The process of rust appearing on a car body can be divided into three stages:

  1. The first stage of corrosion, which appears at the joints of parts and can be quite easily removed with sandpaper or other available means;
  2. The second stage of corrosion, which is also called subfilm. It is marked by swelling of the car’s paintwork and the appearance of a “hot spot.”
  3. The third stage of corrosion is critical. This is the last stage of the action of rust on metal, as a result of which holes are formed on the body of the car.

To avoid destruction of the car body as a result of the active action of rust, it is recommended to inspect the sills, fenders, bottom and other elements of the car in detail every week for signs of the first stage of corrosion.

How to remove rust from a car yourself

If, during an inspection of the car, corrosion damage to the body was discovered, it is necessary to correct the problem as soon as possible. To remove rust from a car, you will need to stock up on the following tools:

  • A sandblaster or sanding machine (if there is no financial opportunity to purchase such tools, you can limit yourself to sandpaper);
  • Paper;
  • Masking tape;
  • Rags;
  • Rust converter, which can be purchased at any automotive store;
  • Primer and fiberglass putty (if there are through holes on the body);
  • Latex gloves
  • Paint and varnish.

Depending on the stage of corrosion, the set of necessary tools will vary.

When the necessary set of tools is prepared, you can move on to removing rust on the car body. This procedure is performed as follows:

  1. The car must be washed well so that dirt does not interfere with the fight against corrosion.
  2. Next, you will need to clean the damaged areas of the body using a sandblaster, sanding machine or sandpaper. It is important to cover undamaged areas of the body with paper and masking tape before starting cleaning. At the same time, the “healthy” parts of the body should not be closed adjacent to the damaged ones, otherwise the corrosion elements along the edges will not be removed. It is better to clean more of the rusted area than less. It is necessary to clean body fragments so that they are smooth and even when finished.
  3. After this, you need to put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from the effects of acid, and apply a rust converter, having previously degreased the surface.
  4. Next, a primer is applied to the cleaned area and leveled. When repairing stage three rust, that is, holes in the body of the car, they must be repaired using fiberglass putty. After applying the primer, the car must be left for 12 hours.
  5. The last stage is the selection and application of paint. First, find paint identical to the color of your body in a car store. Next, it should be applied to the car body in 2-3 layers, and when it is completely dry, varnished. After applying paint and varnish, the car should be left for 2-3 days, after which the repaired area will need to be polished.
