the ventilation system of the master’s workspace are met, the welder can begin work.
- Of course, different situations can happen in life, but the described precautions when assembling metal structures using welding machines significantly reduce the risk of injury to the craftsman and a fire from a welding spark.
Welding station of stationary and mobile type, its dimensions and safety requirements
Basic equipment
The organization of a stationary post requires the presence of the following electrical equipment and auxiliary equipment:
- source of supply current for arc formation (welding transformer or electronic inverter);
- a complete set of supply wires and cables with all additional accessories;
- electrode holders or special gas burners;
- welding tools and other devices;
- operator protection equipment during operation (special heat-resistant clothing, protective mask and thick canvas gloves or mittens).
A mobile welding station, unlike a permanent location, does not have clearly defined boundaries. This is explained by the fact that such a place is organized during welding work carried out on large and extended structures (within a site, workshop or construction site).
Let us note that this classification concerns only the method of organizing the relevant procedures, but does not take into account the nature of the operations performed.
Stationary type
The base has a minimum area of 2x3 meters. This area is fenced off with special protective screens and screens so that it turns out to be a cabin without a roof. The height of this structure must be at least two meters.
The cabin walls must be made of safe, non-flammable and non-fusible materials. The frame of the box is created from high-melting metals, the walls are made from safe polymer compounds.
Additionally, the inside of the cabin is coated with fire-resistant substances.
Desktops
Since small-sized workpieces are processed at stationary stations, special welding tables (workbenches) are provided for their placement, ensuring the convenience of special operations. They must be designed to work both standing and sitting, that is, have a height of 50 to 90 centimeters.
The lid of such a table is made of 2-centimeter steel or cast iron of approximately the same thickness; Moreover, its total area must be at least one square meter.
At the electric welding station, the tabletop is simultaneously used to securely fix the supply cable from the welding machine.
The welding station must have special pockets or metal boxes in which auxiliary tools, documentation or electrodes are supposed to be stored.
In addition, safety requirements require that all equipment in the post premises be reliably grounded, and its floor covered with a non-conductive rubber mat.
And finally, for the convenience of carrying out welding operations in the “sitting” position, a metal chair with a seat made of dielectric material (or its substitute) is installed at the post.

Welding station: how to organize, types, rules for assembly and startup, features
Welding training includes learning what a welding station is. This term is not clearly defined. Essentially, this is the basis of the welding workflow.
This is the place where the welding work will take place. However, a welding station is not just a point in space where a welder welds metal.
Essentially, this term is used to define a small work area equipped with the necessary equipment for welding metals. This includes welding equipment and other elements necessary for safe operation.
Most often, a welding station includes a welding apparatus, its accessories (electrodes, cables, torches, gas cylinders if necessary), as well as other tools that may be useful during work.
Sometimes it is even equipped with spare protective personal items, such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
But all this is superficial data. This article will provide more detailed information about what a welding station is, what they are, and what they include.
Mobile type
The second type of welding stations is characterized by mobility and slightly different installation requirements. Organizing a mobile version of a welding workstation is somewhat easier than a stationary one.
Since it is often located in an open space, it does not require forced ventilation or compliance with a minimum working area.
However, working with a mobile post has its own nuances.
First of all, the place where welding will be carried out must be equipped with a canopy. This is necessary to protect the welder from the influence of precipitation or sunlight.
The post itself, be it a frame or a trolley, must have working, reliable wheels. This will allow you to move equipment with a lot of weight.
Its design should be equipped with niches and compartments in which additional elements and necessary documentation will be stored. Models for gas processing of metals must be equipped with compartments for cylinders.
Assembly and operation rules
When working with any model of welding station there are certain rules, which are divided into general and individual.
Are common
The requirements for welding stations are based on safety regulations and the personal convenience of the worker.
First of all, any type must have grounding. To comply with this rule, they are placed on a base made of concrete or brick. The floor must be equipped with a rubber mat.
Stationary options must be equipped with reliable ventilation. Table components must be steel or cast iron and no thinner than 2 cm.
If work will be carried out in a sitting position, a special chair must be provided. It must have an ergonomic shape and protection from the effects of electricity.
Also, the workplace must be properly lit. If there is no natural light or it is insufficient, lamps are located above the cabin. Their light should not be too bright.
