This happens because silver is a capricious metal and in order to maintain its shine and cleanliness, you need to remember the basic nuances of proper care, cleaning and storage. It is not necessary to buy special products for the cleaning procedure.

Surely, in every home there are ingredients that can be used to return silverware to its former attractive appearance and extend the service life of the products.

Why does silver turn black?

Typically, silver can turn black for a variety of reasons:

• improper storage;
• high humidity;
• interaction with substances containing sulfur;
• use of unsuitable cleaning products.

Thus, silver reacts with the environment and a certain film is formed on it, which is very difficult to clean. To prevent such a situation from arising, it is very important not only to properly store and care for cutlery, but also to use it wisely. How to store silver cutlery:

• separately from other dishes (it is advisable to have a separate drawer);
• It’s even better if each device is wrapped in a separate cotton bag or at least in foil;
• in a dry, cool place and, of course, away from direct sunlight;

How to clean silverware at home

You can clean silverware yourself with several available tools that can be found in almost every home. In order to clean the devices, you need to follow certain general rules:

• You need to rub the devices carefully, without much zeal;
• do not use several products at the same time;
• Use rubber gloves to protect the skin of your hands.

Soda

Using baking soda, you can clean all blackened appliances at once:

• add 60 grams of soda per 1 liter of water;
• bring to a boil and try to dissolve the powder as much as possible;
• Place a large piece of foil in the bottom of the pan;
• dip the silverware in water and leave for 25-30 minutes;
• remove, cool and wipe dry with paper napkins.

Some owners of silverware often clean their cutlery directly with baking soda, applying it to a sponge or piece of soft cloth. This is highly discouraged, since soda is essentially an abrasive substance consisting of solid microparticles. With this method of cleaning, you risk getting scratches on the silver, which will subsequently lead to re-blackening and damage to the items.

Toothpaste or tooth powder

Apply a small amount of your chosen product (either paste or powder) to a soft-bristled brush. Gently but thoroughly clean the silver, then rinse it with clean water. You will immediately notice how the devices will shine, and there will be no trace of stains left.

Vinegar

As you know, vinegar is an acid. Although it cleans silver very well, you need to act very carefully:

• heat the required amount of vinegar 9% (enough so that the product is slightly warm);
• immerse silver cutlery in the container for no more than 10 minutes;
• rinse under running water and blot with paper napkins.

If the method does not help the first time, the procedure can be repeated.

Lemon juice or citric acid

Silver will become shiny again if you soak it for 12 hours in a solution of 15 ml of lemon juice, 200 grams of milk powder and 300 ml of clean water. Then the silver should be washed in warm water and wiped dry.

If there is no citrus in the house, then you can try citric acid. To do this, dissolve 100 grams of powder in 500 ml of water. Be sure to put a small piece of copper wire into the container, and only then lower the silver into it. Boil in a water bath for up to 25 minutes, rinse and dry.

Eggshell

A rather strange method, but, nevertheless, it is very effective when it comes to cleaning silver items:

• take an aluminum container and pour 1 liter of water into it;
• add 15 grams of salt and crushed shells from two eggs;
• bring to a boil;
• heat silver cutlery under hot water and place in boiling water for 25-30 seconds;
• rinse and rub with paper towels.

Potato

In this case, the substance that will help get rid of black spots on silver is potato starch:

• Boil the potatoes until tender;
• drain the water into a separate bowl and cool it to 22-24°C;
• add a small piece of foil to the water;
• lower the silver and leave for no more than 7 minutes;
• rinse and dry well.

If none of the methods help, you can use household cleaning products. But, as a rule, their effectiveness is no better than traditional methods and they act essentially the same way.