Each post is equipped with an electrical switch.
Individual
Individual rules for organizing posts depend on the type of welding used: RDS or semi-automatic.
Welding metals using alternating current requires an oscillator. Metal cutting jobs require space to locate the necessary tools.
When working with three-phase voltage, a contactor must be used. Processing parts using gases requires space for gas cylinders.
Requirements for organizing a welding station
The welding station is a specific “office” of the welder, equipped with all the necessary equipment, accessories and devices necessary for the uninterrupted performance of welding work.
The organization of the welding station and all work associated with its arrangement must be carried out in accordance with labor protection and life safety requirements. When planning such areas that carry out technological processes, one should be guided by GOST 12.3.
003-86 (pdf), which establishes requirements for production premises and placement of equipment, transportation of materials, as well as requirements for personnel and the use of PPE.
In this case, we will talk about arranging a workplace for performing electric arc welding operations (manual, argon arc, semi-automatic).
Mobile post
Mobile work, as a rule, involves outdoor welding of large structures. Therefore, special events and the creation of special conditions necessary for the functioning of such a post are not required. Protection from precipitation is provided by canopies, and the work area is protected from the wind by screens. Tools and equipment are moved to a special facility. cabinets. Local light sources are used for lighting. All equipment must be grounded.

Welding station for manual arc welding
What is an electric or gas welding station? Simply put, this is a welder’s workplace, which is fully equipped with the necessary equipment, apparatus, tools and consumables. There should also be an exhaust hood to remove all kinds of gases that accompany the welding process; these are safety requirements. A workbench, chair and other workshop attributes are required.
Types of welding stations
The classification of welding stations includes two types: stationary and mobile (portable). The latter can be transported to different sites. A special feature of the activity at a stationary post is that the workpiece is brought to the welder. In the mobile version, the welder comes to the workpiece.
Stationary welding station
The dimensions of the welding station are determined by the volume of work performed by the welder. But the height of the cabin is usually at least 2 m. The floor, ceiling and walls are made of non-combustible materials. These are safety requirements.
Workplace lighting should not be less than 80 Lux. Ideally, there will be a combination of artificial lighting and daylight. Connecting all types of electrical equipment to the grounding system of the workshop building is mandatory. A stationary manual arc welding station must be equipped with good ventilation. The main requirement for it is an air exchange in the post space of 40 m³/h.
The surface of the workbench is a cast iron plate 20-25 mm thick. In this case, its surface should be at a height of 50-70 cm above the floor level. A switch and a magnetic starter must be installed inside each working cabin to ensure that the welding transformer is turned on and off.
Attention! Welding equipment can be installed both indoors and outdoors. In this case, the maximum distance from it to the welding machine should not exceed 15 m.
Mobile welding station
Essentially, this is an outdoor workplace for an electric or gas welder. Therefore, there are not such stringent security requirements for this place. There is no ventilation system, the only surfaces are the ceiling, which is the roof of a canopy that protects the space from natural precipitation.
Mostly daylight is used, but each workbench is equipped with a local lighting system that operates independently of other objects. But, like at a stationary post, a grounding system is also organized at a portable one. Some portable welding booths have protective panels on all sides. But there is one requirement for its arrangement - there must always be a gap of 50 cm between the panels. This will be a kind of ventilation system for the welding station.
As for the equipment of a welding station for manual arc welding or gas welding (meaning mobile type), in addition to the workbench and chair, cabinets are installed in which tools and consumables for carrying out the work are stored.
There are mobile welding stations that are mounted on automobile chassis. This is a truly mobile object. Up to three welded units are usually placed in its design. Such a machine is driven to the site, and three welders work on it at once.
A large machine structure is sheathed with thin sheet iron, thereby complying with safety requirements. One long workbench is installed inside, there are also cabinets, a furnace for calcining electrodes, and boxes for storing cables and hoses. In general, this is a mobile unit with which you can perform a large amount of work.
Such welding stations for gas welding or electric welding can be located not on automobile chassis, but on skids. In the upper part of its frame, lugs are made in the corners, by which the entire structure is lifted using a crane and transferred to the required area. Or they load it onto a car and transport it to other sites.
Since there are several types of welding, the workplace will have to be equipped differently. The only things that remain unchanged are grounding, safety requirements for the welding station, lighting and auxiliary devices for the convenience of the welder.
- Welding with non-consumable electrodes in shielding gases requires organizing a place for gas cylinders or a compressor.
- Mechanized welding or cutting of metals is an additional unit for supplying consumables or cutting tools.
- Using three-phase voltage means installing a contactor of the required size.
- The workplace of an electric welder operating on alternating current is additionally equipped with an oscillator. Its purpose is to stabilize the electric arc.
Equipping a place where a gas or electric welder works is a serious and responsible matter. The basic and important rule here is to ensure maximum safety during welding work. Therefore, systems such as ventilation, grounding and lighting receive increased attention.
Proper provision of a welding station for manual welding is not only reducing the risk of employee illness, but also preserving his health, which is very important. This is an increase in the quality of work, plus a reduction in order completion times.

Mobile welding station: equipment and fire safety requirements
Self-taught welders in most cases carry out welding work at home in places that are more or less suitable for such work.
Professional craftsmen know how important it is to provide the most comfortable and safe working conditions, so they organize special welding stations. After all, the characteristics of the workplace largely determine how safe it will be for a craftsman to use welding equipment in practice.
We study the requirements for the welding station
Welding station is a welder’s work area, equipped with all the necessary equipment and additional tools. The main components of the welding station are: electric power source, work cables, acetylene torch. Auxiliary tools for working with metal structures and personal protective equipment should also be on hand.
Welder workplace equipment options
Welding stations are divided into two types:
- stationary – designed mainly for working with small metal workpieces;
- mobile - most often installed at large manufacturing enterprises, used when laying pipelines and prefabricated construction structures.
General requirements for the welder's workplace
- The area must be sufficiently illuminated (minimum 80 Lux). It is recommended to simultaneously use natural light and electric lighting devices for welding stations.
- All types of electrical equipment must be grounded.
- The flooring on the site should be made of brickwork or concrete.
- Specialized pockets for storing documentation and consumables.
- A mandatory requirement is the organization of high-quality ventilation of welding stations to remove harmful gases.
- Working surface made of cast iron, steel with power cable.
- The welder must have a rubber mat under his feet.
- To perform seated work, there must be a special metal chair with a dielectric seat.
When arranging a site on the street, a canopy must be made that will protect from precipitation. To protect from direct sunlight, special folding shields are equipped.
Mobile welding station
A professional mobile welding station is organized for high-quality welding work and the production of large-sized metal structures. Such a workplace is most often organized in an open area, so a canopy must be made for it, which will protect it from solar radiation and precipitation. The main material used in the manufacture of mobile post canopies is warehouse panels.
For the convenience of storing electrodes, auxiliary tools, special equipment, and other available tools, the gas welding station is equipped with special cabinets. In this case, a ventilation system is not provided, since the work is carried out in the open air, and the harmful gases released during the work quickly dissipate on their own.
Basic requirements for organizing a mobile post
- Lighting should minimize the load on the worker’s visual organs resulting from the light flux.
- Lighting fixtures are most often placed above the desktop tabletop, next to it.
- The gas welding station must have a grounding device.
- For high-quality exhaust ventilation in a natural way, gaps of about half a meter are left between the floor base and the walls.
Equipment
Due to the fact that there are different types of welding, workplaces are somewhat different in arrangement. General requirements for workplaces are the presence of a grounding device, compliance with safety requirements, lighting, and additional working tools.
Separate requirements for different workplaces
- In the case of using alternating current welding, the welding site is additionally organized with an oscillator, which is necessary to stabilize the welding arc.
- When using mechanized welding or cutting metal products, it is necessary to have a cutting tool feeder (consumables).
- If three-phase voltage is used, then a contactor of a certain size will be needed.
- When performing welding work in a protective gas environment using non-consumable electrodes, the oxygen-propane welding station must be equipped with space for placing a compressor (gas cylinders).
A professional welder’s table is the place where joining work is performed. Therefore, the lid for the welding table is made of steel and has a thickness of about 2.5 centimeters. For any post, a magnetic starter and a switch for turning on/off the operating current are provided.
Important!
The arrangement of a welder’s place of work must be approached with great responsibility. Here you need to be based on the main requirement - the safety of welding work. Therefore, for a welding station of any type using any welding equipment, mandatory attention is paid to lighting, ventilation, and grounding.
